Résumé :
This study aims to develop and evaluate an automated manual transmission (AMT) for agricultural tractors with high efficiency and high convenience by using electric actuators. An AMT system to control manual-type shuttle gearboxes and transmissions for tractors is developed by adding a shuttle shifting actuator, a clutch actuator, and a control system to a conventional manual transmission (MT). The clutch actuator is designed using an electric motor and a reduction gear. The AMT control system is developed and experimental tests are conducted to evaluate the performance of the AMT. The results of the performance of the actuator position control demonstrate that the shuttle shifting actuator and clutch actuator are controlled appropriately, achieving a maximum overshoot of less than 5% and 0%, a settling time of less than 0.500 s and 1.50 s, and a steady-state error of less than 1% and 1%, respectively. The performance of the automatic forward and reverse control demonstrates a shift control time of less than 2.50 s and target revolutions per minute (RPM) reaching time of less than 3.00 s. Thus, AMT systems for tractors can be easily developed by applying shuttle shifting actuators, clutch actuators, and a control system to conventional manual transmissions.

Résumé :
It is difficult to gain the ideal effect by using a single control method for shifting process due to many influence factors of synchromesh shifting process in Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). Synchromesh shifting process is divided into two stages. One is stage of eliminating the gap of synchronizer, and the other is the slipping stage of synchromesh. The paper mainly analyses the control process of eliminating the gap of synchronizer. By adopting the adaptive control to reduce the shock of initial shifting stage, it can reduce impact and abrasion wear, and improve the quality of whole shifting process.

Résumé :
This paper is concerned with the problem of position tracking control for the motor-driven gear-shift actuating mechanism for electro-mechanical automated manual transmissions (AMT). It is well known that torque interruption is an inherent flaw of AMT. As shift duration directly affects the torque interruption interval, shift quality can be improved by minimizing the duration of the shift. To realize rapid and precise gear-shift control, an optimal discrete-time preview position control scheme is proposed. The proposed control scheme consists of state-feedback control, a discrete integrator, and preview feed-forward control. Instead of the traditional difference method, the state transformation method is utilized to construct the augmented error system such that the augmented system can be kept in a simple form. The H∞ performance index is employed to reduce the effect of the shifting load disturbance during the gear-shifting process. The controller gains are obtained by solving a linear matrix inequality (LMI). Simulation and test bench results all show that the proposed preview control algorithm has better dynamic response and adaptability under different loads compared to the optimal linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller and the standard PID controller.

This paper presents a motor position control algorithm for an automated manual transmission (AMT) of the agricultural tractor, based on modified linear quadratic tracking (LQT). In this paper, the modified LQT is derived from the conventional LQT by applying the Luenberger observer in order to design an output feedback controller. A dynamic model of the actuator is derived to represent characteristics of the worm geared DC motor and the proposed control algorithm is applied and tuned with the model. The proposed position control algorithm of the worm geared motor using the modified LQT can improve disturbance rejection performance without changing the hardware configuration of the AMT. Résumé :
Shift-scheduling calibration of automatic transmission (AT) vehicles is vital for both driving experience and automobile industry. Shifting schedules are usually calibrated with the consideration of fuel economy and drivability while neglecting the individual driving preference. In this work, we propose to exemplify the individual shifting preference by integrating the manual transmission (MT) shifting habit into the AT shift-scheduling calibration, where the habit is reflected as the shifting points and is available in most automated manual transmission (AMT) vehicles. The automated calibration of AT shifting schedules is directed by using the particle swarm optimization (PSO), during the virtual automobile cycle test, i.e., FTP-72. Candidate shifting-schedules are generated in the overlapped zone of MT shifting points and the space around the base map, and are evaluated on both shifting quality and fuel economy. Through iterations, the generated candidate shift schedules are tested and assessed until the overall performance reach the optimum. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which retains the shifting preferences as well as enhances the performance index by about 5%, 4%, and 2% for the drivers with aggressive, moderate, and mild styles, respectively.

Résumé :
Electric vehicles equipped with automated manual transmission (AMT) provide the potential for improving the power and economic performance. However, due to the direct connection between the driving motor and the input shaft of the transmission, the higher moment of inertia at the input of AMT would lead to a poor shift quality. Based on the dynamic analysis of the engagement process of AMT without synchronizer, the dynamic model of the engagement process was established by using AMESim software. Through the analysis of the engagement process, it was concluded that the higher contact force and longer meshing duration under reverse contacting engagement condition is the main reason for the shift difficulty. In order to improve the shift quality, the influences of the sleeve teeth shape parameters of reverse contacting chamfer on the engagement process were analyzed and the simulation validation was performed. The simulation results showed that reducing the width and increasing the angle of the reverse contacting chamfer can effectively reduce the engagement duration and the contact force impulse, although the vehicle jerk was increased slightly, which did not exceed the most stringent criterion value of 10 m·s-3. Optimization of teeth shape parameters of reverse contacting chamfer can be considered to improve the shift quality of the electric vehicle equipped with an AMT.

