A reader asks: I recently had the opportunity to read Donn and Banagale's informative article entitled, "Neonatal Hyperammonemia" (Pediatrics in Review 1984; 5:203-208). I am somewhat confused by Table 5 which lists the ingredients for 1.5% dextrose-bicarbonate peritoneal dialysate. The use of a total of 167 mEq/L of sodium seems nonphysiologic and combination of calcium and bicarbonate, if I remember correctly, leads to precipitation. Dr. Donn replies: There was an error in Table 5 in our review article. Unfortunately, the error was missed by both authors, internal reviewers, and external reviewers as well. As indicated, the total sodium concentration of the dialysis solution is too high. The total sodium concentration, the combination of sodium chloride and sodium bicarbonate should approximate 132 to 136 mEq/L. At the present time, our special peritoneal dialysis solution contains 95 mEq/L of sodium chloride and 40 mEq/L of sodium bicarbonate for a total of 135 mEq/L. This is certainly within the physiologic realm and avoids problems with sodium flux. With regard to concern about the precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate, the concentrations of both calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate are low enough that they do not exceed the solubility product and, therefore, remain in solution.

The spider subfamily Spartaeinae Wanless, with its only New World tribe Lapsiini (Araneae: Salticidae) is for the first time recorded from Colombia. Six new species of the genera Lapsias Simon and Thrandina Maddison are described and illustrated herein from the country. From the Andean region are described: L. iguaque sp. nov. (♂; Boyacá department), Lapsias quimbaya sp. nov. (♂; Quindío, Risaralda, and Caldas departments), L. tequendama sp. nov. (♂; Cundinamarca department), L. walekeru sp. nov. (♂; La Guajira department), and Thrandina colombiaenpaz sp. nov. (♂♀; Huila department). From the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena department, Caribbean region, is described L. tayrona sp. nov. (♂♀). In addition, new records of Galianora sacha Maddison and L. lorax Maddison for the country are presented, and the female of L. lorax is described for the first time. Finally, a map with plotted distribution of the tribe Lapsiini from South America is presented.

Present study on the morphological characterization of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) was conducted at Maharajpur Vegetable Farm, Department of Horticulture, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur. Utilizing 43 genotypes from different regions of Madhya Pradesh, the study aimed to enhance crop improvement programs by understanding genetic diversity. Present study was conducted on forty- three genotypes of chilli collected from Department of Horticulture, Department of Plant Breeding Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur. Genotypes have harboured appreciable amounts of variation for morphological, growth and yield attributing traits were analyzed for Phenotypic co efficient of variance (PCV), Genotypic co efficient of variance (GCV) and heritability along with genetic advance. Genetic divergence through multivariate analysis using D2 statistics was done and clustering of forty-three genotypes was done using Tocher’s method of clustering analysis. GCV and PCV were resulted as moderate and high level whereas heritability coupled with Genetic advance were recorded as moderate to high level. 6 clusters formed in 43 genotypes using Mahalanobis D2.

Background: Many patients present to emergency departments (EDs) with an altered state of consciousness. Fast exclusion of gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB)-associated intoxication in these patients may optimize diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms and decisions in the ED. Methods: Between January and March 2014, a novel enzymatic test system was used to quantify GHB in blood and urine samples of suspected intoxicated patients in the ED of the University Hospital. The underlying causes for suspected intoxication and the diagnostic and therapeutic measures were documented and analysed retrospectively. Results: GHB measurements were performed in 13 patients with suspected ingestion during a 3-month study period. GHB was positive in six patients showing serum levels between 61.8 mg/l and 254.8 mg/l, and GHB was tested negative in seven patients with a range of 0.3–6.2 mg/l (upper reference limit 6.1 mg/l). Additional intoxication was found in five of six GHB positive (83%, alcohol n = 2 and other drugs n = 5) and in six of seven negative-tested patients (86%, alcohol n = 5 and other drugs n = 1). Conclusion: GHB quantification in the ED provides specific additional information for intoxication, which can lead to more precise diagnostic and therapeutic decisions and may also be important for legal aspects. We believe that GHB analysis in unconscious patients with suspected intoxication may improve the efficient treatment of intoxicated patients.

Chalk Department of particles holes and grain dissolution porosity, an average of 53.2%, followed by argillaceous porous and contraction joints, while a small number of particles dissolved pore, showing a small amount of paste particles seam and tensile crack; Jurassic inter-granular holes and intra-granular dissolution porosity is developed, accounting for the porosity as high as 95%, while a small amount of argillaceous porous and granulizing hole and a very small amount of mold holes. L Oilfield Cretaceous and Jurassic reservoirs inter-granular pores, inter-granular dissolution pore, pore throat combination M-I-1, mainly to large - in the hole, micro-throat, Ю-0-3 large - in the hole Extra Coarse - rough throat-based thin throat, Ю-0-1, Jurassic sandstone pore structure better than the Cretaceous.

