Résumé :
It all began in a railway carriage. Two businessmen, travelling to the Kingston Assizes in Surrey, nodded to each other as strangers do, but did not strike up a conversation. They were expert witnesses appearing for different sides in the Croydon Water Question; a legal test case that boiled down to who owned the undergroundwaters of London (Mather 2008: 83–4). Joseph Prestwich (Figure 1a), the older by 11 years, represented the water suppliers. As the train rattled along under full steam he would have seen landmarks from his pioneering geology of the London Basin. But water was not his business. His family ran a profitable wine importers. Geology, however, was his passion.

Résumé :
In recent years, Named Data Networking (NDN) has been one of the future internet network architectures by proposing it as a substitute for existing IP networks. NDN assigns addresses/names to data or content, whereas IP assigns addresses to devices. NDN router has a Content Store (CS) component to store requested packets and reducing the time for duplicate content requests. As network architecture, NDN uses several algorithms and strategies in the process. This paper will specifically discuss the forwarding and routing algorithm. Forwarding mechanisms play a significant role in packet delivery on the NDN system. Even though routing was not the main component of the NDN system, the routing mechanism and Routing Information Base remain important, considering Forwarding Information Base was generated after Routing Information Base was generated. Routing has significant control, whereas forwarding can give finer control over the delivery path. Considering the previous statement, the combination of routing and forwarding strategy must be considered to optimize the performance of the packet delivery system on NDN. In addition to getting information about the entire network, centralized routing, and adaptive networking are needed to distribute all network traffic fairly. The challenges and opportunities can also be a reference and a guideline for future Adaptive NDN research.

Résumé :
The Online Student Connectedness Survey (OSCS) was introduced to the academic community in 2012 as an instrument designed to measure feelings of connectedness between students participating in online degree and certification programs. The purpose of this study was to examine data from the instrument for initial evidence of validity and reliability and to establish a nomological network between the OSCS and similar instruments utilized in the field. The study utilized sequential exploratory factor analysis- confirmatory factor analysis (EFA-CFA) and correlational analysis to assess results of the data. Students enrolled in online courses at higher education institutions located in the United States served as the sample for this study. Three instruments were used during the study. The OSCS was administered first so that the factor structure could be examined for factor validity. Once confirmed, the Classroom Community Scale (CCS) and the Community of Inquiry Scale (COI) served as the instruments to examine nomological validity through correlational analysis of data. This study provided evidence of factor validity and reliability for data from the OSCS. After the initial EFA-CFA, the four-factor structure held, and 16 of the 25 original items remained for nomological testing. Statistically significant correlations were demonstrated between factors contained in the OSCS, CCS, and COI, providing further evidence of construct validity. These results indicate that for the sample used in this study, the OSCS provides data that are valid and reliable for assessing feelings of connection between participants in online courses at institutions of higher learning.

Résumé :
Aneurysm rupture with subarachnoid haemorrhage is the most devastating complication of intracerebral aneurysms. Grading the severity of the haemorrhage assists with prognostication and assists with decision-making for patient management. Both radiological and clinical grading systems can be predictive of outcomes following subarachnoid haemorrhage. The pathophysiology of, and risk factors for, intracerebral aneurysm formation, growth, and rupture are complicated and poorly understood. In order to make an informed judgement about which patients to treat, it is important to balance the natural history of the condition against each patient’s risks of treatment. Numerous risk factors for aneurysm rupture have been identified, and this quantification of risk continues to be refined. Cerebral vasospasm is a common complication after subarachnoid haemorrhage. The pathological mechanisms of vasospasm involve numerous changes acting in concert to result in ischaemic neurological deficits. Clinical and radiological monitoring allows early detection and treatment to prevent ischaemic neurological deficits.

Résumé :
Abstract Income inequality has increased dramatically in the United States, yet public support for redistribution has not. The authors of this chapter theorize that mistaken beliefs about income inequality contribute to citizens’ lack of demand for greater redistribution, and that correcting these beliefs can help citizens connect their value for greater equality to their preferences for redistribution. To test their theory, they conduct a survey that measures citizens’ beliefs about income inequality and then randomly assigns them to receive factual or partisan information before expressing their support for redistributive policies. The survey found that citizens believe that income is distributed much more equitably than it actually is and that, in the absence of information, their preferences for redistribution are unrelated to whether or not they value greater equality. When citizens receive accurate information about income inequality, however, they connect their value for greater equality to their preferences for redistribution, even when their partisan allegiances recommend otherwise.

