Bat boxes are often used to provide supplementary roosting habitats; however, little is known of their impacts on community composition. Data collected from a 25-year box-monitoring and 31-year harp trapping case study provides preliminary evidence that the installation of boxes may have contributed to one species, Gould’s wattled bat (Chalinolobus gouldii), dominating the bat community of a periurban park in Melbourne. This highlights the need for systematic monitoring and empirical assessment of conservation-focused bat box programs.

Bat boxes are frequently used as conservation and habitat-offset measures, yet their effectiveness is equivocal, particularly in Australia. Boxes used in Australia are largely voluminous-type boxes with Chalinolobus gouldii (Gould’s wattled bat) frequently dominating their use. We tested multichambered boxes comprising fissure-type cavities made from either plywood (~20000cm3) or woodcement (~7400cm3). We investigated whether occupancy was influenced by box colour (white boxes facing morning sun versus black boxes facing afternoon sun), box material/size, chamber width (15mm versus 20mm) and box host (tree versus pole). Boxes were monitored over 1.8 years. Overall, 245 bat observations were recorded. Boxes were frequently used (15% of 1088 box checks) by Nyctophilus geoffroyi (lesser long-eared bat), a species uncommonly reported to use boxes, which used 50 of the 64 boxes (78%), including for maternity roosting (n=6). In comparison, C. gouldii was rarely detected (1% of box checks). Two other species were also found in boxes at low frequencies. Modelling showed a preference by N. geoffroyi for black boxes, the larger plywood box and boxes installed on poles. Fissure-type boxes appear to meet the roost requirements of N. geoffroyi but not that of C. gouldii, the species principally detected in voluminous-type boxes and postulated to gain a competitive advantage. The black woodcement box was the second most frequently used design, demonstrating that this long-lasting box material can be a suitable alternative to the less durable plywood material. Given that just one species commonly used boxes, there is a need for further research on box designs.

Bat boxes are commonly used as a conservation tool. Detailed knowledge on the influence of box elements on microclimate is lacking, despite eco-physiological implications for bats. Summer and winter box temperature and relative humidity patterns were studied in narrow multi-chambered plywood and wood-cement boxes in eastern Australia. Box exteriors were black or white and plywood boxes comprised vents. Relative humidity was higher in white boxes than black boxes and box colour, construction material, chamber sequence and vents influenced temperatures. Maximum box temperature differences between designs varied by up to 9.0 °C in summer and 8.5 °C in winter. The black plywood box consistently recorded the warmest temperatures. This design comprised a temperature gradient between chambers and within the front chamber (influenced by vent). During the 32-day summer sampling period, the front chamber rarely recorded temperatures over 40.0 °C (postulated upper thermal tolerance limit of bats), while the third and fourth chamber never reached this threshold. At the study site, the tested black boxes are considered most thermally suitable for bats during average summer conditions. However, during temperature extremes black boxes likely become too hot. Wood-cement, a durable material not previously tested in Australia should be considered as an alternative construction material.

Regulation of blood flow depends on changes in the sum of arterial (Ra) and venous (Rv) resistances, whereas regulation of capillary pressure (Pc) depends on the ratio of Rv to Ra. If the myogenic response of the arterial system (i.e., delta Ra) is the primary mechanism for controlling pressure and flow when perfusion pressure is lowered, then Pc and total flow should be regulated to the same degree under these conditions. This hypothesis was tested by making direct measurements of Pc and flow in skin and skeletal muscle in the wings of unanesthetized bats. The box method was used to reduce perfusion pressure to the wing. Pressures were measured with a servo-null system; flows were computed from measurements of vascular diameters and red cell velocities using intravital microscopy. All branching orders of arterioles dilated significantly during decreases in box pressure (Pb). For 0 less than Pb less than or equal to -30 mmHg, total flow (1st-order arteriolar flow) remained nearly constant, whereas Pc was "regulated" only approximately 60%. These results cannot be explained by changes in arteriolar resistance alone and suggest that changes in Rv may be important. The possible consequences of flow redistribution, capillary recruitment, and micropressure sampling procedures are discussed in relationship to local regulation of capillary pressure and flow.

