Ordálias da Interpretação analisa ordálias medievais, a leitura de dados no polígrafo e alguns métodos de tortura, ao mesmo tempo que lê textos como Hamlet e Macbeth. Este livro descreve a ambição por uma pedra de toque que demonstre a veracidade, ou autenticidade, de certas entidades. De notar que pedra-de-toque – basanos (Βάσαυος) – era um termo usado para denominar a pedra com que se testava em contextos mercantis a qualidade do ouro, mas que designava igualmente a ideia de teste, tortura e torturador. Para os intérpretes mencionados neste livro, a pedra de toque, que pode ser um objecto, uma pessoa ou um teste, teria a capacidade de nos auxiliar a distinguir amigos de inimigos, de identificar a qualidade de alguns versos e de iluminar a verdade. Argumenta-se, todavia, que a capacidade de fazer juízos precisos deriva de um entendimento técnico de interpretação conduzida por indivíduos hábeis, observando-se que a capacidade de descobrir “a verdade” depende da perícia de cada examinador, da sua intuição, da capacidade para aprender um método ou uma técnica específica, de detectar erros e fazer perguntas (qualidades importantes na actividade de um crítico literário).

In this chapter we outline the key principles in design and analysis of trials for mental health. The chapter focuses on randomized controlled trials as these are the gold-standard trial design, which minimizes confounding due to other factors and enables us to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the intervention. Other key principles of trial design discussed in the chapter include methods to develop a clearly stated, testable research hypothesis, definition of well-defined outcomes, appropriate choice of the control condition, masking of providers and participants where possible, realistic sample size estimates, and appropriate data monitoring and statistical analysis plans. The chapter also outlines alternatives to the parallel arm superiority trial design, such as equivalence and non-inferiority trials, cross-over, stepped wedge, fixed adaptive, and patient preference trial designs.

This chapter develops testable hypotheses of when Navigation by Judgment will be more or less successful. It develops theory as to why environmental predictability and project external verifiability play important mediating roles in the relationship between navigation strategy and success. The chapter argues that returns to Navigation by Judgment will rise as environmental unpredictability rises and as task verifiability falls. The chapter also introduces the quantitative and qualitative data that will be used in chapters 6 and 7 and discusses quantitative and qualitative data-collection methods at some length. The chapter also operationalizes for quantitative analysis the key variables, including Project Success, the propensity of international development organizations to Navigate by Judgment, and environmental unpredictability.

After having discussed how agreement can determine Case in Chapter 4, this chapter moves on to discuss how Case can determine (and restrict) agreement. In many languages, the verb can only agree with arguments without overt case-marking. In others, accusative or dative arguments can agree as well. The distribution of agreement and case-marking is highly systematic, which has led researchers to propose that if a language allows agreement with any argument, this must include arguments without case-marking. It is shown that this analysis can capture such generalizations and extend them to the domain of ditransitive clauses, as well. This provides further evidence for analyses of Case as hierarchically organized sets of features, and shows that the framework argued for can make testable predictions.

Previous research on female intrasexual competition, especially but not only for matings or mateships, has largely been conducted using convenience samples of women of undergraduate status and therefore generally between the ages of 17 and 22. Even among such articles including women over 25, the majority do not focus on mate competition. There is a priori reason, however, to believe that intrasexual competition for matings and mateships would extend and change beyond this life stage. This chapter provides an overview of the literature on female intrasexual competition over women’s reproductive careers, discusses factors that should result in predictable changes in female intrasexual competition as women age, and proposes testable hypotheses that should help guide future research in this area of research. Based on this analysis, new theories concerning reproductive advantage derivable from acquiring the status of successful mother are proposed.

This article offers an overview of different variants of trust games and shows how game-theoretic modeling can contribute to an analysis of conditions for placing and honoring trust in such games. The focus is on explaining trust rather than on explaining consequences of trust for individual behavior or for outcomes such as societal cohesion or economic prosperity. Specifically, game-theoretic modeling allows for analyzing how the “embeddedness” of trust games in long-term relations between actors and in networks of relations can be a basis for informal norms and institutions of trust. Game-theoretic modeling also allows for analyzing actors’ incentives to modify embeddedness characteristics so that informal norms and institutions of trust become feasible. We discuss how game-theoretic models can be used to derive testable predictions for experiments with trust games and sketch empirical evidence from such experiments.

Abduction was introduced by Peirce, first as an abstract logical concept, and secondly as an epistemological model, the first step of inquiry: hypothesizing. In response to doubt, abduction builds a plausible and testable, but not yet tested, hypothesis. Peirce, in his later writings, outlined the further extension of abduction to the analysis of invention as a social process of action. In this chapter, abduction is characterized as a collective effort to invent new habits for the future. Organization scholars have used this notion for methodological reflection, but rarely involved it when theorizing the emergence of novelty in organizations. After recalling the original logical and epistemological definitions of abduction by Peirce, this chapter presents a case study from the area of urban planning that suggests applying the theory of abduction to organizational or inter-organizational doubtful and exploratory situations. The implications of this view for organization research and managerial practices are discussed.

