Résumé :
Recent research on visual short-term memory (VSTM) has revealed the existence of a bilateral field advantage (BFA – i.e., better memory when the items are distributed in the two visual fields than if they are presented in the same hemifield) for spatial location and bar orientation, but not for color ( Delvenne, 2005 ; Umemoto, Drew, Ester, & Awh, 2010 ). Here, we investigated whether a BFA in VSTM is constrained by attentional selective processes. It has indeed been previously suggested that the BFA may be a general feature of selective attention ( Alvarez & Cavanagh, 2005 ; Delvenne, 2005 ). Therefore, the present study examined whether VSTM for color benefits from bilateral presentation if attentional selective processes are particularly engaged. Participants completed a color change detection task whereby target stimuli were presented either across both hemifields or within one single hemifield. In order to engage attentional selective processes, some trials contained irrelevant stimuli that needed to be ignored. Targets were selected based on spatial locations (Experiment 1) or on a salient feature (Experiment 2). In both cases, the results revealed a BFA only when irrelevant stimuli were presented among the targets. Overall, the findings strongly suggest that attentional selective processes at encoding can constrain whether a BFA is observed in VSTM.

Résumé :
Abstract Background Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a readily available tool to assess body composition in a clinical setting. BIA has received little attention in orthopaedics and namely joint arthroplasty. This study aims to quantify changes in body composition in the immediate peri-operative period following total joint arthroplasty. Methods Adults scheduled for elective total joint arthroplasty were recruited to participate. Patients underwent BIA scans in the immediate peri-operative period: pre-operative on their day of surgery, post-operative day 0, and post-operative day 1. Results 67 patients were enrolled to undergo BIA scans. Mean age was 62.64 ± 10.28 years old, and 49.2% were females. The all-supine cohort exhibited a 0.36 ± 0.61 kg increase in dry lean mass (p < 0.001) and 1.30 ± 2.14 kg increase in lean body mass on postoperative day 0 (p < 0.001). Patients received to 1.16 ± 0.58 kg of fluid mass, on average. Conclusion BIA is a rapid, portable tool that allows for body composition analysis of an inpatient surgical population. This study demonstrated that BIA can detect net fluid changes and may approximate implant mass following total joint arthroplasty. This may aid surgeons in interpreting post-operative body composition changes.

Résumé :
Objectives. The importance of preventive medicine in an aging society is increasing. Locomotive syndrome (LS) is attracting increasing attention. Recently, advances in bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices have made it possible to automatically measure waist circumference (WC). Nevertheless, there have been no reports evaluating the agreement or interchangeability between WC measured manually and using BIA. Therefore, we aimed to perform these analyses in the context of health checkups and investigated the associations with LS risk. Methods. We enrolled 597 participants who underwent the following: two-step tests and stand-up tests; evaluations using a 25-question geriatric locomotive function scale for the LS risk test; anthropometric marker measurements including WC measured by manual and BIA; and measurements of total cholesterol and triglycerides. We used Bland–Altman analysis to calculate agreement and interchangeability of the WC measurement using BIA and the manual method. A statistical comparative study was then conducted between normal and LS risk groups. Subsequently, significant risk factors for LS were investigated using multivariate analysis. Results. The Bland–Altman analysis showed that bias (BIA-manual) was negative overall (−2.024), for males (−1.418) and for females (−2.460), suggesting underestimation using BIA compared with manual measurements. Interchangeability was found between WC measurement by BIA and by manual methods, because the percentage error was less than 15% overall (12.3%), for males (10.2%) and for females (13.8%). Univariate analysis showed that WC was significantly higher in the LS risk group than in the normal group. Multivariate analysis adjusted for confounding factors showed that increase in WC significantly correlated with LS risk. Conclusions. BIA and manual methods for measuring WC are interchangeable. The increase in WC measured by BIA was significantly associated with LS risk. It is important to continue focusing on increased WC and early detection of LS risk.

