As the cultural upheaval of the `60s fought its way into the `70s, Bill Talen began his career first as a poet, hitchhiking the interstate highways from the Midwest to the Coasts eagerly engaging the literary, intellectual, and artistic opportunities offered by those cultural venues. He settled in San Francisco where he earned an M.A. in Theatre Arts and joined with friends to open a theatre, "Life on the Water." Here Talen met Sydney Lanier, a minister, who became his lifelong mentor and champion. Lanier recognized in Talen a bold presence which accompanies successful preachers and elevates their sermons. He promoted and supported Talen's move to New York City where Talen fully embraced his role as Reverend Billy and directed the full might of his talents against consumerism--especially Michael Bloomberg's socio-economic goals for the City. Eventually, Talen's critique came to challenge foreign policies that promote corporatism, environmental decline, and the global homogenization of culture. Talen's body of work is extensive and two strong threads run through it that are exemplary. One evidences a complete and purposeful disregard for any artistic borders, especially the edgy land between acting and not-acting, including the tiny gradients as one merges into the other. Talen's recognition of the porosity of borders likely facilitated his willing assimilation of his character, Reverend Billy, into his own daily life and persona, until the two merged, endowing Talen, the performance artist, with the skills and insights of a spiritual leader. The second thread is simply Talen's life's journey from reluctant performer of a religious role, to the willing engagement of that role, and finally the adoption of spiritual responsibility, eventually forming a church and a religion based on activism and a strong commitment to environmental causes. The performance artist became Reverend; the Reverend was born to act. This merging of talents, goals, and dreams created a character who would run for public office. It created a performance artist who would wed lovers, baptize new congregants, and console the grieving.

The thesis begins with an introductory chapter that explains the problems that short story theorists encounter when they try to define the short story genre. Part of the problem results from the lack of a definition of the short story in the Aristotelian sense. A looser, less traditional definition of literary genres helps solve some of the problem. Six short stories follow the introduction. "Billy and Me," "Queen of Hearts," "The Whiskey Man," and "Psychedelic Trash Cans" are representative of traditional short stories. "Mourning Coffee" and "Seven X Seven" might very well fit into other genres, but even these stories fit a loose definition of the short story genre.

Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five focuses on Billy Pilgrim’s travels through time and his experiences during World War II. More than that, it is a story about the journey of a clearly troubled protagonist whose mental state, best described as broken, is never fully explored in the novel. The aim of this essay is to bring light to the intricacies of Billy’s curious mental state, and to explore the theory that the alien encounters as well as the time travelling that he experiences are the result of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that Billy suffers from. This is done by analyzing Billy’s experiences with time travel, emotional numbing, and Tralfamadorians and connecting it to known symptoms and causes of PTSD. The results show that Billy does indeed showcase strong signs of PTSD, which were most likely caused by a combination of childhood experiences and trauma during the war. This PTSD manifests itself through Billy’s time travelling and alien encounters, which are used as a coping mechanism.
Kurt Vonneguts Slakthus 5 fokuserar på Billy Pilgrims resor genom tiden och hans upplevelser under andra världskriget. Ännu mer än det så är det en berättelse om resan av en helt klart besvärad huvudperson vars mentala tillstånd, som bäst kan beskrivas som brutet, aldrig riktigt förklaras i romanen. Syftet med denna uppsats är att skapa en klarhet till förvecklingarna av Billys besynnerliga mentala tillstånd, och att undersöka teorin att utomjordingarna såväl som resorna genom tiden som han upplever är resultat av posttraumatisk stressyndrom som Billy lider av. Detta utförs genom att analysera Billys upplevelser av tidsresor, emotionellt bedövande och Tralfamadorer och ansluta dem till symtomer och orsaker till PTSD. Musical characterisation plays an important role in Britten's operas. The aim of this study was to determine how Britten depicts the diverse, dualistic characters in Billy Budd through music. Ambiguity, which is characteristic of this opera, is the result of the manner in which the plot is portrayed musically through developing motives. The conflict between the diverse characters in Billy Budd is depicted by the thematic material. The musical ideas and motives change as the plot becomes more complex. The method of investigation was, in the first instance, to analyse the musical ideas associated with each character. Second, the manner in which these ideas change through the course of the opera was pointed out. The story does not only concern itself with the relationship between good and evil. The fate of the three main characters, Billy, Vere and Claggart, is precisely the opposite of their true nature. Who they really are, is not reflected in their doings, as depicted by the integrated themes. Billy, the innocent boy, kills. Vere, the father figure, doesn't protect Billy on the day of his conviction. Claggart, who manipulates to have his own way, can't avoid his own death. This study shows that Billy is represented by the stammer figure and Vere by the "Starry Vere" motive. Vere's inner conflict is depicted by the ambiguous combination of a major third and minor third interval. The confusion that eventually leads to Billy's demise is represented by intervals of a perfect fourth, associated with Claggart. During the course of the opera, Vere's music is infiltrated by Claggart's motives. Billy is represented in the opera by the woodwind instruments, Vere by the strings and Claggart by the brass instruments.

