Les relations diplomatiques entre le Ghana et la Chine datent du jour même où le premier a obtenu son indépendance de la Grande-Bretagne. A cette occasion, le vice-premier ministre chinois Nieh Jungchen, représenta son pays lors de la célébration de l'indépendance du Ghana le 6 mars 1957. Récemment, la question de l'exploitation des ressources naturelles, et du ‘bois de rose' a été l'un des principaux leviers des relations commerciales entre la Chine et le Ghana. Le bois de rose, également connu sous le nom de hong mu en mandarin, désigne un groupe de trente-trois espèces de bois durs tropicaux, dont beaucoup sont également des espèces en voie de disparition. La demande excessive de bois de rose en Chine a conduit à une exploitation accrue et souvent illégale dans de nombreux pays producteurs d'Asie et plus récemment en Afrique.Sur le plan théorique et conceptuel, cette thèse s'inspire de la théorie de l'accès, de la théorie des biens communs, de la théorie des incitations et de l'approche analytique des relations de de pouvoir centré sur les stratégies d'acteurs. Elle est basée sur une recherche empirique originale menée principalement au Ghana, où la première série de collecte de données s'est déroulée d'avril à août 2022, puis une seconde fut conduite d'avril à juillet 2023. La thèse analyse comment une pluralité d'acteurs de la chaîne commerciale du bois de rose procède pour avoir accès à cette ressource naturelle. Elle évalue l'impact de la présence croissante des acteurs chinois sur la gouvernance du bois de rose et les conséquences induites par cette présence sur les "biens communs" en zone rurale au Ghana. Elle évalue également les effets relatifs structures de gouvernance et les dynamiques de pouvoir observées entre les principaux acteurs du commerce du bois de rose entre la Chine et le Ghana pour une période de deux décennies (2000 - 2023).L'une des principales conclusions de la thèse est qu'il existe une importante asymétrie de pouvoir et de capacité de négociation entre les acteurs ghanéens et les acteurs chinois de la filière bois de rose. Dans la majorité des cas, les seconds tirent régulièrement profit du désordre et des faiblesses institutionnelles des premiers. La thèse met spécifiquement en évidence certains facteurs qui affectent les processus d'accès au bois de rose au Ghana : les modes d'appropriation foncière, les croyances culturelles, les capacités financières des acteurs, La qualité des réglementations gouvernementales et le degré de leur mise en œuvre. Cette recherche apporte une contribution originale sur les déterminants et conditions d'accès, par les acteurs chinois, aux ressources naturelles dans des contextes africains caractérisés par la persistance d'un "désordre politique". Elle dévoile plus précisément les réalités de l'architecture institutionnelle ghanéenne autour de l'exploitation des ressources naturelles et de la gouvernance forestière au Ghana. Enfin, ce travail pose les bases d'un questionnement fondamental sur l'avenir des politiques de gestion durable des forêts ghanéennes au regard de l'influence croissante de la Chine en Afrique
Diplomatic relations between Ghana and China date back to the very day the former gained independence from Great Britain. On that occasion, Chinese vice-premier Nieh Jungchen represented his country at Ghana's independence celebrations on 6 March 1957. Recently, the exploitation of natural resources and 'rosewood' in particular, has been one of the main drivers of trade relations between China and Ghana. Rosewood, also known as hong mu in Mandarin, refers to a group of thirty-three species of tropical hardwood, many of which are also endangered species. Excessive demand for rosewood in China has led to increased and often illegal logging in many Asian producer countries and more recently in Africa.Theoretically and conceptually, this thesis draws on access theory, commons theory, incentive theory and the analytical approach to power relations centered on actor strategies. It is based on original empirical research carried out mainly in Ghana, where the first series of data collection took place from April to August 2022, followed by a second series from April to July 2023. The thesis analyses how several players in the rosewood trade chain gain access to this natural resource. It assesses the impact of the growing presence of Chinese actors on the governance of rosewood and the consequences of this presence on the 'commons' in rural Ghana. It also assesses the relative effects of governance structures and power dynamics observed between the main players in the rosewood trade between China and Ghana over a two-decade period (2000-2023).One of the main conclusions of the thesis is that there is a significant asymmetry of power and negotiating capacity between Ghanaian and Chinese players in the rosewood industry. In most cases, the latter regularly take advantage of the disorder and institutional weaknesses of the former. The thesis specifically highlights certain factors that affect the processes of access to rosewood in Ghana: modes of land appropriation, cultural beliefs, the financial capacities of stakeholders, the quality of government regulations and the degree to which they are implemented. This research makes an original contribution to the determinants and conditions of access by Chinese actors to natural resources in African contexts characterized by the persistence of 'political disorder'. More specifically, it reveals the realities of Ghana's institutional architecture around the exploitation of natural resources and forest governance in Ghana. Finally, this work lays the foundations for fundamental questions about the future of Ghana's sustainable forest management policies in light of China's growing influence in Africa

Problemes en la replicació de l’ADN, condensació o de-catenació generen ponts anafàsics al punt de divisió, que en molts casos provoquen inestabilitat genòmica. La cèl·lula respon a aquest problema activant la via del NoCut, que retarda l’abscisió en cèl·lules de llevat i humanes. El retràs de l’abscisió requereix el complex APCcdh1, el qual estabilitza el fus anafàsic i permet que Aurora B quinasa detecti l’ADN extraviat al centre del fus. La meva tesis mostra que la proteïna de membrana Boi2 es essencial en aquest procés. Als estadis inicials del cicle cel·lular, Boi2 i el seu paràlog Boi1 són essencials pel creixement de la superfície de la cèl·lula idurant aquests processos regulen la exocitosis. Boi1 i Boi2 no són essencials per citocinesis, però en presència de defectes de segregació cromosòmica, Boi2 actua com a inhibidor de la resolució de la membrana plasmàtica. He demostrat que el domini SH3 de Boi2, necessari pel reclutament de Boi2 al punt de gemmació, és necessari i suficient pel NoCut per retardar l’abscisió. En conjunt, els nostres resultats suggereixen que l’existència d’una regulació precisa del tràfic de membranes és essencial per el retard de l’abscisió per part del NoCut.
The NoCut pathway delays abscission in presence of chromosome segregation defects, both in yeast and human cells. NoCut requires the APCCdh1 complex that stabilizes the anaphase spindle and allows Aurora B kinase to sense the lagging DNA in the midzone. Little is known, however, about the mechanisms behind abscission delay in NoCut. My thesis shows that Boi2 is essential in this process. At early stages of the cell cycle, Boi2 and its paralog Boi1 are essential for cell growth, acting in the control of exocytosis. Boi1 and Boi2 are not essential for cytokinesis but in presence of chromosome segregation defects, Boi2 acts as inhibitor of plasma membrane resolution. The SH3 domain of Boi2 is required for the protein localization at the budneck, and is required and sufficient in NoCut. Together this data suggests that a mechanism involving the careful regulation of membrane trafficking is essential for implementation of the NoCut abscission delay.

