This article discusses the relatively unknown poetry of Bessarion, the future Cardinal. The author argues with a negative opinion of F. M. Pontani concerning the three epicedia on the death of Theodora Comnena. The author analyses the composition, artistic means of expression and intertextual links in order to revise the common opinion in the subject and to prove the presence of literary values in the mentioned poems.

Abstract Nel Marc. gr. Z. 333 (coll. 644), testimone del testo astronomico intitolato Παράδοσις εἰς τοὺς περσικοὺς κανόνας τῆς ἀστρονομίας (di seguito Paradosis), copiato da Bessarione, sono presenti delle aggiunte, dovute all’intervento di Bessarione stesso, che si ritrovano nella tradizione manoscritta dell’opera soltanto nei discendenti del Marc. gr. Z. 333. Tali aggiunte sono tratte da un testo astronomico di Isacco Argiro e da una versione della Paradosis riveduta da Teodoro Meliteniote. L’analisi filologica e paleografica dimostra che in entrambi i casi le aggiunte sono ricavate da un codice di Giovanni Cortasmeno. Ciò dimostra che il Bessarione ebbe Cortasmeno come maestro non solo nella filosofia aristotelica (come già era noto), ma anche nell’astronomia, e che dunque il suo interesse per questa scienza si sviluppò già nella fase poco nota della sua formazione giovanile a Costantinopoli, e non solo, come si riteneva sino ad oggi, sotto la guida di Giorgio Gemisto Pletone a Mistrà dopo il 1431.

Abstract This paper shows how Islamic astronomy played a significant role in the education of one of the most important Christian figures in the history of culture between eastern and western Europe, promoter of a crusade against the Ottoman Turks, namely Cardinal Bessarion (1400/1408–72). While the Byzantine polymath has generally been considered a purist of Ptolemaic astronomy, his interest in Islamic astronomy can be traced back to his youth and persisted throughout his life, as is testified by several sources from his manuscripts collection. It is misleading therefore to consider him a ‘purist’ of Ptolemy. The paper provides a survey of the texts of Islamic astronomy among the manuscripts of Bessarion’s estate. These are compared to Ptolemaic astronomy in order to assess the importance of Islamic astronomy within the framework of Bessarion’s collection. The results shed new light not only on Bessarion’s astronomical interests, but also on the reception of Islamic astronomy in non-Islamicate contexts in the fifteenth century, such as the late Byzantine Empire, Rhodes, Crete, Venice, and European humanism.

Abstract The paper examines the Dialogue De pace fidei written by Nicolaus Cusanus in 1453 to settle disputes arising from events that triggered religious unrest, such as the fall of Constantinople in May 1453, the invasion and massacre of the Turks led by Sultan Mehmed II and the defeat of the Christians. Following the disintegration of medieval Christianity, Cusanus, instead of promoting a crusade, as Cardinal Bessarione did, proposed a more suitable way to make the major exponents of different religions interact in a fruitful dialogue, hoping for the peace of a single universal faith. The arguments through which Cusanus claimed the concept of a concordance and pacification of the faith reveal the originality and topicality of the message communicated by the humanist, founded on the doctrine of peace in the faith, overcoming inter-confessional barriers and religious divergences. The author contrasts the divergences, massacres and wars with a doctrinal comparison among different religions through dialogue. The paper invites reflection upon the religious struggles that still spread discord in the world.

Abstract The cardinal Bessarion was a foremost figure of the Italian Renaissance and late Byzantium. However, some of the details of his life are not yet securely established, especially his date of birth. Over the last century, scholars have proposed dates ranging from 1400 to 1408. In this study, I critically interrogate the two most commonly accepted dates (1400 and 1408). In the past, scholars have relied on the age requirements of canon law or the testimony of Italian observers to determine Bessarion’s age. By critically examining the validity of these two assumptions, I reprioritize the evidence, approximating the cardinal’s year of birth as 1403.

George of Trebizond (1395-1472) has spent a significant part of his life translating Greek books into Latin. The bulk of his translations is impressive: from Ptolemy’s Almagest to John Chrysostom’s homilies and works by Cyril of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, and Aristotle. He was quite an experienced translator, who had worked out an elaborated method explained in several writings. At the height of his career, George rather hastily translated Plato’s Laws. The haste and, probably, George’s bias against Plato and Platonism resulted in numerous inaccuracies of translation. Several years later, Basilios Bessarion closely scrutinized these faults in the fifth book of his In Calumniatorem Platonis, a comprehensive work aiming to refute the arguments set out in George of Trebizond’s anti-Platonic treatise Comparatio Philosophorum Aristotelis et Platonis. The paper analyses the use of such rhetorical devices as sarcasm and irony in Bessarion’s In Calumniatorem Platonis and especially in his commentary on George’s translation of Laws; it also aims to demonstrate how Bessarion turns George of Trebizond into a comic figure, thus compromising both the opponent and his interpretation of Plato’s doctrine.