CaseA 20-year-old woman was referred to the emergency department with rapid acceleration of complaints of palpitations, fever, diarrhea, and agitation that had been present for several weeks. During physical examination, the patient was uncomfortable and restless with a tachycardia of 170/minute, and a fever of 38.5 °C. Palpation of the neck revealed a small ventral, painless, solid elastic mass, more prominent on the right side, clinically suspicious for goiter. An electrocardiograph showed an atrial flutter of 150/min. Initial laboratory results showed an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 35 mm/hour (0–20 mm/hour) and urine analysis tested positive for ketones.Outcome and TreatmentThe patient was presumed to be suffering from a thyroid storm. She was treated promptly with Propranolol 160 mg and Thiamazole 30 mg twice daily at the emergency department. She was admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit for observation of the heart rhythm, which slowed down to 110/minute the same day and her condition improved clinically. The following day her laboratory result confirmed the diagnosis with a thyroid-stimulating hormone of < 0.01 mIU/L (0.4–4.0 mIU/L) and a free thyroxine (T4) of > 75 pmol/l (10–22 pmol/l). Eventually, she was diagnosed with Graves Disease.DiscussionThyroid storm is an acute, life-threatening, hypermetabolic state induced by excessive release of thyroid hormones. The adult mortality rate is high (90%) if early diagnosis is not made and the patient is left untreated. Therefore, in case of clinical suspicion for thyroid storm, it is critical to start prompt treatment with Beta blockade and Thiamazole before the diagnosis can be confirmed biochemically.

Abstract Background Metformin associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is a serious adverse event with a high mortality rate of 30–50%. Early recognition of MALA and timely starting treatment may reduce its morbidity and mortality. Objective The aim of this study was to explore clinical parameters to identify patients with MALA in patients with suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis in the emergency department ED. Setting A retrospective single centre study was conducted at the Deventer Teaching Hospital in the Netherlands. Method Patients with lactate concentration > 4.0 mmol/l admitted at the ED between 2010 and 2017 with suspected sepsis or confirmed MALA and referred to the Intensive Care Unit were included. Baseline characteristics (pH, lactate, creatinine and CRP) of MALA patients were compared with patients with suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis. Creatinine and lactate concentration were selected as potential relevant parameters. Main outcome measure Sensitivity and specificity of the highest tertiles of the creatinine and the lactate concentrations separately, in combination, and both combined with metformin use, were calculated. Results Thirteen MALA and 90 suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis patients were included. Lactate (14.7 vs 5.9 mmol/l, p < 0.01) and creatinine concentration (642 vs 174 μmol/l, p < 0.01) were significantly higher in the MALA group and arterial pH (7.04 vs 7.38, p < 0.01) and CRP (90 vs 185 mg/l, p < 0.01) were significantly lower. The combined parameters lactate ≥ 8.4 mmol/l, creatinine ≥ 256 μmol/l had a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 95% for identifying MALA in suspected sepsis induced lactic acidosis patients in the ED. When combined with metformin use the specificity increased to 99%. Conclusion When managing lactic acidosis in the ED the diagnosis MALA should be considered in patients with a creatinine concentration ≥ 256 μmol/l and lactate concentration ≥ 8.4 mmol/l.

