L'obiettivo di questa tesi è seguire le esperienze di vita al tempo dell'emergenza climatica e come, nelle situazioni particolari della città di Milano, si cerca di rispondere ad essa. Per seguire queste risposte in termini empirici abbiamo dato priorità a diversi spazi - tra il 2018 e il 2021 - in cui si sono sperimentate nuove socialità aperte a un'agenzia più che umana: la foresta urbana, l'attivismo climatico e le pratiche di rigenerazione sono state considerate come risposte particolari alle sfide climatiche attuali. La nostra tesi mostra che è necessario osservare le particolarità di queste risposte, senza assumere che ci sia un consenso su come il cambiamento climatico possa essere generato come un problema comune. Le diverse modalità di risposta evidenziano l'esistenza di situazioni problematiche in cui molteplici aspetti della vita collettiva urbana sono messi in discussione e criticati. I conflitti che emergono non possono essere considerati esclusivamente in termini di eccezionalismo umano, in quanto mostrano che esistono modi divergenti di generare questa agenzia più che umana nei progetti e nelle pratiche politiche.
The aim of this thesis is to follow the experiences of living at the time of climate emergence and how, in the particular situations of the city of Milan, one seeks to respond to it. To follow these responses in empirical terms we prioritized different spaces - between 2018 and 2021 - where new socialites were experienced that were open to a more-than-human agency: the urban forest, climate activism and regeneration practices were considered as particular responses to current climate challenges . Our thesis shows that it is necessary to observe the particularities of these responses, without assuming that there is a consensus about how climate change can be generated as a common problem. The different modalities of response highlight the existence of problematic situations where multiple aspects of collective urban life are questioned and criticized. The conflicts that emerge cannot be considered exclusively in terms of human exceptionalism as they show that there exists divergent ways of generating this more-than-human agency in political projects and practices.

This research project was based on the concepts of positive psychology and Appreciative Inquiry as a model to encourage students to become self-motivated lifelong learners. Students were given the opportunity to explore and reflect on their personal strengths and learn ways to excel in their educational careers by using their strengths in their daily lives. Classroom activities focused on positive results and remarks instead of focusing on the negative and poor choices that were made.

Résumé :

This study focuses on the process that individuals who have migrated to Sweden go through when joining the Swedish Democrats (SD), a nationalistic and anti-immigration party. SDs history is filled with Racism and violence, since the parties remodelling in 1988, where the party removed its more extremist and violent grouping, SD have become the third largest political party in Sweden. Through the classic outsider theories of Elias (1999) and Becker (2006) this study is driven to explore a new theoretical view on the process of role and organizational change. By looking at what pushes the individuals away from their former organizational belonging and what pulls them towards SD, this study will try and understand the thought process and decision making of the group, immigrants in SD, around the time before and during their organizational change. As a secondary point to this paper the respondent’s sense of identity and belonging to SD will be studied. How has their change to SD affected their identity as a group and how do other groups affect them when they (SD) are trying to establish their identity. The research behind this paper is based on interviews with individuals that have migrated to Sweden and are public members of the Swedish Democrats.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the members of the woman’s suffrage movement in the United States and Britain looked to soften their hard masculine image given to them by the press and to increase participation in the cause. They found that by including theatrical performances and benefits at meetings, and hosting tea socials afterwards, they could motivate many women to join without alienating or threatening men. This study looks at how tea socials and theatrical performances were used subversively to recruit new members, to debate ideas, and to disseminate information about the cause. Playwrights wrote plays that examined the questions and issues surrounding this movement, and upstart, female-operated theatre groups and social clubs presented these plays to the public, allowing the debate to reach a wider audience. Actresses themselves joined clubs to increase their presence in society, to help out other actresses, and to find political agency.

