Résumé :
Abstract: Distillation is a method of separating mixtures based on differences in volatility of components in a boiling liquid mixture. It is defined as a process in which a liquid or vapour mixture of two or more substance is separated in to component fractions of desired purity by the application and removal of heat. In this work importance is given to Binary distillation columns. In the Binary Distillation, the feed to the process consist of mixture of two components (A & B) and after the distillation two products will be generated. It is very important to model a distillation column and perform its analysis before the distillation column is practically implemented. Distillation columns are generally considered as chemical systems, for modelling chemical systems one can use mass balance equations

Résumé :
Variants of the extractive distillation of chloroform - methanol - tetrahydrofuran equimolar mixture with industrial separating agents are considered. The basic system shows opposite deviations from the ideal behavior, because it contains binary azeotropes with minimum and maximum boiling points (3.3.1-4 system according to Serafimov’s classification). The choice of selective substances for extractive distillation was carried out taking into account the concentration dependences of the excess molar Gibbs energy of the binary constituents of the derivative system “chloroform - methanol - tetrahydrofuran - industrial test agent (ethylene glycol (EG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N-methylpyrrolidone (N-MP))” at 101.32 kPa. Based on the results of the evaluation of the thermodynamic criterion, DMSO and N-MP are recommended. Both agents show selective effect when separating two binary constituents. EG is selective only with respect to chloroform-tetrahydrofuran mixture. Since the tested agents show different selective effects, the final agent choice determines the qualitative composition of the product flows in the column for the extractive distillation of the three-component mixture (the first column of the flowsheet) and, accordingly, the structure of the total flowsheet. The schemes consist of two two-column complexes for extractive distillation (for the basic three-component mixture and for the binary mixture). The maximum contribution to the total reboiler energy consumption of the distillation columns is made by the first extractive distillation column: 65% (EG), 53% (N-MP) and 24% (DMSO). The use of the most selective agent reduces the energy consumption of this column: the reboiler load is maximal in the case of EG, in comparison with which the load is 47% lower in the case of N-MP and 76% lower in the case of DMSO.

Résumé :
The efficiency of industrial column packings is commonly tested by standard hydrocarbon mixtures. However, a reduced efficiency value is often observed, particularly during distillation of aqueous mixtures. In this paper, distillation experiments with various binary mixtures were carried out on different column packings to evaluate relative separation efficiencies of mixtures for each packing material. Each of the binary mixtures, which comprised heptane–methylcyclohexane, ethanol–water, morpholine–water, and acetic acid–water, was distilled under atmospheric pressure and total reflux ratio on column packings that were made of PTFE, ceramic, zirconium metal, and inox steel 316. According to the results, aqueous solutions of morpholine and acetic acid generally exhibited low relative separation efficiency (in comparison with standard mixture of heptane–methylcyclohexane), ranging between 40 % and 80 %. The highest relative efficiencies were observed with packings made of steel and ceramic. These observations will be useful for the future design of distillation columns, especially for aqueous solutions.

The analysis and review of the scientific literature on methods and approaches to energy saving in distillation, as one of the most energy-intensive processes for the separation of binary and multicomponent mixtures was carried out. Directions of the scientific literature are highlighted, showing the relevance of the thermodynamic method assessment of separation processes. A comparative analysis of various methods of energy conservation in the separation of liquid binary mixtures by the distillation method is performed (a binary mixture of benzene-toluene was chosen as an example). A conventional distillation column as well as a column with a heat pump and a column with heat integration were considered. As a result of the calculation experiment for each option performed using the Aspen Plus software package the optimal column parameters were determined - the total number of stages and the position of feed stage. The heat consumption in the column boiler was taken as the objective function. It is also shown that with the same characteristics of the columns, the best way to organize the process for separating the selected mixture is to compress the steam stream from rectifying profile of the column with its subsequent use in the boiler of the stripping profile according to the principle of a heat pump. It was established by a calculation experiment that heat integration by compressing steam from rectifying profile of the column and supplying it to the stripping profile gives significantly less energy saving. The calculation of internal energy saving by distillation column was carried out and it was shown that the distributed heat removal from the plates of the rectifying profile of the column and the supply of this heat to the stripping profile plates reduces internal energy saving and leads to an additional increase in heat consumption in the boiler.

