Résumé :
We provide commentary on the article by Austern (2017) in which several composite PTSD treatment cases with veteran clients are presented. Written Exposure Therapy (WET) was implemented in each case, with varying levels of success. We provide additional background on the development of WET to provide readers with a better understanding of how this treatment was created. We also describe the available efficacy data supporting the use of WET as well as describe efficacy studies that are currently underway. Lastly, we comment on Austern’s use of WET in the three composite veteran cases that are described.

Résumé :

Austern (2017) presents three composite Veteran case studies using Written Exposure Therapy (WET; Sloan, Lee, Litwack, Sawyer, & Marx, 2013) as a first-level intervention in a larger stepped-care model for PTSD. The relatively minimalist WET intervention may be appealing to Veterans with PTSD who have opted not to seek out more time and therapist-intensive treatments. In addition, writing has been used effectively in other protocols as a method of achieving exposure to memories of traumatic experiences. Austern’s three cases demonstrate a range of success in using WET to engage Veterans in evidence-based treatment and reduce suffering associated with PTSD. We comment on the current status of the research literature on stepped-care models for PTSD, the potential value of incorporating Motivational Interviewing principles and specific homework tasks into these efforts, and the promise that abbreviated interventions and stepped-care approaches may hold for helping clinicians manage their clinical caseloads and avoid burnout.

Abstract We propose an extension of the inclusive breakup model of Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)] for the evaluation of incomplete fusion (ICF) cross sections in nuclear reactions induced by two-body projectiles. The main idea, adopted in other methods, consists in the separation of the participant-target optical potential into its direct reaction and compound reaction components, the latter being responsible for the ICF contribution of the total nonelastic breakup cross section. Preliminary comparison with experimental data shows encouraging results.

Müller, Luciane Oliveira. « Revisiting Jane Austin : a reading of Karen Joy Fowler's The Jane Austen Book Club ». reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/102206.

Almost two hundred years separate Karen Joy Fowler from Jane Austen. The latter is a great English literary icon, author to six of the best treasured novels in English literature, admired for her style, wit and subtlety in the delineation of her characters and their social relations. The former is a contemporary awarded American Sci-fi and Fantasy writer, author to the novel The Jane Austen Book Club, which is the corpus of the present dissertation. In spite of the wide distance in time, subject matter, and even in literary stature that separates them, both authors are deeply involved in the investigation of human nature and human bonds. The Jane Austen Book Club not only pays homage to Jane Austen, it also offers a rich contrast between life as it was, in the 18th Century, in Austen’s rural England, and as it is now, in Fowler’s present-day sunny California. In Fowler’s novel we meet six interesting characters who undergo different kinds of personal crises. They form a book club and meet monthly, during half a year. In each meeting, they discuss one of Jane Austen´s novels. Each of them is in charge of leading the discussion on one of the novels. Fowler’s book is divided in six chapters, respectively: Jocelyn with Emma, Allegra with Sense and Sensibility, Prudie with Mansfield Park, Grigg with Northanger Abbey, Bernadette with Pride and Prejudice, and Sylvia with Persuasion. The way they interact with their assigned novels tells much not only about them and their circumstances, but also about the world in which they live. The more nostalgic and romantic their notion of Austen’s idealized past becomes, the clearer we can identify the circumstances in present-day life that provoke such reactions. The aim of this dissertation is to present a reading of The Jane Austen Book Club through an approximation with Austen’s work, so as to understand what Fowler’s characters are looking for, and why. The premise is that their quest tells about the world we live in nowadays, and about the difficulties we have in dealing with personal relations. To approach the contrast between the solid fictional world of Jane Austen and the liquid fictional world of Karen Joy Fowler, I rely on the theories presented by Zygmunt Bauman, especially on his use of concepts as fluidity, ethics, velocity, disengagement and fear.

Part One of my dissertation explores Jane Austen’s attitudes towards female readers, as manifested both in the fictionalised scenes of reading in her novels and in her complex and allusive use of her own reading in both the novels and her letters. I contextualise Austen’s novels within eighteenth-century anxieties about reading women and women’s reading, specifically discussing Austen’s interactions with the conservative conduct literature of the mid- to late-eighteenth century. Through a discussion of Austen’s relationship with her literary predecessors, I suggest that her style presupposes a reader familiar with both the allusions she makes and the constraints of propriety within which a female writer must express herself indirectly or allusively. I argue that such a style, itself enacting the dictates of propriety, actually encourages readings that question the conservation ideologies that the novels’ marriage plots appear to support. Part Two examines the responses of female readers to Austen’s novels, to some extent testing the hypothesis set out in the first half, and, in the process, reassessing Jane Austen’s place in female literary history. In these chapters, I consider extra-textual factors, such as the changing cultural status of the novel, the varying significance of Austen’s literary reputation and social pressures on female readers, which play an important role in determining women readers’ responses to Austen. I argue that Austen’s influence on her literary successors and on female literary history needs to be reconceptualised in ways that focus not only on literary influence, but on the culturally-contingent motivations that push female readers towards complicit, oppositional or appropriate readings of a female author. This kind of reassessment elucidates Austen’s relationship to her literary successors as well as challenging the assumptions that underpin existing versions of Austen’s reception history.

