Résumé :
In an alternating-current network, each edge has a complex conductance with positive real part. The response map is the linear map from the vector of voltages at a subset of boundary nodes to the vector of currents flowing into the network through these nodes. In this paper, it is proved that the known necessary conditions for a linear map to be a response map are sufficient, and we show how to construct an appropriate network for a given response map.

Résumé :
This research analyzes the level of the short circuit effect of the Iraqi super network and decides the suitable location for the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) connections in order to obtain the best short circuit reduction of the total currents of the buses in the network. The proposed method depends on choosing the transmission lines for Alternating current (AC) system that suffers from high Short Circuit Levels (SCLs) in order to reduce its impact on the transmission system and on the lines adjacent to it and this after replacing the alternating current (AC) line by direct current (DC) line. In this paper, Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E) is used to model two types of HVDC lines in an effective region of Iraqi networks and to perform comparative studies to test the location of Short Circuit Levels (SCLs) between an actual AC and AC/DC case study in a portion of the Iraqi national network. The results proved the effectiveness of this method in eliminating severe faults and unwanted short currents, and the results showed that the bipolar type is better in reducing Short Circuit Levels of the Iraqi network.

Résumé :
Carbon nanofiller–modified polymers have been the subject of intense study for years due to their potential use in diverse and far-reaching applications. The effect of nanofiller network parameters on macroscale direct current electrical transport has been thoroughly elucidated by extensive nano-to-microscale modeling. As a result, we now have great insight into how the conductive and piezoresistive properties of nanocomposites can be tailored through judicious control of the underlying nanofiller network. It is also well-known that carbon nanofiller–modified polymers possess frequency-dependent alternating current electrical properties. Even though work has been done to understand the alternating current properties of nanocomposites via experimental characterization and through the development of macroscale equivalent circuit models, much less has been done to understand how macroscale alternating current conductivity depends on microscale effects such as nanofiller alignment and aspect ratio. This is an important knowledge gap because, like direct current conductivity, the underlying nanofiller network ultimately gives rise to macroscale alternating current transport in these materials. To this end, we herein present an alternating current microscale percolation model for carbon filler–based polymer nanocomposites. After calibration against experimental complex impedance data from randomly ordered carbon nanofiber–modified epoxy, this model is used to explore the effect of carbon nanofiber alignment and aspect ratio on alternating current conductivity. These simulations show that alternating current conductivity generally increases with increasing alignment and with aspect ratio; however, the competing effects of alternating current and direct current percolation give rise to substantial variation in alternating current conductivity at low frequencies and with poor percolation. The methodology presented in this article provides a modeling tool by which nanocomposites with highly optimized alternating current properties can be developed through careful control and tailoring of nanofiller network properties for the realization of exotic, next-generation material functionality.

Résumé :
Alternating arc single-phase earth faults in 6–10 kV cable networks with insulated neutral are accompanied by over-voltages and a significant increase in the root-mean-square current value at the fault location. When evaluating the specified parameters of transient voltages and currents during arc earth faults, as a rule, the presence of higher harmonics in earth fault current is not taken into account. At the same time, in modern systems of industrial and urban electricity supply, the customers with nonlinear current-voltage characteristics are widely used. They caused a significant increase in the share of higher harmonics in earth fault currents of more than 40–55 % of the total network capacitive current determined at the fundamental frequency of 50 Hz. With such correlations between the levels of the fundamental frequency component and higher harmonics, higher harmonics can have a significant effect on the conditions of quenching and reignition of grounding arcs and, accordingly, on the parameters of transient voltages and currents in intermittent arc earth faults. Simulation in Matlab with SimPowerSystem was used to study the influence of higher harmonics in earth fault current on transient voltages and currents in 6–10 kV cable networks with insulated neutral. Modeling of alternating arc faults was carried out on the basis of existing theories of the occurrence of maximum overvoltages during arc earth faults in networks with isolated neutral developed by W. Petersen and Belyakov N.N. On the basis of computational experiments on simulation models of 6–10 kV cable networks with different values of the total capacitive current, it was shown that in the case of arc alternating earth faults the presence of higher harmonics in the earth fault current can lead to an increase in the multiplicity of overvoltages in intact phases by 13–16 % and the root-mean-square value of the current at the fault location by up to 22 %. Higher harmonics in earth fault current can have a significant effect on the conditions of extinction and reignition of the grounding arc, leading to an increase in the time of its extinction, the multiplicity of the maximum overvoltage level and root-mean-square value of fault current during alternating arc faults, which should be taken into account when evaluating the network efficiency in the isolated neutral mode.