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a arquitetura de “Conversa de Bois”, oitava narrativa do livro Sagarana (1946), de João Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967). Essa narrativa apresenta-se como resultante de um conjunto de atuantes que propiciam ao narrador-erudito material para a feitura do conto. Há, pois, nesta diferentes níveis. O primeiro deles, nível extradiegético, diz respeito à feitura da narrativa. Aí se situam os narradores-autores (fictícios): o narrador erudito não-nomeado, que estrutura o conto; Manuel Timborna, narrador-oral ou rapsodo, que contou a estória ao narrador-erudito; a irara, testemunha ocular e auditiva da viagem de Agenor Soronho e Tiãozinho, que, tendo caído prisioneira de Manuel Timborna, só foi libertada mediante o relato minucioso da viagem a seu capturador. No segundo, nível diegético, ou seja, o da estória em si, estão Tiãozinho e Agenor Soronho, os oito bois do carro, a irara, João Bala e os cavaleiros. Por fim, no terceiro nível, hipodiegético, aquele no qual um personagem da diegese assume a narração de outra estória, encontram-se as outras estórias presentes em “Conversa de bois”, entre elas, a do boi Rodapião e a do boi Carinhoso. Tendo em vista a presença de tais níveis, buscamos, nesta dissertação, (1) descrever cada um deles, (2) oferecer a sua funcionalidade e (3) destacar algumas possíveis conexões entre um nível e outro. Para isso, a obra Discurso da narrativa, de Gérard Genette ofereceu-nos a teoria-base para a objetivada leitura do conto rosiano. Os resultados da pesquisa evidenciam que ao “desmontar” a narrativa em camadas nos aproximamos da compreensão do todo.
The architectural structure of ‘Conversa de Bois’, the eighth narrative of Sagarana (1946) by João Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967), is provided. The narrative is the result of a set of agents that furnish material to a sophisticated narrator for the construction of the short story in which several levels exist. The narrative structure lies at the extradiegetic level where the narrator-fictional authors are positioned, namely, the unnamed sophisticated narrator who structures the short story; Manuel Timborna, the oral narrator or rhapsody maker, who tells the story to the sophisticated narrator; the tayra, eye- and ear-witness of the trip endeavored by Agenor Soronho and Tiãozinho, who, as prisoner of Manuel Timborna, was freed through the detailed report to its capturer. Tiãozinho and Agenor Soronho, the eight ox-carts, the tayra, João Bala and the horsemen may be found at the diegetic level or the story. The other stories in ‘Conversa de bois’, namely the story by the oxen Rodapião and Carinhoso, may be found at the third or hypodiegetic level, where a character becomes the narrator of another story. In current dissertation featuring the presence of the above-mentioned levels, (1) each level will be described; (2) their functionality will be provided; (3) possible connections between one level and another will be highlighted. Gérard Genette’s Narrative Discourse will foreground the interpretation of Guimarães Rosa’s narrative. Results show that the dissection of the narrative in layers makes the reader and critic understand the whole.

O objetivo deste trabalho, num primeiro momento, foi extrair das 65 cartas que João Guimarães Rosa remeteu à sua tradutora para o inglês, Harriet de Onís, durante a tradução de Sagarana, as linhas gerais que configuram sua poética. Um breve panorama da gênese e da recepção deste livro, seguidos pelos comentários às mencionadas cartas, abriu nossa pesquisa. Depois disso realizamos uma análise do conto Conversa de bois, oitava narrativa de Sagarana, enriquecida pelas declarações do escritor na referida correspondência em torno do seu processo de criação. Para complementar a análise e esclarecer certas questões relativas à técnica compositiva do autor não tratadas especificamente em sua poética, recorremos a alguns conceitos-chave de pensadores de diferentes tradições que, embora desenvolvidos em épocas distintas, encontram seu lugar nesse estudo do universo heteróclito criado por JGR. Uma atenção especial foi dada ao Formalismo Russo (Roman Jakobson (1896-1982), Viktor Chklóvski (1896- 1984), Iuri Tyniánov (1894-1943) e Ossip Brik (1888-1945)) cujos preceitos muitos deles em consonância com a poética rosiana foram uma referência válida para a metodologia de nossa análise.
The first, aim of this work was to draw the general lines that establish João Guimarães Rosas poetics from the 65 letters the author sent to his translator Harriet de Onís, during her English translation of Sagarana whose brief genetic and receptive panorama, together with Rosas epistolary remarks, open our research. After that, we performed an analysis of the short story Conversa de bois, Sagaranas eighth narrative, taking into consideration the mentioned writers informations about his creative process. To enlighten the analysis and clarify certain questions related to the author´s compositional technique, we made use of some key-concepts of thinkers from different traditions, which, in spite of belonging to different periods, found their place in this work about the heteroclite universe created by JGR. A special attention was given to Russian Formalism (Roman Jakobson (1896-1982), Viktor Chklóvski (1896-1984), Iuri Tyniánov (1894-1943) e Ossip Brik (1888-1945)) whose precepts many of them in consonance with Rosas poetics were a valid reference for the methodology of our analysis.