The responses of three sequential branching orders of arterioles in the bat wing to rapid and slow changes in transmural pressure were studied. Arterial and venous pressures to the wing were elevated simultaneously by pressurizing a box containing the body of the animal, while the wing was exposed to atmospheric pressure. Box pressure was elevated from 0 to +48 mmHg at two rates: 24 and 0.6 mmHg/s. During this time, continuous recordings of hydrostatic pressure and diameter were made in single arterioles using intravital microscopic techniques. Second-order arterioles and arcuate arterioles from skin and skeletal muscle constricted in response to elevated transmural pressure but did not show an enhanced response to rapid pressure changes. There was a trend for terminal arterioles to show a transient peak constriction during rapid stretch, but this response was always associated with a biphasic change in arteriolar pressure. These results suggest that the transient arteriolar resistance changes associated with rapid transmural pressure increases in previous experiments may be primarily a result of transient pressure changes in small arterioles. We find no evidence that arterioles in this preparation exhibit a rate-sensitive component to their myogenic response.

On 28 January 2020, three living individuals of the Leisler’s bat, Nyctalus leisleri, were found in a shed in Malaucène, southern France (44°11’34”N, 05°07’26”E). Two of these bats had bands with the inscription CESON.ORG used in the Czech Republic since 2019. The whole ring code was detected in one case (CZ03313), in a female captured and banded in a bat-box near Bečov nad Teplou, western Bohemia, Czech Republic (50°05’27”N, 12°51’38”E) on 9 September 2019, 878 km away from Malaucène. This is the first case of a long distance migration in the population of Nyctalus leisleri of the Czech Republic. This observation also gives a direct evidence of a flight during the maximum 141 days in late summer or autumn from the central or northeastern Europe to the southwestern parts of the continent.

This thesis centers on the Ban the Box movement, a study on its affects within the greater-Tucson area, interviews of Human Resources Directors, a synthesis of what is happening in Arizona, and a discussion of its importance. Ban the Box is a movement that promotes the elimination of “the box” that forces anyone with a criminal background to check on applications for jobs, housing, education, etc. The movement has steadily increased in both the public and private sector as companies like Target and Wal-Mart have voluntarily eliminated the box from their initial application forms. This is important because the United States crime rates are increasing and thus the box affects more and more people every day. In the case study, it became clear that various jurisdictions in Arizona have extremely varied responses to the movement, though each Human Resources professional seemed to have a similar opinion. I learned that this topic is not as cut and dry as it originally seems. To make a complete law that is commonly accepted by all, a lot of research and support from all parties involved will be necessary. For future studies done on Ban the Box, it is important to give interviewees plenty of time to prepare and to do varied research before. The thesis concludes with a summation of the material discussed and the author’s opinion shining through.

