Résumé :
The Special Article in this issue of Medical Problems of Performing Artists has the potential to usher in a new era in improving the lives of musicians (and potentially other performing artists) around the world. The Health Promotion in Schools of Music conference that was held in Texas in the fall of 2004 brought together a rich mixture of music and performing arts medicine professionals. Stimulated by the new National Association of Schools of Music accreditation standard that requires undergraduate music students to receive instruction in injury prevention and occupational health promotion, participants in the conference worked diligently for 3 days to discuss what we know, what we don't know, and how to approach the vital yet immensely complex issue of health promotion and injury prevention for college-level music students. While the recommendations in the Special Article are intentionally broad and allow each school to develop its own program, they are based on a true state of the art analysis of the field.

Résumé :
The article studies the development of guitar art in Ukraine at the beginning of the XXIst century. This topic is virtually not researched in domestic musicology. All the research is primarily devoted to pan-European trends or regional school. For the first time, this study analyzes various aspects of the activity of the Guitarists Association of the NUMU (National All-Ukrainian Music Union) presenting historical material on the formation of guitar art in Ukraine, and information on outstanding musicians of the past. Factual material on the history of the National All-Ukrainian Music Union and the Association of Guitarists as its creative center has been gathered. The article traces the development of the guitar movement in Ukraine at the beginning of the new century from the First All-Ukrainian Festival-Competition of Guitar Art of Valery Petrenko to the presentday events. It emphasizes ways of development of competitive activity, the case of Oleg Stefaniuk Open Competition of Music Masters (2019), online competitions of performers "Guitar Play" and competition "Compoguitar". The only specialized magazine Guitar in Ukraine, published regularly since 2008, facilitates the promotion of the guitar art. Hence, the active and diverse activities of Guitarists Association of the NUMU have significantly contributed to the development of Ukrainian guitar art in the performing and academic-pedagogical aspect.

Résumé :
Background: The Federation of Musical Societies of the Valencian Community (FSMCV) is a democratic association created 50 years ago, which represents and supports the 550 associations that make it up, with the aim of promoting, disseminating and teaching music. It promotes associationism and provides society with a way of developing cultural articulation, mainly developing its activities within the Valencian Community, although its national and international activity is very remarkable. Methodology: This article based on a prospective study using a qualitative methodology analyzes one of the proposals made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the FSMCV through the use and application of the collaborative creation system Soundcool where more than 100 students from music schools in the Valencian Community played with their own mobile devices. In order to obtain the results of this study: unstructured interviews; focus group; articipant observation and analysis of the audiovisual material collected through the different previous preparation meetings were taken into account, as well as the product of the final perforation collected by the researchers. Main Findings: The results obtained with the introduction of creative elements and strategies through new digital tools such as Soundcool, allow new spaces in the teaching of music students further integrating contemporary languages and creativity, as well as promoting their digital competence. Implications: Also with this type of proposals through the FSMCV, we reinforce the creative commitment through the production of sound by students of music schools.

Résumé :
Financial dependence of singing societies in the state of Serbia and Kingdom of Yugoslavia is particularly analyzed in the paper, with a view to pointing to problems which hindered the advancement of music culture in the civil society. As other similar institutions of civic type, choirs did not have at their disposal sufficient financial, social and symbolic capital independent of the state, so they did not possess the power to influence on the government authorities. Although the period between World Wars brought evident improvement in the state treatment of music institutions, it could not be interpreted as a fundamental shift. The treatment of the Yugoslav singing union (Juznoslovenski pevacki savez), which fought for promotion of music culture in the Yugoslav society, is particularly indicative. This largest music organization in the country, fostering ideology of integral Yugoslavism, strived to contribute to ethnic and social cohesion of different regions through singing. In its plans for improving singing practice this organization exhibited a clear vision for activism in favor of the nation and state, but the state authorities did not know how or did not desire to make use of it. Certain information suggests indolent and at times negative, discouraging attitude of authorities towards different ways of improvement of music practice, both art and society wise, which opens a new horizon for future studies and for better comprehension of contemporary problems as well.