This thesis studies the modeling and analysis of power System containing static VAR compensators (SVC). Low-order models, calculated by Hankel singular-value truncation réduction and N4Sid dynamic identification, provide the foundation for the modeling and analysis techniques. For cases where many SVCs or FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices are installed in a power System, a new subsystem structure based on thèse low-order modeling techniques has been developed. The proposed low-order models allow the computation of low-order LQG-type (Linear Quadratic Gaussian Regulator) control laws, as well as low-order robust controls, which provide a better performance relative to traditional SVC controls (proportional type). Using the subsystem structure formulated in this thesis, methods for calculating decentralized controllers for power Systems hâve been conceived. In addition, through the use of structured singular values, a new robustness analysis technique has been developed which allows the détermination of stability boundaries through the calculation of closed-loop transfer functions. The theoretical approaches in this work hâve been applied to a test power system containing 11 nodes, as well as a larger 173-node test system

Power fiow increase and environmental constraints in power Systems hâve led to FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices insertion in order to improve the power System exploitation. Thèse devices are able to cany out some funétions such as the voltage support, the power transfer control and the increase of power transfer capability. Moreover, due to their fast response time, they are an efficient tool for damping low frequency oscillations. This new FACTS devices application is important as power Systems are more and more interconnected and thereby more sensitive to inter-area eîectromechanical oscillations. However, the recourse to several FACTS devices in a power System requires the careful study of the possible controller interaction phenomena between FACTS devices and with others system éléments. This thesis deals with the analysis and resolution of dynamic phenomena due to interaction problems resulting from the insertion of one or several shunt FACTS devices. Sensitivity and influence indices are defined from the controllability and observability notions, respectively, in order to preview the interaction phenomena importance due to a FACTS device insertions and to identify the influence areas of a FACTS device. Thèse indices are applied to a two-area four-machine test system and to a simplified real 29-machine power system. Two coordination methods (" minimax " method and decentralized linear quadratic method) are used to coordinate the FACTS devices themselves and a FACTS device and PSS (Power System Stabilizer) in the two-area four-machine test system

« Network Topology Optimization with Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow ». Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.14270.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
abstract: The electric transmission grid is conventionally treated as a fixed asset and is operated around a single topology. Though several instances of switching transmission lines for corrective mechaism, congestion management, and minimization of losses can be found in literature, the idea of co-optimizing transmission with generation dispatch has not been widely investigated. Network topology optimization exploits the redundancies that are an integral part of the network to allow for improvement in dispatch efficiency. Although, the concept of a dispatchable network initially appears counterintuitive questioning the wisdom of switching transmission lines on a more regu-lar basis, results obtained in the previous research on transmission switching with a Direct Current Optimal Power Flow (DCOPF) show significant cost reductions. This thesis on network topology optimization with ACOPF emphasizes the need for additional research in this area. It examines the performance of network topology optimization in an Alternating Current (AC) setting and its impact on various parameters like active power loss and voltages that are ignored in the DC setting. An ACOPF model, with binary variables representing the status of transmission lines incorporated into the formulation, is written in AMPL, a mathematical programming language and this optimization problem is solved using the solver KNITRO. ACOPF is a non-convex, nonlinear optimization problem, making it a very hard problem to solve. The introduction of bi-nary variables makes ACOPF a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, further increasing the complexity of the optimization problem. An iterative method of opening each transmission line individually before choosing the best solution has been proposed as a purely investigative approach to studying the impact of transmission switching with ACOPF. Economic savings of up to 6% achieved using this approach indicate the potential of this concept. In addition, a heuristic has been proposed to improve the computational efficiency of network topology optimization. This research also makes a comparative analysis between transmission switching in a DC setting and switching in an AC setting. Results presented in this thesis indicate significant economic savings achieved by controlled topology optimization, thereby reconfirming the need for further examination of this idea.