På den svenska marknaden står bag-in-box-vin för över 50 procent av allt vin som säljs och Sverige är det land där bag-in-boxen fått starkast fäste i världen (Fremin, 2012). Det gör att bag-in-box-förpackningen är en stor och betydelsefull produkt för vintillverkare och att ha kunskap om säljande design är viktigt för grafiska formgivare samt övriga involverade företag. Den föreliggande studiens syfte var att undersöka vilka designfaktorer på bagin- box-förpackningar som påverkar konsumenternas val av vin i Sverige. Studien innefattade en visuell kartläggning som ämnade ge en överblick av utbudet på ett Systembolag. Detta genomfördes för att skapa en grund till den webbaserade enkätundersökningen som genomfördes under våren 2015. Resultaten visade att majoriteten av respondenterna valde vin baserat på förpackningens utseende och ansåg att de påverkades främst av färg, typsnitt, illustrationer och varumärken. Resultaten visade också att ju högre vinkunskap konsumenterna hade desto mindre påverkade designen deras val. Kvinnor och män hade generellt olika åsikter angående hur stor påverkan de olika designfaktorerna hade vid valet av bag-in-box-vin. Denna studie är endast ett avstamp till ett ämne som innefattar många påverkande faktorer. Det betyder att mer forskning krävs inom ämnet innan helt sanningsenliga resultat kan fastställas.
In the Swedish market the bag-in-box wine stands for over 50 percent of all wine that sells and Sweden is the country where the bag-in-box have the strongest hold in the world (Fremin, 2012). This makes bag-in-box packaging a major and significant product for winemakers. Therefore having knowledge about selling design is important for graphic designers and other involved companies. This study included a visual content analysis of the bag-in-box wine in a liquor store in Sweden in order to get an overview of the supply. With the results, a web-based survey was created and implemented in the spring of 2015. The results showed that the majority of the respondents chose the wine based on the appearance of the package and felt that they were mainly effected by the colour, font, illustrations and brand. Consumers with higher knowledge about wine were less effected by the design in their choice of wine. Women and men had generally different opinions about how much impact the different design factors had in the choice of bag-in-box wine. This study is only a starting point for a subject that includes many influencing factors. Further research is therefore needed before completely truthful results can be established.

This report describes the process of developing a new package for food-related liquids. The assignment is done on behalf of the design and branding agency Motherland and is a Bachelor of Science degree in Innovation and Design at Karlstad University. The client wants to find a new design for packaging where the end product is similar to the Bag-in- box concept. The Bag-in-box concept is good in many ways, with its block-shaped design almost pallet optimised, it has a simple construction, less environmental impact than glass, aluminum and PET bottles and less expensive to produce. In spite of its popularity in Sweden and well as the rest of the world, the pre-study shows that there are many users who think that the concept has its flaws. Common users claim the package does not reflect the contents and is difficult to empty and disassemble. The package can only be used standing at the edge of the table. The goal of this product development project is to apply the designprocess to find one or more prototypes with new design which meets the demands of the consumers. The project is limited to finding a new solution on the outer packaging and do not take into account the dosing function. The product must be suited for storage and