Résumé :
This paper deals with the structure, activity, and liquidation of the Danube-Sava Vicinal Railway Stock Company during the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes/Yugoslavia. The company, founded in 1912, was based in Budapest and constructed the following railway lines: Vukovar-Ilača and Šid-Sremska Rača-Sava. These private railway lines were exploited by the state. The stock company was solvent. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the company’s headquarters moved from Budapest to Zagreb. Shortly after the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovens/Yugoslavia, the railway lines were exploited by the Directorate of State Railways in Zagreb, but after 1921 they came under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of State Railways in Belgrade. According to the Agreement of February 7, 1931, the state redeemed the railway lines of the abovementioned company and thus the company ceased to exist. The company went into liquidation in 1932 and was shut down on April 12, 1933.

Résumé :
This research examined the impact and challenges of globalization on railway transport sector in Africa. The study employed two railway companies as sample, state-owned railway company and private owned company. Using questionnaire as research instruments, data were collected and analyzed with simple percentages and non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis statistical tools. The major findings of the study were that: (a) the problem of competition and poor technology are the greatest challenges; (b) Railway companies with fewer globalization challenges perform significantly much better than those with more challenges; (c) Managers with positive attitude toward globalization perform significantly better than those with negative attitude and; (d) Railway state-owned receives government’s support but not enough to warrant its competitiveness. The study concluded that for railway sector to continue surviving in this globalization era, governments must immediately step up and render support to railway transport sector as opposed to only supporting road sector.

Abstract: In 1904, a group of businessmen arrived in Brazil to invest and explore rail transport. Their main representative was Percival Farquhar, who performed activities ranging from utilities such as power distribution to transportation. In 1906, the group creates Brazil Railway Company, a holding company, and takes over the vast majority of Brazilian railroad concessions. Its activities were concentrated mainly in the South and Southeast of the country. Farquhar's administration arrived until the 1920s, when management changed due to an economic crisis. The Brazil Railway Company has peculiar characteristics: it has developed, in addition to rail transportation, colonization and extractive activities, such as the exploitation of timber in the South and frozen beef. Our research aims to study the railway activities of this holding in the South and Southeast of the country, from 1904 to 1920. We use as source the official documents of the company itself, periodicals and Ministerial Reports, as well as personal documentation, such as letters and Crafts of Farquhar and other members of the group

Hudson, Sarah J. « Attitudes to investment risk amongst West Midland canal and railway company investors, 1760-1850 ». Thesis, University of Warwick, 2001. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/36407/.

Résumé :
Attitudes to environmental and investment risk are examined to determine whether they were a defining characteristic of middle-class behaviour in the period 1760 to 1850. Approximately 6,000 investors in eleven canal companies and seven railway companies were investigated to determine whether evaluation and mitigation of investment risk is determined by socio-economic background and gender. Investment risk was defined as inadequate access to, and imperfect interpretation of, information. The effectiveness of information transfer through public and private spheres was examined and the effect of differential access to these information conduits, as a consequence of gender or socio-economic background, was investigated. Investors' response to the risk environment of early death, war and unpredictable economic cycles was examined. Each canal company and the group of railway companies was ranked according to the level of investment risk during both the construction and operating period, using a mix of quantitative and qualitative tests. The risk preferences of 'economic' and 'financial' investors were compared. The strategies used by each group of investor to mitigate risk were examined. The study provides new evidence of the effective transmission of national market sentiment by the 1770s, but reveals that the physical market in canal company shares remained local and continued its separate existence long after the institutionalised national market for railway shares was established. Perceptible differences in the risk assessment and risk mitigation strategies of different groups of investors were observed. This was attributed to differential access to information, which in turn was attributed to gender and social, political and religious affiliation. The study provides evidence that although differences in behaviour were observed amongst groups within the sample population, it shared common investment strategies and that attitudes to risk and risk mitigation should be considered as valid criteria for class differentiation.