Résumé :
In this article we study forms and methods used to popularize western classical music in a South Korean TV series. The main subject of analysis is the TV series Beethoven Virus (2008) devoted to a symphony orchestra in a fictional South Korean city. The main purpose of this TV series is the promotion of classical music, and the author of the article comes to the conclusion that its popularity among Korean audience is explained by its engaging, convincing artistic methods with respect to national cultural specificities, which were used to show the working environment of professional musicians. The series reveals real problems of modern Korean musical culture: “crisis of overproduction” of academic musicians; discrimination of graduates of South Korean musical educational institutions; prejudice that classical music is only for the rich. The author emphasizes that immersion into the atmosphere of professional musical life allows the viewers to apprehend the educational value of the TV series more clearly. Beethoven Virus demonstrates traditional Korean attitude towards European classical music determined by the Confucian roots; and at the same time, it depicts changes in the modern culture conditioned by gradual departure from traditional values. The two main characters — the young and the old conductors — symbolize the old and the new in the Korean musical culture. They interact in a traditional eastern way: the new spirit does not openly conflict with the established convention, but sprouts from it. The author suggests that the music is explained in the film through emotional associations which let the viewers fully perceive the musical idea. The author believes that this method, compared to other ways widespread in the West, corresponds to the nature of the specific sensation of European classical music associated with Confucian cultural roots. An opinion is expressed that methods of music education used in Beethoven Virus were chosen in accordance to the South Korean serial genre traditions: leitmotivs in the soundtrack and gesture clichés are of particular significance here. The author suggests that the South Korean experience of promoting musical classics by means of serial films can be used abroad — given that the differences in mentality and realities of musical life are taken into account.

Résumé :
A forgotten figure of the new Hungarian musical movement of the 1910s, Géza Vilmos Zágon (1889–1918) was a talented composer, pianist and music writer. He belonged among those young composers who turned toward French culture instead of the traditional German orientation and searched for new inspiration in Paris. He was, at the same time, one of the few to be personally acquainted with leading personalities of the city’s musical life: letters by Claude Debussy, Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi, Louis Laloy, Émile Vuillermoz and Albert Zunz Mathot have survived in his legacy. During his stay in France between 1912 and 1914, he acted as the representant of the former UMZE (Új Magyar Zene Egyesület, New Hungarian Music Association), and did not only bring attention to himself as a performer of his own works, but was also instrumental in promoting those by Bartók and Kodály. In the present study, I seek to demonstrate that Zágon served as an important liaison for Bartók’s circle with some of the most influential groups of French avant-garde, the Société Musicale Indépendante, as well as Calvocoressi. In an effort to document these important relationships as well as Zágon’s activity, I publish a selection of his correspondence in original language, with French translation provided where appropriate.

Résumé :
Driven by the solidarity movements following the “refugee crisis” of 2015, the Brussels-based non-profit organization Muziekpublique, specialized in the promotion of so-called “world music”, initiated the Refugees for Refugees project. This album and performance tour featured traditional musicians who had found asylum in Belgium and had artistic, political, and social goals. In comparison to the other projects conducted by the organization, each step of the project benefited from exceptional coverage and financial support. At the same time, the association and the musicians were facing administrative, musical, and ethical problems they had never encountered before. Three years after its creation, the band Refugees for Refugees is still touring the Belgian and international scenes and is going to release a new album, following the will of all actors to go on with the project and demonstrating the important social mobilization it aroused. Through this case study, we aim at questioning the complexity of elaborating a project staging a common identity of “refugees” while valuing their diversity; understanding the reasons for the exceptional success the project has encountered; and determining to what extent and at what level it helped—or not—the musicians to rebuild their lives in Belgium.

