Abstract: In 1904, a group of businessmen arrived in Brazil to invest and explore rail transport. Their main representative was Percival Farquhar, who performed activities ranging from utilities such as power distribution to transportation. In 1906, the group creates Brazil Railway Company, a holding company, and takes over the vast majority of Brazilian railroad concessions. Its activities were concentrated mainly in the South and Southeast of the country. Farquhar's administration arrived until the 1920s, when management changed due to an economic crisis. The Brazil Railway Company has peculiar characteristics: it has developed, in addition to rail transportation, colonization and extractive activities, such as the exploitation of timber in the South and frozen beef. Our research aims to study the railway activities of this holding in the South and Southeast of the country, from 1904 to 1920. We use as source the official documents of the company itself, periodicals and Ministerial Reports, as well as personal documentation, such as letters and Crafts of Farquhar and other members of the group

Texte intégralLiterary depictions of the railway do, however, exhibit a tension between communitarian and individualist values that may itself lie at the heart of the Canadian character. Some of the earliest representations of the railway, in travel narratives of the late nineteenth century, make explicit reference to the notion that the railway was a sign and a product of a common national imagination. But poets of this period virtually ignored the railway for fear that its presence would disturb the peaceful contemplation, and thus the identity, of the individuals who populated the pastoral spaces of their verse. Modern poets did eventually manage to include the train in their work, but used it most often as a vehicle to continue the private musings of their individual lyric speakers rather than to explore the terrain of the national consciousness. One prominent exception to this tendency is E. J. Pratt's Towards the Last Spike, in which imposing individuals such as Sir John A. Macdonald and William Van Horne and thousands of unnamed rail workers combine their efforts in order to construct the railway, which stands as a symbol of how individuals and communities can work together in the national interest. Canadian fiction demonstrates the same impulses as Canadian poetry by using the railway as a means of depicting the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of individuals, but it also challenges the myth of the railway's creation of a unitary national culture by showing how diverse communities---of race, class, and region---imagine their relationship to the railway in very different ways.
The varied character of Canada's literary treatment of one of the country's central national symbols suggests that a tension between individualism and communitarianism also informs Canadian literature itself, whose writers have used the railway to fulfill their goals in individual texts but have rarely employed it as a symbol of national community.

Texte intégralThis thesis analyzes the performance of Brazil Railway Company, holding company created by Percival Farquhar in 1906 in the United States and it acted in the Region of Contestado at railway, timbering and colonizing branches. Through the subsidiary Southern Brazil Lumber & Colonization Company, Brazil Railway installed a large timber complex extractive exporter and promoted the colonization of land granted or acquired setting immigrants and settlers in deforested areas. During the period from 1906 to 1916 the Region of Contestado went through a process of profound transformations that provoked economic, social, cultural, political and environmental changes. These changes were crucial factors in the outbreak of armed struggle unleashed in 1912 which was extended until 1916 and it was named the Contestado War. The outbreak of the Contestado war is addressed in the context of changes occurred with the opening of the railroad Sao Paulo-Rio Grande, which cut vertically the Region of Contestado in 1910 and it was the beginning of timbering and colonizing activities of Southern Brazil Lumber & Colonization Company in 1911 and the consequent occupation of land for projects of colonization. Former residents of the Contestado Region, many of them, settlers who occupied the vacant lands that were granted to Brazil Railway Company, revolted and destroyed railway stations, burned the timber Lumber of Calmon and attacked the settlers installed by the Company in Rio das Antas. The war of Contestado left a balance of aproximately eight thousand deaths, the vast majority, poor country people who lived in the Contestado Region. The study was compiled from a documentary research based on public and private archives, bibliographies on the subject, and also through oral history from interviews with former employees of the Southern Brazil Lumber & Colonization Company and their descendants.

