MAUGERI, Luca Sebastiano. « Mistica, ascesi ed edificazione in Soren Kierkegaard ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Verona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/337439.
Texte intégralThe purpose of this research is to outline an historical-philological analysis of Kierkegaard’s works in order to show through the texts all the possible suggestions and influences that the Danish philosopher could have received from the Christian mystical tradition and also from Christian ascetism. It extends further showing his negative reactions to philosophical mysticism as well. The methodological task of the dissertation is to establish, whereas it is possible, a level of certainty of proofs based on the concept of “pragmatic objectivity” given by the relation between texts read by Kierkegaard and text written by himself insofar as it delineates a conceptual path and a possible new hermeneutical reading of some points of Kierkegaard’s thought and about his anthropological reflexions based on the relationship between God and the “single individual”. First two sections of my dissertation show the connections and the different kinds of mysticism developed in German-Danish idealism (especially the one developed by Franz Baader, Johann Erdmann and Hans Martensen) and in German pietism (especially in Johann Arndt, Philipp J.Spener and Gerhard Tersteegen), that are the two of the most important channels of Kierkegaard’s philosophical and religious education. It also reveals how the Danish thinker reacted to all these interpretation of mystic and mysticism. This part of the research covers the period of Kierkegaard’s life from 1835 to 1846, that is the time of his studies, his dissertation and his “first authorship”, in which from one hand we can find his refusal to the idea of mysticism as he found it in most of German idealism (with some exceptions), from the other hand he revised pietistic mysticism through the question of self-consciousness on introducing his personal concept of “Upbuilding”. In the third and last section of the work it demonstrates how the most remarkable influences from the classic mystic tradition of Christianity are in what many call Kierkegaard’s “second authorship” (Anden forfatterskab, 1847-1851). In fact, we can see in the works of this period the presence of authors like Tauler, Silesius and Fénelon, joined together by Kierkegaard self in his peculiar conception of anthropology, based on the relation between the presence of God’s image (Guds billede) in the man and the assent made by man self “becoming Christian” before God (For Gud), to Christ as the only Model (Forbillede) for Christianity.
Bacco, Franca. « Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri : tra scetticismo, fede e ascesi mistica ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3424847.
Texte intégralLa ricerca è articolata in cinque capitoli.
Texte intégralThe purpose of this study is to demonstrate how within the Quaestiones ad Thalassium the monk Massimo the Confessor’s reasoning is structured in two different perspectives: practical philosophy and mystical ascension. The idea behind this type of research is determined by two needs: the first one, obvious and tangible, is based on the scarceness of thorough studies on this worthy philosopher and theologian, whom for a long time was only considered for his suggestive critical interpretation of the Holy Writ; the second one, however, a deeper one, aims to demonstrate how Massimo’s work is characterised by a complex and articulate philosophic framework, which the following research aims to illustrate. In order to obtain a complete study which would render the complexity characterising the monk, the first part of the research Massimo the Confessor- theologian and philosopher focuses on the monk’s personality and its various aspects, by revisiting under a historiographic light his life’s most significant events within their specific historic context (Ch. 1) and by reconstructing what could be considered an ideal corpus of his authentic works (Ch. 2). It seems easy to deduct that, when analysing Massimo’s work and in order to understand its time of writing and its contents, two complimentary approaches can be used: the chronological and the historic-doctrinal one. Each one of his works has been synoptically analysed together with a list of the different editions and translations into the modern tongue. Considering the scarceness of scientific studies which specifically focus on the Quaestiones ad Thalassium, the aim of this thesis is to provide the reader with a genesis of his work in order to trace the overall conceptual structure which sustains the whole study (Ch. 3). In the second part of the study, Quaestiones ad Thalassium an ethical and ascetic essay, the objective is to demonstrate how his work is actually a pedagogic essay, in which Massimo’s aim is to indicate to his interlocutor Talassio the road to mystical ascension. Within the ἀποκρίσεις, as a matter of fact, lie three fundamental elements: the ethical element, the contemplative one, and the theological one, which articulate themselves, in the dialectic πρᾶξις-θεωρία-θεολογία. The essay is therefore primarily aimed to the follower, whose fundamental aspiration needs to be the mystic experience. Through the analysis of the three dimensions (Ch. 1) mentioned earlier, we have illustrated how Massimo is able to progress from the ethic to the contemplative dimension in order to finally reach an understanding of divine reality in a theological context. As a matter of fact the Christian’s main objective is the ascension to perfection, which is made possible by an authentic and active relationship with God. In all of the Confessor’s works, and in the Quaestiones ad Thalassium in particular, the mystical ascension is indicated as feasible for man as he was created «in His own image and likeness» and determined in his own authentic essence by the logos-tropos relationship (Ch. 2). Within this perspective, the understanding of the actual ontological structure of the universe leads to realising how divinisation, the ultimate objective of ascension, is possible for man. Through divinisation, man can recognise himself in both Adam and Christ, and conceive himself as a mediator for a cosmic liturgy, which returns man to the Creator according to His original design. This dissertation thesis, therefore, questions Massimo the Confessor through his works, particularly the Quaestiones ad Thalassium, in order to demonstrate how the monk was a philosopher as well as a theologian, and how he focused his reflections on man’s authentic essence. Texte intégralThe aim of this study is to demonstrate that as the doctor answers (responds) to the expectations of society in his task of promoting health, both he and those who are entrusted to him, develop a practice that I call medical asceticism. What the research tries to investigate is the pursuit of a healthy body as an ideal. The research was developed from the analysis of present speeches in platonic texts and its reflections in contemporary medical statements. The theoretical dialogue of the thesis emphasized the Nietzscheâs approach to the truth and moral. The arguments presented are divided in three books: 1- Medical Asceticism: a search of the truth as an ideal; 2- Medical scientific truth and moral and 3- Prognoses and prescriptions. Among the considerations pointed by the thesis, we checked the intersection between the practices of information and medical advisories and the search of a healthy life. The cult of the healthy life seems to be linked to the cult of the medical scientific truth and to the production of adjusted and submissive subjectivities. The medical ascetic ideal, observed in the production and consumption of truths appears like a demonstration of a game of forces, a will that Nietzsche called will to power.

