Résumé :
Objectives. To assess interreader agreements and a learning curve between three (senior, junior, and beginner) different experienced musculoskeletal ultrasonographers. Senior served as the imaging “gold standard”.Methods. Clinically dominant joints (finger, shoulder, knee, tibiotalar, and talonavicular) of 15 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients were examined by three different experienced ultrasonographers (senior 10 years, junior 10 months, and beginner one month). Each patient's ultrasonographic findings were reported unaware of the other investigators' results. coefficients, percentage agreements, sensitivities, and specificities were calculated.Results. 120 joints of 15 RA patients were evaluated. Comparing junior's and beginner's results each to the senior's findings, the overall for all examined joints was 0.83 (93%) for junior and 0.43 (76%) for beginner. Regarding the different joints, junior's findings correlate very well with the senior's findings (finger joints: ; shoulder: ; knee: ; tibiotalar joint: ; talonavicular joint: ) while beginner's findings just showed fair to moderate agreements (finger joints: ; shoulder: ; knee: ; tibiotalar joint: ; talonavicular joint: ). In total, beginner's results clearly improved from (agreement of 67%) at baseline to (agreement of 89%) at the end of the evaluation period.Conclusions. Ultrasonographic evaluation of a ten-month-experienced investigator in comparison to a senior ultrasonographer was of substantial agreement. Agreements between a beginner and a highly experienced ultrasonographer were only fair at the beginning, but during the study including ultrasonographical sessions of 15 RA patients, the beginner clearly improved in musculoskeletal ultrasonography.

Résumé :
AbstractThis study examined whether using an artificial neural network (ANN) helps beginners in diagnostic cardiac imaging to achieve similar results to experts when interpreting stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). One hundred and thirty-eight patients underwent stress MPI with Tc-labeled agents. An expert and a beginner interpreted stress/rest MPI with or without the ANN and the results were compared. The myocardium was divided into 5 regions (the apex; septum; anterior; lateral, and inferior regions), and the defect score of myocardial blood flow was evaluated from 0 to 4, and SSS, SRS, and SDS were calculated. The ANN effect, defined as the difference in each of these scores between with and without the ANN, was calculated to investigate the influence of ANN on the interpreters' performance. We classified 2 groups (insignificant perfusion group and significant perfusion group) and compared them. In the same way, classified 2 groups (insignificant ischemia group and significant ischemia group) and compared them. Besides, we classified 2 groups (normal vessels group and multi-vessels group) and compared them. The ANN effect was smaller for the expert than for the beginner. Besides, the ANN effect for insignificant perfusion group, insignificant ischemia group and multi-vessels group were smaller for the expert than for the beginner. On the other hand, the ANN effect for significant perfusion group, significant ischemia group and normal vessels group were no significant. When interpreting MPI, beginners may achieve similar results to experts by using an ANN. Thus, interpreting MPI with ANN may be useful for beginners. Furthermore, when beginners interpret insignificant perfusion group, insignificant ischemia group and multi-vessel group, beginners may achieve similar results to experts by using an ANN.

Résumé :
The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanics of jumping and landing in defense between beginner and professional volleyball players. 10 professional volleyball players from Iranian leagues and 10 beginners with less than 2 years of training experience participated in this study. Selected kinetic and kinematic variables in jump and landing movement in 5 tasks of volleyball defense was analyzed. There were no significant differences between beginners and professional groups in different types of jumping and landing in the phase of preparation, jumping and landing in the variables of ground reaction force in different directions except the variable YP1 in the side stepping to the left (P = 0.029) and loading rate. The results also showed that the knee flexion angle at the moment of landing in all jumps was significantly higher in professional volleyball players than in the beginner group. The difference between the groups in maximum knee flexion in the landing phase was also significant in all jumps except the side stepping to the left (p <0.05) ). Professional volleyball players have a lower risk of ACL injury than beginner volleyball players. As a result, to reduce the risk of ACL injury in beginners, it is necessary to pay attention to landing exercises and focus on increasing the flexion angle.

