Résumé :
We provide commentary on the article by Austern (2017) in which several composite PTSD treatment cases with veteran clients are presented. Written Exposure Therapy (WET) was implemented in each case, with varying levels of success. We provide additional background on the development of WET to provide readers with a better understanding of how this treatment was created. We also describe the available efficacy data supporting the use of WET as well as describe efficacy studies that are currently underway. Lastly, we comment on Austern’s use of WET in the three composite veteran cases that are described.

Résumé :
<p> Austern (2017) presents three composite Veteran case studies using Written Exposure Therapy (WET; Sloan, Lee, Litwack, Sawyer, &amp; Marx, 2013) as a first-level intervention in a larger stepped-care model for PTSD. The relatively minimalist WET intervention may be appealing to Veterans with PTSD who have opted not to seek out more time and therapist-intensive treatments. In addition, writing has been used effectively in other protocols as a method of achieving exposure to memories of traumatic experiences. Austern’s three cases demonstrate a range of success in using WET to engage Veterans in evidence-based treatment and reduce suffering associated with PTSD. We comment on the current status of the research literature on stepped-care models for PTSD, the potential value of incorporating Motivational Interviewing principles and specific homework tasks into these efforts, and the promise that abbreviated interventions and stepped-care approaches may hold for helping clinicians manage their clinical caseloads and avoid burnout.</p><p> </p>

Abstract We propose an extension of the inclusive breakup model of Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)] for the evaluation of incomplete fusion (ICF) cross sections in nuclear reactions induced by two-body projectiles. The main idea, adopted in other methods, consists in the separation of the participant-target optical potential into its direct reaction and compound reaction components, the latter being responsible for the ICF contribution of the total nonelastic breakup cross section. Preliminary comparison with experimental data shows encouraging results.

The mentality for Turkish political morality, based on the structural diseases of the Turkish public administration inherited from the Ottoman Empire, has its own peculiarity. Studies on political and administrative ethics within the discipline of public governance in Turkey, date back to after 1980. This study aimed to explain which moral behavior that the executives exhibit in Turkish public governance. For this purpose, an questionnaire was conducted on a sample group of 110 people consisting of Pamukkale University administrators, based on the case studies of Steinberg and Austern. The results analyzed after the research were evaluated according to these analyzes, the executive personnel in Turkish public management exhibit a more duty-ridden moral attitude.

Résumé :
In "Written Exposure Therapy as Step One in Reducing the Burden of PTSD: The Composite Cases of "Alex,' 'Bruno,' and 'Charles'"(Austern, 2017), I presented three composite case study examples of how veterans suffering from PTSD may benefit from written exposure to their trauma memories. For one case (Bruno), Written Exposure Therapy (WET) was the initial treatment in a stepped-care approach that culminated in Prolonged Exposure therapy. However, for the two others, WET became a standalone treatment. In two commentaries on the cases, Cigrang and Peterson (2017) and Sloan and Marx (2017) discuss the development and efficacy of WET, WET implementation strategies, and practice implications of WET (e.g., the potential to reduce clinician burnout). In my response to these commentaries, I aim to contribute to the bourgeoning discussion of how mental health providers can best incorporate this promising writing-based treatment (WET) into their existing approaches to working with veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). My response will address themes raised by my composite case studies and by the commentaries, including how stepped-care service delivery models may have the potential to make PTSD care more efficient.

The paper explores the use and impact of conceptual metaphors in the graphic novel City of Glass published by Paul Auster as a free-standing story in 1985. Two years later Auster turned it into the first part of The New York Trilogy, which has since become one of the most iconic works of postmodern fiction. Artists Paul Karasik and David Mazzucchelli have adapted Auster’s novella into a graphic novel and their version figures on the list of the best comic books in the 20th century. The aim of this paper is to examine how the two artists’ use of conceptual metaphors has elicited the visual dimension of Auster’s novel, conveyed its philosophical ideas and enriched its emotional effect.

Résumé :
We propose the use of neutron poisons in reactions induced by radioactive beams as a test of theoretical models aiming to relate neutron capture in nuclei with neutron surrogate reactions such as ([Formula: see text]) reactions. We exploit the approximations necessary to obtain a direct relation between the two reactions: surrogate versus neutron capture. We also show how this is intimately related to the momentum distribution of the neutron within the deuteron. The models we use are based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. Such theories were developed in the 1980s by Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32 (1985) 431], Udagawa and Tamura [Phys. Rev. C 24 (1981) 1348] and Hussein and McVoy [Nucl. Phys. A 445 (1985) 124]. We use these theories to derive an expression for the proton yield in the reaction [Formula: see text]. The capture reaction [Formula: see text] is then extracted using reasonable approximations. By recalling an old method proposed by Serber [Phys. Rev. 80 (1950) 1098; Proc. Roy. Soc. A 208 (1951) 559] we explain how the momentum distribution of neutrons within the deuteron will depend on the short-range dependence of the nucleon–nucleon force. The relevance of our work to nucleosynthesis in the rapid neutron capture process is emphasized.

