Résumé :
The article presents with psychological characteristic of biographical reflection as a reflective analysis of the life course. The author provides an overview of contemporary scienific discussion about biographical reflection, and adduces the data obtained through the study, the subject of which was the psychological content, functions and genesis of the bio-graphical reflection of a personality. In the contemporary scientific psychological discourses, the biographical reflection is considered as a method of studying the personality on the scale of the life path, or as the main property of the personality and of the autobiographical subject. The researchers in Russia and the West are focused on the heterogeneous mechanisms of autobiographical analysis of life events, conditions for understanding the meaning of life, autobiographical knowledge, life narrative, interpretation of an autobiography and a biography. They consider as well the dynamics of these mechanisms in lifespan development. The author offers the reader her own view of the contemporary debate about psychological content, and functions and genesis of the biographical reflection, highlighting important, from her point of view, a reflection of the autobiographical Self in the life changes when there are no social and cultural sources and resources to support development. In the original concept, the author proposed to consider biographical reflection as a resource for the personality self-development in adulthood. This work examined the specific of biographical reflection in an alternation two forms of the reflective analysis: a reflection of «life of Me» and a reflection of «life of Other» (a prototype of generation and culture). The formation process of biographical reflection at the age 17-25 is associated with integrating the heterogeneous mechanisms of life course reflective analysis (existential, cognitive, narrative, and hermeneutic) and interiorizating biographical signs and symbols, which is accompanied by the motivation of self-determination. The author considers the further development of biographical reflection (in age 25–65) as a stage of mastering by adults a reflection as a development resource for affirming the position of the author of life, and gaining arbitrary control over autobiographical Self, and exercise of free choosing a life course, and search for the meanings of life. The author argues that thanks to the mechanisms of biographical reflection, connections are established between the separate life events and new integrity arises as a life course that becomes a form of self-development of a modern adult. These results suggest that modern adults, who are choosing the individualization of life course, are more likely to have higher biographical reflection and use it as recourse to gain control over the quality of the individual life in time.

Résumé :
Biography is a unique form of narration in ethnography and historiography. This article attempts to position Lin Yueh-Hwa’s works within the context of sociological and anthropological debate since the 1920s. In doing so it explores the potential uses of the biographical method in the study of Chinese history and society. Although Lin was a bearer of the biographical tradition of Chinese literature and history, his works were also profoundly influenced by both the narrative method of life history in the United States and social-life studies in France. In addition to these two influential biographical traditions, anthropologists in Britain developed the genealogical approach to investigating sacred kingship. This study regards these three traditions of individual-life biography, social-life studies and genealogy as a “biographic triad”. Relevant works in contemporary Chinese sociology and anthropology are reviewed within this framework. It is conceivable that phenomenological description alone is insufficient when applying the biographical method. One must take into consideration Chinese centralized power and the overall social structure of China. Only by placing “life biography” against society’s ever-changing processes can one turn individual stories into powerful narratives depicting the whole structure of Chinese social life.

Résumé :
The tradition of hoarding axeheads is a well-known phenomenon within the first agrarian societies on the North European Plain. Unfortunately, the majority of known hoards have been found as stray finds or under circumstances with poor or no documentation, leading to considerable source critical issues. However, in this paper we analyze four hoards that have either been professionally excavated or have had their find circumstances recorded and are all found within the same geographical area along the southern Limfjord region of Denmark. The detailed contextual information of these hoards is used as a foundation for interpreting these hoards and question the oft-repeated dualistic categorization of hoards as wetland or dryland phenomena. The analytical method employed in this study uses micro- and macroscopic observations to create biographies for the axeheads and to so shed new light on hoarding practices. This approach challenges the previous macro-scale approaches. The results in the study provide a detailed insight on production, use-life, exchange and deposition of axeheads in hoards within the TRB. The aim of the paper is to forward this analytical approach and to offer a fresh perspective on the TRB hoards. In concluding, avenues for future research and debate are sketched out.

