Abstract Nonhost angiosperm volatiles (NAV) and verbenone were tested for their ability to protect individual ponderosa pines, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex. Laws., from attack by western pine beetle (WPB), Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte, and red turpentine beetle (RTB), Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae). A combination of (−)-verbenone and eight NAVs [benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, guaiacol, nonanal, salicylaldehyde, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, and (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol] (NAVV) significantly reduced the density of WPB attacks and WPB successful attacks on attractant-baited trees. A significantly higher percentage of pitchouts (unsuccessful WPB attacks) occurred on NAVV-treated trees during two of three sample dates. In addition, significantly fewer RTB attacks were observed on NAVV-treated trees during all sampling dates. The application of NAVV to individual ponderosa pines significantly reduced tree mortality, with only 4 of 30 attractant-baited trees dying from bark beetle attack while 50% mortality (15/30) was observed in the untreated, baited control. To our knowledge, this is the first report establishing the effectiveness of NAVs and verbenone for protecting individual ponderosa pines from WPB attack.

Abstract The article presents the analysis of the threats to Polish Navy ships resulting from the development by the Baltic Sea countries of missile systems or turbojet missiles. The most popular varieties and types of missiles that could be used against Polish Navy vessels were described and classified taking into account mainly the potential of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Federation (BF FR), as well as an analysis of the latest global trends in the area of counteracting these missiles. The article presents the conclusions drawn from exemplary simulations of the attack of modern anti-ship missiles. The article also contains references to the ways of determining the probability of avoiding a rocket attack and the measure of the effectiveness of self-defence of attacked ships. The work contains conclusions regarding desirable traits from the systems of self-defence of ships on the modern battlefield with particular emphasis on the character of the Polish Navy. The article presents an analysis of the threats to ships of the Polish Navy, resulting from the development in the Baltic Sea countries, missile/turbojet anti-ship systems. Were described and classified most popular varieties and types of missiles applicable to fight Polish Navy ships and described latest global trends counteracted against these missiles. The article presents the conclusions drawn from exemplary simulations of the attack of modern anti-ship missiles. The article also contains references to the ways of determining the probability of avoiding a rocket attack and the measure of the effectiveness of self-defence of attacked ships. The work contains conclusions regarding desirable traits from the systems of self-defence of ships on the modern battlefield, with particular emphasis on the nature of the Polish Navy.

Abstract There are many explanations for the victory of the United States against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. Mistakes made by the Japanese certainly factored in the outcome and the United States also had certain advantages. However, an important if not sufficient explanation for the US victory is the pre-war preparation of the US Navy during peacetime. Designed by Ed Heinemann at Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo, California, from 1934 until 1938, the first Dauntless planes were delivered to the navy in 1940, well in advance of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the moment which is conventionally regarded as the US entry into the war. The pilots of the Dauntless, as I will show in this essay, were much the same; they too were the product of a peacetime Navy.

This article provides an interpretation of Josef Vilsmaier's two-part television feature film, Die Gustloff (2008), which depicts the sinking of that ship in January 1945. It argues that Vilsmaier, at the expense of historical fact, pins blame for the fateful decisions that led to the ship being vulnerable to attack on the Navy, while simultaneously seeking to exculpate and even glorify the Merchant Navy representatives on board. Die Gustloff seeks to distinguish between a “bad” captain and a “good” one, between hard-hearted military indifference and uncorrupted civilian decency in the face of the plight of German refugees. Generally, in its portrayal of the civilian as a realm untainted by Nazism, it seeks to resist trends in contemporary historiography that show such distinctions to be untenable. It is thus deeply revisionist in character, and, in many ways, represents the nadir of the “Germans as victims” trend in contemporary German culture.

Secretary of Navy Frank Knox declared a week after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor that fifth columnist activities were partly responsible for the success of Imperial Japanese forces. Who and what he meant when he used the phrase “fifth columnist activities” is subject to debate. Most assume he was referring to all Japanese Americans or Japanese nationals residing in Hawai’i. But this essay, based on Knox’s personal correspondence, supplemented with the Pearl Harbor Attack hearings’ published reports, Judge Advocate General records, and the 14th Naval District Intelligence Officer reports, finds that Knox was referring to the Japanese Consul-General Office and a small handful of Japanese American assistants who voluntarily carried out the task of keeping the U.S. Fleet and military installations under surveillance, thereby contributing to the success of the Imperial Japanese attack.

