Résumé :
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether zinc (Zn) supplementation protects against hepatic copper (Cu) accumulation in copper-loaded sheep. Forty cross-bred lambs were assigned to five experimental groups. These included the control group (C) and four treatment groups that received Cu and/or Zn supplementation (dry matter (DM) basis) over 14 weeks, as follows: Cu (450 mg Cu/kg); Zn-35 (450 mg Cu + 35 mg Zn/kg); Zn-150 (450 mg Cu + 150 mg Zn/kg); and Zn-300 (450 mg Cu + 300 mg Zn/kg). Blood, liver, and bile samples were obtained for mineral determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP–OES). The hepatic metallothionein (MT) concentrations were also determined. At the end of the experiment, hepatic Cu concentrations were higher in all Cu-supplemented groups than in C. Hepatic Cu accumulation was lower in the groups receiving the Zn supplementation than in the Cu group, although the difference was only statistically significant (66%) in the Zn-300 group. The MT concentrations tended to be higher (almost two-fold) in the Zn groups (but were not dose related) than in the C and Cu groups, and they were related to hepatic Zn concentrations. Zn supplementation at 300 mg/kg DM is useful for preventing excessive hepatic Cu accumulation in sheep exposed to high dietary concentrations of Cu.

Résumé :
The main alloying elements have a decisive influence on the type and quantity of the second phase of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy, and even on the dissolution of the second phase during solution treatment. The effect of Zn/Mg ratio on second phase dissolution during solution treatment of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrical conductivity testing. The results showed that Mg (Zn,Cu,Al)2 phase and Fe-rich phase existed in the as-deformed alloys. In addition, a small amount of Al2CuMg phase was found in the low and medium Zn/Mg ratio alloy. The number of Mg (Zn,Cu,Al)2 phases as the major second phase in the alloys was inversely proportional to the Zn/Mg ratio. Mg (Zn,Cu,Al)2 phase essentially dissolved into the matrix after solution treatment at 465°C/2h. Increasing the solution temperature and time were both beneficial to the dissolution of the Al2CuMg phase. With the increase of the solution temperature from 465°C to 475°C, the conductivity of the alloy showed a decreasing trend initially and then increased. As the solution time increased at 470°C, the electrical conductivity of the low-Zn/Mg ratio alloy decreased and then increased due to the more secondary phase. After the second phase was fully dissolved in the alloy, the electrical conductivity gradually increased with the increase of the solution time.

Résumé :
Abstract A 20-d experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of added Zn and Cu on growth performance of nursery pigs. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial treatment structure with main effects of added Zn (100 or 3,000 mg/kg of diet) and Cu (10 or 200 mg/kg of diet). Basal Zn and Cu levels (100 and 10 mg/kg, respectively) were from organic sources, while the added high levels (2,900 and 190 mg/kg, respectively) were from Zn oxide and Cu hydroxychloride. A total of 784 pigs (PIC 337 × Camborough), initially 6.0 kg, were used with 7 replicates per treatment. Experimental diets were corn, soybean meal, and whey permeate-based and contained 1.38% SID Lys. Pigs were weighed and feed disappearance measured to calculate ADG, ADFI, and G:F. Data were analyzed with SAS MIXED procedure. From d 0 to 10, there was no evidence (P > 0.10) for interactive or main effects of Zn or Cu. From d 10 to 20 and overall (d 0 to 20), there was an interaction (P < 0.05) between Zn and Cu for G:F. From d 10 to 20, pigs fed 10 mg/kg added Cu had improved G:F when 3,000 mg/kg added Zn was fed; however, pigs fed 200 mg/kg added Cu had similar G:F regardless of added Zn level. There was no evidence (P > 0.10) for interaction for ADG or ADFI, indicating an additive Zn and Cu effect. Feeding 3,000 mg/kg added Zn or 200 mg/kg added Cu improved ADG, ADFI, and final BW with the highest performance observed when feeding both 3,000 mg/kg added Zn and 200 mg/kg added Cu. In summary, feeding high levels of Zn or Cu did not impact the first 10-d postweaning performance, but Zn and Cu effects were observed in the subsequent 10-d and overall performance.

