OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to verify from a school-based epidemiological survey, the prevalence of anterior open bite, analyzing the influence of pacifier habit in the school. METHODS: The first step was a questionnaire for the parents, and later clinical examinations in 237 school children, 3-14 years old, in the city of Santo Expedito do Sul/RS, Brazil. RESULTS: The population gender distribution was 50.3% boys and 49.4% girls with a mean age of 8.63 years, and 16% had primary dentition, 50.2% mixed dentition and 33.8 % permanent dentition. There was a 22.8% prevalence of anterior open bite, obtaining a significant association between anterior open bite and the pacifier sucking habit on the three dentitions. CONCLUSION: The duration and frequency of the habit were strongly associated with anterior open bite malocclusion in the deciduous and mixed dentitions.

Aim and objective: The objective of this in-vivo study was to evaluate toothwise and archwise sulcus depth in human primary, mixed and permanent dentition of Indian population.Method: The study included 40 subjects (22 males and 18 females) of an age range 4-25 years. Subjects were divided into 3 groups – the primary dentition (4-6 years) mixed dentition (7-13 years) and adult dentition (16-25 years). All the parameters were measured in upper and lower anterior segments.Results: Gingival sulcus depth (GSD) was measured archwise and toothwise in different dentitions and overall dentition wise without differentiating archwise and toothwise. GSD was significantly higher in maxillary mixed dentition (1.75±0.75) followed by permanent and primary dentition. In all the dentition, maxillary central incisor showed significant GSD.Conclusion: The sulcus depth is maximum in mixed dentition followed by primary and permanent dentitions and significantly higher in maxillary central incisor.

Aim: to analyze the prevalence of different definitions of functional dentition, prosthodontic status and associated factors, in an indigenous population from Brazil. Methods: a cross-sectional oral health survey was conducted with Indigenous adults aged 35-44 years. A single examiner collected clinical data through oral examinations and sociodemographic data using a structured questionnaire. Dentitions were classified according to four classification systems of functional dentition: FDWHO (> 20 teeth), FDGROUP2 (> 10 teeth in each arch), FDGROUP3 (all anterior teeth), and FDGROUP4 (> 10 teeth in each arch, all anterior teeth, and sufficient posterior region). Use and need of prosthodontics was also evaluated. Uni and multivariate analysis were conducted at the level of significance of 5%. Results: Indigenous adults presented considerably low frequencies of prosthodontic use and functional dentition, independently of the definition analyzed. Substantial differences of prevalence rates were observed among the four definitions of functional dentition, ranging from 48.62% to 11.93%. Age and municipality were associated with use of dental prosthesis and prosthodontic need, respectively. Significant discrepancies in functional dentition rates were observed regarding sex and time of the last dental appointment. Conclusions: Indigenous adults are severely affected by tooth loss and, consequently, by low frequencies of functional dentition. The scenario is worsened by the elevated need of the population for prosthodontics. The phenomenon was associated with age, sex, access to specialized dental care and time of the last dental visit.

Résumé :

Reduction of the anterior dentition (i.e. incisors and canines) is a major adaptative trait of the Rhinocerotidae among Perissodactyla. However, the corresponding evolutionary sequence was lacking a robust phylogenetic frame to support it thus far. Here, we describe a new Oligocene species of Rhinocerotinae, Mesaceratherium sp. nov. from the Swiss locality of Bumbach (MP25 reference level). In addition, we identify the only known complete mandible of Epiaceratherium magnum , an early-branching rhinocerotid, as well as one of the earliest European rhinoceroses. We also compute a parsimony analysis based on morpho-anatomical characters to assess their phylogenetic position and elucidate the early evolution of the Rhinocerotidae. Our results allow to propose a new scenario for the reduction of the anterior dentition in which upper and lower dentitions would have undergone distinct evolutionary trajectories.

Aim: To evaluate the association between the frequency of malocclusions in the anterior sextant with dentition type, age, and sex. Material and methods: A descriptive, transversal and prospective study was carried out, in a convenience sample of 200 patients between 3 and 14 years old, of both sexes who attended the pediatric dentistry clinic of Dentistry Faculty from Autonomous University of Tlaxcala, Mexico. A dentist was standardized by a direct method (k=0.998, p=0.0001). Results: Crossbite and edge to edge bite were the most frequent (18% and 17% respectively), in no case the alterations in the previous sextant were related to sex, except altered overjet with age and dentition type (likelihood ratio=18,169, p=0.0001) (X2=18.820, p=0.0001). Conclusion: These observations highlight the importance of the diagnosis of possible alterations in the occlusion of the anterior sextant in both dentitions, in order to preventatively avoid major sequelae.