The second one puts in discussion modes to interpret myths in Grotowski´s work, its function, its significance and its influence on different kinds of artistic process: choice and treatment of texts, audience parts, actor´s work on character composition and actor ´s training. Theoretical references about mythical and symbolic questions are extracted from symbolic hermeneutic theory. In terms of conclusion, this dissertation puts in relief similarities between actions in the heroic mythology and Grotowski´s work, fundamentally, sacrificial acts as an way to consolidate an spiritual dimension

Ascetism became known for the efforts made by metaphysician to reach their spiritual purpose. Nietzsche published a critique on ascetical ideals in the III Dissertation of the Genealogy of Morals because ascesis had taken transcendental life as a reference for all values beyond this life which is immanent. An ascetic metaphysical morality emphasized the dualism this life another life , which Nietzsche contested by stating it had philosophically originated with Plato as morality against nature . Thus, by returning to the cradle of Western culture, Nietzsche propounds a revision of ascesis based on transcendence, immutability, and truth from the standpoint of life, this life a constant flow, concerned exclusively with change, with outward aspects. In a nutshell, such ascesis refers to becoming a follower of Dionysus, to lead a dionysian life: a whirl of forces that continuously come together and apart, creating centres of will to power, giving rise to everything alive or, in other words, everything that appears and disappears into what is commonly called reality . Therefore, anyone willing to go further ahead of what is ordinary in the contemporary world could only demand of oneself the utmost self-overcoming, the utmost self-control in order to attain a quintessential spiritualization of instincts instead of the sterilization that transcendent values have long prescribed to the body as a rule for life. This hypothetical being is embodied in ascetic Nietzsche , here represented as a dionysian ascetic set against the ascetical ideal

