In the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry, the pressure to accelerate the deployment of 5G technology has created a new competitive environment for businesses. This technology not only enables lower latency, but also higher number of connected devices, higher amounts of shared data, and faster. The growing demand from customers is pressuring every stage of the supply chain to become more efficient. In this industry, achieving a short time-tomarket is vital to stay ahead of competitors and position the company as a trend-setter in the eyes of customers. Therefore, it has become necessary to overall shorten lead times and deliver products in a faster way. This study was performed in collaboration with Ericsson AB, more specifically in the Ericsson Outbound Supply EMEA. Recent escalations from customers have shown that Ericsson’s ways of working to handle customer purchase orders are not being efficient. In many cases, it is taking longer to process the order than the lead times agreed on the contract with the customer. As a result, this study investigates how automation technologies can improve end-to-end order flows, how these can affect Ericsson as an organisation and its workforce, as well as which factors must be taken into consideration when implementing automation. In order to support the investigation, an analysis of the issues most frequently affecting hardware deliveries to customers was also conducted through the Spiderweb program. The latter is an internal improvement initiative of Ericsson Supply, focused on improving Ericsson’s order handling flows for the Market Area Europe and Latin America. The study was based on the following research questions: How can automation technologies help to improve Supply’s performance? How does automation impact the company as an organisation, its culture and workforce? How can the improvement methodology followed in the Spiderweb drive automation discoveries? Qualitative data was primarily collected through meetings with Spiderweb program drivers and 11 interviews held with different stakeholders at Ericsson Supply. Conclusively, this study indicates that the four critical factors that will require further developments for automation in Supply to become a reality are: its culture; the establishment of a data-driven organisation; the coordination of different processes and communication between dependent stakeholders; and the technical implementation of automation technology and other tools used locally. It is also concluded that the full potential of automation will only be realised if accompanied by a corresponding development of the workforce, and a clear communication of the strategy from top management. Lastly, the main recommendation to Supply regards the need to standardise order handling processes and simplify order flows, prior to any automation implementation in Supply.
Inom informations- och kommunikationsteknologinäringen (IKT) har trycket för att påskynda implementeringen av 5G-teknik skapat en ny konkurrensmiljö för företagen. Denna teknik möjliggör inte bara lägre latens, utan också större antal anslutna enheter, större mängder delad data och snabbare. Den växande efterfrågan från kunderna pressar varje steg i leveranskedjan att bli effektivare. Det senare är ett internt förbättringsinitiativ från Ericsson Supply, fokuserat på att förbättra Ericssons orderhanteringsflöden för marknadsområdet Europa och Latinamerika. Studien baserades på följande forskningsfrågor: Hur kan automatiseringsteknologier bidra till att förbättra Supply’s prestanda? Hur påverkar automatisering företaget som organisation, dess kultur och arbetskraft? Hur kan förbättringsmetodiken följas i Spiderweb-enhetens automatiseringsupptäckter? Kvalitativ data samlades främst genom möten med Spiderwebprogramdrivare och 11 intervjuer med olika intressenter på Ericsson Supply. Sammanfattningsvis indikerar denna studie att de fyra kritiska faktorerna som kommer att kräva ytterligare utveckling för att automatisering i Supply ska bli verklighet är: dess kultur; inrättande av en datadriven organisation; samordning av olika processer och kommunikation mellan beroende intressenter; och teknisk implementering av automatiseringsteknologi och andra verktyg som används lokalt. Det dras också slutsatsen att automatiseringspotentialen fullt ut kommer att realiseras om den åtföljs av en motsvarande utveckling av arbetskraften och en tydlig kommunikation av strategin från toppledningen. Slutligen beaktar huvudrekommendationen till Supply behovet av att standardisera orderhanteringsprocesser och förenkla orderflöden innan automatiseringsimplementering i Supply startar.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mobile phone networks form an integral part of economic and social development globally. Mobile phones have become an everyday part of life and it is hard to imagine a competitive economy without the availability of mobile communications. Emerging markets benefit most from the implementation of mobile technology and growth trends are outperforming earlier predictions. The most popular and sustainable payment model used by mobile phone networks in emerging markets is the pre paid mechanism used for the distribution of airtime. This mechanism brings about unique challenges for networks in emerging markets. In this thesis the importance of the mobile phone network pre paid value channel is introduced through an analysis of pre paid revenue. A brief introduction is given to the systems and products that contribute to the functioning of the pre paid value channel. The revenue generation process is described with regards to the pre paid sector of the market and an in-depth explanation of the importance of deferred revenue is given, how it is recorded and what role it fulfils in the generation of revenue. The complexity of the network environment, both technical and operational makes the use of a business automation and support system (BSS) a necessary tool for effective execution of tasks and processes within the network environment. These systems record information from a wide spectrum of available technical network resources and use this information to automate the flow of network products. The use of such a system for the calculation of deferred revenue is suggested. Saaty‟s Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) algorithm and the Elimination and Choice Expressing Reality (ELECTRE) method are used to compare the newly proposed method for the calculation of deferred revenue using a BSS. Using Saaty's algorithm to estimate the effectiveness of deferred revenue as reported through the use of a BSS yields favourable results for the proposed method. This helps to bridge the gap in the poorly researched mobile telecommunications industry. ELECTRE is used to substantiate the findings of the model using AHP and meaningful tests are done to motivate correctness and accuracy of the results obtained throughout. Most importantly, the findings were shared with academic and industry experts, adding meaningful resemblance to the goals set out to achieve.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Mobiele foon netwerke is wêreldwyd 'n onlosmaakbare deel van ekonomiese en sosiale ontwikkeling. Mobiele fone is deel van ons alledaagse lewe en dit is moeilik om 'n kompeterende ekonomie te bedink sonder die beskikbaarheid van mobiele kommunikasie. Ontluikende markte trek die meeste voordeel uit die implementering van mobiele tegnologie en groeitendense vertoon beter as wat vroeër voorspel is. Die mees gewilde en volhoubare betaalmetode wat deur mobiele foon netwerke in ontluikende markte gebruik word, is die voorafbetalingsmeganisme wat vir die verspreiding van lugtyd gebruik word. Hierdie meganisme bring unieke uitdagings vorendag in ontluikende markte. Die tesis beskryf die belangrikheid van die mobiele foon netwerk voorafbetalingswaardekanaal deur 'n analise te maak van vooruitbetalingsinkomste. 'n Kort oorsig oor die sisteme en produkte wat bydra tot die funksionering van die vooruitbetalingswaardekanaal word verskaf. 'n Beskrywing van die inkomste-genereringsproses vir die vooruitbetaling-sektor van die mark word verskaf en 'n in-diepte verduideliking van die belangrikheid van uitgestelde inkomste, hoe dit vasgelê word en watter rol dit speel in die generering van inkomste word verduidelik. Dit vul 'n leemte in die swak nagevorsde mobiele telekommunikasie industrie. ELECTRE word gebruik om die bevindinge van die AHP-model te substansieer en betekenisvolle toetse word deurentyd gedoen om die korrektheid en akkuraatheid van die resultate te motiveer. Die belangrikste aspek van die navorsing is dat die bevindinge gedeel is met kenners binne die akademie sowel as die industrie, wat nou aansluit by die doelstellings wat aanvanklik beoog is.

This paper is a practical and empirical investigation into the relationship and overlap between the two industrial paradigms of Lean Management and Industry 4.0. This is accomplished with an in-depth case study of a goods receipt to identify Lean wastes and accompanied by a discussion on how these wastes can be eliminated by enhancing the processes and material flows with Industry 4.0 technologies. It was found that efforts to enhance a process with Industry 4.0 Technologies should be preceded by ensuring that the process can be performed in a standardized manner. After that the study recommends improved methods of data collection which enables the effective implementation of other supporting Industry 4.0 Technologies.
Denna uppsats är en praktisk och empirisk utredning av relationen och samspelet mellan de två industriella paradigmen Lean Management och Industri 4.0. Till grund för det för det ligger en utförlig fallstudie av en godsmottagning för att identifiera Lean slöserier och en tillhörande diskussion om hur dessa slöserier kan elimineras genom att förbättra arbetsprocesser och materialflöden med Industri 4.0 och tillhörande teknologier. Ur det uppdagades att åtgärder för göra processer mer effektiva med dessa Industri 4.0 teknologier bör föregås av att processen kan utföras på ett standardiserat vis. När det är säkerställt så är det denna studies rekommendation att fokusera på metoder och verktyg för insamling av data vilket blir den grund som möjliggör implementering av behjälpliga och automatiserande Industri 4.0 teknologier.