The purpose of this study is to explore the beginner’s introductory qualitative research experience to understand the meaning of internal and external experiences experienced by researchers in the process of conducting qualitative research. In particular, I would like to explore what kind of experiences researchers form in relation to their identity as qualitative researchers in the process of conducting their research. For this purpose, a research puzzle called ‘What kind of experience did I form in the process of conducting qualitative research as a beginner of qualitative research and what is the meaning of the experience?’ was formed, and the researcher’s own qualitative research experience was analyzed according to the narrative inquiry method of Clandinin and Connelly (2000) and the meaning of the experience was formed. The meaning of the researcher’s introductory qualitative research experience, which was reconstructed and solved with five narrative topics, is as follows. First, “the point where I stopped, come back there,” second, “grope the way for lack of sight,” third, “I get lost in the ups and downs of fear, shame, and overwhelming emotions,” and fourth, “moving forward while making a path, fifth, still on the road: living as a qualitative researcher.” This study deals with my qualitative research experience as a beginner, and it may be meaningful to expand and share empirical understanding of the process of conducting qualitative research and the process of forming identity as a qualitative researcher to beginners who start qualitative research vividly in my own voice.

Résumé :
The present study intended to investigate the possible effects of speech acts strategies on Iranian beginner and intermediate EFL learners’ speaking ability. The first step in conducting this research was the administration of QPT as the homogenizing tool. It was administered to 180 beginners and intermediate EFL learners. After analyzing the results, 80 males and females as starters and 80 males and females as intermediate subjects were chosen. Then, the beginner and intermediate EFL learners were randomly divided into control and experimental groups (including 40 beginner male and 40 female EFL learners in each class). Next, a pretest of speaking was administered to all the participants and the experimental groups received speech act role play as treatment. However, the researcher did not use any treatment of speech acts in control groups. After ten sessions, the posttest was administered to all participants. The findings suggested that awareness raising on speech acts resulted in a better speaking ability as compared to the simply traditional teaching of speaking for Iranian intermediate and beginner EFL learners. Additionally, intermediate EFL learners’ achievement in speaking was not in line with the beginner EFL learners’ achievement in the corresponding group. Finally, it was found that gender does not interact with awareness raising on speech acts in such a way as to produce a statistically significant effect on the beginner and intermediate EFL learners’ speaking ability.