Inom loppet av sex månader mördades tre personer i Hudiksvalls kommun. Morden blev uppmärksammade i media och beskrevs som brutala i sitt tillvägagångssätt. En 20-årig man dömdes för mordet på Vanja Nilsson och Kjell List och en 22-årig man dömdes för mordet på Tova Moberg.Ambitionen med uppsatsen var att undersöka hur Hudiksvalls tidning med hjälp av gestaltning och dramaturgi formar en mediebild av en individ. I det här fallet en bild av två män, från att dessa häktats fram tills dess att påföljd meddelats av tingsrätten. Ännu en ambition var att undersöka hur samma tidning förhållit sig enligt det pressetiska ramverket i sin rapportering kring gärningsmännen och dess offer.Teoretiska utgångspunkter aktuella för uppsatsen har varit gestaltningsteori och dramaturgi. Dessa visar hur och med vilka hjälpmedel man framställer händelser och individer i media. Utgångspunkten medier och brott blev en stor tillgång då den fokuserar helt på medierna och dess omättliga aptit för brott och avvikelser. Pressetiken och de pressetiska rekommendationerna var nödvändiga för att se hur Hudiksvalls tidning förhållit sig enligt dessa.Uppsatsen är huvudsakligen kvalitativ men har stärkts med kvantitativ metod.Analysen visade att Hudiksvalls tidning gestaltat gärningsmännen utifrån avvikelser i vederbörandes personlighet och bakgrund. Hos 20-åringen var gestaltningen nyanserad av mannens psykiska ohälsa medan gestaltningen av 22-åringen var influerad av mannens bakgrund med droger och kriminalitet. Pressetiskt visade sig ett ställningstagande från tidningens sida där man gick ut med den ena gärningsmannens identitet i form av både bild och namn, medan den andra gärningsmannen förblev anonym.I analysen med fokus på gärningsmännens offer, var resultatet att namn och bild publicerades på alla tre offren. I fallet Tova Moberg fann jag att det till viss del fanns ett allmänintresse då hon från början var anmäld som försvunnen. I fallet Vanja Nilsson och Kjell List fann jag däremot inget uppenbart allmänintresse i identifierandet av offer, att Hudiksvalls tidning är en lokaltidning visade sig däremot vara av betydelse.
In less than six months three people are murdered in the county of Hudiksvall, Sweden. The homicides were described as brutal and received a lot of media attention. A 20-year-old man was later convicted for the murder of Vanja Nilsson and Kjell List and a 22-year-old man are later convicted for the murder of Tova Moberg. The ambition with this paper has been to examine how Hudiksvalls newspaper, with the help of framing and dramaturgy creates a media image of a person. In this case, an image of two men, from the moment they were arrested, until penalty was given by the district court. Another ambition was to investigate how the same newspaper handled the media coverage in relation with the [Swedish] press ethical framework, both in its reporting about the perpetrators and its victims.Theoretical framework relevant to this essay has been framing theory and dramaturgy. These show how and with which means you make and portray events and individuals in the media. Media and crime were also a big theoretical asset since its main focus is on the relation between media and crimes. The [Swedish] press ethical framework was necessary as a theoretical approach since one of the essays main issues were to see how Hudiksvalls newspaper handled the media coverage in relation to the press ethical guidelines. The essay is mainly qualitative but has been strengthened by quantitative method.The analysis showed that Hudiksvalls newspaper portrayed the perpetrators based on abnormalities in their personality and backgrounds. The image of the 20-year-old man was shaded by the his psychological problems, while the image of the 22-year-old was influenced by his background with drugs and crimes. The analysis also showed that the newspaper revealed the identity of one of the perpetrators’, while the other offender remained anonymous.In the analysis focusing on the perpetrators' victims, the result showed that names and images were published off all three victims. In the case of Tova Moberg, I found that to some extent there was a public interest since she initially was reported as a missing person. However, in the case of Vanja Nilsson and Kjell List I found no obvious public interest in revealing their identity, all though the fact that Hudiksvalls newspaper is a local newspaper, proved to be of importance in the matter.