Résumé :
Thermodynamic equilibria of 27 compositions of 7075 aluminum alloy are computed using JMatPro. The maximum amount of MgZn2 phase (MP[M]) and the maximum amount of S-Al2CuMg phase (MP[S]) in each composition are taken as the objective functions. Effects of the contents of Zn, Mg and Cu on MP[M] and MP[S] are studied using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with second-order interactions. Analysis results suggest that Zn, Mg, Cu, Zn[Formula: see text]Mg and Mg[Formula: see text]Cu have a significant influence on the MP[M] with a sequence of Zn[Formula: see text]Mg[Formula: see text]Mg[Formula: see text]Cu[Formula: see text]Cu[Formula: see text]Zn[Formula: see text]Mg, whereas Zn, Mg and Cu have a significant influence on the MP[S] with a sequence of Cu[Formula: see text]Zn[Formula: see text]Mg. Predictive equations for calculating the amounts of MP[M] and MP[S] are obtained using regression analyses. With the requirement of maximum amount of MP[M] and minimum amount of MP[S] within the alloy, the optimized composition of 7075 aluminum alloy is predicted and it contains 6.1%Zn, 2.27%Mg and 1.2%Cu.

Résumé :
Sperm transcripts aside from providing genetic material have an eminent role in post-fertilization events and embryonic development. The current study was carried out to study the gene expression in Osmanabadi buck (Capra hircus) supplemented with organic minerals. Organic minerals alone or in combination with different concentrations were fed to the treatment groups (T2- Zn 20 mg, T3- Zn 40 mg, T4- Zn 60 mg, T5- Cu 12.5 mg, T6- Cu 25 mg, T7- Cu 37.5 mg, T8- Zn 20 mg + Cu 12.5 mg, T9- Zn 40 mg + Cu 25 mg, T10- Zn 60 mg + Cu 37.5 mg) along with the concentration mixture and roughages; whereas control (T1) group was fed concentrate mixture and roughages. The sperm samples were processed for gene expression studies of Ras Homolog Family Member A (RHOA), Mesoderm Specific Transcript (MEST), Nucleoside diphosphate-linked moiety X motif 6 (NUDT6), Protamine 1 (PRM1), Protamine 2 (PRM2) and Heat shock protein 90 alpha family class A member 1 (HSP90AA) using qRT-PCR and the protein-protein interaction analysis was carried out through String database version 11.0. Supplementation of trace minerals has enhanced the gene expression at a significant level (P<0.05) in the supplemented groups. The expression of MEST, RHOA, and PRM1 was higher in Cu 25-supplemented groups; whereas, NUDT6 in Zn 20, PRM2 and HSP90AA in Zn 40 showed higher expressions. Osmanabadi bucks supplemented with Cu 25 mg have shown promising results in the present and earlier studies so it can be concluded that the field-level application of Cu 25 mg would lead to promising results.

