Résumé :
Background/aimsDespite electrostimulation being a common adjuvant therapy for non-specific low back pain, the use of Aussie current for muscle contraction is still underreported in the literature. The present study aimed to assess the use of Aussie current in the treatment of chronic, non-specific lumbar pain.MethodsTwenty-four young women with chronic non-specific low back pain were randomly assigned to the Aussie current group or control group. Pain (visual analogue scale and McGill Pain Questionnaire), function (Oswestry Disability Index), trunk muscle resistance (the time the participant remained in a predefined static position) and multifidus muscle thickness (ultrasound images) were analysed bilaterally before, at the end of and 30 days after completing the treatment protocol. The treatment group received 12 sessions of Aussie current over a period of 4 weeks. The electrodes were arranged laterally and bilaterally to the spinous processes of the first and fifth lumbar vertebrae.ResultsThere was a reduction in the pain profile for the Aussie group, as measured by a visual analogue scale and the McGill Pain Questionnaire. There was an increase in trunk muscle resistance and in muscle thickness in the Aussie group when compared to the control group. There were no changes in the Oswestry Disability Index in either group.ConclusionsAussie current resulted in significant improvements in pain, endurance and muscle thickness in women with chronic, non-specific low back pain.

Résumé :
Abstract Background and Purpose. A randomized controlled trial to compare 2 forms of monophasic pulsed currents with 2 forms of burst-modulated, kilohertz-frequency alternating current (“Russian current” and “Aussie current”) was conducted to establish whether different amounts of wrist extensor torque were produced and whether discomfort varied with stimulus type. Subjects. The 32 subjects were adults who were healthy and were drawn from a population of staff and students at La Trobe University. Methods. Each subject received all 4 currents. Maximal electrically induced torque (MEIT) of the wrist extensors was measured for each stimulus type. Relative discomfort of stimulation also was assessed. Results. Russian current elicited lower mean torque than those elicited by Aussie current and monophasic pulsed currents. The Russian and Aussie currents elicited significantly less discomfort than the 2 monophasic pulsed currents. Discussion and Conclusion. When force production and relative discomfort were jointly used as the criteria, Aussie current was found to be more effective than either of the monophasic pulsed currents or Russian current stimulation.

Résumé :
A 2-year greenhouse study was conducted at Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., in 2003 and 2004 to determine drought responses of six bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) cultivars at four irrigation intervals. Cultivars selected from the 2002 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program Bermudagrass Trial were `SWI-1012', `Arizona Common', `Tift No.3', `Tifsport', `Aussie Green', and `Celebration'. Treatments included 5-, 10-, and 15-day irrigation intervals plus a control (irrigated daily). Volumetric soil water content (VSWC) and evapotranspiration (ET) rates were recorded every 3 days. Turfgrass quality (TQ) was observed weekly and root weight was measured at the end of a 6-week study. `Aussie Green' and `Celebration' produced the highest TQ rating (>7) at week 4 when watered daily. After 4 weeks of the 5-day irrigation interval, all cultivars showed unacceptable quality ratings (<7). However, `Aussie Green' and `Celebration' were able to maintain an acceptable TQ rating (7), compared to `Arizona Common' (5.1) and `Tift No.3' (5.8) at week 2 (5-day treatment). `Celebration' produced 114% and 97% greater root weight than `Tifsport' and `Aussie Green', respectively, when pooled across all irrigation treatments. At the 15-day irrigation interval treatment, six bermudagrass cultivars pooled together produced 78%, 22%, and 11% greater root weight vs. control, 5-day, and 10-day treatments, respectively. When pooled for all treatments, `Aussie Green' and `Celebration' VSWC was 5% and 7% lower than `Tift No.3', and ET rates were 26% and 30% greater than `Arizona Common'. Based on these results, irrigating bermudagrass in 5-day intervals should be carefully monitored.

Résumé :
AbstractThis study investigated whether a mental health promotion program delivered by primary school teachers to prevent internalising problems in children had any impact on the teachers' job-related affective wellbeing. Teacher job-related anxiety and job-related depression were measured before teaching the Aussie Optimism program, and after implementation at 12 and 24 months. Schools and teachers were randomised to one of three groups: Aussie Optimism with Teacher Training; Aussie Optimism with Teacher Training and Coaching; or the Usual Care control group, which implemented the regular Western Australian Health Education Curriculum. In all three groups, teachers taught lessons to promote student self-management and interpersonal skills during the last two years of primary school. Teachers in schools in the control group received training in Aussie Optimism after the first year of intervention. Data was collected from 405 primary school teachers in 63 government primary schools. Multiple hierarchical regression analyses showed partial support for the hypotheses, with teachers in the Training and Coaching intervention group reporting significantly lower levels of job-related anxiety at the 12-month assessment and depression at both the 12- and 24-month assessments when compared to teachers in the Usual Care control group. There were no significant differences between teachers in the Training only group and the control group after intervention.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT Objectives: To qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the interaction of Russian and Aussie currents in isometric contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle in the sensory, motor and pain tolerance spectra in healthy young women. Methods: The subjects were studied at a single point in time. A lower limb was selected at random to receive each current, and the electrodes were placed simultaneously on both legs, respecting 10 minutes between individual stimulation. Sensory, motor and pain-tolerance thresholds were assessed in quantitative (current density in mA/cm²) and qualitative (VAS) terms. Results: Subjects were 19 volunteers, aged 22.31 (1.29), with a BMI of 21.79 (1.78). The Aussie current reached the sensory threshold with significantly lower current density when compared with the Russian current for the same threshold. The results were significant in the overall group (treatment) for the two currents studied in terms of current density needed to reach the three thresholds. However, in the blocks (individually), there was significance only for the sensory threshold (p = 0.0126). Analysis of the perception of discomfort, assessed by VAS, was significant at the three time points for both currents, but in the comparison between these there was no significant difference. Conclusion: The Russian and Aussie currents are adequate in terms of the current density required to reach each threshold studied, and present differences between one another during interaction with the biological system, with the Aussie current necessitating less energy. However, in terms of perception of discomfort there are no significant differences between the two currents. Level of evidence III; Therapeutic studies - Investigating the results of treatment.