Résumé :
Poor ride comfort and shorter clutch life span are the key factors restricting the commercialization of automated manual transmission (AMT). For nonelectrically controlled engines or AMT where cooperative control between the engine and the transmission is not realizable, applying electronically controlled fuel control rod systems (ECFCRS) is an effective way to solve these problems. By applying design software such as CATIA, Matlab and Simulink, and MSC Adams, a suite of optimization design methods for ECFCRS drive mechanisms are developed here. Based on these new methods, design requirements can be analyzed comprehensively and the design scheme can be modified easily, thus greatly shortening the design cycle. The bench tests and real vehicle tests indicate that the system developed achieves preferable engine speed following-up performance and engine speed regulating performance. The method developed has significance as a reference for developing other vehicle systems.

Résumé :
Multi-speed transmission can greatly improve the power and economic performance of electric vehicles (EVs) compared with single-speed transmission. Gear ratio is the key design parameter of multi-speed transmission. Optimizing gear ratios can further improve vehicle performance. Most of the existing optimization methods of gear ratios take the power and economy of vehicles in gear as the optimization objectives, but rarely consider the shift performance of the transmission, such as shift time, friction, and shift jerk. Considering the shift performance in the process of gear ratio optimization can not only optimize the vehicle performance in gear, but also improve the shift performance of the transmission. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization method of gear ratios considering the shift performance. Firstly, a seamless three-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) of EVs is selected as the research object, the structure and the shift process without power interruption of the three-speed AMT are introduced, and the detailed EV simulation model is established. Then, the multi-objective optimization method of gear ratios considering shifting performance is described. Specifically, the acceleration time, energy consumption, and jerk of the vehicle in gear are taken as the objective functions, and the shift time, clutch friction, and the shift jerk are added to the corresponding objective functions, respectively. Finally, the multi-objective optimization algorithm is used to solve the gear ratio optimization problem. The simulation results show optimization of the gear ratios significantly improves the power, economy, and comfort of the vehicle compared with the original. More importantly, compared with the optimization method without shift performance, gear ratios optimized by the proposed optimization method has better shift performance, and the feasibility of the proposed method is verified by simulations.

Résumé :
With the introduction of clutch-by-wire technology, electro-mechanical Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) has comes into existence. This leads the Drivetrain Research Group, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia to design and developed an indigenous drive-by-wire transmission for the future; which is the electro-mechanical dual acting pulley (EMDAP) continuously variable transmission (CVT). The group then designed and developed an indigenous drive-by-wire clutch, i.e. the electro-mechanical friction clutch (EMFC) to be integrated with the EMDAP CVT. However, to effectively electro-mechanically control the friction clutch, the relationship between motor current and clutch torque and normal force need to be fundamentally studied and established. The purpose of this paper is to set-up an experimental test rig to study electro-mechanical friction clutch actuator behavior and evaluate the correlation between the DC motor current, clutch torque and normal force of the friction clutch. Results from the correlation study will allow researchers not only to measure but also to later control the clutch clamping force using current sensor which relatively would be much simpler and less expensive than using force sensor.

Résumé :
A study on green vehicle was introduced and promoted to minimize the problem of air pollution caused by emissions of conventional vehicle. Green mobility are vehicles with low fuel/energy consumption and low/zero exhaust gas emission, these vehicles are like hybrid, battery powered, and fuel cell electric vehicle that can be enhanced to be more efficient than the conventional vehicles through a new design and development of power transmission system. Power transmission system for green and lightweight vehicles consists of different components like gear box, propeller shaft, differential and final drive. In this review more emphasis is given to gear box due to some reasons: firstly, it is one of the heaviest component of the power train system and as a result weight reduction is critically needed to increase the efficiency of the vehicle. Secondly, gearshift takes place therefore, torque interruption needs to minimize. The use of simulation software's i. e. Mat lab, AMEsim, cruise software and other similar programs can simulate high-efficiency power transmission system. The results from the simulation software will be validated by experimental tests on test rigs. One way of minimizing fuel consumption is to reduce the weight of the gearbox by 10% reduction in vehicle weight can improved fuel economy by about 5-7%. As different researchers confirm that to have high vehicle efficiency the type of the transmission they used matters. A vehicle using automated manual transmission (AMT) and dual clutch transmission is more efficient in terms of less energy loss and gearshift comfort.