The position of the upper first molar (UFM) is currently considered the “key of occlusion”. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the mesiorotated UFM, and its relationship with anterior dental crowding in mixed and permanent dentition. Intra-oral scans of upper dental arches of 180 subjects with mixed dentition and 169 subjects with permanent dentition were retrospectively analyzed to investigate the presence of UFM mesiopalatal rotation and presence of anterior crowding. The occlusal relationship and the presence of caries were also recorded. In subjects with permanent dentition, there was a statistically significant correlation between anterior crowding and UFM mesiopalatal rotation (Pearson’s chi-square = 9.03; p = 0.06). Among cases with permanent dentition, subjects with UFM mesiopalatal rotation showed an OR = 3.28 (95% CI = 0.99–10.93; p = 0.042) of moderate/severe anterior dental crowding, respect to subjects without UFM rotation. In subjects with mixed dentition, there was a statistically significant correlation between molar occlusal relationship and UFM mesiopalatal rotation (Pearson’s chi-square = 14.98; p = 0.002), and subjects with molar class II showed a OR = 10.2 (95% CI = 2.16–48.22; p = 0.0005) to present UFM mesiopalatal rotation, with respect to subjects with molar class I. UFM mesiopalatal rotation is associated to anterior dental crowding in permanent dentition, and to class II malocclusion in mixed dentition.

Successful orthodontic resolution of bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion depends on successful retraction of anterior dentition, which also involves acquiring proper buccolingual inclination and vertical position of anterior teeth. To fulfill these requirements, clinicians have devised numerous biomechanical and surgical orthodontic options. A palatal retractor for retraction of maxillary anterior dentition is the result of clinician’s long-time creative endeavors and an evolution of the biomechanical design. A palatal retractor splints the maxillary anterior dentition on the lingual side with bonded mesh plates connected by a supporting wire. Two long palatally extended arms are soldered to the supporting wire where adequate retraction force can be applied. Palatal retractors have several advantages over conventional bracket/wire systems. The two most prominent ones are biomechanical superiority and esthetic invisibility. As the palatal retractor is positioned on the lingual surface of the maxillary anterior dentition, it is not visible from the frontal view and since the anterior dentition retraction constitutes a significant portion of the total treatment time in extraction orthodontic treatment, it is a distinct esthetic advantage. Biomechanical disadvantage of the conventional bracket/wire system lies in its innate ineffectiveness of the torque and vertical control because of the long distance between the point of force application and the center of resistance of the anterior dentition. A combination of TADs and palatal retractors provides the possibility of maximizing control of both the torque and vertical position. This article aims to describe clinical considerations, applications, and results of palatal retractor use in clinical cases. Introduction: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a rare genetic disease affecting both dentitions. Factors such as age, socioeconomic status, dentition and AI type and severity should be taken into consideration in treatment planning. Aim: This retrospective study aimed to assess the survival rate of AI main restorative options and the effects of gender and dentition type. Methods: The study sample comprised 28 dental records of patients aged 5-17 years affected by AI (15 females, 13 males) and with anterior and/or posterior restoration in primary and/or permanent tooth/teeth. The fate of each restoration was classified into three categories: failed, withdrawn and censored and analyzed by the life table method of survival analysis. Results: Out of 233 restorations performed, the most frequently used restoration was preformed metal crowns (PMCs), followed by anterior composite, posterior composite, adhesive casting, Ketac fill and amalgam respectively. The two main restorations, PMCs and anterior composite were included in the statistical analysis. The survival rate of PMCs was significantly higher than anterior composite (p<0.001). The anterior composite restorations survived significantly longer in males (p<0.05). Females had significantly better survival rate of PMCs (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant effect of the operator group of restoration survival. Conclusion: The anterior composite restorations survived significantly longer in males and females had significantly better survival rate of PMCs than males.

