Résumé :
ITC/USA 2012 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Eighth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2012 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California
In preparation for the onslaught of the commercial wireless appetite, we, the test community, must continually invest in methods to better utilize the Department of Defense (DoD) Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum allocations and or leverage the shared commercial space. There is an ever increasing demand for the limited physical allocations within the RF spectrum for wireless communications. This has never been more prevalent within the test community as it is today with the continuing encroachment of the commercial wireless communication systems. These commercial entities are investing billions of dollars to insure that the bandwidth demands of the public are met which in turn will affect the DoD allocations and usage. Based on the need for increasing data rates, number of simultaneous tests, number of test participants and competition from the commercial sector, the test community must continually improve our efficiency of use within the wireless communications space. To accomplish this, the Test Resource Management Center (TRMC) has identified a Test Technology Area (TTA) Spectrum Efficient Technology (SET) that targets methodologies to more efficiently and effectively utilize this wireless test asset. The SET team has broken down the problem space into three distinct domains; wireless technologies, telemetry networking, and spectrum management. The idea therein is to maximize efficiency within the legacy use of the RF spectrum, while improving the utilization of this constrained resource with technology investment. Much of this work requires leveraging commercial technologies/trends and applying these technologies to the dynamic test environment problem space.

Résumé :

Nanotechnology plays an important role in today’s society because it allows convergence to the nanoscale, that is to say to the level of atoms and molecules, as part of a miniaturization trend; and also because it is being used for improving human performance or enhancement. Nanotechnology will have a tremendous impact thanks to its potentialities, and the human desire for enhancement - and for some even the desire to reach a posthuman stage. Since nanotechnology-based human applications – cyborgs and implants – might represent a threat to what defines us as humans, namely our human nature, a different approach on the distinction between therapy and enhancement is needed in order to handle those applications in a wiser and more responsible way. This thesis will work on such approach.

Résumé :
The two time-honoured tasks of universities are teaching and research which have long provided society with specific skills and new knowledge and ideas. Expectations have increased exponentially and demands are originating from a much wider range of stakeholders. Universities are now given progressively more important roles in economic expansion, social development, better forms of political organization and governance, plus providing education for more students, and developing and transferring technology to industry. The capacity of universities to respond is insufficient, in both the developed and developing worlds. New models to guide the evolution of universities include the triple helix, the creation of entrepreneurial or specialized universities, large-scale excellence-driven environments or the concept of developmental universities. Most of these ultimately suggest that the universities move towards technology-oriented third missions, thus a closer interaction with enterprises. This special issue of Science and Public Policy explores such issues in 12 countries.

Résumé :
Gamification is now a household word, but it remains at the top of the lists of emerging technology and expected trends for the future of instructional design. If this is true, how can we take gamification to a level beyond badges and points? This paper argues that narrative is a key element that has not yet been fully realized in gamification, reviewed through its prior successes in entertainment-education, game-based learning, project-based learning, and digital storytelling. It suggests that Alternate Reality Games may be the true future of gamification as we know it today.