Résumé :
In this work, a methodology for the integration of design and control methods for distillation columns through dynamic optimization tools is proposed. For this, a dynamic model of the distillation column that can be adapted to different mixtures (binary and multicomponent) is established. The proposal focuses on defining an objective function to simultaneously maximize the performance in the mixture separation under the lowest energy consumption. The design variables (i.e., number of trays and feeding stage), as well as the controller parameters, are considered as decision variables. The results obtained show that it is possible to improve the overall performance of the distillation column, compared to traditional strategies.

Résumé :
Objectives. The aim of this study is to investigate different distillation modes of a binary ideal mixture and determine how various factors affect heat consumption in the column boilers. In addition, it intends to assess the difficulty of separating mixtures. Our research is based on analyzing the characteristics of vapor-liquid equilibrium.Methods. To conduct our study, we used a graphic-analytical tool to calculate the distillation process of a binary mixture and mathematical models based on the Aspen Plus software package along with DSTWU, RadFrac, and the Sensitivity module. We also used the Peng-Robinson equation (PENG-ROB) to determine the liquid-vapor equilibrium.Results. We employed the graphical method and mathematical models to obtain the operation parameters of two column variants for the distillation of binary ideal benzene-toluene mixtures. In each variant the initial mixture contained the same amount of the low- and high-boiling component. The number of plates in the column sections, reflux ratio, energy consumption, and indicators of internal energy saving were determined.Conclusions. Study results show that using the coefficient of the component distribution between the vapor and liquid phases is a promising method for preliminary assessments of the separation difficulty and measurements of the expected heat consumption in the boilers of columns. Comparison studies showed that the heat consumption in the boiler decreases as the internal energy saving in the columns increases.

Résumé :
Distillation column is very important and high consuming energy equipment in oil refineries, such that 3% of the energy consumption in the world is allocated in distillation column. The fact that let controlling the distillation column an attractive field for researcher, and hence different control schemes are proposed by researchers. In this paper we will provide a comparative study between different control schemes for a binary distillation column two simple configurations (the most known ones) (LV&DV) and two more complicated ones ((L/D,V/B) & Ryskamp’s) we compare them in the basis of interactions and disturbance propagation. The mathematical models for the material balance configurations for the considered configurations are deduced using mathematical transformations (in the paper the general case of transformation between any two configurations is presented), taking the conventional configuration (LV) as a based configuration, the Dynamic Relative Magnitude Criterion (DRMC) is used to assess the interactions and disturbance propagation. The results show that the ratios control schemes are less sensitive to interactions compared with energy balance configuration LV. The same was noticed with DV configuration however other process drawbacks let it not recommended in industrial field.

Résumé :
The bond graph methodology for modelling an integrated energy distillation column is applied in this paper. The distillation column is built by five trays for a binary mixture. However, due to its modular construction in a bond graph, the number of trays can be increased. In order to link the analysis tools of systems modeled in the bond graph to the mathematical model given to a distillation column, a junction structure of the proposed bond graph is presented. Hence, this junction structure is a way to obtain the state space representation of the modeled column in bond graphs. Likewise, it is well known that distillation columns determine a class of nonlinear systems, so throughout this paper, these systems in a bond graph approach can be analyzed. In order to learn the behavior of the distillation column in the physical domain, simulation results using 20-Sim software are shown. In addition, with the simulation of two case studies consisting of two mixtures with different relative volatilities, the versatility of the column model in a bond graph is presented. In both cases, the increase in the feed flow, the mole fraction of the light component in the feed or the distillate reflux that enriches the concentration of light in the column determine an increase in the mole fraction of light in the distillate and in the bottom reflow. Further, the control design for a distillation column in the physical domain can be extended.

Résumé :
Abstract Batch time requirements are provided for the separation of binary zeotropic mixtures in two different multivessel columns (with and without vapor bypass), a non-cyclic two-vessel column and a regular batch column based on dynamic simulations. The first three columns are operated as closed (total reflux) systems and the regular batch column is operated as an open (partial reflux) system. We analyze the effects of feed composition, relative volatility and product specification on the time requirements. The multivessel arrangements perform better than the regular batch column, which requires from 4.00 to 34.67% more time to complete a given separation. The elimination of the vapor bypass in the multivessel column is impractical though it has a positive effect on the batch time requirements. Thus, the multivessel column, with the vapor stream bypassing the intermediate vessel, is proposed as the best candidate for a binary zeotropic mixture with low concentration of light component, low relative volatility and high product purity demand. Furthermore, an experimental multivessel column with vapor bypass is built and the corresponding experiments verify the simulations.