Résumé :
The process of organizing musical life in modern Italy is analyzed through the prism of new management approaches aimed at the deployment of Italian musical projects in the general sociocultural space. The issues of management and marketing in today's musical life, which are a significant component in the creation of musical projects, are outlined. The main principles of new types of marketing in the context of the promotion of musical projects in Italy are characterized - event, empirical and territorial. The functioning of the national brand project — the Arena di Verona Opera Festival, the hundredth season of which took place in 2023 on the stage of the Roman Amphitheater Arena, is highlighted. The role of the "Arena di Verona" Foundation in the organization of the opera festival has been determined. Creative advertising measures are considered, thanks to which the project is popularized as an artistic phenomenon among the public. It was found that Italian festival marketing in modern musical life functions thanks to the cooperation of state, financial institutions, private business sector, associations and foundations. The specifics of the promotion of Italian music projects are revealed, which includes analysis, planning, implementation of a massscale event with the help of creativity in advertising, constant technological updating. The dependence of the success of musical projects on the exclusive decisions of the organizers, innovative technologies used in scenery, lighting, stage design, etc. is substantiated. The high artistic component of Italian music projects, which attract more fans, always take place in a certain place and time, strengthen the brand of the territory and make the region attractive both for the local population and for tourists, has been identified. It has been proven that the main goal of organizing musical life in modern Italy, working for a high professional result, is to show the world the historical and artistic sights of Italian cities and preserve Italian musical projects as a national cultural brand for future generations.

Résumé :
BackgroundSelf-management refers to an individual’s abilities and behavior to maintain and improve their own well-being and monitor and control the physical and psychosocial reactions related to their condition to maintain a satisfactory quality of life [1,2]. Self-management is an essential part of treatment alongside medical care. Peer support is based on sharing of information and experiential knowledge among persons living with the same condition. Peer support is seen more and more important in healthcare, and it has been used to improve overall health and promote health behavior and self-management. [3].ObjectivesTo promote the health and well-being of those living with rheumatic and/or musculoskeletal diseases, and to support their ability to cope with illness through peer-led “Reumatroppi” group activity. The aim of the group activity is to help participants notice things that increase well-being and health in their everyday lives and turn their thoughts to positive things.MethodsThe Finnish Rheumatism Association trains volunteers to become ”Reumatroppi” group instructors. Trained volunteers set up a group and receive a written material consisting of thirty nonmedical health-related topics that are scientifically studied and relevant in management of rheumatic and/or musculoskeletal diseases. Topics include, for instance, resistance exercise, cardiovascular health, nutrition, recovery and rest. In addition, topics such as literature, music, nature, and creativity are included to broaden the view of self-management. The group meets regularly to discuss varying topics and share their experiences and thoughts. In addition, the group does joyous tasks together both indoors and outdoors. A task related to the topic is also given at home before next meeting. Self-report questionnaires with quantitative and qualitative questions are administered to the participants at the end of the group.ResultsIn 2021-2022, 86% of participants (n=80) reported paying more attention to their health behaviors (incl. physical activity, nutrition, rest). Additionally, 91% of the participants stated that they had tried to improve their own well-being and health in their everyday lives. 76% of participants had reduced sitting and sedentary time. It is also noteworthy that 80% of the participants reported better mood, and 81% had experienced more enthusiasm in their everyday lives. In addition, 71% of the participants reported that they had been (physically) more active and found more arts in their lives during the group. 81% of the participants had also found new friends in the group.ConclusionPeer-led “Reumatroppi” group activity has been able to raise the awareness for self-management among those living with rheumatic and/or musculoskeletal disease. The participants have paid more attention to their health behavior and found new resources that promote their overall well-being.References[1]Barlow, J. et al. 2002. Résumé :
The present paper deals with the leading trends in the development of Russian jazz art. The authors substantiate high productivity of the “thaw” era in Russian art leading to the emancipation of society, the expansion of the range of cultural communication and formation of the auto-image of Russian jazz. The research explores refraction of jazz aesthetics in stylistics as a youth subculture with its own slang, musical preferences and behavioral models. While the negative consequence of the promotion of jazz as a musical reference point for representatives of this youth subculture was the narrowing and stereotyping of listeners' expectations, the emergence of new artistic types, themes and images that do not lose their significance at the turn of the 21 century came to be the positive side of the popularity of jazz among young people. The paper reveals how Moscow jazz of the 1950s and 1960s entered a period of active development of jazz improvisation techniques, as well as embraced the experience of foreign collectives. Basing on the study of bibliographic sources and musicological literature, the authors identify the leading trends of the Moscow jazz school of the given period: transformation of ensemble interaction strategies, intellectualization of the perception of jazz music, institutionalization of jazz in Russian musical culture. The paper specified socio-cultural factors that determined the leading role of the Moscow jazz school in the period of the 1950s and 1960s in the creation of youth clubs, amateur associations and jazz study centers, jazz festivals, the appearance of the first professional educational institutions of the pop-jazz profile.

