Résumé :
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to simultaneously investigate a variety of factors related to assignment completion (AC) (i.e. task orientation, cooperation, teacher feedback, time management and time spent on AC).Design/methodology/approachThe study relied on a self-report survey to assess students' perceptions in relation to six variables. Participants included 1,106 undergraduate students from six public Thai universities. Analysis involved structural equation modeling.FindingsThis study provided new results related to task orientation as the strongest predictor of AC and time management. Cooperation and feedback improved AC with time management as an intervening variable. Time management and feedback did not predict time spent on AC.Research limitations/implicationsFuture studies might explore the potential range of assignments that, for example, count for a higher portion of the grade versus those that are less or unimportant in terms of the course. Future studies might also look at the role of group assignments in relation to completion. Semi-structured interviews or observations might provide insights into how students manage their time and why task orientation has the most effect on AC. Future research might investigate more specifically at what point time management does or does not affect completion. In general, given the growth of online learning and contexts in which students may be increasingly called on to complete assignments independently, factors such as those investigated in this study will require more attention in varying countries and contexts, generically and for individual subjects.Practical implicationsInstructional designers and instructors can promote task orientation through reliance on strategic scaffolding. For designing a task-oriented environment, instructors need to offer challenging assignments. Instructors should also assign work that encourages motivation, effort and achievement. To ensure that cooperative learning positively affects time management, instructors and designers can allot specific in-class time for completion of tasks, reliance on flipped classroom activities and student conversations regarding time restrictions and time-management skills. Instructors can be supported to help them provide appropriate types of feedback, as well as ideas for implementing the feedback in practice.Originality/valueLittle research has been conducted on AC in higher education. Those studies that have been conducted have focused on the elementary and secondary levels. Furthermore, studies have not always taken into account the complex relationships between different factors that can potentially influence AC.

Abstract Results from a June 2020 survey on comfort with two forms of artificial companion (AC) robots in normal compared with pandemic times will be presented. 1,082 adults age 21-92 (mean 64) completed the online survey for a response rate of 45%. Significantly greater comfort is reported with small AC robots relative to larger human-shaped robots in both normal and pandemic times. In bivariate and adjusted models, younger age and male gender were most commonly associated with greater comfort with AC robots. Most participants (68.7%) did not think an AC robot would make them feel less lonely. About half (52.8 %) of the participants reported that they probably or definitely would want their facial expressions to be read, while a minority (15.0%) were at least somewhat comfortable with AC robots recording their conversations. The most common person participants wanted these data types shared with is themselves, a spouse/partner, and medical provider.

Résumé :
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to gain a closer understanding of how teachers’ identities are coconstructed and shaped through their interactions. The Conversation Analysis (CA) approach was used to collect and analyze naturally-occurring spoken interaction. An experienced foreign language teacher was video-recorded while she was teaching English to a mixed-intermediate adult class in a monolingual Spanish setting. A two-hour lesson was transcribed in detail followingthe transcription system adapted from van Lier (1988b) and Johnson (1995). Three extracts of classroom conversation were analyzed at a micro-level of interpretation in an emic-empirical perspective in terms of the IRF/E cycle (Initiation-Response-Feedback/Evaluation), turn-takingand repair. Results showed that the interactional flow of the lesson was constructed and maintained through asymmetric and empowered relations. The teacher seemed to determine, control and regulate most of the social actions that took place in the classroom, most of which were also entirely designed on a goal-oriented basis. The structure and implications of such an embedded institutional interaction might contribute to raising teacher awareness towards the effect of such apedagogically restricted foreign language learning atmosphere.Key words: Identity, classroom talk and interaction, conversation analysis.

AbstractTo objectively and quantitatively study transcribed protocols of design conversations, we apply a semantic analysis approach based on dynamic semantic networks of nouns. We examined the applicability of the approach focused on a dynamic evaluation of the design problem solving process in engineering design educational settings. Using a case of real-world case, we show that the approach is able to determine the time dynamics of semantic factors such as level of abstraction, polysemy, information content, and quantify convergence/divergence in engineering design conversations.

