Résumé :
This book deals with the 1980s – the “golden decade” of Hong Kong pop culture – in which a cosmopolitan lifestyle of pop and chic emerged in the city. Bookended by two major historical incidents, the 1980s will probably enter the annals of Hong Kong history as the decade that defined its future after reversion to Mainland China. Having witnessed and experienced the rise of Hong Kong pop culture to unprecedented heights in this decade, the author enhances its context through a story about his own personal belongings. Examining popular genres including television, film, music, fashion, disco and city magazine, this book teases out the distinctive aspects of Hong Kong pop culture that defined (his) Hong Kong. As Hong Kong has been undergoing drastic changes in recent years, it is necessary to point toward new imaginaries by re-examining its development. Toward this end, this book will shed light on an important research area of Hong Kong Studies as an academic discipline.

Résumé :
Through a close reading of several works by contemporary Hong Kong author Dung Kai-Cheung, and particularly his recent novelWorks and Creations, this chapter examines how Dung deploys a dialectics of anticipatory loss and belated recognition to comment not only on the status of contemporary Hong Kong but also on the process of fiction-writing itself. The analysis draws on the precisely inverse Freudian concepts of the fetish and of deferred action, which approach the present through the prism of either an anticipated future loss or a belated reassessment of a past event, while also reflecting more broadly on the relationship between temporality and narration.

Jao, Y. C. The Asian Financial Crisis and the Ordeal of Hong Kong. Praeger, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400615252.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Victim, not instigator of the Asian Financial Crisis, Hong Kong was the only economy that succeeded in defending its fully convertible currency, indeed its entire financial system, against speculators, but the price it paid for success has been deep recession. Jao gives an objective, even-handed account and analysis. Without political or ideological preconsiderations he shows how Hong Kong authorities handled their intervention in the equity market in August 1998. Explaining the conventional wisdom that no fixed exchange rate regime can hold out for long against massive speculation. He goes further to show that Hong Kong contributed not only to the eventual easing of the AFC, but to economic stability throughout Asia as well. Jao opens with a discussion of the nature, causes, and consequences of the AFC. After an overview of Hong Kong's economic and financial fundamentals on the eve of the crisis, he examines the impact it had up close. He examines the massive speculation against the Hong Kong dollar, explaining why speculators were defeated. The AFC's impact on the assets market are also explored. He also analyzes the impact on the financial sector and the real economy. Jao studies and answers two hard questions: why was the economic downturn so severe and why was the territory initially a laggard in economic recovery? He then takes up China's role, and presents an objective, balanced view of Hong Kong's money and finance under Chinese sovereignty, followed by a discussion of how China herself coped with the AFC. The book concludes with an in-depth discussion of the lessons the AFC has taught us and the author's reflections on post-AFC issues.

Résumé :
This chapter reviews efforts to examine the construction and content of media products, and the role of the mass media in the language policymaking process, with a particular focus on framing in mass media coverage. The authors first elaborate what they mean by the term framing. Then they illustrate how the concept of framing can help researchers to explore the media’s mediation of language policymaking in three specific debates: the dialect crisis in China; high-stakes English examinations in China; and medium of instruction policy, with particular attention to the use of English, Cantonese, and Putonghua in Hong Kong and the use of English and Spanish in the US state of Arizona. The chapter concludes with suggestions for expanding research on the role of mass media in language policymaking.

Shea, Jeanne, Katrina Moore et Hong Zhang, dir. Beyond Filial Piety : Rethinking Aging and Caregiving in Contemporary East Asian Societies. Berghahn Books, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3167/9781789207880.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Known for a tradition of Confucian filial piety, East Asian societies have some of the oldest and most rapidly aging populations on earth. Today these societies are experiencing unprecedented social challenges to the filial tradition of adult children caring for aging parents at home. Marshalling mixed methods data, this volume explores the complexities of aging and caregiving in contemporary East Asia. Questioning romantic visions of a senior’s paradise, chapters examine emerging cultural meanings of and social responses to population aging, including caregiving both for and by the elderly. Themes include traditional ideals versus contemporary realities, the role of the state, patterns of familial and non-familial care, social stratification, and intersections of caregiving and death. Drawing on ethnographic, demographic, policy, archival, and media data, the authors trace both common patterns and diverging trends across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and Korea.

Song, Weijie. Mapping Modern Beijing. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190200671.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Mapping Modern Beijing investigates five methods of representing Beijing- a warped hometown, a city of snapshots and manners, an aesthetic city, an imperial capital in comparative and cross-cultural perspective, and a displaced city on the Sinophone and diasporic postmemory—by authors traveling across mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas Sinophone and non-Chinese communities. The metamorphosis of Beijing’s everyday spaces and the structural transformation of private and public emotions unfold Manchu writer Lao She’s Beijing complex about a warped native city. Zhang Henshui’s popular snapshots of fleeting shocks and everlasting sorrows illustrate his affective mapping of urban transition and human manners in Republican Beijing. Female poet and architect Lin Huiyin captures an aesthetic and picturesque city vis-à-vis the political and ideological urban planning. The imagined imperial capital constructed in bilingual, transcultural, and comparative works by Lin Yutang, Princess Der Ling, and Victor Segalen highlights the pleasures and pitfalls of collecting local knowledge and presenting Orientalist and Cosmopolitan visions. In the shadow of World Wars and Cold War, a multilayered displaced Beijing appears in the Sinophone postmemory by diasporic Beijing natives Liang Shiqiu, Taiwan sojourners Zhong Lihe and Lin Haiyin, and émigré martial-arts novelist Jin Yong in Hong Kong. Weijie Song situates Beijing in a larger context of modern Chinese-language urban imaginations, and charts the emotional topography of the city against the backdrop of the downfall of the Manchu Empire, the rise of modern nation-state, the 1949 great divide, and the formation of Cold War and globalizing world. Drawing from literary canons to exotic narratives, from modernist poetry to chivalric fantasy, from popular culture to urban planning, this book explores the complex nexus of urban spaces, archives of emotions, and literary topography of Beijing in its long journey from imperial capital to Republican city and to socialist metropolis.