La condizione lavorativa femminile è sempre stata un tasto dolente, da qualsiasi punto di vista la si guardi: demografico, politico, economico, sociale e così via. Negli ultimi anni, nonostante le politiche attuate sia a livello governativo che aziendale, il Giappone rimane uno dei paesi appartenenti all’OECD con il maggior tasso di disparità di genere nel lavoro, così come nella società. Come se non bastasse, il Giappone si trova ad affrontare altre problematiche sociali correlate a tali divergenze di genere. Il crescente tasso di anzianità, collegato alla sempre più preoccupante diminuzione delle nascite e al crollo della forza lavoro disponibile sono problemi ormai irrimandabili. Recentemente, sono stati numerosi gli studiosi che hanno suggerito la necessità di concentrarsi sulla figura delle donne giapponesi come possibile fonte di soluzione a questi dilemmi. Il rimandare il matrimonio e la creazione di una famiglia per poter raggiungere una carriera pari a quella dei colleghi uomini, fa sì che gli anni per generare figli diminuiscano e così il numero medio di figli per coppia. La diminuzione di bambini rende il Giappone una popolazione sempre più vecchia, mentre la tendenza delle lavoratrici a lasciare il lavoro dopo il matrimonio o la nascita dei figli per l’impossibilità di conciliare lavoro e famiglia, porta ad una carenza di forza lavoro. Al fine di comprendere cosa ha generato tali tendenze e di individuare nuove soluzioni per migliorarle, è necessario porsi numerose domande, che saranno oggetto di questo elaborato. Ritengo che sia di basilare importanza comprendere le radici che hanno portato all’evoluzione di questa condizione sociale al fine di trovare soluzioni più mirate ed efficaci. Inoltre, l’esamina delle politiche tentate in precedenza, con particolare focus sulla recente Womenomics proposta nel 2012 dal primo ministro, è necessaria al fine di capire non solo gli sforzi del governo giapponese, ma anche a quali punti tali sforzi siano stati rivolti e cosa invece è stato tralasciato. In seguito, lo studio approfondito dell’attuale condizione femminile, non solo tramite testi letterari, ma anche tramite statistiche e ricerche del governo giapponese, aiuta a comprendere ciò che le donne giapponesi stesse considerano un limite alla propria realizzazione, in particolare riguardo alla possibilità di ottenere pari opportunità lavorative e al contempo mantenere una famiglia. Infine, ritengo sia importante portare un caso pratico per evidenziare maggiormente ciò che le precedenti leggi hanno modificato e cosa invece è rimasto invariato nel campo aziendale. Il caso presentato sarà relativo alla condizione femminile all’interno della catena di grandi magazzini Seibu-Sogo, a sua volta confrontato con i dati relativi alla condizione femminile in un’altra azienda nello stesso settore, ossia Isetan-Mitsukoshi.

Capital-intensive military test and evaluation facilities that are governed within the public entity domain need to deliver effective and efficient services in meeting or exceeding the Department of Defence's requirements and in retaining strategic defence capabilities and technologies. Various business and operational processes currently exist in these facilities, without any common quality assurance, control and performance management systems. The primary objective of this study was to develop an integrated service excellence model in order to obtain and continuously improve service excellence in the services provided by these strategic military test and evaluation facilities, ensuring that all activities necessary to design, develop and implement a test and evaluation service are effective and efficient. In order to develop an integrated service excellence model, various management tools and approaches to improve quality in the search for service excellence were identified and described. Total Quality Management (TQM), Business Process Re-engineering (BPR), the South African Excellence Model (SAEM) and the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), amongst other productivity and quality models, were researched and evaluated and tested through an empirical study conducted at the various test and evaluation facilities. Financial, human resources and environmental challenges facing the facilities in obtaining service excellence within the boundaries of public governance were explored in order to build the solutions to these challenges into the integrated service excellence model. Effective and efficient deployment of the facilities' resources, as well as the development and incorporation of safety, health and environmental policies and management standards were discussed and measured against national legislation. Applicable military, industrial and commercial quality standards and specifications, such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) quality management standards and the Republic of South Africa (RSA) military standards, were explored as the burden is on the facilities not only to obtain official accreditation to render specific test and evaluation services, but also to maintain accreditation and to execute the services against these standards. As corporate governance is a multi-faceted subject impacting on economic efficiency and shareholder's welfare, much emphasis was placed on governance principles through the identification of a framework and governance objectives in which the test and evaluation facilities operate. Good governance characteristics, such as discipline, transparency, independence, accountability, responsibility, fairness and social responsibility, were identified through the King 2 Report. This study was conducted amongst senior and top management of the test and evaluation facilities and amongst members of the Department of Defence through an interviewer-administered questionnaire comparing information and data on theory on service excellence, quality management, performance management, governance principles with the interviewer-questionnaire responses to performance indicators at these facilities. Management perceptions and management recommendations contributed to the development of the integrated service excellence model as well as to the future implementation of the model. It was evident through the study that no such integrated model exists to address the test and evaluation needs of the Department of Defence.