Background: Companies operating in the low-cost offshore locations are increasingly challenged with various critical issues more recently that have directed their attention towards re-evaluating offshore strategies and considering reshoring. Rising labour costs, labour shortage and high labour fluctuation in offshore locations continues to create substantial risks and disturbances to the business and supply chain. These difficulties, especially in the light of higher labour productivity levels of developed countries and prospects of automation and robotisation, has persuaded many to believe this trend would encourage reshoring and enable companies to see manufacturing in developed countries cost effective once again. However, studies in reshoring are scarce, very little is known about labour or automation and especially how the two interrelates. Purpose: This thesis aims to explore the concepts of labour and automation and their interrelations in reshoring. Method: This research has adopted case study approach. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with a total of 6 companies from various countries, situated in both high and lowcost environments with reshoring intention or previous reshoring experiences. Transaction cost economics and the resource-based view have been applied in analysing the findings. Findings: This study has identified twelve labour factors and five automation factors in reshoring. The empirical findings showed labour cost as well as labour availability important in the decision of two companies. This study did not find empirical evidence to suggest automation as a significant reshoring motivating factor. Reviewing the literature also did not yield sufficient reliable evidence in support of automation. Labour and automation interrelations in reshoring have also been discussed as well as elucidating some considerations in applying automation in manufacturing.

Unfortunately, the supply of these skills does not meet the demand, due to the massive amount of data generated by society each day. This leaves businesses with a large amount of unanalyzed data that could have been used to support business decision making. Automating the process of analyzing this data would help address many companies' key challenge of a lack of appropriate analytical skills. This paper examines the process and challenges in automating this analysis of data. Central challenges include removing outliers without context, transforming data to a format that is compatible with the analysis method that will be used, and analyzing the results of the model.

Logistics has become one of the automotive industry's most crucial sub-sectors. Previously, logistics had to step aside to make way for production considerations. Today it is regarded as being every bit as crucial as production in the global village. Advancement of logistics in South Africa is crucial because original equipment manufacturers are producing to developed world standards but are having to cope with low developing world logistics standards. The logistics processes that need to be enhanced in order for the South African automotive industry to be more competitive were investigated. To examine the main problem, three sub-problems were identified. The first sub-problem that has been identified dealt with logistics processes that will enhance the competitive advantage of the South African automotive industry. The second sub-problems looked at key logistics opportunities and threats to the environment in which South African motor manufactures trade. They were investigated by assessing the nature of the South African motor manufacturing industry. Finally, the third sub-problem investigated conclusions that can be arrived at concerning the appropriateness and strategic value of the analysis.

Blockchain technology is an emerging technology that has attracted many enterprises’ interest in recent years. Enterprises are interested in improving business processes using blockchaintechnology. Blockchain technology creates an immutable record and eliminates intermediaries in the many transaction processes. Logistics services are one of the business processes that could benefit from blockchain technology. However, as an emerging technology, there is a lack of tools to analyse blockchain technology applications in enterprises. This research paper explores how can blockchain technology be utilised to improve enterprises’ business process, what will be the model of blockchain technology application, and how enterprise could utilise these models. There are three research methods elaborated in three parts of this report. The next paragraphs explain each part. The first part explores literature articles to research blockchain technology and logistics services quality parameters. It will identify the components of blockchain technology that create immutable records and eliminates intermediaries. Furthermore, it expounds on the scope and quality of logistics services today. Finally, it identifies the advantages of blockchain technology to improve the quality of logistics service. The second part of this report researches on the current use cases utilising blockchain technology that improve logistics services. A three-step prioritisation process is applied to define models of blockchain applications from the long list of use cases. The first step is to create a long list of use cases from the unstructured information on the worldwide web. In the second step, the findings from part one are utilised to cluster the long list of use cases into three models of blockchain use case in logistics services: trackability, traceability and direct transaction. Finally, the maturity of each cluster is analysed. Three readiness level are investigated: technological, consumer and regulation readiness. The combinations define the most matured to the least matured use case cluster. The last part of this report analyses the implementation of models uses cases in various scenarios for application in information technology enterprises. Research on a scenario analysis method and on the relevancy to the enterprises’ strategic decision-making process are explained. A simplified method is proposed to analyse the three models of blockchain technology from part two. The use case clusters are evaluated in various scenarios. The scenario analysis of the models of blockchain applications in logistics services will provide limited insight into how enterprises could implement the blockchain technology.

Företag är intresserade av att utveckla affärsprocesser med hjälp av blockchain-teknik. Blockchain-teknik skapar en oföränerlig post och eliminerar mellanhänder i de många transaktionsprocesserna. Logistik tjänster ä ren av de affärsprocesser som skulle kunna ha en fördel av blockchain-tekniken. Som en helt ny teknik är det och andra sidan brist på metoder att analysera blockchain-teknikens tillämpningar för företag. Denna uppsats efterforskar en metod för att analysera blockchain-tekniken i syfte att förbättra företags affärsprocesser. Tre forskningsmetoder är utvecklade i tre delar av denna rapport. Första steget är att skapa en lång lista av användningsfall från all ostrukturerad information på internet. Andra steget är att hitta, från steg ett, användningsfall och dela upp dem i tre modeller av blockchain användningsfall i logistiktjänster: lokaliseringgrad, spårbarhet och direkt transaktion. Slutligen, mognaden av varje kluster är analyserat där tre olika mognadsgrader har undersökts: Teknologi, beställaren och regleringsberedskap. Kombinationen definerar klustren från den mest mogna till den minst mogna. Sista delen av rapporten analyserar genomförande-modeller av användningsfall i olika scenarier för tillämpning i företagstjänster för informationsteknologi. Efterforskning av metoder för scenarioanalyser och relevans för förtagens strategiska beslutfattningsprocess förklaras. En förenklad metod förslås för att analysera de tre modellerna av blockchain-teknologin från del två. Mognadsgraden av varje kluster av användningsfall utvärderas i olika scenarios. Scenario-analysen av modellerna för blockchain-applikationer inom logistiktjänster kommer att ge begränsad insikt i hur företag kan implementera blockchain-tekniken.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) är en allt mer framväxande teknologi och används i organisationer för att automatisera och effektivisera manuella affärsprocesser. Det finns en rad fördelar med att använda denna teknik. Implementeringen av RPA kan dock kopplas till blandade reaktioner hos anställda och det är inte ovanligt att en del anställda motsätter sig tekniken på grund av rädsla och okunskap för automatiseringens påverkan. Denna fallstudie syftar att undersöka hur implementeringen av RPA påverkar organisatoriska aspekter som arbetssätt, roller och ansvar samt att undersöka om det finns skillnader i hantering och upplevelse kring detta i konsult-, privat- och offentlig verksamhet. För att undersöka ovan nämnda områden skedde datainsamlingen genom semistrukturerade intervjuer hosorganisationer som implementerat RPA samt genom litteraturundersökning. Resultatet visar att det finns en hel del likheter i hur RPA påverkar arbetet i organisationer, men skillnaderna ligger i hur arbetet med RPA bedrivs.
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is an increasingly emerging technology and is used in organizations to automate and streamline manual business processes. There are a number of advantages to using this technology. However, the implementation of RPA can be linked to mixed reactions among employees and it is not unusual for some employees to oppose the technology due to fear and ignorance of the influence of automation. This case study aims to investigate how the implementation of RPA affects organizational aspects such as working methods, roles and responsibilities, and examine whether there are differences in management and experience regarding this in consulting, private and public activities.In order to investigate the above-mentioned areas, the data collection was conducted through semistructured interviews with organizations that implemented RPA and through literature research. The result shows that there are a lot of similarities in how RPA affects the work in organizations, but the differences lie in how the work with RPA is conducted.