Our experiment is aimed at understanding how employee reactions to negative feedback are received by the feedback provider and how employee gender may play a role in the process. We focus specifically on the act of crying and, based on role congruity theory, argue that a male employee crying in response to negative performance feedback will be seen as atypical behavior by the feedback provider, which will bias evaluations of the employee on a number of different outcome variables, including performance evaluations, assessments of leadership capability, and written recommendations. That is, we expect an interactive effect between gender and crying on our outcomes, an effect that will be mediated by perceived typicality. We find support for our moderated mediation model in a sample of 169 adults, indicating that men who cry in response to negative performance feedback will experience biased evaluations from the feedback provider. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The issue of masculinity is complex, and many theories on how gender is constructed exist. The central premise of this study is that gender construction is the result of dynamic social interaction and, as such, a post-structuralist paradigm is ascribed to. The concept of multiple masculinities exists to explain the influences different contexts have on how masculine ideas are constructed. This is not a passive process and individuals are considered active creators of their own identity. However, research demonstrates that not all masculinities are equal. Hegemonic masculinity maintains its leading dominant position status through using strategies of power and dominance to maintain the pinnacle position of status in the hierarchy of masculinities. The purpose of this study is to listen to the narratives of pre-adolescent boys about masculinity. Post-structuralist and social constructivist ideas that meaning is fluid and open to change, is influenced by culture and the individual meanings that people make. This understanding provides the theoretical framework for this qualitative study. Through a narrative-inquiry design, meaning was made of the individual experiences of six boys within the context of a single-sex preparatory school. The narratives of these participants, purposively selected, were obtained using the data-collecting methods of interviews, a focus group and the construction of a collage. The analysed data was presented both in the form of the narratives of the participants and through a thematic analysis. The findings indicate that within this private, single-sex preparatory school context, multiple constructions of masculinity are formed, and they all appear to be constructed in relation to hegemonic notions of masculinity. It was found that fathers play an important role in the way in which boys construct their masculine identity. However, their peers and the school context also play a significant role. Further, the findings revealed that although hegemonic notions of masculinity in this context had a powerful impact on these participants’ construction of masculinity, there are indications some are challenging overt expressions of hegemonic masculinity and, as such, hold more complex, transitional constructs of masculine identity.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die kwessie rondom manlikheid is kompleks en daar bestaan baie teorieë oor hoe geslag gebou word. Die sentrale uitgangspunt van hierdie studie is dat die konstruksie van geslag ‘n resultaat van dinamiese sosiale interaksie is en dus aan 'n post-strukturalistiese paradigma toegeskryf word. As sodanig bestaan die konsep van verskeie vorme van manlikheid om te verduidelik hoe verskillende kontekste manlike idees beïnvloed. Dit is nie 'n passiewe proses nie. Individue word as aktiewe skeppers van hulle eie identiteit beskou. Navorsing toon egter dat nie alle vorme van manlikheid gelyk is nie. Hegemoniese manlikheid hou 'n dominante posisie in stand deur die gebruik van strategieë van mag en oorheersing; die hoogsteposisie van status in die hiërargie van manlikheid word dus gestaaf. Die doel van hierdie studie is om na die narratiewe van pre-adolessente seuns oor manlikheid te luister. Post-strukturalistiese en sosiale konstruktivistiese idees wat aandui dat bedoelings vloeibaar en veranderbaar is, afhangende van kultuur en die betekenis wat deur 'n individu daaraan geheg word, voorsien dus 'n teoretiese raamwerk vir hierdie kwalitatiewe studie. Deur die gebruik van ‘n narratiewe ondersoek-ontwerp, is die betekenis van die individuele ervaringe van ses seuns in die konteks van 'n enkel-geslag voorbereidende skool geevalueer. Die verhale van hierdie deelnemers, wat doelgerig geselekteer is, is verkry deur gebruik te maak van onderhoude, 'n fokus groep en die konstruksie van 'n collage as data insamelingsmetodes. Die geanaliseerde data is beide in die vorm van verhale van die deelnemers sowel as 'n tematiese analise aangebied. Die bevindinge dui daarop dat binne hierdie private, enkel-geslag voorbereidende skoolkonteks, verskeie konstruksies van manlikheid gevorm word en het telkens beblyk in verhouding tot hegemoniese idees oor manlikheid gebou te word. Daar is bevind dat vaders 'n belangrike rol speel in die wyse waarop seuns hul manlike identiteit konstrueer. Eweknieë en die skoolkonteks speel egter ook 'n belangrike rol in die konstruksie van geslag. Die bevindinge het verder aan die lig gebring dat, alhoewel hegemoniese idees oor manlikheid in hierdie konteks 'n kragtige uitwerking op hierdie deelnemers se konstruksie van manlikheid het, daar aanduidings is dat sommige van die deelnemers openlike uitdrukkings van hegemoniese manlikheid uitdaag en sodoende meer komplekse oorgang-konstrukte van manlike identiteit het.

This study aims at analyzing peatlands, specifically alpine peat bogs, and how climate change can affect the development of these environments. Therefore, it has been used a computer model (DigiBog), created by Baird et al. (2012), thanks to which it is possible to study peatland development over time. Once understood the model and verified its functionalities, we applied it to the selected case study, which is an Alpine peatland located near Misurina lake (Italy). In order to do so, we collected field measurements to constrain the model for the actual geometry of the study site, as well as soil samples to obtain soil properties used as inputs in the model. Meteorological data were provided by ARPAV, thanks to the presence of a meteorological station near the Misurina lake. Finally, to understand how climate change may affect the development of this type of environments, we consider the forecasts of the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), with Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) of 8.5. This scenario, in fact, which is the worst-case scenario provided by the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change), appears to be the most realistic, because today other scenarios are outdated, given the current conditions of emissions and mitigation (Schwalm, 2020). In order to give a better context to the work done, a general description of the peat bogs and their importance from the climatic point of view was first introduced; then DigiBog, with which the maps were created, was described in detail. It is clear that the study of peatlands is fundamental, because it allows to understand how they can develop under specific conditions, and how they will adapt to future climate scenarios worldwide. From the outputs obtained through DigiBog it is possible to understand that the model is able to represent in a fairly true way the real growth of the peatland, therefore it can be considered a valid tool to obtain data on the development of peatlands.