Objective: To retrospectively evaluate intravenous antifungal medications in paediatric patients in a public hospital for children.Method: Data relevant to the antifungal prescription were collected for all the patients <18 years of age who had been prescribed IV antifungal therapy. All paediatric patients prescribed intravenous antifungal treatment for one year (July 2006 to 30th June 2007) at PMH were evaluated retrospectively. The data collected were evaluated against the Australian Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic Version 13 and hospital in house guidelines for IV antifungal therapy from the microbiology department at the hospital.Results: There were 59 patients included in the study and the most frequently diagnosed disease was leukemia. Of the total 59 patients, liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) was prescribed for 47 patients, conventional amphotericin B (C-AmB) for four patients, caspofungin for two patients and voriconazole for one patient. Five patients received combination antifungals. The dose of C-AmB was 1 mg/kg/day. Voriconazole dose of 5 mg/kg/day was given for a period of four days for one patient. Nine patients included in this study were neonates and they were prescribed L-AmB, C-AmB and a combination of Voriconazole and L-AmB. 34 patients out of 47 were prescribed 3mg/kg/day of L-AmB and the highest L-AmB dose prescribed was 5 mg/kg/day and the lowest dose was 1 mg/kg/day. The median number of days for L-AmB treatment was found to be 11 days and the maximum was 51 days. Additionally 6% of patients who received L-AmB had oral fluconazole recommended r five days after cessation of L-AmB. It was found that 27% of patients had a low potassium level and a significantly higher proportion of patients had abnormal alanine aminotransferase and 11(18.6%) of the 59 patients had abnormal serum creatinine levels. It was found that the mean temperature decreased to 37.0°C from a 38.3°C from commencement to the cessation of the IV antifungal treatment. The longest duration of antifungal treatment in this study period was L-AmB prescribed for a period of 102 days.The estimated treatment cost for the longest treatment in this study was found to be AUD 34,222 if prepared in the pharmacy (CIVAS) and AUD 43,784 if prepared in the ward setting. Estimated total treatment cost for a four year old patient with a bodyweight of 21 kg on L-AmB for a period of 21 days was found to be AUD 7,803 when prepared in Pharmacy (CIVAS) and AUD 12,029 for Ward reconstitution.Conclusion: The data from this study indicated a satisfactory quality of IV antifungal treatment; however the remaining requirements for appropriate use required additional education. This study found that L-AmB was the antifungal agent of choice. Considerable savings could be made for pharmacy reconstituted IV antifungals by CIVAS over a ward setting where wastage occurs from unused antibiotic vials. At present the understanding of newer antifungal agents in children is limited. In future children should be included in the studies of new antifungal drugs and combination therapy and stratify the results by age, given the potential differences in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, efficacy and safety and cost.

A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN examines the Kennedy Administration’s contribution to the restoration of public education in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and determines if those actions support the dominant narrative of Kennedy’s overall civil rights record – a historical assessment generally generated from a few acute crises. For five consecutive years (1959-1964), in defiance of federal court orders, the county board of supervisors refused to levy taxes to operate public schools, marking Prince Edward County as the only locale in the nation without free public education. The county leadership organized a segregated private school system for the 1,400 white children, but afforded no formal education for the 1,700 African American students. The Kennedy Administration inherited the Prince Edward County school situation – a crisis that threatened to cripple a generation, and, if replicated, destroy public education. In the Prince Edward County school dilemma, the Kennedy Administration took proactive measures, proved sympathetic to the plight of African Americans, challenged Virginia’s congressional delegation, and appointed federal judges that supported President Kennedy’s civil rights agenda. The Prince Edward County story generally, and the federal government’s actions specifically, have been virtually overlooked by historians. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN challenges scholars to re-evaluate the Kennedy Administration’s civil rights record by including all of the civil rights events of the Kennedy years, thus developing a thorough, comprehensive assessment. A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN is the product of the study of unpublished archival documents, oral histories, interviews, newspaper reports, and secondary sources. The paper presents actual information based on resent data regarding human resources aspects at the hydroelectric construction project “Barragem do Baixo Sabor”, near Torre de Moncorvo, northern Portugal. Firstly, it aims to understand the background and history of Odebrecht and Bento Pedroso at the same time the reasons for their strategic alliance and jointure with Lena Construções SA. Moreover, identify and recognize the Portuguese civil construction industry including its challenges, taking for in account some key financial indicators regarding the hydroelectric construction. Most importantly, this thesis has the intention to obtain an overall idea on the topic of organizational culture, fully understanding the demographic structure that compromises the consortium. Analysis of HR practices; an overview of what is done regarding employee selection (job profile, employee professional education/experience, meritocracy, testing and unbiased hiring), talent development (a review of what is done regarding employee talent development in order to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage for the organization) and finally retention of talents within the consortium.
O texto apresenta informações reais, com base de dados recentes referentes a aspectos de Recursos Humanos no projecto de construção da hidroeléctrica "Barragem do Baixo Sabor", perto de Torre de Moncorvo, norte de Portugal. Em primeiro lugar, pretende-se compreender o fundo e a história da Odebrecht e Bento Pedroso. Ao mesmo tempo as razões da sua aliança estratégica com a Lena Construções, SA. Além disso, identificar e reconhecer a indústria da construção civil em Portugal, incluindo os seus desafios e tendo em conta alguns dos principais indicadores financeiros sobre a construção da hidroeléctrica. Mais importante, esta tese tem a intenção de mostrar um analise geral sobre o tema da cultura organizacional, tendo total compreensão da sua estrutura demográfica, que compromete o consórcio. Análise de práticas de RH no consorcio e um panorama do que é feito em relação à seleção dos empregados (experiência e educação profissional dos trabalhadores, meritocracia, ensaios e contratações imparciais), desenvolvimento de talentos (uma revisão do que é feito em relação a desenvolvimento e progresso profissional dos empregados para atingir e manter uma vantagem competitiva para a organização) e finalmente, retenção de talentos dentro da organização.