Animal rights activists and animal welfare advocates are the two most vocal groups dedicated towards improving the lives of animals, however they often end up fighting with each other instead of working with together. They get caught up in the small details and forget that they are both working towards the same bigger picture: living in a world where animals and humans can cohabitate happily and healthily. Both groups use the media as a tool to grab headlines and generate controversy, which sheds light on animal rights issues. While its commendable that both groups are willing to go to many extremes to get their message to the public, they do so at the expense of properly educating the public. Animals rights issues become more about the spectacle than the animals, which ultimately ends up helping no one. I want to first analyse the arguments about captivity from both parties, and then delve into the tactics that they use to get their ideologies across. My goal was to create a short documentary that explores the depth of these issues, critique the role that the media plays through the lens of a specific animal: Billy the Elephant.

Denna studie har undersökt hur män som kommer från, och lever i, Norrbotten tycker att tv-serien Leif och Billy, som verkar under Sveriges Television, representerar maskulinitet och Norrbotten. För att ta reda på det har sju kvalitativa forskningsintervjuer gjorts, där intervjupersonerna är män i 20 till 50 årsåldern. Intervjupersonerna har tagit del av klipp och avsnitt från serien innan intervjutillfällena. Syftet med undersökningen har varit att ta reda på hur männen ser på maskuliniteten som serien representerar, om det förekommer stereotyper i representationen av Norrbotten samt om männen kan relatera serien till sina egna verklighet. Det med tv-serien som grund och utgångspunkt. Studien utgår från en kvalitativ undersökning som från teori om representation, intern orientalism samt maskulinitet analyseras. Analysen av respondenternas utsagor har resulterat i fyra stycken övergripande teman; norrbottniska stereotyper, landsbygden kontra det urbana, alfahannens känslor och verklighetsförankringen. Centralt i undersökningen är respondenternas upplevelse av att Leif och Billy porträtterar stereotyper i Norrbotten i form av bland annat deras intressen och ekonomiska situation. Studien visar även att respondenterna upplever att det finns en maskulinitet präglad av aggression och en strävan efter en roll som alfahanne hos karaktärerna.

Background: The ethnic subcultural consumer is a valuable segment in the multicultural societies of today, which has received little attention from both marketers and researchers. One of the most multicultural cities in Sweden is Malmoe, with 38% of its habitants having a foreign background. For IKEA Malmoe this segment has long been of interest, but have found it hard to increase their diversity among customers. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to help IKEA Malmoe get a greater understanding of the ethnic subcultural consumption behaviour, to attract a higher cultural diversity among customers. This research paper will explore why IKEA Malmoe is not reaching a greater cultural diversity of customers today, and offer insights to how they could work, through their local marketing, to attract this segment. Delimitation: This study will be delimited to the subject of ethnic subcultural consumption behaviour in the area of retail marketing. The research will focus on general consumption behaviour; how consumption is influenced by culture; both the originating culture and the hosting culture; and for the empirical investigation, how ethnic consumption is related to IKEA. Method: The research is a qualitative study with an deductive stance, based on the semi- structured interviews of 14 respondents from eight different subcultures of Malmoe. Result/ Conclusion: The findings of this research showed that it is essential not to see the ethnic subcultural consumer as one homogenous segment, as aspects such as acculturation, age, income and lifestyle were shown to have greater impact on consumption behaviour than national culture. This thesis reconstructs the landscape evolution of the Billy Big Spring site (24GL304, Glacier County, north-central Montana) from the last glacial maximum to present through the analysis of sediment and soil samples collected from a transect of auger tests that bisected the site and surrounding landforms. Interpretations were drawn from stratigraphy, pedologic data, sedimentologic analysis and radiocarbon dating. The site landscape came into being in the late-Pleistocene, after Wisconsin-age glaciers retreated. Glacial retreat left a meltdown depression on the land that filled with water to form a pond, which persisted through the early-Holocene. The onset of the mid-Holocene (Altithermal) occurred before ~8,415 cal. yrs. BP, when increasingly arid conditions caused the water level to drop. The first radiocarbon dated human occupation of this site occurred during the Altithermal, ~7,030 cal. yrs. BP, after the eruption of Mount Mazama (~7,633 cal. yrs. BP). Arid conditions continued until ~7,000 cal. yrs. BP, when pond water re-expanded across the basin, marking the transition to the cooler late-Holocene. Sometime before 2,100 cal. yrs. BP, dry conditions returned, and the extent of the pond water decreased again. Since this time, overland alluvial processes have deposited sediments in the basin. Many hypotheses on how the Altithermal impacted the people of the Northwestern Plains have been proposed since the 1950s, but little agreement has been reached. This is due to the fact that there was great variation in how the Altithermal expressed itself throughout the Northwestern Plains. The human reactions to this phenomena cannot be explained simplistically for the region as a whole. This study shows that the Billy Big Spring site experienced drying during the Altithermal, but despite this, people continued to occupy this site. This evidence adds to the argument that the Altithermal climate of the Northwestern Plains did not have severe enough impacts to impose much hardship on its occupants.

