Résumé :
More and more high dams with huge reservoirs have been built in China in recent years. A lot of research work on the causes of cracking in galleries of low concrete dams has been carried out at present, while studies on that of high concrete dams are less with the lack of systematic cognition. Based on that, the research on high concrete dams is conducted in this paper, using the method of finite element simulation. It is proven that self-weight action has more influence on the stress of arch crests of galleries existing in high concrete dams, especially the galleries whose overlying concrete height is relatively high. And surface cracks tend to appear in arch crests of these galleries under gravity. In the end, measures for improvement of the stress of arch crest are put forward, of which the effect of enlarging reinforcement is relatively obvious.

Résumé :
Monitoring data of the arch crown dam section of the Geheyan concrete gravity arch dam were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The analysis results show that the measured data and year changes of the dam horizontal displacement are small, the influence of the water level and temperature on the arch crown dam section is normal, the influence of the aging on the dam horizontal displacement is little, and the aging component has become stable. Therefore, it can be shown that the arch crown dam section of the Geheyan concrete gravity dam is in elastic state, and the horizontal displacement is accord with general deformation law of concrete arch dams.

Résumé :
The construction of double-curvature arch dams is an attractive solution from an economic viewpoint due to the reduced volume of concrete necessary for their construction as compared to conventional gravity dams. Due to their complex geometry, many criteria have arisen for their design. However, the most widespread methods are based on recommendations of traditional technical documents without taking into account the possibilities of computer-aided design. In this paper, an innovative software tool to design FEM models of double-curvature arch dams is presented. Several capabilities are allowed: simplified geometry creation (interesting for academic purposes), preliminary geometrical design, high-detailed model construction, and stochastic calculation performance (introducing uncertainty associated with material properties and other parameters). This paper specially focuses on geometrical issues describing the functionalities of the tool and the fundamentals of the design procedure with regard to the following aspects: topography, reference cylinder, excavation depth, crown cantilever thickness and curvature, horizontal arch curvature, excavation and concrete mass volume, and additional elements such as joints or spillways. Examples of application on two Spanish dams are presented and the results obtained analyzed.

Résumé :
A better understanding of the dynamic behaviour of dams requires strong-motion instrumentations. In particular, it is necessary to observe the free-field motions at the dam sites and the effective motions along the abutments, and to determine the dynamic properties of dams and their response to severe earthquakes. Instrumentation schemes are developed for arch dams, gravity dams and embankment dams, considering specific observational needs and objectives. The technical specifications to be satisfied by the accelerographs and the arrays are developed. Four arrays, which have been installed in Swiss dams ranging in height from 120 to 285 m, for a total of 29 triaxial accelerographs, are also presented. Key words: earthquakes, strong motions, instrumentation, accelerographs, dams.

Résumé :
Dams considered as one if very important infrastructure, they are lifeline structures and have a vital role our economics and social life. A concrete gravity dam is one of wide used dam worldwide, it constructed from reinforced concrete and his typical cross section is triangular, the other type is arch section. A gravity dam can be combined with an arch dam into an arch-gravity dam for areas with massive amounts of water flow but less material available for a purely gravity dam. The inward compression of the dam by the water reduces the lateral (horizontal) force acting on the dam. Thus, the gravitation force required by the dam is lessened, i.e. the dam does not need to be so massive. The aim of this paper is to obtain a preliminary post analysis for an arch gravity dam by considering of typical applied loads that effects on it. In order to check and verify the dam and ensure the assumptions used during this process, the dam is analysed in different type of major effects such as own weight, water pressure, temperature and static load intertie generated from seismic load. These loads are presented in this paper in different cases, totally five cases combined between all these factors as explain in details in the section of methodology. To achieve the target of this study, modelling of an arch dam, reservoir and foundation provided by finite element using software ANSYS. An arch dam with height of 41.5 m is studied in this paper to simulate the reality of the future dam that will be erected as accurate as possible. The response of the dams is represented by the maximum displacement of it and also the stresses in each case. The results of all analysis were compared in the five cases mentioned above to determine the impact of each case as well as the worst case affecting the safety of the dam.