transport to meet the requirements of sustainable development. The feasibility study gave insight and knowledge of the output concept, the facts surrounding a number of food related liquids, information about effective tools for idea development, sustainable development and the approach to manufacture an environmentally friendly packaging. Facts gathered through literature studies, study, survey, form studies, component analysis and visits knowledgeable in relevant areas. The study resulted in a specification that was used as a guide in the product development process. The project resulted in two prototypes with the same engineering design and volume but with different dimensions on height and width. They have a new design and a new mindset when it comes drain but have the same final function as the starting product, to protect the fluid, contain fluid, moving liquids, and dosing liquid. They have an opening and resealable lid that allows the user to control the content and facilitates proper recycling. It enables the packaging to be easily taken out and thus simplify the emptying of all content. Sketching and modeling has been of great help in the work and its results.
Denna rapport beskriver ett examensarbete där två prototyper på ytterförpackning för livsmedelsrelaterade vätskor är slutresultatet. Uppdraget sker i samarbete med design- och varumärkesbyrån Motherland och är ett examensarbete på högskoleingenjörsprogrammet i innovationsteknik och design på Karlstads universitet. Uppdragsgivaren vill ta fram en ny design på förpackning för vätskor där utgångsprodukten är Bag-in-box konceptet. Utgångsprodukten är bra i många avseenden, den är med sin blockformade konstruktion nästintill logistisk optimal för transport och lagring, har en enkel konstruktion, ger mindre negativ miljöpåverkan än både glas-, aluminium- och PET-flaskor och är billig att producera. Trots sin popularitet i så väl Sverige som övriga världen, visar förstudien att det är många brukare som anser att utgångsprodukten har sina brister. Många anser att förpackningen inte är tilltalande designmässigt, det är svårt att tömma på allt innehåll och att det är komplicerat då produkten skall elimineras. Att det endast doseras vid en bordskant är en annan nackdel. Målet med projektet är att med utgångspunkt i designprocessen gestalta och ge förslag på en eller flera prototyper på ytterförpackning där ny form och design står i fokus. Produkten måste vara lager och transportanpassad så att den tillgodoser krav på hållbar utveckling. Hänsyn skall tas till användarnas krav så att den/de nya produkterna tillgodoser brister hos utgångsprodukten. Förstudien gav insikt och kunskap om utgångskonceptet, fakta kring ett antal livsmedelsrelaterade vätskor, information om effektiva verktyg för idéutveckling, hållbar utveckling och tillvägagångssätt för tillverkning av en miljöanpassad förpackning. Fakta samlades in genom litteraturstudier, studiebesök, enkätundersökning, formstudier, komponentanalys och besök hos kunniga på relevanta områden. Förstudien resulterade i en kravspecifikation som användes som vägledning i produktutvecklingensprocessen. Projektet resulterade i två prototyper med samma konstruktionsdesign och volym men med olika dimensioner på höjd och bredd. De har en ny design och ett nytt tänk när det gäller utpumpningsfunktion dock har den samma slutfunktion som utgångsprodukten, skydda vätska, innehålla vätska, förflytta vätska och dosera vätska. De har ett öppnings- och återförslutningsbart lock som möjliggör för brukaren att kontrollera innehållet och underlättar för rätt källsortering. Lösningen gör att innerförpackningen lätt kan tas ur och på så sätt förenkla vid tömning av allt innehåll. Skissande och modellering har varit till stor hjälp i arbetet och framtagandet av slutresultatet.