Sunset Boulevard (Crepúsculo dos Deuses, EUA) foi coescrito e dirigido pelo cineasta Billy Wilder (1906-2002), entrando em cartaz em 1950 período marcado pela ascensão do macarthismo nos Estados Unidos. Para burlar a censura imposta pelo Red Scare, o filme apresenta diversas possibilidades de interpretação, as quais serão perseguidas ao longo da análise. Dentre elas, observa-se o melodrama aos moldes hollywoodianos; um panorama da transição do cinema mudo ao sonoro (e suas implicações); um mapeamento das forças produtivas na indústria cinematográfica norte-americana; a proposta de uma organização de trabalho colaborativa (em oposição à hierárquica e alienada, estabelecida pelo fordismo); e a própria censura do Red Scare, que se faz presente por sua ausência. Duas formas de trabalho são apresentadas ao espectador (e ao protagonista) o trabalho alienado e o trabalho colaborativo e são utilizadas estratégias para expô-las e contrapô-las através da articulação de diversos recursos (como foco narrativo, instâncias narrativas, objetos cênicos etc.). Assim, é possível efetuar um mapeamento das opções que se desenham ao protagonista. Desta maneira, serão demonstradas não apenas quais possibilidades apresentadas foram adotadas (ou abandonadas) pelo protagonista e quais estratégias narrativas foram utilizadas para corroborá-las, mas também as implicações e consequências históricas de suas escolhas
Sunset Boulevard (USA) was co-written and directed by Billy Wilder (1906-2002), being released in 1950 a period well-known for the ascension of McCarthyism in the United States. In order to fool the censorship imposed by the Red Scare, the movie presents several layers of interpretation which will be pursued during the analysis. Among them, there is a typical Hollywood melodrama; a panorama of the silent film transition to the talkies (and its implications); a mapping of the labor force in the North-American cinematographic industry; the proposal of a collaborative work organization (in opposition to a hierarchic and alienated one, established by fordism); and the censorship imposed by the Red Scare itself, which appears through its absence. Two forms of work are presented to the spectator (and to the main character) the alienated work and the collaborative work and strategies are used in order to expose and counter them through the articulation of a plethora of devices (such as point of view, narrative instances, props etc.). Therefore, it is possible to map the options presented to the protagonist. Thus, not only which possibilities presented were adopted (or abandoned) by the main character and which narrative strategies were used to support them will be demonstrated, but also the implications and historical consequences of his choices

The United States Army activated the Aeronautical Division, United States Signal Corps, on August 1, 1907. The men of the Aeronautical Division faced hardships and challenges from the very beginning as they tried to build the nation’s first air force prior to World War I. The U.S. Army, the War Department, Congress, and even the American people, really did not know what aircraft could do beyond simple flight. American airmen tried to demonstrate what air power was capable of, but the response to their achievements never met their expectations. Using an abundance of primary and secondary sources on American air power, this dissertation demonstrates that airmen’s struggle for a separate service was not something that developed slowly over the course of decades. Instead, this dissertation shows that airmen wanted independence from the U.S. Army from the start. From their point of view, the U.S. Army, the War Department, and Congress never really appreciated or understood air power. As a result, airmen became more and more alienated with each passing year until they achieve want they wanted -- independence.