The research reported in this thesis examines some aspects of upward influence behaviours at work, and in particular, the relationship between type of influence behaviours used and a number of potential correlates, including sex of agent, sex of target, sex-role identity, locus of control, job level, job type (secretarial worker or not) and educational level of agent. To examine these relationships. 64 male and 173 female white-collar workers (at AS01 to AS06 levels, or equivalent) in three large organisations in Canberra (A.C.T.) were surveyed, with a questionnaire containing measures of influence behaviours, attitudes to influencing upwards at work, a measure of sex-role identity, and a measure of locus of control beliefs, as well as demographic information. The data gathered from this survey was analysed using univariate, bivariate. and multivariate methods. Results showed limited support for stereotypical differences between males and females in influence behaviours used, and no support for hypotheses involving sex of target, sex-role identity, or secretarial workers. Influence behaviours previously identified as having positive outcomes for the agent were found in this study to be significantly associated with job level and educational level; influence behaviours previously identified as having negative outcomes for the agent were significantly associated with the tendency to explain outcomes in terms of control by powerful others, and with a sex-role identity characterised by negative masculinity traits. These findings suggest the importance of both structural and personal factors in choice of upward influence strategies at work. Suggestions for further research are provided.

Ce travail reconstitue les mécanismes humoristiques propres à la concurrence politique des époques tardo-républicaine et impériale, dans le but de montrer les adaptations du risum mouere aux changements politiques et sociaux intervenus durant cette période. Il s’agit de dépasser une lecture théorique centrée sur le rire de l’homo urbanus et du bon orateur proposée par Cicéron et Quintilien pour lui préférer une lecture historicisée et combinatoire, considérant les orateurs, les traits d’esprit, les auditoires et les causes politiques comme un tout à l’agencement variable de ce que les Modernes nomment l’« humour politique ». Scrutant les divers contextes politiques de cet humour (les procès, le Sénat, les contiones, le Forum, la campagne militaire ou encore la rue), la recherche souligne également le passage, selon des rythmes syncopés résultant d’un repli de la causticité aristocratique face à César mais qui perdure à l’époque triumvirale, d’un « faire rire » frontal articulé autour du succès oratoire vers un humour fondé sur l’anonymat des correspondances, des graffitis ou des chants du triomphe. This work explores the links between risum mouere and Roman political competition from the two last centuries of the Republic to the beginnings of the Principate. It is necessary to go beyond a critical discussion of the influential theories of the good orator and homo urbanus (mostly conceptualized by Cicero and Quintilian) and instead to adopt a historicizing and complex reading of the phenomenon, conceiving political humor as an ever-changing object shaped by orators, jokes, audiences, and political struggles. In order to understand its role in the roman city, political humor thus needs to be considered as a contextualized whole. The first part of the dissertation considers risum mouere in the context of trials, in the Senate, on the Forum, in the street or at war. Each of these case studies reveals a type of political humor that is freely and openly used in public life. The second part tries to determine what impact Caesar’s rise and the triumvirs had on political competition and, at the same time, on the possibilities of using political humor in the city. This section sheds light on the multiple ways in which the aristocrats and people of Rome continued to mock the powerful (Caesar, Antony and Octavian) by using more discreet channels (correspondence, graffiti, triumphal songs), and how these enabled them to keep expressing strong political opposition, which was otherwise dangerous to address in broad daylight. The third and last part focuses on the first century A.D. and discusses the opposition elaborated by ancient authors between the “good prince”, who was naturally comfortable with political humor, and the repressive “tyrant”. A critical study of the literary documentation shows that every Princeps tended to discourage political humor when it meant an effective danger for the imperial authority, but also that emperors knew how to use laughter and humor to create a form of “inapproachable approachability” which constituted a foundation of imperial charisma and strengthened the new regime, born from the “Roman revolution”

Gender differences in labour market outcomes are pervasive in current society. Competitiveness is viewed as a possible factor contributing to the favourable labour market outcomes for men, with the stylised fact being that men are more competitive than women on average. In this study, we experimentally investigate whether institutional structures (gender-based Affirmative Action and Role Models) mitigate the gender differences in competitiveness. Although Affirmative Action has been explored in the literature, the longer-term implications of the preferential treatment creating role model representation have not been examined. Consistent with the literature, we find men have a higher preference for a competitive environment compared with women in our sample. However, there are no significant impacts of the gender based institutional structures on the choice to compete in our experiment. When analysing the responsiveness of performance to a competitive environment and the associated beliefs, we see the female role model treatment encourages a competitive spirit in everyone, whereas the Affirmative Action treatment has a negative effect on the competitive performance of African men. In this experiment, gender-based institutions therefore either have unexpected effects of encouraging competitiveness in all participants, or inadvertently reinforce competitiveness gaps across other dimensions of identity, such as population-group. One therefore needs to be considerate of other dimensions of identity in addition to gender when devising preferential treatment policies, and the resulting role model representation, in practice. Changes in beliefs can only partially be exercised as an explanatory channel for these effects.

João Guimarães Rosa definia-se como um homem do sertão e mostrava-se fortemente ligado à terra. Ao longo de sua monumental obra encontramos densos registros sobre essa ligação. Em 1965, revela em entrevista a Gunter W. Lorenz seu peculiar interesse por animais, diplomacia, religiões e idiomas. A biografia do escritor não se dissocia da obra. Dessa forma, evidencia-se em O burrinho pedrês e Conversa de bois - o tratamento conspícuo dispensado aos bichos. Assim sendo, procederemos a um exame das referidas novelas de Sagarana tendo como escopo a estreita relação do homem com a natureza e, mais detidamente, com os animais. Para tanto, utilizaremos textos teóricos que versem acerca da inserção humana em ambiente natural - entre eles os de Leonardo Boff e Nancy Mangabeira Unger - e literários - mitos gregos e latinos e lendas indígenas. Veremos ainda que as novelas selecionadas para análise apresentam crianças e animais. Esses seres interligam-se e vivenciam a atuação de forças sobre-humanas em suas vidas. Ao longo do trabalho relacionaremos ao tema de nossa pesquisa os desdobramentos da autodefinição de Rosa supramencionada em sua existência (infância em Cordisburgo, vida doméstica no Rio de Janeiro, viagens ao exterior e ao interior de Minas Gerais, passeios) e obra (novelas de Sagarana, sobretudo).