Résumé :
AbstractThe established study of political networks has surged with the rise of digital social networks and modern computational analytics. Social Network Analysis (SNA) enables the study of Russia’s hybrid politics and society as it produces accurate alternative content to controlled official and semi-official statistics, providing live and detailed insight into current political processes in the country. Using six resonant political events, the chapter illustrates how SNA methods allow the designation of political communities and support the evaluation of such important questions as the presence of “echo-chambers,” the dynamic tracing of group reactions to informational events, and the detection of leaders and influencers. These methods provide a framework for the analysis of political phenomena as astroturfing and botnets, opinion mining, as well as topic and sentiment analysis.

Résumé :
AbstractContemporary Western societies have accommodated relational rights of queer people, but the link between marriage and filiation rights remains strong. However, parallel to significant alternative family projects that emerged from Black and lesbian feminist studies, current possibilities of parenting enabled by intimate citizenship rights also present interesting practices of care outside the traditional family norm. Drawing on interviews with lesbian and bisexual mothers, and with trans people whose parents were part of their networks of care, this chapter analyses how parenting practices may be a tool to (1) ascribe social visibility to sexual and gender-diverse identities and families; (2) educate children beyond a gender binary system; (3) subvert the neoliberal supremacy of paid work over motherhood; and (4) raise children in a larger network of care, beyond the couple/children norm.

Résumé :
We examine two incoherent electrooptical neural network processors. Both schemes use optical matrix-vector multiplication with feedback to model the alternating projection neural network (APNN). In the first, the Stanford matrix-vector multiplier architecture using a photographic negative as the spatial light modulator (SLM) was used. Feedback was accomplished with a detector array leading to a light emitting diode (LED) array whose intensities represent the state of the neurons. In the second architecture, active SLMs allow for the updating of the neuron interconnection matrix in real time. A Semetex magnetooptic SIGHTMOD encodes the matrix onto a light beam which is projected onto the write side of a Hughes liquid crystal light valve. Light from the LED array is reflected from the read side and the modulated intensity is detected and fed back to update the LEDs. Convergence for both implementations is assured if the stored data meet certain requirements1 and if the thermal dark current is electrically subtracted after each iteration. Although their computing power and accuracy are currently limited by the physical size of the components and the SLM display resolution, respectively, the high operating speed of the electrooptical systems make them worth studying.

Résumé :
While the application of lithium-ion batteries to propulsion has dominated the marine industry’s attention, another equally important shift is occurring. The standard alternating-current (AC) backbone of a diesel-electric is being replaced with direct current (DC). AC generators and motors remain but are connected through converters. This architecture is often referred to as a DC grid. They offer advantages such as reducing volume, weight and electrical harmonics while making it easier to interconnect DC sources like batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells. Their biggest disadvantage is developing higher fault currents in a shorter amount of time than a comparable AC network. This has required unique protection schemes and led to a challenge for existing regulatory norms.

This report introduces the Variable Frequency Impedance Tomography (VFIT) method for assessing the effectiveness of non-interruptible power supplies (sacrificial anodes) for protecting coated buried pipe. This method imposes a low-amplitude alternating voltage between the pipe and a reference electrode placed on the surface. A potentiostat/galvanostat controls the electric potential by modulating the current between the pipe and a surface counter electrode. The principle interpretive tool used in this study was an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that had been \trained\" on simulated pipe with a defective coating and on field data from a test pipe.

