Gosselin, Natasha Eve. « Facilitators of Maternal Affective Attachment Bonds in Various Family Contexts ». Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37241.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The main objective of this thesis was to identify facilitators of strong maternal affective attachment bonds to children. First, a systematized review of the literature was conducted to gather and synthesize all the research over the last 25 years that has identified correlates and predictors of maternal affective attachment. The review found 26 articles relevant to the research question, and main findings from the existing literature were summarized. The main study of the thesis was built upon the findings of the review using data collected through an online survey of Canadian mothers. First, a latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to cluster mothers into maternal profiles based on their patterns of responses to measures of previously identified correlates and predictors of the maternal affective attachment; symptom distress related to symptoms of depression and anxiety, the dimensions of avoidance and anxiety in mothers’ adult romantic attachment, and mothers’ sense of parental efficacy and satisfaction in the maternal role. Then, a MANOVA was conducted to determine whether profile membership would account for a significant portion of the variance in the maternal affective attachment bond to children. Results indicated that maternal profiles characterized by lower symptom distress, lower romantic attachment avoidance and anxiety, and higher efficacy and satisfaction in the parental role reported higher affective attachment, and perceived more closeness and less conflict in their relationships with their children. The results of this thesis help to inform the scholarship of motherhood by identifying salient maternal experiences associated with positive family outcomes.

Résumé :
Knowledge of the deeper meanings of attachment to companion animals is limited, particularly in terms of older adults. This study employed a modified grounded theory method, a phenomenological lens and a life course perspective to gather and analyze data garnered from individual interviews and panel discussions in order to investigate the multiple dimensions of older adult men’s relationships with their companion animal dogs. Individual audio-recorded in-depth interviews and repeated panel discussions with a sub-group of the participants, convened as a panel over a three-month period, explored behavioral and emotional manifestations of attachment and the emotional bond to their companion animal dogs and the changing nature of that attachment and bond over their life span. Analysis involved open, axial and selective coding of transcripts to reveal underlying patterns within the data. Outcomes included movement toward a theory of companion animal attachment for older adult men as well as insight into the role of dogs in development of older adult men’s identities. This dissertation offers insight into the deeper understanding of the human-animal bond resulting in enhancing quality of life for both older adult male pet owners and their companion animal dogs.

Sirrine, Erica Hill. « Continuing Attachment Bonds to the Deceased : A Study of Bereaved Youth and Their Caregivers ». Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4844.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Although grief is a universal experience impacting the lives of many children and adolescents each year, not much study has been afforded to this population. In addition, the concept of a continuing attachment bond (CAB) or ongoing relationship to the deceased and its role as adaptive or maladaptive in the bereavement process is in its infancy of research among adult populations and is largely unstudied among bereaved youth. This mixed-methods study attempted to bridge the gap by examining the relationship between CABs among a sample of 50 bereaved youth (ages 11-17) and their bereaved adult caregivers. In addition, the study examined the relationship between CABs and symptomatology among these dyads. Qualitative findings revealed the most common expressions of CABs among youth and adults included attempts to maintain connection or closeness to the deceased, recalling memories about or unique characteristics of the deceased, and talking about the deceased. Quantitative results indicated there was not a significant relationship between caregiver bereavement symptomatology, caregiver CAB, and youth CAB. However, a significant relationship was revealed between youth bereavement symptomatology and youth CAB. In addition, findings revealed that youth bereavement symptomatology was the strongest predictor of CABs among youth. This study's results support the use of attachment theory in bereavement practice and suggest the need for social workers to incorporate both grief symptomatology and the ongoing relationship to the deceased in assessment and intervention with bereaved youth.

Coyle, Anne-Marie. « The complex world of hide and seek : investigations into the use and meaning of hide and seek play and how it is related to processes of change within a looked after boy engaged in psychoanalytic psychotherapy ». Thesis, University of East London, 2015. http://repository.tavistockandportman.ac.uk/1795/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The aim of this study has been to investigate the significance of hide and seek play as a central feature within the intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy of one looked after child, whose referred symptom of separation anxiety improved during the course of treatment. A mixed methods modified form of thematic analysis has been used to analyse the data and Max QDA has been introduced for data organisational purposes and to support analytic rigour. This single case study is approached from a Critical Realist stance and key findings support the argument for the validity of extending the relationship between the theoretical paradigms of Complexity Theory and Psychoanalysis, beyond the metaphorical towards the methodological with implications for efficiency, triangulation and generalisability of findings; issues which have been historically problematic in single case study research. The mixed methods analytic approach has allowed for the quantitative tracking of frequency and quality of a single marker of change, in the form of hide and seek play, across the course of the treatment. This has revealed an overall pattern in the form of a trajectory, containing properties of a self-organising complex dynamic system. Two levels of abstraction have been identified and investigated demonstrating the presence of sel-similar functioning across different levels of complexity. A ‘period of oscillation’ between variables has been identified which is associated qualitatively to a period of psychological growth and development within the child. This finding is consistent with emerging evidence in the broader field of psychology for the occurrence of a period of critical instability associated with positive treatment outcome. A key qualitative finding is the evidence for the four different sub-types of hide and seek play. This may have implications for the understanding of hide and seek play in every day life and significantly in the lives of looked after children.