Résumé :
The present study investigated the adequacy of the interaction between the center of mass (COM) and the center of pressure (COP) for maintaining dynamic stability during Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) Push Hands movements in a fixed stance. The COM of the whole body and COP were calculated. Four TCC experts, with 10.3 ± 1.7 years' experience in the Push Hands technique, and 4 TCC beginners, with 2.5 ± 1.3 years' Push Hands experience, were recruited. An Expert Vision Eagle motion analysis system collected kinematic data and 4 Kistler force plates collected the ground reaction force data. The expert group of TCC practitioners showed a significantly more vertical (P = 0.001) direction in the neutralizing circle, and significantly larger values for anterior–posterior (A–P) (P = 0.006) and vertical (P = 0.0004) displacement in the enticing circle, than the beginner group. Compared with the beginner group, the expert group demonstrated significantly greater velocity A–P (P = 0.001) and vertical (P = 0.001) COM displacements in the enticing circle. A significant extent main effect (P = 0.0028) was observed for the COPA–P excursion between the expert and beginner groups during Push Hands movements. The greater A–P force generated by both groups during the initiation of the Push Hands cycle probably reflects the more rapid and forward-oriented nature of this movement. The TCC beginners might have difficulties with movement transfers because of disruptions in the temporal sequencing of the forces. Overall, results indicated that the initial experience-related differences in COM transfers are reflected in the Push Hands movement cycle.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to autoethnographically explore a Graduate Student’s Learning Experience and Meaning in the Qualitative Education Research Methodology Seminar. To this end, I reviewed a reflective journal from March to June 2022, observed class participation, and conducted another insider interview. As results of the study, the experience of introducing qualitative research was found to be ‘participating in learning’, ‘building a learning relationship’, and ‘organizing learning’. Students enter the world of qualitative research through classes guided by advisors and textbooks suitable for beginners in qualitative research. However, beginners of qualitative research soon have difficulty in qualitative analysis and interpretation. This is because the process of qualitative analysis and interpretation is a practice that can only be learned by doing. Therefore, for beginners, feedback based on positive interdependence plays an important role in advancing to the next stage of research growth. It was also found that beginners of qualitative research seek various solutions when performing project tasks. The meaning of the introductory experience of qualitative research was found to be ‘learning about learning’, ‘learning in the research field’, and ‘learning about myself as a researcher’. Introductory experiences with a qualitative research lens are qualitative experiences of new ways of thinking and research methods. Given the nature of autoethnographical study that can be buried in their own world in the field of research, it is necessary to supplement them with rich and diverse data, especially for qualitative research beginner. In addition, beginner of qualitative research hope to become better qualitative researcher using the experience of qualitative research classes as a stepping stone. In the end, the researcher sought self-transformation by reflecting on the process of learning through participation in qualitative research classes. As a researcher and research participant, I looked back on the process of learning and seeking self-transformation. This study is expected to share experiences with beginners in qualitative research and help them understand preliminary research.

Résumé :
Nowadays, various programs are used in ski schools to teach beginners. All programs have the same goal, and that is to teach beginners specific body movements with which they will be able to manage their skis. Three programs are most commonly used in alpine skiing schools. According to one program, ski beginners are taught the basics of alpine skiing exclusively with elements of parallel skiing techniques. In the second program, ski beginners acquire knowledge using elements of snowplough and parallel ski technique. The third alpine skiing learning program combines these two methods. In addition to the program, in practice there are two approaches to learning alpine skiing. The first method involves a daily trip to a ski slope or a nearby winter tourist centre, where the skiing technique is adopted and beginners return to the place of residence the same day. The second way consists of an organized, usually seven-day, winter trip, during which the basics of alpine skiing are learned every day during the stay in the ski-resort. Regardless of the learning programs used, the safety of skiers is a priority in every alpine skiing school. Therefore, it is advisable for all beginner skiers to get involved in an alpine skiing school, as this is the best way to prevent injuries.

Résumé :
Syntactic complexity has long been taken as a significant factor in determining writing quality by EFL learners. And researchers in recent years have made a lot of efforts to devise and verify a wide range of factors or indicators for the purpose of measuring syntactic complexity or predicting EFL writing quality. The present study discussed bases itself on a self-built learner corpus with data collected over three years, with the aim of determining the applicable indices for predicting beginner writing quality. Based on previous research, the present study takes into account such factors as unit length, verb-VAC complexity, and clausal complexity. The results of pairwise comparisons by year indicate that there are significant differences for some indices but not for others. In terms of unit length, the three indicators of mean length of sentence, mean length of Tuni, and mean length of clause can serve as the main descriptive variables for the development of the language of beginners; for clausal complexity, seven indices: coordinate phrases per T-unit, verb phrases per T-unit, clauses per T-unit, coordinate phrases per clause, complex nominals per Tunit, complex nominals per clause and T-units per sentence, are the reliable indicators for beginner writing development. But indices for noun phrase complexity and verb-VAC complexity show no significant difference in the Kruskal-Wallis tests. The findings provide proof for the conclusion that knowledge and skills of modification, coordination, and subordination form the real difficulties for EFL beginners. It provides implications for coursebook design and classroom teaching where beginners are supposed to focus more on breeding awareness and skills in these aspects.