Abstract In the years before World War II, the US Navy developed and refined a particular culture of command. Outwardly, this culture emphasized decentralized authority; it relied on clear mission-based orders that provided direction and fostered the initiative of subordinates. An informal network of connections – personal relationships between officers – supported these formal structures. Intimate familiarity, developed through years of shared experiences and collaboration, was the medium through which the US Navy’s officer corps exercised command. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz leveraged these personal connections and shared experiences to transform the Pacific Fleet and turn it into a “vast and efficient organism” capable of learning, evolving, and overcoming myriad obstacles in pursuit of a singular vision: victory in the war against Imperial Japan. Nimitz’s approach was unique, but it was not unusual; it was an outgrowth of a leadership culture the Navy had actively fostered in the early years of the twentieth century. He used his relationships and familiarity with fellow officers to exercise command decisively and transform his command into a complex adaptive system that accelerated Allied victory in the Pacific in World War II.

This paper presents a new approach based on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), named PROMETHEE-SAPEVO-M1, through its implementation and feasibility related to the decision-making process regarding the evaluation of helicopters of attack of the Brazilian Navy. The proposed methodology aims to present an integration of ordinal evaluation into the cardinal procedure from the PROMETHEE method, enabling to perform qualitative and quantitative data and generate the criteria weights by pairwise evaluation, transparently. The modeling provides three models of preference analysis, as partial, complete, and outranking by intervals, along with an intra-criterion analysis by veto threshold, enabling the analysis of the performance of an alternative in a specific criterion. As a demonstration of the application, is carried out a case study by the PROMETHEE-SAPEVO-M1 web platform, addressing a strategic analysis of attack helicopters to be acquired by the Brazilian Navy, from the need to be evaluating multiple specifications with different levels of importance within the context problem. The modeling implementation in the case study is made in detail, first performing the alternatives in each criterion and then presenting the results by three different models of preference analysis, along with the intra-criterion analysis and a rank reversal procedure. Moreover, is realized a comparison analysis to the PROMETHEE method, exploring the main features of the PROMETHEE-SAPEVO-M1. Moreover, a section of discussion is presented, exposing some features and main points of the proposal. Therefore, this paper provides a valuable contribution to academia and society since it represents the application of an MCDA method in the state of the art, contributing to the decision-making resolution of the most diverse real problems.

Perceived threats to established social order can influence the willingness of those in authority to inflict punishments as well as the severity of those punishments. Our article explores that proposition in the case of summary punishment by flogging in the Royal Navy. In the Royal Navy commanders were given the power to inflict flogging for a host of offenses. Prevailing penal thinking emphasized general deterrence, whereby punishment of a few serious offenders would deter the body of seamen. Eighteenth-century reforms were intended to rationalize and normalize flogging and limit its severity. Qualitative evidence indicates that naval commanders saw the established order under attack after 1789 and, emphasizing moral offenses, imposed tighter discipline on their crews. The evidence we have assembled based on a randomly selected sample of ships between 1740 and 1820 shows that flogging aboard ships was moderate up until the “Age of Revolution” that began after 1789 but increased dramatically in its frequency and severity in the wake of the French Revolution. Multivariate analysis shows that greater penal severity is associated with several factors, including a period effect associated with the onset of the revolutionary age. Our findings are consistent with existing research that suggests that disorder influences the willingness to punish.