Texte intégralIn this research, we studied alternative communities that promote self-care practices, as well as environmental and community care.We problematized if there are ascetical practices in these communities - understanding asceticism from Ortega (2008) and Foucault (2006, 2009, 1998), which would be a transition from one type of subjectivity to another one to be achieved through exercises on itself, in other words, the ascetic oscillates between a refused identity to another to be drawn by an art that focuses itlself. This research was conducted through the analysis of files, observations of daily practices and interviews with open questions in order to achieve reflections and thoughts of the residents of alternative communities. For our study, we chose the Alternative Community of Campina, located in the Capon Valley/Bahia; Sabiaguaba community, located in Fortaleza-CE; and the National Meeting of Alternative Communities (ENCA). The research points to ways of living that create new subjectivities, in which the subject feels responsible for taking care of themselves, others and the environment

Texte intégralThis work examines the figure of Beatriz as a representation of Knowledge, since she focus the main subjects discussed by Dante that comes from philosophy, poetry, theology and from the Italian language. Beatriz receives the task of being the poet’s main guide on his journey to search the knowledge to reach God. For this reason she represents the stage of knowledge of man, intermediate between the matter and spirituality, structures in which Dante fixes himself to show the reality. This appears on the form of the three levels on the journeys carried out by the poet, that here are distinct to a better clarification, but in life they cross each other so that one serves as a base to state the other. For that, was accomplished a research that compares the researchers of Dante about the Commedia and examining the figure of Beatriz by the light of traditional symbols. At last, this work observes the relation between the knowledge represented by her and the reality of those who search it, examining with it the situation of the contemporary world on the conception of Dante’s Knowledge.

Texte intégralThe aim of this research is the notion of asceticism and its application with Caesarius of Arles, monk-bishop of the VIth century. For him, this requirement for hardship in the daily life of the people appears to represent a prerequisite for the return to faith among the congregation he addresses. It is through hardship that Caesarius wishes to divert the most ordinary people from any danger conveyed by pagan behaviour, but he does, however, not forget charity. His notion of governance is democratic; he fights abuse and is protective and kind towards the poor. The thesis examines these questions using Sermons to people but also Sermons to monks and Monastic works in order to discover whether the vocabulary used is identical and if for Caesarius, the reference to the good Christian is the monk indeed. This will highlight the bishop of Arles’ innovating character for Church life as, according to him, only a modest lifestyle will enable everyone to save one’s soul but also comply with the message of Christ

Texte intégralPierre-Albert Jourdan (1924-1981), after ten years of a more strictly poetic quest, decided and tried, from 1970 to his death, to use writing, especially in fragments, as a way of transforming himself in order to wholly encounter reality. He resorted then to many methods to act on himself, his will, his sensibility, his intellect, or his affectivity. Aphorisms and self-injonctions helped him, with acuteness or even violence, and the use of irony, to get rid of some behaviours or thoughts. In more poetic-like texts, the working on language was intended to deepen a interior state of receptivity toward the natural world, the invisible that seems to underlie it, and the ethic suggestions that it offered. Jourdan tried also to direct writing against the intellect, to shake it, as the zen koan does, and make himself lose its representations and experiment « things as they are ». Or he relied on humor, on a withdrawing expression, to detach himself from emotions related to failure and death, and lovingly accept even his own ruin. An attempt that, even if he often repeated its insufficiency, seems to have permitted the light, the serenity, that can be felt more and more in his last writings, their beauty, and their deep utility for the reader who accepts to open himself to an experience of being

From the study of narratives of Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa, we attempted to identify, catalog and describe some elements that they turn on their literary discourse. Readings were taken on a considerable part of the author's work, which originated assertions, assumptions and relationships observed in this study. By analyzing rosianos statements, prioritized five highlight relevant essential discursive themes in his speech, which were divided and organized into five themes: "love, night, religion, people and nature." The authors chosen as analytical support to address the love were the Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle, thinkers Erich Fromm, Benedito Nunes, Arthur Schopenhauer, André Comte- Sponville Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman and semiotician Algirdas Greimas. The authors required as analytical support to treat religiosity were the philosopher St. Augustine, the Essayist Elisa Guimarães and two experts in iconography, Jacopo Varazze and Nilza Botelho Megale. The authors adopted as analytical support for crushing the night were the folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo, the demonologist Eliphas Lévi and literary critic Massaud Moisés. The authors listed as analytical support to subsidize the axis on the speech of the people were the socio- linguist Dino Preti, sociologist Roger Bastide, the philosopher Jean - Jacques Rousseau, the thinker Antonio Candido, the anthropologist Claude Lévi - Strauss and again the folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo. The authors used as analytical support to embrace nature were Heraclitus of Ephesus and Empedocles of Agrigento philosophers and thinkers Humberto Maturana, Francisco Varela, Fritjof Capra and Gaston Bachelard.