The ink produced takes longer to dry.Carving is a fusion of life, history, culture, and creation. The production of Luohsi ink stone started around the same time when culture of Chinese characters circulated into Taiwan. Education systems and academies for classical learning are established and then develops into the imperial examination system. Later, the imperial examination system was abolished. The education system progressed and new kinds of stationary are invented. Tools for calligraphy, writing brush, ink, paper, and ink stone, become teaching tools for calligraphy.Calligraphy curricula designed according to government education policy does not exist anymore. Now the tools of calligraphy, writing brush, ink, paper, and ink stone, are left only for calligraphic art creation. This thesis promotes the cultural Luohsi ink stone. It has incorporated cultural calligraphy art and poetry as a crucial artistic handicraft in the Ink stone Industry through creative new strategies of TRIZ.The creative principle of TRIZ is incorporated into ink stone carving. It makes ink stone become artistic handicraft, to be included in the category of cultural wealth and in part of culture industry.

Abstract This study was to investigate the initial motivation for new immigrants to participate in volunteer community service and the force driving them to do continuous service. In this study, the researcher chose new immigrant volunteers of Corporation Aggregate Taichung City Joy Culture Promotion Association as the main object of study and adapted qualitative research in depth semi-structured interviews and documents collection and analysis as the main research methods. Meanwhile, from the viewpoints of new immigrant volunteers, the researcher explored their roles as volunteers in the association, and the difficulties they encountered during service. As the conclusion of the study, the researcher would collect the suggestions proposed by the new immigrant volunteers for the related government organizations on voluntary service issues. The study found that the majority of new immigrants volunteers will regard the association as their "own maiden" and have no particular requirements about their volunteers’ work. They just feel very happy very satisfied at the time of service. But they hope that the problems and difficulties encountered in the process can be resolved in a timely manner as well as the provision of more learning activities and training courses should be financed by the authority. In addition to the promotion of their professional knowledge, skills and service quality of new immigrants volunteers, they expect to acquire skills at the same time to improve the family economy. If the motive of the new immigrants volunteers in the service process can meet with their expectation, it will drive them to continue to provide maximum power services. Human being is the most valuable treasure of an organization. To use the human resources of volunteers effectively, the leaders must be able to understand each member involved in the different motivations and personality traits, and make different plans according to the personality features of the volunteers to provide better service quality and efficiency.

« The Career of Clifford Demarest (1874-1946) : Organist, Social Advocate, and Educator ». Master's thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.24941.

Résumé :
abstract: As an organist, church musician, and educator, Clifford Demarest (1874-1946) was a prominent figure in New York during the first half of the twentieth century. However, prior to this thesis, Demarest's place within the history of American music, like that of many of his contemporaries, was all but neglected. This research reveals Clifford Demarest as an influential figure in American musical history from around 1900 to his retirement in 1937. Led by contemporary accounts, I trace Demarest's musical influence through his three musical careers: professional organist, church musician, and educator. As a prominent figure in the fledgling American Guild of Organists, Demarest was dedicated to the unification of its members and the artistic legitimacy of the organist profession. As the organist and choir director of the Church of the Messiah, later the Community Church of New York (1911-1946, inclusive), Demarest played an integral part in the liberal atmosphere fostered by the congregation's minister, John Haynes Holmes (1879-1964). Together Holmes and Demarest directly influenced the nascent National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and supported luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. Influential figures such as Langston Hughes (1902-1967), Augustus Granville Dill (1881-1956), Egbert Ethelred Brown (1875-1956), and Countee Cullen (1903-1946) were inspired by the liberal environment in the Church of the Messiah; however, prior to this research, their connections to the church were unexplored. As the music supervisor of Tenafly High School and later, for the state of New Jersey, Demarest influenced countless students through his passion for music. His compositions for student orchestras are among the earliest to elevate the artistic standards of school music ensembles during the first four decades of the twentieth century. Archival sources such as church records, letters, and newspaper editorials, are synthesized with current research to characterize Demarest's place in these three professional orbits of the early twentieth century. His story also represents those of countless other working musicians from his era that have been forgotten. Therefore, this research opens an important new research field – a window into the dynamic world of the American organist.