Klepper, Josie. « Examining the Relationship between Offending Behaviors of Adult Male Offenders and the Social Bonds of Attachment and Commitment ». Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3396.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Using a secondary data set with no identifying information, this study evaluated the relationship between the adult male offending behaviors of alcoholism, drug dependency, and violent behavior and the social bonds of attachment and commitment that the adult male offender may have with his parents. The data was collected in 1970 as part of a study used to examine the correlates of violent criminal behavior and offending. This study was later titled the “Longitudinal Study of Violent Criminal Behavior in the United States (1970 – 1984).” The current study utilized Hirschi’s (1969) social bond theory in examining the correlation between offending behaviors, such as drug dependency, alcoholism, and the commission of a violent offense, among adult male offenders and the presence and strength of the social bonds of attachment and commitment.

Résumé :
Robotics agents are meant to play an increasingly larger role in our everyday lives. To be successfully integrated in our environment, robots will need to develop and display adaptive, robust, and socially suitable behaviours. To tackle these issues, the robotics research community has invested a considerable amount of efforts in modelling robotic architectures inspired by research on living systems, from ethology to developmental psychology. Following a similar approach, this thesis presents the research results of the modelling and experimental testing of robotic architectures based on affective and attachment bonds between young infants and their primary caregiver. I follow a bottom-up approach to the modelling of such bonds, examining how they can promote the situated development of an autonomous robot. Specifically, the models used and the results from the experiments carried out in laboratory settings and with naive users demonstrate the impact such affective bonds have on the learning outcomes of an autonomous robot and on the perception and behaviour of humans. This research leads to the emphasis on the importance of the interplay between the dynamics of the regulatory behaviours performed by a robot and the responsiveness of the human partner. The coupling of such signals and behaviours in an attachment-like dyad determines the nature of the outcomes for the robot, in terms of learning or the satisfaction of other needs. The experiments carried out also demonstrate of the attachment system can help a robot adapt its own social behaviour to that of the human partners, as infants are thought to do during their development.

Résumé :
The current work elucidate the theoretical and methodological aspects of a research project aimed to explore current parenthood, in particular the choice of remaining childless and its relational and intergenerational origins. An overview of social, demographic and psychosocial studies suggested an interpretative model of the phenomenon that considers the different pathways leading to parenthood as the outcome of different opportunities to develop caregiving abilities within the network of family relations. According to this framework, the aim of this study is to investigate, following multiple levels of representation, how the quality of the original family ties and their elaboration in early adulthood and the quality of couple-relationship influence the development of caregiving abilities and, thus, the maturation of the choice of being parents. The incidence of these multi-level variables has been investigated in a large group of married/cohabiting couples, containing couples without children (188 individuals) and pregnant couples (208 individuals), and a large group of young adults, containing currently studying (214) and employed young adult (213). It is argued that, from a shared socio-economic and cultural condition, affective and attachment experiences within the original family and in the couple-relationship can influence the choice of being or not being parents, suggesting that young adults and couples may be exposed to a great vulnerability in front of the changes that parenthood involve. The measures employed focused on the perception and the orientation of affective experience with the parents and with the partner and include a large set of self-report instruments and a smaller set of interviews which allowed to deepen and verify the data at different level of representation.

Résumé :
The transition to a low carbon future is necessary to ensure humanity’s sustainable future, yet the expanding introduction of renewable energy technologies (RETs) is a central driver for transformations in rural landscapes worldwide. Introducing renewable energy (RE) infrastructures in rural landscapes raises concerns about the reduced naturalness and attractiveness of such landscapes for tourism and recreation as well as the transformation of people-place bonds as established through people’s interactions with and experiences in the surrounding landscapes. Few have examined how landscape transformation resulting from RE developments reshapes land users’ bonds with places. Furthermore, previous research has primarily relied on crosssectional quantitative data. This study addresses that literature gap and uses the Nature's Contributions to People (NCP) framework and the evolutionary theory of place attachment as theoretical underpinnings to examine how individuals perceive and experience evolving landscapes. By exploring individuals’ perceptions of and affective bonds with physical landscapes, this study provides a holistic understanding of the bonds that different groups of people may have with a certain place and how these bonds are manifested in the context of RE development and RET-related place change. In-depth interviews with private landowners and recreationists from the municipality of Mönsterås, Sweden, and observations in the Åby-Alebo wind park allow for the coconstruction of narratives reflecting individual accounts of meaning-making processes. The findings demonstrate that place attachment was evident in respondents’ descriptions of how they make a place meaningful to themselves through personal experiences and (recreational) practices. Along with landscape changes, for some individuals, meanings towards and bond with place evolved as well. The discussion shows that the emotional relationship to place reflects respondents’ particular journey in the world and over time. The study also highlights that differences in how recreationists and landowners bond with places is manifested in a changing context, disclosing the relationality of place attachment along social, practical, and temporal contextual factors. This points to encouraging possibilities for discussing the reconceptualization of humanity’s transition towards a low carbon future and fostering more sustainable landscape management in rural recreation areas.

This dissertation assesses, firstly, the importance of the time that parents spend with their adopted children between arrival and schooling and how this affects on the psychological adjustment of the child. Secondly, values the importance of openness in family communication about the child's origins and previous history and the impact that it has on the psychological adjustment of the child. Finally, checks whether the psychological adjustment and openness in family communication are predictable variables of a secure attachment in the internationally adopted adolescent. The results support our hypotheses, concluding that adopted children who spend more time with their parents before schooling have a better psychological adjustment. Same with the openness in family communication: those menors who feel or perceive in their parents an open attitude to discuss issues related to their adoptive history, present a better psychological adjustment than those who perceive difficulties by the parents to talk about his past. Finally, the results also support the hypothesis that openness in family communication and psychological adjustment are predictive variables of a secure attachment in adolescence. These results highlight the importance of establishing a stable and secure bond between child and adoptive parents from the first moment of the child's arrival. Jointly with the open in family communication make it easier for the child to develop a secure attachment with his parents, from which to enter into adulthood with a more solid base.

