Résumé :
The concept of attention held a special place during the historical development of psychology (Cohen, Sparkling –Cohen & O' Donell, 1993). Although hundreds of articles dealing with the concept of attention are published each year (Whyte, 1992a), due to the lack of coherence at a conceptual, methodological and theoretical level, there continues to be disagreement among scientists (Anderson, Craik & Naveh-Benjamin, 1998. Van Zomeran & Brower, 1994) on the nature of attention. Aim: The main purpose of the article is the definition of attention. Method: a review of the literature was made and the most representative articles on the concept of attention were selected. Conclusions: Attention is a multifaceted concept. Its special nature leads to the non-existence of a unified psychological theory that will explain and include all its dimensions.

Résumé :
Background: Comb homolog enhancer 1 (EPC1) gene is one of the important members of epigenetic inhibitor PCG family. It shows carcinogenic potential in a variety of malignant tumors, but the expression and role of EPC1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma are unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the expression and function of enhancer of polycomb homolog 1 (EPC1) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: The differential expression of EPC1 in the cancer tissues and cell lines of NPC was examined by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). EPC1 expression, cell proliferation, and apoptosis were detected in NPC cell lines after EPC1 silencing, and the levels of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins E-cadherin and vimentin were detected in NPC cells after EPC1 silencing. The study was performed at Fujian Provincial Hospital, Fujian, China, from 2018 to 2019. Results: We found that EPC1 was significantly upregulated in the cancer tissues and cell lines of NPC (P<0.001). Furthermore, knockdown of EPC1 inhibited the growth and metastasis of NPC cells. E-cadherin and vimentin were detected in NPC cells after EPC1 was knocked out. It was confirmed that inhibition of EPC1 resulted in increased E-cadherin expression (P<0.001) and decreased vimentin expression (P<0.001), suggesting that inhibition of EPC1 could inhibit the EMT in NPC cells. Conclusion: EPC1 expression was upregulated in NPC tissues and cell lines. Knockout of EPC1 effectively inhibited the growth of NPC cells, induced apoptosis, and inhibited invasion and metastasis. Inhibition of EPC1 could inhibit the EMT in NPC cells. All of the above findings support the viewpoint that EPC1 plays a pro-cancer role in NPC.

Résumé :
In this thesis, I explore answers to three central questions: (i) what are beliefs, (ii) why do we have them, and (iii) how should we interpret doxastic correctness, the principle that it is correct to believe that p if and only if p? The first question has a long history in philosophy of mind, and in various forms can be dated at least as far back as David Hume. For that reason, I refer to the problem as Hume’s Problem. As I interpret the question, the main difficulty with accounting for what beliefs are, is in distinguishing them from forms of acceptance, where acceptances are understood as regarding-as-true attitudes—these include assuming, supposing, guessing, and (propositional) imagining. I take this technical use of ‘acceptance’ from Velleman (2000). The second question I interpret as a biological question about why we, as organisms with beliefs, have beliefs. Answering this question depends on how we answer the first question, in the sense that, in explaining why we have beliefs, we are explaining why we have an attitude that meets the conditions that we set for beliefs to meet. And the third question is largely about the important relation between belief and truth; why is it that, as believers, we emphasise the apparent platitude that a belief is correct if and only if it is true? To address these questions, I consider three different theoretical approaches to understanding beliefs. Specifically, I discuss teleological theories, normative theories, and a functional theory. For various reasons, I argue that teleological accounts fail to provide satisfactory answers to the three central questions (Part I); that normative accounts also fail to answer our central questions (Part II); but that a functional account, appropriately understood, can provide answers to these questions (Part III). In particular, I argue for what I call the doxastic effects thesis, which defines belief according to the effects beliefs have (or their outputs); and I propose that we interpret the components of this thesis as functional statements. The doxastic effects thesis allows us to answer Hume’s Problem, by proposing necessary and sufficient conditions for beliefs to meet; and interpreting these conditions as functions allows us to explain, at least in part, why we have beliefs. Concerning doxastic correctness, I argue that our commitment to the principle has arisen as a social construct, and therefore should be given (what I call) a thin reading; as opposed to the substantive reading that we get on the teleological and normative accounts, such that doxastic correctness states an essential fact about belief. Finally, in Part IV, I extend the first question, what beliefs are, to a third doxastic attitude. Namely, suspended belief (suspension). I argue that one further advantage of my functional theory of belief is that it can account for suspension as a doxastic attitude, unlike the teleological and normative alternatives.