The notion of gender is discussed. Historical and contemporary perspectives in stereotyping are investigated to determine the extent of the problem, with a view to enhancing the experience of boys in musical endeavours. There are no studies of this nature in existence in Australia and the existing research from other western cultures, while providing some basis, cannot be directly applied to this setting. Furthermore, existing studies have not brought about significant change in the gender order in music education. This project seeks to address these shortcomings. Masculinity in Australia is examined, with particular emphasis on the effects of hegemonic masculinity on those who do not fit this stereotype. Issues of bullying, depression and suicide are addressed. Empirical and sociological studies are re-examined in the light of more recent thought on the subject, particularly with regard to the possible causes of non-participation in singing and playing of certain instruments. The extent to which stereotyping of musical activities exists in Australian schools is reviewed through a series of studies of participation and literature. A number of subjects are interviewed to discover some of the reasons behind the choice of particular instruments. The thesis concludes with some perspectives arising from recent case studies of schools that have, to some extent, overcome some of the gender issues raised in earlier discussion. Constructs of masculinity and femininity effect musical participation in Australian schools and the extent of this effect is examined in this thesis.

Focus group discussions were analyzed to gain a better understanding of adolescent boys’ psychosocial processes of navigating their romantic relationships. In particular, the role of gender norms in boys’ navigation of romantic relationships was explored. Using grounded theory methodology, focused discussions were held with 23 boys in Grades 9 through 12 at high schools in an urban school district. The central phenomenon identified to be occurring during these participants’ relationship navigation was getting experienced in dating. Six other categories were identified: initiating dating relationships, benefiting/”gaining” from relationships, communication, managing relationship issues, relationship breakdown, and disengaging from dating. Contextual conditions were also found to be influencing participants’ relationship navigation: struggling to be confident, social/digital media culture, peers’ perceptions, parental expectations, multicultural context, female gender stereotypes, and finally, masculine gender norms. The significance of the findings in relation to boys’ relationship navigation, social and emotional learning, the development of psycho-educational interventions, and the implications for school psychologists are discussed.

The study sets out to investigate the educational achievement of British Pakistani boys. Its foundations comprise my own journey; beginning in Pakistan and continuing in Birmingham. Central to the study is the post-war development of the Pakistani community in Birmingham, growing from a few hundred to their current presence - 14% of the city’s population. Pakistani children are now close to becoming the largest ethnic group in Birmingham schools. The study arose out of a concern that large numbers of the community’s young people were concluding their schooling without achieving the benchmark qualification. With the backdrop of the national policy response to the education of ethnic minority children, the study relies on research undertaken in three state secondary schools in different parts of Birmingham. The backdrop to the research was provided by numerous documents gathered during my time in Birmingham. The primary research relied on a mixed-methods approach, involving a questionnaire administered to Y11 students and interviews with British-born Pakistani boys, their parents and teachers. The findings confirmed earlier research, in terms of the importance placed on education by the Pakistani community. Very early in the research it was clear that religion was considered important by the Pakistani children and their parents. This shaped the study and gave rise to a number of implications which are fundamental to the schools in Birmingham. For example, it was found that Pakistani children spend many hours in after-school religious classes. This has a clear opportunity cost, as it takes them away from doing school related work. The study concludes with a discussion of responsive education that might better meet the needs of Pakistani children so that fewer of them leave school without the benchmark qualification. It also points to the possibilities of an education which integrates the Islamic religious education and education of the world.