Résumé :
Mental health practitioners who incorporate animal-assisted interventions into clinical practice harness the human-animal bond for therapeutic benefit. According to the Animal-Assisted Therapy in Counseling Competencies, practitioners have a duty to understand the complex relational processes within animal-assisted interventions in counseling (AAI-C). These bonding processes may resemble that of an attachment bond in which the client desires to maintain closeness to the practitioner and therapy animal as a result of feeling safe and secure. Researchers studying attachment in the human-animal bond have stated that attachment processes may occur within other human-animal relationships, such as between a guardian and a companion animal. However, there is no empirical research on the attachment processes occurring between humans and therapy animals in AAI-C or how these processes affect the bond between the practitioner and client. A component of the working alliance, maintaining a quality bond can improve treatment outcomes in counseling. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how attachment to a therapy animal impacts the attachment bond between a mental health practitioner and client. Participants completed an online survey with four measures to study the following: (a) client attachment to the therapy animal, (b) practitioner attachment to the therapy animal, (c) the bond between the practitioner and client, and (d) the impact of utilizing an animal in counseling sessions. Data analyses included a multiple regression to determine how practitioners' perceptions of the attachment processes within AAI-C best explain the bond with their clients. Descriptive analysis revealed that practitioners perceived high quality bonding within AAI-C, particularly in their own attachment to the therapy animal. Results of the multiple regression indicated practitioners' attachment to the therapy animal was a significant predictor of the working alliance and bond between the practitioner and client. Practitioners who perceived themselves as extremely skilled in working with the clients' presenting issue also had a statistically significant effect on the working alliance and bond when compared to practitioners who felt less skilled. Implications for practitioners and counselor educators are provided. Limitations and areas of future research are also discussed.

This creative writing research project examines housing instability in Australia and its consequences on the way we connect to our dwellings. The project asks in what ways the lyric poem is uniquely suited to writing about the intersections of architecture and ephemeral place attachment that occur in shared rentals. I answer this question via a manuscript of lyric poems, After the Demolition, and accompanying exegetical essay. My practice embodies this argument by using the Queenslander-style house—itself uniquely suited to share housing—in inner-city Brisbane as a locus.

Research specific to gender and violent juvenile delinquency is sparse due to two factors: a substantially higher incidence of delinquent male violence and the cost associated with drawing adequate female samples is frequently prohibitive (Howell, 2003). Gender-differences are explored in a sample of arrested juveniles using an expanded measure of parental attachment [bond]. The dimensions of emotional attachment, supervision, and time-involvement with a self-reported caregiver are explored for between group differences and association with recognized risk factors for juvenile delinquency. Findings indicate that while statistically significant between-group differences are not found in the presentation of attachment, descriptive differences do exist. Females demonstrated a higher level of impairment in emotional attachment to a caregiver than their male counterparts; females arrested for a violent offense reported the highest level of problem in this area. Findings also indicate that the mechanism of attachment appears to function differently by gender group in terms of association with risk factors for delinquency. Time-involvement emerged as an important predictor for the full group and the female group, particularly in relationship with higher risk for antisocial peer involvement. Support for a gendered experience of parental attachment [social bond] is provided. Emotional attachment and time-involvement were found to be important predictors for the full group, while supervision was not indicated as important to any risk factor or to recidivism. The current research advances knowledge on gender-related differences within delinquency. Through enhancing the understanding of the complex gender-specific influences on juvenile crime, criminal justice and human service systems may better learn to address these needs thereby reducing both entrance rates into the juvenile justice system and recidivism.

Résumé :
The aim of this study was to investigate if the dog’s behaviour and the interactions between the dog and the owner   differ depending on lifestyle, breed or sex of the dog. For this we employed the Strange Situation Procedure, a test inspired from Mary Ainsworth´s study,   which investigated the attachment of human infants to their mothers. There were two breeds, Border collie and Shetland sheepdog and a total of 58 dogs that participated in this study. The two breeds were divided into two lifestyles, competition dogs and pet dogs. A PCA was used to find correlations between the behavioural variables and the factors were then analysed in a Mann Whitney U test to test the differences between breed, sex and lifestyle. In this study no differences in behaviour between the two lifestyles were shown. However, the results showed that there were some differences between the two breeds and between the two sexes in behavioural expressions. The differences between the breeds were quite expected because there are many different breeds today which are selected for various morphology and behavioural traits which could influence their behaviour. The difference in behaviour between the two sexes can be because of evolutionary heredity. Further studies on this subject should have bigger and more even sample size, longer separation time, a more balanced gender distribution of the owners and to also analyze the cortisol levels.

Résumé :
A positive sibling relationship may protect individuals against poor developmental outcomes associated with psychological maltreatment. The current study assessed the moderating role of a positive sibling relationship in childhood and adulthood on associations between early psychological maltreatment and adult attachment anxiety and avoidance. College students (N = 270) completed self-report measures of psychological maltreatment, sibling relationship quality, and adult attachment. Psychological maltreatment in childhood was associated with an increase in attachment anxiety and avoidance, while a positive sibling relationship was related to a decrease in levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance. As predicted, a positive childhood sibling relationship mitigated the negative effects of psychological neglect in childhood on attachment. Similarly, a positive sibling relationship decreased the levels of attachment anxiety associated with isolation in childhood.