Résumé :
The primary goals of the thesis study were to evaluate the Closed Subscriber Group (CSG) based Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) deployments and identify the impact of CSG LPN cells on various system performance metrics (cell throughput, UE throughput and interference levels etc.) in contrast to the case when Open Access (OA) LPN cells are deployed in the macro cell area. Moreover, we aimed to analyze the system performance (metrics) in the presence of Inter-cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) techniques based on Time Domain Resource Partitioning (TDRP) and Frequency Domain Resource Partitioning (FDRP). As part of the initial objectives, we aimed to characterize the new interference scenarios consequent from the presence of CSG cells and contrast the performance of the system with the case when we have Open Access (OA) LPNs in the system. Furthermore, we simulated cases where the User Equipment (UEs) had the capability to perform Cell-specific Reference Signal Interference Cancellation (CRS-IC) in contrast to the studies where the UEs were not capable of performing CRS-IC. The simulations were performed in a heavily loaded traffic scenario (15Mbps & 10 LPNs per macro cell area) with 20% of the total users clustered around CSG LPNs. It was observed that in the presence of UEs capable of performing CRS-IC, incorporation of the CSG cells brings about 20% increase in the overall macro cell area T.P for DL and about 47% increase in the same for UL. Furthermore, the system capacity (i.e. the no. of UEs supported) was also seen to increase (17% for DL and 15% for UL respectively). However for the same scenario, when the system contained UEs not capable of performing CRS-IC, CSG cells tend to degrade the system capacity (10% degradation), followed by 18% decrease in the overall macro cell area throughput in DL. This is mainly due to high interference (due to CRS transmission) experienced by the un-authorized macro UEs in the DL. With regard to the case when ICIC techniques are employed in the system, we simulate the Almost Blank Sub-frame (ABS) technique with CSG LPN cells muting their transmission in alternate sub-frames and contrast it to the FDRP scenario where the transmission from the LPN cells is limited to 50% of the total bandwidth (with no muting employed). In general it was observed that, in a macro-femto deployment with CSG cells, ICIC techniques do not improve the performance of macro UEs considerably, when compared to the scenario without ICIC schemes in the system (even for the case when there is high UE clustering in the CSG LPNs - 60% UE clustering). However, when TDRP and FDRP ICIC schemes are contrasted with each other, it was observed that the FDRP scheme slightly outperforms the TDRP scheme by providing 12% gain in macro UE T.P in DL, primarily due to the fact that no CRS are transmitted in the part of the bandwidth not used by CSG LPNs.

Napier, Gayla S. « Beyond community| Understanding the experience of communitas among Information Technology Road Warriors ». Thesis, Fielding Graduate University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10244284.

Résumé :

Community, or the sense of being connected to others, represents an enduring conversation throughout organizational literature. Communitas , on the other hand, has not been well researched in this context. Communitas refers to an unstructured community in which people have a sense of sharing and intimacy that develops among persons who experience liminality as a group. Building on the anthropological work of Arnold van Gennep, Victor Turner, and Edith Turner, this study explores the experience of communitas among Information Technology Road Warriors , those consulting professionals that spend much of their work life away from home and within the liminal environment of their project-based work. It also elucidates the supporting nature of strong social relationships among Road Warriors. The study employs a qualitative approach and draws on in-depth interviews of 21 Road Warriors from five professional services firms. Findings were captured in an integrative model of communitas, that includes both structural and behavioral elements that together represent the symbolic construction of communitas as experienced by the participants. The data indicate that participants sharing this liminal space enjoy a particular sense of community that allows what might be seen as a disparate group to find a sense of belonging and communitas. Practical implications for professional services firms, managers, employees, and organizations that employ liminal work groups are presented, along with recommendations for future research.

Al-slaity, Ala'a Nasir. « Beyond Recommendation Accuracy : A Human-Like Recommender System ». Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41881.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Since the emergence of Recommender Systems (RS), most of the research has focused on improving the capability of a recommender system to predict and provide an accurate recommendation. However, the literature has demonstrated increasing evidence that providing accurate recommendations is not sufficient to increase users’ acceptance of the provided recommendations. Hence, it is vital for a recommender system to focus not only on the accuracy of the provided recommendations but also on other factors that influence the acceptance of recommendations and the extent to which these recommendations are convincing or persuasive. Consequently, there becomes a need for new research paradigms to help improve the capabilities of recommender systems, which goes beyond the recommendation accuracy. One of the recently emerged research directions that consider this need fosters the idea of adopting human-related theories from the social sciences domain, such as persuasiveness of social communication. In this context, however, a challenging, non-trivial, and not fully explored issue that arises is: how to integrate human-related theories into a recommender system to be one of its intrinsic characteristics in order to improve its performance beyond its accuracy? This thesis aims to address the above issue from two angles: first, it investigates improving recommender systems by increasing users’ acceptance of the recommendations. To achieve this, the influence of persuasion principles on users of recommender systems is investigated. Then a reference architecture framework to adapt and integrate persuasion features as a substantial characteristic of recommender systems is proposed. The proposed framework, named Personalized Persuasive RS (PerPer), adopts concepts from the social sciences literature, namely personality traits and persuasion principles. In addition, PerPer adapts machine learning concepts, in particular, the Learning Automata, to support its learning capabilities. Second, the thesis discusses evaluating recommender systems beyond their accuracy. Particularly, it proposes two evaluation approaches that aim to evaluate recommender systems in a comprehensive way that goes beyond evaluating accuracy only. The first evaluation approach is called the Comprehensive Performance evaluation (ComPer). It adopts concepts from the human learning domain and provides a simple, thorough, and setting-independent evaluation approach for recommenders. The essence of ComPer is to consider a recommender system as a human being, and hence the former’s outcomes (i.e., recommendations) can be evaluated and validated in a way similar to how humans’ learning outcomes are evaluated. The second evaluation approach adopts goal-oriented modeling to provide an evaluation that does not only assess recommenders beyond their accuracy but also considers the multi-stakeholders of RSs. We demonstrate, empirically, and by user studies, the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed approaches. The contributions of the thesis are: (1) A characterization of recommender systems as systems supported with human traits and features, which goes beyond the conventional recommender systems known in the literature. (2) A user study that examines the impact of persuasive principles on users of recommender systems. (3) A Personalized Persuasive RS (PerPer) reference architecture framework to enrich recommender systems with persuasion capabilities that are personalized and adaptive for different users. (4) A mapping between human’s cognitive skills and the recommendation process. (5) The Comprehensive Performance evaluation (ComPer) framework to provide a comprehensive assessment of recommender systems considering multiple evaluation dimensions other than accuracy. And (6) a goal-oriented evaluation approach to assess the impact of multiple alternatives for recommendation approaches on the satisfaction of RSs stakeholders’ goals.