Résumé :
Breast implant–associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare, breast implant–associated T-cell lymphoma in which CD30 is expressed and anaplastic lymphoma kinase ( ALK) expression is absent. However, despite the low risk of developing the disease, more information on BIA-ALCL is necessary, because the number of women with breast implants has been increasing worldwide; Brazil is one of the main markets for this type of implant. The objectives of this review are to clarify the issue of BIA-ALCL occurrence after risk-reducing mastectomy, to show the importance of this disease, and to raise awareness among the medical community about this rare pathologic condition. In 2016, BIA-ALCL was included by WHO in the new classification of lymphomas, and this demonstrates the attention that medical entities should give to this disease. Thus, awareness about BIA-ALCL must be broadened among the medical societies and regulatory authorities, both to foster better approaches to this disease, which should be evaluated in a multidisciplinary manner, and to provide better knowledge among health care professionals and the target population about the use of implants.

Résumé :
Background: Breast-implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a rare malignancy linked to texturized breast implants. Although many researchers focus on its etiopathogenesis, this topic is affected by a lack of evidence. Materials and Methods: A literature review about BIA-ALCL was made. Results and conclusions: Although the incidence is reported between 1:355–1:30.000, there is great attention to BIA-ALCL. The incidence is uncertain due to many reasons. It may well be lower, due to inclusion in multiple databases as pointed out by the FDA and undiagnosed cases. The role of chronic inflammation, bacterial contamination, and mechanical forces was discussed. Clarification is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying the progression of alterations and mutations for BIA-ALCL; new molecular analysis and pathogenetic models should be investigated.

Résumé :
Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a CD30-positive, anaplastic lymphoma kinase-negative T-cell lymphoma. Where implant history is known, all confirmed cases to date have occurred in patients with exposure to textured implants. There is a spectrum of disease presentation, with the most common occurring as a seroma with an indolent course. A less common presentation occurs as locally advanced or, rarely, as metastatic disease. Here we review the immunological characteristics of BIA-ALCL and potential triggers leading to its development. BIA-ALCL occurs in an inflammatory microenvironment with significant lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltration and a prominent Th1/Th17 phenotype in advanced disease. Genetic lesions affecting the JAK/STAT signaling pathway are commonly present. Proposed triggers for the development of malignancy include mechanical friction, silicone implant shell particulates, silicone leachables, and bacteria. Of these, the bacterial hypothesis has received significant attention, supported by a plausible biologic model. In this model, bacteria form an adherent biofilm in the favorable environment of the textured implant surface, producing a bacterial load that elicits a chronic inflammatory response. Bacterial antigens, primarily of Gram-negative origin, may trigger innate immunity and induce T-cell proliferation with subsequent malignant transformation in genetically susceptible individuals. Although much remains to be elucidated regarding the multifactorial origins of BIA-ALCL, future research should focus on prevention and treatment strategies, recognizing susceptible populations, and whether decreasing the risk of BIA-ALCL is possible.

Résumé :
Today, to integrate sustainable development goals into business, an overall integrated sustainable performance management system — to implement and measure these global goals — is needed. In a short timeframe, the benefit impact assessment (BIA) — elaborated by B Lab, utilized by benefit corporations (a new and emerging hybrid type of prosocial business) and adopted by the United Nations — became the most comprehensive indicator to evaluate company practices against SDGs. Italy was the first sovereign country to insert the benefit corporation legislation after the US and analyze the effectiveness of the BIA. This prompted us to address our attention to the integration of benefit-driven indicators, adopted by Italian B Corps into their performance management systems, and to analyze if these indicators are used by managers to support internal decision-making. To achieve this goal, cross-sector semi-structured interviews were conducted in seven Italian certified benefit corporations. Relevant to both researchers and practitioners, our review provides a useful snapshot of how the BIA is developing as an assessment and how value-based organizations are moving toward an integrated sustainable performance management system.

Résumé :
Body composition is acknowledged as a determinant of athletic health and performance. Its assessment is crucial in evaluating the efficiency of a diet or aspects related to the nutritional status of the athlete. Despite the methods traditionally used to assess body composition, bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) and bioelectric impedance vector analysis (BIVA) have recently gained attention in sports, as well as in a research context. Only until recently have specific regression equations and reference tolerance ellipses for athletes become available, while specific recommendations for measurement procedures still remain scarce. Therefore, the present narrative review summarizes the current literature regarding body composition analysis, with a special focus on BIA and BIVA. The use of specific technologies and sampling frequencies is described, and recommendations for the assessment of body composition in athletes are provided. Additionally, the estimation of body composition parameters (i.e., quantitative analysis) and the interpretation of the raw bioelectrical data (i.e., qualitative analysis) are examined, highlighting the innovations now available in athletes. Lastly, it should be noted that, up until 2020, the use of BIA and BIVA in athletes failed to provide accurate results due to unspecific equations and references; however, new perspectives are now unfolding for researchers and practitioners. In light of this, BIA and especially BIVA can be utilized to monitor the nutritional status and the seasonal changes in body composition in athletes, as well as provide accurate within- and between-athlete comparisons.