Navy Experimental Wing-in-Ground-Effect (WIG) craft namely as NEW1, is the first version of 2-seated WIG craft which has been designed and developed by Royal Thai Navy since 2017. This experimental research is a part of the NEW1 project which aims to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics and aspects of the flow passing through the WIG craft model when in ground effect. In the experiment, the WIG craft—NEW1 of 1:15 scale model is tested in a close circuit wind tunnel of 1 m × 1 m test section at Kasetsart University. The tests are conducted at the free stream velocity of 40 m/s or Reynolds number of 280,000, at angles of attack ranging from −9° to 21°, and at the wing to ground distances ranging from 5.0 C to 0.3 C. The measurement of 6-DoF of forces and moments and pressure distributions on the ground surface underneath the WIG craft model are made during the tests. The results show that the ground has significant effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of the WIG craft model when the wing to ground distance is less than its mean chord. It was found that when the model move from 5.0 C (out of ground effect) to 0.3 C, the lift coefficient increases up to 15.7%, the drag coefficient decreases up to 5.6%, and the lift to drag ratio increases 33.4%. The proximity of the model to the ground also affects the longitudinal stability of the model. The moment coefficient curves against angle of attack has negative slope for both in and out of ground effect indicating favorable longitudinal stability. However, it was found that the aerodynamic center move further aft toward the trailing edge when the model move closer to the ground.

A 20. századi magyar nyelvtudomány kiemelkedő személyiségét, a száz évvel ezelőtt született Benkő Lorándot szoros kapcsolatok fűzték Erdélyhez, az erdélyi magyar nyelvtudományhoz. Erdélyben született, a kolozsvári egyetemen tanult és az Erdélyi Tudományos Intézetben Szabó T. Attila irányításával kezdte el szakmai pályáját. Jelentős kutatási témái is jórészt erdélyiek voltak, és ezekben gazdag névtörténeti, szótörténeti tényanyaggal sikerült új megvilágításba helyeznie az erdélyi magyar népcsoportok eredetét. Az erdélyi magyar nyelvtudomány 2. világháború utáni elszigeteltségében egyetemi és akadémiai intézetek vezetőjeként és a Magyar Nyelv szerkesztőjeként Benkő Loránd fontos szerepet töltött be a kolozsvári nyelvészek munkáinak megjelentetésében. Elsősorban az ő támogatásának köszönhető, hogy 1990 után megjelenthettek az erdélyi nyelvészet nagy szintézisei: a 14 kötetes Erdélyi magyar szótörténeti tár és a 11 kötetes A romániai magyar nyelvjárások atlasza, valamint Szabó T. Attila helynévtörténeti adattárának gazdag anyaga.

During the Napoleonic Wars, in 1807, Britain attacked the small neutral state of Denmark without direct provocation, bombarded Copenhagen, seized its navy, and temporarily occupied part of its territory. Killing and displacing thousands of civilians, this was a highly traumatic experience for survivors and deeply controversial among contemporaries. This article examines how debates over the legitimacy of the attack were framed within predominant understandings of international law. International law at the turn of the 19th century was characterized by a dualism containing both the “Law of Nations” and “Law of Nature.”By utilizing divergent aspects of these discourses, the article shows how critics and defenders of the British military action were both able to frame their positions within existing frameworks of nascent international law.

