Résumé :
Abstract Ultrafast all-optical switching by single femtosecond laser pulse has recently been considered as one of the most potential technologies for the application on high-speed and energy efficient memory device. Here, to ensure such a sophisticated technology to be applicable to more complex environments, we report the dependence of all-optical switching of the ferrimagnet, GdCo, on the ambient temperature. Through heating the GdCo film up to 380 K, we demonstrate the distinct magnetic behaviours and the critical laser fluences of all-optical switching under different composition of Gd. It is found that the thermal stability for AOS will be significantly improved when there are more rare-earth elements, Gd in GdCo. This work provides a deep insight into the thermal effect on helicity independent all-optical switching and will optimize the application of ultrafast technology on the spintronic devices and magnetic memories.

Résumé :
We report on a phenomenon of plasmonic dichroism observed in magnetic materials with transverse magnetization under excitation of surface plasmon polariton waves. The effect originates from the interplay of the two magnetization-dependent contributions to the material absorption, both of which are enhanced under plasmon excitation. Plasmonic dichroism is similar to circular magnetic dichroism, which is at the base of all-optical helicity-dependent switching (AO-HDS) but observed for linearly polarized light, and the dichroism acts upon in-plane magnetized films, where AO-HDS does not take place. We show by electromagnetic modeling that laser pulses exciting counter-propagating plasmons can be used to write +M or −M states in a deterministic way independent of the initial magnetization state. The presented approach applies to various ferrimagnetic materials with in-plane magnetization, exhibiting the phenomenon of all-optical switching of a thermal nature and broadens the horizons of their applications in data storage devices.

Résumé :
All-optical magnetic switching (AOS) provides a novel approach to improve writing ability and energy efficiency compared to those utilized in the mainstream magnetic data storage products. Rare earth-transition metals (RE-TM) exhibit extremely fast magnetization switching induced by one single incident linearly polarized laser pulse; however, the mechanism is still ambiguous. Here, we show by atomistic spin simulation that the laser induced spin transfer torque dominates the magnetization reversal of Fe sublattice in Gd25Fe75 alloy, and that the switching speed of Gd25Fe75 alloy is relevant to the amount of spin current. This implies that a possible helicity independent mechanism underlies the RE-TM alloy AOS process. We also find that the greater the spin current density the faster the magnetization switching, and the time magnetization reversal of Gd and Fe takes is also affected by the spin current density.

Résumé :
We experimentally demonstrate single pulse toggle switching of the magnetization of GdFeCo disks with perpendicular to film plane anisotropy, which diameter ranges from 3 μm to 400 nm using 35 fs linearly polarized laser pulses. Two different magnetic states can be observed depending on the laser fluence: either a deterministic switching of the disk magnetization or a randomly oriented disk. We report that the fluence required to observe both magnetic states show a non-monotonic behavior with disk diameter and that the smallest disks require the lowest minimum fluence for achieving single pulse all-optical helicity-independent switching. Different evolution of the fluence thresholds for both phenomenon as a function of the disk size is observed and discussed.

Résumé :
We demonstrate that in Weyl semimetals, the momentum-space helical spin texture can couple to the chirality of the Weyl node to generate a frequency-independent optical spin injection. This frequency-independence is rooted in the topology of the Weyl node. Since the helicity and the chirality are always locked for Weyl nodes, the injected spin from a pair of Weyl nodes always add up, implying no symmetry requirements for Weyl semimetals. Finally, we show that such frequency-independent spin injection is robust against multiband corrections and lattice-regularization effect and capable of realizing all-optical magnetization switching in the THz regime.