Résumé :
AbstractAn artificial wetland was computationally modelled using STELLA®, a graphical programming tool for an Au-Cu mine site in Central-west NSW, the aim of which was to offer a predictive analysis of a proposed wetland for Cu, Zn and Mn removal using Typha domingensis as the agent. The model considers the important factors that impact phytoremediation of Cu, Zn and Mn. Simulations were performed to optimise the area of the wetland; concentration of Cu, Zn and Mn released from mine (AMD); and flow rates of water for maximum absorption of the metals. A scenario analysis indicates that at AMD = 0.75mg/L for Cu, Zn and Mn, 12.5, 8.6, and 357.9 kg of Cu, Zn and Mn, respectively, will be assimilated by the wetland in 35 years, which would be equivalent to 61 mg of Cu/kg, 70 mg of Zn/kg and 2,886 mg of Mn/kg of T. domingensis, respectively. However, should Cu, Zn and Mn in AMD increase to 3 mg/L, then 18.6 kg of Cu and 11.8 kg of Zn, respectively, will be assimilated in 35 years, whereas no substantial increase in absorption for Mn would occur. This indicates that 91 mg of Cu, 96 mg of Zn and 2917 mg of Mn will be assimilated for every kg of T. domingensis in the wetland. The best option for Cu storage would be to construct a wetland of 50,000 m2area (AMD = 0.367 mg/L of Cu), which would capture 14.1 kg of Cu in 43 years, eventually releasing only 3.9 kg of Cu downstream. Simulations performed for a WA of 30,000 m2indicate that for AMD = 0.367 mg/L of Zn, the wetland captures 6.2 kg, releasing only 3.5 kg downstream after 43 years; the concentration of Zn in the leachate would be 10.2 kg, making this the most efficient wetland amongst the options considered for phytoremediating Zn. This work will help mine managers and environmental researchers in developing an effective environmental management plan by focusing on phytoremediation, with a view at extracting Cu, Zn and Mn from the contaminated sites.

The effects of variations in composition on the decomposition process in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys (i.e. – 7xxx-series aluminum alloy) were studied emphasizing their effect on mechanical properties. Several experimental quaternary alloys were studied to compare their behavior with commercial 7xxx-series alloys. The investigation included studies on the effects of natural aging, artificial aging, quench sensitivity, precipitate free zone formation, and homogenization. Additionally, “true aging” curves (i.e. – hardness/strength vs. conductivity) were presented in order to visualize and quantify the entire precipitation process. It is obvious that fluctuations in the main alloying elements/processing parameters can alter the precipitation process, but the purpose of this work was to quantify those changes using standard industrial techniques. It was found that natural aging was detrimental for strength in the T6 temper for alloys containing more than 1.0 wt.% Cu, and was shown to alter the coarsening kinetics in the over-aged condition (T7). Conversely, for alloys with Cu contents less than 0.5% natural aging was shown to be beneficial for strength. Altering the Zn:Mg ratio was also shown to effect natural aging response of an alloy in addition to introducing additional precipitation processes (T-phase). Therefore, this work is a blueprint for advanced alloy manufacturing that allows for the rapid production of new alloys and tempers by narrowing the research focus depending on an alloy’s composition.

The last years, the jewellery industrial sector is becoming of significance importance in the scenario of national and international economy. Brazil is one of the jewels biggest world producer, being the Rio Grande do Sul the leading among all Brazilian states, with a regional distinction for the city of Guaporé witch has more than a hundred jewel factories, where are produced gold and silver jewels and semijewels plated with gold and silver. In spite of it, there are very few literature related to scientific studies in the jewellery area, particularly nationwide. In this context, this research has as a main aim to investigate the Zn-Al- Cu-Mg alloy that has recently applied in fabrication of jewel-plated in order to obtain information about the properties of interest to fabrication and plated processes. The experimental methodology utilized in this work involved the following steps: analysis of superficial defects in gold and silver plated semi-jewel made with Zn-Al-Cu-Mg commercial alloy and as well as the determination of its microstructure and mechanical characteristics; compositional modification of this alloy by the addiction of extra Copper and Magnesium and study of their effects in the alloy properties; and as a final point the evaluation of gold plating capacity of the commercial alloy and the alloy modified with Copper and Magnesium. This study demonstrated that composition variations modified considerably the microstructure of the alloy and consequently its mechanical properties, as well as this plating capacity. The employed characterization techniques CA-CCA (Computer- Aided Cooling Curve Analysis), DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis), Dilatometry and optical and scanning electron microcopies where of fundamental importance to better understand the influence of chemical composition on the microstructure and properties of the Zn-Al-Cu-Mg alloy. However, it was observed that another factor of great influence in the quality of the superficial plated of this alloy is the procedure and quality of cleaning effectuated in the parts for posterior platting process.

