Texte intégralAutonomous acquisition of representations and functionalities by a machine address several theoretical questions. Today’s autonomous robots are developed around a set of functionalities. Their representations of the world are deduced from the analysis and modeling of a given problem, and are initially given by the developers. This limits the learning capabilities of robots. In this thesis, we propose an approach and a system able to build open-ended representation and functionalities. This system learns through its experimentations of the environment and aims to augment a value function. Its objective consists in acting to reactivate the representations it has already learnt to connote positively. An analysis of the generalization capabilities to produce appropriate actions enable define a minimal set of properties needed by such a system. The open-ended representation system is composed of a network of homogeneous processing units and is based on position coding. The meaning of a processing unit depends on its position in the global network. This representation system presents similarities with the principle of numeration by position. A representation is given by a set of active units. This system is implemented in a suite of software called NeuSter, which is able to simulate million unit networks with billions of connections on heterogeneous clusters of POSIX machines. .

Texte intégralN this work we give a precise definition of large scale audio identification. In particular, we make a distinction between exact and approximate matching. In the first case, the goal is to match two signals coming from one same recording with different post-processings. In the second case, the goal is to match two signals that are musically similar. In light of these definitions, we conceive and evaluate different audio-fingerprint models

Texte intégralElectrophysiology experiments has for long relied upon small cohorts of subjects to uncover statistically significant effects of interest. However, the low sample size translates into a low power which leads to a high false discovery rate, and hence a low rate of reproducibility. To address this issue means solving two related problems: first, how do we facilitate data sharing and reusability to build large datasets; and second, once big datasets are available, what tools can we build to analyze them ? In the first part of the thesis, we introduce a new data standard for sharing data known as the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS), and its extension MEG-BIDS. Next, we introduce the reader to a typical electrophysiological pipeline analyzed with the MNE software package. We consider the different choices that users have to deal with at each stage of the pipeline and provide standard recommendations. Next, we focus our attention on tools to automate analysis of large datasets. We propose an automated tool to remove segments of data corrupted by artifacts. We develop an outlier detection algorithm based on tuning rejection thresholds. More importantly, we use the HCP data, which is manually annotated, to benchmark our algorithm against existing state-of-the-art methods. Finally, we use convolutional sparse coding to uncover structures in neural time series. We reformulate the existing approach in computer vision as a maximuma posteriori (MAP) inference problem to deal with heavy tailed distributions and high amplitude artifacts. Taken together, this thesis represents an attempt to shift from slow and manual methods of analysis to automated, reproducible analysis

Texte intégralThe present research aims to model learning processes on Learning ManagementSystems (LMS) in a bid to maximize users’ efficiency. We came about this idea whilethinking over the possible ways of facilitating the use of LMS for teachers and learnersin countries affected by the digital divide. Drawing from that, the following question hasbeen stated: in a given learning context, how can we insert a Learning ManagementSystem that provides users with both easy handling and optimal using conditions? Thisissue raises the problem of LMS adaptability and suggests two levels of modeling: thelearning tool on one hand and the planned context of use on the other. To address thisissue of adaptability, we adopt a two-pronged approach including the functionalanalysis of LMS tools and the reengineering of user interfaces. The first step is todevelop an approach for the analysis of teaching and learning processes on LMS. Thisentails modeling common learning situations and cross-checking them with thefeatures available in LMS solutions. This preliminary work enabled to build a formalismfor LMS analysis which is referred to as the OCGPI approach (Organize-Collaborate-Guide-Produce-Inform). The second step proposes an adaptive reengineering of LMSbased on the context of use. This is namely an embedded configurator which adaptsthe working environment according to each use and each user. This tool aims at givingbeginners the possibility of acquainting themselves quickly with the virtual platform

Texte intégralMacular degeneration (MD) is a common visual disorder in the aging population characterized by a loss of central vision, reduced visual acuity contrast sensitivity, and increased crowding. This impairment strongly affects the quality of life and personal autonomy. There is currently no cure for AMD, available treatment options are only able to slow down the disease, and even palliative treatments are rare. After the emergence of the central scotoma, patients with MD develop one or more eccentric fixation areas - preferred retinal loci (PRLs) - that are used for fixation, reading, tracking, and other visual tasks that require finer ocular abilities. The final goal of the project was to investigate and to improve the residual visual abilities in the PRL. Four studies were conducted in total. Study 1 was conducted in MD patients to investigate whether after the emergence of the scotoma, the PRL acquire enhanced abilities in the processing of the visual information through spontaneous or use-dependent adaptive plasticity. Study 2 aimed to assess the effects of a single administration of transcranial random noise electrical stimulation (tRNS), a subtype of non-invasive transcranial electrical stimulation, on the spatial integration in the healthy visual cortex. Study 3 aimed to assess the between session effect of daily repeated tRNS coupled with perceptual training. The objective of study 4 was to translate the previous findings into a clinically applicable treatment approach by combining tRNS and perceptual training in adult patients with MD. Contrary to previous results, we found neither a phenomenon of spontaneous nor use-dependent cortical plasticity undergoing in the PRL before the training. We also found that the tRNS was able to modulate the visuospatial integration in the early visual processing, promoting plastic changes in the stimulated network. Its effects were not limited to the short-term modulation but also produced a boosting of the learning in a crowding task. The final experiment showed that a combination of tRNS and perceptual training could result in greater improvements and larger transfer to untrained visual tasks in adults with MD than training alone. Overall, our results indicate that tRNS of the visual cortex has potential application as an additional therapy to improve vision in adults with bilateral central blindness
Nguyen, Thanh Hai. « Some contributions to deep learning for metagenomics ». Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUS102.
Texte intégralMetagenomic data from human microbiome is a novel source of data for improving diagnosis and prognosis in human diseases. However, to do a prediction based on individual bacteria abundance is a challenge, since the number of features is much bigger than the number of samples. Hence, we face the difficulties related to high dimensional data processing, as well as to the high complexity of heterogeneous data. Machine Learning has obtained great achievements on important metagenomics problems linked to OTU-clustering, binning, taxonomic assignment, etc. The contribution of this PhD thesis is multi-fold: 1) a feature selection framework for efficient heterogeneous biomedical signature extraction, and 2) a novel deep learning approach for predicting diseases using artificial image representations. The first contribution is an efficient feature selection approach based on visualization capabilities of Self-Organizing Maps for heterogeneous data fusion. The framework is efficient on a real and heterogeneous datasets containing metadata, genes of adipose tissue, and gut flora metagenomic data with a reasonable classification accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art methods. The second approach is a method to visualize metagenomic data using a simple fill-up method, and also various state-of-the-art dimensional reduction learning approaches. The new metagenomic data representation can be considered as synthetic images, and used as a novel data set for an efficient deep learning method such as Convolutional Neural Networks. The results show that the proposed methods either achieve the state-of-the-art predictive performance, or outperform it on public rich metagenomic benchmarks