The Dirac equation is a relativistic wave equation and was the first equation to capture spin in relativistic quantum mechanics. Here, the Dirac equation will be derived and solved for a particle in a spherical box potential. Comparisons to the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation as well as to a relativistically corrected Schrödinger equation will be made. Applications of the Dirac equation, such as the Bogoliubov model, are examined and discussed and it is validated that the Dirac equation can provide knowledge about elementary particles.
Dirac-ekvationen är en relativistisk vågekvation och var den första ekvationen att inkludera spinn i relativistisk kvantmekanik. I vår rapport kommer Dirac-ekvationen att härledas och lösas för en partikel i en sfärisk lådpotential. Den kommer sedan att jämföras med den icke-relativistiska Schrödinger-ekvationen samt en relativistiskt korrigerad Schrödinger-ekvation. Några av Dirac-ekvationens användningsområden, såsom för Bogoliubovs modell, kommer att undersökas och diskuteras och det faktum att Diracekvationen kan ge oss information om hur elementära partiklar fungerar valideras.

Em casos de carcinoma gástrico, para contribuir ao conhecimento do processo de carcinogênese: Objetivo: Estudar a expressão das proteínas da família Bcl-2 (BcI-2, Bcl-xl, Bak, Bad, Bax). Correlacionar a expressão destas proteínas com 0 índice apoptótico mediante a expressão da proteína Caspase 3 clivada, com 0 índice mit6tico mediante a expressão da proteína Ki-67 e com a expressão da proteína p53. Método: Técnica de arranjo em matriz de amostras teciduais (TMA): em 87 amostras de adenocarcinomas gástricos (grupo teste) e de mucosa gástrica não tumoral (grupo controle) foi avaliada a imuno-expressão das proteínas da família BcI-2 (BeI-2, Bcl-xl, Bak, Bad, Bax), da proteína p53, da proteína caspase 3 e da proteína Ki-67. Resultados: Todas as proteínas examinadas foram observadas nos adenocarcinomas e mucosa não tumoral, porem com diferenças de expressão em relação à porcentagem de positividade e intensidade. Observamos: i) Houve associação entre 0 tamanho do tumor e a proteína p53. ii) Houve associação da proteína Bad no adenocarcinoma com a idade dos pacientes. iii) Associação das proteínas Bax, Bad e Ki-67 com 0 adenocarcinoma de tipo intestinal. iv) As proteínas Bcl-xl, Bak, Bad, p53 e Ki-67 apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre a imuno-expressão no tumor e na mucosa não tumoral. v) Associação das proteínas Bax, Bak e Bad na mucosa não tumoral. vi) Não houve correlação da imunoexpressão das proteínas com a sobrevida dos pacientes. Conclusão: A expressão aumentada da proteína Bcl-xl nos adenocarcinomas, com evidente diferença de expressão entre 0 grupo teste e 0 grupo controle, esta relacionada com 0 efeito anti-apoptótico da proteína. A expressão reduzida das proteínas Bak e Bad e a expressão aumentada das proteínas p53 e Ki-67 nos adenocarcinomas demonstram 0 desequilíbrio entre morte e proliferação celular, permitindo 0 crescimento descontrolado das células neoplásicas.
Purpose: To study the immunoexpression of Bcl-2 family proteins (Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, Bax, Bak, Bad) and to evaluate the correlation between the immunoexpression of these proteins with the cleaved caspases 3, Ki-67 and p53 immuno-expression. Methods: A TMA paraffin block was constructed with gastric carcinoma tissue (test group) and normal gastric adjoining mucosa (control group) of 87 patients. The TMA block was submitted to immunohistochemistry for Bcl-2, Bcl-xl, Bax, Bak, Bad, p53 and-cleaved Caspase 3. Results: All studied proteins were present in tumor and normal gastric adjoining mucosa, but with different intensity and amount of positive cells. i) There was an association between tumor size and p53 expression. ii) association between Bad expression in the tumor and patient’s age. iii) Intestinal type adenocarcinoma was positively correlated with the expression of Bax, Bad and Ki-67. iv) The protein Bcl-xl, Bak, Bad, p53 and Ki-67 showed statistically significant differences between the immuno-expression in tumor and normal gastric adjoining mucosa. v) There was an association between the proteins Bax, Bak and Bad expression in the normal gastric adjoining mucosa. vi) No correlation between patient’s survival rates and the expression of the proteins was observed. Conclusions: The higher expression of Bcl-xl protein in adenocarcinoma, the difference of Bcl-xl expression between test group and control group, might be related with the anti-apoptotic effect of this protein. The lower expression of Bak and Bad and the increased expression of p53 protein and Ki-67 protein in adenocarcinomas demonstrate the imbalance between death and cellular proliferation, which allows the uncontrolled tumor cell proliferation.