Small additions of scandium to Al-Zn-Mg-Cu 7000 series alloys can significantly improve mechanical properties and augment the strength retention at low and elevated temperatures. This research program evaluates the residual properties of Sc-modified Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy extrusions joined through friction stir welding (FSW). Mechanical and corrosion testing were performed on the baseline material and on panels friction stir welded at 175, 225, 250, 300, 350 and 400 RPM (all other weld parameters held constant). A thermal model of friction stir welding is developed that utilizes an energy-based scaling factor to account for tool slip. The proposed slip factor is derived from an observed, empirical relationship between the ratio of the maximum welding temperature to the solidus temperature and energy per unit length of weld. The thermal model successfully predicts the maximum welding temperatures over a range of energy levels, and the mechanical and corrosion behavior is correlated to the temperature distribution predicted by the model.

Résumé :
Taking into account the fact that by fortifying chocolate, more nutritious and healthier chocolates are obtained, in this work we set out to obtain an assortment of milk chocolate with the addition of chicken eggshell powder and to evaluate its mineral intake. Practically, the purpose of this experiment is the superior valorization of eggshell waste from household activities as a mineral fortification for milk chocolate. Four types of milk chocolates were prepared with the addition of 0, 1, 2 and 4% chicken eggshell powder, which were analyzed from the point of view of Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu. The results obtained from the analysis of chocolates show an increase in the mineral concentration of milk chocolate with the increasing addition of eggshell powder: 265 1.724 mg/100g Ca; 124-140 mg/100g Mg; 2.947 3.231 mg/100g Fe; 0.569 0.612 mg/100g Mn; 2.407 2.460 mg/100g Zn and 0.940 0.988 mg/100g Cu. Under the conditions of the present experiment, a consumption of 50 g of chocolate with 1 - 4% eggshell powder covers a good part of the recommended daily mineral requirement: 31.47 - 86.20% Ca - for women and men; 15.21 - 22.66% Mg for women and men; 8.19 - 20.19% Fe - for men and women; 12.46 - 17.08% Mn - for women and men; 10.97 - 15.38% Zn - for men and women respectively; 52.50 - 54.89% Cu - for women and men. A possible increase in the mass of eggshell used for the mineral fortification of chocolate is possible, but this may decrease the sensory quality of the chocolate, especially in terms of texture and taste. The obtained results confirm the fact that milk chocolate fortified with 4% eggshell has a higher mineral intake than nonfortified chocolate, especially from the point of view of Ca and Mg content.

Résumé :
In this study, the ecosystem marine water-sediment-biota was investigated and the pollution was assessed. The concentrations of eight elements were determined in marine water, sediments and four fish species collected from Black Sea (Varna), Bulgaria during 2013. Marine water recorded the highest concentrations of Zn (15-22 μg/L), As (1.1–1.2 μg/L) and Pb (0.7-0.8 μg/L) while Zn (31-52 μg/g), Pb (21-29 μg/g) and Cu (20-34 μg/g) and show the highest concentrations in sediments. Water and sediments showed similar spatial distribution patterns for the highest mean values of the different metals. In the analysed fish species, the highest concentration of the metals Cu and Zn were found in Trachurus Mediterrneus (0.42 mg/kg w.w) and in Sprattus Sprattus (12.7 mg/kg w.w), respectively while the heavy metals As and Hg were found with maximum values in Pseta Maxima (3.99 mg/kg w.w and 0.08 mg/kg w.w respectively). The results from this study were compared with our data for a previous period (2004-2006) and they show decrease in the levels of heavy metal.