She has an abiding interest in women’s mental and reproductive health. In furtherance of those issues, she has testified against anti-abortion laws in state courts and the US Congress. She is past-President of the American Psychiatric Association.

Abstract This chapter starts by considering why Austin was invited to spend a semester in Berkeley, the lavish terms he was offered, and why he decided to take three members of his family with him. The impact of his seminars is described, as are his relations with members of the faculty and three Norwegian semanticists in the Department of Speech. Particular attention is paid to the different approaches to semantics taken by Austin and Arne Naess. The second half of the chapter investigates and reconstructs Austin’s work on sound symbolism. The reasons for Austin’s fascination with this topic are examined, and also its connections with his pre-war interest in Leibniz and Plato’s Cratylus.

Abstract This chapter is about the semester Austin spent at Harvard in the first half of 1955. It considers the members of the philosophy department, and then describes the impact of Austin’s personality and outlook, and what exactly was found so fresh and liberating in his approach. It is argued that the impact of America on Austin was less philosophical than social and cultural, and that, removed from the competitiveness and class-consciousness of Oxford, he seemed much more approachable and relaxed. The second half of the chapter outlines the theory espoused in his ‘How to Do Things with Words’ lectures, discussing the reasons for their diminishing audience, but also for their overall intellectual significance.

Abstract Duncan Sandys lobbied for Austin’s section to move back to central London, and on 12 November 1943 the section was renamed the Theatre Intelligence Section [TIS] and given the top floor of Peter Robinson’s department store in Oxford Circus. Here Austin was primarily occupied with processing data from the French Resistance, providing briefing material for commando raids, and considering the possibility of a landing in Norway. He was most concerned, however, with the Arromanches area of the French coast. This had already been chosen as one of the landing sites for D-Day, but there was a serious worry that the beach might rest on a bed of soft peat that would bog down vehicles. Every effort was made to discover whether this was a serious problem, and eventually it was decided that swimmers must be sent to reconnoitre the beach. Austin’s role in this operation is described in detail.

A 17-year-old boy presented to a local emergency department with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting starting earlier that morning. He reported being in good health all his life, but he had not seen a physician since moving with his family from Korea 10 years prior. Upon prompting, he mentioned experiencing excessive thirst, frequent urination, and decreased energy for the preceding 6 months. On admission his glucose was 443 mg/dL (24.6 mmol/L), sodium 125 mmol/L, chloride 90 mmol/L, bicarbonate 15.0 mmol/L, urine ketones ≥150 mg/dL, and pH 7.27. The patient was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and intravenous rehydration and insulin infusion were initiated.

A 52-year-old man with a past medical history of pancreatic cancer status postpartial pancreatectomy presented to the emergency department with nausea, vomiting, and hyperglycemic hyperosmotic syndrome (HHS) on November 2, 2013. Laboratory values included a blood glucose level of 928 mg/dL (51.5 mmol/L), calculated serum osmolality of 300 mOs/kg, negative serum and urine ketones, and a hemoglobin A1c of 12%. Glucose was easily corrected with intravenous (i.v.) fluids and i.v. insulin drip. The patient was transitioned to subcutaneous insulin injections of glargine 50 units twice daily and a lispro base dose of 6 units at meals with a correction factor (CF) of 1 units for every 25 mg/dL (1.4 mmol/L) of glucose >100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L).