Résumé :
Both conversation-analytic and ethnographic studies of interaction tend to isolate situated conduct from the full biographical context that is meaningful to actors. This article argues that there are good analytic reasons to recover some of that biographical context by incorporating character-driven ethnographic representation within interactionist research. I make this case in reference to a rule dispute captured on video during an ethnography of a public park basketball game. Through a biographically contextualized analysis of players’ situated conduct, I show how character representation allows unspoken threads of actors’ lives to become analytic resources. Incorporating biographical context also opens a methodological path for interactionists to leverage the close-up study of situated encounters for empirical claims about broader forms of social organization. In this case, I argue that character-driven representation allows for an analysis that identifies rule disputes as an interactional mechanism of socially integrative park use.

Résumé :
Scholars of Shakespearean studies often encounter the challenge of limited information regarding the biography of the renowned playwright, the textual history of his works, and the intended meaning of some of his texts. However, this study asserts that Shakespeare’s non-dramatic works offer valuable material for biographical interpretation, thereby enhancing readers’ understanding of the texts. The article shows that by adopting an interpretational circle approach, scholars can extract biographically and historically relevant information from these works after gathering initial information and acknowledging the limitations of a biographical approach. The author’s analysis suggests that Shakespeare’s sonnets provide rich biographical material, while the interpretation of “The Phoenix and the Turtle” requires a broader understanding of the historical and cultural context. Shakespeare’s narrative poems, “Venus and Adonis” and “The Rape of Lucrece,” fall somewhere in between these two extremes. This study demonstrates the importance of critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to navigate complex literary texts for scholars of Shakespearean studies, highlighting the professional competencies required for success in this field.

Résumé :
The article is based on a case study that combines biography research with discourse analysis. The research question is: How, post-1945, might Austrian women who were involved in National Socialism use a gendered victim discourse as a pattern of interpretation to deal with their biographical experiences during National Socialism. As a first step, the article outlines the methodological approach employed. The use of a combination of biographical and discourse analysis takes into account the fact that biographies are structured by discourses and prepares the ground for the analysis of biographical accounts as everyday discourses. In this specific case, the discourse analysis reveals that a particular discourse called a gendered victim discourse allows National Socialism to be forgotten. At the same time, however, the case reconstruction of three biographies shows that the women do not use the gendered victim discourse as a discursive interpretation of National Socialism in their biographical accounts. Concerning this result the article argues that biographical significant experiences of events during National Socialism that remained meaningful after 1945 cannot simply be ‘forgotten’. The appropriation of a discursive pattern of interpretation is selective and depends on biographical structures.

Résumé :
Self-management is recommended by policy and clinical guidelines as a way to contend with the growing incidence of osteoarthritis-related joint pain in an ageing population. Sociologists assert that self-management is as much about lay strategies for dealing with the biographically disruptive qualities of chronic illness as opposed to solely complying with medical regimens. The original concept of biographical disruption coined by Bury is not uncontested. Chronic joint pain has been characterised as featuring ‘co-existing meanings’ of significance and consequence. The former conferring no biographical disruption due to osteoarthritis being associated with ‘normal ageing’ and the latter causing biographical disruption due to the corporeal limitations joint pain imparts, which, in turn, can influence whether, why and how self-management is undertaken. This article reports findings from repeat interviews and a diary study completed by 22 participants with chronic knee pain. We explore the co-existing but temporally divergent ‘meanings as significance’ associated with knee pain. Participants describe the onset and current experience of the pain in terms of biographical normality (retrospective or contemporaneous meanings). Future meanings as significance are mediated by cultural beliefs about ageing and current physical consequences of the condition, and also have a distinct character of their own. Knee pain is associated with the possibility of disability and harbours a distinct risk; potential disruption to everyday social relationships, notably relating to care and dependency. In turn, future meanings of significance influence the preventative self-management strategies that people utilise. We argue for a more cogent theoretical understanding of temporal dimensions of biographical disruption, biographical work and subsequent self-management by utilising and extending the thought of Bury, and Corbin and Strauss. Doing so helps to understand patient self-management strategies and facilitates self-management support in clinical settings for osteoarthritis and potentially other chronic conditions.