Objective: To examine the sagittal maxillary growth during mixed and permanent dentition in patients with unoperated isolated cleft palate. Patients: A total of 41 patients with nonsyndromic unoperated isolated cleft palate, 16 with mixed dentition and 25 with permanent dentition. Main Outcome Measures: Cephalograms were analyzed to compare these patients with those with isolated cleft palate who had been repaired operatively as well with normal individuals. Results: The unoperated patients in mixed dentition showed reduced anterior-posterior length of the maxilla. In adults with unoperated isolated cleft palate with permanent dentition, the measurements showed maxillary retrusion as well as reduction in the anterior-posterior maxillary length. Conclusion: Sagittal growth of the maxilla appears to be inhibited in patients with unoperated isolated cleft palate, which became more severe with age.

A mesiodense is a most common supernumerary tooth which is one of the most significant dental anomalies at the primary and early mixed dentition stages. The reported prevalence of mesiodense in general population ranges between 0.15% to 1.9% and more frequently found in the permanent dentition but rarely found in primary dentition. Mesiodense are primarily responsible for eruption disturbances or delay of the maxillary anterior permanent teeth emergence. Therefore the dentists and parents are great concern about malocclusion and esthetic problems which is caused by mesiodense. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment of mesiodense is important to prevent further complications in permanent dentition. Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of anterior crossbite and to verify the effectiveness of the orthodontic appliance Inclined Plane in the correction of this malocclusion. Methods: The clinical examination was performed 702 children in the deciduous or mixed dentition of 7 schools and in those found the anterior crossbite was performed treatment with fixed Inclined Plane. Results: The prevalence of the anterior crossbite was 2.14%, characterizing 15 of the 702 children evaluated, of which 60% were female and 40% male, all of which were dental crossbites. Only 12 accepted the treatment with an average duration of 4.4 weeks. Conclusion: The prevalence of anterior crossbite was 2.14%. The inclined plane proved to be a viable and effective therapy in the correction of anterior crossbite. It is one of the options of the orthodontic treatment in patients in the deciduous or mixed dentition, propitiating greater possibility of dentoskeletal development, since the malocclusion is corrected. However this method needs to be correctly indicated and its execution technique rigorously followed.

This literature review aims to address the characteristics of normal dentition, as parameters for the diagnosis of malocclusions, emphasizing the benefits of preventive and interceptive orthodontic procedures to oral health. Preventive and interceptive measures of malocclusion can be done with simple procedures performed by the dentist, with positive and relevant effects on oral health. It is understood as preventive procedures, promotion of natural breast feeding, dental restorations, installation of space maintainers, suspension of harmful oral habits, allowing adequate functions of the stomatognathic system. The interceptive procedures include the correction of malocclusions in the primary or mixed dentition, preventing them from remaining in the permanente dentition, therefore, it allows redirecting facial Grow than drestoring functional balance. The dentist must have knowledge of the characteristics of normality of primary and mixed dentitions, as well as the etiology of malocclusions, which includes genetic and environmental factors or the interaction of both. Interceptor treatment should start as soon as possible, allowing it to take Advantage of the growth potential of the jaws and correct deleterious oral habits, correcting orofacial disharmony and restoring dental occlusion. It must be performed in cases of anterior open bite, anterior and posterior crossbites, maintenance and space recovery in the early loss of primary teeth. It was concluded that the preventive and interceptive procedures allow a balanced orofacial development and normal evolution of the occlusion, having a positive impacton oral health.

Among the commonly encountered dental irregularities which constitute developing malocclusion is the crossbite. During primary and mixed dentition phase, the crossbite is seen very often and if left untreated during these phases then a simple problem may be transformed into a more complex problem. Different techniques have been used to correct anterior and posterior crossbites in mixed dentition. This case report describes the use of hexa helix, a modified version of quad helix for the management of anterior crossbite and bilateral posterior crossbite in early mixed dentition. Correction was achieved within 15 weeks with no damage to the tooth or the marginal periodontal tissue. The procedure is a simple and effective method for treating anterior and bilateral posterior crossbites simultaneously.