Scientists in the late 1950s in the United States gained technological capabilities to test for signs of extraterrestrial life. While exobiologists developed visual techniques to detect whether sites beyond Earth might harbor microbes, "biosignatures," radio astronomers searched for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) in the form of "technosignatures." This dissertation explores how scientists since the Space Age have constructed experimental assemblages to imagine, relate to, and investigate the alien and exotic microbes -- unknown, indeed, as-yet-imperceptible, objects --
through familiar sensory metaphors of seeing (exobiologists) and listening (SETI scientists). From historical material gathered at various D.C. archives, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Library of Medicine, I show how exobiologists' technologies of vision rendered anew images of the Moon, Mars, Venus, and the Earth from afar and at surface, affording scientists the ability to conceptually anticipate relationships between their world and others. Through a epistemic pratice I call "gaze-scaling," they yoked the concept of "island" to "planet," casting extraterrestrial sites as fragile laboratories of life that beckoned exploration. I next draw from immersive participant observation since 2016 to engage ethnographic sonar on the SETI group Breakthrough Listen based at U.C. Berkeley, California. I analyze how they construct criteria of intelligence through "experiments of anticipation" that are parametrized to hear from a commensurable subject.
I theorize "figures of listening" in both observational protocols and as a preemptive attunement to Other intention, acts that configure an alien who would be not just perceptible, but relatable. If exobiologists envisioned universal standards of biochemistry that would map life's common origins, SETI astronomers have traded on imagined superhuman characteristics of the alien -- more benevolent, wiser, and technologically superior -- to suggest human futures. I outline how the alien has been imagined through three potent analogical figures: as artifacts, animals, and angels. Furnished by feminist epistemologies and queer theories of care around multispecies becomings -- traditions that have persistently challenged ontological stability across species, gender, race, and spacetime --
I theorize those analogies as acts of "reflexive alienation": a mode of worldmaking in which scientists imagine Others imagining them. Future-oriented extraterrestrial objects held in abeyance cultivate Earthly concepts of being..

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The limitations of the conventional Cu/low-k interconnect technology for use in future ultra-scaled integrated circuits down to 7 nm in the year 2020 are investigated from the power/performance point of view. Compact models are used to demonstrate the impacts of various interconnect process parameters, for instance, the interconnect barrier/liner bilayer thickness and aspect ratio, on the design and optimization of a multilevel interconnect network. A framework to perform a sensitivity analysis for the circuit behavior to interconnect process parameters is created for future FinFET CMOS technology nodes. Multiple predictive cell libraries down to the 7‒nm technology node are constructed to enable early investigation of the electronic chip performance using commercial electronic design automation (EDA) tools with real chip information. Findings indicated new opportunities that arise for emerging novel interconnect technologies from the materials and process perspectives. These opportunities are evaluated based on potential benefits that are quantified with rigorous circuit-level simulations and requirements for key parameters are underlined. The impacts of various emerging interconnect technologies on the performances of emerging devices are analyzed to quantify the realistic circuit- and system-level benefits that these new switches can offer.