Résumé :
Abstract In this article we examine the relationship between various biographical transitions of young adulthood and the structure of social networks. We ask how personal networks change in size and composition over the course of family formation or expansion, and due to other biographical transitions. We use data from an exploratory longitudinal study that uses mixed methods of social network analysis. We were able to reconnect with 29 of 98 young adults who were interviewed from 2004 to 2006, and conducted detailed qualitative interviews with 18 of them in 2011. Our findings suggest that biographical transitions do rather have an effect on the composition than on the size of personal networks. Biographical transitions do not necessarily lead to a decrease in network size due to network partners dropping out. These network partners often get substituted by new network partners that match changing priorities in different life stages. Particularly important transitions are the interviewees’ own parenthood, as well as the parenthood of their network partners. Transitions in relationship status, relocations, and job changes were also identified as relevant biographical transitions.

Résumé :
The article substantiates the expediency of using the biographical approach to study the pedagogical personality of the out- standing historian, local historian, teacher, leader of education and science Vasyl Loburets (1930-2006). Based on the analysis of the works of foreign (Erik Erikson, C. Wright Mills, Carlo Ginzburg, Ronald A. Giere, William H. McNeill, Antonina Kloskowska) and Ukrainian (H. Belan, N. Dichek, M. Leshchenko, N. Lisovska-Muskieieva, M. Sydorov, O. Sukhomlynska) researchers, the article reveals the peculiarities of using the biographical approach, the sources and methods of studying the creative biography of the scientist. It is proved that at the end of the twentieth century, the biographical approach became widespread not only in psychology and sociology, but also in the literary, historical, historical and pedagogical fields. As a result of these transformations, a sepa- rate scientific field emerged – biography – the object of study of which was a prominent personality in the context of his or her various connections with society. The article substantiates the idea that biography as a separate scientific field has acquired an interdisciplinary status and is based on the methodology of the humanities (sociology, philosophy, psychology, history, literary studies, history of pedagogy, etc.).The use of a biographical approach allows for a greater contextual understanding of the issue. By studying individual bi- ographies, historians of education can gain a deeper understanding of the social, political and cultural contexts of a particular historical era. The formation of scholarly ideas and personal experiences is largely influenced by significant historical forces, so the study of biographies can help to reveal the cultural and social connections between educational definitions. The use of the biographical approach creates a holistic view of science that combines the intellectual, professional and personal aspects of scientific achievements, and provides a fundamental and critical analysis of the educational sphere. The biographical approach is a universal tool for studying Vasyl Loburets’ pedagogical personality. On the basis of biographical research, socio-pedagogical reality is studied in chronological and cultural aspects.

Sociological, qualitative, biographical research is distinguished by its interest in the case. At the same time, this research seeks—often through case studies—to understand or explain supraindividual, repetitive phenomena which are, to some extent, general. In this article, we look at how cases are treated in biographical sociology. We present our own empirical experience, consisting in autobiographical narrative interviews with participants of a nationwide panel survey, who were randomly drawn to the panel many years ago. We show the possible consequences, both methodological and theoretical, of this way of selecting cases, quite unusual for biographical sociology. We wonder whether and to what extent the experience of the “ordinary person,” the Everyman, can be reflected in sociological works based on the biographical method.

Biographical method is based on the theory of humanistic direction. It involves subjective assessments of facts, social consulting, access to a high level of generalization. In historical science and literary work with biographies it is a traditional genre. In sociology, the study of biographies was formed in the method of the microsociological paradigm of “soft” data analysis. The architectonic of method consists in a flexible construction of chosen techniques and procedures. The paper details the author’s method of analyzing life scenarios. This technique in the structure of the complex biographical techniques helps the respondent understand the tragic eventfulness of their life, to make a choice to change the script. This choice determines the future success of the respondent and their descendants. The conclusions are drawn on the basis of the author’s using the biographical method in studies of the fate of the Siberians and social consulting with clients.

Résumé :
The article focuses on biographical concepts as linguistic signs expressing an individual’s generalized knowledge of the meaning of life in an autobiographical narrative. In the mainstream of cultural-historical psychology, the biographical concepts are considered as psychological tools for reflecting on the meaning of life. We hypothesized that the level of generalization of the biographical concepts correlates with the level of awareness and personality reflection in adulthood. The sample of our study consisted of 110 people aged 17—57 years. The study measured the following four factors: generalization of the biographical concept in the autobiographical narrative; biographical reflection; meaningfulness of life; type of reflection. We found that the level of generalization of the biographical concepts in adulthood undergoes a transition from the unstructured set of attributes of the concept’s meaning (the syncret), through the isolation of formal attributes associated with the concept (the complex), to the abstract and generalized meaning of the concept (the notion). Also, higher levels of generalization of the biographical concepts in midlife as compared to early adulthood are associated with the individuals’ increasing awareness of life and reflection skills.

