Résumé :
Access arrangements for birth parents of crown wards are a concern for child protection workers. Data on 84 crown wards were collected from 11 in care workers at a Children's Aid Society in Ontario, to determine whether best practice guidelines were being observed. Best practice derived from literature was operationalized as: (1) inclusion of birth parents and others in decisions affecting the child, and (2) connectivity ---maintaining family ties. Regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of inclusion and connectivity scores. Results showed three significant predictors of inclusion---worker knowledge, years in child welfare, and birth parents' source of income---and two predictors of connectivity---worker knowledge and parents' source of income. Findings suggest that agency training and support of workers can have a positive effect on implementation of best practice. The effect of income source is a puzzle, as income from employment was associated with lower inclusion scores, but higher connectivity scores.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Within the Brazilian strategy to reform out-of-home care services, efforts have been directed to the prioritization of foster care over congregate care. This study draws from the perspective that childhood is socially construed, therefore child protection systems are dependent of notions and ideals of childhood, especially concerning the child deprived of parental care. Interviews with ten professionals involved in the implementation and execution of foster care services in different cities were conducted for this study. Thematic analysis of interviews was triangulated with the contents of National Guidelines for out-of-home care services and legal provisions with the aim of investigating how ideas on children deprived of parental care and their best interests are translated into practice. Three research questions guided the study: (1) how participants perceive the out-of-home care reform and the provisions of rights in different care modalities, especially regarding how children placed in different types of out-of-home care are perceived, (2) how participants view children’s best interests and which practices are believed to secure them and (3) how practitioners’ views relate to the contents of the National Guidelines. Five themes emerged in the analysis: a scientific and legal defense of (1) foster care as the most up to date form of out-of-home care, the prioritization of (2) children’s needs for individualized parental care, that (3) practitioners’ strong discretion is conditioned by foster families’ choices, that (4) institutionalization and group are detrimental to children, and the invocation that (5) children must be onboard. The study concludes that a clearer conceptualization of the rights and bests interests of children deprived of parental is required to better inform the reform of child protection and its practices, where consideration to children’s participation could be extended over acceptance to decisions.

Users of IoT devices are for many people today part of everyday life and more and more devices are connected to people's households. Smart homes have everything from refrigerators and surveillance cameras connected to a network and the internet. The problem with this is that many of these units do not have sufficient capacity or lack adequate security measures to protect themselves against potential attack vectors. Lack of security for devices in the smart home can cause the devices to be hacked and manipulated by attackers. Those who can protect the smart home from tampering with its IoT devices are the users in the smart home and the developers of the IoT devices. Although it is not always clear for whom the security measures apply to, which is something that this study aims to clarify. This literature study is based on existing security measures identified by previous research. It differs from previous research by mapping out which security measures and best practices that are applicable to users and developers to protect the smart home from being manipulated. Using a systematic literature search, 22 studies were selected to answer the study's question. To answer the study's research question, a mapping method is used. The method is used to map and identify which actions are recommended for both users and developers. Using the previous research, a framework is created to clarify what the user in the smart home can do and what actions developers can and should take. The framework also demonstrates a recommended order from the author in which the measures should be carried out.

Since the 1970s, geographers have interested in studying films. However, films are ironically neglected by scholars because of their popularity. Rather, geographers prefer studying literature, paintings, songs and magazines as texts. This study explores the (non)home space in Academy Award for Best Picture Winner Films. During 1929 to 2017, total 14 films that labeled “home”, “Family Realationships” in IMDb are cases analysed in this dissertation. This research aims to understand the roles, relationships and interaction among family members, representations of the home and other non-home spaces that mutually construct the meaning of the home in the films. The discussion in this research is divided into three main sections, which are ‘Interactions among family members ‘, ‘the construction and meaning of home space in films ‘, and ‘the discussion of non-home space’. Based on the analysis of selected 14 films, the look and meaning of home space in films change with time and society. Main research findings are as follow. First, individual family member may also have conflict with others and relevant consequnces come after. Second, the main characteristic of home is considered as a ‘private’ space. Family members can feel comfortable at home space, interacting with other members and friends. Third, the non-home space usually used for people’s social activity but it also reinforces the importance of home space. Based on geographical perspective, this study explores the meaning and representation of the home space by analyzing awarded best films in Oscar. Also, this reseacrh contributes to promoting the development of film stuides in Geography.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Whenever possible, indwelling urinary catheter use is restricted because of multiple adverse effects. However, there are numerous health conditions that lead to people requiring the indefinite use of a urinary catheter. In the absence of available or acceptable alternate treatment options, a suprapubic catheter offers an invaluable means of maintaining urinary drainage. However, well-focused, robust evidence-based practice guidance is limited for suprapubic catheter-related care. This study was undertaken to ascertain best practice specific to the healthcare needs of adults living at home with a long-term suprapubic catheter. Guided by the theory of social constructionism, a mixed-methods, two-phased study enabled the integration of experiences and opinions from two groups of experts for the development of a best practice guideline. The first group of experts comprised 10 people living with a suprapubic catheter at home. This group participated in individual semi-structured in-depth interviews. Six overarching themes were generated, each representing an area of healthcare need. The themes provided the question framework for the second phase of the study, a three-round Delphi survey. Twenty-three expert nurses who had provided care to people living with a suprapubic catheter at home participated in the Delphi. The first round elicited the respondents’ opinions on specific aspects of suprapubic catheter-related care. Using qualitative content analysis, practice statements were generated and used in subsequent survey rounds. The respondents rated their level of agreement to each statement. The guideline comprises the statements that achieved a consensus of agreement. Through social processes, a comprehensive holistic best practice guideline was developed that strongly promotes self-efficacy. The six elements of the guideline comprise psychological support needs, cystostomy site care, suprapubic catheter replacement, drainage equipment practices, complication avoidance and management, and planning ahead. This thesis contributes a substantial and considerate resource to guide health professionals, promoting standardised care for the optimal wellbeing of people living with a suprapubic catheter at home.