Résumé :
In recent years, the necessity and opportunity for transforming pulp and paper mills into integrative units for large-scale output of biochemicals, biomaterials, and biofuels have come up in discussions of industrial renewal in the Northern hemisphere (mainly in Canada, Sweden and Finland). This transformation is related to technology shifts as well as changing business models based on new bioproducts due to profoundly new market conditions. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how wood-based biomass industries – with an emphasis on incumbent pulp and paper industries (PPIs) – are managing this industrial and technological transformation that is taking place beyond the papermaking paradigm. Innovation theories on mature industries, their incumbents, and their propensity for technological lock-in and inertia are well-known. How new entrants and incumbents manage these large shifts is seen as central in understanding the dynamics of new, large-scale sustainable technologies on the one hand and the renewal of large, mature process industries on the other. Three research questions are addressed. First, where are the knowledge and technology frontiers developing in this transformation? Second, how are incumbents of PPIs are managing large market and technology shifts based on existing capabilities and knowledge bases? Third, what are the key mechanisms behind the transformation of PPIs from a process-industry perspective? The hermeneutical insights into the system of biomass technologies in general and the PPI industries in particular were gained by using a qualitative case-study approach, which formed the basis for four research articles and for outlining the empirical context and key words search of the quantitative bibliometric methods in a fifth research article. The research findings and main contributions address an identification of the, analytical, “formal”, science-based technology frontiers from a knowledge base perspective.  Old industrialised forest/PPI nations tended to specialize in rather slow growing, forest-based frontiers. They seem to have stayed close to the research trajectories of their woody raw material and knowledge base with the exception of North America. However, this not the entire explanation of transformation and technology development. Chemical pulp mills, in several cases developed into biorefineries, are the nexus of the emerging development block. They are contributing with products in a bioeconomy that is actively moving away from fossils and polluting materials (such as cement, cotton, plastics). In addition, demo plants (potentially nurturing hundreds of bioproducts) that are present at mill sites and involve different stakeholders, can act as the interface between analytical and synthetic knowledge bases that otherwise are difficult to combine in the upscaling phases of process industries. The response of PPI organizations to shifts in both technology and business models is also explained by the concept of diverging innovations of non-assembled products. These are part of a diversification of an industry from a forest industry perspective, and also of a diversification that may enter trajectories of several by-products and side-streams of the pulp “biorefinery” mill, and have analogies to a product-tree and to the material transformation flow of its production systems. But it is also a phenomenon of synergies in a broader multi-sectorial perspective, i.e. new sets of related products/processes that are able to replace industries of non-assembled products under the above-mentioned, new market conditions. The phenomenon of diverging innovations can be regarded as both an empirical contribution – the breaking up of a closed integrated process industry into something new with several emerging and integrative industries as a response to the large shifts in papermaking and sustainable needs in society – and as a theoretical remark on the model for non-assembled products presented by Utterback (1994).

Healthcare demands staff working around-the-clock for their patients. Healthcare staff is increasingly dependent on technology for performing their profession in the most adequate way possible. However, technology fails occasionally, and thus requires service. As medicine is increasingly dependent on technical device, there is also an increasing need for support beyond office hours. The current service-level agreements at Philips imaging systems and patient monitoring systems include service during office hours. In this project, the need of expanding the hours, in which support is offered, is investigated. The project is carried out through interviews with medical technicians and users of the medical device. The respondents include technicians and clinicians working with medical imaging and patient monitoring, respectively. The aim is to map the need for off-hour support, e.g. support during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. The results show that there is a need for off-hour support. However, the need differs depending on the receiver of the support.