Résumé :
Reliability analysis is an emerging field of structural engineering which is very significant in structures of great importance like arch dams, large concrete dams etc. The research objective is to design and construct a new method for the analysis of the system reliability of dam. The failure paths are searched out after failure mode and composite performance functions are set. Bayes formula and Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality are adopted to deduce the upper limit of failure probabilities in some failure modes that can obtain the failure probability of system of dam. A test example is given to verify this method. Compared with other conventional algorithm, this method has the strong points: more failure paths are considered and more safety methods are used to estimate the system reliability of dam.

These specimens are of three kinds: body specimens, layer-treated specimens and layer-untreated specimens and the tests include direct shear and triaxial compressive-compressive-shear, tensile-compressive-shear tests. The shear strength of three kinds of specimens under different stress states is analyzed systematically. By regression of the tests results, respective failure criterions for RCC under different combined loads are proposed.

The vast distribution and long duration of the Late Mesozoic magmatism in the eastern part of South China presents a unique case in the world. This offers a natural laboratory to study the process of magma genesis, the magma emplacement mode, the relationship between magmatism and tectonics, the geodynamic role on the magma emplacement and lithospheric evolution. Since 50's, particularly 90's of the last century, geoscientists have made important efforts in geological cartography and carried out numerous studies with remarkable scientific achievements, building a solid background to understand the tectonic evolution of the South China Block (SCB). However, certain fundamental questions mentioned above remain unsolved and/or are in hot debate. In order to make progress in these scientific issues, we have carried out in a multi-disciplinary study in the Late Mesozoic Qingyang-Jiuhua massif, Hengshan massif and Fujian coastal zone according to their distance with respect to the paleo subduction zone of the Paleo-Pacific plate, the ages of granitic massifs and related tectonics, including field observation on the structure geology, micro-observation on thin section, U-Pb dating on monazite, AMS, paleomagnetism, gravity modeling and P condition concern the granite emplacement. In the view of deformation in these granitic massifs and their country rocks, mode and influence of regional tectonics on the emplacement, though each studied zone reveals its distinguished characteristics, they show some intrinsic and common relationships between them. With our new results and integrating previous data, in this thesis, we discuss the tectonic context of emplacement of these Late Mesozoic magmatic massifs and the geodynamic evolution of the SCB., We propose a 3-step geodynamic model: (1) during 145-130 Ma period, the Paleo-Pacific plate subducted northwestwardly, the West Philippines micro-continent, approaching to SCB, important subduction-related arc volcanism was produced in the coastal areas of Southeast China coast (Zhejiang-Fujian-Guangdong), forming a back-arc extension tectonic system in SCB; (2) during 130-110 Ma period, due to the collision between the West Philippines microcontinent and SCB, the compressional tectonic structures were developed in the Changle-Na'ao coastal zone, producing ductile deformation zones. However, the inland of the eastern part of SCB was under a NW-SE extensional tectonic regime; (3) during 105-90 Ma period, a new subduction zone was developed in the SE flank of the West Philippines micro-continent, the subducting slab reached the Changle-Nan'ao tectonic belt, with the possible break-off of slab, the asthenospheric ascent was responsible for the important emplacement of plutonic massifs and dykes. The tectonics of the eastern part of SCB was characterized by a general extensional system in this period. This tectonic pattern has been significantly disturbed by the Oligocene-Eocene opening of the South China sea,and the Miocene shortening of the SCB margin in Taiwan. Of course, this model should be improved by more geological, geophysical and geochemical investigations.