Bassingthwaighte, Carol Janet. « Deciding what’s best for my child : factors that influence parents’ decisions about the care of technology-dependent children at home ». Thesis, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4334.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Over the past decade there has been an increase in the population of children who are technology-dependent and living at home. This has created new roles for parents who learn all aspects of their child's care, including procedures that have traditionally been within the professional's domain. In the process of caring for their child, parents make many decisions related to that care. The factors that influence parental decisions are likely different from those that influence nurses' decisions. Differences between parents and nurses regarding what is the "best care" for a child can result in conflict between them. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the factors that parents perceived as influencing their decisions regarding the care of their technology-dependent child at home. A secondary analysis was performed on data that had been collected for a phenomenological study which explored the role of the nurse in the home care of children with complex health care needs. Transcripts from interviews with ten parents were analyzed, using an interpretivist paradigm and a symbolic interactionism perspective. Findings revealed that parental readiness for decision-making varied. When parents were first at home they appreciated assistance from nurses to help set up care routines. However, over time, all parents wished to be the decision-maker regarding their child's care. If nurses did not consult parents regarding decisions about their child's care, it created stress for parents or conflict with the nurses. When making decisions parents considered factors related to their child's medical condition or care needs, as well as their child's developmental stage. Parents also considered factors related to themselves, such as their previous experience, their underlying values, other family responsibilities, or their level of fatigue or stress. Finally, parents considered factors related to the environment, such as the parent-nurse relationship, the availability and type of supports, and the physical aspects of the home. Seldom did they consider one factor in isolation from others. Rather, a complex web of factors underlay most decisions, and individual factors influenced the resulting decision in various directions. Three key ideas from the findings are discussed in relation to the existing theoretical and research literature. As well, implications for nursing practice, education, research and program planning are presented.

Botha, Carla-Lee. « A gab analysis to compare best practice recommendations legal requirements when raising information security awareness amongst home users of online banking ». Diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/5457.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
South African home users of the Internet use the Internet to perform various everyday functions. These functions include, but are not limited to, online shopping, online gaming, social networking and online banking. Home users of online banking face multiple threats, such as phishing and social engineering. These threats come from hackers attempting to obtain confidential information, such as online banking authentication credentials, from home users. It is, thus, essential that home users of online banking be made aware of these threats, how to identify them and what countermeasures to implement to protect themselves from hackers. In this respect, information security awareness (ISA) programmes are an effective way of making the home users of online banking aware of both the threats they face and the countermeasures available to protect themselves from these threats. There are certain legal requirements with which South African banks have to comply when implementing ISA initiatives. Non-compliance or failure to demonstrate due care and due diligence should a security incident occur will result in financial penalties for the bank as well as possible brand damage and loss of customers. Banks implement international best practice recommendations in an effort to comply with legislation. These include recommendations for information security awareness. This research investigated both information security best practice recommendations and information security legal requirements for information security awareness. A selected list of information security best practices was investigated for best practice recommendations while a selected list of information security legislation was investigated for legal requirements imposed on South African banks. A gap analysis was performed on both these recommendations and requirements to determine whether the implementation of best practice recommendations resulted in compliance with legal requirements. The gap analysis found that the implementation of best practice recommendations does not result in compliance with legal requirements. Accordingly, the outcome of this research highlighted the importance of understanding the legal requirements and ensuring that adequate controls are in place with which to achieve compliance.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Childbirth in Australia occurs largely in a medicalised context, with 96.9% of births occurring in hospital, 2.2% in birth centres and 0.4% at home as planned homebirths (Li, Zeki, Hilder, & Sullivan, 2013). Only a small percentage of women choose to birth outside the system – that is, have no midwife present (freebirth), or elect to have a homebirth with medical risk factors. In Australia, women with risk factors have little choice but to birth in hospital under obstetric care as they are often excluded from midwifery care programs, birth centres and publicly funded homebirth. In Australia, the choice to birth at home is often met with hostility from medical practitioners, while attracting disapproval from the majority of society. It is within this context that the women in this study have made their choice to birth outside the system. The research question for this study is: what motivates women to birth outside the system – that is, to have a homebirth with risk factors present, or a freebirth where the birth at home is intentionally unattended by health professionals.