Résumé :
Purpose: “Yan Shou Hong Cui” is a representative punch in Chen-style Tai Chi. The training is an important factor in affecting the effect of Tai Chi practice. Joint angles are the most intuitive way to evaluate motion. The purpose of this study is to compare the movements of Tai Chi masters and beginners’ movements through the analysis of joint angle and punching effect, and explore the influence of training years on the power generation of Tai Chi punches. Methods: There were 14 Chinese Chen-style Tai Chi subjects recruited for this study. They were divided into the master group (n = 7, age of 38.14 ± 10.42 years, height of 1.68 ± 0.06 m, weight of 71.33 ± 8.61 kg) and the beginner group (n = 7, age of 38.00 ± 11.94 years, height of 1.69 ± 0.07 m, weight of 70.14 ± 9.79 kg). The typical movement from Chen-style Tai Chi is called Yan Shou Hong Cui. All subjects were asked to perform the action three times, and the way of force was applied each time. The kinematic and kinetic characteristics of Tai Chi were analyzed by the VICON 3D motion analysis system (100 Hz) with 16 MX13 cameras, and the punch efficiency was measured by the Chinese Kung Fu Dummy (80,000 Hz). Results: The experimental results show that the shoulder, elbow, and hand movements of the master group are more precise and the force strength is more vigorous (master group: the peak angular velocity of the shoulder joint was −324.12 ± 50.88°/s, the angular velocity of the elbow joint was −112.83 ± 56.98°/s, and the hand angular velocity was −121.69 ± 49.55°/s; beginner group: shoulder angle velocity was −281.17 ± 30.56°/s, the elbow angle speed was −263.64 ± 68.63°/s, and the hand angle speed was −36.80 ± 12.53°/s). The rotation angle and rotation speed of the hip joint in the master group were significantly higher than those in the beginner group (as for the hip rotation angle, the master group was 64°, which was significantly higher than the beginner group’s 44°, and there was a significant difference (p = 0.019 < 0.05)). In terms of rotation speed, the peak value of the master group was 370.3 ± 94.8°/s, which was significantly faster than that of the beginner group at 210.4 ± 56.1°/s, and there was a very significant difference (p = 0.003 < 0.01). The master group’s punch effect acceleration (496.39 ± 256.52 m/s2) was significantly higher than that of the beginner group (396.90 ± 116.79 m/s2). Conclusion: People who practice Tai Chi for a long time differ from the beginners in terms of joint flexibility, punching posture, and the effect of application.

Résumé :
The role of interactional corrective feedback in second language assessment has attracted both teachers’ and second language researchers’ interest, as they are concerned with when corrective feedback can be implemented to assist second language acquisition. This quasi-experimental intervention study aims to investigate the impact of two corrective feedback types, namely recasts and metalinguistic feedback, and students’ proficiency in the acquisition of the Greek perfective past tense. The sample consists of ten adult beginners’ classes (n = 86 students) of the Modern Greek Language Teaching Center of the University of Athens. The classes were randomly assigned to three treatment conditions: (a) recast; (b) metalinguistic feedback; (c) no feedback and participated in form-focused production activities. A grammaticality judgment pretest and posttest were administrated to measure participants’ development on the explicit knowledge of perfective past tense morphology. After the treatment, participants were divided in the database into high and low beginner students based on their performance on a placement test administrated prior to the treatment. Results revealed that the groups that received corrective feedback outperformed the control group, while no statistical significance was found between the two treatment groups. Moreover, high-beginner learners benefited equally from both feedback types, whereas low-beginner learners benefited significantly from metalinguistic feedback.