Résumé :
Plants need two types of nutrients, which are macronutrients and micronutrients. Micronutrient needed by plants in small concentration (≤ 100 ppm) i.e. Cu and Zn. This study aims to determine the best composition ratio of Cu:EDTA, Zn:EDTA, and Cu:Zn:EDTA for making the micronutrients, determine the effect of Cu and Zn on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L), and determine the most effective type of micronutrient fertilizer and its concentration for lettuce growth. It was started by dissolving materials with 200 ml distilled water, then stirred and heated at 70-80°C for two hours. After that, the solution was precipitated for two days at room temperature. Methanol was added only before precipitating CuZn-EDTA. The precipitate or micronutrient crystals of Cu-EDTA, Zn-EDTA, and CuZn-EDTA were then filtered and dried in a desiccator for three days. Each of micronutrient crystal was dissolved into 25 ml water then the lettuce will be sprayed with micronutrient solution for two and three sprays once a week. Observations related to the quantity of leaves, plant length, and leaf width were carried out for 25 days and then plant harvested and weighed. The result shows that the best compotition ratio for making micronutrients were Cu:EDTA (1:1.85)w/w; Zn:EDTA (1:3.43)w/w; and Cu:Zn:EDTA (1:1.6:3.85)w/w/w. Concentration of micronutrient solution applied were 5000 and 1000 ppm. Respectively for each concentration, micronutrient CuZn-EDTA affected the leaves quantity growth with the slope of 0.0655 and 0.0642; and yields (g/cm2) with the slope of 0.495 and 0.46. Zn-EDTA had an effect on plant length growth with a slope of 0.1525 and 0.091; and leaf width growth with a slope of 0.0216 and 0.0111. Cu and Zn contained in lettuce leaves then analyzed and was known for Cu-EDTA, Cu and Zn contained (mg/kg) respectively were 37.78 and 50.68; for Zn-EDTA were 32.8 and 61.25; for CuZn-EDTA were 33.23 and 48.16 (mg/kg). The metal content analyzed in lettuce leaves is not suitable for consumption because it exceeds the maximum limit written on the Decree of the Directorate General of POM No 03725/B/SK/VII/89. Application of fertilizer should be more diluted to less than the maximum limit.

Résumé :
This research was performed at Petrovsky waste rock dump, the Central part of the Kryvyi Rih iron-ore & metallurgical district (Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). The macronutrients (K, Ca, Mg, P and S) and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd) contents in the leaves of three species of the trees (Ash-leaved maple, Silver Birch and Black locust) that were collected on devastated lands were assessed. It was established that trees which grow on the Petrovsky dump take place under evident shortage of nutrients (especially K and P) and excess of metals (especially Fe, Mn and Zn). It is revealed that Ash-leaved maple and Black locust are more resistant to the geochemical conditions of devastated lands. In this regard, these species of trees can be recommended for forest restoration & reforestation on devastated lands.

Résumé :
The relevance of these studies was due to the need to clarify the biogeochemical characteristics of woody plant species that grow naturally on devastated lands. The object of this paper: to carry out a comparative analysis of macro nutrients and heavy metals contents in the leaves of trees spontaneously sprouting on the devastated lands at the Kryvyi Rih District. This research was performed at Petrovsky waste rock dump, the Central part of the Kryvyi Rih iron-ore & metallurgical district (Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). The macronutrients (K, Ca, Mg, P and S) and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd) contents in the leaves of three species of the trees (Ash-leaved Maple Acer negundo L., Silver Birch Betula pendula Roth. and Black Locust Robinia pseudoacacia L.) that were collected on devastated lands were assessed. It was established that trees which grow on the Petrovsky dump take place under evident shortage of nutrients (especially K and P) and excess of metals (especially Fe, Mn and Zn). Taking into account the revealed values of macronutrients optimal concentrations and revealed the heavy metals lowest content in the leaves, we assume that Ash-leaved maple and Black locust (compared to the Silver Birch) are more resistant to the geochemical conditions of devastated lands.