Résumé :
At the University of Colorado Boulder (CU), a research-based undergraduate mentoring program is now in its second year of implementation. The program, Your Own Undergraduate Research Experience (YOU’RE@CU) has three main goals: improve the retention rate of diverse groups in undergraduate engineering, build undergraduate interest in engineering research, and prepare graduate students to take on leadership roles in either academia or industry-based research careers. In YOU’RE@CU, undergraduate students are paired with a graduate mentor and work in the graduate student’s lab several hours a week. Undergraduate mentees enroll in a one-credit seminar course focusing on research and graduate school opportunities, and are assessed via pre- and post-surveys to gauge their excitement and interest in engineering. The undergraduates also respond to biweekly qualitative reflective questions while participating in the program. Graduate mentors complete several reflective questions about their experiences and are required to complete pre- and post-assessments. Adopting a person-centered, case study approach, this paper focuses on two telling examples of research-based mentoring relationships in the YOU’RE@CU program. Given identical mentor training through YOU’RE@CU, two graduate students start the Spring 2012 semester by meeting with their mentees to launch a research project. By examining application, pre-survey, reflective questions, and post-survey responses from these four participants, the differences in the trajectory of the two paired mentoring relationships can be clearly seen over the course of one semester. This close examination of two disparate mentoring relationships is instructive in understanding the subtle details that create either a positive learning environment or an uncomfortable lab situation for young engineers, and assists program administrators in making improvements in subsequent years.

Résumé :
Abstract Safety on the rig floor must be addressed habitually to avoid tragic fatalities and environmental crises. The objectives of this study were: (1) creating an engineer's system approach named "" to achieve a superior drilling rig safety performance by changing the Health Safety and Environment (HSE) culture and worksite behavior, (2) ensuring proper engagement and commitment of the workforce from the top to the bottom of the hierarchy and (3) to provide a tool that can be utilized on any rig floor. This tool assists in evaluating the risk from three different perspectives: People, Equipment, and Process (PEP). The research covered surveys of offshore oil companies in the Middle East. A total of 16 sites, which included four jack-ups, eight island rigs, and four service areas (mud and cementing units). The feedbacks from the surveys were used to create a risk model and a risk assessment tool, which evaluates the risk factor of hazards resulting from the interaction between people and equipment. Based on the risk factor value and each survey feedback, an episode is created to deliver a very attractive and methodical safety message for the rig-floor workforce. The crew's safety performance has been monitored on a monthly basis to test the impact on the company's’ HSE performance. The results show that had a significant positive impact. A total of 335 days of an injury-free environment was achieved in 2018 while delivering several wells with a lateral length of 25,000 feet in a total of 66 days. Additionally, the number of incidents was reduced by 85% by the end of 2018. The survey data also show insightful analysis: 50% of the incidents are due to lack of situational awareness; the rig floor equipment that exhibits the highest risk are top drive, iron roughneck, manual tongs, air wench, and lifting gears. The humane factors that indicate the highest risk on the rig floor are people's attitude, awareness, communication, driller's influence, and green hands. The identified opportunity areas of major concern are the Red zone, functional Iron-Roughneck, and regular equipment maintenance. The six by four weeks’ work-leave rotation cycle results in more incidents compared to the four-by-four weeks’ rotation cycle.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A significant part of the high pressure gas transport system of Gasunie cannot be examined by in-line inspection techniques. To ensure safe operation of these pipelines, an External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) module for PIMSLIDER (a pipeline integrity management system) is currently under development. The functional specifications of this module are based on NACE RP0502-2002, a recommended practice for ECDA. In addition to this, a new probabilistic methodology has been adopted, to take account for uncertainties associated with ECDA and to quantify the contributions from aboveground surveys and excavations to the integrity of a pipeline. This methodology, which is based on Structural Reliability Analysis (SRA) and Bayesian updating techniques, is presented in more detail in paper IPC2006-10092 of this conference. The DA module of PIMSLIDER enables computerized storage, retrieval and processing of all appropriate pipeline data and therefore guarantees highly accurate, reproducible and time saving integrity analyses of the Gasunie grid. Another important function of this system is the ability to use the complete database of all pipelines to pre-assess the integrity of a particular pipeline. This automated retrieval of data from pipelines with similar characteristics and/or environmental conditions results in a substantial increase of accessible data and enables Gasunie to improve the reliability of applied statistics throughout the process. As a consequence, the overall cost of inspections and excavations can be greatly reduced. In the Pre-Assessment phase, the DA module assists the integrity manager in gathering and analyzing data necessary to determine the current condition of a pipeline. After collection and visualization of the available data, the user can identify suitable ECDA regions. Furthermore, the gathered data are used to construct prior distributions of parameters relevant to the SRA model, such as the number and size of corrosion defects and pipeline-related parameters. In the Indirect Inspections step, the DA module allows the user to store and analyze the data from aboveground surveys, in order to identify and define the severity of coating faults and areas at which corrosion activity may occur. The probabilistic methodology accounts for the individual performance of each applied survey technique in terms of missed defects and false indications, in general a major source of uncertainty in ECDA. In the Direct Examinations phase, excavations are carried out to collect data to assess possible corrosion activity. Subsequently, the ECDA module uses this information to update, among other things, the parameters concerning the performance of survey techniques, the number of defects and the corrosion rate. As a result, updated failure frequencies are calculated for each ECDA-region (after each excavation if required), which are then used by the DA module to advise the integrity manager if additional mitigating activities are necessary, or by defining a reassessment interval.