Introduction. Open bite is a multifactorial phenomenon and no single factor can account for open-bite. Etiology plays an important role in diagnosis. Heredity, unfavorable growth patterns, incorrect jaw postoure, are the characteristics of skeletal open bite. Digit sucking. Depending on where the thumb is placed, a number of different types of dental problems can develop. Malocclusions of the late mixed or permanent dentitions, caused by thumb sucking are not self corrected and orthodontic treatment is necessary for their correction. Lymphatic tissue. In order to produce oral respiration, the mandible is postured inferiorly with the tongue protruded and resting against the oral floor. This postural alteration induces dental and skeletal modifications similar to those caused by thumb sucking. This may cause excessive eruption of the posterior teeth, leading to an increase in the vertical dimension of the face and result in development of anterior open bite. Tongue thrust. Tongue habits cause an anterior open bite or they develop secondarily to thumb sucking. In skeletal open bite the tongue habit acts as a secondary factor which helps to maintain or exacerbate the condition. Many orthodontists have had a discouraging experience of completing dental treatment, with what appeared to be good results, only to discover that the case had relapsed because the patient had a tongue thrust swallowing pattern. Conclusion. Dentoalveolar or habitual open bite is caused by habits, which influence the growth and development of dentoalveolar processes and contribute to occlusal disharmonies. Prior to eruption of adult dentition, open bite related to oral habits is usually not a concern as when the habits stop, because the erupting dentition tends to improve spontaneously. Treatment is usually not necessary until permanent teeth erupt (~6 years old). .

Anterior crossbite is relatively a common presentation in the mixed dentition stage. If left untreated, it can lead to a host of problems and may complicate future orthodontic treatment. One of the major difficulties in performing anterior crossbite correction in young children is treatment compliance. In most cases, poor compliance is due to the unacceptability of the removable appliance used. This article describes three cases of successful correction of anterior crossbite of patients in mixed dentition using short-span wire-fixed orthodontic appliances. This sectional appliance provides an alternative method of correcting anterior crossbite of dental origin and offers many advantages compared to the use of removable appliances.

Résumé :

The primary care of the Paediatric dentist is guidance of the child’s developing dentition, in accordance with the stage of orofacial growth and development . Anterior dental crossbite results from the lingual position of the maxillary anterior teeth in relationship with mandibular anterior teeth. In any type of crossbite correction, the practitioner must be able to delineate whether crossbite is of dental origin or skeletal origin . Dental Crossbite involves the localized tipping of a tooth or teeth, does not involve the basal bone . In case of simple anterior dental crossbite, the patient presents a normal skeletal pattern with abnormalities presenting in the axial inclination of the affected teeth. According to Profitt, first adequate space needs to be opened to bring the displaced tooth or teeth across the occlusion into its proper position for anterior dental crossbite correction. Certain malocclusions should be corrected during the mixed dentition period which aids in the normal growth of jaws and surrounding structures. This article describes successful management of anterior segmental cross bite case treated using 2 x 4 appliance. The 2 x 4 appliance is a partially fixed orthodontic appliance that is used in children in a mixed dentition period to correct simple malocclusions associated with permanent anterior teeth.

Résumé :

Objective Orthodontic camouflage treatments improve occlusion but might worsen facial profile in patients with Class III malocclusion. It has been reported that surgical clockwise rotation of maxillomandibular complex (MMc) improves facial profile by reducing chin prominence and chin throat length in patients with Class III malocclusion. The purpose of this report was to illustrate two orthodontic techniques for clockwise rotation of the MMc in late teenagers with Class III malocclusion and preliminarily evaluate their clinical effects. Patients and Methods Six patients in late teenage with Class III malocclusion were included in this preliminary report. Bite raisers were first placed on the upper molars to open the bite and clockwise rotate the mandible. Intermaxillary elastics were then applied vertically between the upper and lower dentitions in 3 patients for bimaxillary extrusion (Technique-1) or between the upper dentition and the lower temporary anchorage devices (TADs) in another 3 patients (Technique-2) for upper dentition extrusion and closure of the anterior open bite. The three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography images taken before and after orthodontic treatment were superimposed to evaluate the treatment effects of MMc clockwise rotation for both techniques. Results The Technique-1 extruded the upper and lower dentitions, rotated the mandible clockwise 2.01°, moved chin down 2.98 mm, and back −1.64 mm, although the mandible grew 2.47 mm during the treatment period. The Technique-2 extruded the upper dentition, rotated the mandible clockwise 0.90°, moved chin down 1.78 mm, but slightly forward 0.47 mm due to the mandible grew 2.50 mm and lower dentition was not extruded. Conclusions The orthodontic clockwise rotation of MMc is an effective technique for orthognathic camouflage. The applications of bite raisers and bimaxillary dentition extrusion could be more effective than single dentition extrusion with TADs in the mandible for clockwise rotation of MMc and improvement of occlusion and facial profile in late teenagers with Class III malocclusion. However, the comprehensive clinical effects and long-term stability need further clinical studies.