Texte intégralRailways have performed a significant role on the Argentine and Brazilian economic development during the second half of nineteenth century. These countries have adopted an agro-export economic model, with the purpose of deepening their ties with the international economy that was being developed. Thousands of kilometers of rails were built in each country. A good amount of them by privates, who were granted a concession from Argentine and Brazilian Governments both national and provincial. In order to build rails in countries that were, during mid-nineteenth century, loosely linked with the worlds economy and lacking railways, the governments had to bestow benefits to privates, to make concessions more attractive. This study aims to investigate the conditions and the contracts of the first railway concessions of four Argentine and Brazilian companies: the Central Argentine Railway Company, the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway Company, the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro and the Companhia Mogiana de Estradas de Ferro. These companies were established in regions in which the agro-export model has developed. In addition to the study of the concessions, the companies performance was also analyzed. The main sources of this work are: (i) the railways concessions; (ii) normative documents about railways in Argentina and Brazil; (iii) report of the directors to shareholders of the analyzed companies; and (iv) railway magazines from the nineteenth century. The privileges conceded to investors were important to promote the first railways in Argentina and Brazil. A guarantee of interest was the main privilege given in order to render the concessions attractive, as this benefit was also bestowed by different countries. However, the guarantee of interest was, oftenly, given in a non careful manner as other benefits conceded by the government. Many of the criticisms related to the grant of benefits in concessions question not the benefits per se, but the way they were bestowed and, afterwards, regulated. If, on one hand, the guarantee of interest has sustained unprofitable railways, it has also had the ability to promote lucrative railways, that have become free of this subsidy and have developed their own national economy. It is the case of the four investigated companies: they have revealed themselves profitable during the 1880s, despite the differences that distinguished them: extension, differences at the colonization of the regions in which they were built, gauge, passenger and good carried, among others.

Texte intégralThe present thesis aims to study the workers, known as “turmeiros”, who were hired to work in the construction of the south line of the railroad that connected São Paulo to Rio Grande (1908-1910) specifically in the part that was later called the Contestado Movement (1912-1916). The historiography about this movement gives a depreciative idea of these workers and suggests their leadership in the conflict. After a deep historigraphic study, it was observed that this representation was supported by only one source so other documents were collected. The study showed that the railway construction was involved with corruption and shady business. A worn out speech of modernity was used but it did not correspond the experience the locals and the constructors had, who suffered the consequences of intense exploration. The Contestado Movement itself had caused some loss to the Company but on the other side rescued the railway from a constant deficit taking it to a short period of surplus. Getting closer to the investigative focus, it was noted the imprecision of some categorical affirmations that were done by the historiography about the construction workers of the South Line. According to them, they were discredited people who came from the center of the country and who stayed in the region making it more violent. Studies showed that a very significant contingent or perhaps even the majority of the workers were immigrants. Some of those workers were brought by the Railway Company; others left some colonial regions temporarily in the south states, especially from Paraná, to obtain some provisional money with the construction of the railroad. There was some indication that most of them did not stay in the region when the work was finished, it happened gradually and the withdrawal was slow. The participation of a great number of these men in the Contestado Movement is questioned and it points to permanence much less expressive than what was affirmed in the historiography. The investigation had its theoretical suppositions that were taken from the microhistory, through the precise clipping of the object and also from the intensive use of sources and evidentiary method.

Most firms have numerous problems in organizational employee cognition and communication. Despite their negative effects were reported to higher level management, business managers cannot realize the root and essence of these issues. Therefore, paying more attention to organizational communication and taking effective measures to improve organizational communication is an important key to achieving organizational goals and creating good performance. This study selects the Railway Operating Division staff in T Company, which its scale of first-line employees is largest within the company, as main study targets. By using qualitative research to interview three employees representing low, medium, and high level managers, this study targets to investigate: (a) The effect of employee’s cognition and work attitude on operation execution; (b) The cognitive difference between low, medium, and high level management in terms of organizational goal setting and decision making; (c) The correlation between organizational communication and overall performance of the firm. Results of this study shows many cognitive differences between low, medium, and high level management, with ineffective communication in formal communicating platforms, accompanied by low willingness of employees to express opinions. Effectiveness of organizational communication has a substantial impact on the organization’s performance, good organizational communication not only can smoothen the flow of information or messages, but also have a positive effect on the organization’s decision making, execution and performance, which is a matter worthy of attention and serious consideration to managers in each level of a firm.

