Résumé :
Assimilation theory has been subject to intensive critique for decades. Yet no other framework has provided the social science community with as deep a corpus of cumulative findings concerning the incorporation of immigrants and their descendants. We argue that assimilation theory has not lost its utility for the study of contemporary immigration to the United States. In making our case, we review critically the canonical account of assimilation provided by Milton Gordon and others; we refer to Shibutani and Kwan's theory of ethnic stratification to suggest some directions to take in reformulating assimilation theory. We also examine some of the arguments frequently made to distinguish between the earlier mass immigration of Europeans and the immigration of the contemporary era and find them to be inconclusive. Finally, we sift through some of the evidence about the socioeconomic and residential assimilation of recent immigrant groups. Though the record is clearly mixed, we find evidence consistent with the view that assimilation is taking place, albeit unevenly.

Résumé :
Abstract The objective of this study is to develop a framework for dynamically downscaling spaceborne precipitation products using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model with four-dimensional variational data assimilation (4D-Var). Numerical experiments have been conducted to 1) understand the sensitivity of precipitation downscaling through point-scale precipitation data assimilation and 2) investigate the impact of seasonality and associated changes in precipitation-generating mechanisms on the quality of spatiotemporal downscaling of precipitation. The point-scale experiment suggests that assimilating precipitation can significantly affect the precipitation analysis, forecast, and downscaling. Because of occasional overestimation or underestimation of small-scale summertime precipitation extremes, the numerical experiments presented here demonstrate that the wintertime assimilation produces downscaled precipitation estimates that are in closer agreement with the reference National Centers for Environmental Prediction stage IV dataset than similar summertime experiments. This study concludes that the WRF 4D-Var system is able to effectively downscale a 6-h precipitation product with a spatial resolution of 20 km to hourly precipitation with a spatial resolution of less than 10 km in grid spacing—relevant to finescale hydrologic applications for the era of the Global Precipitation Measurement mission.

Résumé :
This study focuses on the ability of the global Land Data Assimilation System, LDAS-Monde, to improve the representation of land surface variables (LSVs) over Burkina-Faso through the joint assimilation of satellite derived surface soil moisture (SSM) and leaf area index (LAI) from January 2001 to June 2018. The LDAS-Monde offline system is forced by the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalysis ERA5 as well as ERA-Interim former reanalysis, leading to reanalyses of LSVs at 0.25° × 0.25° and 0.50° × 0.50° spatial resolution, respectively. Within LDAS-Monde, SSM and LAI observations from the Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS) are assimilated with a simplified extended Kalman filter (SEKF) using the CO2-responsive version of the ISBA (Interactions between Soil, Biosphere, and Atmosphere) land surface model (LSM). First, it is shown that ERA5 better represents precipitation and incoming solar radiation than ERA-Interim former reanalysis from ECMWF based on in situ data. Results of four experiments are then compared: Open-loop simulation (i.e., no assimilation) and analysis (i.e., joint assimilation of SSM and LAI) forced by either ERA5 or ERA-Interim. After jointly assimilating SSM and LAI, it is noticed that the assimilation is able to impact soil moisture in the first top soil layers (the first 20 cm), and also in deeper soil layers (from 20 cm to 60 cm and below), as reflected by the structure of the SEKF Jacobians. The added value of using ERA5 reanalysis over ERA-Interim when used in LDAS-Monde is highlighted. The assimilation is able to improve the simulation of both SSM and LAI: The analyses add skill to both configurations, indicating the healthy behavior of LDAS-Monde. For LAI in particular, the southern region of the domain (dominated by a Sudan-Guinean climate) highlights a strong impact of the assimilation compared to the other two sub-regions of Burkina-Faso (dominated by Sahelian and Sudan-Sahelian climates). In the southern part of the domain, differences between the model and the observations are the largest, prior to any assimilation. These differences are linked to the model failing to represent the behavior of some specific vegetation species, which are known to put on leaves before the first rains of the season. The LDAS-Monde analysis is very efficient at compensating for this model weakness. Evapotranspiration estimates from the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM) project as well as upscaled carbon uptake from the FLUXCOM project and sun-induced fluorescence from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) are used in the evaluation process, again demonstrating improvements in the representation of evapotranspiration and gross primary production after assimilation.