Résumé :
An innovative solution for a rapidly deployable shelter for use in austere environments is presented in this paper. The design incorporates a self-erecting dome structure and a compressible, high R-value thermal barrier to enable rapid in-theatre deployment of personnel in harsh environmental conditions. The design concept presented in the paper was originally developed in response to the Army branch of the small business innovative research (SBIR) solicitation topic A11-099. The proposed 400 ft2 shelter meets the design goals of deployment by two people in 20 minutes, capability of withstanding 100 mph winds, and an R value of at least 15. These objectives have been proven via test, analysis, and mechanical demonstration of the key design components and systems. The primary structure consists of eight composite tubes. The tubes are slip-fit into a central hub; each member is similar to a spoke extending outward radially from the hub. A tension cable is run around the outer perimeter of the radial spokes, passing through a fitting at the tip of each spoke, and a protective skin is draped over the structural members. The structure is then elastically deformed via buckling into a dome-shaped structure by tensioning the cable. This allows quick, easy shelter erection from a single location by one person using a winch. The protective skin is then tensioned to the shelter base with adjustable straps. Stakes are not required to support the structure. A scale model of the primary structure was built to demonstrate the controlled buckling of the members to form the main structural components, and the scale model successfully demonstrated deployment in minimal time. A cellular fabric blanket, which uses entrapped air to provide a thermal barrier, is hung from the inside of the structure and is mechanically expanded to maintain the desired cell size. It can then be packed to 1/20th of its deployed volume for transportation. Simulations and tests were used to optimize the cell size and aspect ratio for weight, manufacturability, and R value. Analytical predictions and component-level testing have demonstrated that a system-level R value of 15 is achievable.

Sinclair, Samantha, et Sally Shoop. Automated detection of austere entry landing zones : a “GRAIL Tools” validation assessment. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), août 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/45265.

Résumé :
The Geospatial Remote Assessment for Ingress Locations (GRAIL) Tools software is a geospatial product developed to locate austere entry landing zones (LZs) for military aircraft. Using spatial datasets like land classification and slope, along with predefined LZ geometry specifications, GRAIL Tools generates binary suitability filters that distinguish between suitable and unsuitable terrain. GRAIL Tools combines input suitability filters, searches for LZs at user‐defined orientations, and plots results. To refine GRAIL Tools, we: (a) verified software output; (b) conducted validation assessments using five unpaved LZ sites; and (c) assessed input dataset resolution on outcomes using 30 and 1‐m datasets. The software was verified and validated in California and the Baltics, and all five LZs were correctly identified in either the 30 or the 1‐m data. The 30‐m data provided numerous LZs for consideration, while the 1‐m data highlighted hazardous conditions undetected in the 30‐m data. Digital elevation model grid size affected results, as 1‐m data produced overestimated slope values. Resampling the data to 5 m resulted in more realistic slopes. Results indicate GRAIL Tools is an asset the military can use to rapidly assess terrain conditions.

Résumé :
The trees, developed green spaces, and natural areas within the City of Austin’s 400,882 acres will face direct and indirect impacts from a changing climate over the 21st century. This assessment evaluates the vulnerability of urban trees and natural and developed landscapes within the City Austin to a range of future climates. We synthesized and summarized information on the contemporary landscape, provided information on past climate trends, and illustrated a range of projected future climates. We used this information to inform models of habitat suitability for trees native to the area. Projected shifts in plant hardiness and heat zones were used to understand how less common native species, nonnative species, and cultivars may tolerate future conditions. We also assessed the adaptability of planted and naturally occurring trees to stressors that may not be accounted for in habitat suitability models such as drought, flooding, wind damage, and air pollution. The summary of the contemporary landscape identifies major stressors currently threatening trees and forests in Austin. Major current threats to the region’s urban forest include invasive species, pests and disease, and development. Austin has been warming at a rate of about 0.4°F per decade since measurements began in 1938 and temperature is expected to increase by 5 to 10°F by the end of this century compared to the most recent 30-year average. Both increases in heavy rain events and severe droughts are projected for the future, and the overall balance of precipitation and temperature may shift Austin’s climate to be more similar to the arid Southwest. Species distribution modeling of native trees suggests that suitable habitat may decrease for 14 primarily northern species, and increase for four more southern species. An analysis of tree species vulnerability that combines model projections, shifts in hardiness and heat zones, and adaptive capacity showed that only 3% of the trees estimated to be present in Austin based on the most recent Urban FIA estimate were considered to have low vulnerability in developed areas. Using a panel of local experts, we also assessed the vulnerability of developed and natural areas. All areas were rated as having moderate to moderate-high vulnerability, but the underlying factors driving that vulnerability differed by natural community and between East and West Austin. These projected changes in climate and their associated impacts and vulnerabilities will have important implications for urban forest management, including the planting and maintenance of street and park trees, management of natural areas, and long-term planning.

Long, Wendy, Jesse Doyle, Edith Martinez-Guerra et Christopher Griggs. Effects of impure water sources on early-age properties of calcium sulfoaluminate cements for rapid airfield damage recovery. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), juillet 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/44780.

Résumé :
In austere environments with limited access to clean water, it is advantageous to use nonpotable water for construction (i.e., mixing water for concrete.) In rapid-response situations such as rapid airfield damage recovery (RADR), the use of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements is beneficial for expedient pavement repairs because of their rapid strength gain characteristics. However, the hydration products formed by CSA cements are substantially different from those formed by ordinary portland cement and might react differently to impurities that water sources may contain. A laboratory study component investigated the application of various salts and impure sources of mixing water with commercially available CSA cement-based products. A field component studied the application of naturally occurring impure water sources for RADR. Recommendations are made for implementation of impure mixing water for RADR using commercially available flowable fill and concrete products made with CSA cement.