Résumé :
The aim of the following contribution is to analyze the intertextual relation between Paul Auster’s "Ghosts" (1986) and Edgar Allan Poe short story William Wilson (1839). This article studies different aspects that Paul Auster’s novel has as a reinterpretation and rewriting of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story. Auster creates an intertextual relation with Poe’s narration in order to introduce certain aspects of his fiction such as the issues of identity, the concept of the double and the construction of Auster’s theory of writing. In this sense, this proposal presents an interpretation of Auster’s "Ghosts" as an intertextual and postmodern reading of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story.

Résumé :
The subject of the article is the 2006 novel Travels in the Scriptorium by Paul Auster, which contains an embedded, alternative history of the USA. The article aims to demonstrate that Auster’s novel offers a revision of two essential myths of the American nation. The precise moment in the history of the USA that Auster’s novel reinvents is the time before the Mexican War and before taking over the Southwest and California. The Mexican War and its political consequences marked the transition of the USA from a republic upholding its libertarian and progressive ideals to an invading imperial power. The shift in the American policy toward its neighboring nations and peoples is reflected in Auster’s novel in the presentation of the westward expansion as a brutal invasion. Auster’s novel heavily revises the two formative myths of the American state, the myth of the West and the “errand in the wilderness,” with Manifest Destiny as its later incarnation justifying the imperialist mission. The wilderness itself is divested of spiritual significance, desacralized, as the Alien Territories are converted into the arena of carnage and indiscriminate slaughter. It is unreservedly sacrificed to the interests of the emerging imperialist enterprise, which is nothing less than the ultimate consequence of the original Puritan venture—the taming of the wilderness and the creation of a model Christian state for the rest of the world to admire.

Throughout this essay, I will show the characters of Paul Auster's New York Trilogy moving between modernism and postmodernism, and discuss the way some of them epitomize either largely modernist or postmodernist epistemologies. My purpose is to offer a reconstruction of Auster's dialogue across both, and I will resist situating the novelist in either the modern or the postmodern camp. I see him as rather watching from a distance, while his characters scour the terrain (both terrains, as a matter of fact) for him. My conclusion is that Auster seems to acknowledge the inevitability of inhabiting the cultural space of the postmodern, while staking out a claim to question, or even to challenge, some of its presumptions. While modernism still holds a powerful spell for the protagonists ofCity of GlassandGhosts(less so for the latter), the narrator ofThe Locked Roomposits the inextricability of embracing our contemporary sensibility, the postmodern, without necessarily rejecting altogether what went before. Auster associates modernism largely with the secluded, invisible, despicable Fanshawe, whose spell and influence over him the narrator of the third novel of the trilogy manages to break.

Résumé :
Paul Auster, one of the most distinguished contemporary American writers, creates a multi-layered narrative within his novel Man in the Dark. Published in 2008, this literary work addresses essential themes and concerns relating to American history as well as social and political agendas of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. Precisely the events of September 11, which dramatically added a new dimension to the trauma studies, lie in the core of the Auster’s narrative. The author besides focusing on the effects of a traumatic experience on a human being, creates an alternative vision of history that pushes the reader to question the essence of existence. By merging countless narratives, both personal and national, the author initiates a journey of healing for his characters, ultimately guiding them toward recovery. Thus, one of the major focuses of this article will be to follow the evolution of traumatized personalities within the frames of current trauma studies. On the other hand, investigating the subtle bond between national and personal traumas will illuminate the reciprocal relationship between collective memory and individual experience, shedding light on the profound ways in which historical events can shape personal narratives. Hence the article seeks to disentangle the intricate connections between history, memory, and healing, offering a comprehensive exploration of Auster's contribution to the understanding of the human predicament.