Résumé :
Abstract Trends in marine wind speed and significant wave height are investigated using the global reanalysis ERA-Interim over the period 1979–2012, based on monthly-mean and monthly-maximum data. Besides the traditional reanalysis, the authors include trends obtained at different forecast range, available up to 10 days ahead. Any model biases that are corrected differently over time are likely to introduce spurious trends of variable magnitude. However, at increased forecast range the model tends to relax, being less affected by assimilation. Still, there is a trade-off between removing the impact of data assimilation at longer forecast range and getting a lower level of uncertainty in the predictions at shorter forecast range. Because of the sheer amount of assimilations made in ERA-Interim, directly and indirectly affecting the data, it is difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish effects imposed by all updates. Here, special emphasis is put on the introduction of wave altimeter data in August 1991, the only type of data directly affecting the wave field. From this, it is shown that areas of higher model bias introduce quite different trends depending on forecast range, most apparent in the North Atlantic and eastern tropical Pacific. Results are compared with 23 in situ measurements, Envisat altimeter winds, and two stand-alone ECMWF operational wave model (EC-WAM) runs with and without wave altimeter assimilation. Here, the 48-h forecast is suggested to be a better candidate for trend estimates of wave height, mainly due to the step change imposed by altimeter observations. Even though wind speed seems less affected by undesirable step changes, the authors believe that the 24–48-h forecast more effectively filters out any unwanted effects.

Résumé :
The task of this paper is a quantitative assessment of the possible fact and speed of assimilation of Ukrainian migrants in the modern Russian Federation according to the data of all-Russian censuses of 2002 and 2010. In all regions of the Russian Federation, and even in regions where the absolute number of the population has increased, we note the decrease in the number of Ukrainians significantly exceeded the overall rate of depopulation. The share of the decrease in the number of Ukrainians, which goes beyond the general rate of depopulation in a relevant region, can characterize the rate of assimilation of Ukrainian migrants in Russia. Thus, the annual rate of assimilation of Ukrainian migrants in the Russian Federation varies in different regions from 2.38% to 6.25%. The average rate of Ukrainian migrants’ assimilation is estimated for regions of the Russian Federation as 3.78% per year. Some assumptions are made about the main factors of such an unexpectedly rapid rate of peaceful assimilation of Ukrainians. Related factors include the tradition of Russians’ scornful attitude towards foreigners and “younger brothers” (a terms used to refer to Ukrainians); the Russian Federation’s disregard towards the cultural and educational needs of national minorities that do not have their territorial administrative formations on the territory of the Russian Federation; as well as a disregard of Ukrainian society and the Ukrainian state towards Ukrainians living on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Résumé :
Geostationary meteorological satellites can provide continuous observations of high-impact weather events with a high temporal and spatial resolution. Sounding the atmosphere using a microwave instrument onboard a geostationary satellite has aroused great study interests for years, as it would increase the observational efficiency as well as provide a new perspective in the microwave spectrum to the measuring capability for the current observational system. In this study, the capability of assimilating future geostationary microwave sounder (GEOMS) radiances was developed in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model’s data assimilation (WRFDA) system. To investigate if these frequently updated and widely distributed microwave radiances would be beneficial for typhoon prediction, observational system simulation experiments (OSSEs) using synthetic microwave radiances were conducted using the mesoscale numerical model WRF and the advanced hybrid ensemble–variational data assimilation method for the Lekima typhoon that occurred in early August 2019. The results show that general positive forecast impacts were achieved in the OSSEs due to the assimilation of GEOMS radiances: errors of analyses and forecasts in terms of wind, humidity, and temperature were both reduced after assimilating GEOMS radiances when verified against ERA-5 data. The track and intensity predictions of Lekima were also improved before 68 h compared to the best track data in this study. In addition, rainfall forecast improvements were also found due to the assimilation impact of GEOMS radiances. In general, microwave observations from geostationary satellites provide the possibility of frequently assimilating wide-ranging microwave information into a regional model in a finer resolution, which can potentially help improve numerical weather prediction (NWP).