Résumé :
The current study examined the influence of parental warmth/support on adolescent psychological well-being (i.e., depression and psychosocial maturity), and how the impact of parental warmth/support on these outcomes may differ based on the relationship an adolescent is able to develop with at least one teacher at school (i.e., teacher-student bond). It was of particular interest to explore whether a close teacher-student bond might moderate the effect a parent-child relationship lacking warmth and support has on adolescent depressive symptoms and psychosocial maturity. Participants were a sample of 15-year-old adolescents (N= 815) from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to explore the potential interaction effects of teacher bonding and parental warmth/support on depressive symptoms and psychosocial maturity in 15-year-old adolescents. Results suggested that the teacher-adolescent relationship moderated the impact of parental warmth/support on adolescent depression scores for female adolescents only. The teacher-adolescent relationship did not moderate the influence of parental warmth/support on adolescent psychosocial maturity.

Résumé :
Background: Some women develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress following childbirth. There is preliminary evidence that cognitive variables may be associated with the development or maintenance of these symptoms. Research indicates that symptoms of posttraumatic stress following childbirth may have negative consequences for mother-infant relationship outcomes. However, these may be attributable to comorbid symptoms of depression. Further evidence is required regarding the nature of the relationships between these variables. Methods: An internet based cross-sectional questionnaire design was employed to test hypothesised relationships between maternal attachment experiences, metacognition, symptoms of PTSD and depression and perceptions of the mother-infant bond, in an analogue sample of new mothers. Structural equation modelling was employed for the principal analysis. Results: The final structural model demonstrated a good fit to sample data. Metacognition fully mediated the relationship between attachment experiences and postnatal psychological outcomes. The association between posttraumatic stress and maternal perceptions of the mother-infant bond was fully mediated by depression. Conclusions: Metacognition may have a key role in the development and maintenance of postnatal psychological distress. If clinically significant postnatal depression is identified, screening for posttraumatic stress is strongly indicated.

Résumé :
This cross-sectional study explored the relationship between pet ownership, attachment, and psychological health among community-dwelling senior citizens and evaluated the impact of the placement of an aquarium into a regional senior center. General health, depression, social support, pet attitudes, pet attachment, pet relationships, and attitudes about the aquarium were assessed among 104 members of a senior center. Symptoms of depression were identified in 17.3% of the participants. Pets were a significant form of social support and attachment to pet owners. No significant relationship was observed between pet ownership, pet attachment, and psychological health. Positive health effects were reported among participants who observed the fish aquarium. While the relationship between pet ownership, human-animal interactions, and psychological well-being remains unclear, it appears that older adults can benefit from animal-assisted activities and therapy programs. Animal-assisted activities and therapy programs may be useful adjunctive therapies for depression in community-dwelling senior citizens.

The purpose of this study is to gain a greater understanding of some underlying causes of why people commit criminal acts. The general questions of the study are; in what way does the social circle of friends affect the individual’s prerequisites for developing a criminal lifestyle? How can these underlying causes of crime be explained and understood? The questions are answered by semi-structured interviews with five individuals with previous criminal background. With the use of a thematic analysis method the interview material was structured into three themes that have been formulated based on the datasets that have been collected. The analysis is done with the use of previous research and theories of differential association and reinforcements, symbolic interactionism, labeling and social bond. The study shows that the interview participants end up in crime as a result of their growth, school situation and their circle of friends interacted in a negative way. Common to all those interviewed informants is that they had insufficient contact with both parents during childhood. The lack of assurance from the parents was something they instead searched for in their social circle of friends. The informants schooling was consisted of poor school performances, and they often socialized with friends who also misbehaved.

Stemming from a questioning initiated in a professional practice of psychosociolog which questioned the place of the animal in autobiographical stories, this research was carried out with the aim of exploring the relationship with the animal within the framework of the educational sciences. To build this focus of research, multidisciplinary theoretical references were mobilized, together with a research process within the clinical framework of psychoanalytic orientation, taking into account the counter transferential process of the investigator. An exploratory pathway has been enriched through the analysis of two clinical interviews. This first step highlights the positive impact of the human-animal attachment in the construction of the psychic identity of the human being. In this research, the notions of attachment and the construction of the relation to knowledge are the key theoretical and clinical concepts, enriched by contributions of W. R Bion and D. W. Winnicott. It is on this basis that was made the choice of the veterinarians as a corpus of this research, as this profession is highly concerned by the relation to the animal. Five semi-directive clinical interviews were carried out with veterinarians practising in liberal exercise, then analysed on the basis of their latent psychological dynamic. The main results show that for these professionals, the link to the animal developed during childhood is at the origin of their career choice. Also, it is this link, evolved through the time, which seems mobilized as a psychic resource to invest and succeed their studies. It also appears that the approach to the knowledge built during their interaction with animals as a child represents a possible resource to better understand the relationship between the owner and his animal during a veterinary consultation. Another result of this research shows that the interest for the animal as a child allows some subjects to develop cognitive capabilities which are mobilisable in ulterior relational and professional skills