Long wait times are a global issue in the healthcare sector, particularly in Canada. Despite numerous research findings on wait time management, the issue persists. This is partly because for a given hospital, the data required to conduct wait times analysis is currently scattered across various information systems. Moreover, such data is usually not accurate (because of possible human errors), imprecise and late. The whole situation contributes to the current state of wait times. This thesis proposes a location-aware business process management system for real-time care process monitoring. More precisely, the system enables an improved visibility of process execution by gathering, as processes execute, accurate and granular process information including wait time measurements. The major contributions of this thesis include an architecture for the system, a prototype taking advantages of commercial real-time location system combined with a business process management system to accurately measure wait times, as well as a case study based on a real cardiology process from an Ontario hospital.

För att uppnå ökad effektivitet i logistikfunktionen kan konfigurationen av ett internt materialförsörjningssystem ha en betydande inverkan på minimering av icke värdeadderande aktiviteter. Det finns flera principer för intern materialförsörjning, hur dessa appliceras har en signifikant påverkan i en industriell miljö. Valet mellan olika system kännetecknas av en överhängande komplexitet där tillverkningsindustrier byter fram och tillbaka flera gånger. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att föreslå ett ramverk för utveckling av interna materialförsörjningssystem gällande svetsprocess inom metallbearbetning. Genomförande: Studien är genomförd som en enfallsstudie på Hörle Automatic. Där studiens tillvägagångsätt har varit att identifiera icke värdeadderade aktiviteter i fallföretagets interna materialförsörjningssystem till svetsprocessen. För att därefter utveckla deras nuvarande system för att minimera identifierade aktiviteter. Utifrån detta har ett ramverk konstruerats som belyser faktor som ska tas i beaktning vid utveckling av ett internt materialförsörjningssystem. Empiriskt material har samlats in genom intervjuer, observationer, fokusgrupper och arkivmaterial. För att möjliggöra identifiering av icke värdeadderande aktiviteter har en processkartläggning upprättats. Fortsättningsvis har det genomförts tester gällande förslag på arbetssätt som utvecklats. Resultat/Diskussion: Ett ramverk har konstruerats som belyser elva olika faktorer som ska tas i beaktning vid utveckling av ett internt materialförsörjningsystem. Det är faktorer relaterade till produktionsvariation, detaljspecifikation, layout, leverantörer och kommunikation. Slutsats: Det har identifierats totalt 18 icke värdeadderande aktiviteter gällande Hörle Automatics interna materialförsörjningssystem till svetsprocessen. Utvecklingen av det interna materialförsörjningssystemet enligt förslag eliminerar en del icke värdeadderande aktiviteterna som identifierats. Resterande aktiviteter minskas genom utvecklingen av en materialförsörjningsprocess som möjliggör en ny layout och att mer kostnadseffektiv personal utför de icke värdeadderande aktiviteterna
Background: Over the past decades, industrial logistics has gained an increasingly important role in giving companies a competitive edge in the global market. To achieve increased efficiency in the logistics function, the configuration of an internal materials supply system may have a significant impact on minimizing non-value added activities. There are several principles for internal materials supply system, how these are applied have a great impact on it’s industrial environment. The choice between different systems is characterized by an complexity where manufacturing industries change back and forth several times. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to propose a framework for the development of internal materials supply systems in the welding process within metalworking. Methodology: This is a case study at Hörle Automatic. The study approach has been to identify non-value adding activities in the case company's internal materials supply system to the welding process. And after that develop their current system to minimize identified activities. Based on this, a framework has been designed to highlight the factors to be taken into account when developing an internal materials supply system. Empirical material has been collected through interviews, observations, focus groups and archival material. To enable identification of nonvalue-adding activities, a process mapping has been established. Furthermore, tests have been carried out regarding internal materials supply processes to strengthen the author's proposal. Result/Discussion: The result of the study is a framework including eleven factors that companies should take into account when developing an internal materials supply system. The framework involves factors regarding, production variation, item specification, layout, suppliers, and communication. Conclusion: A total of 18 non-value adding activities was identified regarding Hörle Automatic's internal materials supply system in their welding process. The development of the internal materials supply system as proposed eliminates some of the identified nonvalue-adding activities performed by welding operators. The remaining activities are reduced through a new layout and that usage of more cost-effective personnel.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This document describes the different possibilities of Low Cost Intelligent Automation (LCIA)and process analysis for companies in the processing industry. These techniques can be used in production and assembly to reach a higher productivity and to maintain the company's competitiveness. Productivity is very important for any company, because it influences the profit. LCIA means using cheap solutions to automate processes in assembly and production. Cheaper machines payoff much faster. This is important, because life cycles are becoming shorter and shorter. With LCIA more manual processes can be automated. This is an advantage especially in countries with high labour costs. Process analysis helps to optimise processes in a company. To reach this goal it is essential to analyse processes systematically. This helps to gather detailed information about manufacturing defects and where they originated from. With these information it is much easier to eliminate the source of error and to reduce the number of defective products. Less errors in a production process lead to higher quality and productivity. The company "Festool GmbH Deutschland" serves as an example for using the described methods. The presented examples for LCIA are simple solutions to automate manual processes in the assembly division. The process of a fully automated machine serves as an example to illustrate the different aspects of a process analysis in this company. The methodologies presented in this document can be used to achieve improvements especially in productivity. Therefore any company coming from a labour intensive industry should think about integrating LCIA and process analysis into their continuous improvement strategy.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie dokument beskryf die verskillende moontlikhede van Lae Koste Intellegente Automasie (LKIA)en die proses analise vir maatskappye in die vervaardiging industrie. Hierdie metodes kan gebruik word in produksie en montering om hoër produktiwiteit te verkry sowel as die maatskapy se mededingendheid te handhaaf. Produktiwiteit is baie belangrik vir enige maatskappy, want dit beïnvloed die winsgewindheid. LKIA beteken die gebruik van goedkoop oplossings om prosesse te automatiseer in montering en produksie. Goedkoper masjiene word vinniger afbetaal. Dit is belangrik, want die lewenssiklus van beide produkte en masjiene word al korter. Met LKIA kan meer handprosesse ge-automatiseer word. Presently the automotive industry is facing enormous pressure due to global competition and ever changing legislative, economic and customer demands. Both, agility and reconfiguration are widely recognised as important attributes for manufacturing systems to satisfy the needs of competitive global markets. To facilitate and accommodate unforeseen business changes within the automotive industry, a new proactive methodology is urgently required for the design, build, assembly and reconfiguration of automation systems. There is also need for the promotion of new technologies and engineering methods to enable true engineering concurrency between product and process development. Virtual construction and testing of new automation systems prior to build is now identified as a crucial requirement to enable system verification and to allow the investigation of design alternatives prior to building and testing physical systems. The main focus of this research was to design and develop reconfigurable assembly systems within the powertrain sector of the automotive industry by capturing and modelling relevant business and engineering processes. This research has proposed and developed a more process-efficient and robust automation system design, build and implementation approach via new engineering services and a standard library of reusable mechanisms. Existing research at Loughborough had created the basic technology for a component based approach to automation. However, no research had been previously undertaken on the application of this approach in a user engineering and business context. The objective of this research was therefore to utilise this prototype method and associated engineering tools and to devise novel business and engineering processes to enable the component-based approach to be applied in industry. This new approach has been named Configurable and Collaborative Automation Systems (CO AS). In particular this new research has studied the implications of migration to a COAS approach in terms of I) necessary changes to the end-users business processes, 2) potential to improve the robustness of the resultant system and 3) potential for improved efficiency and greater collaboration across the supply chain.