Résumé :
Detection of cephalometric landmarks has contributed to the analysis of malocclusion during orthodontic diagnosis. Many recent studies involving deep learning have focused on head-to-head comparisons of accuracy in landmark identification between artificial intelligence (AI) and humans. However, a human–AI collaboration for the identification of cephalometric landmarks has not been evaluated. We selected 1193 cephalograms and used them to train the deep anatomical context feature learning (DACFL) model. The number of target landmarks was 41. To evaluate the effect of human–AI collaboration on landmark detection, 10 images were extracted randomly from 100 test images. The experiment included 20 dental students as beginners in landmark localization. The outcomes were determined by measuring the mean radial error (MRE), successful detection rate (SDR), and successful classification rate (SCR). On the dataset, the DACFL model exhibited an average MRE of 1.87 ± 2.04 mm and an average SDR of 73.17% within a 2 mm threshold. Compared with the beginner group, beginner–AI collaboration improved the SDR by 5.33% within a 2 mm threshold and also improved the SCR by 8.38%. Thus, the beginner–AI collaboration was effective in the detection of cephalometric landmarks. Further studies should be performed to demonstrate the benefits of an orthodontist–AI collaboration.

Résumé :
Aim. To evaluate the effects of riding for beginners (short-term) and advanced (long-term) riders with cerebral palsy on their whole mobility. The study involved 15 subjects (two girls and eleven boys). The subjects were aged from 3 to 19 years (8.73 years ± 5.85). All of the subjects had been diagnosed with a spastic form of cerebral palsy. The duration of the participation differed as follows: the advanced subjects had been riding for 1-4 years (2.66 years ± 1.16), while the beginners have been riding for two weeks (10 sessions). Group I (advanced riders) consisted of eight subjects (7 boys and 1 girl) who had therapy sessions regularly once a week and differed only in terms of the duration of their participation in the experiment. Group II (beginners) consisted of seven children (1 girl and 6 boys) who participated in only 10 riding sessions. All of the subjects were assessed according to the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) and Gross Motor Function Classification System for CP (GMFCS) both before the investigation and after it. Conclusions. Ten riding lessons did not have an influence on the beginner riders with cerebral palsy gross motor functions and their gross motor function level did not change. However, in half of the advanced riders with cerebral palsy, the gross motor functions significantly improved. Meanwhile, the level of the performance of the gross motor skills in the four advanced riders increased, but this difference was not statistically significant.

Résumé :
This study investigates the attitudes of trainee interpreters towards their training programmes at Yemeni universities. 61 interpreters in Taiz province participated in the study. A 16-item questionnaire was designed to explore their attitudes towards their programmes. The findings of this study show that the interpreters are not satisfied with the current programmes. The results also show that the programme does not adequately enhance the interpreting competence of would-be interpreters. The programme is mainly concerned with the enhancement of the linguistic and cultural competencies, paying less attention to other components of interpreting competence such as instrumental, psycho-physiological, and strategic. The results also show that respondents are not satisfied with the content of instructional modules, activities used in the training, the time allocated for practicums, and the amount of technology integration. This study has also investigated the interpreting directionality of beginner and advanced student interpreters at Al-Saeed University by quantitatively analysing their final scores in interpreting modules. Beginner and advanced groups in the current study demonstrate different levels of interpreting competence in both directions. The results from various statistical tools show that student interpreters, whether beginners or advanced, are more competent to interpret into their mother tongue, while very few of them show balanced skills in both directions. Additionally, the overall scores of beginner and advanced student interpreters in both directions do not reflect the expected level of proficiency.

Résumé :
This research-based article shows strengths and weaknesses that first level students of English at the Universidad Técnica del Norte of Ibarra-Ecuador have on the uses, functions and meaning of English prepositions. Prepositions, as part of the grammar system, can occur everywhere in the process of writing, and there are not many rules to help beginner students to use them correctly. It is difficult for students to learn to use prepositions all on their own; even after a lot of work and effort to achieve a high English proficiency level, students of English still struggle with prepositions. Thus, the main purpose of this work was to describe and explain why beginner students of English make mistakes when using prepositions in writing, and then contribute to the correct use of prepositions in English to strengthen not only Speaking but Writing skills. The findings showed that there were some mistakes that beginner students committed at the moment of using prepositions when writing; the main errors encountered have relation with the following phenomena: i) Language transfer or interference from the mother tongue, ii) Transfer of training, and iii) Overgeneralization of target language rules. Therefore, this article indicates that guiding students in the study of prepositions is essential before fossilization occurs; it also motivates teachers to supplement their classes with refreshing activities and exercises that will give learners exposure to target writing since beginners.