For a long period, the Taiwan Railway has played a major role in the transportation services along the western corridor of Taiwan since 1887. This unique operational condition will no longer exist after the high-speed railway of Taiwan begins operating. Taiwan Railway Company’s performance in recent years has not been outstanding, and has had to face the Taiwan High-speed Railway’s competition. How to position and dominate the market is the challenge for the Taiwan Railway Company. This study uses Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze the affect among Perceived Organizational Support, Job Satisfaction, Job Involvement, Organizational Commitment and Organizational Citizenship Behavior. The results can be used as a reference for firms and the staff. According to this study result, the main discoveries are: 1. Generally, the whole theory model is acceptable, suitable and can be supported, so these five constructs have a relationship to each other. 2. Regarding the whole model, the direct relationship between Perceived Organizational Support and Organizational Citizenship Behavior does not exist, and only an indirect relationship exists. The direct relationship between Job Satisfaction and Organizational Citizenship Behavior does not exist, and only an indirect relationship exists. The direct relationship between Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment does not exist, and only an indirect relationship exists. This is results means that the staff members of Taiwan Railway Company more care more about the inherent impression of their work relatively, and when their contribution and value are approved by the organization, they will promote the self-cognitive and will bring extra behavior spontaneously and put in more effort to benefit the organization. 3. According to this study model, both Job Involvement and Organizational Commitment directly affect Organizational Citizenship Behavior. This result means that they have already experienced the value of self-promotion obtained from the job as a staff member of Taiwan Railway Company, and have approved the goal and value of the organization. Through binding the emotion, it will impel the staff to have confidence in the organization, and will be willing to devote their mental and physical efforts to the organization.

International labor movement has been inevitable under the globalization trend. And it also leads the development of entire macroeconomics and improvement of enterprise’s performance? Or it turns the competition between local workers and overseas workers? Or the overseas adjustment for foreign workers will affect the enterprise consideration of the rate of flow? Or the consideration of company labor cost ? Therefore, the international company consider all of these to their human resource policy. And all of these are the important issues for discussing. Majority of foreign workers in Taiwan come from the countries more backward, like as from Tailand and India. This research differs from the others is to investigate the overseas adjustments for white color foreign workers in Taiwan railway dispatching industries .In view of the fact that the recent years, big national constructions as Taiwan High Speed Railway, more overseas professional workers we need, more overseas adjustments issues happen . This research is to study the overseas adjustments for the white color foreigners in railway industries. Thus, this study use one railway company as an example, and the white color foreigners who work for , use the interview process , total are 10 persons , 4 Australians , 2 Britishs , 1 South African, 1 Norwegian , 1 Canadian, I Filipino. This research is by interview and questionnaires , collect the Q & A from four variables: national cultural distance, emotional intelligence and social capital to analyze the data and detect hypotheses. In the research process, the participants have had repelled and were not willing to be disturbed , but after persuading step by step, they began to tell their real feeling. One week before Q & A, the interviewer has to send the questionnaires to each possible participants to let them have time to glance the contents which inquired. The results are as follow: 1、 There was no significantly effect of national cultural distance on oversea adjustment of foreign workers. 2、 There were most significantly positive effects of motional intelligence on overseas adjustment of foreign workers. 3、 There were most significantly positive effects of social capital dimensions on overseas adjustment of foreign workers from different nationality. Furthermore, the present study suggested the emphases on selection, training, and policies exercising to promote benefits while introducing foreign workers into our country.
Pham, Hoang Giang. « A rolling horizon approach for the locomotive routing problem at the Canadian National Railway Company ». Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/24331.
Texte intégralThis thesis addresses the locomotive routing problem arising at the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) - the largest railway in Canada in terms of both revenue and the physical size of its rail network. The problem aims to determine the sequence of activities for each locomotive over the planning horizon. Besides assigning locomotives to scheduled trains and considering scheduled locomotive maintenance requirements, the problem also includes other decisions, such as sending locomotives to stations by deadheading, light traveling, and leasing of third-party locomotives. Based on an Integer Programming formulation and a Time-Expanded Network presented in the literature, we introduce a Rolling Horizon Approach (RHA) as a method to find near-optimal solutions of this problem in acceptable computing time. We adapt a mathematical formulation and a space-time network from the literature. We introduce a new type of arcs for the network and new constraints for the model to cope with issues arising when dividing the planning horizon into smaller ones. Computational experiments on real-life instances show the pros and cons of our algorithm when compared to an exact solution approach.