ABSTRACT Anterior crossbite is one of the most common forms of malocclusion in sagittal relationship of maxilla and mandible. If not corrected at the earliest, it will cause restriction of normal growth and development of both the jaws. The incidence of anterior crossbite is 4 to 5% in primary dentition. Self-correction may occur at the transient dentition or permanent dentition stage, but treating it should be the first priority. Using either removable or fixed appliances is recommended for the correction, but it depends on the patient cooperation, treatment duration, and parent approval. In this case report, we have used planas direct tracks (PDTs) which helps the forward development of mandible and corrects the malocclusion. With two modifications to PDTs, one is using acrylic instead of composite. It is advantageous to both clinicians and parents by correcting the crossbite efficiently in short duration while taking less chair-side time for fabrication and being economical. Supernumerary teeth are common changes in the human dentition that can compromise a congruous dental and facial growth and development. Early diagnosis and proper treatment of these developmental changes are essential for establishing occlusal, functional, and aesthetic congruence. Thus, this article reports the functional and aesthetic rehabilitation of a supernumerary peg-shaped tooth located in the anterior maxillary region of a preschooler. The tooth was restored directly using nanocomposite resin system, a putty index of the incisal position, and modified cotton roll isolation. This minimally invasive procedure not only allows future adjustment but also perfect control of the rehabilitation and simultaneous reestablishment of the child's self-esteem and tooth aesthetics and function. However, treatment should not be limited to the restorative technique. Maintenance of oral health and arch integrity are essential for the correct transition between the primary and permanent dentitions, preventing the treatment from affecting the permanent dentition.

Aim and objective: The objective of this in-vivo study was to evaluate gingival thickness of mid buccally and interdentally in primary, mixed & permanent dentition.Method: The study included 40 subjects (22 males and 18 females) with 480 sites of an age range 4-25 Years. Subjects were divided into 3 groups – the primary dentition (4-6 years) mixed dentition (7-13 years) and adult dentition (16-25 years). All the parameters were measured in upper and lower anterior segments.Results: Gingival thickness (GT) was measured arch wise and tooth wise in different dentition and overall dentition wise without differentiating arch wise and toothwise. Gingival thickness (GT) was significantly higher (p=.001) in mixed dentition midbuccally (1.3 +0.46) and interdentally (2.31+0.71) in both the arches. GT (MB) was significantly higher in primary dentition (1.4+0.5) and GT (ID) was significant in mixed dentition (2.6+0.7).Conclusion: Gingival thickness increases from primary to mixed dentition and significantly higher in maxilla.

Enamel hypoplasia is a dental pathology that forms when an individual is exposed to physiological stress in early life while tooth crowns are developing. Biological anthropologists utilize these enamel defects as indicators of growth interruption and interpret them as reflective of factors pertaining to health status and cultural practices that influence health. Over decades of research, numerous studies have noted a pattern in the distribution of linear enamel hypoplasia across the dentition. It is suggested that the anterior dentition presents the highest frequency of defects, followed by the premolars, with molars most rarely exhibiting hypoplasia. This apparent differential susceptibility pattern has resulted in the preferential study of the anterior dentition in anthropology, however little research has been conducted into the validity or cause of this developmental phenomenon. Through examination of the literature, the observed higher frequency of enam2el hypoplasia in the anterior dentition substantiates the existence of this differential distribution pattern. Further investigation reveals that the cause of this varying susceptibility has not been sufficiently explored, leading to a number of inconclusive explanations. Examination of these theories – ranging from the chronology of tooth development, specifics of crown morphology, and variations in genetic control – indicate that there is no single causal variable, but that a multitude of factors are responsible. From this research it is apparent that further study is necessary to fully understand why the anterior teeth appear to be more susceptible to hypoplastic defects than their posterior counterparts.