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to examine whether therapists' responses to the Adult Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ, Hazan & Shaver, 1987) and the Adult Attachment Scale (AAS; Collins & Read, 1990) would be predictive of the strength of client and therapist reported Bond scores on the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Form (WAI-S; Tracey & Kokotovic, 1989). A total of 40 Lower Mainland of British Columbia therapists participated in Phase 1 of the study by completing the AAQ, the AAS and a demographic questionnaire. A total of 10 of these therapists participated in Phase 2 of the study. Each of the Phase 2 therapists recruited three clients to participate in the study. Immediately following the third session, both therapists and clients completed the WAI-S. Clients also completed the AAQ and a short demographic questionnaire. Although an uneven distribution of attachment types in the sample precluded any formal statistical analysis, visual examination of therapists' responses to the attachment measures suggests that therapists who chose the Secure AAQ description obtained higher mean scores on the AAS Close and Depend dimensions and lower AAS Anxiety dimension scores than therapists who chose the insecure AAQ descriptions. Correlation matrices were compiled to examine the strength of relationships among the standings of therapists on the AAS dimensions, on therapist ratings of the WAI-S and client ratings of the WAI-S. No significant correlations were found in relation to therapists' AAS dimension scores and therapist or client WAI-S ratings. Significant correlations were found for both client and therapist WAI-S interscale ratings and between client and therapist WAI-S ratings. A t-test was carried out to examine high and low WAI-S Bond ratings of clients in relation to therapists' WAI-S ratings. Significant differences were found between the WAI-S Bond ratings of therapists whose clients were identified as having high WAI-S Bond ratings and the WAI-S Bond ratings of therapists whose clients were identified as having low WAI-S ratings. The study found no evidence that attachment information in general predicts the strength of working alliance bonds. However, support was found for the predictive ability of the AAS Depend dimension. The Depend dimension scores of therapists whose clients reported higher WAI-S Bond strength were significantly different from the Depend dimension scores of therapists whose clients reported lower WAI-S Bond strength.

Résumé :
Immigrant communities are a part of every city and town in the United States. Sentiments towards immigrants, however, continue to vary, but in recent years, anti-immigrant sentiments have become more widely encountered, especially because of the recent presidential election (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2016). A lack of knowledge and representation of diverse cultures, along with recurring negative rhetoric, may influence how immigrant populations are received. This report argues that acknowledging culture and heritage can strengthen cultural bonds, create and celebrate a unique city identity, and improve cultural representation. The City of Westfield, Massachusetts, located in Hampden County, will be studied in this report. Amongst the several immigrant communities in the city, the Polish population is one that is present, but underrepresented. Through participant interviews, elements of place attachment, cultural representation, and cultural values will be studied. This research hopes to encourage greater cultural representation by enhancing place attachment and representation for present and future immigrant residents. This report will also aim to contribute to the greater studies and literature surrounding cultural planning by examining the importance of culture and heritage in the planning field and offering recommendations.

Products on the market are getting homogeneous dramatically, homogeneous products are increasing day by day. In this situation, consumers are using brands as the benchmark, which leads to more frequent brand switching. Therefore, how to promote long-term relationship with brands is the biggest challenge facing economic behavior today, and one of the possible solutions is to attach. The purpose of this study is to explore whether there is a correlation between the relationship bonds and the brand attachment between two variables, taking the mobile phone industry as an example. There are two motivations for choosing the mobile phone industry for research purposes. One is everyone has the mobile phone that connects people and objects through mobile phones and enters the Internet of things generation. The other is that the mobile phone industry conforms to the relationship bonds, including the customer's cognition of the financial bonds, social bonds and structural bonds of the products. This study mainly focused on students of the Chinese Culture University, and used the convenience sampling method to distribute the structured questionnaires. A total of 450 questionnaires are collected and 30 valid questionnaires are received after deleting the invalid questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and tests of hypothesis are conducted via SPSS 18.0 with 420 valid questionnaires returned. This study found that the influence of brand attachment is public self-consciousness (control variables), beyond the public after the influence of self-consciousness of brand attachment, relationship was significantly positively related to link to the brand attachment. Finally, according to these findings, practical suggestions are offered to the manager of mobile phone industry.

Résumé :
This paper explores the drama therapeutic approach of Developmental Transformations and how its inherent play processes may be beneficial to the strengthening of attachment between children with autism and their parents. Through this exploration, theoretical connections will be made linking the potential therapeutic benefits of Developmental Transformations (DvT), an intervention based on a developmental paradigm, to the gaps in developmental functioning seen in those with autism. Many theories advocate children's engagement in play due to its tremendous developmental benefits; however, the action-oriented play approach of DvT has never been applied to children with autism. Benefits of DvT include increased spontaneity, increased physical expression, and an increased ability to access and project internal emotional states, all of which are considered deficient areas in children with autism. This paper also explores attachment theory in relation to the fostering of emotional growth through play interventions. Based on the core deficits associated with autism, some research indicates that children with autism are prone to disorganized attachments. Parental participation in play processes with their children, such as occurs in DvT, facilitates engagement and create a shared experience with their children. Ultimately, this generates meaningful associations for children with autism between the play experience and their parents, thus contributing to the development of securely-attached relationships.

Résumé :
Scenarios of significant adverse consequences of hazards related to sea level are expected to increase in magnitude and frequency in the future. The district of Lisbon and specifically the area where the neighborhood of Segundo Torrão is located are identified as the most vulnerable concerning sea level rise impacts. This thesis aims to understand how such coastal community make sense of and cope with such events by bringing together models of place attachment and community resilience. By doing so, politics of place identity are discussed in terms of environmental injustice. Also, an examination of the role of the media - as a social amplifier of risk - in representing both the neighborhood and related hazards is included. A Participatory Action Research perspective guided the process of data collection of 2 semi-structured interview and 1 focus group; a media analysis of 56 articles was performed. All data were analyzed through Thematic Analysis.