Résumé :
Of the great many minor yet significant composers who lived around the time of Haydn and Mozart and who deserve to be better known, Karl von Ordonez, a Viennese composer born two years after Haydn, has been the subject of much recent scholarly interest. Landon (1959) introduced this composer to the modern musical world, he has since figured in numerous books, monographs and articles (most notably Landon 1962a and 1978, Kirkendale 1966, Apfel 1972, and Larsen 1978), and he has been the subject of several recent studies (Brown 1974a, 1974b, 1978, 1981a, 1981b, and Young 1980b). However, no detailed biographical study has yet been published, and it is the purpose of the present article to meet this need.

Résumé :
Abstract The article analyzes the term “biographical method”, which consists in the idea of a biography being one’s life journey. Its essence was disclosed through the views of the leading Ukrainian and foreign scholars. The origins of the biographical method as the main tool for studying prominent figures in pedagogy were specified. The article contains the domain-specific classification of biographical sources including autobiographies, biographies, life stories, personal experience stories, surveys and interviews, public and private archival materials, printed and hand-written heritage of authors, memoirs of their contemporaries, etc. Specific attention is paid to the fact that biographical researches can characterize the course of life of a particular figure in pedagogy, the era in which he/she lived and worked, the process of shaping and developing his/her worldview and pedagogical views. Consequently, one can highlight the main stages in the pedagogue’s life, better understand the essence of his/her cultural, educational activities, grasp his/her unique identity, reveal certain patterns in various facts of his/her biography that have caused the emergence and development of particular educational and pedagogical ideas. Based on theoretical analysis of the works by Ukrainian and foreign scholars, it was concluded that the biographical method could determine the influence of society on the development of the individual, his/her life position, values and ideals, different moments of the society’s life at one time period or another, social contexts, rules and norms. It was found that when studying the biographies of prominent figures in pedagogy one should be able to balance the given material on the pedagogue’s activities, the description of his/her works and theoretical analysis and understanding of the trends in the development of his/her views and a reasonable assessment of his/her contributions.

Résumé :
The article focuses on the case study of the life history of Weronika, a person biographically experiencing the consequences of the transformation process in Poland. On the one hand, the text concentrates on showing the change in the status of the narrator’s family from a privileged position in the socialist period to the experience of unemployment and poverty after 1989. On the other hand, the text analyzes the necessity of the narrator’s mother’s emigration to Italy in the mid-1990s. Thus, the article focuses on the narrator’s experience in the context of being a migrant woman’s child. This experience is related to the time of socialization and education, which was difficult for the narrator, and the consequence of which is shown in the text in connection to the narrator’s persistence in trajectory. The text also presents the perspective of transnational motherhood within the framework of Polish women’s migrations after 1989. Also, an important perspective adapted in the article is the experience of migration by the narrator, who at the time of the interview has also been living in Italy for 10 years. Permanent emigration of the narrator is associated in her life history with high biographical costs. The article is, therefore, an attempt to present migration as a source of suffering in relation to the context of being a migrant’s child and being a migrant oneself. The analysis of Weronika’s case is also an attempt to show the relationship between the individual experience of the narrator and the mechanisms of collective influence. Thus, the text treats the analyzed life history as one of the biographical accounts reflecting the biographical and social processes assigned to a specific time frame. In this perspective, the text aims to reconstruct the complexity of these processes and to interpret the experienced social reality in an individual biography.

Résumé :
The paper focuses on the stages in the development of mind in adults related to biographical self-reflection. The hypothesis of the study was that biographical self-reflection affects meaning-making, self-regulation and adaptation in the adults. The sample consisted of 480 individuals aged 25—65 years. The study measured indicators of biographical self-reflection, social psychological adaptation, life meaningfulness and self-regu- lation. We have found that in the age period of 46-65 years there is a shift from self-reflection on the path of life to self-reflection on life experience, which reinforces the influence of biographical self-reflection on the meaningfulness of life and self-regulation in the adults. Our study also revealed increases in biographical self-reflection at the beginning of age crises in adulthood (30—35, 40—45, 55—60 years) when, as a result of reflective analysis, the adult realizes the need for change in his/her life.