Résumé :
'Pipeline shrinkage', the steady attrition of women in the ICT industry despite their academic achievement, has been of great concern not only in the United Kingdom but also internationally for almost a quarter of a century. This study reviewed literature and prior research from both national and international perspectives, with a particular research focus on the experiences of students in three British secondary schools. The situation may have been exacerbated in British schools as government strategies have increasingly focussed on male students' apparent 'underachievement' relative to female students. One aspect of focus has been the resurrection of interest in single-sex classes in state schools. The comparatively strong academic achievement of female students has led to little focussed research on why they fail to capitalise on their ICT ability and study the subject beyond school level. Their behavioural intentions have not been the focus of the research. This study tested the fit of The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TpB) as a theoretical framework to examine how behavioural, normative and control beliefs differed, both between male and female students in mixed and single gender schools and female students taught in mixed or single sex classroom contexts. Samples of 150 students were questioned from which 120 were useable; 40 from each of the three participating schools. In two cases 25 students were Key Stage 4 students and 15 were A-Level students. A series of semi-structured interviews were undertaken with a further sample of 30 Key Stage 4 ICT students. Results showed data fitted the TpB model and explained female students' lack of intention to study ICT beyond their current level as beliefs were found to be related to that intention. Recommendations were provided for changes in practice based on attitudinal responses to behavioural beliefs, learning styles and teaching strategies.

This dissertation examines the history of shark-human interactions in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It argues that the mid-twentieth century onward saw a series of conjunctures -technological, cultural, and scientific -that thrust sharks and humans into unprecedented levels of contact. This led to both a rise in preoccupation with sharks, and an emergence of new stakeholder groups that sought produce knowledge about them. The conflicting definitions, attitudes, and responses to sharks presented by these various groups are linked to greater trends in science, culture, and society. In particular, the way humans write and think about sharks and other man-eating predators has deep links to the position we see ourselves occupying in the environment. Further, anxieties about sharks are strongly tied to the complicated cultural relationships that people have with the marine environment, both as a place of wonder and terror. Lastly, sharks also allow us to examine the technologies we use to tame and navigate the ocean, as the shifts that brought humans and sharks into closer proximity were intertwined with new technologies that changed the ways humans interacted with marine spaces. Each chapter presents case studies from the United States and South Africa, juxtaposing the responses by each region. The opening chapter charts the rise of shark attack numbers in the mid-century. It traces the impact of highly publicized shark attacks in the U.S. and South Africa in the 1950s, which resulted in differing approaches to combat the threat of shark attack. Chapter Two explores the intersections between popular depictions of sharks and changing perceptions of shark behavior, centering on the ur-text of shark literature: Jaws. Chapter Three traces the advent of shark tourism, and examines the controversy surrounding white shark cage diving in South Africa. Chapter Four explores the response of Cape Cod communities to an influx of white sharks into the region, drawing parallels with earlier historical examples of predator eradication and conservation. The dissertation thus argues that studying shark-human interactions allows for the interrogation of divisions between myth and science, experts and laypersons, popular culture and scientific knowledge, humans and the environment.

Dunn, Hamish. « Democratising fundoscopy : Using novel technology and education to make the ocular fundus accessible beyond ophthalmology ». Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2022. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/29364.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Fundoscopy is an invaluable clinical examination, offering a direct view of the neurovascular system, yet it remains rarely and poorly performed by non-eye health practitioners. The technical challenges of viewing the fundus with the traditional ophthalmoscope mean that critical information is overlooked in current practice, to the detriment of patients. This thesis explores whether fundoscopy by non-eye health experts can be improved using novel technologies and optimised education. Part 1 reviews the historical context and existing literature on fundoscopy. Part 2 describes three studies focussed on fundoscopy use and education across a spectrum of medical training. Smartphone fundoscopy was demonstrated to improve the ease of use, usability and diagnostic accuracy of fundoscopy for medical students. Additionally, e-learning modestly improved fundus interpretation. Part 3 describes four studies in which portable, digital fundoscopy tools and screening protocols were implemented in Emergency Departments in metropolitan and regional NSW, tertiary-hospital diabetic clinics, and amongst neurology inpatients. Clinically important prevalences of otherwise-missed, blinding and life-threatening pathology were detected in all settings. The detection of pathology and normalcy was enhanced, resulting in significant improvements in patient outcomes across a spectrum of medical contexts. Specialist telemedicine diagnostic support was required for optimal diagnostic accuracy. In conclusion, the ocular fundus has always held a wealth of clinical findings with implications outside ophthalmology, and the proliferation of novel fundus-imaging technologies, alongside better-targeted education, promises to unlock the clinical riches of a non-invasive view of the neurovascular system. This thesis helps to quantify the current and potential future value of fundoscopy; direct efforts to democratise fundoscopy, and; better integrate it into clinical practice beyond the ophthalmic clinic.