Ribeiro, Robyn Lea. « How is gentrification lived : a psycho-social study of the experience of gentrification in Lisbon ». Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/22466.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Gentrification and Touristification are two concepts that over the past years have been focused on in various European countries, due to their implications for communities that live in certain neighbourhoods. The study of these concepts is crucial to understand the changes that have occurred in neighbourhoods at an economic, social, and psychological level. The present dissertation aims to understand the experience of Gentrification and Touristification of those who continue living in the neighbourhood at the level of place attachment, social bonds and emotions triggered. We executed a qualitative study with a sample of seven Santos-o-Velho neighbourhood inhabitants (in Lisbon) diverging in age, gender, social class, and schooling, that live or have lived in the neighbourhood for at least five years. Each inhabitant participated in an interview using the walking interviews method and the results were determined through a thematic analysis. The results show that these two concepts have significant consequences for the participants: there is a clear preference for the way things were in the past, since they feel that the neighbourhood no longer provides services and spaces adequate for the pre-existing community, decreasing their place dependence to the neighbourhood and consequently their emotional attachment to the place; social bonds within the neighbourhood have suffered alterations due to increase of foreigners and people with greater economic power living in the area, decreasing familiarity and solidarity; lastly, these changes incite feelings of sadness and grief.

The concepts of internalized and externalized continuing bonds have been proposed and examined incorporated into bereavement process based on attachment viewpoint. However, the findings of related studies were inconsistent. Therefore, the present thesis study has three objectives. First, it aimed to elucidate the associations of specific attachments and post-bereavement cognitions with the two continuing bonds. Second, the study planned to re-analyze the construct of grief symptoms, and elucidate the associations of continuing bonds with grief related symptoms. Third, the predictive relationships between internalized and externalized continuing bonds as well as the differences of impact between unexpected and expected death on post-bereavement cognitions and grief related symptoms will be explored. The study recruited 176 participants who experienced the loss of beloved other. Participants were asked to complete the questionnaires about bereavement event, specific attachments, post-bereavement cognitions, continuing bonds, grief symptoms, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and depression symptoms. Factor analysis, regression analysis, t-test were performed. Results show: 1) Grief symptoms consisted of two components, i.e., sorrows at deceased and nullification in self. 2) Specific avoidance attachment negatively predicted internalized continuing bond. Concerning post-bereavement cognitions, negative self and negative world cognition positively predicted internalized and externalized continuing bonds, while self-blame cognition positively predicted externalized continuing bond. 3) The relationship between specific anxiety attachment and externalized continuing bond was separately moderated by post-bereavement negative self, negative world or self-blame, while the relationship between specific anxiety attachment and internalized continuing bond was moderated only by self-blame. 4) Both internalized and externalized continuing bonds positively predicted sorrows at deceased grief, nullification in self grief, posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms. 5) Externalized continuing bond mediated the relationship of internalized continuing bond with sorrows at deceased grief, nullification in self grief, posttraumatic stress or depression symptoms, but internalized continuing bond only mediated the relationship between externalized continuing bond and sorrows at deceased grief symptoms. 6) The relationship from internalized to externalized continuing bonds was moderated by specific anxiety attachment or post-bereavement self-blame, but no significant result was noted in the reverse direction. 7) The unexpected death group showed significantly more post-bereavement cognitions and grief related symptoms, compared to the expected death group. Based on above findings, the associations among continuing bonds, specific attachments, post-bereavement cognitions, and grief were discussed, using interactive viewpoint of relationship and cognition, to explore the plausible development of internalized and externalized continuing bonds in response to loss. Finally, applications, clinical implications, limitations and future direction of research were further addressed.

Lem, Michelle. « Effects of Pet Ownership on Street-Involved Youth in Ontario ». Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/3600.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis is comprised of three studies examining the effects of pet ownership on street-involved youth in Ontario. As a relatively new area of study, issues surrounding pet ownership among homeless youth were first explored qualitatively. The first two studies utilized a series of one-on-one interviews with both pet-owning youth and youth service professionals to determine the major roles, relationships, challenges and effects that pets have in the lives of street-involved youth. The four themes that emerged from both of these interview groups included “pet before self” where youth placed the needs of their pet ahead of their own, physical effects of pet ownership, emotional effects of pet ownership, and the benefits and liabilities of pet ownership. Findings related to these themes, such as the strength of the human-animal bond and pets as drivers of change are discussed. Information derived from the qualitative interviews with pet-owning youth and youth workers contributed to the development of a questionnaire administered to a convenience sample of 89 pet-owning street-involved youth and 100 street-involved youth who were not pet owners in four urban centres in Ontario. This study sought to validate findings from previous qualitative research, provide descriptive information on the pet-owning youth population, their pets, and their human-animal relationship, as well as assess pet attachment based on the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale. Additionally, pet owners and non-pet owners were compared in terms of depression based on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, shelter use and drug use. The findings include a universally high level of pet attachment among this unique pet owning population, providing opportunity for youth to experience not only beneficial emotional and social support, but also the negative emotional consequences of pet loss. Pet ownership was also demonstrated to be significantly and negatively correlated with regular shelter use. Through logistic modelling and controlling for participant gender and regular drug use (of drugs other than cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana), pet ownership was found to be negatively associated with depression. Using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, this thesis provides evidence of the beneficial as well as the potential negative impacts of pet ownership for street-involved youth. It also provides the first quantitative description of this population and their human-animal relationship, while demonstrating support for further research into the effects of pet ownership on street-involved youth, and consideration for expanded education and service provision to support youth and their pets among youth services.