Kata kunci: semantik, sintaksis, subjek, predikat, argumen Abstract Research on semantic roles in Samawa language has not been comprehensively done. To support the ef- forts of fostering and developing Samawa language, descriptive studies like this study are always needed. This study is focused on the role of verb valency one, two, and three in Samawa language, especially in Sumbawa Besar Dialect and aimed to describe their semantic roles. The theory used in this study is syntax structural theory. The data were collected using two methods realized by observing and listening to the conversation. The collected data were then analyzed using comparative method. Results of data analysis indicated that syntactically one-valence verbs require argument which semantically re ies process, ac- tion, and constant meaning. While two-valence verb requires arguments which semantically re ies action, such as verbs Sangode (to make something smaller), Samasak (to cook), and Pina (to make). These kind of verbs syntactically require two sentence arguments. While three-valence verb which semantically shows benefective meaning needs the presence of three sentence arguments. In 2014, I embarked on a cross-Canada journey, visiting artists in their studios. Through interviews with artists and photograph documentation of the studios, I sought to understand the creative processes that occur within these spaces through art making. This visual essay draws from metaphors used by artists to describe a studio alongside photographs that I took to reveal my visual exploration of the space and my visual analysis and interpretation of the metaphors. Through the use of these metaphors alongside the photographs, I propose that a studio is more than a room, but rather a way of thinking. Furthermore, I reflect on how we might embrace these metaphors to imagine ways of fostering a creative educational space.

Résumé :
Purpose: ASCO identified oncologist-patient conversations about cancer costs as an important component of high-quality care. However, limited data exist characterizing the content of these conversations. We sought to provide novel insight into oncologist-patient cost conversations by determining the content of cost conversations in breast cancer clinic visits. Methods: We performed content analysis of transcribed dialogue from 677 outpatient appointments for breast cancer management. Encounters featured 677 patients with breast cancer visiting 56 oncologists nationwide from 2010 to 2013. Results: Cost conversations were identified in 22% of visits (95% CI, 19 to 25) and had a median duration of 33 seconds (interquartile range, 19 to 62). Fifty-nine percent of cost conversations were initiated by oncologists (95% CI, 51 to 67), who most commonly brought up costs for antineoplastic agents. By contrast, patients most frequently brought up costs for diagnostic tests. Thirty-eight percent of cost conversations mentioned cost-reducing strategies (95% CI, 30 to 46), which most commonly sought to lower patient costs for endocrine therapies and symptom-alleviating treatments. The three most commonly discussed cost-reducing strategies were: switching to a lower-cost therapy/diagnostic, changing logistics of the intervention, and facilitating copay assistance. Conclusion: We identified cost conversations in approximately one in five breast cancer visits. Cost conversations were mostly oncologist initiated, lasted < 1 minute, and dealt with a wide range of health care expenses. Cost-reducing strategies were mentioned in more than one third of cost conversations and often involved switching antineoplastic agents for lower-cost alternatives or altering logistics of diagnostic tests.

Résumé :
This study is set to investigate the purposes behind interruptions and the meanings of silences in conversations. The data are taken from three casual conversations among friends. To analyze the data, the recorded conversations are first transcribed based on Jefferson’s the Glossary of Transcript Symbols (Jefferson, 2004). The transcribed conversations are analyzed using turn-taking approach in Conversation Analysis. To interpret the results of analysis, inferential method is applied. As the findings, the writers find that speakers interrupt for two purposes: to complete turns and to cut them. To go deeper, speakers interrupt when they have shared knowledge and/or similar perspective on something. In terms of silence, the meanings behind it are highly dependent on what are uttered prior to or after the occurrence of silence. Silences can indicate topic switch, speaker’s wish to continue the same topic, and disagreement. In a conversation, silences lead to awkward situations among speakers and show troubles in conversation flows.