In our study, we used the Values-In-Action (VIA) questionnaire to find out what strengths and virtues mentor teachers have. It is important to make mentors aware of their own strengths for several reasons. If they can apply these in their teaching work, it can become a calling and they can be fulfilled by it as well as be protected against burnout.

Résumé :
Objective: Sports injury can occur due to several factors, which makes it extremely difficult to conduct cause and effect studies by controlling and evaluating a specific variable. Common reason for the appearance of injuries is poor physical preparation for the proposed training load, a factor that is more present in high intensity sports. CrossFit has been gaining a great deal of attention in recent years due to its dynamic mix of varied sports. Beginner and intermediary level participants are very common in CrossFit gyms, so the understanding the training effect for this group is very important for healthy practice (aiming for safety and injury rate). Methods: Only original articles were included, between 2000 and 2019 (November), with the search for the word "CrossFit" in nine databases. It was accepted only studies in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Results: After screening, only three studies met the inclusion criteria following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses assessment. The most common injury segments in beginner and intermediate practitioners were the shoulder and the knee. There are functional and morphological mechanisms that makes injury become more common, such as life habits and anatomic / physiological body disposition. Conclusion: CrossFit beginners and intermediaries participants demonstrated moderate injury level. Studies with more subjects showed a lower injury level. The most injured segments found were knee and shoulder. According to our results the risk of injury in CrossFit beginner and intermediary participants is acceptable, and discussed in recent published reviews.

Résumé :
The present study examined the perceptions of female Saudi ESL students about their attitudes toward communication and with male ESL students in mixed gender classes in the US. It further investigated the cultural differences that may impact Saudi female ESL students in the English language learning process. Twenty female Saudi ESL students (10 and 10 beginners) participated in the research. The findings revealed that female Saudi ESL learners’ attitudes changed at some level while learning English in a foreign country. Furthermore, the findings indicated that traditional gender segregation due to the Saudi cultural background was the primary determinant for the way female Saudi ESL learners communicated with the opposite gender. The results also showed that female Saudi ESL learners were confident and did not show any shyness at an advanced level compared to the beginner ones. However, the acquisition of ESL had produced considerable development in the personalities of advanced learners that they did not feel the need to avoid men at all, unlike beginners. The research findings may help ESL teachers, educators, and curriculum developers by providing important insights, and it also has future implications for the teaching of English in general.

Résumé :
The procedure of interpreting the content of the musical composition studied in a performance class is often reduced to reconstituting the version created by the instructor. The foundation of the joint interpretation with the pupil of the compositions may be served by the process of functioning of semantic fi gures in the context of the musical theme. Its semantic organization is impossible without turning to the foundational concept of semantic analysis — the intonational lexis, which summate the perceptions of the intonational vocabulary of the composer and the musical work he created. Thereby, the semantic explicitization must be the basis for objective analysis of the musical composition’s fi gurative-content aspect. The article examines the performers’ interpretations of musical compositions in beginners’ guitar classes on the basis of analyzing the musical text’s semantic structures in classical and contemporary music. For the beginner musician application of technique of semantic analysis will become a reliable source for a joint search for performance solution together with the instructor.