Resumo: Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho de um sistema asséptico piloto para a produção de leite UHT (Ultra Hight-Temperature), com capacidade de 1.000 L/h, em embalagens flexíveis institucionais do tipo Bag-in-box (BIB). As embalagens estudadas eram compostas de um filme de polietileno de baixa densidade (PEBD) e um filme de polietileno tereftalato metalizado (PETmet), com volume de 2.000 mL, desenvolvido especialmente para o envase asséptico de produtos lácteos. Leite cru refrigerado tipo A foi utilizado como matéria-prima. O envase do leite UHT foi realizado através de uma dosadeira semi-automática dentro de uma Sala Limpa ISO posicionada sobre o bocal de enchimento das embalagens. O sistema foi avaliado através da identificação e monitoramento de pontos de controle do processo, testes de esterilidade comercial, análises sensorial e físico-química do produto, bem como avaliações da embalagem. O desempenho das embalagens BIB foi avaliado através de ensaios de caracterização, integridade do sistema e estudos de estabilidade microbiana e testes de efetividade de esterilização. As embalagens foram esterilizadas com o uso de radiação ionizante (gama), com dose de 15 kGy. Os ensaios foram conduzidos através da produção de 4 lotes experimentais de leite UHT, obtido em trocador de calor a placas (140 °C por 5 s). A taxa de defeito encontrada nos testes de esterilidade comercial variou entre 0 e 6,7%, sendo que a principal causa de defeitos foi associada aos problemas inerentes a operacionalidade da linha, como falhas nas vedações das junções de tubulações e bombas centrífugas. Os resultados da avaliação dos pontos de controle do processo e embalagem indicaram um bom desempenho do sistema, justificado pela ausência de microorganismos viáveis. O leite UHT acondicionado nas embalagens BIB teve sua vida de prateleira estimada em até 27 semanas de estocagem, valor este muito superior quando comparado às amostras controle de leite UHT comercial, acondicionado em embalagens laminadas cartonadas, que teve sua vida de prateleira estimada em 19 semanas. A diferença de estabilidade físico-química, microbiológica e sensorial entre as amostras processadas e a comercial foi associada às propriedades de barreira das estruturas das embalagens à luz e ao oxigênio, bem como pela qualidade da matéria-prima utilizada. O sistema asséptico piloto avaliado correspondeu às expectativas de desempenho e atendeu aos requisitos estabelecidos pelo Codex Alimentarius. Concluiu-se que o sistema apresenta potencial para utilização por indústrias de laticínios visando atender o mercado institucional de leite longa vida
Abstract: The aim of this research was to evaluate the performance of an aseptic pilot system for the production of Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk, with 1.000 L/h capacity, filled in flexible institutional packages Bag-in-box (BIB) type. The BIB packages were constructed with one layer of low density polyethylene film (LDPE) and another one of metalized polyethylene terephthalate film (PETmet), with 2.000 mL capacity, specially developed for the aseptic filling of dairy products. Type-A milk was used as raw material and the UHT milk filling was made by a semiautomatic machine located inside a ISO Clean room. The system was evaluated by the identification and monitoring of the control points during the process and also by commercial sterility tests, sensorial and physical-chemistry analysis and packages evaluations. The BIB packages were sterilized by gamma radiation with minimum doses of 15 kGy. The assays were conducted by the production of 4 experimental batches processed in a plate heat exchanger (140 °C/5 s). The defect rates founded were between 0 and 6.7% and these values can be explained by problems linked to the pilot plant operation, like failures in the connections of pipes and centrifugal pumps. The results of the control points evaluation and also BIB packages showed a good performance of the entire process, justified by the absence of viable microorganisms. The milk filled in BIB packages targeted until 27 weeks of shelf life, a superior value when it was compared to the commercial UHT samples, which targeted just 19 weeks. The difference of physical-chemistry, microbiology and sensory stability between the processed samples and the commercial one was associated to the oxygen and light barriers properties and also to the raw milk quality used during the processes. The pilot aseptic system evaluated attended to the Codex Alimentarius requirements and it could be concluded that the system showed potential for application in dairy industry in view of the long life milk institutional market

<p>In order to complete the connection between the A15 and A12 highways in the Dutch region Gelderland, a bridge over the river ‘Pannerdensch Kanaal’ will be constructed. The main bridge is erected using the balanced cantilever construction method and designed as a continuous three- span box girder with varying height at a total length of 340 m. The superstructure consists of a longitudinally and transversally post-tensioned concrete deck with a maximum span length of 170 m and an approximate width of 28 m. Furthermore, the structure contains a bicycle and a pedestrian steel bridge, which are suspended below/beside the deck, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to cross the river and the Natura 2000 protected area. Additionally the bridge complex integrates ecological demands, such as swallow nests and bat roosts.</p>

Abstract Given a feature-based CAD model of a part’s geometry, the problem is to select the shape and size of bar stock from which the part can be made. It is assumed that standard stock shapes and sizes available in the workshop varies, so the task is to select the best suited stock geometry and cut-off length from the available inventory. Automatic workpiece selection involves the interrogation of a part database to determine the part’s shape characteristics, and to match the shape with available geometries. The requirements of a system to perform this task are presented along with several methods of determining the appropriate shape — GT coding, shrinking box, silhouette projection, point network, principal machining directions, and face extension. None of these methods is sufficiently robust by itself, so a combination of methods is required. Based on this hybrid technique, a system to perform automatic workpiece selection was designed and implemented. A coding scheme is used to select the workpiece shape, based on primary features and their relationships. Once the shape is selected, it is matched with available workpiece shapes. The workpiece is then sized using a version of the bounding box method.