Résumé :
Objectives. Synthesis and comparative analysis of the extractive distillation flowsheets for aqueous mixtures of solvents utilized in pharmaceutical industries using the example of a methanol−tetrahydrofuran−water system with various compositions. The ternary system contains two minimally boiling azeotropes that exist in a vapor–liquid phase equilibrium. To evaluate the selective effect of glycerol, the phase equilibria of the methanol–tetrahydrofuran–water and methanol–tetrahydrofuran–water–glycerol systems at 101.32 kPa were studied.Methods. The calculations were carried out in the Aspen Plus V.9.0 software package. The vapor–liquid equilibria were simulated using the non-random two-liquid (NRTL) equation with the binary interaction parameters of the software package database. To account for the non-ideal behavior of the vapor phase, the Redlich–Kwong equation of state was used. The calculations of the extractive distillation schemes were carried out at 101.32 kPa.Results. The conceptual flowsheets of extractive distillation are proposed. The flowsheets consist of three (schemes I–III) or four (scheme IV) distillation columns operating at atmospheric pressure. In schemes I and II, the extractive distillation of the mixtures is carried out with tetrahydrofuran isolation occurring in the distillate stream. Further separation in the schemes differs in the order of glycerol isolation: in the third column for scheme I (traditional extractive distillation complex) or in the second column for scheme II (two-column extractive distillation complex + methanol/water separation column). Sсheme III caters to the complete dehydration of the basic ternary mixtures, followed by the extractive distillation of the azeotropic methanol–tetrahydrofuran system, also with glycerol. Sсheme IV includes a preconcentration column (for the partial removal of water) and a traditional extractive distillation complex.Conclusions. According to the criterion of least energy consumption for separation (the total load of the reboilers of distillation columns), sсheme I (a traditional complex of extractive distillation) is recommended. Additionally, the energy expended for the separation of the basic equimolar mixture using glycerol as the extractive agent was compared with that expended using another selective agent: 1,2-ethanediol. Glycerol is an effective extractive agent because it reduces energy consumption, in comparison with 1,2-ethanediol, by more than 5%.

Résumé :
This paper presents a systematic methodology for flowsheet generation for separating binary azeotropic mixtures using homogeneous azeotropic distillation. A new classification system for ternary mixtures using ‘standard distillation line maps’ defined in Sutijan et al. (2012) is employed. The new characterisation system is able to link candidate entrainers to flowsheet structures which can facilitate the separation. The sequences considered include pressure-swing distillation, two and three-column flowsheets with or without boundary crossing and the use of single and double-feed columns. For a given ternary mixture, suitable flowsheet structures that can facilitate the separation can be automatically identified. The method is illustrated using examples.

Résumé :
Abstract To get the better product quality and to decrease the energy consumption of the distillation column, an accurate and suitable nonlinear model is crucial important. In this work, two types of model have been developed for an existing experimental setup of continuous binary distillation column (BDC). First model is a theoretical tray-to-tray binary distillation model for describing the steady-state behavior of composition in response to changes in reflux flows and in reboiler duty. Another model is an artificial neural network (ANN)–based input/output data relationship model. In ANN-based model, temperature of first tray, feed flow rate, and column pressures have been taken in addition to reflux flow rate and reboiler heat duty as inputs to give the more accurate I/O relationship. The comparison of output of ANN model and the equation-based model with the real-time output of the experimental setup of BDC has been given for the validation of developed models.

Résumé :
In this article, the normal continuous mode of distillation is considered using an example of binary two-phase mixture distillation. In practice, there are often deviations from the normal mode. It has been proved that the deviation leads to an increase in energy consumption for the ongoing process. In the industry, columns separating binary mixtures are normally the finishing apparatuses in the flow-sheet separation of multicomponent mixtures, which are obtained in the reactor as a result of main reactions as well as by-reactions. The distillation of binary mixtures is relatively simpler than that of multicomponent mixtures. In this regard, the fundamental parts of monographs especially in the thirties-forties of the last century started with the study of binary mixtures, although multicomponent mixtures were the main focus. The aim of analyzing this complex and the highly energy-intensive process is to facilitate the choice of a mathematical model for the process and the determination on its basis variance. Variance is a set of independent variables that allow calculation of a process only after taking into account the number of independent equations related to these variables. A case of deviation from the normal distillation regime where an under-heated liquid enters the column feed has been revised. This leads to an increase in energy consumption during distillation. Key indicators of the normal regime relative to the level of feed and the temperature of the liquid are shown in the text.