Résumé :
Musicians such as Désormière, Schaeffer, Poulenc, and Messiaen explored new ways to destabilize or challenge the meanings Vichy sought to inscribe in culture, or to open up the message of iconic works in order to disrupt the regime’s increasingly compromised national cultural representations. To perceive this, it has been necessary to examine the evolving associations of musical styles as well as the material dimensions of performance, for they were both central components of the manner in which meaning was produced, particularly in the midst of politicized attempts to control it. For the Resistance, music thus magnified the regime’s evolving collaborationist goals and cultural tactics—its eventual quest to court the Germans by promoting cooperation in all areas. According to Resistance intellectuals, music could and did contribute both to a growing awareness of political realities and to the development of new cultural tactics within its ever-growing repertoire of symbolic contestation.

Résumé :
This chapter examines Wilder's compositional maturity in the 1950s. From the late 1940s through the 1950s, Wilder pursued a long-held goal with growing confidence and perseverance. Having made his name as a songwriter-arranger, he now aspired to become more of a “composer.” He never abandoned the popular song but he found himself drawn more and more to the sounds and artistic sensibilities of the theater, opera house, and concert hall. Wilder's turn toward concert music was inspired, in his mind, by his association and friendship with his Eastman confrère John Barrows. Barrows took on a role for Wilder's concert music that Mitch Miller had once played for Wilder's experience in the popular realm: promoting him, helping him find opportunities, and offering boundless encouragement. Over the decades of their friendship, Wilder would write not only because of Barrows but also for him, as a soloist and in chamber groups.

Résumé :
At the turn of the 2020s, music is largely distributed and consumed via streaming services. This new »moment« in recorded music has attracted a lot of attention from scholars, with the aim of identifying the nature of transformations that are occurring at an economic and/or cultural level. This chapter critically assesses scholarly analyses of music production, distribution, and consumption in the age of streaming services. We note that accounts tend to work with specific assumptions underpinning the association between culture and technology, in particular in relation to the democratization of access. We argue in this chapter that music streaming services become a leitmotiv to anchor discourses about what music should ideally be, thus reproducing narratives that predate the emergence of music streaming.

Résumé :
Abstract This chapter reviews the extant literature on the relationship between representations of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in media and NSSI engagement. It places this discussion within the context of the cognitive-emotional model of NSSI and begins by looking at the risk and protective factors of exposure to NSSI content in traditional forms of media, including films, television, news, music, and print novels and comics. Consistent with the Werther and Papageno effects, it summarizes media depictions of NSSI as increasing or decreasing the likelihood someone will experience NSSI urges, behaviors, and stigma. It then discusses how framing of NSSI matters in terms of perpetuating stigma and unhelpful narratives or promoting new and more helpful narratives, highlighting its bidirectional association with cultural narratives and public perceptions of the behavior. It references guidelines for responsibly depicting NSSI in media and then focuses on challenges, recommendations, and future considerations related to researching NSSI and media. Finally, it discusses ethical concerns and clinical implications. Key takeaways include: the way in which NSSI is represented in media may increase or decrease the risk for NSSI, although research is limited and causal relationships cannot be inferred; use of trigger warnings in media to warn audiences of potentially disturbing content related to NSSI may be ineffective or problematic; referencing NSSI media guidelines as flexible and aspirational “principles of conduct” may increase their uptake among media professionals; cinematherapy and bibliotherapy using exemplar NSSI portrayals may help individuals self-reflect on their own NSSI from a safe distance and consider alternative coping behaviors.