Abstract The Bessarion chapel in the church of Santi Apostoli represents a new chapter in the study of the Roman Quattrocento. Its frescoes, painted by Antoniazzo Romano between 1464 and 1467, are a fundamental example of the Roman artistic taste in the early Renaissance. This essay examines unexplored aspects surrounding the origin of the chapel by understanding how Romano obtained this commission and how much he used visual solutions borrowed from the past. In addition, this investigation sets out to reconsider the artistic influence of the Bessarion commission, focusing on the paintings which have recently been discovered in the Orsini church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Formello (Italy). The questions concerning the Bessarion chapel raised in this study will lead to a more exhaustive understanding of this commission and will shed light on the complexity of the early Renaissance in Rome, where tradition and innovation masterfully coexist.

To date many scholars seem to have agreed that Cardinal Bessarion was a physical and spiritual exile from Constantinople who sought to preserve his national culture in the alien environment of fifteenth-century Rome. In this thesis I am seeking to re-open the debate about Bessarion's role and aspirations in western Europe as expressed through the mechanism of his cultural projects. I argue that, in his guise as a Roman cardinal, he endeavoured to establish a western identity for himself that furthered his political goals. Though he never rejected his Byzantine roots, the messages he seems to have conveyed through artistic and literary patronage suggest that he was working towards some sort of assimilation into his Italian environment. By examining key projects that the cardinal patronised I identify strong western characteristics in terms of style and message. His major fresco commission for his burial chapel in SS Apostoli, Rome was executed by Antoniazzo Romano, a local Roman artist, using stylistic and iconographic H vocabularies that were. current in quattrocento Italy. Bessarion then commissioned an icon from the same artist rather than from a Greek icon painter. In the literary sphere we can also recognise an effort to establish a library in the tradition of his Italian peers. And he even dabbled in the western technological advances in printing, becoming one of the first contemporary authors to have his work printed. This thesis seeks to re-focus a spotlight on Bessarion as an immigrant who was not compelled to leave his native land but who chose to relocate. It is proposed here that the cardinal's cultural projects reflected his efforts to integrate and to succeed in his adopted surroundings.

Gli eventi del glorioso Quattrocento sembrano confutare tale interpretazione: gli sforzi crociati antiturchi, in soccorso di Costantinopoli, più volte evocati non si realizzano; l’attenzione dei principes alla causa è sempre più debole. Ma allora perchè la fortuna di Bessarion politicus? La tesi – basata sull'analisi degli scritti di Bessarione dal momento della sua venuta in Italia alla fine della sua vita - è volta a riscoprire le ragioni dell’agiografia politica del cardinale, e dei suoi testi ufficiali: rispetto l’alterazione storica cui questa narrazione ha dato vita, pare rimanere intatta la vera abilità di Bessarione. Ovvero, quella di persuasore politico.

Cardinal Bessarion came from his native Byzantium and settled in Rome in the mid fifteenth century. He was a Basilian monk and, at the time, a Greek Archbishop. His cultural background was in the rationalist tradition of Greek theology. As the Byzantine Empire succumbed to the invading Turks he made it his mission to preserve as much of Greek cultural heritage as possible. Part of this mission was to set out for the Italians (or Latins as he called them) the teachings of Plato of which they had only scanty knowledge. His work in Calumniatorem Platonis was intended as a defence of Plato's teachings against the criticisms of the militant Aristotelian George of Trebizond. This thesis examines Bessarion's exposition of Plato's teachings in that work on a range of philosophical questions that were litmus tests of theological orthodoxy at the time. It argues that Bessarion's exposition of Plato is heavily interpreted through a prism of later commentaries and thinkers particularly the Neo-Platonists. It shows how these interpretations and Bessarion's use of his sources is determined by his aim of showing that Plato's philosophy was closer to Christian orthodoxy than Aristotle's and, therefore, provided a firmer philosophical base than the prevailing Aristotelianism.