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Beginning with the first European colonists in the New World, captivity has been means of cultural exchange between whites and Native Americans. The narratives recounting the captives’ experiences became popular literature which inspired visual artists who reinterpreted the tales to coincide with their cultural needs. In the early twentieth century, progressive reformer, William Pryor Letchworth, hired artist Henry Kirke Bush-Brown to create a sculpture of captive Mary Jemison who, instead of returning to her natal culture, chose to stay among the Seneca becoming fully assimilated. Aligning with their progressive values, their perception of her character is reflected in the Mary Jemison Monument. The monument creates an image of the ideal woman, immigrant, and Native American who holds and practices white middle-class values of strength, independence, and determination. Exemplifying these American values, the sculpture accesses an American identity emphasizing the acceptance and practice of these supposedly American traits. Immigrants and Native Americans could become fully Americanized by adopting these characteristics and leaving their traditional ways behind. Contingent on their assimilation of white middle-class values, the perceived problems facing a diversified society could be eliminated. In so doing, a more harmonious America aligning with Letchworth’s beliefs could be created.

Ellis, Lucy A. « An instrumental study of alveolar to velar assimilation in slow and fast speech using EPG and EMA techniques ». Thesis, Queen Margaret University, 2000. https://eresearch.qmu.ac.uk/handle/20.500.12289/7442.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis evaluates the widely-held notion that place assimilation is (i) more frequent at faster rates of speech and (ii) a gradual phonetic process. The latter view is based on previous small-scale EPG studies which showed evidence of partial alveolar assimilations lacking complete stop closure on the alveolar ridge but with a residual tongue body gesture. For the present study, EPG data from 10 speakers were collected. Two experimental sequences, /n#k/ and /ŋ#k/, embedded in meaningful sentences, were produced by subjects 10 times each in a slow/careful style and 10 times each in a fast/casual style. The first sequence captures the potential site of assimilation and the second is a lexical velar-velar sequence with which cases of complete assimilation can be compared. The results showed that, overall, assimilation was more frequent in fast speech than in careful speech, although timing analysis revealed that assimilation is not the automatic consequence of rate-induced changes in intergestural timing of /n#k/. In fast speech, six of the ten speakers showed relatively consistent assimilatory preferences: they either produced only complete assimilations or they never assimilated. However, four speakers showed considerable intra-speaker variability. Two of the four produced either full alveolars or complete assimilations in the manner of a categorical opposition (complete assimilations were indistinguishable from control /ŋ#k/ sequences). The other two speakers produced a continuum of forms that could be ranked from full alveolars to complete assimilations via partial assimilations. Using the same stimuli, a follow-up combined EPG/EMA study was carried out, the purpose of which was to look for reduced coronal gestures undetectable in tongue-palate contact-only data. Two 'categorical' assimilators were re-recorded and these gestures were not found. This supports the interpretation that for some speakers assimilation is determined at a higher level through the application of a cognitive rule, while for others variation is 'computed on-line' during speech production itself. Current phonological models of assimilation are found to be unable to capture both gradient effects and more radical feature-sized substitutions under a single framework.

Hayes, Howard James. « Indian women, domesticity, and liberal state formation : The gendered dimension of Indian policy reform during the assimilation and allotment eras ». Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278587.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The question this thesis asks is: How have non-Indian conceptions of masculinity and femininity shaped federal Indian policy during the late nineteenth-century? The answer to this question lies, I will argue, in the process of liberal state formation itself; a process which necessarily involves the continued reproduction of gender hierarchies and systems of male power that privilege men and masculinity over women and femininity. This public/private dichotomy, and the system of gender relations it supports, restricts women's social role to within a highly circumscribed private sphere separate and distinct from the public sphere of economy and state occupied by men. Therefore, as a reflection of the overall process of liberal state formation, the process of incorporating Indian peoples into the American social, economic, and political mainstream undertaken during the assimilation and allotment eras, necessarily entailed the reproduction of Euroamerican gender hierarchies within Indian societies.