Donald Blount is recognized around the world for his contributions to high-speed marine vehicles of various types for more than 50 years. A highlight of his career has been the revolutionary high-speed craft, DESTRIERO, which holds the combined east- and west-bound Atlantic crossing elapsed time record and the fastest east-bound crossing record for which its development history has been presented in numerous forums. An in-depth look at his career beyond this singular achievement will be shared in honor of his numerous contributions to the marine industry during his lifetime of bringing science and technology to the waterfront. Donald Blount began his formal career in 1954 as an intern at David Taylor Research Center while a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was hired by DTRC and worked in the model test basin and in the tests and trials branch. In 1959 he successfully tested into a naval architecture position. He concluded his degree in Mechanical Engineering at George Washington University in 1963. Also in 1963, Gene Clement and Donald published "Resistance Tests of a Systematic Series of Planing Hull Forms" in SNAME Transactions which concluded two years of testing in Tank 3 at DTRC and of the subsequent analysis of Model Series 62. He worked in Jacques Hadler's division conducting individual research and directing engineering programs relating to emerging technology in the field of hydrodynamics. He served as Project Engineer in the ship powering, small craft, propeller and full-scale trials branches. He volunteered and served two years as a civilian with NRDUV (Naval Research and Development Unit, Viet Nam) including being in Viet Nam during the summer of 1968. Throughout 1967 while acting as branch head, he received casualty reports from the field for trend monitoring. During his in-country tour in 1968, he personally participated in nine missions on the rivers of the Mekong Delta and offshore. Upon returning from his service he found that his position as Trials Branch Head at DTRC was no longer available and he chose to transfer to the Combatant Craft Engineering Department in Norfolk, Virginia as Technical Manager in 1969. He was responsible for planning, organizing and monitoring research and development programs for small craft and their systems. He also evaluated technological trends and selected promising approaches to achieve significant advances in performance. Department of Defense and other governmental agencies. He was promoted to Department Head in 1981 where he was responsible for design, engineering and testing of all non-commissioned navy craft. He supervised 80 government employees and an additional 45 contracted technical staff. The department developed contract plans and specifications used to procure navy boats and craft. He served as advisor to all levels of the Department of Defense on issues relating to state-of-the-art technologies required for producing high-speed small craft. Throughout his civil service tenure he maintained a small, private consulting practice for the recreational boating industry and when he retired from the Civil Service in 1990, he took his consulting practice full time as a naval architect and professional engineer providing hydrodynamic expertise with an emphasis on sea-keeping, propulsion, maneuvering, control and dynamic stability for high speed and special purpose commercial, military and recreational craft. Donald has published numerous papers and has received several honors in recognition of his contributions. He maintains several professional society memberships, is a professional engineer registered in Virginia and North Carolina and has professional interests including marine archaeology and the collection of antiquarian naval architectural books about boat and yacht design. He is currently writing a book regarding the technical design of small craft. An attempt is made here to present Donald's many contributions in bringing science and technology to the waterfront.

Study of Mongolian literature at St. Petersburg University began in the 19th century. In 1855, as part of the reorganization of Oriental studies in Russia, Faculty of Oriental Languages was transferred from Kazan to St. Petersburg. A. M. Pozdneev (1851–1920) was the first to systematically study Mongolian literature at the department. Academician B. Ya. Vladimirtsov (1884–1931) significantly developed and deepened research in the field of Mongolian literature. An outstanding academician S. A. Kozin (1879–1956) made a huge contribution to the study of Mongolian literature. From 1937 to 1976 T. A. Burdukova (1912–1987) taught at the Department of Mongolian Philology. In 1953, after completing her postgraduate studies at the Department of Mongolian Philology, L. K. Gerasimovich (1923–2015) began her teaching career. In 1987, M. P. Petrova (born 1964) was hired as an assistant at the Department of Mongolian Philology. For more than half a century of the existence of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies within the walls of St. Petersburg University, the Department of Mongolian Philology (later — department of Mongolian Studies and Tibetology) has developed a strong tradition of studying and teaching new and latest Mongolian literature. And today we can talk about the presence at St. Petersburg State University of its own scientific school of research into the history of the development of literature of the Mongolian-speaking peoples of the world.

The study was conducted at The Research Unit of the Department of Biology/College of Education for Pure Sciences/University of Mosul. The current study succeeded in finding an efficient protocol to produce genetically transformed vegetative branches of Helianthus annuus by direct injection with different densities of the bacterial inoculum of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and this was represented in inducing crown gall to cut the hypocotyls within (13-19) days of injection. The tumors formed on them were characterized by their rapid formation and expansion of their appearance to other unvaccinated sites that exceeded the crown gall in only thirteen days of infection. The genetic transformation callus derived from crown gall is its ability to grow and reproduce on the selective media containing Rifampicin and Gentamycin at a concentration of 40,100 mg / L, in addition to the ability of the vegetative branches resulting from crown gall to grow on the MSO medium Supported by the two antibiotics .The isolated DNA of genetically tissue was amplified by PCR. With specialized primers for the rol A gene, as the results of the electrophoresis on the agarose gel showed the separation of one band from each sample to represent the amplified segment of the rol A gene and matched the 308 bp molecular weight of the standard used prefixes. The results of the detection of (Octopine) in the tissues of crown gall arising and its callus showed a positive detection indicative of the separation of open spots at sites corresponding to the sites of the standard opines stains mentioned above.