Author's presentation of the revised ed. of the dissertation published as a book : Nella Roma di metà ‘400 Niccolò V avvia un grande progetto di salvataggio della cultura classica greca, che passa sia attraverso l’acquisizione di centinaia di manoscritti greci di provenienza orientale sia attraverso la versione di classici greci in latino. All’interno del gruppo di traduttori (tutti lautamente pagati) che il papa riuscì ad allestire, certo il più prolifico fu Giorgio Trapezunzio, un cretese emigrato in Italia in giovane età. A Giorgio il papa affidò versioni di opere lunghe e complesse come le Omelie a Giovanni, la Praeparatio di Eusebio di Cesarea, l’Almagesto di Tolomeo e appunto le Leggi di Platone. Estromesso dal prestigioso entourage papale, Giorgio sfogò la sua rabbia nello scritt o Comparatio philosophorum Aristotelis et Platonis . Reimpiegando motivi tratti soprattutto dalle Leggi platoniche egli attacca frontalmente i platonici del suo tempo e in primis il Cardinal Bessarione e il suo maestro Gemisto Pletone. Non è dunque una sorpresa che la replica del Bessarione parta proprio con la critica della version e platonica di Trapezunzio, presupposto per dimostrare che il greco ha in larga parte frainteso l’insegnamento platonico. La qui presente edizione propone una tra le versioni di classici in assoluto più controverse del periodo umanistico e ne mette sistematicamente a confronto il testo con le puntuali obiezioni, costantemente stampate a pie’ di pagina, mosse dal Bessarione nel V libro del suo In Calumniatorem Platonis . Con questo accorgimento grafico la serrata discussione che oppose i due intellettuali greci sul terreno del testo platonico si anima di nuova vita e per la prima volta dal secolo XV si rende possibile una valutazione di quel dibattito finalmente libera da pregiudizi.

The aim of the essay is to analyze the production of greek manuscripts in the peripheral areas of the byzantine empire, providing an art-historical perspective to one of the most debated issues in studies. Moving from the extraordinary heritage of the Biblioteca Marciana of Venice, were selected fifteen decorated manuscripts, emblematic of a production often underestimated. After an introduction dedicated to the constitution and development of the collection, from Bessarion to the eighteenth-century collectors, the essay will firstly focus on greek manuscripts made in Southern Italy and Sicily between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. The study of ornamentation between the tenth and eleventh century is conducted through the analysis of the decorative repertoire that developed in Calabria, Campania and Lazio as a result of the intensification of relations between greek monasticism and Benedictine monasticism; then it goes to the study of cultural policy of Norman rulers in Sicily during the twelfth century, and its effects on the byzantine miniature in Sicily. A further chapter is finally devoted to the Salento of the fourteenth century, deepening the illustrations of Glycas Marc. gr. Z. 402 (1031). The second section of the essay focuses on oriental provinces and Greece between X and XIV century. Moving from paleographic and codicological studies, the first chapter of the section is intended to provide an art-historical perspective on manuscript production in the peripheral areas of Constantinople, tying some "eccentric" details to the ornamental repertoire of certain provinces, from Cappadocia to Bithynia, to Greece. Finally, the last chapter deepens the book decoration in Thessalonica at the beginning of the fourteenth century, studying its relations with the monumental art in Macedonia and in Serbia under Stephen Uroš II Milutin.
L’elaborato intende affrontare criticamente la produzione di manoscritti greci nelle aree periferiche dell’impero bizantino, fornendo un punto di vista storico-artistico ad una delle problematiche più dibattute dagli studi contemporanei. Muovendo dallo straordinario patrimonio della Biblioteca Marciana di Venezia, sono stati selezionati quindici codici che, per la loro decorazione, sono emblematici di una produzione spesso sottovalutata. Dopo un’introduzione dedicata alla nascita e allo sviluppo della collezione marciana, da Bessarione fino ai collezionisti del Settecento, nella prima parte del lavoro l’attenzione è posta sui codici greci realizzati in Italia meridionale e in Sicilia fra il X e il XIV secolo. Dallo studio dell’ornamentazione fra X e XI secolo, attraverso l’analisi del repertorio decorativo che si sviluppò fra Calabria, Campania e Lazio quale conseguenza dell’intensificarsi dei rapporti fra monachesimo greco e monachesimo benedettino, si passa quindi ad analizzare la politica culturale della dinastia Altaville nel XII secolo, e dei suoi riflessi sulla miniatura bizantina nell’isola. Un ulteriore capitolo è poi dedicato al Salento del XIV secolo, approfondendo le illustrazioni del Glycas Marc. gr. Z. 402 (1031). La seconda sezione dell’elaborato si concentra invece sulle provincie orientali e la Grecia fra X e XIV secolo. Muovendo da studi paleografici e codicologici, il primo capitolo della sezione intende offrire un punto di vista storico-artistico sulla produzione manoscritta nelle aree periferiche di Costantinopoli, legando alcuni dettagli “eccentrici” del repertorio ornamentale a determinate provincie, dalla Cappadocia alla Bitinia, alla Grecia continentale.Conclude il lavoro un approfondimento sulla decorazione libraria a Tessalonica all’inizio del Trecento, e sui suoi rapporti con l’arte monumentale in Macedonia e nella Serbia di Stefano II Uroš Milutin.