Résumé :
Since the completion of the CPR, the railway has held an important place in the Canadian imagination as a symbol of national unity, industry, and cooperation. It would seem to follow, given the widely held belief that national literatures help to engender national self-recognition in their readers, that Canadian literature would make incessant use of the railway to address themes of national community and identity. This assumption is false. With a few notable exceptions, Canadian literature has in fact made very little deliberate effort to propagate the idea that the railway is a vital symbol of Canadian unity and identity.
Literary depictions of the railway do, however, exhibit a tension between communitarian and individualist values that may itself lie at the heart of the Canadian character. Some of the earliest representations of the railway, in travel narratives of the late nineteenth century, make explicit reference to the notion that the railway was a sign and a product of a common national imagination. But poets of this period virtually ignored the railway for fear that its presence would disturb the peaceful contemplation, and thus the identity, of the individuals who populated the pastoral spaces of their verse. Modern poets did eventually manage to include the train in their work, but used it most often as a vehicle to continue the private musings of their individual lyric speakers rather than to explore the terrain of the national consciousness. One prominent exception to this tendency is E. J. Pratt's Towards the Last Spike, in which imposing individuals such as Sir John A. Macdonald and William Van Horne and thousands of unnamed rail workers combine their efforts in order to construct the railway, which stands as a symbol of how individuals and communities can work together in the national interest. Canadian fiction demonstrates the same impulses as Canadian poetry by using the railway as a means of depicting the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of individuals, but it also challenges the myth of the railway's creation of a unitary national culture by showing how diverse communities---of race, class, and region---imagine their relationship to the railway in very different ways.
The varied character of Canada's literary treatment of one of the country's central national symbols suggests that a tension between individualism and communitarianism also informs Canadian literature itself, whose writers have used the railway to fulfill their goals in individual texts but have rarely employed it as a symbol of national community.

No impulso do progresso no Brasil Império do século XIX, surgem as primeiras ferrovias.
This thesis focuses on Litchurch, the railway suburb of Derby, the headquarters of the Midland Railway Company and its workforce, during the period 1840-1900, It examines the consequences of factory paternalism and company loyalty for the construction of 'community', exploring the connections between work, family, and wider social and political life. It begins by looking at Derby as a county town where an early alliance between Whigs and Liberals resulted in the political dominance of the town by a group of Liberal-radical textile manufacturers as a form of extended factory village. There is then a discussion of railway paternalism which investigates the many differences between the family firm and the corporate railway company. The relationship between the railways and the state is examined, through the twin theorization of the railway within the state-intrinsic to national integrity and as a state in microcosm- a form of space management derived from military and civil government. The role of Derby as headquarters of the M.R.is then considered: its decision making and service function; the technological mix of productive techniques; and the distinctive relationship between public and private space. A model of company loyalty based on the experience of the physical and organizational space of the railway company is developed through the notions of the career and the appropriation to the self of organisational space, the 'bailiwick'. The spatial and social structure of Litchurch is examined and its marriage and residence patterns. In the discussion of social institutions, churches, recreation and self-help, the tensions are explored between vertical integration and horizontal stratification which are intrinsic to corporate culture. The extent and limits of collective action in terms of local and national consciousness are then considered. A model of community is then proposed, founded on the routine practices of everyday life, which recognises the multiplicity of motivations and experiences subsumed within the symbolic affirmations of collective solidarity. It concludes with an examination of the antagonism between the county town of Derby, with its history and expectations of paternal intervention, and the corporate Midland Railway 1 which was economically, socially and politically independent of local systems.

Résumé :
Japanese National Railways (JNR) has been privatized in 1987. As Kurosaki [45] stated, during the era of JNR, it accumulated heavy debts, especially in the freight operating area as railways in Japan are passenger-dominated. The conglomerate of Japanese domestic railway operators consists of 6 passenger companies and the seventh one is dedicated to freight operations and transport. Passenger rail transport companies are divided regionally and certainly operate passengers’ trains only. These companies are Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido), East Japan Railway Company (JR East), West Japan Railway Company (JR West), Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai), Shikoku Railway Company (JR Shikoku), Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) and additionally Shinkansen Holding Corporation for high-speed rail transport [40]. By the way, it also includes the Railway Communication Company, Rail Information Systems Company, Railway Technical Research Institute, and Japanese National Railways Settlement Corporation [41]. Each of these transportation companies has in disposal their infrastructure and facilities in contrast to Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight), the company which operates freight transport. According to [45], JR Freight forms a vertically separated structure, while all the JR passenger companies comprise a vertically integrated structure. JR Freights consists of 6 branches: Kyushu, Kansai, Tokai, Kanto, Tohoku, Hokkaido [40]. JR Freights rents infrastructure from other companies [45], which makes freight transport dependent on time windows between passengers’ transport (more information related to that topic is mentioned hereafter). It does not have own its tracks; however, it has in disposal its own stations, yards, and facilities for freight trains. JR Freights, as many other companies in Japan (e.g. Shizutetsu, Suzuyo – sample companies are mentioned after discussions on the topic during grant in Japan with Prof. Koichi Shintani – private correspondence) is carrying about several different kinds of business, i.e. freight services, warehousing, car park operation, advertising, indemnity and other non-life insurance agency services, vehicle services, general civil engineering and construction design, project execution and management, incidental and related business operations