This study has the purpose of analyzing comparatively the play Sweet bird of youth, of 1959, by the playwright Tennessee Williams, and the movie Sunset Boulevard, of 1950, by the filmmaker Billy Wilder, focusing on the decadence, observing how this aspect was represented and what purpose it has in the text and in the film. In both study objects, there are characters who were famous movie stars in the past, but now are relegated to ostracism by Hollywood. There are male characters in the play and the movie who want, but cannot achieve fame in the American film industry and they establish a prostitution relationship with the actresses. These are people presented as decadent, narcissistic, materialistic and have tragic endings. Furthermore, there are other characters and aspects of the selected works that expose decadent facets of American society at the time, as the representation of religious conservatism in Sweet bird of youth and the working relationship in the film Sunset Boulevard. By analyzing the characters in the works and how they relate with each other and with the society which surrounds them, it is possible to verify a commentary done by the authors about the negative consequences of capitalism, of the film industry and of the conservatism in the American society.
O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar comparativamente a peça Doce pássaro da juventude, de 1959, do dramaturgo Tennessee Williams, e o filme Crepúsculo dos deuses, de 1950, do cineasta Billy Wilder, com foco na decadência, observando como este aspecto foi representado e qual função desempenha no texto dramático e no filme. Nos dois objetos de estudo figuram personagens atrizes que, no passado, foram famosas estrelas de cinema, mas que agora se encontram relegadas ao ostracismo por Hollywood. Há personagens masculinas na peça e no filme que desejam, mas não conseguem alcançar a fama na indústria cinematográfica americana e estabelecem uma relação de prostituição com as atrizes. São figuras apresentadas como decadentes, narcisistas, materialistas e que têm finais trágicos. Também há, além dessas, outras personagens e aspectos nas obras selecionadas que expõem facetas decadentes da sociedade americana da época, como a representação do conservadorismo religioso em Doce pássaro da juventude e das relações de trabalho no cinema em Crepúsculo dos deuses. Por meio das personagens nas obras e no modo como elas se relacionam entre si e com a sociedade que as cercam, é possível verificar uma análise feita pelos autores das consequências negativas do capitalismo, da indústria cinematográfica e do puritanismo da sociedade americana.

Il s'agit d'etudier le statut des objets dans le cinema narratif a partir de quelques films hollywoodiens tres connus. L'approche est celle d'un hedonisme spectatoriel convaincu que le plaisir du sens passe par un travail sur le sens. Le plan d'exposition separe deux niveaux d'existence des objets : la representation des objets par le cinema; ce que les objets filmiques signigient. Le premier tome (les objets profilmiques) decrit, a partir de souriau, la representation des objets selon les etapes suivantes : a) les effets speciaux et l'ecriture cinematographique; b) les objets referentiels comme materiau de depart qu'il est possible de classer ; c)les correspondances qui inscrivent ce materiau a l'interieur des reseaux avant leur entree dans un film; d) les migrations des objets : du referent au filmique (kane), des mots aux images (the maltese falcon) ; la reconstitution des decors (the birds). Le second tome passe en revue les principales "fonctions" signifiantes des objets degagees a partir d'une analyse des debuts de films d'hitchcock : a) analyse des trois principales fonctions diegetiques qui creent l'univers filmique : espace, temps, mise en place de personnages. B) fonctions narratives centrees sur le recit et l'intrigue, illustrees par l'exemple des objets de la communication dans les films d'hitchchock. C) fonctions symboliques des objets, c'est-a-dire du sens considere comme un surplus (lectures textuelles, aspects de l'interpretation, lectures thematiques et reveries)
In this study, the approach of the status of objects in narrative films made in hollywood is mainly hedonistic and centered on the spectator, but it pleads for the idea that the pleasure taken stems from a thorough study of meaning. The two parts of the thesis deal with : a) the way objects are made to appear on films; b) the meaning they assume. The first part (the profilmic) describes, after etienne souriau, the presence of objects on the screen : a) special effects and films as a "written" text; b) objects as a mental reference affording a basic material within a maze of correspondences; c) the migration of objects between their sources and films (examples : citizen kane, the maltese falcon, the birds). The second part analyses the main significant functions of objects a reading of the first minutes of some hithchock's films make quite clear : a) the three main diegetic functions which create the filmic world : space, time and character building; b) narrative and plot exemplified through a study of hitchcock's use of the objects of communication; c) meaning and the symbolism of objects (textual readings; interpretation; thematic readings; "reveries"). The general conclusion, after a survey of the objects used as metaphors of film, considers the ambiguous outcome of a hypermetropic vision afforded by film and tv as it is best seen through hitchcock's