Résumé :
Growing global water stress caused by the combined effects of growing populations, increasing economic development, and climate change elevates the importance of managing and allocating water resources in ways that are economically efficient and that account for interdependencies between food production, energy generation, and water networks—often referred to as the “food-energy-water (FEW) nexus.” To support these objectives, this report outlines a replicable hydro-economic methodology for assessing the value of water resources in alternative uses across the FEW nexus–including for agriculture, energy production, and human consumption—and maximizing the benefits of these resources through optimization analysis. The report’s goal is to define the core elements of an integrated systems-based modeling approach that is generalizable, flexible, and geographically portable for a range of FEW nexus applications. The report includes a detailed conceptual framework for assessing the economic value of water across the FEW nexus and a modeling framework that explicitly represents the connections and feedbacks between hydrologic systems (e.g., river and stream networks) and economic systems (e.g., food and energy production). The modeling components are described with examples from existing studies and applications. The report concludes with a discussion of current limitations and potential extensions of the hydro-economic methodology.

Résumé :
Review question / Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic effects of various stem cell types, sources and routes of administration on chronic decompensated cirrhosis by using network meta-analysis. Condition being studied: Liver cirrhosis is an important public health problem that puzzles the world. It is divided into compensatory stage and decompensated stage. Once the patient enters decompensated stage, the treatment is very limited, and liver transplantation is currently the best and only approach to improve the survival rate of decompensated cirrhosis4. However, liver transplantation is difficult to be widely applied due to the lack of donor organs and high cost. Therefore, it is very important to study the alternative treatment of liver transplantation. Stem cell therapy as a promising frontier treatment for decompensated cirrhosis, is becoming one of the best feasible alternatives to liver transplantation in recent 20 years. It is very important and necessary to optimize the factors such as cell sources, types, and delivery route, etc. before taking stem cell therapy as a routine clinical treatment. It is believed that the network meta-analysis of the efficacy of various types of stem cells from different sources and routes of administration in the treatment of chronic decompensated cirrhosis can provide useful very clues for clinical practice.

Résumé :
With the energy transition to alternative fuels like ethanol and hydrogen, the use of existing pipeline networks to transport these fuels would be the most economical. Pipeline tensile and fracture toughness material property characterization would be essential for fitness-for-service for alternate fuel transportation. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Gas Transmission 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 192 states that if there is missing or inadequate material documentation, an operator must "implement a program to test pipe samples to establish material properties". The Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP) and Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP) should be established using the record evidence and integrity management, requiring material properties like grade, yield, and tensile strength. Incomplete or partial records are inadequate for establishing MOP or MAOP. The current research explores tools and technologies that can reliably assess the material properties of components of a steel pipeline from the inside of the pipeline without requiring extensive excavation. The material properties in consideration are yield strength, toughness, ductility, hardness, and fracture toughness. Additionally, chemical composition and distribution and morphology of phases and grain structure characterization would be beneficial. The long seam weld type characterization assists with pipeline integrity management. Characterization of mechanical properties, including grade, fracture behavior, and metallurgical properties, is invaluable in confirming MOP and MAOP. More importantly, material characterization allows operators to determine these pipelines' suitability for alternative fuel transportation. The research explores mainly two different ILI technologies, MFL and Eddy Current, that can be used for material property characterization. Five different ILI technology providers were contacted, and their ILI technology reviewed for material property determination. One robotic inspection technology for hardness measurement was also explored. The study reviews the technologies, provides performance measures and recommendations for future research work.