The 21st century rivalry of the maritime powers took the form of substitute activities. These are military incidents, control, or seizure of a shipping entity, and activities that threaten shipping itself. This determines the state of maritime security of Poland, because the Baltic has become one of the areas of its conduct. The adopted form of importing energy carriers along with the forming an alliance with the US construction of the alliance with the USA creates the possibility of taking hostile actions against it. It is necessary to adapt the form of operation of the Polish Navy to these threats. Based on the analysis of international, and national legal regulations, strategic documents of maritime powers, and applied forms of maritime activity, the scope of changes in Polish maritime policy was determined. Modifications of the definition of terms maritime piracy and unlawful assault at sea in Polish legal regulations were considered necessary, they should also include activities of maritime terrorism, subversion and sabotage of offshore facilities and installations, as well as ships operating. The principle of linking defense tasks against the sea attack, and maintaining navigation continuity was proposed as an element determining the construction method of the Polish Navy and the scope of combat training. On this basis, its combat potential and scope of training were determined. In carrying out these basic tasks the Navy relies heavily on the readiness of the Indonesian Warship (KRI),including the readiness of underwater construction in KRI from corrosion attack on sea water. Nowadays, KRIuses Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection (SACP) from corrosion attack. Whereas, SACP system has someweakness, such as the lifetime protection is short. The aim of this paper is to the analysis of Impressed CurrentCathodic Protection (ICCP) design of the underwater structure of KRI using computative theory calculation andspecimen test. The results of ICCP design showed that the specimens I required 0.081 Ampere (A) forprotection current, specimen 2 required 0.010 A for protection current, specimens 3 required 0.00251 A. Withpotential protection between -800 mV up to -1100 mV, it described that the ICCP system is reasonable. Theresult of cathodic protection design towards an underwater structure of KRI (TR-40 Type) showed that 1.75 forAmpere (A) and 3.35 volt DC for voltage. In January-February 1939, a secret German expedition visited Dronning (or Queen) Maud Land, Antarctica, apparently with the intention inter alia of establishing a base there. Between 1943 and 1945 the British launched a secret wartime Antarctic operation, code-named Tabarin. Men from the Special Air Services Regiment (SAS), Britain's covert forces for operating behind the lines, appeared to be involved. In July and August 1945, after the German surrender, two U-boats arrived in Argentina. Had they been to Antarctica to land Nazi treasure or officials? In the southern summer of 1946–1947, the US Navy appeared to ‘invade’ Antarctica using a large force. The operation, code-named Highjump, was classified confidential. In 1958, three nuclear weapons were exploded in the region, as part of another classified US operation, code-named Argus. Given the initial lack of information about these various activities, it is not, perhaps, surprising that some people would connect them to produce a pattern in which governments would be accused of suppressing information about ‘what really happened’, and would use these pieces of information to construct a myth of a large German base existing in Antarctica and of allied efforts to destroy it. Using background knowledge of Antarctica and information concerning these activities that has been published since the early 1940s, it is demonstrated: that the two U-Boats could not have reached Antarctica; that there was no secret wartime German base in Dronning Maud Land; that SAS troops did not attack the alleged German base; that the SAS men in the region at the time had civilian jobs; that Operation Highjump was designed to train the US Navy for a possible war with the Soviet Union in the Arctic, and not to attack an alleged German base in Antarctica; and that Operation Argus took place over the ocean more than 2000 km north of Dronning Maud Land. Activities that were classified have subsequently been declassified and it is no longer difficult to separate fact from fancy, despite the fact that many find it attractive not to do so.

Abstract The military implications of Chinese control of Taiwan are understudied. Chinese control of Taiwan would likely improve the military balance in China's favor because of reunification's positive impact on Chinese submarine warfare and ocean surveillance capabilities. Basing Chinese submarine warfare assets on Taiwan would increase the vulnerability of U.S. surface forces to attack during a crisis, reduce the attrition rate of Chinese submarines during a war, and likely increase the number of submarine attack opportunities against U.S. surface combatants. Furthermore, placing hydrophone arrays off Taiwan's coasts for ocean surveillance would forge a critical missing link in China's kill chain for long-range attacks. This outcome could push the United States toward anti-satellite warfare that it might otherwise avoid, or it could force the U.S. Navy into narrower parts of the Philippine Sea. Finally, over the long term, if China were to develop a large fleet of truly quiet nuclear attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines, basing them on Taiwan would provide it with additional advantages. Specifically, such basing would enable China to both threaten Northeast Asian sea lanes of communication and strengthen its sea-based nuclear deterrent in ways that it is otherwise unlikely to be able to do. These findings have important implications for U.S. operational planning, policy, and grand strategy.

Abstract Since the 1941 Japanese attack against Pearl Harbor, numerous politicians, government analysts, and scholars have questioned how the Roosevelt administration could have been caught so unawares and incurred such heavy casualties at the onset of the Second World War. The postwar disclosure that President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his senior advisers had access to Japan’s diplomatic message system through a small joint Army–Navy cryptologic program, called MAGIC, further complicated the search for answers. Although many historians have cited the value of MAGIC linked to Pearl Harbor, few have looked at the overall intelligence value of Japan’s American targets for data collection beyond the first strike situation. Marshall’s ordered comprehensive review of the MAGIC cables in the days following the December 7 attack failed to explain the reason for a Japanese data dump of several hundred messages in length. What did military intelligence miss? What does Signals Intelligence show us about Japan’s post-Pearl Harbor plans for the United States? A deep read of the material contextualized by other intelligence reports reveals administrative optics likely blinded the American nation to Japan’s intended wartime game plan, setting up the potential for a disaster as great as the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