Supply Chain Management is a well recognized managerial tool and government initiative, primarily aimed at improving all the aspects of the procurement activities in government organizations or any type of the sector. It focuses on meeting the needs of the service providers as well as of the customers. In 1994, South African Government came up with new initiatives to manage its budget and finance resources to meet the needs of the people. One of the new initiatives that the new Government introduced was the Supply Chain Management (SCM). The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act No.108 of 1996, as amended regulates procurement through Section 217. The statutes states that “217(1) when an Organ of State in the national, provincial or local sphere of government, or any institution identified in national legislation, contracts for goods or services, it must do so in accordance with a system which is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective The procurement reform processes were supported by the introduction of a number of legislative measures, including the adoption of the Public Financial Management Act (PFMA) and the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA). Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) is a financial act that was developed in 1999 to reform the public financial management of South Africa. The Act promotes the objective of good financial management in order to maximise delivery through the efficient and effective use of limited resources. Public Financial Management Act (PFMA) emphasizes on efficiency, transparency and economic utilization of public funds. The Treasury Regulations 16.5.3 states that, ‘when procuring goods and services, the procurement procedures must be in accordance with a system that is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective. Even though government departments have started implementing the Supply Chain Management strategies, there are still some challenges and deficiencies that hinder appropriate implementation. There are some deficiencies in tender award systems, ineffectiveness of SCM training materials, lack of communication between management and SCM or implementing staff as a result the implementing staff is not aware of the organization’s goals regarding supply chain management activities. Lack of monitoring, evaluation and reporting is also another challenge. Due to these challenges, the Head Office of the Eastern Cape Department of Health had incurred some expenses in trying to address these yet the Supply Chain Management has little impact in improving the service delivery. The key research objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the implementation of Supply Chain Management in service delivery with specific focus in procurement processes of goods and services in Head Office of Eastern Cape Department of Health. The study intends to establish and highlight the challenges that the Head Office of the Eastern Cape Department of Health is presently faced with in regard to implementation of the Supply Chain Management and the impact it has in service delivery. Data gathering techniques which include interviews and questionnaires had been used. The objectives, methodology and results of the study are presented. The conclusions and recommendations had been made with the basis that they will assist the department in improving the implementation of the Supply Chain Management which will have a positive impact in the service delivery. Further steps needs to be taken by the Provincial Treasuries in assisting department to improve in the implementation of the Supply Chain Management. Further research conduct is recommended for all the institutions of the department of Health as this study was focusing on Head Office only.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There are numerous supply chain planning processes and activities that need to take place to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in a company. For the case study retailer, these planning processes and activities contribute to the end goals and objectives of the company. In order to reach these goals and objectives, the importance and contribution of each of the planning processes and activities must be determined. Supply chain planning can provide a company with a competitive advantage, but it can also lead to catastrophic events when it is not fully utilised or poorly executed. A case study was done on a South African sports retailer to determine to what extent the different supply chain planning processes and activities contribute to the end goals and objectives of this retailer and how these goals and objectives are tracked within the company. The implementation of planning processes and -activities were also investigated and what the consequences may be when the planning processes and activities are poorly executed. Goals and objectives which were given to the retailer‟s planners were investigated and thoroughly studied. Some of these goals included achieving effective stock policies, managing gross sales margins for products and accurate forecasting. A hybrid research method was used to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Interviews were conducted with planners in the company to explore their current planning methods as well as to highlight the shortcomings thereof. A job satisfaction questionnaire determined the motivators and hygiene factors (where hygiene factors refer to factors such as the employee‟s relationships with their supervisor, salaries and working conditions) of the employees in the company. A low level of motivators and hygiene factors may contribute to employee‟s responses at the workplace: exit, voice, loyalty and neglect. The importance of supply chain planning in the sports retail industry and the shortcomings this retailer has on supply chain planning methods were determined and the crucial role planning plays in this retailer was effectively determined and comprehended. Areas for improvement include, realistic budgeting and planning, enhanced forecasting methods and investing in employee training. Results also show that the retailer is managing effective levels of planning to reach the goals and objectives of the company. However, there are key areas for improvement where focus should be placed upon.

Conventional supply chain integration concepts focus primarily on the internal and external integration of individual supply chains (can be viewed as intra-supply chain integration). Due to the highly integrated nature of petrochemical value chains, related supply chains should also be integrated by taking account of enterprise/industry-wide synergies and interdependencies (can be viewed as inter-supply chain integration). Inter-supply chain integration can typically develop along three dimensions: - Upstream feed clusters (upstream in the chemical value chain) - Downstream product clusters (downstream in the chemical value chain) - Macro logistics network clusters (within and across related logistics networks for liquid bulk, dry bulk, packaged goods and gases) This dissertation presents a generic framework of applicable intra- and inter-supply chain planning processes that supports related long- (strategic), medium- (tactical) and short-term (operational) supply chain decisions for large-scale petrochemical companies. This type of companies has to manage relative complex supply chains. Highly complex supply chains (due to an extensive product portfolio, supplier base, customer base, manufacturing processes, transportation, and management processes and systems) require far more advanced planning processes than simple supply chains. Advanced supply chain planning processes cover an extended supply chain scope, deal with longer time horizons, and utilize more sophisticated analytical techniques and decision support systems. An extensive literature study, supplemented by empirical research in the South African petrochemical industry, provided the foundation for the advanced supply chain planning framework concluded in this dissertation. Semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire presented to an informed audience constitute the empirical research conducted. The related best practices, concepts, approaches followed, and level of advancement in three supply chain planning dimensions were derived. To guide petrochemical companies along the planning advancement journey, the roadmap developed can be utilized for the application and implementation of the advanced supply chain planning framework. This roadmap articulates the advancement stages, dimensions, characteristics, and triggers to advance. Typical characteristics associated with the advancement stages and dimensions provide the means for a company to assess their level of progression. The essential mechanisms that can enable interventions are also articulated.

In an attempt to have medicines available in patient-ready packs (PRPs) prior to the dispensing process, the provincial medicine depots in South Africa have, for many years, been repackaging bulk medicines into PRPs. Notwithstanding the fact that bulk medicine packages may have been the only packages available from the manufacturers to service the Primary Health Care (PHC) sector, the main aim of this process was to ensure that medicines were available in PRPs for dispensing to patients, thus, minimising the time spent on each prescription by the pharmacist, pharmacist’s assistant or Nurse. Currently, some medicines are being procured in PRPs from the manufacturers, whereas others are still procured in bulk packs which must be repackaged into PRPs. After a thorough literature search, it was established that, up until this point in time, no studies have been performed to compare costs of repackaged medicines from bulk packs with costs of medicines procured from manufacturers in PRPs. There was very scanty literature comparing the use of medicines procured either in PRPs or bulk packs. However, literature on cost comparison between repackaging and purchasing of commercially available manufacturer-prepared PRPs was not identified.

When the African National Congress (ANC) took office in 1994 it introduced various policies that would govern budgetary and financial reforms in South Africa. The main objective was to modernize the management of the public sector. Even though government Departments have started implementing the Supply Chain Management strategies, there are still some challenges and deficiencies that hinder appropriate implementation. The key research objectives of the study is to investigate and evaluate the implementation of Supply Chain Management in service delivery with specific focus in procurement processes of goods and services in the Eastern Cape Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs This study has demonstrated perceptions in the implementation of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The overwhelming majority of participants have shown dissatisfaction with the implementation of SCM. Service providers argue that there is no opportunity for them to develop as Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) and only those service providers who are fully developed benefit from SCM. The study intends to establish and highlight the challenges that the Eastern Cape Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs is presently faced with in regard to implementation procurement processes among staff members, managers and service providers This study is mainly qualitative but also exposes the reader to the quantitative research method

This dissertation focuses on topics related to the value of real-time information and/or to supply uncertainties due to uncertain lead-times and yields in supply chains. The first two of these topics address issues associated with freight transportation, while the remaining two topics are concerned with inventory replenishment. We first assess the value of dynamic tour determination for the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Given a network with traffic dynamics that can be modeled as a Markov chain, we present a policy determination procedure that optimally builds a tour dynamically. We then explore the potential for expected total travel cost reduction due to dynamic tour determination, relative to two a priori tour determination procedures. Second, we consider the situation where the decision to continue or abort transporting perishable freight from an origin to a destination can be made at intermediate locations, based on real-time freight status monitoring. We model the problem as a partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP) and develop an efficient procedure for determining an optimal policy. We determine structural characteristics of an optimal policy and upper and lower bounds on the optimal reward function. Third, we analyze a periodic review inventory control problem with lost sales and random yields and present conditions that guarantee the existence of an optimal policy having a so-called staircase structure. We make use of this structure to accelerate both value iteration and policy evaluation. Lastly, we examine a model of inventory replenishment where both lead time and supply qualities are uncertain. We model this problem as an MDP and show that the weighted sum of inventory in transit and inventory at the destination is a sufficient statistic, assuming that random shrinkage can occur from the origin to the supply system or destination, shrinkage is deterministic within the supply system and from the supply system to the destination, and no shrinkage occurs once goods reach the destination.