Résumé :
Along with the increasing population in Indonesia, there has been an increase in domestic waste production. It is necessary to treat wastewater before it goes to the environment to prevent pollution of the environment. This research was conducted to investigate the potential of isolates A, B, and L from the Biology Department Universitas Negeri Malang as a bacterial consortium in decomposing domestic waste with the aerobic system to remove Chemical Oxygen Demand using a batch system. Experimental trials were carried out using synthetic domestic waste with variations in bacterial formulation treatments and starter doses. The results show that a more stable COD reduction performance was obtained in the batch test process. Sequentially, the COD reduction data efficiency includes B 20% (88.65%), L 20% (84.2%), A 10% (80%), A 20% (79.92%), ABL 10% (72.3%), B 10% (25.67%), ABL 20% (-10.87%), with the greatest efficiency occurring in the L10% treatment at 89.76%. The genotype analysis shows that A, B, and L isolates were identified as Alcaligenes ammonioxydans

This paper addresses the experience, knowledge, and expertise that Duratek has acquired while performing environmental remediation at two large low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) disposal facilities in the United States. Environmental remediation and related waste disposal has been the company’s primary line of business line since it was founded in 1969. It has disposed of more than half of the low-level radioactive waste generated in the U.S. over the past thirty years, working with almost every radioactive waste generator in the country. That experience has allowed the company to develop a unique understanding of safe, efficient, and cost-effective LLRW disposal methods. The paper also tracks the history of waste disposal technology at the Barnwell Disposal Site in South Carolina and the U.S. Department of Energy Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF) at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In particular, it describes the evolution of trench design, operations, and disposal procedures for these facilities. It also discusses the licensing of one the most active waste disposal sites in the U.S., the success of which has been assured to customers and stake-holders because of: • Well trained personnel who are dedicated to the design, construction and operation of safe and efficient disposal facilities; • Commitment to strong community relations; • Comprehensive knowledge of proven disposal strategies, technologies, and management practices; • Capability and readiness to respond rapidly to routine and emergency situations; • Established record of comprehensive and responsive communications with regulatory authorities; • Commitment to quality, compliance and personnel health, and safety; and • Financial systems that ensure long-term facilities management.

ABSTRACT Background: Pityriasis versicolor or Tinea versicolor is a skin disease caused by the Malassezia furfur which is often found in Indonesia. People can use anti-fungal drugs to treat this disease. However, long-term use of anti-fungal drugs is relatively more expensive and can have side effects for its users. Cocoa bean husk contains flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids which have anti-fungal effects. This study aimed to determine the antifungal effectiveness of the cocoa bean husk extract on the growth of M. furfur. Subjects and Methods: This was an experimental study using cocoa bean husk extract with a concentration variance of 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, with a positive control for ketoconazole 2% and a negative control using distilled water. The test was carried out by the well diffusion method using Sabouraud Dextrose Agar media. The inhibition of fungal growth was calculated by looking at the clear zone formed after 48 hours. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Post hoc Mann Whitney statistical tests. Results: The mean diameter of the inhibition zone at a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% was 3.42 mm, 4.07 mm, 4.9 mm, and 7.3 mm, respectively, and it was statistically significant (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Cocoa bean husk extract has weak anti-fungal effectiveness at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%, while at 100% it has moderate effectiveness. A laboratory experiment was carried out in one of the laboratories of the horticulture department, college of agriculture, Al-qadisiya university, during the spring season of the year 2023, with the aim using environmentally friendly natural materials instead of chemical fertilizers and studying their effect as fertilizer for chickpea plant (cricer arietinum L). Acomplete randomized design (CRD) was used with three replications and one factors, as the treatments included (T1 control distilled water, T2 banana peels fertilizer, T3 eggs shell fertilizer and T4 mixture of two fertilizers. Results showed that the treatment of the plant with mixture natural fertilizer gave agood result compared to the control treatment 100% ,while it gave the lowest germination rate when the control treatment 91.6 % without significant differences.The results were also the highest in the number of branching of the root of the seedling and in the same treatment 18.6 branch ,while the comparison treatment gave the lowest number of branch and reached 14.3 branch without significant differences .the length of the root stock and feather ,its dry weight and the strength of the seedling also had the highest rates when theT4 treatment reached 12.1 cm ,4cm ,0.299 mg .0.322 mg and 1.7000 respectively ,with significant differnces ,while the rates were lower when the control (T1 treatment )the comparison an ounted to 5.5 cm ,2.3 cm 0.142 mg 0.133 mg and 726.0 resectively