The cost of electricity for the electric rail transport is a major burden, under normal operation, overall electric power cost can be reduced with time-of-use rates and optimal contract capacity. But abnormality still occurs occasionally and causes abnormal operation, resulting in abnormal demand for electricity, violation of the electricity supply contract, and huge surcharge payment. Through the occurrence of abnormal events, this study calculates the train energy consumption and substation load with the use of train operation diagram of abnormal events, and analyses the change of electricity use, to understand the impact to the operation as well as to the substation load. The results show that the "equipment failure" type of abnormal events has the longest and the most serious impact to the substation load, and bigger impact is made when the abnormality occurs in off-peak hours. If the influence time is longer, the deferred effect is caused and the impact will be extended to other substation power supply range. The findings suggest railway operators to consider the possible impact of abnormalities in advance when planning electricity contract capacity, in order to reduce the surcharge and avoid the heavy burden of electricity bill . Measure the minimized total cost and achieve the minimum cost of electricity by considering the probability of abnormality or soft/hardware maintenance costs, not only to reduce the loss of operation cost but also the waste of basic tariff.

After government financial assistance in 2015, Taiwan High Speed Rail has turn from a private company to a public-oriented company, which means government will control key operation assets or rights, such as ticket fare. However, the government insist launch to stock market and promise a 4.9% return rate in long-run. The only and most valuable asset that Taiwan High Speed Rail Company owned is over one million passengers per year. Therefore, this study is to invite experts to discuss how big data can applied to customer relationship management and therefore to create more business opportunity The study found that the company has valuable data information, if the company can conducted a well-planned membership program and collect overall information properly, the company in the end can understand each customer’s lifestyle, that is the most precious information and powerful tool to increase revenue. - Railway business: to drive customers from peak train to off-peak train, by offering a promotion which meet customer’ preference - Affiliated business: by understanding customers’ preference to recommend sales item, to pricing advertising fee, or to develop new product/service. - Marketing cooperation: A lifestyle database of over hundred million customers is rare in the market, the company can leverage it and co-op with different industries.

Due to energy decreasing and industrialized countries are polluting the global environment causing the climate dramatic changes, the government thus began to develop rail industry and construct the rail transport infrastructure to reduce using in the energy, carbon dioxide emissions, and the impact on the global environment. However, Taiwan began to build rail infrastructure , due to the limitations of past market demand resulting in industrial technology and supply chain unable to support large-scale construction project, only through the assistance of foreign track manufacturers or track consultants to provide technical and equipment to help Taiwan build rail transport system. After the commencement of operation of the track built up through BOT or by Taiwan local government, the equipment gradually needs to be maintained, and the consumable parts must be replaced. Particularly in the rail project, vehicle parts are in enormous quantities and the procurement cost is hard to be reduced due to the limitation of sole supplier. In order to solve the problem of a deficient supplier source, the railway company to, began to develop alternative products. Nevertheless, due to the selection of suppliers lacks of a thorough consideration, the result of supplier development often fails that leads to a loss. Therefore, this study will explore the impact factor of supplier selected by the railway transport operations for an alternative product development, and take the example of the pantograph components used in rail vehicles. Invite experts to investigate the factors that influence supplier through Delphi method and then use the right vendor analysis and statistical factors influence weight of AHP, statistical results of the indicators, intended to solve the existing problems faced by the railway company in the selection of suppliers︰ 1.To reduce development risk of failure and the results of statistical indicators can facilitate the decision-makers quickly making a decision. 2.This paper discusses the analysis method used in the future to serve Lee issues on the development of other components.