Résumé :
This dissertation analyzes the ways in which the new mode of industrial organization associating mass production with mass consumption in the early twentieth century--what we call Fordism--had profound cultural repercussions on urban spatial practices. I address Fordism as a mode of socialization that deployed industrial techniques to reconstitute the very nature of social relations. This attempt at broad socialization through technological means reflected a type of technical thought coalescing in the industrial practices of the early twentieth century that both brought spatial practices into its service and radically altered existing social relations. As such, Fordist ideas formulated to address efficiency in industrial production extended to the city, its architecture, and its inhabitants, construing them as technological artifacts subject to the same economies of scope and scale, and requirements of production and consumption as the manufacture of automobiles, demonstrating that Fordist modes of production permeated not just manufacturing processes but also the organization of management structures, the architectural layout of factories and offices, the social spaces of the city, and popular conceptions of individuality, subjectivity, and the body.

The efficiencies of single-junction solar cells have been rapidly increasing and approaching their fundamental Shockley-Queisser efficiency limits. This is true for mature commercial technologies such as silicon and cadmium telluride. In order to enable solar cells with higher efficiency limits, new concepts need to be implemented which overcome the fundamental energy conversion mechanism limitations of single-junction solar cells. For this approach to be successful, it is advantageous to leverage existing manufacturing facilities and integrate these new solar cell architectures into commercially successful solar cell technologies such as silicon and cadmium telluride. In this thesis, two novel solar cell concepts are explored, categorized into three contributions. First, the application of intermediate band concept on silicon solar cells is explored by hyperdoping silicon, demonstrating room-temperature sub-band gap optoelectronic response from the material, and evaluating the feasibility of the intermediate band approach for improving silicon solar cell efficiency. Second, perovskite solar cells are integrated onto silicon solar cells to demonstrate mechanically-stacked perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell using low-cost silicon cell and monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell enabled by a silicon tunnel junction. Third, an analytic model is built to rapidly investigate the energy yield of different tandem solar cell architectures. When applied to cadmium telluride-based tandem solar cells, this model will help thin-film companies like First Solar narrow down the scope of future research and development programs on tandem solar cells.

Résumé :

Clean modern energy and improved waste management are two well-recognised challenges in the global transition to sustainable development. There exist synergistic opportunities in simultaneously tackling the two issues via the generation of bioenergy from suitable waste streams. This potential has been successfully exploited elsewhere in the world; however, South Africa, despite having significant potential, lags behind in the implementation of these technologies and the respective conditions to use them. To understand slowly evolving technology trajectories and how to facilitate the pace of implementation, sustainability transition approaches such as the Technology Innovation System (TIS) framework have been found to be useful. The aim of this thesis is to explore the utility of a TIS approach to investigate how the potential of waste-based bioenergy in South Africa can be unlocked to recover energy from waste using anaerobic digestion technology (EfWviaAD). Going beyond previous TIS studies, this thesis also aims to experiment with aspects of the TIS approach, so as to observe steps towards implementation. Key to the TIS approach is the notion of critical activities and processes around an emerging technology called system functions. Seven of these system functions detailed in Chapter 2 are proposed. These include knowledge development and diffusion, market forming activities, mobilisation of resources etc.

Résumé :
In this dissertation, I present the findings from a qualitative case study of the digital literacy integration of a teacher and the digital literacy practices of three students with literacy-related learning difficulties within her classroom. As a researcher, I was interested in the ways students with literacy- related learning difficulties navigated digital tools in a technology-infused environment created by a teacher who has experience using digital tools for instructional and student-learning purposes. My research was guided by the following questions: (1) What was the context, content, and structure of the teacher’s technology instruction? (2) In what ways did the students use technological tools? (3) How did students with reading difficulties compose during digital literacy events? The data for this case study included classroom observations, interviews, field notes, work samples, and lesson plans. Through the use of both inductive (Phase I and II) and a priori (Phase III) analysis, the data highlight several important findings to inform the research questions: (a) Knowledge of Technology Does Not Ensure Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (b) Students with Reading Difficulties Still Have Difficulty with Reading Despite Technology Integration and (c) Change in Writing Tool (technology) does not Guarantee Change in Writing Performance.