This research focuses on large-scale manufacturing systems having a number of stations with multiple tools and product types with different and deterministic processing steps. The objective is to determine the production quantities of multiple products and the tool requirements of each station that maximizes net profit while satisfying strategic constraints such as cycle times, required throughputs, and investment. The formulation of the problem, named OptiProfit, is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) with the stochastic issues addressed by mean-value analysis (MVA) and queuing network models. Observing that OptiProfit is an NP-complete, nonconvex, and nonmonotonic problem, the research develops a heuristic method, Differential Coefficient Based Search (DCBS). It also performs an upper-bound analysis and a performance comparison with six variations of Greedy Ascent Procedure (GAP) heuristics and Modified Simulated Annealing (MSA) in a number of randomized cases. An example problem based on a semiconductor manufacturing minifab is modeled as an OptiProfit problem and numerically analyzed. The proposed methodology provides a very good quality solution for the high-level design and operation of manufacturing facilities.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: RFID technology may be the most capable technology to address the track and trace requirements within the Agri-food supply chain. RFID technology has become a prominent research area in recent times, with multiple benefits being promised and envisaged. The list of applications and deployments within the supply chain is numerous, with the ambassadors of this technology promising increased supply chain effectiveness, inventory management capabilities and enhanced information visibility. Deregulations within the South African citrus industry created changes to the internal structure of the industry, with the requirements of enhanced information visibility for traceability becoming a high priority. Current information structures and initiatives are providing the basic requirements for the changing business environment, with limitations to real-time and visible information for improved decision-making and planning initiatives. The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify the critical success factors for RFID technology deployment in supply chains in general and to identify the critical success factors relevant to the South African citrus industry. The study also researched the benefits and challenges of deploying RFID technology within the South African citrus industry, relating to citrus supply chain performance improvements of RFID adoption. The research indicates that certain limitations and challenges pertinent to the citrus industry exist, which would require industry level priority for successful implementation of RFID technology within the South African citrus industry. This study provides the South African citrus industry with a guideline to address the current non-collective management of information, information systems and requirements and collaboration initiatives. The use of this research should be of great assistance to the South African citrus industry role-players by providing a strategic framework for addressing information improvement initiatives.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: RFID tegnologie kan moontlik die mees bevoegde tegnologie wees om die naspeurbaarheid vereistes van n Agri-voedsel voorsiening ketting aan te spreek. RFID tegnologie is huidiglik 'n prominente navorsingsgebied, met beloofde meervoudige voordele. Die lys van aanwendings en toepassings binne die voorsiening ketting is veelvoudig, met beloftes van die ambassadeurs van die tegnologie, vir verbeterde voorsienings ketting doeltreffendheid, inventaris bestuur en verhoogde inligtings sigbaarheid. Deregulasie van die Suid Afrikaanse sitrus industrie het interne strukturuele veranderinge in die industrie teweeg gebring, met prioriteit fokus vir verhoogde inligting sigbaarheid vir naspeurbaarheid doeleindes. Huidige inligting strukture en initiatiewe verskaf die basiese grondslag vir die deurlopende veranderende besigheids omgewing, met intyd en sigbaarheids inligtings beperkinge, vir verbeterde besluitneming en beplanning initiatiewe. Die doel van die ondersoekende studies was om die generiese kritieke sukses faktore van RFID tegnologie implementering en die kritieke sukses faktore direk verwant tot die Suid Afrikaanse sitrus industrie te identifiseer. Die studie het ook die voordele en uitdagings van RFID implementering binne die Suid Afrikaanse sitrus industrie nagevors, spesifiek verwant tot die prestasie verbeterings van RFID implementering in die sitrus voorsienings ketting. Die navorsing dui aan dat sekere beperkinge en uitdagings spesifiek tot die sitrus industrie bestaan wat industrie vlak prioriteit vereis, vir suksevolle implementasie van RFID tegnologie binne die Suid Afrikaanse sitrus industrie. Die resultate van die studie verskaf die Suid Afrikaanse sitrus industrie met 'n riglyn om die uitdagings van die huidige nie-kollektiewe bestuur van inligting, inligting stelsels en vereistes en samewerkings initiatiewe aan te spreek. In this thesis, we study three applications of dynamic resource allocation: the first two consider dynamic lead-time quotation in make-to-order (MTO) systems with substitutable products and order cancellations, respectively; and the third application is a manpower allocation problem with job-teaming constraints. Matching supply and demand for manufacturing and service industries has been a fundamental focus of operations management literature, which concentrated on optimizing or improving supply-side decisions since demand has generally been assumed to be exogenously determined. However, recent business trends and advances in consumer behavior modeling have shown that demand for goods and services can clearly be shaped by various decisions that a firm makes, such as price and lead-time. In fact, competition between companies is no longer mainly based on price or product features; lead-time is one of the strategic measures to evaluate suppliers. In MTO manufacturing or service environments that aim to satisfy the customers' unique needs, lead-time quotation impacts the actual demand of the products and the overall profitability of the firm. In the first two parts of the thesis, we study the dynamic lead-time quotation problem in pure MTO (or service) systems characterized by lead-time sensitive Poisson demand and exponentially distributed service times. We formulate the problem as an infinite horizon Markov decision process (MDP) with the objective of maximizing the long-run expected average profit per unit time, where profits are defined to specifically account for delays in delivery of the customer orders. We study dynamic lead-time quotation problem in two particular settings; one setting with the possibility of demand substitution and another setting with order cancellations. The fundamental trade-off in lead-time quotation is between quoting short lead-times and attaining them. In case of demand substitution, i.e., in presence of substitutable products and multiple customer classes with different requirements and margins, this trade-off also includes capacity allocation and order acceptance decisions. In particular, one needs to decide whether to allocate capacity to a low-margin order now, or whether to reserve capacity for potential future arrivals of high-margin orders by considering customer preferences, the current workload in the system, and the future arrivals. In the case of order cancellations, one needs to take into account the probability of cancellation of orders currently in the system and quote lead-times accordingly; otherwise quotation of a longer lead-time may result in the loss of customer order, lower utilization of resources, and, in turn, reduced in profits. In Chapter 2, we study a dynamic lead-time quotation problem in a MTO system with two (partially) substitutable products and two classes of customers. Customers decide to place an order on one of the products or not to place an order, based on the quoted lead-times. We analyze the optimal profit and the structure of the optimal lead-time policy. We also compare the lead-time quotes and profits for different quotation strategies (static vs. dynamic) with or without substitution. Numerical results show that substitution and dynamic quotation have synergetic effects, and higher benefits can be obtained by dynamic quotation and/or substitution when difference in product revenues or arrival rates, or total traffic intensity are higher. In Chapter 3, we study a dynamic lead-time quotation problem in a MTO system with single product considering the order cancellations. The order cancellations can take place during the period that the order is being processed (either waiting or undergoing processing), or after the processing is completed, at the delivery to the customer. We analyze the behavior of optimal profit in terms of cancellation parameters. We show that the optimal profit does not necessarily decrease as cancellation rate increases through a numerical study. When the profit from a cancelled order, arrival rate of customers, or lead-time sensitivity of customers are high, there is a higher probability that optimal profit increases as cancellation rate increases. We also compare the cancellation scenarios with the corresponding no-cancellation scenarios, and show that there exists a cancellation scenario that is at least as good in terms of profit than a no-cancellation scenario for most of the parameter settings. In Chapter 4, we study the Manpower Allocation Problem with Job-Teaming Constraints with the objective of minimizing the total completion time of all tasks. The problem arises in various contexts where tasks require cooperation between workers: a team of individuals with varied expertise required in different locations in a business environment, surgeries requiring different composition of doctors and nurses in a hospital, a combination of technicians with individual skills needed in a service company. A set of tasks at random locations require a set of capabilities to be accomplished, and workers have unique capabilities that are required by several tasks. Tasks require synchronization of workers to be accomplished, hence workers arriving early at a task have to wait for other required workers to arrive in order to start processing. We present a mixed integer programming formulation, strengthen it by adding cuts and propose heuristic approaches. Experimental results are reported for low and high coordination levels, i.e., number of workers that are required to work simultaneously on a given task.