This article reviews about the new landing platform dock (LPD) that is an Advanced Enclosed Mast/Sensor system, a composite material structure that protects radar and communication antennas from weather, and helps reduce the ship’s vulnerability to detection by hostile radar. The San Antonio has hydraulically controlled gates at the stem, where the landing craft and assault vehicles leave the ship and return. The hydraulic system underwent several design changes in virtual prototype before it ever rocked in the water. Northrop Grumman is building three more San Antonio-class vessels, LPD 18 through 20. The Navy is planning to incorporate into the New York some of the steel that was recovered from the World Trade Center as a memorial to victims of the attack on September 11, 2001.

<p>This paper examined the impact of a network attack on a congested transmission session. The research is motivated by the fact that the previous research community has neglected to evaluate security issues related to network congestion environments, and has instead concentrated on resolving congestion issues only. At any point in time, attackers can take advantage of the congestion problem, exploit the attack surface, and inject attack vectors. In order to circumvent this issue, a machine learning algorithm is trained to correlate attack vectors from the attack surface in a network congestion signals environment with the value of decisions over time in order to maximise expected attack vectors from the attack surface. Experimental scenario that dwell on transmission rate overwhelming transmission session, resulting in a standing queue was used. The experiment produced a dataset in which a TCP transmission through bursting transmission were capture. The data was acquired using a variety of experimental scenarios. Nave Bayes, and K-Nearest Neighbours prediction analyses demonstrate strong prediction performance. As a result, this study re-establishes the association between attack surface and vectors with network attack prediction. </p>

For over two centuries (from the 17th Century to the early 19th Century), the Nguyen Lords in Cochinchina spent a lot of efforts to develop the navy forces to protect the sovereignty of sea & islands. The navy forces in Cochinchina rapidly grew in terms of troop strength, means and weapons. The Nguyen Lords were greatly concerned about this and frequently urged the recruiting of new troops to expand the fleet. Through trade, the Nguyen Lords established close relationship with Western merchants. With their help in weapon trading and manufacturing, Cochinchina was successfully equipped with fire arms for both infantry and navy forces. The Nguyen Lords were also interested in ship building and troops drilling. War ships in this time significant advanced in technical and combat abilities and capabilities. Therefore, Nguyen Lords’ Navy achieved a lot of notable victories, keeping up with the illustrious tradition of our nation's sea warfare. Typical of these feats included - To sink Japanese pirate ships in 1585; - To defeat the attack of the Dutch East India Company fleets (Vereenigde OostIndische Compagnie, VOC) in 1643; - To fight back the British troops, occupying Kunlun Islands in 1705; etc. In addition to powerful professional army, Nguyen Lords also built many military patrols, to protect and exploit marine resources in the East Sea. The military sea patrols named Hoang Sa, Bac Hai, Que Huong, Dai Mao Hai Ba, Que Huong Ham, etc. were born one by one. They came from fishermen who voluntarily joined military forces in the capacity of draftee (in the sense of military duty personnel); therefore, they were usually called by the name of “military personnel" or "military fishermen". In addition to collecting gold, silver, tools, etc.... of shipwreck to bring back to Nguyen Lords, they were also ready to fight every enemy who violated national sea sovereignty. They really were "war heroes" on the sea. The task of “the military fisherman troops” could be said to be extremely heavy, not just for economic life, but always associated with military tasks, such as going out on reconnaissance, spying, watching out and reporting on pirates, fighting pirates to protect the East sea. They face a lot of dangers to defend the sea-land sovereignty for the nation’s welfare. In this light, “the military fisherman troops” existed throughout the reign of the Nguyen Lords and the later Nguyen dynasty. Recent new findings have reflected a lot of interesting facts about the activities of “the military fisherman troops” as well as their living on the sea during the time of their mission. With all their achievements, “the then military fisherman troops” built up beautiful images shining with patriotism and the spirit of sacrificing their life for the country. The Nguyen Lords set up the Shipping Department in charge of registering, supervising and dealing with boats and ships from abroad to supervise and control the security at the sea.