Résumé :
Abstract The 1950s was a unique period of reform that gave jazz musicians new opportunities to build an active jazz scene, though not without serious challenges. Chapter 2 develops the idea of association, a collaborative music-making that relies on the institution’s support and therefore is tied to the multiple missions of incarceration. Association, the act of coming together for a common purpose, is inherent to music anywhere. But the folkloric notions of prison music as an individual endeavor obscured the prolific jazz practices that dominated Angola’s musical activity in the 1950s. This chapter reveals how jazz depended on and supported prisoner associations that flourished during a decade of progressive reform. The focus on jazz, prisoner-run media and the shift to a modern prison building show how collective activity can secure small individual freedoms. The chapter follows the rise and fall of the Cavaliers, the Rhythm Makers, the All-Stars, and the Nic Nacs.

Abstract In the late 1980s the British Paediatric Association set up a multidisciplinary working group chaired by David Hall to review routine health checks for young children. The report of this working party was published as a book in 1989. Health for all Children is now in its fourth edition and is the definitive text on these issues (Hall and Elliman 2003). Each new edition has seen a shift from a medical model of screening for disorders to an approach including health promotion, primary prevention, and active intervention for children at risk, whether for medical or social reasons. The fourth edition encompasses services to school age children, updating the Health needs of school aged children report (Polnay 1995).

AbstractThe Bureau of Products and Standards (BPS) is a key component of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). It supports GGOS in its goal to provide consistent geodetic products needed to monitor, map, and understand changes in the Earth’s shape, rotation, and gravity field. In its present structure, the two Committees “Earth System Modeling” and “Essential Geodetic Variables” as well as the Working Group “Towards a consistent set of parameters for the definition of a new Geodetic Reference System (GRS)” are associated to the BPS. This paper presents the structure and role of the BPS and it highlights some of the recent activities. A major focus is on the classification and description of geodetic products and their representation at the renewed GGOS website (www.ggos.org). This website serves as an “entrance door” to geodetic products to satisfy different user needs and communities (e.g., geodesists, geophysicists, other geosciences and further customers) in order to make geodesy more visible to other disciplines and to society.

Abstract Physicians and their professional societies have played an important but often troubling role in the governance of immunization in America. Throughout the 20th century, physician professional organizations often derailed attempts to build a functional American public health system. If such a system had been created, it could have delivered free vaccines and effective health promotion to the public. More recently, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have called for more coercive mandatory vaccination policies. America’s immunization governance has an unfortunate history of seeking to punish rather than provide, and the political activities of physicians have been a significant driver of that dynamic.

Résumé :
Abstract Imagine a group of fourth graders listening to Gustav Holst’s The Planets. They listen intently, contemplate, discuss in detail how the music represents the motion of the planets; and then the teacher poses the question to them: “How could we make a sound sculpture that would represent the orbital value of each planet?” In this chapter, we seek to uncover the issues and research related to teaching other subjects, like this science lesson, through music. In order to do so, we begin by offering an overview of historical, social/cultural, and theoretical perspectives. We then address the literature on classroom teachers and arts integration, including a discussion outlining the various ways teachers teach other subjects through music. A review of major studies in this area follows, and the chapter concludes with reflections and conclusions based on the research. In writing this chapter, we recognized that this topic brings with it considerable debate, and we embraced the controversies with interest and rigor. Arts education in the United States is at a dynamic crossroads. For the past few decades music, visual art, drama, and dance have usually been taught as separate subjects in school, if they were taught at all (see Leonhard, 1991; National Endowment for the Arts [NEA], 1988). Of all the arts, music is the one most likely to be taught by a specialist teacher trained to teach that subject. This discipline-based model of music and arts education is fundamental to the education of children, giving them key skills and understandings through the sequential development of the tools needed to receive a basic education in each art form. A vision for student accomplishment in these disciplines is outlined in the National Standards for Arts Education (1994). Included in these standards is a call for the promotion of arts as a medium for integrating learning across the curriculum within state and local planning efforts.

Résumé :
Abstract Samuel Hope’s essay elsewhere in this Handbook (chap. 1) provides a useful map of the territory that organizations generally refer to as “policy.” In it, Hope explores a variety of contexts, frameworks, and variables that define the systems of decision making operating in our society impinging on education. Along the way, he points to a number of values, belief systems, interests, and operational structures that shape policy perspectives and are thus influential in shaping policy at “street level.” This chapter takes up the discussion where Hope leaves off. I am interested here in tightening his focus, in narrowing the broad perspective he has outlined, by looking at four core points of the policy process that are essential to association life, and to one association in particular: MENC-The National Association for Music Education. Along the way, I want to give special attention to two factors: (1) the research dimension that informs each of the four policy areas; and (2) how policy making in a particular organization is established, influenced, and evaluated. Overall, the thread tying these elements together is the importance of research to the policy process.