Die Familie der Mykobakterien setzt sich aus pathogenen und apathogenen Vertretern zusammen. In dieser Arbeit wurden 3 Mitglieder dieser Familie für Untersuchungen herangezogen: ihr prominentester pathogener Vertreter Mycobacterium tuberculosis, der Erreger der Tuberkulose, das als Impfstoff eingesetzte Mycobacterium bovis BCG, das durch Attenuierung aus dem Rindertuberkulose-Erreger Mycobacterium bovis hervorging und das apathogene Bodenbakterium Mycobacterium smegmatis. Ein Schlüssel zum Verständnis der Mykobakterien und speziell ihrer Widerstandsfähigkeit ist die Kenntnis ihrer komplexen Zellwand. Peptidoglycan als deren Bestandteil und insbesondere der mittels Undecaprenyl-Monophosphat bewerkstelligte Transport von Peptidoglycan-Vorläufern aus dem Cytoplasma an die Zelloberfläche steht dabei im Zentrum der Zellwandbildung. In M. tuberculosis, M. bovis BCG und M. smegmatis wurden Deletionsmutanten für die Undecaprenyl-Phosphokinase (Upk) hergestellt. Für M. smegmatis wurde gezeigt, daß die delta upk Deletionsmutante, in Übereinstimmung mit Deletionsmutanten homologer Gene in anderen Bakterien, eine erhöhte Sensitivität gegenüber dem die Zellwandsynthese hemmenden Antibiotikum Bacitracin aufwies. Überraschenderweise zeigte M. tuberculosis delta upk diesen Phänotyp nicht. Weiterhin ließ sich für M. smegmatis delta upk im Vergleich zum M. smegmatis Wildtyp Peptidoglycan an der Zelloberfläche in geringerem Maße nachweisen. Eindrucksvoll zeigte sich die Bedeutung der Undecaprenyl Phosphokinase in der gestörten Entwicklung von Biofilmen im Falle der M. smegmatis delta upk Mutante. Dies galt sowohl für in vitro Bedingungen als auch für ein, im Rahmen dieser Arbeit, neu entwickeltes in vivo Modell. Vergleiche von M. tuberculosis Wildtyp und M. tuberculosis Mutante auf der Ebene von Proteom- und Transkriptom-Analysen führten zur Identifikation eines zum mykobakteriellen Fettsäure-Synthese II (FASII) System gehörenden Operons, das im Falle der upk-Deletion verstärkt exprimiert wurde und damit möglicherweise einen Kompensationsmechanismus für die fehlende Phosphokinase darstellt. Eine reduzierte Persistenz von M. smegmatis delta upk in infizierten Makrophagen legte nahe, daß Upk bei mykobakteriellen Infektionen eine entscheidende Rolle für das Überleben der Bakterien und ihre Virulenz spielt. Dies konnte erstmals für M. tuberculosis im Rahmen von Maus-Infektionsversuchen gezeigt werden. M. tuberculosis delta upk ließ sich als neues Mitglied in eine Reihe von als growth in vivo (giv) klassifizierten Mutanten einreihen. Die Herstellung von Deletionsmutanten wird als Möglichkeit betrachtet, verbesserte Impfstoffe herzustellen. Die physiologische Konsequenz der Deletion sollte bestenfalls neben einer Attenuierung des Ausgangsbakteriums (gilt besonders für M. tuberculosis) eine Überexpression protektionsrelevanter Antigene zur Folge haben. Im Vergleich zum bestehenden Impfstoff M. bovis BCG führte die Impfung von Mäusen mit M. bovis BCG delta upk sowohl zu geringerer bakterieller im Anschluß an die Vakzinierung als auch zu einer verbesserten Langzeit-Protektion gegen Tuberkulose.
The family of mycobacteria is composed of pathogenic and apathogenic bacteria. This study was performed with 3 members of this family, the most prominent pathogenic member, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, the vaccine strain Mycobacterium bovis BCG which was developed by attenuation of the bovine tuberculosis agent Mycobacterium bovis, and Mycobacterium smegmatis which is apathogenic and widely distributed in soil. A key to understanding mycobacteria and, especially, their resistance is to understand the complexity of their cell wall. Peptidoglycan is a major component of the cell wall and the transport of peptidoglycan precursors out of the cytoplasm to the bacterial surface by undecaprenyl monophosphate is central to cell wall synthesis. Therefore, deletion mutants of the undecaprenyl phosphokinase gene (upk) were generated in M. tuberculosis, M. bovis BCG, and M. smegmatis. In the case of M. smegmatis it was shown that a delta upk deletion mutant, as with deletion mutants of homologous genes in other bacteria, exhibited an increased sensitivity to the antibiotic bacitracin, indicating that cell wall synthesis was hampered. Surprisingly, M. tuberculosis delta upk did not exhibit this phenotype. Furthermore, a lower level of peptidoglycan was detected on the cell surface of an M. smegmatis delta upk mutant compared to M. smegmatis wildtype. Relevance of the undecaprenyl phosphokinase was demonstrated by impaired biofilm development in the case of the M. smegmatis delta upk mutant. This was observed in vitro as well as in vivo using an animal model which was newly developed in this thesis. A fatty acid synthase II (FASII) system related operon revealed by comparative proteome- and transcriptome-analyses comparing M. tuberculosis wildtype and M. tuberculosis delta upk mutant, and may reflect a compensatory mechanism for the loss of upk. Reduced persistence of M. smegmatis in infected macrophages suggested a decisive role of Upk in mycobacterial infection concerning survival and virulence of bacteria. This was later demonstrated to be true for M. tuberculosis in a mouse model. M. tuberculosis delta upk was, therefore, classified as a new member of the group of growth in vivo (giv) mutants. Construction of deletion mutants is a strategy to identify improved vaccines. Ideally, the physiologic consequences of a gene deletion would result in attenuation of the modified bacterium (especially in the case of M. tuberculosis) and overexpression of antigens relevant for protection. Compared to the existing vaccine M. bovis BCG, vaccination of mice with M. bovis BCG delta upk exhibited a lower bacterial load upon vaccination as well as an improved long-lasting protection against M. tuberculosis infection.

The study illuminates the influence of social networks on the HE decision-making process of white working-class boys. The impact of gender, race and social class social characteristics on white working-class boys HE decision-making is assessed. In addition, how white working-class boys define and discuss the membership of their social network, together with the phenomenon of social network influence on white working-class boys’ decision-making about HE at Key Stage 4. The expansive literature review explores the problem that white working-class boys are seriously under-represented in HE and examines widening participation government policy, factors influencing the under-representation of boys in HE and the influences on the decision-making process for HE participation. The literature review concluded the strong impact of social characteristics and social relations on influencing white working-class boys to aspire to HE. The unique interpretive study is illuminated through a case study approach, which uses qualitative structured interviews with nine boys and their social network as a way of revealing the boys’ HE decision-making phenomenon. Interpretive analysis highlights the influence of social network and the boys’ perspectives specifically identified the processes of ‘talk’, ‘behaviour’, and ‘experience’. Analysis of social network data exposed their influence of talk, aspiration raising, and support for agency. The findings suggest that access to social capital resources pervades the ability of the social network to influence boys’ HE decision-making process. Mothers have a powerful and positive influence on their son’s aspirations for HE, but mothers with limited access to social networks with HE experience were limited in their ability to influence. Teachers all possess experience of HE, and those teachers who are prepared to share their social capital resources provide another valuable influence on boys’ HE decision-making process. The study concludes that the government policy for increasing white working-class boys’ HE participation must include provision for supporting mothers with raising and vitally enabling their son’s aspirations for HE. In addition, schools have a critical role to play on educating social networks and boys on the importance of developing and utilising social capital in order to ‘get ahead’. Furthermore, schools in disadvantaged areas already have experience, as a result of participating in ‘Aim higher’ (2004-2011) provision, of using cultural and social capital to support disadvantaged boys with their HE decision-making process. Schools knowledge of HE and networks could be further utilised to support their white-working class boys with their HE decision-making process.

This thesis explored the role of the six wealthy Russian businessmen, the oligarchs, in 1996 reelection of President Boris Yeltsin. This research was qualitative and descriptive. The goal was to collect the information from various sources and summarize it, demonstrating how the interference of the oligarchs reflected on the process of the election, as well as on the careers of their own.The research concluded that the oligarchs' role was, first of all, in the organization and financing a highly effective election campaign team; consolidating the business elite and big capital around Yeltsin, using the media that they controlled as a tool of pro-Yeltsin propaganda; and influencing some key decision taken by Yeltsin. The result was Yeltsin's victory, and the increase of the oligarchs' wealth and political power.This ability of the oligarchs to manipulate politics completely cemented the interrelation between business and politics in Russia, which contributed to Russia's reputation as a country of corruption and lawlessness.