Résumé :
In The Music of Chance, Paul Auster establishes his postmodern appropriation of Sartrean existentialism. His protagonist has been subject to a number of literary studies: while some critics believe him to be an existentially conceived postmodern agent, others have considered him to be the embodiment of the American myth or a Bakhtinean picaro. However, this paper addresses the question of this protagonist’s multifaceted identity. Through the application of Derrida’s deconstruction to a set of binary oppositions in Auster’s narrative, this study aims to prove that not only we cannot attribute one singular meaning to the narrative, but also no singular identity can be ascribed to the protagonist. By deconstructing the binary oppositions of chance/choice, freedom/responsibility, and absurdity/meaning, this thesis attempts to prove that neither does a hierarchical superiority exist in any of the opposing ideas nor can they be ultimately defined as contradictory. Hence, the clear-cut meaning behind the narrative and specifically the protagonist’s actions are questioned. This study concludes that Auster, through the amalgamation of postmodernism and existentialism, has created a protagonist of multifaceted identity, or, a postmodern absurd hero: an absurd hero who finds his own meaning amidst the absurdity of the world, realizes the value of his reaction to contingent occurrences as his choice, and eventually finds his freedom in the responsibility he takes for these choices. Auster’s innovation in this novel is creating a postmodern hero on his existential quest for identity who rises amidst the absurdity of the world. The results of this study suggest that through this creation, Auster aims to guide the readers towards a better humanity in the contemporary postmodern era.

ABSTRACT Stephen Crane’s powerful writing and brief, eventful life have attracted numerous biographers since his death in 1900 at age twenty-eight. Paul Auster’s Burning Boy: The Life and Work of Stephen Crane is the latest biography. Auster, one of America’s most inventive novelists, offers a complete account of Crane’s life, coupled with a detailed appraisal of virtually everything he wrote: novels, short stories, poems, sketches, journalism, and war correspondence. His biographical narrative is engrossing, beautifully written, and psychologically acute. His treatment of Crane’s partner Cora Crane and the other women in Crane’s life is detailed and sympathetic. However, Auster’s comprehensive plot summaries of Crane’s works, included on the assumption that his readers “have never read a word of Crane,” sap some of the pleasure from reading his passionate encomia to Crane’s works.

Résumé :
This article studies the imagery of writing in the work of Paul Auster, as an actual building craft that uses words as its raw-material. Though paying special attention to The New York Trilogy, the article uses several intertextual references, not only from other works by Paul Auster but also from Kafka, Beckett, Melville and Hawthorne. There is freedom inside the closed space of the writing-scene, which is a refuge of endless possibilities, where an alternative universe is created with a perfect order set by imagination. The writer-character builds pages that become the walls of the room that surrounds him, so that the written genesis may grow and expand. The room is like a womb that conceives and gives birth to the written work, after a gestation in solitary confinement. The writer is the creator of a cosmogony, using the power of genesis revealed in the solitude of the room. In Auster’s work, the building of the written work is similar to the ordered building of an imaginary universe. Nevertheless, the writer can also be, in another context, a creator of lethal vacuum, describing a caogony, throwing the universe he has conceived into disorder, conjuring the wall of death around him and his characters. The writer-character in constant self-reflection is like an inexperienced God, whose hands may originate either cosmos or chaos, life or death, hence Auster’s recurring meditation on the work and the power of writing, at the same time an autobiography and a self-criticism.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper deals with the reflection of Lacanian post-structuralist psychoanalysis in Paul Auster’s novel Oracle Night, with respect to the phenomenon of writer’s block. The paper argues that Auster’s novel is remarkably synchronized with the theoretical perspectives proposed by the noted psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan, as the root of his protagonist’s inability to write is linked to the medium of written discourse, and the obstacles which the protagonist of his story faces are thus put within the confines of the protagonist’s psyche. Writer’s block is thus being examined with respect to the Lacanian concept known as the chain of signification, as it is much more noticeable in writers because their primary conduit for describing the exterior and interior world is discourse in its written form. Auster exceptionally mirrors Lacan’s view of a writer’s psyche and vividly explores the foundation of the inability to write with respect to the symbolic realm of human experience.

Résumé :
AbstractOvarian dissection of Glossina austeni Newstead, G. brevipalpis Newstead, G. morsitans morsitans Westwood and G. pallidipes Austen shows that there are significant interspecific differences in egg-follicle lengths. Differences between G. brevipalpis and G. pallidipes are slight as are those between G. austeni and G. m. morsitans, but the former two species have significantly larger eggs at all ages examined than the latter two. Egg-follicle length is positively related to species size (measured as wing vein length) but only weakly related to the size of individuals within a species. In the ovarian dissection technique for ageing tsetse flies, nulliparous females are usually divided into 0A (one to four days) and OB (five to eight days) categories, depending on whether the first egg follicle is less or more than 0.6 mm in length. The results presented, however, show that at four days the first egg follicle is about 1 mm in length in G. pallidipes and G. brevipalpis and 0.77 mm in length in G. m. morsitans and G. austeni. Thus, application of the 0.6 mm, four-day threshold will result in severe under-estimation of the proportion of females of the former two species of less than five days of age in a population.