Silva, Vieira Abel. « Residential Hot Water Services in Australia : Thinking Beyond Technology Selection to Enhance Energy Efficiency and Level of Service ». Thesis, Griffith University, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/384916.

Résumé :
By assessing the water lifecycle from an energy perspective, it becomes clear that domestic water heating systems play a considerable role in the urban water-energy nexus. However, the paucity of studies enhancing current understanding about how significant this contribution is may prove to be an impediment for the development of feasible initiatives when developing sustainable plans for water and energy resources concomitantly. The attainment of a clear understanding of the performance of Solar Water Heaters (SWHs) and Air Source Heat Pump Water Heaters (ASHPWHs) under different operational conditions is essential for decision-making, which requires accurate estimations of electricity savings potential and associated level of service. Therefore, reliable tools to predict the performance of renewable energy and energy efficient water heaters are required in order to prevent the installation of either oversized or undersized systems in residential buildings, which may lead to unintended outcomes for carbon policies. This issue is particularly relevant in Australia, where energy efficiency policies for the residential sector must take into account a vast number of climatic conditions due to the continental size of the country. This doctoral research study addresses the aforementioned knowledge gap. The overarching study aim was to investigate the performance of renewable energy and energy efficient water heating initiatives considering technical aspects (i.e. influence of technical specifications, site-specific conditions and user behaviour) and strategic considerations (i.e. key principles for decision-making). This aim was achieved by addressing the following four core study objectives: (1) to analyse the performance of residential water heating systems for different electricity supply tariffs, hot water tank sizes, and end-uses considering energy performance and service level indicators; (2) to identify key performance parameters for ASHPWHs in residential buildings by using a multi-parametric sensitivity analysis through theoretical models calibrated with empirical measurements; (3) to identify key performance parameters for SWHs in residential buildings by using a multi-parametric sensitivity analysis through theoretical models calibrated with empirical measurements; and (4) to develop an overarching Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Investment Decision Analysis (REEEIDA) framework based on a comprehensive literature review, and the application of the REEEIDA framework for water heating systems. A novel set of methodology underpinned by three measurement instruments was developed as part of the PhD research project. The first instrument (i.e. data generation) encompassed empirical analyses (laboratory experiment) and theoretical analyses (computational models). The second instrument (i.e. scenarios) was used to determine representative domestic hot water service patterns taking into consideration different site-specific conditions (e.g. weather conditions, electricity tariffs, cold water temperature, hot water temperature set-point for end-uses, etc.) and water heater types and configurations (e.g. ASHPWHs and SWHs). The third instrument (i.e. indicators) was used to evaluate water heaters considering aspects related to the water-energy nexus (i.e. energy intensity, and peak-hour and total power demand from electricity grids) and the level of service (i.e. compliance levels with minimum temperature thresholds for Legionella spp. control in hot water tanks and temperature requirements at end-use points). Three predominant analytical methods were used in the study, namely: multi-criteria analysis to achieve Objective 1; sensitivity analysis to achieve Objectives 2 and 3; and REEEIDA framework to achieve Objective 4. The methods and findings related to the four objectives are provided in four aligned journal papers included as chapters in this thesis (i.e. Chapters 4 to 7). Objective 1 findings revealed that SWHs appeared less prone to Legionella outbreaks, and water efficient front load washing machines are likely to cause an increase in the energy intensity of hot water supply services. For Objective 2, it was found that the coefficient of performance and the hot water storage tank capacity are the factors that most influence the energy consumption of ASHPWHs across different cities in Australia. Objective 3 findings indicate that the dust accumulation level on collectors is a key site-specific parameter for the energy performance and level of service of SWHs, outplaying several technical specification parameters (e.g. solar collector area and efficiency). The key findings of Objective 4 show that the optimisation of investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency can lead to a 48% reduction in the required funds for carbon mitigation targets. The overall PhD research project finding demonstrates the importance of comprehensive multi-parametric analyses to achieve energy efficiency and level of service requirements for residential hot water services.