It is the argument of this dissertation that states become tax havens as a conscious economic development strategy. These states – more properly referred to as "jurisdictions" because some lack the sovereignty of the traditional Westphalian state – do not have the natural resources or the population to pursue more traditional economic development strategies, but they do have the ability to write or implement laws that create a virtual resource: banking secrecy. These jurisdictions are able to carry out this strategy because they tend to be well-governed, stable, and relatively wealthy, making them attractive partners for the international banking, legal, and accounting firms that drive offshore finance, and then for their customers – both individual and corporate – as well. The qualities tax havens possess also enable them to calculate that the benefits they reap from pursuing this strategy outweigh any penalties assessed by anti-tax haven international collective action activities, such as the naming and shaming campaigns of 2000.

An assumption in Cognitive Psychology, which has been challenged in recent years, is that the systems responsible for action and perception work independently of one another. These systems work together during conceptual tasks and research has demonstrated that action knowledge can influence performance even when the task is 'action-irrelevant' (Borghi, 2004; Borghi, Flumini, Natraj & Wheaton, 2012; Creem & Proffitt, 2001; Tucker & Ellis, 1998, 2001). However, participants in such tasks are often only asked to make simple category judgements, such as natural versus man made. The research reported in this thesis has shown that, under certain conditions, participants use action knowledge to make 'complex' category choices in an action-irrelevant task. The experimental work has predominantly used the forced-choice triad task to assess the circumstances under which participants categorise objects based on shared actions. The triads were designed with a target object and two choice objects matching on either shared actions (rifle + water pistol), shared taxonomic relations (rifle + sword), or both (orange + banana). The context in which the objects were presented was also manipulated so that the objects were either presented on a white background (context-lean) or being used by an agent (context-rich). Participants were most likely to select the choice object that shared both a taxonomic and an action demonstrating that action has an 'additive' effect in categorical decisions. Presenting the objects being used by an agent in a functional scenario increased the saliency of the shared actions between the stimuli, and participants were more likely to select the action choice. The subsequent experimental work reported in the thesis sought to eliminate potential confounding variables including perceptual features, object typicality and task instructions. What the experimental work presented here has demonstrated is that action can influence decisions on more complex categories, and judgments of similarity. The research has identified three main circumstances under which knowledge of action becomes influential in the triad task designed for the purpose of this research as follows: (i) when it is presented in conjunction with taxonomic information, (ii) when it is presented with a context, and (iii) when participants are first asked to physically interact with the objects.

This study used Participatory Action Research (PAR) to investigate the facilitators of disability access in local government, with a focus on the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. In 2014, the City of Bunbury adopted a long-term aspirational goal to become the Most Accessible Regional City in Australia (MARCIA), and the findings and recommendations from this study are intended to inform strategic priorities for achieving that goal, including a potential change of corporate approach required to attain MARCIA status. The thesis critically evaluates the historical, cultural and systemic factors that have influenced accessibility and inclusion in the development of Bunbury’s public infrastructure, situating this discussion in the context of national and international disability research. It also draws on literature about deliberative democracy, knowledge partnering and co-design. A defining feature of this study is its methodology. Participatory Action Research seeks to position the researched as researchers and activists, engaged in a concurrent process of inquiring, sharing and influencing. To achieve this aim, eleven people with lived experience of disability were recruited as co-researchers, working alongside the PhD student who adopted the role of PAR facilitator to ‘animate’ and facilitate the process of inquiry. Together, they engaged Informants from the City of Bunbury (elected members, executives, managers and technical officers) in deliberative dialogue about the system of public design. Interviews and group discussions were recorded and transcribed, and analysed using the Framework Analysis method. Informed by an extensive literature review undertaken by the PhD student, the framework was developed collaboratively with the project’s co-researchers. Historically, universal design has been minimally and inconsistently applied by regional cities such as the City of Bunbury in the development of public infrastructure, including buildings, facilities, services, information and events intended for use by the public. The study found five key facilitators of universal design in public infrastructure: documenting and applying benchmarks and safeguards for best practice in universal design, providing training and technical support for staff and contractors, and engaging people with lived experience of disability in co-design. The five facilitators of universal design in local government are presented in this thesis as a model of Universal Public Design, that may be usefully applied in other public design contexts, including other local governments, other tiers of government, and the commercial sector. In keeping with the action research philosophy of Participatory Action Research, and to fulfil the obligations of the ‘industry engagement scholarship’ that supported this study, the preliminary findings and recommendations were presented to Council in a research report in June 2018, and endorsed unanimously for implementation by the City of Bunbury. The thesis concludes by detailing some of the progress that has been made to date by the City, and situates the study in the context of global efforts, especially by the United Nations, to engage ‘neighbourhood’ leaders such as local governments in fulfilling a key objective of the United Nations’ New Urban Agenda – accessible, inclusive and sustainable cities.