A pozitív pszichológia, amely Seligman és Csíkszentmihályi (2000) szerint a jóllét megismerésére törekvő tudományos áramlat, az utóbbi két évtizedben világszerte nagy népszerűségre tett szert. A hazai pozitív pszichológia témájú kutatásokat elsőként, Oláh Attila szerkesztésében a Magyar Pszichológiai Szemle 2012-ben megjelent különszáma mutatta be. Jelen tanulmány kísérletet tesz arra, hogy áttekintse a pozitív pszichológiához kötődő, a fentiekben említett különszám megjelenése óta született legfontosabb eredményeket (pl. az egységesítő jóllétmodellek; a személyiség és a jóllét komplex összefüggései; a flow pszichogenetikai és neurobiológiai magyarázatai; egészséges pozitív érzelmek és optimális érzelmi egyensúly). Másik célkitűzésünk az irányzat jövőjének alakulását befolyásoló újabb kritikai észrevételek megfogalmazása, elsősorban a pozitív pszichológiai intervenciók hatékonyságához kapcsolódóan.

Az olvasó láthatja, hogy milyen tématerületeket érintett a munkássága során, kezdve a kesztölci Fehér-szirttel, amely vissza-visszatérő motívum a publikációk és diplomatervesek körében is. Attila kedvelt földrajzi régiója a Balaton környéke volt, doktori disszertációját a Tihanyi-félszigeten végzett kutatásaiból írta. A Tihanyi-félsziget mindig a kedvelt területek között maradt, így az általa épített iskola famulusai, így jómagam is ide terveztem az egyik mintaterületemet; de Grónás Viktor – aki egyike volt az első tanítványainak – szintén itteni felmérésekből készítette a doktori dolgozatát. Sok, az élete végéig a tudományos pályán „ragadt” szakemberhez hasonlóan Attila is gyakran, főleg pályája kezdetén egy-egy részletét vizsgálta a természetes környezetnek, majd az idő előrehaladtával, az egyre tágabb látókörnek, és az elmélyülő ismereteknek köszönhetően alkalmazott és gyakorlati témákkal és a nagy egészet átlátó szemlélettel vizsgálta a tájat, annak minden elemével és agroökológiai potenciáljával. A területi vetületen túl a kedvenc kutatási témája a kunhalmokhoz kapcsolódott, iskolateremtő munkáját is sokan innen ismerik hazánkból és külföldről is. Egész életében büszke volt rá, és áthatotta a mindennapjait, hogy a Stefanovits Iskola tagjának tekintette magát, és a professzor úr által képviselt irányzatot tanította és alkalmazta mind az oktatásban, mind a terepmunkában és a publikációs tevékenysége során is. Szintén meg kell említenünk, hogy kiváló fotográfus is volt, saját fényképei díszítik az általa készített cikkeket, könyvfejezeteket, ismeretterjesztő „tájfüzeteket”, és egyéb kiadványokat. Kiemelten fontosnak tartotta a tudományos ismeretterjesztést. Mindezek során, illetve mellett foglalkozott a tájváltozás vizsgálatával, talajvédelemmel, talajnedvességgel, talajtömörödéssel, talaj–növény kapcsolatokkal, kőzetekkel, ásványokkal, földrajzzal és a pálinkakészítés rejtelmeivel is. Munkássága kiemelkedő, érdekes, színes és gyakran hiánypótló. 2020 márciusa óta hagyott pótolhatatlan űrt a hazai tudományos életben és az egyetemi oktatásban. Publikációi segítségével azok számára is örökké emlékezetes lesz, aki már nem ismerték.

Abstract By the Second World War the US Navy had slated the pby Catalina to function as its long-range patrol seaplane and considered it for a bombing role. The first months of the war, however, revealed the pby to be too antiquated and slow to be a viable offensive weapon and thus minimized its utility. Relegated to conducting patrols and rescue operations, pby crews looked to the aircraft itself and experimented with technical and operational changes in reaction to fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific and the U-boat threat in the Atlantic. With the blessing of Navy’s command structure, crews made physical adjustments, added the latest technologies, incorporated supporting armaments, and designed new operational methods on an ad hoc basis for their respective circumstances and opponent. This experimentation and innovation resulted in the enhancement of the pby’s offensive utility as an attack weapon, and its transformation into the Black Cats and mad Cats.