The dissertation explores the development of the novel genre in 20th-century American Indian literature, particularly in the decades prior to the Native American Renaissance--whose critical fortune ended up obscuring the emergence of a novelistic tradition by earlier native writers in English. Authors like Mourning Dove, D'Arcy McNickle, John Joseph Mathews, John Milton Oskison, employed the novel form to tell about the Indian experience during a period in which the integrity and identity of native communities were repeatedly undermined, first through a number of assimilationist policies (from the turn of the century to the 1920s) and then through the termination legislation of the 1950s, despite the parenthesis of the Indian New Deal in the 1930s. Though mainly featuring the modes of realism and naturalism (also in the particular version of "ethnic modernism"), the novel proved to be a flexible genre that could accomodate elements of Indian culture, such as oral storytelling or the trickster figure. In this way, the genre could vehicle criticism against the representations of the Indian in the Anglo-American tradition, or simply give voice to the creative energies of the writers and their communities, which had been invariably silenced and forgotten after the completed political and military takeover of the previous century. In some cases, authors from this early generation managed to articulate viewpoints that were consistent with the ideas of Indian sovereignty and self-determination, thereby anticipating a crucial aspect of the literary politics expressed by the subsequent generation of Indian novelists, such as N. Scott Momaday, Leslie M. Silko, James Welch, Gerald Vizenor.

Résumé :
“Roman Assimilation of Greek Myths and Botany” traces the absorption of Greek botanical thought by the Romans. Although Roman thinkers—Cato the Elder, Varro, Virgil and Columella—wrote about agriculture, theoretical botany was largely abandoned, while the one—sex model of plants remained entrenched. Roman myths, many syncretized with Greek, reinforced the gender bias by which plants were associated with women. Chloris, Greek goddess of flowers, was assimilated to Flora, and Ceres to Demeter. Ovid recounts a story concerning Flora and Juno that symbolically connects flowers to parthenogenesis. Of Greek derived works on plants, only Pliny’s Historia Natura and Nicolaus of Damascus’ De Plantis were widely available in the Middle Ages. One interpretation of flowers by Pliny the Elder, that they were created to delight human beings, endured into of the Christian era, while St. Augustine sited the “degeneration” of plants grown from seed as “palpable evidence” for original sin.

Résumé :
The final chapter turns to the subject of gender and ethnic assimilation in Cukor’s films of the 1950s, the last years in which the director would find regular work. Within a communist-baiting era heading into the long Cold War, Hollywood films of the 1950s suppressed but nonetheless (or necessarily) addressed familiar fears in new ways, from attention to a postwar version of melting-pot politics to modernized versions of gender roles for “ethnic” women. Cukor’s most successful films of the decade reveal similar concerns, despite enormous differences in focus and style. Born Yesterday (1950) and It Should Happen to You (1952) are urban romantic comedies; Bhowani Junction (1956) is an Indian epic; and Wild is the Wind (1957) is an Italian immigrant melodrama in a rustic setting.

Résumé :
Throughout the Umayyad and early Abbasid eras, Islam was the minority religion amongst a majority of Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians. Yet, while it was the numerical minority, in terms of cultural capital identifying as Muslim provided social, professional and even monetary benefits. During the Abbasid period (750–934), it is likely that the majority of the population still officially identified as non-Muslim;1 however, it is during this era that textual evidence for conversion and assimilation begins to increase. At times it is difficult to distinguish exactly which type of behaviour the texts describe: conversion or assimilation. Acculturation to Islam may have occurred among non-Muslim, and in this case specifically Christian, communities before, or likely as the first step towards, large-scale conversion over the longue durée. In many instances, textual sources appear to be talking about conversion when realistically they may be referencing acculturation.