Résumé :
Abstract In the first edition of the Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, Donald Casey (1992) used the broad term “descriptive research” to include common forms of qualitative inquiry. In the introduction to his chapter, Casey said: “Despite some speculation to the contrary, descriptive research should by no means be conceived as any less vigorous, worthwhile, or useful than other research modes” (p. 115). Although battles over legitimacy continue, qualitative researchers today face less “speculation to the contrary.” Funding agencies, leading journals, and book publishers give qualitative studies an increasingly high profile. Professional organizations, such as the American Educational Research Association, have institutionalized qualitative approaches as a viable alternative to large-sample, statistical studies, and research universities now provide expanded training in qualitative methods. Together with these opportunities, the number of qualitative researchers has multiplied. Their ranks have grown so quickly over the past decade that it is difficult to find a more prominent trend in the field of educational research. Who and what have contributed to this trend are among the questions raised in this chapter.

The music industry has always been complex and competitive. Nowadays, combining different genres has become a common practice to promote new music and reach new audiences. Given the diversity of combinations between all genres, predictive and descriptive analyses are very challenging. Here, our goal is to mine frequent and exceptional patterns in music collaborations that have achieved success in both global and regional markets. We use the Apriori algorithm to mine genre patterns and association rules that reveal how music genres combine with each other in each market. The results show significant differences in the behavior of each market and a strong influence of the regional factor on musical success. In addition, we are able to use such patterns to identify and recommend promising genre combinations for such markets through the association rules.

Résumé :
From the original “steam trumpet” built for locomotives in 1832 by the Leicester and Swannington Railway to modern air-pressure horns, train warning signals have not changed significantly in nearly 200 years. The effectiveness of train warning signals has been of particular concern for trespassers listening to music with headphones. The authors have conducted research as part of a Federal Railroad Administration program to design and assess the effectiveness of candidate new emergency warning signal (EWS) sounds. This paper summarizes a literature review to understand the needs for a new EWS sound and principles of audible signal detection. Acoustic measurements were conducted of headphones to understand in-ear music levels and active and passive sound attenuation. Candidate EWS sounds were developed with a goal of maintaining the identification of a train approaching and increasing the sense of urgency and response time for trespassers to vacate the tracks. Testing of candidate EWS sounds was conducted in an audio booth and on-board a moving locomotive. The research results have shown that a new EWS sound can maintain the association of a train approaching, increase the sense of urgency, reduce the reaction time for trespassers to vacate the tracks and improve safety on railroad corridors.

The main European policy for rural areas is the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Regarding the involvement of local communities, CAP, through the LEADER program, contributes to the promotion of a community-led local development strategy, supporting development projects initiated at the local level by Local Action Groups. For good functioning and achieving high efficiency, LAGs resort to the implementation of participative management in the organization. In the presented work, we propose to analyze the importance of participative management within an organization of this type – LAG “Eremia Grigorescu 1863” Galati and the contribution to the establishment of new businesses, the promotion of tourism, the creation of jobs, which lead to the sustainable development of rural economy in the South-East Region of Romania. The involvement of the LAG staff in the decision-making process led to the enrichment of the level of culture and professional training of the employees, facilitating the achievement of remarkable results in terms of the association. Sport event organizer as a blended learning course was developed in "E-learning for social partners" project. This project aimed to provide the possibility to study online to professional athletes. The project was financed from the Social European Fund and was implemented by the Professional and Amateur Footballers Association (AFAN) in partnership with National Trade Union Block (BNS) and Escola Professional Cristovao Colombo (EPCC) from Portugal In the project were developed 10 different courses - all of them aiming to facilitate the achievements of AFAN and BNS members - mainly by using an online learning platform One of the courses developed into the project was Sport Events Organizer, and I was the tutor. In this role I designed the course architecture, with 6 learning modules in blended learning type - online and face-to-face. The blended organization of the course was imposed by the specifically modules: Sport Event 1. Ideation, 2. Planning, 3. Preparation, 4. Promotion, 5. Coordinating and 6. Evaluation. I considered that the 5th module must be constructed as effectively involving the learners into a specific activity and they must be present and implied. Each module lasts one week starting on Monday until Friday. On Saturday and Sunday there were no more new assignments. The online learning platform was Moodle type and I used specific online tools: activity guides, learning resources (written materials e-courses, embedded and different reference sources), discussion forums, quizzes, case study, group work, glossary creation. The activity started in November 2012 and was finalized in April 2013