Wilson, Meghan Loving. « Improving the functional fitness of older adults through Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together (LIFT) : Use of an integrated research-practice partnership approach in community and clinical settings ». Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82869.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Older adults represent one of the fastest growing populations as well as one of the most inactive. The effects of inactivity (e.g., fall risk, reduced quality of life, inability to age in place) may be mitigated through health promotion programs that include strength-training components. In addition to targeted exercises, it is recommended that programs for older adults incorporate principles of group dynamics (e.g., group goal setting, group distinctiveness) as these types of interventions have previously increased adherence and compliance of physical activity beyond the life of the program and are more effective than individually delivered interventions (e.g., at home DVD, one-on-one). However, these programs are not readily adopted and sustained in practice, which could reflect a lack of programmatic fit within the intended delivery setting. Forming a partnership with key stakeholders within the intended practice setting (e.g., communities and clinics) to identify or develop an evidence-based program that satisfies the mission, values, and resources of the deliver setting, may influence program uptake and sustainability. It is essential to assess setting- and staff-level perceptions of program fit prior to successful implementation. Once interventions are embedded within the standards of care or practice, the intervention has the potential to reach a greater number of older adults and improve their functional fitness outcomes. These intervention attributes are outlined in the prominent RE-AIM Framework: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance. Taken together, practice- and research- adaptations may increase the adoption of an intervention, and it is necessary to also measure the degree to which an adapted program impacts Reach, Effect, Implementation, and Maintenance. Practice- and evidence-based adaptations are often necessary and inevitable to improve intervention fit within an intended delivery setting. The overall objective of this dissertation was to use an integrated research-practice partnership approach to select, adapt, and evaluate effects of a multi-faceted strength-training program for older adults in community and clinical settings. The aim of Manuscript 1 was to describe the process by which an evidence-based intervention was adapted to meet the needs of a community entity as well as the initial Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance dimensions of the RE-AIM framework. Manuscript 2 aims to evaluate the initial Reach of older adults and Effect on functional fitness of the adapted program, LIFT, to generate evidence in support of the adapted intervention through an integrated research-practice partnership with a community entity. Manuscript 3 outlines the development, processes, and temporal outcomes of an integrated research-practice partnership approach aimed at linking stakeholders across the academic-clinical-community continuum to assess feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness outcomes associated with Implementation of a LIFT referral scheme. Based on the research presented in this dissertation, it is concluded that an integrated research-practice partnership, although time intensive, may be an effective approach to report real-world adaptations based on the needs of the delivery setting without compromising effects of an evidence-based strength-training intervention for older adults.

The use of design automation tools has allowed complex projects to reach feasible time-to-market and cost parameters. In this context, logic synthesis is a critical procedure in the design flow. The technology independent step (part of the logic synthesis which is performed regardless any physical property) is traditionally performed over equations. The development of new multi-level optimization algorithms has recently shifted towards the use of And-Inverter-Graphs (AIGs). The number of nodes and the graphs depth in AIGs present better correlation with resulting circuit area and delay than any characteristic of other representations. In this work, a technology independent synthesis algorithm that works on top of an AIG data structure is proposed. A novel approach for AIG construction, based on a new synthesis paradigm called functional composition, is introduced. This approach consists in building the final AIG by associating simpler AIGs, in a bottom-up approach. The method controls, during the graphs construction, the characteristics of final and intermediate graphs by applying a cost function as a way to evaluate the quality of those AIGs. The goal is to minimize the number of nodes and the depth of the final AIG. This multi-objective synthesis algorithm has presented interesting features and advantages when compared to traditional approaches. Moreover, this work presents a method for AIGs construction for multiple output functions, which enhances structural sharing, improving the resulting circuit. Results have shown an improvement of around 5% in number of nodes when compared to ABC tool.