In developing countries, the prevalence of dental caries in children remains high, which means that implementing a simple and convenient classification is critical. The classification needs to be evidence-based and needs to reflect tooth-level information. In this study, the prevalence of dental caries in the primary dentition of 352 Myanmar school children at the ages of 5, 6, and 7 was analyzed at the tooth level to clarify the underlying data structure of the patterns of dental caries in the population. Ninety-three percent of subjects had caries in primary dentition and the mean number of decayed teeth in primary dentition was 7.54 ± 4.82. Based on the item response theory analysis, mixed-effect modeling, and Bayesian network analysis, we proposed the following classification: Group 1: No dental caries; Group 2: Dental caries in molar teeth or dental caries in maxillary anterior teeth; Group 3: Dental caries in both molar and maxillary anterior teeth; Group 4: Dental carries in mandibular anterior teeth. Dental caries (dmft) in the groups was different between groups. The results of characteristics of tooth-level information and classification presented in this study may be a useful instrument for the analysis of the data of dental caries prevalence in primary dentition.

The study aimed to compare and evaluate the stress that was distributed around mini-implant, molar hook and anterior dentition during its en-masse retraction from both canine hook and arch-wire hook. Four FEM models of maxilla were created to carry out en-masse retraction of the anterior teeth using forces from mini-implant and molar hook to both arch-wire hook and canine hook. The force of 200 grams was applied with Ni-Ti closed coil spring in all four models to carry out anterior teeth retraction. Stress distribution were then analyzed. The mini-implant group showed higher stresses on the implant when compared to the molar hook group. The molar hook groups showed more stress on the dentition than that of the mini-implant group. The models where the arch-wire hook used for retraction showed less stress values on the bone, teeth, dentition, PDL when compared with that of the canine hook.The arch-wire hook can be considered a better option than the canine hook. When forces were applied to the arch-wire hook lesser stresses were seen on bone, teeth, dentition, and PDL. The implant-supported group showed lesser stress values on teeth when compared with that of the molar hook group.

Case presentation: Aim of this study is to describe the treatment of a patient with mixed dentition and anterior dental crossbite. The objectives of treatment were to correct the malocclusion, to align the incisor, to control the permanent teeth in a good eruption and improve aesthetical conditions. Materials and Methods: This study presents an interceptive therapy which can use to treat the anterior crossbite. In this case, it shows that the use of the myofunctional appliance change the anterior dental crossbite. Discussion: Various authors present solved clinical examples and recommend the use of removable appliances to treat de anterior dental crossbite. Conclusions: Anterior crossbite is a malocclusion that must be diagnosed and treated early to establish well-balanced occlusal development.

Sizes of horizontal wear facets of maxillary anterior teeth were studied longitudinally from the primary dentition at age five to the young adult dentition at the age of 18 years. By a planimetric method, we calculated the wear areas on dental casts taken at the ages of five, ten, 14, and 18 years from the dentition of 39 healthy, orthodontically untreated subjects with good morphological occlusion. For young adults, we also studied the association between the amount of wear and reported parafunctions, maximal bite force, salivary buffer capacity, salivary flow rate, and some cephalometric variables. Size of wear facets on all anterior teeth increased with age. Significant correlations were found between the total wear areas of the six anterior primary teeth at five years of age and those of their permanent successors at age 14 (r = 0.44) and 18 (r = 0.39). For an individual, tooth wear at five years of age was, however, of low predictive value for tooth wear in young adulthood, whereas tooth wear at 14 years of age predicted it well (r = 0.89). Highest correlations between tooth wear and background factors at 18 years of age were found for maximal anterior bite force (r = 0.44) and for the size of the gonial angle (r = -0.31). Wear of anterior teeth was not associated with reported parafunctions in young adulthood.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between occlusal factors (overjet, overbite, Angle's Classification of molars and cuspids, the relationship of the primary molars, openbite, lateral openbite, scissorbite and crossbite) and bruxism in permanent and mixed dentition in Turkish children. For this reason 182 children with mixed dentition and 212 children with permanenth dentition were included in this study. Occlusal conditions were examined clinically and bruxism was assesed by using interview and questionnaires. Z Test was used to compare the results. It was found that in both dentition some occlusal factors related with bruxism (overjet > 6 mm, overbite > 5 mm, negative overjet, openbite in permanent dentition; overjet > 6 mm, overbite > 5 mm, scissorbite, anterior-posterior multiple teeth crossbite, Angle Class I occlusion in mixed dentition.