Résumé :
Abstract Many low- and middle-income countries are seeking to reform their health financing systems to move towards universal coverage. This typically means that financing is based on people’s ability to pay while, for service use, benefits are based on the need for health care. Financing incidence analysis (FIA) and benefit incidence analysis (BIA) are two popular tools used to assess equity in health systems financing and service use. FIA studies examine who pays for the health sector and how these contributions are distributed according to socioeconomic status (SES). BIA determines who benefits from health care spending, with recipients ranked by their relative SES. In this article, we identify 10 resources to assist researchers and policy makers seeking to undertake or interpret findings from financing and benefit incidence analyses in the health sector. The article pays particular attention to the data requirements, computations, methodological challenges and country level experiences with these types of analyses.

Résumé :
Objective: Attentional problems are amongst the most commonly reported complaints following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), including difficulties orienting and disengaging attention, sustaining it over time, and dividing attentional resources across multiple simultaneous demands. The objective of this study was to track, using a single novel electrophysiological task, various components associated with the deployment of visuospatial selective attention. Methods: A paradigm was designed to evoke earlier visual evoked potentials (VEPs), as well as attention-related and visuocognitive ERPs. Data from 36 individuals with mTBI (19 subacute, 17 chronic) and 22 uninjured controls are presented. Postconcussion symptoms (PCS), anxiety (BAI), depression (BDI-II) and visual attention (TEA Map Search, DKEFS Trail Making Test) were also assessed. Results: Earlier VEPs (P1, N1), as well as processes related to visuospatial orientation (N2pc) and encoding in visual short-term memory (SPCN), appear comparable in mTBI and control participants. However, there appears to be a disruption in the spatiotemporal dynamics of attention (N2pc-Ptc, P2) in subacute mTBI, which recovers within six months. This is also reflected in altered neuropsychological performance (information processing speed, attentional shifting). Furthermore, orientation of attention (P3a) and working memory processes (P3b) are also affected and remain as such in the chronic post-mTBI period, in co-occurrence with persisting postconcussion symptomatology. Conclusions: This study adds original findings indicating that such a sensitive and rigorous ERP task implemented at diagnostic and follow-up levels could allow for the identification of subtle but complex brain activation and connectivity deficits that can occur following mTBI.

Résumé :
Women with a previous history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases in the future. The aim of the study was to evaluate ghrelin concentrations in serum and urine in the GDM group in the early post-partum period, with reference to laboratory results, body composition, and hydration status. The study subjects were divided into two groups, that is, 28 healthy controls and 26 patients with diagnosed GDM. The maternal body composition and hydration status were evaluated by the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method. The concentrations of ghrelin in the maternal serum and urine were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The laboratory and BIA results of the mothers with GDM were different from those without GDM. Urine ghrelin positively correlated with serum ghrelin and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) levels in healthy mothers. There were direct correlations between urine ghrelin and HDL as well as triglycerides levels in the GDM group. Neither the lean tissue index nor body cell mass index were related to the serum ghrelin concentrations in this group. Only the urine ghrelin of healthy mothers correlated with the fat tissue index. Our results draw attention to urine as an easily available and appropriable biological material for further studies.

Résumé :
Objective: Although the incidence of colorectal adenomas increases with obesity, the role of various body compositions is still unknown. We aimed to determine which body composition best reflects the risk of colorectal adenomas. Methods: Patients aged 50–75 years who underwent colonoscopy and a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for a health check-up from 2017 to 2019 were retrospectively enrolled. The skeletal muscle index (SMI), fat mass index (FMI), and visceral fat index (VFI) were obtained using BIA. The muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) and the skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio (SVR) were calculated. Results: Among 15,102 patients, 6605 (43.7%) had adenomas. SMI, FMI, MFR, VFI, and SVR were all associated with the risk of adenomas and high-risk adenomas in the age- and sex-adjusted model. When further adjusted for metabolic and lifestyle factors, VFI was the only factor significantly associated with the risk of colorectal adenomas and high-risk adenomas (adenomas: odds ratio (OR) 1.40, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.22–1.61; high-risk adenomas: OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.16–1.87, for the highest quartile). Conclusion: Among the various body indices, VFI was the most important index associated with the development of colorectal adenoma. More attention should be paid to visceral fat when predicting the risk of colorectal adenomas.