This work aims at analyzing the dramatic action and the characters tragic ethos in the trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra, focusing on the protagonist Lavinia Mannon. Our research corpus, which was written by Eugene O Neill and first performed in 1931, is a recreation of Aeschylus trilogy, the Oresteia, which presents a reading of the myth of the House of Atreus, whose line is cursed by acts of hate and vengeance. This study starts by taking into account the myth concept and its relations to Greek tragedy, as long as Freudian psychoanalysis, in the Modern times. The investigation about the concepts of action and ethos is based on Aristotle s Poetics (2005), Hegel s Aesthetics (2004), along with the studies of Raymond Williams (2002) and Sandra Luna (2005, 2008, 2012), as theoretical support. By creating a psychological drama, O Neill goes deeply into the character s psyche, presenting themselves struggling with impulses and passions repressed by their Puritan morality. Lavinia, the modern Electra, faces a personal drama, since she has a sickly love desire for her father, Ezra, is jealous of her mother, Christine, and represses her desire for Adam Brant, Christine s lover. Lavinia accuses her adulteress mother of having murdered Ezra, and seeks vengeance with the help of her brother, Orin, culminating with Christine s suicide. Orin, taken by guilt and remorse for having contributed to his mother s death, also succumbs to suicide. In order to maintain the Mannons secrets, Lavinia, as the last member of the family, seeks punishment for herself, condemned to endure a tormented existence, haunted by her antecessor s ghosts and recluse at her own house.
Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar a ação dramática e o ethos trágico dos personagens na trilogia Mourning Becomes Electra, tendo como foco a protagonista Lavínia Mannon. Escrita pelo dramaturgo norte-americano Eugene O Neill e encenada, pela primeira vez, em 1931, a trilogia escolhida como corpus desta pesquisa constitui-se uma releitura da Oréstia, de Ésquilo, cujo enredo apresenta uma apropriação do mito dos Atridas, família cuja história é marcada por crimes de ódio e vingança. O estudo parte das considerações sobre o conceito de mito e sua relação com a tragédia grega e com a teoria psicanalítica de Freud, na modernidade. A investigação sobre os conceitos de ação e ethos dos personagens tem como suporte teórico a Poética de Aristóteles (2005), a Estética de Hegel (2004), as contribuições de Raymond Williams (2002) e de Sandra Luna (2005, 2008, 2012). Ao elaborar um drama psicológico moderno, O Neill investe na psiqué dos personagens, que se apresentam em luta contra pulsões e desejos, reprimidos em nome da moral puritana. Lavínia, a Electra moderna, enfrenta um drama pessoal, pois nutre um amor doentio pelo pai, Ezra, tem ciúmes da mãe, Christine, e reprime seu desejo pelo amante desta, Adam Brant. Ao saber da morte de Ezra, Lavínia acusa a mãe adúltera de ser a autora do crime e promete vingança com a ajuda de seu irmão Orin, resultando no suicídio de Christine. Orin, tomado pela culpa e remorso por ter contribuído com a morte da mãe, também sucumbe ao suicídio. A fim de resguardar os segredos de sua família, Lavínia, como a última Mannon, busca sua autopunição, condenada a uma existência atormentada, assombrada pelos fantasmas de seus antepassados e enclausurada em sua própria casa.