Résumé :
One common problem in omics data analysis is missing values, which can arise due to various reasons, such as poor tissue quality and insufficient sample volumes. Instead of discarding missing values and related data, imputation approaches offer an alternative means of handling missing data. However, the imputation of missing omics data is a non-trivial task. Difficulties mainly come from high dimensionality, non-linear or nonmonotonic relationships within features, technical variations introduced by sampling methods, sample heterogeneity, and the non-random missingness mechanism. Several advanced imputation methods, including deep learning-based methods, have been proposed to address these challenges. Due to its capability of modeling complex patterns and relationships in large and high-dimensional datasets, many researchers have adopted deep learning models to impute missing omics data. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the currently available deep learning-based methods for omics imputation from the perspective of deep generative model architectures such as autoencoder, variational autoencoder, generative adversarial networks, and Transformer, with an emphasis on multi-omics data imputation. In addition, this review also discusses the opportunities that deep learning brings and the challenges that it might face in this field.

Résumé :
The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.

Résumé :
Original objectives: [a] Screen an array of chickpea and wild annual Cicer germplasm for winter survival. [b] Genetic analysis of winter hardiness in domesticated x wild chickpea crosses. [c] Genetic analysis of vernalization response in domesticated x wild chickpea crosses. [d] Digital expression analysis of a core selection of breeding and germplasm lines of chickpea that differ in winter hardiness and vernalization. [e] Identification of the genes involved in the chickpea winter hardiness and vernalization and construction of gene network controlling these traits. [f] Assessing the phenotypic and genetic correlations between winter hardiness, vernalization response and Ascochyta blight response in chickpea. The complexity of the vernalization response and the inefficiency of our selection experiments (below) required quitting the work on ascochyta response in the framework of this project. Background to the subject: Since its introduction to the Palouse region of WA and Idaho, and the northern Great Plains, chickpea has been a spring rotation legume due to lack of winter hardiness. The short growing season of spring chickpea limits its grain yield and leaves relatively little stubble residue for combating soil erosion. In Israel, chilling temperatures limit pod setting in early springs and narrow the effective reproductive time window of the crop. Winter hardiness and vernalization response of chickpea alleles were lost due to a series of evolutionary bottlenecks; however, such alleles are prevalent in its wild progenitor’s genepool. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: It appears that both vernalization response and winter hardiness are polygenic traits in the wild-domesticated chickpea genepool. The main conclusion from the fieldwork in Israel is that selection of domesticated winter hardy and vernalization responsive types should be conducted in late flowering and late maturity backgrounds to minimize interference by daylength and temperature response alleles (see our Plant Breeding paper on the subject). The main conclusion from the US winter-hardiness studies is that excellent lines have been identified for germplasm release and continued genetic study. Several of the lines have good seed size and growth habit that will be useful for introgressing winter-hardiness into current chickpea cultivars to develop releases for autumn sowing. We sequenced the transcriptomes and profiled the expression of genes in 87 samples. Differential expression analysis identified a total of 2,452 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between vernalized plants and control plants, of which 287 were shared between two or more Cicer species studied. We cloned 498 genes controlling vernalization, named CVRN genes. Each of the CVRN genes contributes to flowering date advance (FDA) by 3.85% - 10.71%, but 413 (83%) other genes had negative effects on FDA, while only 83 (17%) had positive effects on FDA, when the plant is exposed to cold temperature. The cloned CVRN genes provide new toolkits and knowledge to develop chickpea cultivars that are suitable for autumn-sowing. Scientific & agricultural implications: Unlike the winter cereals (barley, wheat) or pea, in which a single allelic change may induce a switch from winter to spring habit, we were unable to find any evidence for such major gene action in chickpea. In agricultural terms this means that an alternative strategy must be employed in order to isolate late flowering – ascochyta resistant (winter types) domesticated forms to enable autumn sowing of chickpea in the US Great Plains. An environment was identified in U.S. (eastern Washington) where autumn-sown chickpea production is possible using the levels of winter-hardiness discovered once backcrossed into advanced cultivated material with acceptable agronomic traits. The cloned CVRN genes and identified gene networks significantly advance our understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying plant vernalization in general, and chickpea in particular, and provide a new toolkit for switching chickpea from a spring-sowing to autumn-sowing crop.