Résumé :
The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is a developing technology attracting attention from the industry and the academia. Hundreds of millions of vehicles are projected to be connected within the IoV environments by 2035. Each vehicle in the environment is expected to generate massive amounts of data. Currently, surveys on leveraging deep learning (DL) in the IoV within the context of big data analytics (BDA) are scarce. In this paper, we present a survey and explore the theoretical perspective of the role of DL in the IoV within the context of BDA. The study has unveiled substantial research opportunities that cut across DL, IoV, and BDA. Exploring DL in the IoV within BDA is an infant research area requiring active attention from researchers to fully understand the emerging concept. The survey proposes a model of IoV environment integrated into the cloud equipped with a high-performance computing server, DL architecture, and Apache Spark for data analytics. The current developments, challenges, and opportunities for future research are presented. This study can guide expert and novice researchers on further development of the application of DL in the IoV within the context of BDA.

Résumé :
Childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated both with suicidal behavior and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Yet not much is known about the relationship of CM and suicidal behavior in adults diagnosed with ADHD. This study aims to further investigate this potential risk. Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-V1.1), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), A self-rating Questionnaire for Suicide Ideation (SIQ) and Suicidal Behavior Scale (SBS) were employed to 104 cases with adult ADHD, whose comorbid psychiatric disorders were examined according to the DSM-5 criteria. It was found that, while age and education level are significantly lower; the fraction of those who are single, as well as the DES, BDI, BAI, SIQ and SBS scores are significantly higher in the ADHD cases with CM history than those with no history of CM. In addition, SIQ and emotional abuse scores were found as significant predictors of SBS scores in adults with ADHD. These results suggest that investigating CM, as well as suicidal behaviors in adults diagnosed with ADHD can be useful in creating a treatment plan to prevent suicide attempts and suicide.

Résumé :
Resting energy expenditure (REE; i.e., the calorie amount required for 24 h during a non-active period) is an important parameter in nutritional rehabilitation of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). This study determined whether age, body mass index, AN duration/subtype/specific symptoms/clinical severity, cognitive function alterations, and psychiatric comorbidities influenced REE or the difference between the calculated and estimated REE. Patients with AN who were followed at a daycare treatment facility between May 2017 and January 2020 (n = 138) underwent a complete assessment that included the MINI, Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, d2 test of attention, body fat composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and REE measurement by indirect calorimetry (REEIC). AN subtype (N = 66 for restrictive subtype and N = 69 for non-restrictive subtype; p = 0.005), free-fat mass (<0.001), and fat mass (<0.001) were associated with REEIC. Age (p < 0.001), height (p = 0.003), and AN duration (N = 46 for <3 years and N = 82 for ≥3 years; p = 0.012) were associated with the difference between estimated REE (using the Schebendach equation) and measured REEIC. Therefore, the Schebendach equation was adjusted differently in the two patients’ subgroups (AN duration ≤ or >3 years). Overall, REE was higher in patients with restrictive than non-restrictive AN. In the absence of BIA measures, REE-estimating equations should take into account AN duration.

The paper focuses on less known British trials dealing with desertion, namely, war crimes trials conducted by the British in Singapore. It examines how these trials dealt with contested interpretations of desertion. Drawing on lessons from these trials, the paper then highlights gaps in today’s international humanitarian law framework, specifically, the need to take into account the realities of desertion, its different permutations, and the difficulties of differentiating between prisoners of war [POWs] and deserters.

Résumé :
In recent years, we have witnessed numerous indoor fires caused by the flammable properties of cotton. Flame-retardant cotton deserves our attention. A novel boric acid and diethylenetriaminepenta (methylene-phosphonic acid) (DTPMPA) ammonium salt-based chelating coordination flame retardant (BDA) was successfully prepared for cotton fabrics, and a related retardant mechanism with ion transfer was investigated. BDA can form a stable chemical and coordination bond on the surface of cotton fibers by a simple three-curing finishing process. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of BDA-90 increased to 36.1%, and the LOI value of cotton fabric became 30.3% after 50 laundering cycles (LCs) and exhibited excellent durable flame retardancy. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods were used to observe the bonding mode and morphology of BDA on cotton fibers. A synergistic flame-retardant mechanism of condensed and gas phases was concluded from thermogravimetry (TG), cone calorimeter tests, and TG-FTIR. The test results of whiteness and tensile strength showed that the physical properties of BDA-treated cotton fabric were well maintained.