Since there is very little scientific research about directing children and foremost about directingchildren in professional productions, like Stockholm stadsteater, was my purpose with this bacheloressay to find work methods that directors use when they work with child actors in professionalproductions. With this bachelor essay I wanted to give practitioners in the world of theater tools forhow to work with children in professional theater, as well as increase the interest for furtherresearch in this subject. To accomplish this purpose I have gathered material from the production of Billy Elliot at MalmöOpera, made observations of the same production at Stockholms stadsteater and interviewed thedirector of the production, Ronny Danielsson and director and children ambassador Suzanne Osten.The study is made from a perspective of the post modern child and also from a so called child perspective on the art of directing and working with children in theater. My conclusions from my studies are that when working as a director with child actors you need tothink about motivation and stimulating the children in their development, and support them in theirwork with analyzing the play, as well as give them tools to help them find their emotionalconnection. If the children loose their interest in acting the director need to be there to give thechildren new challenges. It is important to give positive feedback and use a language that thechildren understand and use body language and image work to clarify the directions as well asletting the children have some time for rest and play. This is only one example of how directors work with child actors in professional productions. Frommy interviews, observations and the previous research that I have studied, have I discovered thatdirectors sometimes are in agreement and sometimes not. To further answer my questions moreresearch into the director’s way of working with children would be needed. I therefor hope that Ithrough this essay have contributed with increasing the interest of further research into this subject.

This essay examines three of Herman Melville’s shorter fictions: Bartleby, Benito Cereno and Billy Budd. An analysis and comparison is made of the forces of power relations and resistance between the main characters in the three stories. Foucault’s theories of power are used as a basis for the analysis. Apparent power structures such as law and military hierarchy are analysed, but the focus is on more subtle relations based on language, knowledge, conformity with norms, silence, capitalism and position. It is argued that, apart from the apparent power structures, one needs to consider the more subtle power relations and acts of resistance for an understanding in the shifts of power positions. The study examines how the resisting oppressed party in each of the three works of fiction ends up dead, and that on a first reading resistance may seem futile. A further examination of the seemingly re-established conventional order, however, reveals shifts in power positions, shifts that indicate instability in the norms of society. It is argued that positions of power are to some extent reversed in the studied works of fiction, where the dominant party ends up suffering.