Résumé :
The divided wall column (DWC) can achieve sharp separations of three or more components in a single shell, substituting conventional sequences of two or more binary<br /> distillation columns, with lower expenses. Despite these advantages, DWC models are not available in commercial chemical process simulators. To simulate DWC, users must employ instances of conventional column model and couple them in different configurations. In this paper, a DWC model was developed in EMSO (Environment for Modeling, Simulation and Optimization). DWC model was then used for simulating the separation of an equimolar mixture of three hydrocarbons. Results show that, depending on the number of trays, DWC presented energy savings compared to two ordinary distillation columns. Better separation was obtained when the number of divided trays was close to half the number of total trays. However, the liquid and vapor flow rates split into the divided section play a key role in the separation.

Résumé :
Optimal synthesis of distillation sequence is a complex problem in chemical processes engineering, which involves process structure optimization and operation parameters optimization. The study of the synthesis of distillation sequence is a crucial step toward improving the efficiency of chemical processes and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This work introduced the concept of binary tree to encode the distillation sequence. The performance of the six evolutionary algorithms was evaluated by solving a 14-component distillation sequence synthesis problem. The best algorithm was used to optimize the operation parameters of a triple-column distillation process. The total annual cost and CO2 emissions were considered as the metrics to evaluate the performance of triple-column distillation processes. As a result, NSGA-II-DE was found to be the best one of the six tested evolutionary algorithms. Then, NSGA-II-DE was applied to the distillation sequence optimization to find the best operating parameters, which led to a significant reduction in CO2 emission and total annual costs.

Résumé :
Isopropyl alcohol is widely used as industrial chemical intermediates and common solvents in households, pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, and medical purposes. The high purity of isopropyl alcohol requires special separation from its impurity i.e. water due to isopropyl alcohol and water form an azeotropic point, which is difficult to separate using a conventional distillation method. The azeotropic point of this mixture is at isopropyl alcohol mole fraction of 0.68 and temperature of 353.4 K. One of the optimum methods to separate an azeotrope point is through the extractive distillation which use a third component as a solvent. Glycerol is one of the solvents which can be used as a potential entrainer in the extractive distillation. Glycerol is produced in the biodiesel production as a by-product. Moreover, glycerol is an eco-friendly chemical. In this work, the simulation of the extractive distillation of isopropyl alcohol/water system with glycerol as an entrainer was simulated using Aspen Plus. The Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) model was used as thermodynamic model in the simulation. The effect of stage number, binary feed stage, entrainer feed stage, and reflux ratio to the purity of isopropyl alcohol, and reboiler-condenser duties were examined to achieve the optimum design for the extractive distillation column with less energy requirements. The simulation results showed that the optimum configurations in the extractive distillation column design are at 25 theoretical stages, binary feed stage (BFS) of 20, entrainer feed stage (EFS) of 2, and reflux ratio (RR) of 0.5 to produce isopropyl alcohol with the purity of 99.27%. The design and sizing of the extractive distillation column were also proposed in this work.

Résumé :
In this paper the control of a binary distillation column is described. This control is done with fuzzy logic, one with PI- like fuzzy controller and the other with modified PI fuzzy controller, using the minimal rules for fuzzy processing. This work is focused on model reduction of Wood and Berry binary distillation column to get the best performance. It is desired to minimize the rules in order to reduce the computation time to make a faster decision. Comparisons will be made between two versions of fuzzy controllers utilizing reduced rules to verify the outputs. The controlled variables are top composition with high concentration and bottom composition with low. To demonstrate the performance of the fuzzy PI control schemes, results are compared with a classical PI controller and optimal methods, like Differential Evolution (DE), Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO).The proposed structure is able to quickly track the parameter variation and perform better in load disturbances and also for set point changes. Then all the processes of the distillation column with it? s fuzzy controllers are simulated in MATLAB software as the results are shown.

Résumé :
The oil refinery plants have a particularly high energy consumption in the distillation process. Several authors state that these are the systems with the highest energy consumption in the petrochemical industry. Currently, work is being done on the implementation of adaptive controllers in order to improve the efficiency of the distillation process and the quality of the product. In this work the control of a binary distillation column developed within a 3D virtual laboratory is presented. Adaptive control by reference model (MRCA) is used for the manipulation of bottom and distillate concentrations. Initially, the mathematical description of the process is obtained, together with the computer-aided design, to subsequently implement the control technique. As a result, the behavior of the controlled system in simulation is shown and compared with the response of the embedded system within the virtual environment. The main contribution of this work is the interaction that a user can have with this type of processes and the possibility of implementing modern control strategies within this type of environments as a low-cost tool to support education and training activities.