This research aimed to find out whether or not linguistic theories on how men and women use language can be applied to boys and girls, and their language use, in two selected schools in Southern Sweden. The data was accumulated throughout field investigation. Five questions were created and six teachers from two selected schools were asked to read the questions and keep them in mind while observing them in their class for one week. They were asked to write the answers and hand them in within one week. When the data was accumulated I started to draw connections to already existing theories on how men and women use language and, I started to compare it with how boys and girls use language from these two schools. The answers from the six teachers that participated in this research were not diverse, and they corresponded with the theories cited in this essay’s literature review on how men and women use language. For instance, boys tend to use humor as a tool when they communicate in order to occupy the centre of attention just like men, while girls tend to be emotionally involved while communicating just like women. This is one example of many similarities that this research has found.

BORIS is normally present in the testes; however, it is aberrantly expressed in various tumours and cell lines. The main aim of this study was to investigate BORIS expression in prostate cell lines and tumours, and the importance of BORIS in the regulation of genes in prostate cells, in particular, the androgen receptor CAR) gene, associated with the development of more aggressive prostate tumours.

Quase um ponto cego na fortuna crítica rosiana, “O burro e o boi no presépio” ressente-se também de uma evidente negligência editorial – das 26 imagens referidas pelos poemas, duas reclamam revisão e cinco não constam na única edição ilustrada, esgotada há anos. Tendo reconstituído e sanado as correspondências imagem-poema, nosso trabalho analisa, num primeiro momento, “O burro e o boi no presépio” enquanto ponto de interseção das veredas-mestras da poética de Rosa – a espacialidade, a performatividade, a autoinclusão e a preocupação metafísica. Considerada nessas quatro dimensões fundamentais, cada obra e a obra inteira de Rosa emergem como um poema, uma configuração de nexos não-lineares que um autor implícito conspícua e deliberadamente atuante faz por apontar. Em Corpo de Baile o nexo fundamental é justamente o presépio. Mistério fundador no cristianismo, a Natividade associa-se à devoção festiva e risonha que encontramos no ciclo das sete novelas, onde o presépio é, mais do que leitmotif, uma celebração da poesia como lugar do sagrado. Sempre lado a lado com os poemas do presépio, a segunda parte do trabalho percorre Corpo de Baile como essa celebração performada na coenunciação literária, profissão de fé a um tempo estética e religiosa, de um escritor para quem “credo e poética são a mesma coisa” (ROSA In COUTINHO, 1983, p.74).
“The ass and the ox at the Nativity scene” has been all but ignored by critics as well as by the publishing world – evidenced by the fact that the only illustrated edition of the 26 poems has been out of print for over twenty years, with all its editorial errors as yet uncorrected. Having addressed these issues raised by the correspondence between the poems and the images to which they refer, we begin by discussing the work as a converging point for some of the hallmarks of Rosa’s poetics – spatiality, performativity, reflexivity and metaphysical concern. In this light, each book taken individually, as well as Rosa´s body of work as a whole, can be interpreted as poetry -- poetry in the sense of a semantic configuration in which meaning is conveyed as much through non-linear channels as through linear ones. In Corps de Ballet, it is precisely the Nativity scene which serves as the core nexus linking together the various strands of imagery. As Christianity’s founding mystery, the Nativity is directly associated with the forms of festive and gleeful worship found in all seven stories. More than mere leitmotif, it is in itself a celebration of poetry as a vehicle for holiness and spirituality. Drawing further parallels with the Nativity poems, part two analyses Corps de Ballet in terms of this celebration qua literature, exploring writing itself as an act of faith that is at once aesthetic and religious in the work of an author for whom “creed and poetry are one and the same”(ROSA In COUTINHO, 1983, p.74).

Le mélèze d'Europe (Larix decidua) est traditionnellement exploité pour son bois de qualité. Malheureusement, la culture de cette essence hors de son aire de distribution a été un échec. L'hybridation avec le mélèze du Japon (L. kaempferi) est une voie prometteuse, en particulier grâce à l'hétérosis manifesté par cet hybride. Au cours de cette dissertation, nous valorisons les données d'un diallèle multi-site intra- et inter-spécifique d'âge avancé. Le 1er chapitre présente l'analyse de traits de production et de qualité du bois. Nous confirmons ainsi l'hétérosis pour les traits liés au volume. Cet hétérosis n’entraîne pas de contrepartie en termes de qualité, et se montre stable d'un site à l'autre.Au contraire, d'autres traits ne présentent pas d'hétérosis, mais davantage d'héritabilité.Les performances additives pour ces traits sont stables d'un site à l'autre, et en espèce pure vs. en hybridation. Au cours du 2ème chapitre, nous nous intéressons au rôle de la plasticité phénotypique de traits de formation du bois dans la construction de l'hétérosis.Le mélèze hybride apparaît comme le taxon le plus plastique : tout comme ses espèces parentes, il produit un cerne de croissance étroit en conditions hydriques limitantes, mais sa croissance radiale surpasse celle de ses parents quand l'eau est abondante. Ce 2èmechapitre est également un premier pas vers la compréhension du rôle de la plasticité phénotypique dans la construction de l'architecture de la variance génétique entre la circonférence et la densité des troncs. Cette thèse se termine sur une synthèse, au cours de laquelle nous discutons les retombées de nos résultats pour l'amélioration du mélèze hybride
European larch (Larix decidua) has been historically exploited within its natural rangefor its high quality wood, but the attempt to grow this species outside its native range was a failure. Hybridization with Japanese larch (L. kaempferi) is a promising path, in particular because of the heterosis this hybrid manifests. In this dissertation, we took advantage ofan old-enough, multi-site experiment with an inter-/intra-specific mating design. The first chapter presents the analysis of several traits involved in wood quality and productivity. We confirmed heterosis for volume related traits. The heterosis came with no counter part inwood quality, and it was stable across sites. Contrarily, some other traits showed no heterosis but higher heritabilities, and the additive performances for these traits were stable across sites and in pure species vs. in hybridization. In the second chapter, we investigated the role of phenotypic plasticity of some wood formation traits in the construction of the heterosis. Hybrid larch appeared as the most plastic taxon: it equaled the parental controls in producing narrow growth increments under drought, but it produced the largest rings in favorable water availability conditions. This second chapter was also a first step towards a better understanding of the role of phenotypic plasticity on the construction of the genetic variance architecture between larch stem circumference and density. The dissertation ends with a synthesis in which we discussed the implicationof our findings for the breeding of hybrid larch