This dissertation considers American Protestant perceptions of U.S. foreign policy directed toward Soviet Union during the Dwight D. Eisenhower presidency (1953-1961). The question of what a culture dominated by Protestant denominations thought of its global adversary has not yet been sufficiently explored by scholars of either American religious history or diplomatic history. Most scholars who deal with the intersection of religion and foreign policy during the Eisenhower Administration tend to accentuate the close relationship that existed between government policy and general religious attitudes. That is to say, a general, widespread Protestant support of foreign policy objectives stands as the prevailing interpretation. Most historians conclude that America’s Protestant church leaders—preachers, pastors, and bishops—either actively supported government foreign policy objectives or sought to insert their own stances into existing policy. More recently, historians have published monographs that further explore Protestant Christianity with regard to foreign policy in the 1950s. By acknowledging the different strands of Protestant Christianity, scholars have raised significant questions that have heretofore gone unanswered. The primary question is the one that this dissertation seeks to answer—how widespread was American Protestant denunciation of communism and, simultaneously, how broad was American Protestant support for foreign policy objectives? Billy Graham, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Garfield Bromley Oxnam represent the three most prominent representatives of Protestant Christianity’s three major strands. These three acknowledged opinion makers that serve as the focus of this dissertation were not uniform in their perspectives of U.S. foreign policy, yet they all denounced communism and—to a degree—supported America’s efforts to combat the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence throughout the course of the Eisenhower Administration (1953-1961). This conclusion helps explain the tremendous perseverance of containment as a strategy by attributing its success, in part, to the large, Protestant body of supporters that continued to sustain and encourage Washington’s policies directed toward the Soviet Union.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur John Hedlund förhåller sig till det svenska samhället, hans s.k. ”teologi om världen”. Denna kommer att undersökas och analyseras med hjälp av tre frågor• Vilken är enligt Hedlund relationen mellan kristendomen och det moderna svenska samhället?• Hur ser Billy Graham på relationen mellan kristendomen och det amerikanska samhället?• Vilka likheter och skillnader finns i Hedlund och Graham när det gäller synen på kristendomen och samhället? Uppsatsen tar sitt avstamp år 1946. Utgångspunkten motiveras av att detta var ett viktigt brytningsår i Hedlunds verksamhet: han blev ”Nalenpastorn” med det svenska folket, och dessutom reste han detta år till USA för att studera de mötesserier som ”Youth for Christ” organiserade – dvs. den organisation som Graham då verkade för. Grahams Crusade i Los Angeles 1950 ses som det verkliga startskottet för hans karriär och redan senare samma år startade John Hedlund sin motsvarighet som han kallade för ”korståg”. Detta i kombination med både Sveriges och USA:s utveckling från efterkrigstiden och framåt gör tidpunkten till lämplig. Avgränsningen i slutet av denna uppsats sätts till de viktiga brytpunkter som både Sverige och USA kommer till mot slutet av 1980-talet. Jag menar att Sverige når en tydlig brytpunkt med Olof Palmes död 1986 medan det i det amerikanska fallet får bli kommunismens kollaps 1989.

A música, desde pelo menos meados do século XIX, cumpriu um importante papel para a organização simbólica da cidade de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, qual seja, ajudar a construir sua identidade, sua versão comunitária a ser consagrada. Nesse sentido, é sintomático observar que o rótulo histórico de “Cidade Maravilhosa” é, na verdade, trecho de uma marchinha carnavalesca, de autoria de André Filho (1934). Assim, esta dissertação de mestrado aborda uma continuidade desta tradição identitária, a partir de análises da fonte “Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro” (1954), autoria de Billy Blanco e Tom Jobim, no sentido de entendê-la no seu contexto e refletir sobre suas mensagens.
The music, since at least the mid-nineteenth century, has played an important role in the symbolic organization of the city of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, which is to help build its identity, its community version to be consecrated. In this sense, it is symptomatic to observe that the historical label of "Cidade Maravilhosa" is, in fact, an excerpt from a carnival music, by André Filho (1934). So, this master's thesis addresses a continuity of this identity tradition, based on the analysis of the source "Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro" (1954), written by Billy Blanco and Tom Jobim, in order to understand it in its context and to reflect on your messages.

This dissertation focuses on how rural world and the caipira are portrayed in Mauricio de Sousa's work. Through the analysis of the comics about the character named Chico Bento that are published in magazines, the work shows how the rural world is connected with the sense of the national , and how Chuck Billy's stories are characterized by the idea of conservation and by a prescriptive logic.