Susceptibility of a number of factors were tested in the stage of propagation of the lemon balm plant Melissa officinalis under controlled conditions in the laboratory of plant tissue, Horticulture and Gardening department , Agriculture college, Karbala university, shoots culture of Melissa were received from planting the ends of the branches with a length one cm on MS medium that have been prepared with different concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0) mg l-1 of adenine sulfate and (0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0) mg l-1 of benzyl adenine with fixed con. 0.5 mg l-1 of IBA, The rooting experiment included the cultivation of vegetative branches with a length of two cm obtained from the multiplication stage on a nutrient medium prepared for rooting, which includes different con. (20, 30, 40) g/l of sucrose and (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) mg l-1 of IBA with a constant conc 0.5 mg l-1 IBA, results indicated that superiority of adenine sulfate at conc one mg l-1 in investigation the top average length of vegetative branches was 5.40 cm, while the con. two mg l-1 was superior in achieving the highest average of shoot number, fresh and dry weight of total shoot was 31.75 branches plant-1, 4.51 and 0.95 mg consecutively, and about the influence of BA on the average of the studied traits of the vegetative group, it was superior at the conc two mg l-1 in achieving the highest average length of branches and dry weight of total vegetative was 3.61 cm. and 0.80 mg consecutively. Whereas the con. of 3 mg l-1 achieved the highest average branches number and the fresh weight of the vegetative total was 30.24 branches plant-1 and 4.19 mg, respectively, and on the effect of sucrose on the studied root traits characteristics, the conc 40 g l-1 exceeded in height average, roots number, wet and dry weight of rooting group reached 4.00 cm and 27.03 roots branches-1 , 2.35 and 0.57 mg respectively, as the results indicated the superiority of the IBA with a conc of 1 mg . l-1 in the mean root mean rate was 4.00 cm, 24.66 roots branches-1, 2.34 and 0.51 mg, respectively.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is developing a vehicle approval scheme to enable the safe and secure deployment of fully automated vehicles in Great Britain. This project developed proposals for administrative, procedural and technical requirements for all technical aspects which do not relate to the automated driving system (ADS). A proposal for the categorisation of fully automated vehicles was developed during the course of the project in collaboration with the Department. For M-/N-category vehicles the proposal included new sub-categories for dual mode (driven manually and by ADS) and single mode (driven by ADS only) vehicles. A new category was proposed for single mode Low Speed Automated Vehicles (LSAVs). For L-category vehicles a new category was proposed for fully automated single mode vehicles exclusively designed for the carriage of goods only. Proposals for pre-deployment, non-ADS technical requirements and test procedures were developed, as far as possible, by application and modification of existing technical regulations within the existing M-/N- and L-category framework regulations. Also developed were proposals for an outline approval process and modifications to the in-use regulations, e.g. Construction and Use. Also, a two- stage stakeholder consultation was performed to solicit views on the proposals and refine them. Finally aspects which require further consideration were collated for the Department’s attention.

The Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) is a cornerstone of the non-proliferation architecture for missiles and other uncrewed aerial vehicles. However, geopolitical and technical developments and operational challenges threaten the regime’s effectiveness and create a need for reform in several areas. The MTCR partners should develop a clear strategy for determining if and how to expand MTCR membership. To increase the number of adherents, partners should pursue reinforced outreach and expand and promote the benefits offered. By improving the transparency of its procedures and deliberations, the regime can make them more understandable for non-partners. The partners can also improve the MTCR’s legitimacy by emphasizing that it provides public goods and helps states to meet their international obligations. The regime can also address the challenges of emerging technologies by focusing on technical deliberations and sharing information and good practices. Through all this, the MTCR must ensure its continued functioning in the face of geopolitical tensions and armed conflict between partners. This SIPRI Report is the final output of the SIPRI research project ‘Quo Vadis MTCR: The Missile Technology Control Regime at a Crossroads’, co-funded by the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign for Foreign Affairs and the German Federal Foreign Office. It provides a comprehensive analysis of current challenges to the MTCR and provides extensive policy recommendations to the MTCR partners.