Résumé :
Early detection of primary bladder cancer (BCa) is vital, because stage and grade have been generally accepted not only as categorical but also as prognostic factors in patients with BCa. The widely accepted screening methods for BCa, cystoscopy and urine cytology, have unsatisfactory diagnostic accuracy, with high rates of false negatives, especially for flat-type BCa with cystoscopy and for low-risk disease with urine cytology. Currently, liquid biopsy has attracted much attention as being compensatory for that limited diagnostic power. In this review, we survey the literature on liquid biopsy for the detection of BCa, focusing on circulating tumor cells (CTCs), urinary cell-free DNA (ucfDNA), and urinary microRNA (umiRNA). In diagnostic terms, CTCs and umiRNA are determined by quantitative analysis, and ucfDNA relies on finding genetic and epigenetic changes. The ideal biomarkers should be highly sensitive in detecting BCa. Currently, CTCs produce an unfavorable result; however, umiRNA and ucfDNA, especially when analyzed using a panel of genes, produce promising results. However, given the small cohort size in most studies, no conclusions can yet be drawn about liquid biopsy’s immediate application to clinical practice. Further large studies to validate the diagnostic value of liquid biopsy for clinical use are mandatory.

Résumé :
The amount of energy that buildings consume is currently attracting significant interest throughout the world, and considerable attention is being devoted to the development of green buildings to reduce energy consumption; however, the current process being used to conduct building energy analysis has a significant shortcoming in that it cannot directly use building information modelling (BIM)-based representational data that includes a curved wall. Currently, the curved wall must be converted into segmented straight walls (SSWs) in the building model in order for the building energy analysis (BEA) program to be able to recognize and use the data. In this paper, we have proposed a segmentation process for curved walls in industry foundation classes (IFC)-based BIM for BEA. The proposed process consists of three sub-processes: 1) extracting data from the IFC model; 2) dividing the curved wall into several segmented straight walls; and 3) generating an INP file as a building description for DOE-2.2-based BEA. The proposed process will enable the engineers who are responsible for BEA to use a BIM-based model directly in the BEA program without having to do additional work. The proposed process can help ensure that the BEA results are accurate and reliable.

Résumé :
The big data analytics (BDA) has dragged tremendous attention in healthcare organizations. Healthcare organizations are investing substantial money and time in big data analytics and want to adopt it to get potential benefits. Thus, this study proposes a BDA adoption model in healthcare organizations to explore the critical factors that can influence its adoption process. The study extends the technology acceptance model (TAM) with the self-efficacy as an external factor and also includes gender and resistance to change (RTC) as moderators to strengthen the research model. The proposed research model has been tested on 283 valid responses which were collected through a structured survey, by applying structural equation modeling. Our results portray that self-efficacy is a strong predictor of intention to use BDA along with other TAM factors. Moreover, it is confirmed by the results that RTC dampens the positive relationship between intention to use and actual use of BDA in healthcare organizations. The outcomes revealed that male employees as compared to female employees are dominant towards the positive intention to use BDA. Furthermore, females create more RTC than males while adopting BDA in healthcare organizations. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and future research directions also underlined in this study.

Résumé :
With the development of big data and the increasing abundance of content derived from it, applications linking big data to supply chain management are gaining increasing attention. Some researchers however believe technology of big data is not quite grown up enough. This paper therefore investigates and summarizes the recent progress in terms of big data analysis (BDA) and supply chain management (SCM). To be specific, it concludes with the state-of-art exploration of the application of BDA in SCM from the fields of financial institutions, the retail industry and the logistics industry. According to the analysis, it is found that the state-of-art BDA approaches and scenarios can meet the needs and requirements of SCA, which can effectively improve the deficiencies, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. This paper will provide recommendations and examples for users who are still skeptical about big data and shed light on guiding further exploration of BDA in SCM.

IntroductionBioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can be used to estimate Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI). However, the use of directly measured BIA variables, such as phase angle (PhA), has gained attention. The frequency of low FFMI and PhA and its associations with exercise capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) have been scarcely studied.ObjectivesTo investigate the frequency of low FFMI and PhA and their associations with exercise capacity and HRQL in patients with IPF.MethodsPatients underwent assessment of lung function, body composition, exercise capacity by the 6 min walk distance (6MWD), and HRQL by the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36-item Questionnaire (SF-36). Patients were classified as presenting normal or low PhA or FFMI, accordingly to the 10th percentiles of age-sex-body mass index (BMI)-specific reference values.Results98 patients (84 males, age: 68±8 years, forced vital capacity: 64%±18%predicted) were included. 24 patients presented low PhA. They were characterised by worse lung function, exercise capacity and HRQL compared with patients with normal PhA. 10 patients presented low FFMI, but despite differences in body composition, no differences were found between these patients and patients with normal FFMI. In a single regression analysis, age, lung function and body composition variables (except FFMI) were related to 6MWD and SF-36 Physical Summary Score (R²=0.06–0.36, p<0.05). None of the variables were related to SF-36 Mental Summary Score.ConclusionOne-fourth of the patients with IPF with normal to obese BMI present abnormally low PhA. Patients classified as low PhA presented worse lung function, exercise capacity and HRQL.

Résumé :
Speeches and persuasion dominate Plato’s Crito. This paper, paying particular attention to the final passage in the dialogue, shows that the focus on speeches, persuasion and allusions to many other elements of rhetoric is an integral part of Plato’s severe criticism of democracy, one of the main points of the Crito. Speeches allow members of a democracy – represented in our dialogue by Crito – firstly to break the law for self-interested reasons while considering themselves still to be law-abiding citizens, and secondly to feel that they are in a tolerant society preferring logos/persuasive speech above bia/compulsion. Socrates counters Crito’s speeches with speeches of his own, not only to defeat him at his own game, but also to make him aware how dangerous the game is. Real knowledge is preferable to speeches, but a democracy without speeches and rhetoric is doomed.

Résumé :
Boundary element inverse analysis (BEIA) by using genetic algorithm (GA) to identify corrosion location has been introduced by many researchers. However, the BEIA using GA is more complex to be programmed since it involved with genetic operators such as crossover and mutation. Recently, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) already takes researcher’s attention because of its simplicity to be programmed and comparable accuracy. This study is conducted to develop BEIA by combining Boundary Element Method (BEM) and PSO to identify the corrosion location of the steels in concrete structure from some potential data on concrete surface. The potential in the concrete domain was modeled by Laplace’s equation. The anode and cathode are represented by each polarization curve. The inverse problem is carried out by means of minimizing a cost function i.e. a difference between the calculated and measured potentials on the concrete surface. The calculated values of potential are obtained by solving the Laplace’s equation using boundary element method (BEM). Numerical simulation results show that the developed BEIA has proven that it can identify the corrosion location on the surface of reinforcement steel precisely.

Résumé :
Methods for identifying relevant policy impacts for valuation in benefit-cost analyses (BCAs) have received relatively little attention in academic research, applied policy analyses, and guidance documents. In this paper, we develop a systematic, transparent, and replicable process that draws upon information contained in records of Congressional hearings to identify relevant policy impacts for valuation in a BCA. Our approach involves classifying – and subsequently analyzing – statements from witnesses testifying in Congressional hearings on the topic of the BCA. By using Congressional hearings as the basis for our approach, we are identifying potential policy impacts from information provided during the very process the BCA is intended to inform. However, because this approach is quite resource-intensive and would be somewhat burdensome for agencies to implement, it may be best applied in the academic realm, with identified impacts resulting from such applications then made available to agency personnel for potential inclusion in BCAs. Using the case of the Glen Canyon Dam, we demonstrate the approach and its resulting improvements in the quality and transparency of the BCA it was intended to inform.

Abstract Studies on the effect of bilingualism on executive functioning have sometimes failed to find significant differences between performance of monolingual and bilingual young adults. This paper examines the interpretation of these null findings and considers the role of three factors: definition of bilingualism, appropriateness of statistical procedures and interpretations, and the range of data considered. The conclusion is that a correct interpretation of this important issue will require careful consideration of all the data and scrupulous attention to design details.