Résumé :
This research analyzes the political content in Sudanese music. The aim is to scrutinize and interpret the meaning of such political content and to place it in a historical context of the country's post-independence history. The songs of some of Sudan's most respected musicians of the current era such as Mohamed Al Amin, Abdel Karim Al Kabli and Mohamed Wardi are examined. Guided by framing analysis, the study employs six framing devices: nationalist/patriotic, responsibility, loyalty/allegiance, assimilation, ethnocentric and superiority frame. The aim of the investigation is to deconstruct the content of nationalistic songs to fully appreciate the roles they play in both popular culture and in the political arena. Results suggest that Sudanese popular music is high in nationalistic/patriotic and loyalty/allegiance but low in assimilation content. Results also indicate that Sudan's post-independence history is rich with songs that reflect the country's political situation.

Résumé :
The long-term trends of the expected largest waves in the ice-free Arctic waters from Laptev to Beaufort Seas was studied analyzing the ERA-interim reanalysis from 1979 to 2016. The analysis showed that the positive trend is largest in October and increased almost 70 cm in 38 years. For ships navigating the Northern Ship Route, it is important to know what the possible largest waves to expect during its cruise. In view of conducting the extreme value analysis, the uncertainty of the largest wave needs to be validated. However, the observation in the Arctic Ocean is limited. We, therefore, rely on the reanalysis wave products in the Arctic Ocean, whose uncertainty is yet to be determined. ERA-Interim and ERA-5 are compared in the Laptev, the East Siberian, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. The comparison is relevant as the two products differ in its horizontal grid resolution and availability of the satellite altimeter significant wave height data assimilation. During 2010–2016 when the ERA5 is available, only a small difference from ERA-Interim was detected in the mean. However, the expected largest waves in the domain tended to be large for the ERA-5, 8% normalized bias. The tendency was quite similar with a high correlation of 0.98.

Résumé :
Abstract With growing worldwide consensus about the impacts of climate change, the oil and gas industry faces unprecedented pressure to minimize its carbon footprint. The biggest source of carbon emissions in the industry is the so-called fugitive emissions, accounting for ~57% of the total oil and gas industry emissions, resulting from leaks in oil and gas pipelines and facilities. Fast, accurate and economic prediction of leaks in pipelines would significantly reduce fugitive emissions by reducing the time to respond to a leak. The proposed leak detection algorithm is a mixture of state-of-the-art machine learning and data assimilation techniques with well-known physical models and correlations of fluid flow in pipeline networks. The algorithm is tasked to continuously oversee pipeline operations by means of pressure and flow measurements. The proposed algorithm can probabilistically detect when and where a leak is taking place at the frequency of data collection (minutes/hours), thus minimizing the time to respond and the total fluid loss (fugitive emissions). The proposed algorithm utilizes a variant of the ensemble Kalman filter for probabilistic data assimilation together with an underlying network physics model. The model is augmented with meta-models and anomaly detection machine learning algorithms for real-time detection of leaks. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through a synthetic test case based on a realistic dataset.

Résumé :
Abstract Atmospheric and ocean datasets using numerical modeling allied to data assimilation are valuable tools for planning and maintaining marine activities, particularly due to their spatial coverage and resolution. However, even modern analyses and reanalyses present critical errors where cyclonic winds are often underestimated in some locations, leading to issues in wind-wave climate hindcasts and forecasts. This work aims to evaluate two of the newest datasets available regarding their ability to reproduce extratropical cyclone tracks associated with extreme waves in the Atlantic Ocean. The analysis is focused on the storm track position and cyclone intensity, two important features that control the wave climate. The datasets used are the ECMWF’s ERA5 and NCEP’s CFSv2. The cyclones are identified and compared between 2011 and 2018 using the relative vorticity at 850hPa and the intensity is measured through the 10-meters wind speed. The results show that the differences in track density exist mainly in coastal areas and they can be related to the coarser resolution of CFSv2 compared to ERA5. CFSv2 presents a higher number of cyclones associated with extreme wave events in the South and North Atlantic, corresponding to 87.1% and 89.2% of the cyclones identified, while ERA5 presents 66.6% and 59.5% respectively. The maximum intensity distribution shows that CFSv2 tends to produce more intense cyclones than ERA5, even for identical storms in the datasets. The distances of matching cyclones in the two datasets are around 0.5°.