Résumé :
This research aims to describe investigate possibilities of learning situations in mathematics concepts related to polynomial functions of the 1st degree ( In order Function ) with students from 1st grade of Technical Education Middle Level Integrated IFS - Campus São Cristóvão making use of a teaching sequence mediated by the use of a dynamic geometry software, Geogebra. To this purpose, a study, based on the ideas of Machado (2008 ), Pais (2011 ) and Oliveira (2013 ), based on the Engineering Curriculum discussed by Artigue (1996 ) with two classes from 1st Series Technical Course Intermediate Level Integrated was conducted Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Sergipe - Campus São Cristóvão / SE, which formed study groups that we call group with the experiment and group without the experiment. At the end of the experiment it was found that the group with the experiment had better results than the group without the experiment. The data indicated that using a dynamic geometry software in a dynamic geometry environment provides a great interaction between the participants constituting a positive factor to learning, since they facilitate the construction of new concepts, provide a comparison between different forms of representation of a function, thereby enabling conditions for the participant to recognize the graphical representation of an polynomial function of the first degree as a straight, expressing the relation between the coefficients of the straight equation with its graphical and algebraic representations.

In this work, it is presented a study on linear and quadratic functions and problem-solving through the use of programming, focusing on the students of the last year of elementary school and the first year of high school. Nowadays we notice apathy and demotivation from the students in the basic education due to their belief that what they learn in the school is unnecessary and, mainly, when facing the usual difficulties concerning Mathematics. Based on this premise, this work aims to point out a direct link between problem-solving and programming, interactively and attractively approaching a way to acquire the necessary skills in these two areas. Using the Scratch software to solve the proposed activities on linear and quadratic functions, we were able to captivate students' interest and achieve greater participation in the classroom through differentiated and creative activities. It also includes the benefits of learning how to program, which is considered an essential skill for the future.

Résumé :
AbstractChildren with attention and executive function disabilities often have a long-lasting need for rehabilitation to support their functional ability. Yet the availability of rehabilitation services is insufficient, regionally unevenly distributed, and unequal in terms of access to rehabilitation. There is a need for easily accessible services. In this paper, we present the VREALFUN project where the major aim is to develop a novel Virtual Reality (VR) rehabilitation method for children with deficits in attention and executive functions. This ongoing Randomized Control Study (RCT) includes two arms, one in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the other in children with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Résumé :
AbstractStatic analyses are mostly designed to show the absence of bugs: if the analysis reports no alarms then the program won’t exhibit any unwanted behaviours. To this aim they manipulate over-approximations of program semantics and, inevitably, they often report some false alarms. Recently, O’Hearn proposed Incorrectness Logic, that is based on under-approximations, as a formal method to find bugs that only reports true alarms. In this paper we aim to answer one important question raised by O’Hearn, namely which role can Abstract Interpretation play for the development of under-approximate tools for bug catching. In principle, Abstract Interpretation based static analyses can be defined for computing over-approximations as well as under-approximations, but in practice, most techniques exploited the former while few attempts developed the latter. To show why it is difficult to design effective under-approximation abstract domains, we first propose the new definitions of non emptying functions and highly surjective function family and then we formally prove the limits of under-approximation analysis by showing the non existence of abstract domains able to approximate such functions in a non trivial way. Our results outline the limits of under-approximation Abstract Interpretation and clarify, for the first time, why over- and under- approximation analyzers exhibited such a different development.

The aim of this paper is to compare the superlexical prefixes of Russian and Bulgarian. The main focus is on delimitative and attenuative po- in derived PF forms as well as in secondary IPF verbs. Using the Russian-Bulgarian parallel corpus, I show that there is a functional parallelism between PF and IPF delimitatives in Russian and Bulgarian. The semantic similarity between delimitative and attenuative meaning is the basis for expressing special pragmatic functions by means of both PF and IPF poattenuatives in Bulgarian, while attenuative po-verbs in Russian express specific pragmatic meanings primarily via PF forms.