Résumé :
The present paper is an attempt to evaluate the applicability of Grice’s Co-operative Principle and Conversational Maxims, as one of the outstanding models in Pragmatics, to some selected Quranic conversations. Grice’s model is regarded as template for the flow of conversations and interactions held between people. Quran, as a Holy Text in Islam, contains many speech events, i.e., situations wherein conversations take place. In the stories narrated in Quran, there are situations in which, as the ordinary life of the human beings, participants converse with one another. In this study , the researchers examine the applicability of the conversation model of Grice to the Quranic conversations. To this end, the researchers have quoted some verses from Quran, first in Arabic along with their translations in English , and analysed them in light of Grice’s model of conversation analysis. Findings indicate that in the Quranic conversations there are occasions where the maxims of conversation are observed and in some other cases not observed. This fact attests the universality of Grice’s model.

Objectives This study investigates medical conversations in Chinese between doctors and patients in medical Chinese textbooks compiled in Korea from the conversation analytic perspective. Methods This study incorporates a conversation-analytic approach into the design of medical Chinese textbooks. Results The results indicate that medical Chinese textbooks do not properly present information on the conversation structures, rules, and characteristics essential to construct interactive conversations. Conclusions This study suggests that exposing learners to actual conversations is the most effective way to draw attention to the detail in real-life talk-in-interactions. By using authentic spoken language, learners can learn and practice interactional details, including turn-taking, sequences, linguistic features etc. Furthermore, it is important to apply conversation analytic research findings to enable learners to systematically understand, analyze, and communicate fluently in real medical conversations.

This study attempts to uncover what the recurring patterns of interaction in informal conversations are. It is also interested in finding out which recurring patterns of interaction dominate in informal conversations and how these recurring patterns of interaction play out in informal conversations. Data used in the study includes only recordings of naturally occurring conversations of close friends in informal settings. The researcher meticulously transcribed the data using the conventions proposed in the Jefferson Notation System. In Conversation Analysis (CA), transcription is part of data analysis. The transcription/analysis reveals that four main recurring patterns characterize informal conversations among friends: Adjacency Pairs, Topic Change, Figurative Language and Dysfluency. The study further reveals the fact that Adjacency pairs is a very dominant recurring pattern in friendly informal conversations. As a form of turn-taking, Adjacency pairs largely characterized the conversations compared to the other three recurring patterns. Finally, the study underscores the fact that friendly informal conversations stay focused on selected topics with very little or no change of topic. Mid-way between the little or no topic change and the dominance of Adjacency pairs are dysfluencies and rhetorical questions. This article proposes the study, control and analysis of the topology of an AC–AC modular multilevel converter, known in the literature as the Hexverter. The Hexverter is capable of converting the energy between two AC systems with a reduced number of elements, if compared with other modular multilevel topologies, which makes this topology attractive in AC–AC applications. However, there are few studies about the Hexverter in the literature, so this work presents its operation principle, conducts modeling, and proposes a control scheme for the converter’s proper operation, validating the operation and control via hardware-in-the-loop emulation.

This study is an analysis of WhatsApp conversations among undergraduate students of Joseph Ayo Babalola University. Five conversations were collected from five undergraduate students. The conversations were then forwarded to the researcher’s phone. Screen shots of each conversation was taken so as to use it as it is on the WhatsApp pages of the owners that are kind enough to release their phones. Pragmatics is the theoretical framework used for the study. The power of influence of given contexts is revealed on messages, on speaker’s meaning and speaker’s intention in the selected conversations among undergraduate student. The power of emoji and smileys which are the digital version of body language in reducing ambiguity and adding emotional context to what is said is revealed in the selected conversations among undergraduate students in Joseph Ayo Babalola University. We conclude by suggesting that more smileys and emojis be used by conversationalits, since phones even suggest them as you type your conversations. WhatsApp is also used for formal instructions between teachers and students, so more teachers should imbibe the culture of using it for passing instructions to their students. Lastly, seminars and workshops can be organized by government institutions and private organizations to train instructors especially in the higher institutions of learning, on WhatsApp technology and proper usage.