La riscoperta e la rivalutazione della filosofia greca antica fu uno dei risultati più rilevanti della rinascita degli studi classici nel Rinascimento e, grazie al contributo di figure chiave come Marsilio Ficino e Pico della Mirandola, il platonismo divenne una pietra miliare nella storia del pensiero occidentale. Tuttavia, prima della fioritura degli studi platonici di Ficino e Pico, si scatenò una lotta tra i sostenitori della filosofia platonica e aristotelica: si tratta della cosiddetta controversia platonico-aristotelica del Quattrocento. Le figure chiave di questa controversia furono Giorgio Trapezunzio, che scrisse un libro contro Platone e i suoi seguaci, e il cardinal Bessarione, che rispose al Trapezunzio nell'opera In calumniatorem Platonis. Poco dopo, i protetti di Bessarione Domizio Calderini e Niccolò Perotti scrissero due trattati a sostegno del loro patrono e in difesa dell'In calumniatorem Platonis, che rappresentano i prodotti più significativi dell'ultima fase della controversia platonico-aristotelica. Nella tesi, ho ricostruito le diverse fasi della polemica, a partire dal De differentiis di Giorgio Gemisto Pletone, e poi mi sono concentrato sulle opere di Calderini e Perotti, di cui ho curato la prima edizione critica con traduzione e commento. Lo scopo della mia ricerca è di fornire la prima panoramica generale sulla controversia platonico-aristotelica e un'analisi approfondita di questi due trattati, che sono stati prodotti al crocevia di platonismo, filosofia medievale e pensiero moderno. The rediscovery and revaluation of ancient Greek philosophy was one of the most relevant results of the rebirth of the classical studies in the Renaissance, and, thanks to the contribution of pivotal figures such as Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola, Platonism became a cornerstone in the history of Western thought. Nevertheless, before the flowering of Platonic studies of Ficino and Pico, a struggle between the supporters of Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy exploded: this is the so-called Plato-Aristotle controversy in the 15th century. The key figures of this controversy were George of Trebizond, who produced a treatise against Plato and his followers, and Cardinal Bessarion, who replied to George of Trebizond in the Against Plato’s Calumniator. Shortly after, Bessarion’s protégées Domizio Calderini and Niccolò Perotti wrote two treatises in support of his patron and in defense of the Against Plato’s Calumniator, which represent the most significant products of the last stage of the Plato-Aristotle controversy. In this thesis, I reconstructed the different phases of the controversy, starting from George Gemistos Pletho’s De differentiis, and then I focused on Calderini and Perotti’s works, that I edited, translated and commented for the first time. The aim of my research is to provide the first general overview on the Plato-Aristotle controversy, and in-depth analysis of these two treatises, which were produced at the crossroad of Platonism, Medieval philosophy and Modern thought.

Résumé :
La mostra dal titolo Il libro di Bessarione in difesa di Platone: nell’officina dell’ultimo filosofo bizantino celebra la figura di Bessarione, una delle personalità più affascinanti e, al contempo, uno dei Bizantini più influenti del quindicesimo secolo. Oggetto dell’esposizione sono alcuni preziosi documenti conservati nella Biblioteca Marciana: manoscritti, incunaboli, prime versioni a stampa dell’In Calumniatorem Platonis, il capolavoro di Bessarione. Il percorso espositivo permette al visitatore di entrare nell’‘officina’ di Bessarione e di ripercorrere le tappe del lungo e travagliato percorso intellettuale che portò all’elaborazione e pubblicazione dell’opera bessarionea, seguendo insieme le vicende dei testi in cui il progetto filosofico e culturale di Bessarione andava via via concretizzandosi. Il presente catalogo accompagna il percorso espositivo consentendo al visitatore una più proficua fruizione della mostra e aprendo al contempo interessanti orizzonti di approfondimento. Il volume si apre con un saggio che introduce al percorso espositivo; la seconda parte contiene le immagini dei documenti esposti, corredate da una breve descrizione; la terza parte ospita alcuni saggi critici che illuminano aspetti particolari dell’opera bessarionea.