Résumé :
The paper aims to be a useful analytical and managerial support tool for the debt practitioners and for the academia. It provides an appropriate approach for developing countries, and offers a detailed and systematic blueprint in how to establishing an efficient Debt Management Office. This paper differentiates from other papers published on the subject at least in two aspects. The first one is the political relevance that is given to the decision making process as far as responsibility for fixing a global macroeconomic public debt management strategy is concerned. The second is that the approach is a functional analysis, that is, there is no need to have a specific structure for the debt office in order to analyse who and where the functions are carried out. The paper gives a clear and well-defined list of tasks for each one of the functions, and this leads to clear and structured functional responsibilities for the implementation of the back, middle and front office working organization structure. This paper is composed of five sections. The first one is an introduction to the concept of Effective Debt Management Functions. The second and the third are the description of the functions: the second for the Executive Functions, which are not necessarily a Debt Management Office (DMO) responsibility, and the third to the Operational Functions, which are the direct DMO responsibilities. The fourth section is devoted to the responsibilities that a DMO can be accountable for, that may vary from country to country. The last section addresses major issues on debt management, stressing the pragmatic analysis that the functional approach provides. There are two Annexes with open-ended lists of tasks for each one of the Effective Debt Management Functions.

Résumé :
This paper describes a procedure designed for incorporating improved information on taxes into existing GTAP data aggregations. The aim of this procedure is to maintain the internal consistency of the data base while minimizing the impacts of the tax change on the value flows in the data base. It utilizes a variant of the GTAP model, for which the model structure and parameter settings have been designed to achieve this aim. The features include Cobb-Douglas production and consumption functions, inter-intermediate input substitution (also Cobb-Douglas), universal factor mobility and fixed trade balances. Instructions and computer files for implementation of the procedure are provided in the attached files.

Résumé :
Previous work identified cases where relatively minor changes in air manifold pressure led to engine detonation. This occurred under lean combustion conditions where detonation is believed to be unlikely. This indicates that it is as equally important to have stable engine control functions as it is to have the proper air/fuel setpoint. The objective of this work is to identify alternatives to conventional control techniques that can be employed on reciprocating engines used in the natural gas transpiration industry to enhance air/fuel control stability which in turn should improve combustion stability. The report identifies an alternate control method that adds symmetric/asymmetric dynamic integral control to the standard PID control method. While the example here is applied to reciprocating engine air/fuel control specifically, the control method can apply to many other complicated control methods such as surge control, flow control, temperature control, and pressure control. The report includes an example implementation for Allen-Bradley controlers using IEC 61131-3 Function Blocks.

Résumé :
Review question / Objective: Participants: experiment POI animal models; Interventions: human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells; Comparisons: POI animal models without hUCMSC therapy; Outcomes: estrous cycle situation, serum sex hormone level and ovarian follicle count; Studies: randomized controlled animal study; The aim of the review is to figure out whether hUCMSC can recover ovarian function in POI animal models. Condition being studied: Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a syndrome characterized by reduced or absent ovarian function (hypogonadism) and elevated levels of gonadotropins, specifically luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Etiologies of POI are various. Genetic disorders, autoimmune diseases, iatrogenic injuries like chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and infectious diseases all contribute to the development of POI. Main manifestation of POI includes decreased ovarian function and infertility. Patients may suffer from menopausal symptoms, such as increased cardiovascular disease, decreased bone mineral density, vulvovaginal atrophy, psychological distress and so on. Current treatment of POI is limited. HRT mainly ameliorates symptoms while ART can achieve fertility in some patients but faces many challenges in clinical practice because it's hard to get satisfied oocytes. Stem cell therapy is proved to be efficient in recovering organ functions and hUCMSC is one of the easiest cell to obtain. So we think hUCMSC is promising in treating POI.

Résumé :
This report summarizes a survey performed in eight countries on the status quo of daylight and electric lighting control systems. Feedback from more than 100 international experts (building / facility managers and planers) was evaluated. The aim of the survey was to identify the perception of the different possibilities of the current lighting control solutions and the expectations about the control systems. The survey aims to provide a mapping of the current lighting control systems available at the market and an overview of which functions are perceived as most important and which areas are found to be improved. Participants of the survey had to rank each question in relation to the perceived importance and the need for improvement. The survey enclosed five general topics; energy, operational aspects, occupant control, occupant comfort and control functionality.