Résumé :
Mental illness is one of the most pressing public health issues of our time. While counseling and psychotherapy can be effective treatments, our knowledge about how to conduct successful counseling conversations has been limited due to lack of large-scale data with labeled outcomes of the conversations. In this paper, we present a large-scale, quantitative study on the discourse of text-message-based counseling conversations. We develop a set of novel computational discourse analysis methods to measure how various linguistic aspects of conversations are correlated with conversation outcomes. Applying techniques such as sequence-based conversation models, language model comparisons, message clustering, and psycholinguistics-inspired word frequency analyses, we discover actionable conversation strategies that are associated with better conversation outcomes.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper presents the small signal modeling using the state space averaging technique and reliability analysis of a three-phase z-source ac-ac converter. By controlling the shoot-through duty ratio, it can operate in buck-boost mode and maintain desired output voltage during voltage sag and surge condition. It has faster dynamic response and higher efficiency as compared to the traditional voltage regulator. Small signal analysis derives different control transfer functions and this leads to design a suitable controller for a closed loop system during supply voltage variation. The closed loop system of the converter with a PID controller eliminates the transients in output voltage and provides steady state regulated output. The proposed model designed in the RT-LAB and executed in a field programming gate array (FPGA)-based real-time digital simulator at a fixedtime step of 10 μs and a constant switching frequency of 10 kHz. The simulator was developed using very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL), making it versatile and moveable. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation results are presented to justify the MATLAB simulation results during supply voltage variation of the three phase z-source ac-ac converter. The reliability analysis has been applied to the converter to find out the failure rate of its different components.

Résumé :
Abstract In the modern power system, small scale versions of the power grid termed as Microgrid are being greatly used because of the practical, economic and environmental advantages over conventional structure. Microgrid as the word itself suggests (micro-small and grid-interconnection of different elements) is the advanced technology that is being currently endorsed for future power systems in electrical engineering world. Transients are produced in microgrids due to the fluctuating nature of loads and the irregular behaviour of renewable power generation, particularly whenever the transition from grid linked to islanded state happens. In this paper, for controlling the transients during the transition in islanded mode in microgrid comprising of various energy resources like Diesel Generator, Solar Photovoltaic System, Energy Storage System, Flux Coupling Type Super Conducting Fault Current Limiter (FSFCL) is used. By incorporating the FSFCL in the microgrid, transient behaviour of the microgrid is greatly improved. The model analysis is done using the MATLAB’s Simulink Software and the output results in presence and absence of Flux coupling type SFCL is compared. The output results which are obtained show the supremacy of the suggested device in reducing the transients in microgrid.

Résumé :
In casual conversations, Japanese people do not refer to their intimacies saying “We are close this much.” It is difficult to create special scales for intimacies because the term of “Intimacy” is too abstract and vague. However, don’t Japanese people really scale their intimacies during their conversations? In this study, the researcher aimed to describe strategies of intimacies in Japanese using method of Conversational Analysis onto dating couple’s casual internet chat data and analyzed “how people show their intimacies to opponent through the conversations.” For conclusion we can say; Japanese people tend to say “I know you” in indirect way to emphasize the opponent’s “the illusion of transparency”.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT: Rapeseed ( Brassica napus L.) with purple-red leaf is a valuable resource for plant breeder. It was utilized in breeding program as a morphological marker, and the source of resistance gene to biotic or abiotic stress due to its anthocyanin content (AC). However, the inheritance of AC and the correlation with chlorophyll content (CC) in rapeseed leaf are still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the gene action and heritability of AC and CC in a 10-Zi006 × 10-4438 rapeseed cross using generation mean analysis. The results indicated that AC and CC were controlled by main gene effect and non-allelic interactions. The AC was mainly controlled by genetic effect. However, the genetic effect and non-genetic effect were both important for CC. In addition, the total fixable gene effects was higher than unfixable gene effects for AC, but opposite results was found for CC. Both negative and positive correlations between AC and CC were obtained in different generations.