Digitaliseringen är ett aktuellt ämne i dagens samhälle, och den snabba utvecklingen gör att redovisningsbranschen utmanas i allt större utsträckning än tidigare. Till följd av detta har det uppstått omfattande förändringar i redovisningskonsulternas dagliga arbete vilket påverkar redovisningsbranschen i stort. Syftet med studien var därmed att undersöka och analysera om en ökad digitalisering av redovisningsarbetet försämrar kvalitén av den produkt som redovisningskonsulter skapar. En empirisk undersökning har genomförts med hjälp av kvalitativ metod, där intervjuer med erfarna redovisningskonsulter skapat grunden för arbetet. För att ytterligare stärka det empiriska underlaget samlades sekundärdata in från de aktuella redovisningsbyråernas hemsidor. En jämförelse med den tidigare forskningen inom området gjordes sedan, där studiens resultat analyserades och tolkningar gavs. Resultaten ansågs inte ge tillräckligt starka indikationer för att digitaliseringen påverkar kvalitén av den produkt som redovisningskonsulter skapar. Därav är slutsatsen för denna studie att redovisningsproduktens kvalité inte tenderar att försämras av de digitaliserade processerna inom redovisningsyrket.
The digitization is a current topic in today's society, and the rapid progress creates greater challenges than before for the accounting industry. Due to this, significant changes have occurred in the accountants daily tasks which affects the industry in general. Thus, the purpose of the study was to investigate and analyze whether an increased digitization of the accounting profession deteriorates the quality of the product that accountants create. An empirical research has also been conducted using qualitative methods, where interviews with senior accountants create the basis for the study. To further strengthen the empirical data, secondary data was collected from the accounting bureaus websites. A comparison was then made with the previous research on the subject, whereupon the results of the study were analyzed and interpreted. The results of the study were not considered strong enough to provide indications that digitization affects the quality of the products that accountants create. Therefore, the conclusion of the study is that the product of the accounting does not seem to be impaired by the digitization within the accounting profession.

Bakgrund: Det finns problem med handeln av vildsvinskött, där det idag inte är mer än 15% av köttet som når den legala marknaden. Detta beror på de hinder och flaskhalsar som existerar i kedjan som i dagsläget hindrar en effektiv kedja. Den resterande delen av köttet förbrukas antingen av jägarna själva eller för populationskontroll och skadedjursskjutning då vildsvin kan orsaka stora skador på bönders verksamhet. Detta leder till att det sker ett stort svinn av helt ätbart kött som hade kunnat säljas på en marknad. Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att kartlägga logistikkedjan för vildsvinskött i södra Sverige. Genom kartläggningen identifieras svårigheter som finns inom logistikkedjan idag. Utifrån relevant teori ges förslag på potentiella förbättringar. Genom att överkomma svårigheterna möjliggörs en mer effektiv logistikkedja, med mer vildsvinskött på marknaden och ökad lönsamhet för de olika aktörerna som verkar inom kedjan. Metod: I uppsatsen har en processutvärdering använts för att kunna få en överblick över processerna och vad som behöver förändras. Den empiriska materialinsamlingen gjordes genom semistrukturerade intervjuer. Slutsats: I uppsatsen har handeln av vildsvinskött kartlagts. Hinder har identifierats och förslag presenterats. En av de tydligaste slutsatserna har visat sig vara stora fluktuationerna i både utbud och efterfrågan vilket innebär att det är svårt att göra prognoser, vilket vi ändå föreslår att man gör. Digitaliseras prognoserna skulle informationsutbytet bli betydligt bättre då butiker och anläggningar skulle kunna dela prognoser om utbud och efterfrågan med varandra. Det hade lett till ett bättre in- och utflöde på marknaden vilket slutligen resulterat i en bättre fungerande handel av vildsvinskött.

The rest of the 85% of wild boar meat that does not reach the market is consumed by hunters and wasted because of population control and pest control because wild boars cause damage for farmers. This leads to partially wasted meat which could have been sold on the market for profits. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to map the process of the logistic chain for wild boar meat in southern Sweden. The difficulties that exist today in the logistic chain will be identified through process mapping. We also give suggestions for potential improvements, supported by relevant theory. Overcoming these difficulties will enable a more efficient logistic chain, with more wild boar meat on the market and increased profitability for the different actors that operate within the chain. Method: This essay uses a process evaluation study to be able to get an overview of the processes and what needs to change. The empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews. Conclusion: The market for wild boar meat in Sweden has been identified through process mapping. Problems have been visualized and potential solutions have been presented. This paper has showed large fluctuations in both demand and supply. That means that it is difficult to make forecasts. We suggest forecasts as a tool for predicting the fluctuations. The sharing of information between the different parties will be considerably better if stores and the plants that handle wild boar meat in Sweden digitalize the forecasts. That would increase the inflow and the outflow to the market. This would result in a better logistic chain for wild boar meat.

Практическая значимость исследования заключается в автоматизация основных процессов частной клиники с помощью ПО «1С: Медицина», что привело к сокращению управленческих расходов и получению дополнительной прибыли.

The purpose of this final thesis isto develop a model for justification and evaluation of RFID technology. RFID is a new, relatively untested, technology using radio signals for automatic identification of different objects. Our theoretical frame of references focuses on research about RFID and implementation iss ues, we also conducted case studies and interviews in order to learn about RFID. Most RFID installations of today are Pilots or early adopters wanting to try new technology. A lot of the written sources were reports from consultancy firms or suppliers of technology.

Implementing RFID in real environment gave important insights into potentials and limitations of the technology. It proved that it is difficult to achieve sufficient readability in a steel environment. We also learned that one should not underestimate the time for installation and tuning in order to meet higher readability. The project finally resulted in an iterative model for justification and evaluation of RFID technology.

Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM) bezeichnet eine Teildisziplin des Supply Chain Management und ist für Unternehmen ein Ansatzpunkt, durch frühzeitige Reaktion auf kritische Ausnahmeereignisse in der Wertschöpfungskette Logistikleistung und -kosten zu optimieren. Durch Rahmenbedingungen wie bspw. globale Logistikstrukturen, eine hohe Artikelvielfalt und volatile Geschäftsbeziehungen zählt die Modeindustrie zu den Branchen, die für kritische Störereignisse besonders anfällig ist. In diesem Sinne untersucht die vorliegende Dissertation nach einer Beleuchtung der wesentlichen Grundlagen zunächst, inwiefern es in der Modeindustrie tatsächlich einen Bedarf an SCEM-Systemen gibt. Anknüpfend daran zeigt sie nach einer Darstellung bisheriger SCEM-Architekturkonzepte Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten für eine Systemarchitektur auf, die auf den Designprinzipien der Serviceorientierung beruht. In diesem Rahmen erfolgt u. a. auch die Identifikation SCEM-relevanter Business Services. Die Vorzüge einer serviceorientierten Gestaltung werden detailliert anhand der EPCIS (EPC Information Services)-Spezifikation illustriert. Abgerundet wird die Arbeit durch eine Betrachtung der Nutzenpotenziale von SCEM-Systemen. Nach einer Darstellung von Ansätzen, welche zur Nutzenbestimmung infrage kommen, wird der Nutzen anhand eines Praxisbeispiels aufgezeigt und fließt zusammen mit den Ergebnissen einer Literaturrecherche in eine Konsolidierung von SCEM-Nutzeffekten. Hierbei wird auch beleuchtet, welche zusätzlichen Vorteile sich für Unternehmen durch eine serviceorientierte Architekturgestaltung bieten. In der Schlussbetrachtung werden die wesentlichen Erkenntnisse der Arbeit zusammengefasst und in einem Ausblick sowohl beleuchtet, welche Relevanz die Ergebnisse der Arbeit für die Bewältigung künftiger Herausforderungen innehaben als auch welche Anknüpfungspunkte sich für anschließende Forschungsarbeiten ergeben.