Résumé :
Esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is technically difficult. To make it safer, we developed a novel method using overtube with a traction forceps (OTF) for countertraction during submucosal dissection. We conducted anex vivoanimal study and compared the clinical outcomes between OTF-ESD and conventional method (C-ESD). A total of 32 esophageal ESD procedures were performed by four beginner and expert endoscopists. After circumferential mucosal incision for the target lesion, structured as the isolated pig esophagus 3 cm long, either C-ESD or OTF-ESD was randomly selected for submucosal dissection. All the ESD procedures were completed as en bloc resections, while perforation only occurred in a beginner’s C-ESD procedure. The dissection time for OTF-ESD was significantly shorter than that for C-ESD for both the beginner and expert endoscopists (22.8±8.3 min versus7.8±4.5 min,P<0.001, and11.3±4.4 min versus5.9±2.5 min,P=0.01, resp.). The frequency and volume of the submucosal injections were significantly smaller for OTF-ESD than for C-ESD (1.3±0.6times versus2.9±1.5times,P<0.001, and5.3±2.8 mL versus15.6±7.3 mL,P<0.001, resp.). Histologically, muscular injury was more common among the C-ESD procedures (80% versus 13%,P=0.009). Our results indicated that the OTF-ESD technique is useful for the safe and easy completion of esophageal ESD.

Résumé :
This study examines the second language acquisition of Spanish past tense morphology by three groups of English speakers (beginners, intermediates and advanced). We adopt a novel methodological approach – combining oral corpus data with controlled experimental data – in order to provide new evidence on the validity of the Lexical Aspect Hypothesis (LAH) in L2 Spanish. Data elicited through one comprehension and three oral tasks with varying degrees of experimental control show that the emergence of temporal markings is determined mainly by the dynamic/non-dynamic contrast (whether a verb is a state or an event) as beginner and intermediate speakers use Preterit with event verbs but Imperfect mainly with state verbs. One crucial finding is that although advanced learners use typical Preterit–telic associations in the least controlled oral tasks, as predicted by the LAH, this pattern is often reversed in tasks designed to include non-prototypical (and infrequent) form–meaning contexts. The results of the comprehension task also show that the Preterit-event and Imperfect-state associations observed in the production data determine the interpretation that learners assign to the Preterit and the Imperfect as well. These results show that beginner and intermediate learners treat event verbs (achievements, accomplishments and activities) in Spanish as a single class that they associate with Preterit morphology. We argue that dynamicity contrasts, and not telicity, affect learners’ use of past tense forms during early stages of acquisition.

Résumé :
This study aimed to identify and describe the best method of teaching rules of nahwu for beginners and advanced students for foreign speakers (non-Arabic). This research was a qualitative descriptive study with a type of library research by tracing references in data collection. The results of this study indicate that the best method of teaching rules of nahwu for foreign speakers is of two methods, namely: The first one is the aural-oral method (sam'iyyah syafawiyyah) for the beginner level. This method uses patterned training techniques (pattern drill) through activities of istimā' (listening) and kalām (speaking) to form behavior (habits) for beginner-level learners in using language along with learning rules of nahwu through sentence structure (applied nahwu); The second one is the method of al-istiqra'iyyah (inductive method) for advanced students. This method is one that makes the dialogue/reading text the center of learning all language skills, both speaking and reading related to the rules of nahwu by using three training techniques (drill) that do not come out of the dialogue/reading text, namely the pattern drill (patterned training), meaning drill (exercise of the meaning) and communicative drill (communication exercise). These three techniques combine the formation of behavioral habits in using language along with understanding the meaning and ability to communicate with native speakers (Arabs) by paying attention to the theoretical principles of nahwu (nahwu concept) and applied nahwu (applied nahwu).