Pressure compensated vane pumps are well suited to applications such as automatic transmissions which require a low-cost, compact solution to provide the hydraulic power required for clutch control as well as the lubrication and cooling functions. This paper presents a black-box model of the series of valves providing the flowrate to control the motion of the pivoting cam in a variable displacement vane pump from an automatic transmission application. This series of valves consists of a pressure-reducing valve followed by a solenoid-operated valve that generates a pilot pressure acting on the main pressure regulator valve to adjust the commanded pump outlet pressure setting. Valves taken from a transmission control block were integrated into a custom unit and installed on a test rig with a modified vane pump. Measurements previously collected on this test rig were used to validate a lumped-parameter vane pump model and provide data containing the input-output relationships of the pressure compensation system valves. An analysis of the black-box description of this control system identifies limitations to the achievable system performance. This analysis reveals that the low-cost solenoid-operated valve and the arrangement of the valves within the control circuit both contribute to a controllable bandwidth less than 2Hz. Finally, the paper presents an alternate control system design capable of improved system performance.

High fidelity models that balance accuracy and computation load are essential for real-time model-based control of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines. Grey-box modeling offers an effective technique to obtain desirable HCCI control models. In this paper, a physical HCCI engine model is combined with two feed-forward artificial neural networks models to form a serial architecture grey-box model. The resulting model can predict three major HCCI engine control outputs including combustion phasing, Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP), and exhaust gas temperature (Texh). The grey-box model is trained and validated with the steady-state and transient experimental data for a large range of HCCI operating conditions. The results indicate the grey-box model significantly improves the predictions from the physical model. For 234 HCCI conditions tested, the grey-box model predicts combustion phasing, IMEP, and Texh with an average error less than 1 crank angle degree, 0.2 bar, and 6 °C respectively. The grey-box model is computationally efficient and it can be used for real-time control application of HCCI engines.

This paper presents an application of the manufacturing constraint modeling (MCM) method we previously developed, to composite molding processes. A statistical model to predict resin filling time for given part geometry and inlet location is constructed through massive process simulations and data mining. A bitmap representation is adopted to generate massive samples of part geometries within a bounding box. The model is trained by the statistical regression based on the abstract features inspired by the underlying physics of the filling process, which dramatically enhances the model generalizability compared to the conventional surrogate models. The model is tested by in-the-bag samples and out-of-bag samples with a different inlet gate location and a different bounding box. The result shows the manufacturing constraint model trained by the knowledge-inspired feature representation achieves comparable in-the-bag training errors as the surrogate models, and remarkably better out-of-bag testing results. The proposed manufacturing constraint model will be useful to enhance the manufacturability of composite structures during manual design iterations as well as computer-based optimization.

This evaluation considers the storage of plutonium materials in 9975 shipping packages at the Savannah River Site (SRS) K-Area Complex (KAC). The materials are packaged in a can – bag – can configuration where the outer can is a screw lid filtered can and the inner can is a slip lid filtered can (filters for both cans are located in the can lid). The inner slip lid can is secured using polyvinyl chloride tape. A filtered plasticized polyvinyl chloride (pPVC) bag is used to bag out the slip lid can from the glove box where the plutonium oxide is packaged. The filtered bag and slip lid can are placed into the outer screw lid can outside the glove box. This can – bag – can configuration is packaged into a 9975 shipping package for storage. An empty “dummy” tin plated carbon steel can (with a hole in the lid) is packaged on top of the screw lid can inside the 9975 Primary Containment Vessel (PCV). The threshold heat generation such that the thermal decomposition of the pPVC bag is precluded is 7 Watts. In addition, the maximum 9975 PCV pressure is computed for normal conditions of storage of the 9975 shipping package in K-Area Complex (KAC).