Résumé :
First of all a survey of the most relevant definitions and hypotheses concerning data, information, communication and knowledge is proposed. Main aim of this introduction is to give to the reader a reference frame for the analysis of the students’ learning and for their knowledge construction works. Soon after some wrong ideas are analyzed with respect to the above conceptual frame, i.e. with respect to didactic communication, to human knowledge construction and to individual cleverness in the use of the concepts pertaining to specific disciplinary fields. At last some considerations on the above results are reported and some hints and suggestions for a revision of the Informing Science definition are proposed; all is done in a perspective that assigns to Informing Science a trans-disciplinary function that helps well-established disciplines like Didactics, Psychology, Philosophy etc. to find new strategies for the analysis of the teaching-learning process.

Résumé :
Robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery is gaining popularity because it has been shown to improve accuracy, reduce errors, and assists surgeons in performing more difficult procedures. However, positioning the ports and posing the robot arms to be able to perform the intervention while avoiding tool or arm collisions can be a lengthy and difficult process. The aim of this project was to design a decision aid for patient-specific, optimal port placement in pre-operative planning. This paper presents the analysis and design methods, including the building of separate patient and robot models. Based on a requirements analysis, a symbolic model of the robot was created based on the da Vinci Si Surgical System using the modified Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) parameters to define its work volume. Data from anthropometric tables and patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures were collected to create a library of realistic patient models. These two models, combined in a 3D interactive virtual environment, allow selection of suitable port locations, and a pose and position plan for the robotic arms with unrestricted access to the target area while avoiding collisions between instruments and other objects in the operating room. A simple and elegant protocol was then designed to collect actual patient data for validation of the models. Once validated, this model can be used for any robotic procedure within the abdomen.

Résumé :
Rapid Prototyping (RP) has been considered, over the last decades, as a highly promising technology for reducing product development time and cost, as well as for addressing the need for customization and faster response to the market needs. Nowadays this technology is also used widely in medical applications (Medical Rapid Prototyping – MRP), supporting diagnosis and treatment in Neurosurgery, Orthopedic and Dental-Cranio-Maxillo-Facial surgery as well as in Tissue Engineering. The scan data that are usually obtained by Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are used to build a 3D CAD model of the patient’s pathological region. The 3D model is used to construct the real size prototype using one of the existing RP processes. This assists surgeons in gaining a detailed insight of the problem, making the diagnosis and treatment easier and more reliable. This study presents the current benefits and barriers of Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing methods and applications in the field of medicine. Most of the recent state-of-art developments and case studies of MRP are presented. Their limitations are discussed along with the challenges to be addressed in the future.

Dans 16th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. ASMEDC, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone16-48223.

Résumé :
Effective use of nuclear fuel is an important issue in nuclear material engineering. Pu recycle is refocused for effective use of nuclear fuel. MOX and inert matrix fuels (e.g., ZrO2-PuO2) are expected for effective burning Pu, however, Pu material is difficult to manage due to its radiotoxicity. As a result, cost of experimental facilities is very expensive. As computer simulation not only cuts cost for experimental researches but also provides deep understandings in atomic behavior, we have performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to research its material characteristics. In order to obtain realistic results, many atoms and many time steps are essential, however, such computation takes too much long time. So a parallelized program code is executed on a grid computing environment provided by an Information Technology Based Laboratory (ITBL) project. Its grid computing infrastructure (hereafter an ITBL system) provides users a seamless computing environment and many kinds of software tools such as a file manager, a program execution manager, and a cooperative tool for AVS/Express on a grid computing environment. Furthermore, a client application program interface (API) is provided to build a variety of grid applications on a client terminal PC for accessing the ITBL’s functionalities. As there is a strong request from users in our material simulation research to utilize their native visualization software, we have selected the client API to build an application-specific grid computing environment which cooperates with the visualization software. We have built a customized graphical user interface (GUI) computing environment on a client terminal PC by using the Java client API. It provides a seamless access to ITBL’s computational resources from a user’s terminal PC. It also assists choosing parameters for the computation in parameter survey runs. Moreover, it enables successive processing of computation on remote parallel computers and visualization on a user’s terminal PC in a single operation. The environment also provides a user friendly GUI interface for parameter controls and monitoring of submitted jobs. As a result, this computing environment removes difficulties in manual operations for parallel computations and visualizations in parameter survey runs. So, it prevents users from mistakes in the operations. This environment is expected to accelerate finding procedure for good nuclear fuel.

Résumé :
Fort Huachuca Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) sent funds to ERDC-CERL to develop a historic context that assists Fort Huachuca personnel in identifying the likely history and provenance of numerous historic range features located across Fort Huachuca's training lands. The historic context will be used by cultural resources personnel to evaluate and manage the resources appropriately. Various historic training range features (e.g., structures, fragments, and items left over from previous activities) are located across the ranges of Fort Huachuca, representing its long and storied history. To help identify and catalog these features, ERDC-CERL conducted a field survey of the training ranges in 2016 in or-der to photograph the historic range features. Forty-one historic range features were identified. Researchers conducted archival research, literature reviews, and image analysis of historic and current maps and photographs to identify the 41 historic range features and place them within a chronological context of Fort Huachuca's training ranges. The report concludes with guidance on how to identify and associate sites and features within the overall historic training range chronology and evaluate them appropriately for significance and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility.