Résumé :
This present research aims at identifying register used in the conversations among petroleum engineers by examining the linguistic feature which is viewed from the aspect of the field, the tenor and the mode of discourse of the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach. Findings show that in the field of discourse, all terms of register found in the experiential domain analysis function as technical terms, of which the two major forms of nouns and verbs (i.e., single-word and compound/phrasal word forms) are the most frequent categories identified among other kinds of technical terms. The goal orientation appears to have both short and long term while the social activity results in exchanges among participants. In the tenor of discourse, the agentive role is said to be equal and the social role is considered as non-hierarchic. The social distance within the interaction is said to be minimal which is excessively characterized by the use of informal form of expressions. In the mode of discourse, the language role exists equally of both constitutive and ancillary identified by the use of present simple tense and non-present tenses, that is, future simple, past simple and present perfect. The channel is in phonic form. The medium is in spoken with visual contact as it is largely characterized by the use of endophoric reference as well as pronouns.

Résumé :
e18638 Background: Immunotherapy terminology is often complex and can be difficult for patients to understand, threatening both informed consent and patient-centered communication. Improving patient-centered communication is fundamental to fostering a quality provider-patient relationship and has been shown to positively impact the length of time to initiating treatment and to optimize patient outcomes. The aim of this study is to determine whether patients understand basic immunotherapy terminology and if a provider defining the term improves patient understanding. Methods: Conversations between oncology providers and patients discussing immunotherapy for the first time, either as standard of care or as part of a clinical trial, were observed, audio recorded and transcribed (n = 39). Technical terms used in the conversation were noted by the research assistant. With consent, patients were interviewed post-conversation to assess their understanding of these technical terms used by the provider (n = 39). Comparisons of the terms (correct vs. incorrect) were conducted using chi-square tests or Fisher’s exact tests, where appropriate, for categorical variables, and using ANOVA for continuous variables. Results: Participants were mostly white (79.5%), had some college education (55.3%), had a personal income of > = $50k (56.7%), and had a family member with cancer (54.1%). The term ‘immunotherapy’ was the most difficult term for participants to understand with less than half (19/39; 48.7%) correctly defining it. The only demographic characteristic that was significantly correlated with understanding ‘immunotherapy’ was having a family member with cancer (p = 0.031). Immunotherapy agents, such as Pembro and Nivolumab, were defined correctly by patients 65% (19/29) of time). Interestingly ‘immune system’ was well understood (23/26; 88.5%). Providers defined immunotherapy in 97.4% of conversations. However, there was no correlation between having a provider define immunotherapy in the conversation, and the likelihood of participants correctly defining the term in the post-conversation interview (p = 0.487).The immune system was defined in 92.3% of conversations (n = 26), and defining immune system in the conversation was correlated with increased patient understanding (p = 0.009). Conclusions: Analysis of patient-provider conversations shows that patients have difficulty understanding some immunotherapy terminology. Since immunotherapy is a relatively new therapy, it may be more difficult for providers to translate it into lay language, which could be why patients lack understanding of ’immunotherapy’, even when provided with a definition. Since patient understanding of key terminology is essential for not only enhancing patient-centered communication, but for improving informed consent and optimizing patient outcomes, educational interventions should be developed to improve understanding.

Résumé :
This article establishes an AC square-wave SAW arc model, and the arc characteristic of the AC square-wave is analyzed by the model. The model uses the arc voltage as the feedback of closed-loop control considering the characteristic of AC wave. The AC square-wave arc is described by the first-order differential equation. A time constant can be draw from this model, which shows the self-regulation ability of the arc. The impact of the AC square-wave SAW parameters on the current and voltage waveform can be obtained from this model. The relationship between arc stability and welding parameters can be discussed by the model. The research provides guidance for the AC square-wave submerged arc welding arc closed loop control strategy.