Résumé :
Nowadays, literary criticism tries to evaluate the literary work by fitting it into a certain established theory. Instead, this essay focuses on the original dialogues in Jane Austens novel Emma to give a pragmatic testimonial of how revolutionary Jane Austen is in showing the shifting power dynamics between Emma and her friend Harriet Smith through seemingly easy-spoken exchange. By paying attention to three specific passages in the novel, this essay analyses the authors use of words, tone and punctuation in conversations between the pair of friends. The analysis enables the assessment of their characteristics at different stages of the novel and their consequent change in positions in terms of power dynamics. From Harriets initial unsteadiness and Emmas dominance to obtaining relevant balance, this essay reveals Austens construction of power dynamics between characters as variables that maintain conservation. The consequential function of such design is that the establishment of power dynamics helps to distribute authority and exert influences on the characters behaviour, thereby presenting the plot development and solid personal growth of characters.

Résumé :
The works of American novelist Paul Auster (1947- ) are uniquely concerned with the mythology of self, metanarrative and the role gender plays in these transactions. In his earliest works, The New York Trilogy (1985-1986) and In the Country of Last Things (1987), Auster uses genre conventions and styles (for the former, detective novels; for the latter, dystopian fiction) to interrogate these preconceptions of self-mythology and the role of gender within these genres, subverting tropes and traits of these works to comment upon them. In the following, we investigate these works in depth along these themes, conducting a close textual analysis from the framework of Freudian and Lacanian theories of psychoanalysis and poststructuralism. By investigating the roles of women in The New York Trilogy and In the Country of Last Things, we hope to illuminate Auster’s uniquely postmodernist, deconstructive approach to the psychological imperatives women are socialized into within American society, and how they are informed by narrative and mythology. The role of women, from the absent trophies of The New York Trilogy to the central voice of sanity of Anna in In the Country of Last Things, posits women as a societal superego whose goal it is to keep the destructive, nihilistic id-like impulses of men in check.

Résumé :
When the prophetic seer was asked whether this boy [Narcissus] would live to a ripe old age, he replied: ‘Yes, if he does not come to know himself.’Unwittingly, he [Narcissus] desired himself, and was himself the object of his own approval, at once seeking and sought … But he could not lay hold upon himself … Poor foolish boy, why vainly grasp at the fleeting image that eludes you?For knowledge comes slowly, and when it comes, it is often at great personal expense. There is more than one specter haunting Paul Auster's Ghosts. The novel is, indeed, riddled with specters (puns intended): Auster, as writer, haunts a text where reader and critic alike hopelessly strive to catch an equally elusive meaning. I intend to show, in this paper, how Auster, following a lineage going back to the metafiction writers of the late 1960s, passing by others loosely grouped under the term “post-structuralists,” more importantly heralds a new era, and manages to present, in one novel, a full-fledged allegory of how postmodern writing and reading can successfully negotiate the new challenges presented by the dawning virtual age, focusing on the twin concepts of the mirror and the double and the resulting spectral image(s) produced.

Résumé :
Abstract: For Paul Auster, a room is in essence “the substance of solitude itself”, a spatially defined solitude. In this respect, the phenomenon has transcended its physical limitations and assumed existential and philosophical significance. In his writings, a room is first and foremost an architectural space that a solitary writer occupies. Besides, it is metaphorized as the mind that is the room - an intellectually constructed space; and lastly, it is a place narrated in his stories where his characters meditate and compose, a space that exists in words. This paper studies Auster’s life writings and one of his fictions, Man in the Dark, to present the complexity of the three forms of solitary rooms and their mutual inclusion in intersubjective solitude.

Résumé :
By proposing a quantitative game-theory model of the marriage plot in Jane Austen’s Emma, this essay demonstrates that free-market moral philosophy underwrites Austen’s representation of matrimony and key formal elements of her writing—particularly, matters of verbal profusion. Her famed stylistic “economy” is revealed to be structured by the emerging capitalist economy that Adam Smith theorized in The Wealth of Nations. Establishing the correspondences among several kinds of economy, the essay unites economic and formal approaches to Austen’s work.