Theory shapes how data is collected and analyzed in at least three ways. Theoretical concepts inform how we collect data because data attempt to capture and reflect those concepts. Theory provides testable hypotheses that direct our research. Theory also helps us draw conclusions from the results of empirical research. Meanwhile, research using quantitative methods seeks to be rigorous and reproducible. Mathematical models develop the logic of a theory carefully, while statistical methods help us judge whether the evidence matches the expectations of our theories. Quantitative scholars tend to specialize in one approach or the other. The interaction of theory and data for them thus concerns how models and statistical analysis draw on and respond to one another. In the abstract, they work together seamlessly to advance scientific understanding. In practice, however, there are many places and ways this abstract process can stumble. These difficulties are not unique to rigorous methods; they confront any attempt to reconcile causal arguments with reality. Rigorous methods help by making the issues clear and forcing us to confront them. Furthermore, these methods do not ensure arguments or empirical judgments are correct; they only make it easier for us to agree among ourselves when they do.

Este estudo objetiva avaliar o desenvolvimento motor, estado nutricional, nível de mercúrio e perfil socioeconômico de crianças residentes na Ilha de Cotijuba, Pará, Brasil, na faixa etária de 5 a 10 anos. Metodologicamente, o desenvolvimento motor foi avaliado através do protocolo TGMD – 2 (Test of Gross Motor Development, Secunde Edition). A avaliação do estado nutricional da amostra, utilizou o software WHO AntroPlus. A análise de mercúrio foi realizada através da metodologia de redução e espectrometria de absorção atômica por vapor frio (CVAAS) (sistema aberto de circulação do fluxo de ar), utilizando um detector de mercúrio automático, o Automatic Mercury analyzer Model HG-201 da Sanso Seisakusho Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. Para a avaliação socioeconômica da amostra, foi utilizado o instrumento CCEB 2014 (Critério de Classificação Econômica Brasil 2014) da ABEP. A análise dos dados foi realizada pelo programa SPSS 22.0, em que se adotou a estatística descritiva de tendência central, não central e dispersão e para a estatística inferencial primeiramente foi realizado o teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov para normalidade da amostra, e o Teste t independente para comparar as médias da amostra de acordo com o sexo e grupo etário. O teste de correlação de Pearson foi utilizado para analisar o grau de associação entre as variáveis. Foi adotado um nível de significância p≤0,05. O desenvolvimento motor encontrou-se na média em sua maioria, seguido por abaixo da média e, posteriormente, acima da média. Quanto ao estado nutricional, a maioria apresentou peso adequado para a idade, estatura adequada para idade e eutrofia com o aparecimento de alguns casos de sobrepeso e obesidade com o avançar da idade. O nível de exposição ao mercúrio encontrou-se abaixo do limite de tolerância biológico, com diferença significativa entre sexo. O perfil socioeconômico das famílias, na sua maioria, perteceu às classes C2 e D. A renda média bruta das famílias, majoritariamente, apresentou-se entre R$ 1277,00 e R$ 895,00. Conclui-se que a avaliação do desenvolvimento motor e os fatores intervenientes a este estão na normalidade. Análises similares devem ocorrer periodicamente para planejamento legislativo e projetos de intervenção em educação e saúde.

Prezenta culegere contine 10 teste sau 400 de grile selectate in vederea pregatirii examenului de fizica pentru admiterea la Universitatea de Medicina si Farmacie, impreuna cu baremele de corectare. Rezolvarea acestor grile asigura parcurgerea intregii programe de fizica pentru admiterea la Medicina, in concordanta cu manualele agreate si la un nivel mediu spre inalt. Problemele au fost concepute astfel incat sa raspunda unor subtilitati ale cerintelor examenului de admitere, fapt ce ar duce la obtinerea unor rezultate performante. In acest sens, sugestia este ca rezolvarea unui test sa se incadreze intr-un interval de 50 de minute. Lucrarea vine in complementaritatea Culegerii editate de UMF „Carol Davila” si in ajutorul elevilor care se pregatesc pentru o cariera de excelenta, prin modelarea unui mod de gandire critic si analitic, ata de necesar unei profesii de vocatie.