Також проаналізовано і проведено класифікацію методів та практик призначених для розробки високонавантажених та сервісорієнтованих CRM систем. Було досліджено шаблони проектування, які дозволяють пришвидшити розробку і покращити якість CRM системи.

Les travaux présentés dans ce document portent sur des problèmes d'optimisation dans le domaine de la logistique interne des entrepôts. Le domaine est soumis à une forte concurrence et est en plein essor, poussé par les besoins croissants du marché et favorisé par l'automatisation. L'entreprise SAVOYE construit des équipements et propose sa propre solution GTP (Goods-To-Person) pour la préparation de commandes. La solution utilise un système de stockage automatisé appelé X-Picking Tray System (X-PTS) et achemine les charges automatiquement à des postes de travail via des carrousels pour effectuer des opérations séquencées. C'est un système de systèmes particulièrement complexe qui offre de nombreuses applications aux techniques de la recherche opérationnelle. Tout cela définit le périmètre applicatif et théorique des travaux menés dans cette thèse. Nous avons d'abord traité un problème d'ordonnancement de type Job Shop avec des contraintes de précédences. Le contexte particulier du problème a permis de le résoudre en un temps polynomial avec un algorithme exact. Celui-ci a permis de calculer les dates d'injection des charges provenant des différents flux de sortie du stockage pour s'agréger sur un carrousel, dans un ordre donné. Ainsi, la gestion inter-allées du stockage PTS a été améliorée et le débit du flux de charges maximisé, depuis le stockage jusqu'à un poste. Nous avons ensuite étudié des algorithmes de tri tels que le tri par base et développé un algorithme de tri en ligne, utilisé pour piloter des systèmes autonomes de tri appelés Buffers Séquenceurs (BS). Placés en amont de chaque poste de travail dans la solution GTP, les BS permettent de délocaliser la fonction de tri en aval du stockage, augmentant de facto le débit des flux de sortie. Enfin, nous avons considéré un problème de séquencement consistant à trouver une extension linéaire d'un ordre partiel minimisant une distance avec un ordre donné. Nous proposons de le résoudre par une approche de programmation linéaire en nombres entiers, par la construction de programmes dynamiques et par des heuristiques de type glouton. Une heuristique efficace a été développée en se basant sur des appels itératifs d'un des programmes dynamiques, permettant d'atteindre une solution proche ou égale à l'optimum en un temps très court. L'application de ce problème aux flux de sortie non ordonnés du stockage X-PTS permet de réaliser un pré-tri au niveau des carrousels. Les diverses solutions développées ont été validées par simulation et certaines ont été brevetées et/ou déjà été mises en application dans des entrepôts
The work presented in this PhD thesis deals with optimization problems in the context of internal warehouse logistics. The field is subject to strong competition and extensive growth, driven by the growing needs of the market and favored by automation. SAVOYE builds warehouse storage handling equipment and offers its own GTP (Goods-To-Person) solution for order picking. The solution uses an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) called X-Picking Tray System (X-PTS) and automatically routes loads to workstations via carousels to perform sequenced operations. It is a highly complex system of systems with many applications for operational research techniques. All this defines the applicative and theoretical scope of the work carried out in this thesis. In this thesis, we have first dealt with a specific scheduling Job Shop problem with precedence constraints. The particular context of this problem allowed us to solve it in polynomial time with exact algorithms. These algorithms made it possible to calculate the injection schedule of the loads coming from the different storage output streams to aggregate on a carousel in a given order. Thus, the inter-aisle management of the X-PTS storage was improved and the throughput of the load flow was maximized, from the storage to a station. In the sequel of this work, the radix sort LSD (Least Significant Digit) algorithm was studied and a dedicated online sorting algorithm was developed. The second one is used to drive autonomous sorting systems called Buffers Sequencers (BS), which are placed upstream of each workstation in the GTP solution. Finally, a sequencing problem was considered, consisting of finding a linear extension of a partial order minimizing a distance with a given order. An integer linear programming approach, different variants of dynamic programming and greedy algorithms were proposed to solve it. An efficient heuristic was developed based on iterative calls of dynamic programming routines, allowing to reach a solution close or equal to the optimum in a very short time. The application of this problem to the unordered output streams of X-PTS storage allows pre-sorting at the carousel level. The various solutions developed have been validated by simulation and some have been patented and/or already implemented in warehouses

In a world going towards automation, I ask whether salespeople making pricing decisions in a high human interaction environment such as business to business (B2B) retail, could be automated, and under what conditions it would be most beneficial. I propose a hybrid approach to automation that combines the expert salesperson and an artificial intelligence model of the salesperson in making pricing decisions in B2B. The hybrid approach preserves individual and organizational knowledge both by learning the expert's decision making behavior and by keeping the expert in the decision making process for decisions that require human judgment. Using sales transactions data from a B2B aluminum retailer, I create an automated version of each salesperson, that learns the salesperson's pricing policy based on her past pricing decisions. In a field experiment, I provide salespeople in the B2B retailer with their own model's price recommendations through their CRM system in real-time, and allow them to adjust their original pricing accordingly. I find that despite the loss of non-codeable information that is available to the salesperson but not to the model, providing the model's price increases profits for treated quotes by as much as 10% relative to a control condition, which translates to approximately $1.3 million in yearly profits. Using a counterfactual analysis, I also find that a hybrid pricing approach, that follows the model's pricing most of time, but defers to the salesperson's pricing when the model is missing important information is more profitable than pure automation or pure reliance on the salesperson's pricing. I find that in most cases the model's scalability and consistency lead to better pricing decisions that translate to higher profits, but when pricing uncommon products or pricing for unfamiliar clients it is best to use human judgment. I investigate different ways, including machine learning methods, to model the salesperson's behavior and to combine salespeople's expertise as reflected by their automated representations, and discuss implications for automation of tasks that involve soft skills.

Mobile B2E-applications (business-to-employee) can add significant value to a company’s business, when large workforce divisions are involved in the execution of certain business processes. From a technical point of view, the major issues are solved (e.g. solutions for connectivity, broadband mobile networks, synchronization mechanisms, secure protocols etc.). But from a business point of view there is a lack of methodology regarding the alignment of technical solutions to the business needs. As companies face a continuously faster change in business models, legal constraints and customer needs, highly flexible systems are needed to react to changing business processes. Furthemore, the introduction of new mobile systems is often a technologydriven process, pushing the alignment of software and systems to the highly specific, fast changing business needs into the background. This paper introduces a framework summarizing the findings from earlier research and case studies related to this topic. The framework consists of a general reference process for mobile work and of a model explaining influencing factors, optimization goals and their relationships for mobile processes. The framework can be applied for process modeling, simulation and optimization as well as for requirements analysis and return on investment calculations.