Hemophilia is a congenital disorder associated with impaired blood clotting. Routine dental intervention to prevent oral bleeding in patients with hemophilia is considered important, but its effectiveness remains unknown. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of continual dental support on periodontal status and oral health habits in young patients with hemophilia. Of the 168 young patients with hemophilia who visited our clinic for 5 years, we selected subjects who had visited annually since 2015 and were in the mixed and permanent dentitions. To evaluate the periodontal status of these subjects, Community Periodontal Index (CPI) values in the molars and anterior teeth were measured. In addition, a questionnaire regarding oral health habits, including floss use, frequency of brushing by parents, and attending a family dentist, was administered to the subjects and their parents. In the patients with mixed dentition, the CPI values for the upper right molars and lower left central incisor decreased significantly in later years compared with the first year (p < 0.05). In the patients with permanent dentition, only one year recorded a significant decrease in CPI values compared with the first year (p < 0.05), localized in the upper right molars. The results of the questionnaire revealed that continual dental support improved dental floss use and the frequency of brushing by parents only in the mixed dentition group. Furthermore, these oral health habits significantly affected CPI values only in the mixed dentition group (p < 0.01). These results suggest that continual dental support improves the periodontal condition and oral health habits of hemophilic patients, especially those with mixed dentition.

The current study deals with the anterior premolar pattern in the cave and brown bear lineage, and its significance in species determination. The occurrence of single premolars and its combinations in skulls and mandibles is recorded for various chronological and regional groups. Both lineages stay more “conservative” in the upper than in the lower dentition, but show contrasting reduction tendencies. Brown bears tend to retain the first premolar, while in the cave bear lineage, third premolars prevail. Exclusively diagnostic for brown bears is the occurrence of a single P1, as well as a complete dentition in skulls. With caution, the combination of P1 and P3 is characteristic for the Deninger bear/cave bear lineage. This pattern was not observed in the current brown bear sample, but has been mentioned in literature. In mandibles, evidence of a single p1 (and its combinations) and a complete dentition is exclusively found in brown bears. A single lower p3 is diagnostic for Deninger bears in completely preserved diastema. The absence of all three anterior premolars as typical for the cave bear lineage is occasionally reported for brown bears in literature, but was not observed in the studied material. Other premolar combinations stay scarce in both lineages, and may partly be influenced by early or pathological tooth loss. Brown bears reveal no evolutionary trend in premolar reduction. All possible patterns and a similar frequency of complete dentition is found in modern and fossil representatives. No evidence was found for high variability in the premolar pattern of U. deningeri, as is suggested in literature. The already moderate presence of anterior premolars declines further in Late Pleistocene cave bears. AbstractThe Common Wolf snake, Lycodon aulicus capucinus, is a species known to feed on durophagous prey such as skinks. Here we examine in detail the dentitional morphology of L. aulicus capucinus to see whether it possesses morphological specialisations for durophagy comparable to those found in other squamates. We find that L. aulicus capucinus has greatly enlarged anterior maxillary teeth, followed by a large diastema. At the diastema, the maxilla is significantly arched. The diastema is followed by a row of small, closely-packed teeth. Finally, after a short second diastema are enlarged, but ungrooved posterior maxillary fangs, with the posterior surfaces modified into blades. We propose that this dentition helps L. aulicus capucinus to ingest hard-bodied skinks in several ways: The enlarged anterior teeth and arched maxilla encircle the prey during biting, preventing it from being squeezed out of the mouth anteriorly, the short, spatulate teeth may catch under the scales of the prey, preventing escape during swallowing, and the bladelike posterior fang may slice through the hard, cycloid scales of the prey.

AbstractAll-ceramic systems represent an excellent restorative alternative for fixed dental prostheses, single crowns, and veneers in the anterior dentition. With respect to improved mechanical properties, lithium disilicate ceramic material provide a broad range of indications, and extended veneers can serve as an alternative to full crowns. Although ceramic veneers represent a more conservative approach compared to crowns, the correct indication is essential to achieving the ideal outcome. The following case reports describe two types of fixed restorations of the anterior dentition: extended lithium disilicate ceramic veneers and lithium disilicate full crowns. Factors influencing treatment selection for each type of restorations are presented.