The threat of terrorist attack posed to the Republic of Poland is of a potential character and possible targets for such attacks include also objects located in the area of the Baltic Sea. Terrorist activities may be carried out in order to destroy or render vessels such as passenger, cargo and the navy ships, hydraulic structures and port facilities inoperative, as well as to take control over them. A terrorist attack may also aim at causing an environmental disaster. Direct targets of terrorist attacks may be passengers or crew members, but attempts of cargo seizure may also be expected. Potential forms of terrorist attack possible to carry out on the sea include among other things: bomb attacks, hijacking, shooting incidents, mines, and underwater sabotage. Terrorist attacks may be undertaken by both separate terrorist groups and the ones that are linked with international terrorist organizations serving their ideological purposes. Activities performed by organized terrorist groups may mainly aim at money extortion. Perpetrators of terror attacks may also include special forces of foreign countries that conduct their activities in order to deteriorate the economy of the other country, disparage it or complicate its internal or international situation. To combat terrorist threats on the sea effectively it is necessary to undertake complementary and coordinated activities, and the tasks of preventing such threats and counteracting the effects of possible terror attacks are to be carried out by relevant forces and entities that act under particular government departments, as well as government administration bodies and special forces.

The dispute occurred early in the year 357/6 b.c.⋯π' Ἀγαθοκλ⋯ους ἄρχοντος, Dem. 47.44), when the speaker was a trierarch and supervisor of his symmory (τρɩηραρχ⋯ν κα⋯ ⋯πɩμελητ⋯ς ὢν τ⋯ς συμμορ⋯ας, Dem. 47.22), and he refers to ‘the law of Periandros, by which the symmories were organized’ (⋯ νóμος ⋯ το⋯ Περɩ⋯νδρου…καθ' ὃν αἰ συμμορ⋯αɩ συνετ⋯χθησαν, Dem. 47.21). There is no other specific reference to the law of Periandros. If 357/6 was the first year of its operation, it was probably passed in 358/7, but that is not known for certain. The identity of the man is likewise uncertain, though it has plausibly been suggested that he was Periandros son of Polyaratos (Dem. 40.6–7) and that he was the Periandros who proposed an alliance between Athens and Arkadia in 362/1 (IGii2112 = Tod 144). However, his identity is of no importance for the present article. Here I am concerned only to try to reconstruct what the law said about the symmories. Despite a great deal of modern discussion this question has still not been satisfactorily solved.The wordσυμμορ⋯αmeans ‘group’ or ‘division’ and does not necessarily have a technical or legal sense. But most of the Attic instances do have the special sense of a group of persons formed for the purpose of making payments of a compulsory tax or levy: either the property tax calledεἰσɸορ⋯, which was imposed at irregular intervals, or payments towards the maintenance of ships in the Athenian navy, which were required every year. A fragment of Philokhoros says that Athenians were dividedκατ⋯ συμμορ⋯αςfor the first time in 378/7, and it is generally agreed that this means that symmories were first formed in 378 for the payment ofeisphora. For the navy, however, there is no trace of symmories before the 350s, and everyone agrees that it was the law of Periandros which introduced the use of symmories for maintaining ships, which had previously been the sole responsibility of one trierarch or (more usually in the fourth century) a pair of syntrierarchs for each ship.

Countries with the International Marine time Boundary Line (IMBL) will always has security problems and continuous life threatens for those fishermen whose family’s main economical support is fishing. Even in the peninsular country like India has their boundary limit in the ocean, the people of these coastal regions has the main work of fishing, due to carelessness or without knowing their boundary limit of their country they crosses the borders. In such situation the lives of fishermen continued to be difficult. They may face bullets and attacks from opposite Navy, at the end of attack fishermen are being abducted and their boats are being captured. So our paper is designed to avoid such kind of accidents and to alert the fishermen about border area well before using latest technology of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile communication (GSM). And also this paper shows how this technology can be used for detecting natural hazards and obtaining meteorological information of the ocean for the safe navigation of fishermen.