Résumé :
With the popularity and spread of social media, more and more social software is helping to bring people closer to each other [1]. It is increasingly easy for adolescents to get other people's updates from social media, including celebrities, internet celebrities and peers [2]. Also adolescence is a time when the brain undergoes many structural and functional changes, so it is likely that the part of the social brain responsible for regulating imitation is still maturing throughout adolescence, which may lead to more pronounced imitative behaviour [3]. In addition, adolescents gain popularity, status and attractiveness through imitation of their idols or among their peers [4]. Therefore, making good use of the prevalent behaviours that social media has created in society has the potential to provide better behavioural interventions for the adolescent population [5], helping to shape better behavioural habits in adolescents, improving the current trend of younger disease and potentially reducing the likelihood of preventable health problems. The aim of this study was to analyse how popular behavioural mimicry among adolescents can be used to promote the activation of their health behaviours. We asked two questions: 1. the extent to which imitation behaviours activate adolescents' health behaviours; 2. measuring the impact of knowledge, skills and beliefs involved in the activation of behavioural imitation on adolescents' health maintenance and disease prevention.A questionnaire was used to enumerate the population groups that have the greatest influence on adolescents as the test sample in this study. 100 participants took part in the questionnaire, including 50 participants from mainland China and 50 participants from Hong Kong, whose mean age was 16 ± 3 years. After administering the questionnaire, 50 of these participants, who were randomly and equally divided into 10 groups of 5 participants each, were surveyed using the Activation Inventory (PAM) to measure the current level of knowledge, skills and beliefs involved in the activation of the adolescent population to maintain health and prevent disease, and then measured again using the PAM 30 and 60 days after the adolescents were exposed to the imitated subjects. The adolescent group itself was not highly aware of healthy behaviours and the effectiveness of positive health behaviour imitation in changing health behaviours and outcomes was somewhat proven when they were exposed to positive health behaviours of imitators for 30 days. However, 60 days after participants were exposed to imitations of healthy behaviours, although the imitations were still effective in maintaining healthy behaviours, the 60-day activation of healthy behaviours produced some decline compared to the first 30 days of outcomes. Therefore, in the future, more research should be conducted on the preferences and needs of adolescent groups to identify the social factors and groups that best trigger imitation among adolescents, and to promote positive health behaviours among adolescents by developing mobile applications that are more in line with adolescents' expectations to trigger trends, create widespread social discussion and be present in their daily conversations.References1.Moira Burke and Robert E. Résumé :
This paper seeks to examine the implication of open skies in ASEAN on the airport development strategy in Malaysia. "Open Skies," in general, refers to the liberalization of aviation markets that can be pursued on a bilateral, regional, or multilateral basis. The findings show that although Malaysia has invested substantially in overall infrastructure development, including airports, other member countries within ASEAN, notably Singapore and Thailand, have also followed a similar investment-intensive strategy to develop their international airports into airport hubs. The dream to turn Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) into a regional hub requires Malaysia to undertake several measures to overcome the competitive pressures from neighboring hubs. This includes joining a strategic global alliance group to improve the traffic feed of the national carrier. It will also require the government to accelerate the construction of the new Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) at KLIA. The strategy to build a cargo hub at Senai should be reviewed while the promotion of tourism, especially to non-ASEAN countries has to focus on a distinctive product appeal that will enable the country to differentiate its tourism products from those of regional competitors. This paper was prepared for the Latin America/Caribbean and Asia/Pacific Economics and Business Association (LAEBA)'s 4th Annual Meeting held in Lima, Peru, on June 17th. 2008.