A presente disserta??o analisa como os discursos homof?bicos que circulam nos curr?culos dos filmes "Billy Elliot (Inglaterra, 2000)", "Carol (Reino Unido/Estados Unidos, 2015)", "C.R.A.Z.Y. - Loucos de Amor (Canad?, 2005)" e "Madame Sat?" (Brasil, 2002), demandam corpos normalizados em um padr?o heteronormativo e que efeitos t?m sobre as personagens. Tomo como metodologia a an?lise do discurso, de inspira??o foucaultiana. As an?lises ser?o realizadas por meio das falas, as cenas, dos sons, das imagens, nas coisas expl?citas e silenciadas. Bem como, os conceitos de curr?culo, g?nero, homofobia, heteronormatividade, norma, discurso, rela??es de saber-poder e processos de subjetiva??o e posi??es de sujeito foram eleitos como ferramentas te?rico-conceituais para essa pesquisa. Em termos te?ricos, esta disserta??o se inscreveu no campo dos Estudos Culturais, na vers?o dos estudos p?s-cr?ticos de curr?culo. Assim, o conceito central da investiga??o ? curr?culo, compreendendo-se que ele ensina modos de ser, pensar e agir ?s pessoas, bem como produz determinados tipos de sujeitos e corpos. Igualmente, o conceito de discurso tem espa?o importante, sendo entendido como "pr?ticas que formam sistematicamente os objetos de que falam" (FOUCAULT, 1986, p. 56). Destaco que o discurso da homofobia circula nos mais diversos espa?os produzindo efeitos sobre os corpos, demandando posi??es de sujeito, seja nos filmes, nas novelas, na escola, na fam?lia, na religi?o, na roda de amig@s. O problema central desta investiga??o ?: como os discursos sobre g?nero, por meio de discursos homof?bicos, t?m demandado corpos normalizados em um padr?o heteronormativo nos filmes em an?lise? Para isso, trago como objetivos espec?ficos: verificar os processos de constru??o de pr?ticas ditas femininas e masculinas nos filmes investigados; registrar quais marcas s?o nomeadas e classificadas como "normais" ?s posi??es de g?nero; identificar quais posi??es de sujeito generificados s?o demandadas e produzidas em atividades cotidianas nos filmes em quest?o; investigar como se expressam as desigualdades de g?nero nos longa-metragens pesquisados; analisar quais mecanismos, t?cnicas e estrat?gias de poder s?o utilizadas no refor?o ? homofobia nessas obras cinematogr?ficas; identificar e analisar poss?veis tentativas de apagamento de marcas homossexuais ou escapes nas personagens dos filmes. O argumento central ? de que h? uma reitera??o do padr?o heteronormativo no curr?culo dos filmes investigados mesmo quando se percebe uma suposta tentativa de romper com padr?es tidos como ideais e normais. Desse modo, soma-se ao discurso homof?bico e heteronormativo, por exemplo, discursos biologicistas, religiosos, psicol?gicos e moralistas, demandando posi??es de sujeito heterossexuais.

The present dissertation analyzes how the homophobic discourses circulating in the curricula of the films "Billy Elliot (England, 2000)", "Carol (United Kingdom / United States, 2015)", "C.R.A.Z.Y. - Madras de Amor (Canada, 2005)" and "Madame Sat? (Brazil, 2002)", demand normalized bodies in a heteronormative pattern and what effects they have on the characters. I take as a methodology the analysis of the discourse, inspired by Foucauld. The analyzes will be carried out through the speeches, the scenes, the sounds, the images, the explicit and silenced things. As well as some concepts ? curriculum, gender, homophobia, heteronormativity, norm, discourse, knowledge-power relations and subjectivation processes and subject positions ? were chosen as theoretical-conceptual tools for this research. In theoretical terms, this dissertation was inscribed in the field of Cultural Studies, in the version of post-critical curriculum studies. Thus, the central concept of research is curriculum, it is understood that it teaches ways of being, thinking and acting to people, as well as producing certain types of subjects and bodies. Likewise, the concept of discourse has important space, being understood as "practices that systematically form the objects of which they speak" (Foucault 1986: 56). I emphasize that the discourse of homophobia circulates in the most diverse spaces producing effects on the bodies, demanding positions of subject, be it in the movies, novels, school, family, religion, the wheel of friends. The central problem of this research is: how have gender discourses, through homophobic discourses, demanded normalized bodies in a heteronormative pattern in the films under analysis? For that, I have as specific objectives: to verify the processes of construction of so-called feminine and masculine practices in the investigated films; Register which brands are named and classified as "normal" to gender positions; Identify which generalized subject positions are demanded and produced in daily activities in the films in question; To investigate how gender inequalities are expressed in the studied films; To analyze which mechanisms, techniques and strategies of power are used to reinforce homophobia in these cinematographic works; Identify and analyze possible attempts to erase homosexual marks or escapes in the characters of the films. The central argument is that there is a reiteration of the heteronormative pattern in the curriculum of the investigated films even when one perceives an alleged attempt to break with patterns considered as ideal and normal. In this way, it adds up to the homophobic and heteronormative discourse, for example, biological, religious, psychological and moral discourses, demanding heterosexual subject positions.