Résumé :
Doctorov gives an interview where issues are touched upon related to the development and achievements of a project on the history of Soviet/Russian sociology, a project which he has been curating for almost 20 years, as well as to a biographical study in the field of American sociology and the study of public opinion. Doctorov’s project deals with solving the theoretical, methodological and empirical issues of applying the biographical method in historical-sociological research. The author’s main methodological developments include the concept of Russian sociology’s rebirth, substantiation for generational-functional analysis, and the notion of a biographical quality to creative work in sociology, which includes the recently launched development of non-linear biographical analysis. The article discusses the author’s empirical research related to determining the generational structure of Russia’s sociological community, as well as the possibility of its study by means of in-depth interview via e-mail. It also examines the content and relevance of a collection of interviews with Russian sociologists (titled “Big portrait”), as well as an online-book titled “Biographical interviews with social scientist colleagues” (this one is interactive) and the nine-volume “Modern Russian sociology: historical-biographical pursuits”, all of which mention the main findings of B. Doctorov’s project.

Résumé :
This article introduces a network visualization method that enables a thorough analysis of the link between life history and social networks. Network visualizations are generally static, and as such they tend to disguise rather than uncover change and continuity within networks, and the influence that certain events may have on someone's sociability. The Biographical Network (BN) is a mixed method approach combining life story interviews with formal SNA that attempts to overcome the consequences of this lack of dynamism in network visualizations. In the first part of the article the underpinnings of the BN design and the logistics of the method are outlined in relation to a doctoral study on cultural cosmopolitanism. In the second part findings from applying the BN method with 28 young British and Spanish adults living in Madrid and Manchester are used to demonstrate its utility and its limitations for sociological analysis.

Résumé :
Pattinapalai is one of the literatures that testifies to the life lived by the ancient Tamil people. This book is composed by the poet Uruthirakannanar. The specialty of the ancient Chola country, its wealth, the heroic deeds of Charikalan and the way of life of the people are highlighted. The song is set at 301 feet. Pattinapalai is the epitome of the charcoal Chola specialty of Kavirippoompattinam. Sangam literature holds a unique place in the creative context of Tamil literary history. The Sangakkala people can be discriminated against as natural morality because they lived with natural morality and as heroic age because of the emphasis on heroic sentiments. Songs are a mixture of literature and life. Sangakkala songs are also known as people's life songs. Most of them are spontaneous poems that express their innermost feelings. The study is set to explore the emotions of the poets, the lifestyles of the people, and the thoughts of life.

Résumé :
Epistemological Questions Concerning the Study of Biographical. Material: The Consequences of Choise of Methodology Using my own research on written life stories of Finnish lone mothers as a case study, this paper examines the consequences of choice of methodology when using biographical material as data. I focus on two methodo-logical alternatives: analysing biographical material as documents of preceding events, or as meaning-making con-structs. Treating biographical material as a gateway into studying events in people’s lives reduces the heuristic value of the material, and consequently questions of truth and reliability become problematic. Nevertheless, this still seems to be the preferred methodological alternative of many sociologists. If biographical material is analysed for its own sake, focussing on the creation of meaning through story-telling, the above-mentioned problems of truth and reliability diminish considerably. Using research on lone motherhood as an example, I ex-plore arguments for the use of narrative analysis, examining what it has to offer methodologically, theoreti-cally and conceptually.

Résumé :
Despite the wide use of testimonies in collective memory of violent historical and political events, proper psychosocial studies addressing the process of becoming a testimony remain scarce. In the context of the massacre of Piazza della Loggia in Brescia, this study examines the biographical transition from victims to testimonies of people directly or indirectly involved in the event. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, 13 biographical stories were collected and analysed through qualitative methodology. Out of the four biographical transitions evinced by the results of this study and besides the scenario of a victim not becoming a testimony, the results highlight three different biographical transitions: the immediate transition from victim to testimony, transition as awareness, and transition as a process of knowledge. These three biographical transitions are summarized in three types of identity: ‘heroic testimony’, ‘civic testimony’ and ‘epistemic testimony’. The results are hence discussed in the light of the community practices of collective memory and psychosocial research on the testimonies.