Occlusal characteristics that are found in the primary dentition have a substantial role in the occlusal characteristics which will appear in permanent dentition. Consequently, a good background of Occlusal characteristics in children is substantial for dental practitioners. Use an observational, cross-sectional study on selected children randomly in Salah Al-Din to define the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition in the group of Salah Al-Din's children. Objective: Collecting more data and information about the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition in a group of Salah Al-Din's children. Methods: In randomly form selected 413 children between 3 and 6 years old from Salah Al-Din governorate as the sample. Under natural daylight or room light, the examination was done on all children to observe needed characteristics with the inclusion criteria. Prevalence of different types of terminal plane, primary canine relationship, anterior and posterior crossbite overjet, overbite, and primate spaces of the primary dentition were estimated. In the terminal plane we see that the flush terminal plane is the most prevalent type (63.20%). In a primary canine relationship, Class I was the most common type (80.39%). The ideal form of overjet was most common (88.86%). The most common form of overbite was the normal overbite (82.32%). Anterior and posterior have low prevalent (3.63%,1.94% respectively). Observed that primate space was present in 71.19% of the upper arch, and 60.05% is the ratio of mandible space. Conclusion: Most of the sample has desirable occlusal characteristics such as Flush terminal plane, Class 1 canine relationship, normal overjet etc., and undesirable occlusal characteristics have low prevalence as anterior open bite, reverse overjet..etc.

INTRODUCTION: Non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs) can cause occlusal alterations, including anterior open bite (AOB). However, not all patients develop this malocclusion. Therefore, the emergence of AOB does not depend on deleterious habits, only. OBJECTIVE: Investigate a potential association between non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs), anterior open bite (AOB) and facial morphology (FM). METHODS: 176 children in the primary dentition stage were selected. Intra and extraoral clinical examinations were performed and the children's legal guardians were asked to respond to a questionnaire comprising issues related to non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs). RESULTS: A statistically significant relationship was found between non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs) and anterior open bite (AOB). However, no association was found between these factors and children's facial morphology (FM). CONCLUSIONS: Non-nutritive sucking habits (NNSHs) during the primary dentition stage play a key role in determining anterior open bite (AOB) malocclusion regardless of patient's morphological facial pattern (FM).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine dental archs’ shape, and to describe differences in transversal dimensions and archs’ depths in mixed dentition, in order to know occlusal harmony arrangement in a native student population from Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia. Methods and materials: A cross-sectional study with 64 students (32 boys and 32 girls) distributed in two groups: 31 students with early mixed dentitions and 33 students with belated mixed dentitions between 6 and 12 years old was carried out. Studied variables were measured from plaster cast study models. Results: Oval upper arch was found in 86% of students while 14% had squared upper arch. Proportions for lower arch shape were 75% oval and 25% squared, respectively. Most of the transversal dimensions had differences in both groups. Inferior intercanine distances were constant. Depth, width and length measurements are evidence of harmonic dental arch development for Amazonian children. Discussion: This ethnic group had higher oval arch shape prevalence, followed by squared arch shape There were differences for all arch depth measurements, mainly in anterior sector due to the susceptibility to environmental factors in mixed dentition period. Conclusions: Occlusal harmony in this population is a result of arch shape, as well as transversal and depth changes physiologically normal.

The most common malocclusion presented during primary dentition are anterior crossbite and deep overbite.If the primary dentition does not show severe skeletal discrepancy, it is possible to treat malocclusion using pre-fabricated myofunctional appliance that is easily applied to children. By improving the malocclusion in the primary dentition, normalization of the oral muscle function can be induced. In addition, the normal occlusion of the primary incisor region and ideal position of the lips can make a desirable occlusal relationship at the transition of incisors. If factors such as growth pattern, patient cooperation, and post-treatment maintenance are carefully judged and implemented, the interceptive treatment of primary dentition can contribute to normal growth and development.

Of all congenital dental abnormalities, form abnormalities — gemination and fusion are the most common in dental practice. Although both anomalies clinically appear to be similar, with the formation of an unusually wide tooth, the distinction between the two anomalies is always a challenge for practitioners. Both gemination and fusion are found in both dentitions, although a higher prevalence, 0.5% -2.5%, was observed in the primary dentition. The teeth in the anterior region are more commonly affected, with a higher incidence in the lower jaw and an equal predilection for sex. This paper highlights the importance of diagnosing and treating these abnormalities in a timely manner.