Abstract The tiny island of Psara, located in the northeastern Aegean Sea, constitutes a lieu de mémoire for the Greek War of Independence. Psara occupied a prominent place in Philhellenic discourse due to the spectacular achievements of the island’s fireships and due to the bloody reprisals after an attack in 1824 by the Ottoman navy. This chapter utilizes the case of Psara as a laboratory for examining various questions related to military history (such as the nature of naval operations, their resources, techniques, and command) in an Ottoman and Mediterranean framework (particularly involving the legacy of the Russian–Ottoman War of 1768–1774). It addresses the broader issues and debates concerning the immediate causes of the outbreak of the Greek Revolution in 1821 as well as the perceptions of events (e.g., the looting of Muslim settlements on the Anatolian coast by Psara’s warships). The study draws on a neglected corpus of sources, including the voluminous “Archive of Psara” (Academy of Athens, 1974) and naval diaries of Greek war ships.

Abstract: British traders operating in the East in the early nineteenth century faced warfare, piracy, and shipwreck, along with the competing interests of local rulers and East India Company (EIC) officials. This article looks at episodes in the maritime careers of three brothers to show how the commercial environment affected trade. The brothers were born in Jamaica, illegitimate sons of a Scottish trader who served as a government official and his freed slave. One son became a ship’s captain in the Bombay Marine, the private navy of the EIC and an important surveyor of Eastern seas. Another son also joined the Bombay Marine but left under unknown circumstances and transferred to the private ‘country trade’ after adopting a new name. The third son became a ship’s captain in the country trade and died after an attack by local pirates in Bangka. The family circumstances that led to the brothers’ careers and lives of their children are summarized to illustrate the social mobility of descendants of West Indian slaves in the early nineteenth century.

Barczi Attila a tanárom, majd kollégám és doktori témavezetőm volt. A kutatási évek alatt számtalan alkalommal egyeztettünk, saját szakterületeinket illesztgettük egymáshoz, kerestük a közös pontokat, érveltünk és alakítottuk ki a közös nevezőnket. Abból az alapfelvetésből indult ki a PhD-kutatásom, hogy a táji és természeti mutatók nem vesznek részt a térségek és települések fejlettségét meghatározó és egymáshoz viszonyító rendszerben. Értékes természeti környezettel rendelkező térségeink nagy része hátrányos helyzettel bír a gazdasági és társadalmi állapotukat tekintve. Vizsgálataink arra irányultak, hogy ezen térségek miként élnek a természeti környezet adta lehetőségekkel a fejlesztéseik során? Milyen fejlesztéseket terveznek, és ezek miként függnek össze a természeti környezetük nyújtotta ökoszisztéma-szolgáltatásokkal? A kutatási eredmények között sikerült egy alkalmazható módszert leírni a természeti környezet szerepét erősítve a területi kohézió elemzéséhez, olyan adatok felhasználásával, melyek szabadon a rendelkezésünkre állnak.

A Baranya északi szélén fekvő Tormás határában Kiss Attila gyűjtött számottevőbb mennyiségben késő bronzkori leleteket 1970-ben, egy leletmentés során. Ekkor tűzhelyek maradványait is megfigyelte a falutól északkeletre, a Szágyi-patak mellett elhelyezkedő „Kenderföldek” nevű határrészen. Több mint negyven évvel később, 2022 folyamán ismét ezen a lelőhelyen dolgoztak múzeumunk régészei, amikor ugyanannak az őskori településnek egy másik szeletét tártuk föl. A munkálatok során föltárt nyolc régészeti jelenségből öt a késő bronzkorra tehető. Ezekből nagyobb mennyiségű kerámia, kevés állatcsont és néhány szép fémtárgy – három bronztű – is előkerült. A jelenségek nagy része gödrökből áll, míg a szelvény szélére eső, ezért csak részlegesen feltárt 5. számú stratigráfiai egység akár épület is lehetett. A leletanyag elemzése nyomán a teleprészletet a késő bronzkori Urnamezős kultúra idejére sorolhatjuk, mely az i.e. 13–9. század során virágzott a Dunántúlon.