A presente obra intitulada “Discussões Jurídicas Contemporâneas” apresenta temas relevantes para quem pretende aprofundar conhecimentos ligados à justiça, os quais exercem grande poder de atração. Estudantes e profissionais do ramo podem se beneficiar da leitura dos textos apresentados no presente livro como cenário para suas tramas, a partir dos estudos desenvolvidos pelos autores que compõem essa obra. No capítulo 1, Isadora Regina Huk dos Santos e Elcio Domingues da Silva apresentam o estudo relacionado à problemática da eficácia da medida socioeducativa voltada ao trabalho na Comarca de Ponta Grossa/PR, apresentando como objetivo geral a sua análise e, como objetivo específico o resgate histórico do sistema de responsabilização advindo com a Constituição Federal de 1988, e a análise do atual sistema de responsabilização em conformidade com a eficácia do projeto: “Jovem Cidadão no Mercado de Trabalho: inclusão e desenvolvimento”. Vale observar que, nos termos do artigo 17 da Lei n.8.069/90 foram preservados o direito à liberdade, ao respeito e a dignidade, deixando de mencionar qualquer dado que possa identificar os adolescentes que fizeram parte desta pesquisa e, em conformidade com o artigo 143 da referida lei, salienta a vedação de qualquer ato judicial, policial e administrativo referentes a crianças e adolescentes a que se impute a prática de ato infracional. Interessante destacar que o estudo menciona brevemente algumas adaptações quanto ao atual cenário causado pela Pandemia do Covid-19. Já no capítulo 2, Ronan Medeiros Martins e Sandro Marcos Godoy apresentam a situação de superendividamento do consumidor e sua possível prevenção e tratamento previsto na Lei 14.181 de 2021, destacando uma análise acerca da nova sistemática proposta. O estudo pondera acerca do fenômeno do superendividamento do consumidor na sociedade atual e, posteriormente, analisa acerca da nova resolução do problema previsto na Lei 14.181 de 2021. Os autores concluíram que o superendividamento é uma situação que prejudica toda a sociedade, atingindo tanto o consumidor e sua família quanto os credores e a economia. A legislação busca reinserir o consumidor na sociedade com o tratamento do superendividamento e com a possibilidade de efetivo recebimento dos valores pelos credores, gerando benefícios à economia do país. Aline Cristina Coleto e Davi Dos Santos, no capítulo 3 abordam a temática de acidentes de trânsito no Brasil, a partir do estudo realizado que analisa os motivos da significativa quantidade de recusas em realizar teste com etilômetro, sem a prisão do infrator. O estudo analisou e apresentou diretrizes de como o Estado pode reduzir as recusas em realizar o teste com bafômetro através de intervenções na legislação atual e aprimoramento dos procedimentos nas fiscalizações. A pesquisa concluiu que há necessidade de proporcionar melhores condições de trabalho e treinamento aos agentes públicos em campo, para constatação adequada da embriaguez; encaminhamentos mais céleres, aos outros órgãos ou que tenham ferramentas legais para encaminhar diretamente ao judiciário, os infratores abordados em fiscalizações de rotina. Também, a médio e longo prazo, alterações na legislação para reduzir as recusas em realizar o teste com etilômetro. No capítulo 4, Emanuelle França Kuriu e Vitor Hugo Bueno Fogaça apresentam uma análise do efeito do incidente de desconsideração da personalidade jurídica na execução trabalhista. O objetivo geral é verificar como o incidente de desconsideração da personalidade jurídica impacta a efetividade da execução trabalhista. O estudo trata dos princípios do direito processual do trabalho, apresenta uma breve análise da parte histórica do incidente de desconsideração da personalidade jurídica no direito brasileiro, assim como sua aplicação no Direito do Trabalho e a inserção de tal mecanismo após a Lei 13.467/2017. Os autores realizaram uma pesquisa de campo com advogados do âmbito trabalhista em relação à efetividade das execuções trabalhistas, se consideram o incidente como favorável ou não, e qual a percepção do incidente de desconsideração da personalidade jurídica. O estudo demonstrou que o incidente de desconsideração da personalidade jurídica é uma ferramenta útil para a efetivação da execução trabalhista, mas depende de uma aplicação adequada para garantir que o instituto alcance plena aplicabilidade na Justiça do Trabalho.

Zen-Brain Reflections takes up where the earlier book left off. It addresses such questions as: how do placebos and acupuncture change the brain? Can neuroimaging studies localize the sites where our notions of self arise? How can the latest brain imaging methods monitor meditators more effectively? How do long years of meditative training plus brief enlightened states produce pivotal transformations in the physiology of the brain? In many chapters testable hypotheses suggest ways to correlate normal brain functions and meditative training with the phenomena of extraordinary states of consciousness. After briefly introducing the topic of Zen and describing recent research into meditation, Austin reviews the latest studies on the amygdala, frontotemporal interactions, and paralimbic extensions of the limbic system. He then explores different states of consciousness, both the early superficial absorptions and the later, major "peak experiences." This discussion begins with the states called kensho and satori and includes a fresh analysis of their several different expressions of "oneness." He points beyond the still more advanced states toward that rare ongoing stage of enlightenment that is manifest as "sage wisdom."