Résumé :
The importance of our research is due to the need to introduce into modern biological education methods of predictive modeling which are based on relevant factual material. Such an actual material may be the entry of natural and anthropic heavy metals into the soil at industrial areas. The object of this work: (i) to work out a predictive model of the total heavy metals inputs to soil at the Kryvyi Rih ore-mining & metallurgical District and (ii) to identify ways to use this model in biological education. Our study areas are located in the Kryvyi Rih District (Dnipropetrovsk region, Central Ukraine). In this work, classical scientific methods (such as analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, analogy and formalization, abstraction and concretization, classification and modelling) were used. By summary the own research results and available scientific publications, the heavy metals total inputs to soils at Kryvyi Rih District was predicted. It is suggested that the current heavy metals content in soils of this region due to 1) natural and 2) anthropogenic flows, which are segmented into global and local levels. Predictive calculations show that heavy metals inputs to the soil of this region have the following values (mg ⋅ m2/year): Fe – 800-80 000, Mn – 125-520, Zn – 75-360, Ni – 20-30, Cu – 15-50, Pb – 7.5-120, Cd – 0.30-0.70. It is established that anthropogenic flows predominate in Fe and Pb inputs (60-99 %), natural flows predominate in Ni and Cd inputs (55-95 %). While, for Mn, Zn, and Cu inputs the alternate dominance of natural and anthropogenic flows are characterized. It is shown that the predictive model development for heavy metals inputs to soils of the industrial region can be used for efficient biological education (for example in bachelors of biologists training, discipline "Computer modelling in biology").

It is suggested that the current heavy metals content in soils of this region due to 1) natural and 2) anthropogenic flows, which are segmented into global and local levels. Predictive calculations show that heavy metals inputs to the soil of this region have the following values ( mg ∙ m ଶ year ⁄ ): Fe – 800-80 000, Mn – 125-520, Zn – 75-360, Ni – 20-30, Cu – 15-50, Pb – 7.5-120, Cd – 0.30-0.70. It is shown that the predictive model development for heavy metals inputs to soils of the industrial region can be used for efficient biological education (for example in bachelors of biologists training, discipline “Computer modelling in biology”).

Résumé :
This open file reports geochemical data for stream and groundwater samples collected around the Casino porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposit, one of the largest and highest-grade deposits of its kind in Canada. The calc-alkaline porphyry is hosted in a Late Cretaceous quartz monzonite and associated breccias in the unglaciated region of west central Yukon. Water chemistry around the deposit was investigated because: (i) the deposit has not yet been disturbed by mining; (ii) the deposit was known to have metal-rich waters in local streams; and (iii) the deposit has atypically preserved ore zones. Stream water samples were collected at 22 sites and groundwater samples were collected from eight sites. Surface and groundwaters around the Casino deposit are anomalous with respect to Cd (up to 5.4 µg/L), Co (up to 64 µg/L), Cu (up to 1657 µg/L), Mo (up to 25 µg/L), As (up to 17 µg/L), Re (up to 0.7 µg/L), and Zn (up to 354 µg/L) concentrations. The stable isotopes of O and H of the groundwaters are essentially identical to the surface waters and plot close to the local and global meteoric water lines, indicating that the waters represent modern recharge, consistent with the generally low salinities of all the waters (total dissolved solids range from 98 to 1320 mg/L). Sulfur and Sr isotopes are consistent with proximal waters interacting with the Casino rocks and mineralization; a sulfide-rich bedrock sample from the deposit has delta-34S = -1.2 permille and proximal groundwaters are only slightly heavier (-0.3 to 3.1 permille). These geochemical and isotopic results indicate that surface water geochemistry is a suitable medium for mineral exploration for porphyry-style mineralization in the Yukon, and similar unglaciated regions in Canada. The atypical geochemical signature (Mo, Se, Re, As, Cu) of these types of deposits are typically reflected in the water chemistry and S isotopes provide a more local vectoring tool.