Résumé :
Ultrasonic Non-destructive testing is a well known technique for inspecting fiber reinforced composite structures however; its capability is severely limited by the high attenuation in thick and multi layer structures. Guided wave ultrasonic inspection has been reported to be useful tool for quantitative identification of composite structures. It takes advantage of tailoring / generating desired ultrasonic wave modes (Symmetric and anti-symmetric) for improved transmission through the composite structure. For this, guided waves have to be generated selectively by precisely placing transducer at an angle to the test surface. Automation of two axis fixture for transmission and reception of transducers have to be used for avoiding manual errors. The captured signals have to be processed in order to extract useful information from the received ultrasonic signals. The proposed project aims at developing automated guided wave inspection methods along with digital signal processing for generating dispersion curves for thick composited. Using test laminates with implanted defects, methodology for thick composite inspection with guided wave ultrasonic’s will be established. For this data will be captured and analyzed using Labview software.

Résumé :
This paper compares several kinds of methods for motor speed synchronization control, which plays an important role in gear shifting of emerging clutchless automated manual transmissions for battery electric vehicles and other powertrain systems for hybrid electric vehicles. Specifically, four controllers, namely, proportional-integral control, disturbance observer–based proportional control, integral sliding mode–based proportional control, and disturbance observer–based act-and-wait control, are compared in transient responses regarding settling time, overshoot, and steady-state error. Each is formulated by combining one nominal controller for speed tracking and another for disturbance compensation. For disturbance observer–based proportional control, model-based determination of the feedback gain and disturbance observer gain is discussed. Simulations and experiments are carried out to study effects of different controller parameter settings and evaluate performances of different methods under different operation conditions with disturbances and uncertainties like plant parameter drift, communication time delay, unknown load torques, and so on. Based on the results, it is advised that disturbance observer–based proportional control with the reference signal set as the nominal speed trajectory be used in practice, since it comes with merits of few controller parameters to be determined as well as robust, consistent, and satisfactory performances.

Résumé :
An automated mechanical transmission (AMT) is proposed as a new soft starter for medium-scale belt conveyors in this paper. The AMT is used to start the belt conveyor and shift gears step by step to make the belt conveyor accelerate softly. Based on analyzing common soft-starting acceleration curves, a segmented belt acceleration curve is proposed as a new soft-starting acceleration curve. By analyzing the AMT soft-starting system, the system modeling is built and the AMT output shaft’s angular acceleration is proposed to be controlled to control the belt acceleration. The AMT soft-starting simulation model is established in the environment of AMESim, and simulation results of the soft-starting process from the first to eighth gear positions are given. The main parameter curves of the AMT soft-starting system including the belt, driving pulley, and AMT output shaft are analyzed. The simulation model can indicate the viscoelastic property of the belt. The simulation results prove that the segmented belt acceleration is appropriate for a medium-scale belt conveyor and provide a theoretical and reasonable basis for using an AMT as a soft starter.

Résumé :
5G is the new generation of 3GPP-based cellular communications that provides remarkable connectivity capabilities and extreme network performance to mobile network operators and cellular users worldwide. The rollout process of a new capacity layer (cell) on top of the existing previous cellular technologies is a complex process that requires time and manual effort from radio planning-engineering teams and parameter optimization teams. When it comes to optimum configuration of the 5G gNB cell parameters, the maximization of achieved coverage (RSRP) and quality (SINR) of the served mobile terminals are of high importance for achieving the very high data transmission rates expected in 5G. This process strongly relies on network measurements that can be even more insightful when mobile terminal localization information is present. This information can be generated by modern algorithmic techniques that act on the cellular network signaling measurements. Configuration algorithms can then use these measurements combined with location information to optimize various cell deployment parameters such as cell azimuth. Furthermore, data-driven approaches are shown in the literature to outperform traditional, model-based algorithms as they can automate the optimization of parameters while specializing in the characteristics of each individual geographical zone. In the context of the above, in this paper, we tested the automated network reconfiguration schemes based on unsupervised learning and applied statistics for cell azimuth steering. We compared network metric clustering and geospatial clustering to be used as our baseline algorithms that are based on K-means with the proposed scheme—hybrid network and spatial clustering based on hierarchical DBSCAN. Each of these algorithms used data generated by an initial scenario to produce cell re-configuration actions and their performance was then evaluated on a validated simulation platform to capture the impact of each set of gNB reconfiguration actions. Our performance evaluation methodology was based on statistical distribution analysis for RSRP and SINR metrics for the reference scenario as well as for each reconfiguration scheme. It is shown that while both baseline algorithms improved the overall performance of the network, the proposed hybrid network–spatial scheme greatly outperformed them in all statistical criteria that were evaluated, making it a better candidate for the optimization of 5G capacity layers in modern urban environments.