Résumé :
Beginner table-tennis players require constant real-time feedback while learning the fundamental techniques. However, due to various constraints such as the mentor’s inability to be around all the time, expensive sensors and equipment for sports training, beginners are unable to get the immediate real-time feedback they need during training. Sensors have been widely used to train beginners and novices for various skills development, including psychomotor skills. Sensors enable the collection of multimodal data which can be utilised with machine learning to classify training mistakes, give feedback, and further improve the learning outcomes. In this paper, we introduce the Table Tennis Tutor (T3), a multi-sensor system consisting of a smartphone device with its built-in sensors for collecting motion data and a Microsoft Kinect for tracking body position. We focused on the forehand stroke mistake detection. We collected a dataset recording an experienced table tennis player performing 260 short forehand strokes (correct) and mimicking 250 long forehand strokes (mistake). We analysed and annotated the multimodal data for training a recurrent neural network that classifies correct and incorrect strokes. To investigate the accuracy level of the aforementioned sensors, three combinations were validated in this study: smartphone sensors only, the Kinect only, and both devices combined. The results of the study show that smartphone sensors alone perform sub-par than the Kinect, but similar with better precision together with the Kinect. To further strengthen T3’s potential for training, an expert interview session was held virtually with a table tennis coach to investigate the coach’s perception of having a real-time feedback system to assist beginners during training sessions. The outcome of the interview shows positive expectations and provided more inputs that can be beneficial for the future implementations of the T3.

Résumé :
One of the problems of students' lack of kalam and qiroah abilities is the lack of teaching methods used by coaches. For example, many teachers still use the lecture method in teaching any maharah. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify and provide alternative learning methods, especially for maharah kalam and istima`. This study aims to find out the steps for using the phonetic method in learning maharah istima' and kalam for beginners. This research is a library research using a qualitative descriptive approach. With the Maharah Kalam and Istima` learning phonetic methods for the beginner level, the focus is on repetition and pronunciation of phonemes properly and correctly. The phonetic method begins with practicing distinguishing Arabic phonemes, namely hijaiyah letters, then continues with distinguishing words or mufrodat that are similar in pronunciation. Pronunciation with good makhraj and intonation needs to be continuously guarded so that learning has a high success rate.

Résumé :
This article presents a study of the variation found in the oral production of verbs in L2 French by adult beginners with Swedish as L1. The study deals with the production of the two main forms of regular verbs in spoken French, a short form /parl/ and a long form /parle/, in present-tense and infinitive contexts. Learners at beginner stages use these two forms invariantly in both finite and non-finite contexts. The aim of this study is to investigate the choice of the invariant forms made by the learners. This is done by testing the influence of lexical aspect and input frequency. The investigation is made with concrete data from input sources. The results from both a free production task and an imitation test suggest that input frequency contributes more significantly than lexical aspect, although both factors overlap for most of the studied verbs.

Résumé :
AbstractThis article presents the first study on using a parallel corpus to teach Cantonese, the variety of Chinese spoken in Hong Kong. We evaluated this approach with Mandarin-speaking undergraduate students at the beginner level. Exploiting their knowledge of Mandarin, a closely related language, the students studied Cantonese with authentic material in a Cantonese-Mandarin parallel corpus, transcribed from television programs. They were given a list of Mandarin words that yield a range of possible Cantonese translations, depending on the linguistic context. Leveraging sentence and word alignments in the parallel corpus, the students independently searched for example sentences to discover these translation equivalents. Experimental results showed that, in both the short- and long-term, this data-driven learning approach helped students improve their knowledge of Cantonese vocabulary. These results suggest the potential of applying parallel corpora at even the beginners’ level for other L1-L2 pairs of closely related languages.

Résumé :
The emergence of multi-touch screen tablets has increased the opportunities for mobile learning, as the unique capabilities and affordances of these devices give them an educational advantage over other mobile technologies. Tablets are progressively finding their way into classrooms and transforming modes of learning and teaching. However, research on educational applications of this digital tool, particularly with reference to foreign-/second-language acquisition by young beginner learners, is still limited. In this paper, the use of various tablet applications (apps) to support mobile English-language learning by children as beginners is discussed. The apps are classified into five main categories: communication, content-access, productivity, interactive and storage. The educational affordances of each category are presented and explained, with examples. This typology provides insight into the educational uses of tablet apps for English language learning, and has implications for research in the field of classroom practices and beyond.