Abstract Logistics system, such as transportation and storage, plays an important role in the modern environment of business management. Therefore, the research is based on exploring relevant topics on choosing logistics companies for domestic industries. The main research direction is focused on “how do logistics companies’ inner capability influence logistics results of general industries?”. Through actual investigations on factory managers in order to find out variables which influence decisions for industries to choose their logistics companies, then all types of references can be provided to industry managers for them to choose their ideal logistics companies. Using questionnaires as the tool of collecting information, the research conducts sampling using information on “top 5000 Taiwan industries in the year of 2001”. Sending out the total of 500 questionnaires, and receiving the total of 109 valid questionnaires in return. The valid questionnaires in return are 21.9%. The research uses valid questionnaires to conduct proof analysis on topics of “analysis of variables”, and “regression analysis”. According to the research, positive results reflect in the following aspects. They are logistics companies’ ability of customers’ services (reliability, stability, and speed), level of business automation (input of automatic facilities, application of information system, and input of automatic employment), and relationship constructed between consigned industries and logistics companies (level of cooperation dependence and level of coordination). If professional logistics companies can meet the following requests better, such as finish delivery within certain period of time, simply order procedure, raise applied proportion of inner automation, and increase delivery efficiency, then consigned industries are more able to satisfy customers’ needs. Moreover, as far as findings for structure of relationships are concerned, “intimate type” of community delivers more on time and reaches higher level of satisfaction from clients then “cooperative type” and “independent type” of communities. Generally speaking, if relationship between consigned industries and cooperative logistics companies are closer, then industries’ logistics results are better. The research also shows that, professional logistics companies’ level of business automation and level of customers’ services are positively correlated. If logistics companies can develop thorough automatic logistics operation system and information system, then they can improve their level of customers’ services and satisfaction in order to increase logistics performance for consigned industries. The present dissertation was carried out as part of the Integrated Master of Industrial Engineering and Management and under the scope of Sonae’s internship initiative, “Call for Solutions”, more specifically at the International Logistics Department of Sonae SR. The challenge proposed by Sonae was named “Create and implement Sonae’s future business processes and solutions for International Logistics” and consisted in integrating a transformation programme team that was responsible for creating and implementing collaborative processes and solutions, supported on a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution, in collaboration with international partners worldwide. This project emerged when a series of constraints were identified in every team of Sonae’s International Logistics Department. In order to tackle these constraints, a supply chain collaborative solution has been developed and implemented, enabling the creation of a single point of contact and visibility for all supply chain stakeholders, available globally and at any time. This project has implied great organizational changes, since all import and export processes will be managed exclusively through this tool. In addition, entities such as suppliers, logistics service providers and customs brokers must be engaged on it and have an active role, in order to achieve a successful Roll-Out. The results were very satisfactory: in 11 months, 63% of the total purchase orders for suppliers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka regions, and 29%, for suppliers from China region, were placed through this tool, representing almost 1600 purchase orders. Regarding the supply chain entities that had to be engaged, the on-boarding rates were the following: (i) A total of 79 suppliers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were on-boarded, representing an on-boarding rate of 100%; (ii) 96 suppliers from China region were on-boarded, from a total of 418, representing an on-boarding rate of 23%; (iii) A total of 3 Logistics Service Providers/3PL were on-boarded, representing an on-boarding rate of 100%; (iv) A total of 2 Customs Brokers were on-boarded, representing an on-boarding rate of 100%;
A presente dissertação foi realizada no âmbito do Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial e desenvolvida sob a iniciativa de estágios “Call for Solutions”, promovida pela Sonae, na Direção de Logística Internacional (DLI). O desafio proposto pela Sonae, no âmbito da referida iniciativa apresentou o tema “Create and implement Sonae’s future business processes and solutions for International Logistics” e consistiu em integrar uma equipa de projeto, responsável por desenvolver e implementar novos processos de negócio e soluções, em colaboração com parceiros internacionais, necessários para a implementação de uma solução digital colaborativa, suportada num regime de “Software as a Service”. Este projeto surgiu quando uma série de ineficiências foram identificadas, conexas aos processos de importação e exportação da Sonae. Por forma a colmatar as necessidades identificadas, uma ferramenta digital tem sido desenvolvida e implementada na realidade operacional da Direção de Logística Internacional, que visa criar um ponto único de contacto e visibilidade, para as entidades presentes na cadeia de abastecimento. Este projeto implicou grandes alterações organizacionais e gestão da mudança, dado que todos os processos de importação e exportação serão, no futuro, geridos exclusivamente através desta nova solução. Adicionalmente, uma vez que a plataforma em questão é uma solução colaborativa, tornou-se premente envolver, de forma ativa, outras entidades da cadeia de abastecimento, tais como fornecedores, operadores logísticos e despachantes. Os resultados foram muito satisfatórios: em 11 meses, 63% das ordens de compra de fornecedores de regiões como a India, Paquistão, Bangladesh e Sri Lanka, e 29% das ordens de compra de fornecedores da região da China, foram colocadas através desta plataforma. Relativamente ao envolvimento ativo de outras entidades da cadeia de abastecimento, as taxas de on-boarding foram as seguintes: (i) 100% dos fornecedores da região da India, Paquistão, Bangladesh e Sri Lanka foram on-boarded (de um total de 79 fornecedores) (ii) 23% dos fornecedores da região da China foram on-boarded (de um total de 418 fornecedores); (iii) 100% dos Operadores Logísticos foram on-boarded (de um total de 3 operadores logísticos); (iv) 100% dos Despachantes foram on-boarded (de um total de 2 entidades despachantes).

This report covers literature studies of Logistics, Warehousing (as one of the important components in the logistics chain) as well as Just-in-time (JIT) principles (as an important focus recently in logistics operations). The spareparts distribution function of a South African motorcar manufacturing business is then investigated and positioned within the logistics chain and warehousing concept, using the information from the literature study. The implementation of Just-in-time (JIT) principles with regards to specific components of the logistics chain is then investigated in the form of case studies. While most literature only discuss the implementation of JIT principles in a manufacturing environment, this report highlights the fact that substantial benefits can also be obtained by implementing JIT principles in a non-manufacturing environment. A transformação digital em curso é um produto da rápida e imparável evolução dos Sistemas de Informação que são um fator transformador do modo de funcionamento das organizações. As novas ferramentas digitais são elementos transformadores que permitem o redesign, otimização e automatização dos processos. Estas questões serão particularmente relevantes nas organizações que terão de ter a flexibilidade necessária a uma rápida adaptação, sob pena de perderem competitividade. Business Process Management (BPM) e Robotic Process Automation (RPA) são dois dos atores desta transformação. A combinação de sinergias entre a metodologia BPM e a tecnologia RPA, em determinados contextos, poderá revelar-se benéfica e incrementar o potencial de automatização do RPA. A área de Gestão de Recursos Humanos foi identificada como contexto, enquanto área organizacional, com potencial para automatização de processos. O foco deste trabalho de investigação incide sobre a aplicação do BPM e do RPA à automatização de processos, tendo como objetivo principal propor uma estratégia para a automatização de processos na área de Gestão de Recursos Humanos. Tem sido identificado na comunidade científica a escassez de estudos de propostas sistematizadas de implementação e utilização RPA nas organizações. Como contributo para resolver esta questão, será utilizada a proposta do Design Science Research para desenvolver um referencial de automatização em RPA, que será validado com a sua aplicação em contexto organizacional.
The digital transformation underway is a product of rapid and unstoppable evolution of Information Systems, that are a transforming factor in the way organizations operate. The new digital tools are transforming elements that allow the redesign, optimization and automation of processes. These issues will be particularly relevant in Organizations that will have the necessary flexibility to adapt quickly, otherwise they will lose competitiveness. Business Process Management (BPM) and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) are two of the actors in this transformation. The combination of synergies between BPM methodology and RPA technology, in certain contexts, could be beneficial, increasing the automation potential of RPA. The Human Resources Management area was identified as a context and as an organizational area, with potential for process automation. The focus of this research work is on the application of BPM and RPA to process automation, with the main objective of proposing a strategy for process automation in the area of Human Resources Management. It has been identified in the scientific community the scarcity of studies of systematic proposals for the implementation and use of RPA. As a contribution to resolve this issue, the proposal of Design Science Research will be used to develop an automation framework in RPA, which will be validated with its application in an organizational context.