Texte intégralBecause ecstasy and visions often result from ascetic practice, they have been used to gain access to the divine. An alternative view, backed by scientific evidence, is that these are natural phenomena. The body reacts to pain by producing endorphins, which relieve pain, and to sensory deprivation by creating its own sensory stimuli. From this perspective, ascetic practice can be viewed as a form of masochistic form of auto-eroticism. It is no accident that mystics often describe their experiences in sexual terms. The body is made to experience pleasure. Pain is a signal that something is wrong. Rather than punish the body for its ability to feel pleasure through the senses, positive ways of experiencing pleasure should be encouraged; for it is in engaging with the physical world that we develop our moral sense. This is backed by scientific evidence as well.

This thesis presents the derivation, analysis, and implementation of a novel class of decentralized mutual information-based gradient-ascent controllers that continuously move robots equipped with sensors to better observe their environment. We begin with the fundamental problem of deploying a single ground robot equipped with a range sensor and tasked to build an occupancy grid map. The desired explorative behaviors of the robot for occupancy grid mapping highlight the correlation between the information content and the spatial realization of the robot's range measurements. We prove that any occupancy grid controller tasked to maximize a mutual information reward function is eventually attracted to unexplored space, i.e., areas of highest uncertainty. We show that mutual information encodes geometric relationships that are fundamental to robot control and yields geometrically relevant reward surfaces on which robots can navigate. Taking inspiration from geometric-based approaches to distributed robot coordination, we show that many multi-robot inference tasks can be cast in terms of an optimization problem. This optimization problem defines the task of minimizing the conditional entropy associated with the robots' inferred beliefs of the environment, which is equivalent to maximizing the mutual information between the environment state and the robots' next joint observation. Given simple robot dynamics and few probabilistic assumptions, none of which involve Gaussianity, we derive a gradientascent solution approach to these optimization problems that is convergent between sensor observations and locally optimal. More formally, we invoke LaSalle's Invariance Principle to prove that, given enough time between consecutive joint observations, robots following the gradient of mutual information will converge to goal positions that locally maximize the expected information gain resulting from the next observation. We show that the algorithmic implementation of the generalized gradient-ascent controller is not readily distributed among multiple robots, and thus sample-based methods are introduced to distributively approximate the likelihoods of the robots' joint observations. Not only are the involved non-parametric representations compatible with any type of Bayesian filter, but the computational complexities of the resulting decentralized controllers are independent with respect to the number of robots. Concerning the distributed approximations, we give two example consensus-based algorithms that run on an undirected network graph. The first consensus-based algorithm approximates discrete measurement probabilities, while the second approximates continuous likelihood distributions. We show that these anytime approximations provably converge to the correct values on a static and connected network graph without knowledge of the number of robots in the network or the corresponding graph's topology. Lastly, we incorporate the resulting consensus-based algorithms into both a hardware system and a simulation environment to allow for decentralized controller evaluation under non-ideal network settings. For the hardware experiments, the task is to infer the state of a bounded, planar environment by deploying five quadrotor flying robots with simulated sensors in both indoor and outdoor settings. For the numerical simulations, Monte Carlo-based analyses are performed for 100 robots, where each robot is simulated on an independent computer node within a computer cluster system. Simulations are also performed for 1000 robots using a single workstation computer equipped with a multicore GPU-enabled graphics card. The results from both the hardware experiments and numerical simulations validate our theoretical and computational claims throughout the thesis.