Fruit deterioration is a consequence of a genetically-determined fruit ripening and senescence programs, in which developmental factors lead to a climacteric rise of ethylene production in ethylene-sensitive fruits such as tomato and banana. Breeding of tomato with extended fruit shelf life involves the incorporation of a mutation in RIN, a MADS-box transcription factor participating in developmental control signalling of ripening. The RIN mode of action is not fully understood, and it may be predicted to interact with other MADS-box genes to execute its effects. The overall goal of this study was to demonstrate conservation of ripening control functions between banana and tomato and thus, the potential to genetically extend shelf-life in banana based on tools developed in tomato. The specific objectives were: 1. To increase the collection of potential RIN-like genes from banana; 2. To verify their action as developmental regulators; 3. To elucidate MADS-box gene mode of action in ripening control; 4. To create transgenic banana plants that express low levels of endogenous Le-RIN- like, MaMADS- gene(s). We have conducted experiments in banana as well as in tomato. In tomato we have carried out the transformation of the tomato rin mutant with the MaMADS1 and MaMADS2 banana genes. We have also developed a number of domain swap constructs to functionally examine the ripening-specific aspects of the RIN gene. Our results show the RIN-C terminal region is essential for the gene to function in the ripening signalling pathway. We have further explored the tomato genome databases and recovered an additional MADS-box gene necessary for fruit ripening. This gene has been previously termed TAGL1 but has not been functionally characterized in transgenic plants. TAGL1 is induced during ripening and we have shown via RNAi repression that it is necessary for both fleshy fruit expansion and subsequent ripening. In banana we have cloned the full length of six MaMADS box genes from banana and determined their spatial and temporal expression patterns. We have created antibodies to MaMADS2 and initiated ChI assay. We have created four types of transgenic banana plants designed to reduce the levels of two of the MaMADS box genes. Our results show that the MaMADS-box genes expression in banana is dynamically changing after harvest and most of them are induced at the onset of the climacteric peak. Most likely, different MaMADS box genes are active in the pulp and peel and they are differently affected by ethylene. Only the MaMADS2 box gene expression is not affected by ethylene indicating that this gene might act upstream to the ethylene response pathway. The complementation analysis in tomato revealed that neither MaMADS1 nor MaMADS2 complement the rin mutation suggesting that they have functionally diverged sufficiently to not be able to interact in the context of the tomato ripening regulatory machinery. The developmental signalling pathways controlling ripening in banana and tomato are not identical and/or have diverged through evolution. Nevertheless, at least the genes MaMADS1 and MaMADS2 constitute part of the developmental control of ripening in banana, since transgenic banana plants with reduced levels of these genes are delayed in ripening. The detailed effect on peel and pulp, of these transgenic plants is underway. So far, these transgenic bananas can respond to exogenous ethylene, and they seem to ripen normally. The response to ethylene suggest that in banana the developmental pathway of ripening is different than that in tomato, because rin tomatoes do not ripen in response to exogenous ethylene, although they harbor the ethylene response capability This study has a major contribution both in scientific and agricultural aspects. Scientifically, it establishes the role of MaMADS box genes in a different crop-the banana. The developmental ripening pathway in banana is similar, but yet different from that of the model plant tomato and one of the major differences is related to ethylene effect on this pathway in banana. In addition, we have shown that different components of the MaMADS-box genes are employed in peel and pulp. The transgenic banana plants created can help to further study the ripening control in banana. An important and practical outcome of this project is that we have created several banana transgenic plants with fruit of extended shelf life. These bananas clearly demonstrate the potential of MaMADS gene control for extending shelf-life, enhancing fruit quality, increasing yield in export systems and for improving food security in areas where Musaspecies are staple food crops.