Résumé :
A countershaft brake is used as a transmission brake (TB) to realize synchronous shifting by reducing the automated mechanical transmission (AMT) input shaft’s speed rapidly. This process is performed to reduce shifting time and improve shifting quality for heavy-duty vehicles equipped with AMT without synchronizer. To improve controlled synchronous shifting, the AMT input shaft’s equivalent resistance torque and the TB’s characteristic parameters are studied. An AMT dynamic model under neutral gear position is analyzed during the synchronous control interval. A dynamic model of the countershaft brake is discussed, and its control flow is given. The parameter identification method of the AMT input shaft’s equivalent resistance torque is given on the basis of the least squares algorithm. The parameter identification of the TB’s characteristic parameters is proposed on the basis of the recursive least squares method (RLSM). Experimental results show that the recursive estimations of the TB’s characteristic parameters under different duty cycles of the TB solenoid valve, including brake torque estimation, estimation accuracy, and braking intensity estimation, can be effectively estimated. The research provides some reliable evidence to further study the synchronous shifting control schedule for heavy-duty vehicles with AMT.

Résumé :
Abstract. The longest ozone column measurement series are based on the Dobson sun spectrophotometers developed in the 1920s by Gordon B. W. Dobson. These instruments still constitute an important part of the World Meteorological Organization's global network due to their optical qualities and ruggedness. The primary drawback of this instrument is the effort needed for its manual operation. In industrialized and some less developed countries, most stations have made the choice to replace the Dobson by the automated Brewer sun spectrophotometers, but some are still relying on the Dobson instrument. One of them is the Arosa station where both instrument types are run in parallel. Here, an automated version of the Dobson instrument was developed and implemented recently. In the present paper, the results of the analysis of simultaneous measurements from pairs of Dobson instruments that were either collocated at Arosa or Davos or operated one at each location are presented for four distinct time periods: 1992–2012 – manual vs. manual operation of collocated Dobson instruments (MMC); 2012–2013 – manual vs. automated operation of collocated Dobson instruments (MAC); 2012–2019 – automated vs. automated operation of collocated Dobson instruments (AAC); 2016–2019 – automated vs. automated operation of distant Dobson instruments (AAD). The direct comparison of two instruments using the standard operation procedure during the MMC period gives a metric necessary to validate the automated version of Dobson instruments. The direct comparison of two collocated instruments using the standard manual operation procedure reveals random differences of coincident observations with a standard deviation of ∼ 0.45 % and monthly mean differences between −1.0 % and +0.8 %. In most cases the observed biases are not statistically significant. The same analysis of two automated Dobson instruments yields significantly smaller standard deviation of ∼ 0.25 % and biases of between −0.7 % and 0.8 %. This demonstrates that the repeatability has improved with the automation, while the systematic differences are only marginally smaller. The analysis of the AAD period of coincident measurements from the distant sites Arosa and Davos reveals a small positive bias (not significant) compatible with the 250 m altitude difference. The description of the automated data acquisition and control of the Dobson instrument is presented in a separate paper (Stübi et al., 2020).

Résumé :
Manual gear shifting is often used as an example of an automated (vs. controlled) process in driving. The present study provided an empirical evaluation of this assumption by evaluating sign detection and recall performance of novice and experienced drivers driving manual shift and automatic transmission cars in a downtown area requiring frequent gear shifting. The results showed that manual gear shifting significantly impaired sign detection performance of novice drivers using manual gears compared with novice drivers using an automatic transmission, whereas no such differences existed between the two transmission types for experienced drivers. The results clearly demonstrate that manual gear shifting is a complex psychomotor skill that is not easily (or quickly) automated and that until it becomes automated, it is an attention-demanding task that may impair other monitoring aspects of driving performance. Actual or potential applications of this research include a reevaluation of the learning process in driving and the need for phased instruction in driving from automatic gears to manual gears.