Résumé :
Background. Hypertension is an important public health concern that is claiming millions of lives worldwide. In sub-Saharan African countries, where some of the highest prevalence rates are being recorded, sufficient attention has not been given to its control. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the association and predictive potential of different anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measures for hypertension. Methods. A total of 812 individuals (204 men and 608 women) were enrolled, and their blood pressure measurement was determined. Direct anthropometric measures (weight, height, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference) and derived anthropometric measures (body mass index, conicity index, abdominal volume index (AVI), and body adiposity index) were determined. BIA indices investigated included visceral fat level (VF), percentage body fat (%BF), resting metabolic rate (RMR), and skeletal muscle mass. Results. A prevalence of 31.28% was observed for hypertension in the total study population, with males having a slightly higher prevalence than females. Except for the skeletal muscle mass, all the other indices measured showed an increasing trend from normotension to prehypertension and hypertension. Age and visceral fat level showed the highest correlation with systolic blood pressure for both genders. Receiver operator characteristic analysis showed that age was the best predictor of hypertension in both genders, whereas, in predicting prehypertension, RMR was the best predictor in males, and WC was the best predictor in females. VF, WC, and AVI were other good predictors of hypertension in this study population. However, BMI and % BF had a low predictive value for hypertension. Conclusion. The result of this study shows that within this study population in addition to age, measures of central obesity rather than general obesity are the likely drivers of the hypertension epidemic; thus, measures aimed at controlling central obesity may offer some therapeutic and preventive advantage.

Résumé :
Big Data Adoption (BDA) has already gained tremendous attention from executives in various fields. However, it is still not well explored in the education sector, where a large amount of academic data is being produced. Therefore, integrating Technology Organization Environment (TOE) and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), this study aims to develop a theoretical model to identify the factors that influence BDA in the higher education sector. To do so, significant technology-, organization-, and environment-related factors have been extracted from previous BDA studies. Meanwhile, the moderating effects of the university size and the university age are added into the developed model. A sample of 195 data was collected from the managerial side of virtual university (VU) campuses in Pakistan using an online survey questionnaire. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the research model and developed hypotheses. The results showed that relative advantage, complexity, compatibility, top management support, financial resources, human expertise and skills, competitive pressure, security and privacy, and government policies are significant determinants of BDA. However, the results did not support the influence of IT infrastructure on BDA. Based on the findings, this study provides guidelines for the successful adoption of big data in higher education sector. This study can serve as a piece of help to the ministry of education, administrators, and big data service providers for the smooth adoption of big data.

Résumé :
A bioavailable nutrient has the potential to be utilized when ingested. Ideally, the nutrient requirements of animals and the nutrient concentrations of feedingstuffs should be expressed in terms of bioavailable units. Bioavailability is an abstract concept which cannot be measured but it can be estimated. The purpose of this review is to describe, evaluate and compare procedures used to estimate the concentrations of bioavailable amino acids (BAA) in feedingstuffs for pigs and poultry. Accurate and precise measurement of total amino acid (AA) concentrations is of fundamental importance to many assays. Problems are encountered both in making the AA available for measurement (hydrolysis) and in the measurement procedures. There is need for standardization of methodology but until this is achieved caution must be exercised when comparing data obtained by different techniques or even from different laboratories. In vitro assays for BAA are relatively fast and can be made without access to animals. Enzymic digestion has the potential to be a good estimator of BAA but is constrained by a lack of information about the bioavailabilities of the peptides which are liberated. Chemical assays and dye binding produce data which sometimes, but not always, correlate with biological estimates of BAA. The future of such assays seems to be in quality control where comparisons are made among samples within ingredients. Among the indirect biological assays, those based on microbial growth have received the most attention. The major weakness of such assays resides in the difference between animal and microbe in the ability to utilize peptides. Plasma free amino acids are not satisfactory estimators of BAA although they can help to identify limiting AA in feedingstuffs. Nitrogen digestion lacks the sensitivity to be a predictor of BAA. Growth assays are thought by many to be the ultimate measure of bioavailability but in fact they measure utility which is not the same. Nevertheless, growth assays can provide valuable estimates of BAA providing that their limitations are understood. The assays are expensive and slow and the results can be affected by many variables including changes in nutrient concentrations when a test material is added to an assay diet. Much of the review is devoted to balance experiments which require great care and attention to detail if reliable, reproducible data are to be obtained. Procedures have been refined during many years of use and with the advent of new equipment and techniques. Concern is currently focussed on corrections for metabolic and endogenous losses and on the effects of the microflora of the alimentary tract. Recent developments have increased assay efficiency, particularly with poultry. The balance experiment provides BAA estimates, that can be used effectively in diet formulation, at a much faster rate than growth assays. The final section of the review makes comparisons among various methods of estimating BAA. Interspecies comparisons are useful because they provide guidance when attempting to apply data derived with one species to formulate diets for another. The search for a single assay which provides data applicable to several species is a worthwhile objective. In the meantime, there are many assays used to estimate BAA which have specific applications and limitations. Key words: Pigs, poultry, amino acids, assay methodology, feedingstuffs, review