According to Ministry of Transportation and Communications R.O.C, the rate of passengers of intercity bus had decreased from 20% to 13.5% since 2007 to 2009, and the rate of revenues of intercity bus had decreased from 48.2% to 36%. The operation of Taiwan High Speed Railway is one of the major factors of this recession. The enterprise reduced price to confront the threat of high speed railway. For example, Kou-Kuang Motor Transportation Company cut down the 20% price of Taipei to Kaohsiung route in 2008. We can analyze the operation data of this route to confirm the efficacy of this strategy. The results of price elasticity of demand analysis showed that: 1)The value of price elasticity violated the law of demand since 2004 to 2007. 2)The value of price elasticity conformed the law of demand since 2007 to 2010. It was elastic when Kou-Kuang raise the price, and it was inelastic when Kou-Kuang reduced the price. We also use the multiple linear regression and Chow breakpoint test to prove that the operation of high speed railway is the major factor of the recession of the intercity bus. The results showed that: 1)The operation of high speed railway caused the structural change on the intercept of the regression model. 2)The operation of high speed railway had significant relationship to the recession of the intercity bus.

The purpose of the paper is to find a new community plan for Zeng Zai Liao community, which focuses on the priorities of pedestrians and bicycles as well as preserving community landscape and historic sites, instead of only thinking of linking the path of motor vehicles in the community . The old houses in Zeng Zai Liao community need maintenance , which also makes the pedestrian path cluttering. Besides , the recent urban renewal of the Zeng Zai Liao community adjacent to the Keelung Railway station and the Zong-shan First Road widening case brings new public constructions and new opportunities for the community . However , new public constructions always bring highly-intense destruction . In addition , the Keelung City intends to develop an urban renewal plan which contains larger street blocks with the vehicle-based model, challenging the current and future development of the organic community texture . Through interviewing the local residents and observing the community life routes and the state of houses, the researcher attempts to combine four urban design theories and derive three value systems: 1. the value of urban cities 2. a vertical moving-line landscape value 3. the pedestrian-ramp-bicycle priority value system. In design, the researcher places a linear ladder, a rain corridor and squares and parks, in addition to transforming houses to a public hall and undergoing necessary old houses refurbishment. The research results are found in designing: a new vertical movement route can be operated in the community with parks and squares surrounded. Besides, the new railway station renewal brings new commercial needs in the current context of the organic community texture. With the three value systems mentioned above, it is possible to create new opportunities of leisure and life for the Zeng Zai Liao community.

Texte intégralThe Companhia Real dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses, created in 1860, following the concession of East and North lines to José de Salamanca, became the main Portuguese railway company. It appeared at a moment when the accelerated means of transportation existed already in Portugal, but was trying to show its advantages. In this way, the new company ultimately allowed the appearance of railroad transport and its network became the basis of the current Portuguese railroad network. None of the companies created afterwards manage to be as economic and politically successful as this first company. Therefore, this company influenced some political decisions and transport policies. In addition to the development in the infrastructures, the Company contributed to the construction of famous structures of the Portuguese Engineering, such as the bridge of Maria Pia and the Rossio station. The Companhia Real became an important agent by catching the attention of international investments in the Portuguese market. It was one of few enterprises to establish its activity on an international basis, promoting and supporting an extensive network in Spain. The company was a dynamic organism deeply influenced by national and international political frameworks and also functioned as an important agent of change of that same reality. Several outputs and inputs can be attributed to the Company, from which must be highlighted its role in the attraction of foreign technicians and techniques, due to its pioneer characteristics, mainly in Engineering and Finance, which had decisive impacts in the national context. Chronologically, this dissertation focuses the period until 1891, which is the moment of a severe economic and financial crisis that changes the paradigm about the understanding of railroad transport in Portugal.

Texte intégralThis study explores the intersection of the developments in the growing advertising, railroad, and automotive sectors of the U.S. economy. It examines the latter two sectors’ advertising to the elite by focusing on how industries that targeted the luxury market used fine art to emphasize and underscore the exceptionalism of that high-end market compared with the mass market. It does so by looking at the transition from using art as a decorative component unrelated to the product to using art specifically designed to advertise a product or experience. In the literature, advertising history has been delineated rather narrowly as the history of advertising to the mass consumer or as the history of advertising a specific type of product. This work broadens the focus in advertising history to show that luxury advertisers, as a sub-category of advertisers, developed particular advertising strategies, which recognized and exploited the relationship between their respective service or product, and a consciously selected audience for their respective advertisements. It shows that high art became a differentiating characteristic of advertising strategies aimed at the social elite market. This work also proposes the need for adding a specific timeline for the development of luxury advertising to the broad, more generally known outline of advertising history.