Résumé :
Dams are built for a variety of purposes including hydropower generation, irrigation, water supply, and flood mitigation. Concrete and earth dams are common types of dams in Sri Lanka. Concrete dams can be categorized as Gravity dams and Arch dams. Gravity dams are most common in Sri Lanka. Dams can also pose safety hazards. Failure of a dam can cause serious damages to both people and property downstream. One of the major threats to dams is earthquakes. They can have significant impacts on the stresses within the dams. In extreme cases this can cause even failures of dams. These possibilities can be investigated using finite element analysis. In this study Rantambe and Moragahakanda concrete gravity dams were selected for 2-D finite element analysis under the action of suitable earthquakes. For each case linear time history analysis was performed using SAP2000 software. The stresses were examined for potential failures. Important considerations in this process were selection of dams, selection of suitable earthquake records, and identification of an appropriate failure criterion. The selection of earthquake records was based on proximity and geological conditions. Koyna earthquake was used to develop suitable earthquake loadings. Peak ground acceleration was varied from 0.05g to 0.15g. Westergaard method was used to assign hydrodynamic loads. Coulomb-Mohr criterion was employed to investigate potential failures in concrete. Stresses in dam models during the earthquakes was scrutinized for potential failures. Significant stress increases were observed in some areas of the dams. These critical areas and corresponding values of earthquake parameters were identified. It was concluded that the dams were unlikely to suffer material failures under earthquake loads even with a peak ground acceleration of 0.1g (which is the value recommended for use for critical structures in the areas concerned). Résumé :
The purpose of this paper is to show equivalence between continuum and discrete formulations in sensitivity analysis when a linear velocity field is used. Shape sensitivity formulations are presented when the body forces and surface tractions depend on shape design variables. Especially, the continuum-discrete (C-D) and discrete-discrete (D-D) approaches are compared in detail. It is shown that the two methods are theoretically and numerically equivalent when the same discretization, numerical integration, and linear design velocity fields are used. The accuracy of sensitivity calculation is demonstrated using a cantilevered beam under uniform pressure and an arch dam crown cantilever under gravity and hydrostatic loading at the upstream face of the structure. It is shown that the sensitivity results are consistent with finite difference results, but different from the analytical sensitivity due to discretization and approximation errors of numerical analysis.

Résumé :
Abstract While Steel Lazy Wave Risers (SLWRs) are an attractive riser system from wave fatigue perspective in deep waters, it has recently been found that they can be susceptible to fatigue from slugging. Slugging may occur under certain combination of gas and liquid rates for multiphase (oil-gas-water) flow. For a given flow rate, the magnitude of slugging fatigue is a function of the SLWR shape, i.e., length and location of the hog bend that is created by the buoyancy modules, as well as the length of the lower catenary. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to optimize the SLWR shape against slugging fatigue. The first step was to generate candidate riser shapes by varying key geometrical parameters for SLWR, which included the hang-off angle, length of the buoyancy, and the location of the buoyancy. For this purpose, an automated riser design tool was developed in the intelligent Deepwater Advanced Solutions Hub. This produced several hundred SLWR shapes. Static strength analysis and dynamic wave fatigue analysis were performed for all these shapes, and the shapes that passed both criteria were selected for slugging fatigue analysis. Slugging fatigue consists of first running the flow assurance software Olga which produced time series of mixture density at each riser node. This spatial and temporal density data was used to compute gravity loads due to slug flow (centrifugal and Coriolis forces were found to be negligible), which were fed into the OrcaFlex software as an external load. Time domain dynamic analysis was performed and results post- processed to compute fatigue as well as extract stress time series at key locations for detailed assessment and sense checks. All these steps were coded in a Python module with parallel running capability. This enabled running hundreds of cases in a few days. Slugging fatigue was combined with other sources of fatigue (wave, VIV, and installation) to select riser shapes that meet fatigue requirements. Results showed that the slugging fatigue can vary by up to a factor of 28 among various riser shapes for a given flow rate, demonstrating the value of shape optimization from slugging perspective. However, in scenarios involving sour service and production profiles with low flow rates causing severe slugging fatigue, even the optimized SLWR shape may require cladding or other solutions requiring further fatigue mitigation. It was found that a longer riser or a flatter arch gives higher slugging fatigue lives. Higher arch flatness alleviates long period slugging, which drives the slugging fatigue due to integral effect over the lower catenary, and increases fatigue life. Another interesting finding was that the shorter period slugging, which are due to local weight variations, provides an upper bound on slugging fatigue lives.