Résumé :
The paper intends to supplement the studies of emotional affordances of BAA by elaborating on the conception of participatory sense-making as well as developmental studies on joint attention and interattentionality. I address different spheres of expertise from the experience-based phenomenological perspective, which allows exploring the problem both from the first-person and second-person perspectives. This research presents the conception of inter-selfness that carries on M. Merleau-Ponty’s idea of intercorporeality, T. Fuchs’ et al. analysis of intersubjectivity and phenomenologically oriented psychoanalysis by E. Z. Tronick et al., R. Stolorow et al. The mechanism of BAA is presented through the conception of participatory sense-making and the idea of minimal inter-attentionality in developmental studies. The paper presents an emotional affordances scheme that illustrates the emotional regulation of BAA. By examining this process of regulation one could see in what way the self becomes an inter-self in communication. The article also postulates correlation between cultural mediation of emotional affordances and their direct accessibility from the second-person perspective. In the last part of the paper, I examine social interaction from the viewpoint of developmental studies (C. Trevarthen, V. Reddy, M. Carpenter). The developmental perspective supplements the idea of emotional regulation in interaction, by focusing on primary such forms of BAA between a caregiver and a baby, as joint attention and mutual gaze. Herein, I demonstrate how the initial forms of the positive bodily-affective attunement develop into the interattentionality and self-representation practices of the subject. This point could contribute to the theory of personal identity by exploring the process of maturing of the sense of self in its different aspects. The results of the research could be useful for further study of BAA and its pathologies. The results could also be of use for the discussion on non-human or human-like affordance-based technological interaction theory.

Résumé :
Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences between buccolingual inclination (BI) of maxillary posterior teeth in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and non-cleft palate with skeletal Class III malocclusion. We propose a method of maxillary expansion which is more suitable for patients with CLP. Methods For this retrospective study, 40 patients with CLP and 21 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion were selected. The CLP group was divided into the unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) groups. The BI of the maxillary first premolar (BI4), maxillary second premolar (BI5) and first molar (BI6) were measured using cone-beam computed tomography, and the differences between them were compared and analyzed by Student’s t-test. Results There were significant differences between cleft side BI4 and non-cleft side BI4 in the UCLP group, BI5 in the BCLP group, BI4 and BI5 in all CLP groups and the skeletal Class III malocclusion group. BI6 was similar across all three groups. Conclusions The premolars of patients with CLP do not exhibit the same regularity as those with Class III malocclusion; this may be related to surgical scarring of the cleft palate. Greater attention should be paid to the correction of BI in the maxillary expansion of patients with CLP.

Résumé :
Butterflies attract the attention of everyone, but it is difficult to identify and know their names instantly. Even for the students and researchers, identifying them in the field itself necessitates capturing and referring field guides. A novel mobile application known as Butterfly Identification App (BIA) has been developed by Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute EMPRI, Bengaluru, India to identify butterflies in the field. It is a colour-based identification application, which can be used by anyone having an android mobile phone. It is not necessary to capture the butterflies but photos taken can be compared with the photos in the colour based groups in the BIA database. The identification of all butterflies reported from Karnataka is possible through the BIA. The usage of this by proficient taxonomists, students and environmentalists can contribute to the monitoring and conservation of butterfly species in their localities. Pilot studies conducted in six green spaces in Bengaluru (12.9716° N, 77.5946° E) with GPS locations (Lalbhag: 12.9487,77.5887; Cubbon Park: 12.9798,77.5968; Doresanipalya: 12.8971,77.5905; IISc: 13.0173,77.5712; GKVK: 13.0808,77.5677; Bannerghatta: 12.785,77.5745) using the BIA is presented in the paper