Notre objectif était de mieux comprendre la régulation de la biosynthèse des parois secondaires lors de la formation du bois chez l'Eucalyptus, le feuillu le plus planté au monde et le deuxième dont le génome est séquencé. Nous avons caractérisé trois facteurs de transcription de la famille MYB-R2R3 et montré que EgMYB137 était un nouveau régulateur de la biosynthèse des parois secondaires. Nous avons aussi démontré que l'activité transcriptionnelle de EgMYB1, un répresseur de la biosynthèse des lignines, était régulée par une interaction protéine-protéine impliquant une histone linker (EgH1.3). Enfin, nous avons mis au point une méthode de transformation homologue chez l'Eucalyptus via A. rhizogenes. Les " hairy roots " transgéniques sont adaptées à la caractérisation fonctionnelle de gènes reliés à la formation du xylème. Nos résultats ont permis de découvrir de nouveaux acteurs impliqués dans la régulation des parois secondaires, mettant en lumière la complexité de ce processus mais aussi offrant de nouvelles perspectives pour l'amélioration du bois pour des applications industrielles comme la production de bioéthanol de deuxième génération
Our objective was to better understand the regulation of the biosynthesis of the lignified secondary cell walls during wood formation in Eucalyptus, the most planted hardwood tree, and the second whose genome has been sequenced. We functionally characterized three Eucalyptus transcription factors of the R2R3-MYB family and identified EgMYB137 as a new regulator of secondary cell wall deposition. We also showed that the transcriptional activity of EgMYB1, a repressor of lignin biosynthesis was modulated by protein-protein interactions involving a linker histone (EgH1.3). Finally, we set up a homologous transformation system for Eucalyptus using Agrobacterium rhizogenes. The transgenic hairy roots are suitable for high throughput functional characterization of cell wall-related genes. Our findings not only allowed getting new insights into the complexity of the network regulating secondary cell walls but also open new avenues to improve wood quality for industrial applications such as second-generation bioethanol

Using qualitative research methods, this study looked at the role of the single-sex versus the coeducational school environment as a key factor in determining boys' perceptions of success in French communicative activities as defined in Standard 1.1 of ACTFL 's et al Standards for Foreign Lanquage Learning : Preparing for the 21st Century (1999). A total of twenty-four boys (twelve from a single-sex high school and twelve from a coeducational institution) were observed in class and subsequently interviewed. The goal was to determine if cognitive gender differences surounding foreign language communicative activities, socio-cultural concerns as respects boys' perceptions of the appropriateness of high achievement in French, and teacher pedagogy all lend themselves to the single-sex environment such that it provides a more fertile setting for boys' high achievement. The findings indicated that the single-sex sample's self-perceptions of competence were healthier in the single-sex environment for a variety of reasons. The single-sex school boys were more willing to work hard against the perception held by both sample sets that girls may possess an innate advantage in the speaking skill, they held a wider definition of what is appropriate male behavior (which included high achievement in French), and they (together with their coed counterparts) found the all boys environment more accepting of errors and more risk-friendly in general - crucial ingredients for developing the French speaking skill. The single-sex sample more willingly embraced school as a rigorous academic forum, whereas the coed sample was more likely to see school as appropriate for building social skills and for cultivating an understanding of the opposite sex. These findings suggest that the single-sex classroom environment is superior for boys as they strive to achieve in female sex-typed arenas such as French communicative activities

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research on how children learn to behave in gendered ways has focused on a „top-down‟ process of socialisation which positions children as passive recipients of gender norms of the societies they inhabit. In contrast, this ethnographic study explores gender as constructed and experienced by children themselves with a specific focus on play as a means through which social identities are produced. This study focuses on children between the ages of six and ten and explores how they construct and experience being „boys‟ and being „girls‟ through play in a township primary school near Durban. This research is influenced by the emerging perspective in academic ways of thinking about childhood; identified by Prout and James (1997) as the „New Sociology of Childhood‟ (NSC). Departing from the traditional socialisation ways of thinking about children‟s social worlds from the perspectives of adults, the NSC views children as active agents in society whose social lives, behaviours and relationships are worthy of study in their own right. In this study, I engage with children‟s agency by adopting a critical child-centred methodological approach to explore symbolic meanings the young boys and girls in the study attach to play. In adopting this research approach, this study generates new understandings about ways in which South African boys and girls in the study construct and experience schooling and play. Findings raise various implications for ways of working with children, both in research and in education, in ways which engages with their own constructions of the stereotypes of masculinity and femininity through play.

Particular attention is paid to the Gender Myth - a belief that the manifestation of sex/gender is polarized, that the male half of such a dualism is superior to the female half, that such differentiated sex/gender is grounded in essential biological difference between males and females; and the way that it impacts on these school children, in reference to their internalization of discourses and practices associated with sport, work and domesticity, and sexuality.

Psychopathy, as conceptualized by Cleckley (1941), describes a constellation of psychological and behavioral correlates including superficial charm, untruthfulness, lack of remorse or shame, poor judgment, and failure to learn from experience. Based on Cleckley's initial work, Hare (1991) developed a two-factor model of psychopathy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles that sensation seeking, impulsivity, ADHD, conduct disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder have on adolescents classified as psychopaths. The participants consisted of 79 adjudicated male adolescents in a maximum-security facility. As hypothesized, adolescent male psychopaths had higher levels of sensation seeking, impulsivity, conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. A discriminant function analysis found that sensation seeking, impulsivity, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder was moderately useful in classifying adolescent psychopathy. The results suggest that behavioral dysregulation is an important aspect of adolescent psychopathy. The relationship of these data to theories of adolescent psychopathy is discussed.