Résumé :
As the children were having their half time oranges, and the coach was busily organizing the team so that “everyone will be getting a turn,” I noticed one of the players at the back had long hair and an earring. I thought this was quite strange, since the fashion for nine year old boys is more of a prickle cut these days. I didn’t take too much notice as I was more interested in what the coach was saying. Then he mentioned that Natalie would be changing from the forwards to the backs, and it struck me. Yes it was a girl! So much for my stereotype that footy was a boy’s only game.

Résumé :
With the current skills shortage in the engineering profession and the need for more experienced engineers, it is important for Australian engineering companies to not only rely on importing skilled engineers from overseas to fulfil current day demands, but also to focus on developing young Australian engineers for the future. Aker Solutions Australia has implemented a training and development program for its employees by seconding them into the head office in Oslo, Norway for both technical and personal development. The program provides many positive outcomes for both the company and the employees including: knowledge transfer and alignment between the international offices, developing and improving the talent of Australian engineers, improving communications between the offices and providing the Oslo office with much needed resources. The program was initiated in 2006 and so far nine employees have been sent across the globe for training. In this time the employees have had the opportunity to work on new technological developments in gas processing, advanced concept development studies and large scale engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects. Working internationally has also provided Australian engineers with a chance to interact with a number of skilled people from diverse backgrounds, learn new languages and embrace different cultures. The program to date has had much success, with both clients and the Aker Solutions office in Norway requesting continuation of the Australian engineers’ services while one of the engineers—Jacqui Driver—won best paper at the 2007 APPEA conference for her work in Oslo on novel offshore LNG solutions.

Résumé :
Counter-mapping refers to the public dissemination by activist groups of maps that visually document particular harms and offenders or sites of justice and prior ownership. Drawing upon green criminology, this article analyses the consequences of using counter-mapping as an activist tool. It examines how media framing of the Aussie Farms map is constructed around particularly polarizing narratives. This interactive map demonstrates the location and proliferation of animal agriculture and animal exploitation industries within Australia. Media framing has generated heated debate among Australian farmers and activists alike by inciting deeply emotional responses to the issues. We explore these common media narratives and their consequences for activists and tools such as counter-maps.

« Evaluation of three automatic jetting races for control of the sheep body louse Bovicola ovis ». Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture 36, no 1 (1996) : 45. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/ea9960045.

Résumé :
Fine wool Merino sheep with short (4 mm) or long (30-80 mm) wool and moderate to heavy infestations of lice (Bovicola ovis) were treated with cyhalothrin at a concentration of 50 mg/L, applied using Alison, Aussie Dip and Boral Cyclone Superace automatic jetting races. Each machine was set up and operated by representatives of the manufacturer. With all 3 machines, arithmetic mean louse counts before and after treatment showed that in the sheep with short wool, lice numbers were reduced by > 98% at 8-12 weeks after treatment but were not eliminated. In the sheep with long wool, the maximum reductions in mean louse counts were 79, 68 and 98% for Alison, Aussie Dip and Boral Cyclone Superace machines at 7, 5 and 8 weeks after treatment, respectively. The Alison and Aussie Dip machines were each tested in alternative configurations which affected the disposition of the jetting fluid on the fleece. The distribution of live lice on the bodies of the shorn sheep after treatment using the Alison machine and 1 configuration of the Aussie Dip machine, indicated that more insecticide may have been delivered to the left side of the body than to the right. There were no significant differences between sides in sheep treated in the Boral Cyclone Superace machine. Our results suggest that the jetting races tested would control infestations of lice for at least 12 weeks in sheep treated within 2 weeks after shearing, but would be unlikely to eradicate lice from an infested flock. The machines differed markedly in their ability to control moderate to heavy infestations of lice in sheep with long (30-80 mm) wool, but in all cases there was evidence of a resurgence in lice numbers beyond 12 weeks after treatment.