Résumé :
Researchers have demonstrated clear benefits to humans in their relationships with companion animals; however, little is known about how these animals may benefit from their relationships with humans. The purpose of the current study is to investigate potential benefits to a pet of living in a household, as defined by an array of specific pet owner behaviors. A second purpose is to investigate the relationship between self-reported attachment to a pet and dimensions of potentially beneficial owner behaviors on behalf of that animal. Participants in the current study were pet-owning undergraduate students (N = 501) from a large Midwestern university who were surveyed on an array of behaviors they may perform for or with a companion animal. Self-reported attachment to the animal was measured using the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (Johnson, Garrity, & Stallones, 1992). Factor analysis resulted in five dimensions of behavior for dog owners (n = 350), named Indoor/Outdoor, Attention, Inclusion, Well-being, and Safety. Four dimensions were found for cat owners (n = 151) and named Indoor/Outdoor, Indulgence, Possessions, and Independence. The Indoor/Outdoor dimension was similar to factors found in previous research. The rest of the dimensions appear to be uniquely important in terms of either dog or cat ownership. Regression analysis using factor scores to predict attachment revealed that 38.6% of the variance in attachment scores for dog owners and 23.6% for cat owners was explained by the dimensions. The results of the factor analysis provide a picture of what human care giving might mean, in terms of beneficial behavior, to the animal. The results also indicate that the basic needs of companion animals are being met regardless of the degree of attachment: low attachment may not necessarily mean poor care. Attachment does, however, appear to make a difference in the life of a companion animal in terms of enrichment. Dog owners who report higher attachment tend to include the dog in family activities, and provide certain kinds of attentions. Cat owners who report higher attachment are more likely to have a cat that stays close by their side, and are also more likely to provide gifts and treats to the cat.

Résumé :
Skeletal morphology and pathology are frequently used to support theories of activity patterns in prehistoric populations. In this study, the adult forearm (n = 307 radii and ulnae) and wrist bones (n = 500 scaphoid and lunate) from the Tell Abraq tomb, United Arab Emirates (ca. 2300 BC), were assessed for morphological variations and pathologies. Specifically, musculoskeletal attachment sites (MAS) were evaluated for indications of stress and articular surfaces were assessed for the presence of osteoarthritis (OA). OA was prevalent on the distal forearm bones (radius 40% and ulna 35%). Additionally, OA at the proximal ulna (73%) strongly correlated with (MAS) stress marker scores of elbow joint flexion (brachialis: rs = .323, p<.01) and extension (triceps: rs = .473, p<.01; anconeus: rs = .330, p<.01) as well as forearm rotation (supinator: r s = .373, p<.01; pronator teres: rs = 344, p<.01). The medial head of the triceps, anconeus and supinator muscles provide medial stability at the humeroulnar joint. Musculoskeletal attachment site stress indicators for the thumb were indicative of repeated or strained movements in extension and abduction and correlated strongly with proximal OA at the ulna (extensor pollicis longus: rs = .452, p<.01). Side did not correlate with OA, probable sex or any of the MAS stress markers. An unusual finding of an elevated transverse ridge was observed at the trochlear notch of the ulna. Presence of the transverse midtrochlear ridge (TTR) (58%) was positively correlated with proximal elbow joint OA (r s = .330, p<.01) and assigned sex (rs = .263, p<.01). Eighty-five percent of assessed radii had a depressed facet for the attachment site of the volar carpal ligament and 34% of the scaphoid bones had an exaggerated dorsal ridge for attachment of the dorsal carpal ligament of the wrist. The high levels of OA at the distal radius and proximal ulna in conjunction with the MAS data lend support to the theory that the individuals from the Tell Abraq tomb were engaged in regular heavy and repetitive bimanual activities with their upper extremities.

Palavras-
ABSTRACT: This study aims to contribute for the understanding of the relationship between Parental Satisfaction and Parental Bonding in the father figure. No studies were found to date that establish the relationship between the two proposed dimensions, Parental Bonding and Parental Satisfaction, particularly in terms of the masculine father figure. We focused the study on the father figure since its importance is continuously and more importantly recognised and valued in the development of progeny. The study included 155 male participants who were contacted by telephone and voluntarily agreed to answer to the material made available on line. The tools used were far beyond the socio-demographic characterization questionnaire, the Parent Satisfaction Scale (PSS – Parent Satisfaction Scale from Halverson and Duke, 1991, Martins & Leal (2007) and the Parental Bonding Instrument, (PBI – Parental Bonding Instrument from Parker, Tupling and Brown, (1979), Ramos, Leal and Maroco (2006). The following results are emphasized: parents with a professional active life reveal care perceptions and autonomy denial and, the lowest and the highest wage levels influence the burden and the importance of parentality. The perception of psychological autonomy denial has a significant weight in parents without a conjugal situation. Lastly, we confirm that the absence of chronic diseases or serious incapacities reveals parental pleasures, instrumental autonomy and psychological autonomy denial.

Case, Somer LeAnn. « The Ties that Bind : A Secondary Analysis of Family Structure and Attachment Strength on Adolescent Sexual Decision Making ». Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/2461.