Résumé :
This thesis is an ethnographic study of rights restitution as an arrangement that establishes boundaries, and how those boundaries are translated, challenged, and exceeded. Following the guidelines of International Humanitarian Law and its version contained in the Law of Victims and Land Restitution (1448/2011), the Colombian government established a wide network of professionals in charge of registration and reparation for claimants registered as victims of the armed conflict (7,999,963 people in April 2016). In these procedures of recognition and reparation, technologies like forms and protocols become crucial for the mediation of rights restitution. As a starting point, I trace the trajectories of technologies of recognition and reparation across assistance centres, governmental offices and sessions of psychosocial assistance. I am interested in functionaries and applicants’ experiences of forms and protocols, the procedures of recognition and reparation, and the circulation of official numbers as narratives of rights restitution. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies, a central concern of this thesis is to ask what technologies of recognition and reparation assemble. I interrogate the translation of experiences of pain and mobility into numbers and the circulation of those numbers by state representatives. I also explore some of the material forms of organisation developed by registered and unregistered interlocutors, as arrangements beyond the boundaries of state interventions. I describe how some of those alternative orders translate state interventions and enact spaces of material justice. Instead of reproducing the notion of reparation as a cornerstone of rights restitution in transitional justice societies, I suggest that a different sort of Reparation might occur beyond the boundaries of post-conflict statehood and within its intersections with alternative arrangements.

Résumé :
Today's rapid technological development in relation with social networks create efficient information flows in everyday life. It creates conditions for so-called "hypes" that are described as an exponentially growing trend of testing a new product. What factors lies behind a hype and how does it affect people that choose to refrain from new technology?   The purpose of this paper is to study the so called non-users, with a case study that concerns the Pokémon GO game and its hype in the summer of 2016. This case study has the intention to highlight the positive and negative aspects of non-users and other thoughts about hype. The study also intends to investigate what the non-users can contribute in technological development and if it's possible to distinguish between users and non-users in today's society.   The case study has been carried out on the basis of two group interviews; a group that abstained from playing and a group that played Pokémon GO during the hype. A number of issues are discussed and linked against a theoretical framework which also has been used in the analysis in this paper. Based on the results of the case study it appears that nostalgia was a major factor in the hype, many had prior knowledge of the concept and was triggered by it. Nostalgia was also a factor that lead people to refrain from the hype. The game did not meet up to everyone’s expectations regarding the functionality which existed earlier in Pokémon but not now.  It also emerged that the social environment affects both users and non-users in several ways. The investigation of the case study showed that non-users often had to wait for players due to different reasons. This could be while on walks with the player or that users could completely block roads. To be able completely separating non-users and users is complex as the real world is used as the platform of the game. Both previous studies and this paper demonstrates how important it can be to understand non-users. They have the opportunity to present an overall perspective of a product that users might condone. In summary, the future will become more complex in the area, especially with new technologies that make the real world a game field.

Résumé :
To be able to protect an organisation's resources, it is important to understand what there is to protect and what to protect it from. The first step is to try to analyse the security threats that exist against an organisation's resources to explore the risks. Threats have to be identified, for the organisation to protect its resources and find where the optimal placement against threats is. This thesis analysis whether it is possible to obtain a Threat Tree Analysis that is useful for developing an information security policy for the municipality in Ronneby, using the SS 62 77 99-1 standard. A co-operation between the technical solutions and the administrative security is necessary to achieve information security, together with ordinary common sense. True, each of these can help improve security, but none of them is a complete solution. Security is not a product - it is a process. Threat trees form the basis of understanding that process. In this thesis, we have been using a qualitative method. The analysis method is a case study at the Social Department, at the municipality in Ronneby. Through interviews it has come us to hand, that the organisation has not established an information security policy which should give the code of practice for how the work of information security will pursue within the organisation. The organisation does neither use a model for structuring threats nor a method for collecting threats against information today. Through the structure of possible threats, the personnel generates an understanding of the organisation and takes active part finding adequate threats within the Social Department. As users understand the importance of security, how to use it, and where to report suspected violations, they can do a great deal to reduce the risk to loose information. Important to remember is that the education is an ongoing process, new users need training and trained users need reminding, especially when new technologies or processes are introduced. Thus, Threat Tree Analysis is useful for continuing towards developing an information security policy according to SS 62 77 99-1 standard.
