Résumé :
Bluetooth Low Energy is becoming increasingly popular in mobile applications due to the possibility of using it for proximity data. Proximity can be estimated by measuring the strength of the Bluetooth signal, and actions can then be performed based on a user's proximity to a certain location or object. One of the most interesting applications of proximity information is automating common tasks; this paper evaluates Bluetooth Low Energy in the context of using smartphones to automatically unlock a door when a user approaches the door. Measurements were performed to determine signal strength reliability, energy consumption and connection latency. The results show that Bluetooth Low Energy is a suitable technology for proximity-based door locks despite the large variance in signal strength.

Résumé :

This report describes the design and construction of a prototype that automatically aims a microwave link towards a target. The link, that is located on a mobile aerial mast, is used by Saab Training Systems as a part of an infrastructure network. The report also discusses the development of a GUI that communicates with the control unit by Bluetooth.

The control unit, called Pan/Tilt-controller, controls the position of the link by stepping motors. One motor controls the azimuth angle and the other one controls the elevation angle.

By a GUI the operator enters the coordinates on its own position and the targets position. Hereafter a bearing is calculated and it will be sent up to the control unit.

The control unit will sense its own direction by a magnetic sensor that works as an electronic compass. The Pan/Tilt-controller will then rotate the link to reach the targets coordinates. Alternatively you can control the position of the link manually by the GUI.

The report also discusses the functionality of the sensors and tests have been conducted to determine the accuracy of the control unit. The Pan/Tilt-controller can rotate a link 360º around its own axis and also tilting the link ±90º. The Pan/Tilt-controller can direct a link towards a target with an accuracy of 5º -10º.

Résumé :
A decade ago, wireless technology was unimaginable in its application in industrial automation as wireless had poor reliability and security in the form of time delays and frame losses. Also, lack of interoperability and standards has been a barrier for wireless applications in control system. But with recent advancements in wireless technology, and with the underlying advantages of wireless like low infrastructural costs, scalability, mobility, and ability to operate in extreme and remote environments, many are seriously considering wireless for industrial automation solutions. For wireless implementation in industries, it is important to understand its characteristics - security, update rates, data types, protocols, and latency time. Protocol being an important characteristic of any communication, is to be chosen intelligently for maximum efficiency. Because of the complexity of creating a communication protocol, existing information technology (IT) protocols such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ZigBee were used in industries. But as applications widened, and interoperability became an important factor to be considered, it was required to standardize the protocols used. ISA SP100 and WirelessHART are results of this standardizing process. For the last few years, there has been a huge discussion on which of these protocols are robust and work better, and none has emerged as clear winners. The aim of this thesis is to explore the capabilities and limitations of each of these protocols for various industrial applications. This thesis considers all these protocols and helps choose the best fit for industrial applications and includes study of security, reliability, and efficiency of these protocols.

Personal Number (PN) service or Follow-me service allows a user to access telecommunication services with any terminals (e.g., fixed telephones or mobile phones) in any locations within the service area. To provide this feature, the PN user needs to manually register with a phone number every time he/she enters a new location. If the user forgets to register the new phone number, the incoming calls will be mis-routed. To provide user-friendly Follow-me service, this thesis proposes Automatic Follow-me Service (AFS) approach that automatically updates the PN records in the Follow-me database. The significance of our approach is that AFS can be integrated with existing Follow-me databases to automate PN services offered by different PSTN service providers. We show how AFS can be implemented by using the Bluetooth technology. Then we propose an analytic model to investigate the performance of AFS. The analytic results are validated by simulation experiments. Our study suggests guidelines to select polling frequency to optimize the AFS performance.

In this research, we adopt Arduino's ATmega328 chip, Bluetooth communication technology and Android APP to design remote monitoring automation systems. Remote monitoring is a very basic and important technology for the modern industry. We collect the required physical information from the sensors and analog to digital converter, and program the microcontroller to automatically identify the received data and make responses with a pre-described sequence such as a general programmable logic controller (PLC) does. And APP which is developed for Android system is used as the human machine interface (HMI) to communicate with the Arduino chip. The user can easily have the information about the controlled system through the APP, and make decision by manual or automatically to activate the associated functions to make the system work followed the desired. The designed two systems are: (1) a low-cost air quality remote monitoring and control system used indoors. The system is applied to prevent form the harmful smoke which comes from the traditional religion of burning incense, the system can be used to automatically filter out the smoke by acting the ventilation system. (2) A fully automatic automotive air conditioner cleaning system, which was originally designed by programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface (HMI) made by touch panel. The functions which are originally controlled by PLC are substituted by Arduino, and APP is designed to communicate with Arduino as the HMI in PLC-based system. The prototype system is tested to be able to as an alternative for a sequential controller.

Résumé :
In today’s world, the applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems are leaping by extending their scope from military applications on to commercial and medical sectors as well. Owing to this commercialization, the need to append external hardware with UAV systems becomes inevitable. This external hardware could aid in enabling wireless data transfer between the UAV system and remote Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) using low powered architecture like Thread, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). The data is being transmitted from the flight controller to the ground control station using a MAVlink (Micro Air Vehicle Link) protocol. But this radio transmission method is not secure, which may lead to data leakage problems. The ideal aim of this research is to address the issues of integrating different hardware with the flight controller of the UAV system using a light-weight protocol called UAVCAN (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Controller Area Network). This would result in reduced wiring and would harness the problem of integrating multiple systems to UAV. At the same time, data security is addressed by deploying an encryption chip into the UAV system to encrypt the data transfer using ECC (Elliptic curve cryptography) and transmitting it to cloud platforms instead of radio transmission.

Résumé :
There are many different types of automatic data collection technologies that have been used in transportation system applications such as pneumatic tubes, radar, video cameras, inductive loops detectors, wireless toll tags, and global positioning systems (GPS). Nevertheless, there are still multiple examples of important and helpful transportation system data that still require manual data collection. In this research, the automatic transportation system data collection capabilities are expanded by enhancements in the use of wireless communications technology. In recent years, smartphones and electronic peripherals with wireless communication capabilities have become very popular. Many of these electronic devices include a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi wireless radio, whose presence in a vehicle can be used as a vehicle identifier. With wireless on-board devices available now and in the future, this research explores how roadside data collection units (DCUs) communicating with on-board devices can be used for the automated data collection of important road system data such as intersection performance data. To this end, two approaches for wirelessly collecting vehicle movement over a short road segment were explored. One approach utilized the collection and triangulation of wireless signal strength data, and demonstrated the capabilities and limitations of this approach. The second approach focused on developing methods for utilizing wireless signal strength data for vehicle point detection and identification. The vehicle point detection methods developed were applied to collect travel time data over signalized arterial roads, and to collect intersection delay data for a three way stop controlled intersection. The results from these case studies indicate a significant advantage in the proposed data collection system over the existing data collection approaches presented in the literature.