Résumé :
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
In sociological literature and in health policies on adolescent sexual behavior, researchers, educators, and policymakers continue to express their concern with the high number of adolescents engaging in an early sexual debut because of pregnancy risk, high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In particular, much attention is given to the young age of sexual experiences among Black youth compared to those of other races. However, for Black female adolescents, the experiences and dilemmas they face can be more compelling, because the “Black female experience defies a singular definition” (Rozie-Battle 2002, p. 60). This study will fill a gap in previous literature on sexual decisions among Black teens by moving beyond a discussion of only negative decisions. If attachment and social bond theory are taken into consideration, family instability could weaken attachment and lead to riskier sex by weakening controls on undesirable behavior like condom non-use. These same theories would also pose that weakened attachment between family members and adolescent women can create replacement ties and stronger bonds to a sexual partner, which in turn leads to more sex, but not necessarily riskier sex. Utilizing the Young Women’s Project (YWP) at Indiana University, the present study investigates both of these hypotheses.

Résumé :
In the first, theoretical part, Attachment Theory is summarized: terms, patterns of attachment behavior of children, adults' mental representations of attachment, attachment developement, application of Attachment Theory into psychotherapy, as well as statistical contexts. Research work then involves qualitative analysis of attachment styles in current relationships of women from shelters for mothers and children in Czech Republic; here the Current Relationship Interview (CRI) method is applied. As a result, it gives 80 % insecure (60 % dismissing, 20 % preoccupied) and 20 % secure persons. This differs significantly from standard population, where 59 % persons are identified as secure. Qualitative analysis of 19 CRI scales gives some characteristic features of relationship of such a woman, e.g., remarkable lack of love and high conflict between her parents, lacking in love with partner, infrequent or inadequate caregiving and inability to seek or accept care from partner. Secure respondents differ from insecure ones by higher rate of loving and ability to provide care, but in the total evaluation they are on borderline of attachment insecurity. The findings are discussed with respect to possibility of education of social workers and applications on work with these women, which (besides lack of existential...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of expectant fathers’ accompanying birth education program in childbirth on stress, accompanying efficacy, couples intimate bond, parents-infant attachment and women’s childbirth self-efficacy. The experimental study design was used. A total of 88 expectant parents who were at 34 weeks gestation, and who met the study criteria, were allocated by randomization to experimental (n = 46) and control (n = 42) groups. The subjects were recruited from a northern regional hospital. For the experimental group, the birth education program was implemented. Members of the control group were given a slip of paper entitled “Small tips for the expectant fathers who accompany their partners in labor and delivery.” The expectant couples completed their basic personal information, Perceived Stress Scale, Intimate Bond Measure, expectant fathers’ completed Expectant Father Accompany Efficacy Scale; women completed Childbirth Self-efficacy Questionnaire when they were recruited. In two days after delivery, all the couples completed Perceived Stress Scale, Intimate Bond Measure, expectant fathers completed Expectant Father Accompany Efficacy Scale and Paternal Attachment Inventory, and women completed Childbirth Self-efficacy Questionnaire. Four-six week postpartum, all the couples completed Intimate Bond Measure; expectant fathers completed Paternal Attachment Inventory. The duration of data collection was from January 2016 to June 2016. The results of this study showed expectant fathers’ accompanying birth education program in childbirth on stress, fathers of the two groups in the prenatal period (14.26 vs. 14.40, p > .05) and on second day postpartum (14.28 vs. 14.88, p > .05) had not significantly; mothers in the prenatal period (17.63 vs. 15.90, p > .05) had not significantly, and on second day postpartum (15.02 vs. 15.95, p < .05) had significantly. Expectant fathers in accompany efficacy, in the prenatal period (74.04 vs. 71.74, p > .05) had not significantly, and on second day postpartum (58.85 vs. 63.07, p < .05) had significantly. Couples Intimate Bond: care-intimate bond that fathers had no significantly in the prenatal period (25.87 vs. 26.43, p > .05) and four-six week postpartum (26.26 vs. 26.24, p > .05), had significantly on second day postpartum (27.83 vs. 26.50, p < .05); control-Intimate bond that fathers had no significantly in the prenatal period (13.96 vs. 14.86, p > .05) and on second day postpartum (13.35 vs. 15.00, p > .05) and four-six week postpartum (13.78 vs. 14.48, p > .05). Care-Intimate Bond that mothers had no significantly in the prenatal period (26.54 vs. 26.64, p > .05) and four-six week postpartum (26.20 vs. 26.10, p > .05), had significantly on second day postpartum (29.33 vs. 27.36, p < .05); Control-Intimate Bond that fathers had no significantly in the prenatal period (9.80 vs. 9.33, p > .05) and on second day postpartum (8.70 vs. 8.95, p > .05) and four-six week postpartum (9.70 vs. 9.48, p > .05). In the women’s childbirth self-efficacy, outcome expectations of self-efficacy, had no significantly in the prenatal period (118.37 vs. 112.95, p > .05), had significantly on second day postpartum (124.07 vs. 106.81, p < .05); efficacy expectations of self-efficacy, had no significantly in the prenatal period (98.43 vs. 97.93, p > .05), had significantly on second day postpartum (117.59 vs. 105.07, p < .05). In the father-infant attachment, there was no significantly on second day postpartum (65.11 vs. 64.14, p >.05) and four-six week postpartum (67.28 vs. 64.45, p >.05). In conclusion, expectant fathers’ accompanying birth education program was able to effectively relieve mother’s childbirth stress, to enhance fathers’ accompany efficacy and mother’s childbirth self-efficacy, to enhance couples care-intimate bond. In general, the result of this study could offer healthcare providers some references to future expectant fathers’ accompanying birth education program, as well as both physical and psychological support for expectant fathers and mothers. It could help them adopt a positive attitude toward the challenge of labor, and gain a more enjoyable childbirth experience.
