AbstractLabor Market, Labor Force, and Nasa Indigenous Rural Economy in Three Municipalities in the Northern Cauca: Toribío, Jambaló y CaldonoThis paper analyzes conventional labor market indicators (global participation rate, employment rate, inactivity rate and unemployment rate) and the insertion of the indigenous labor force in the local and regional labor market for three municipalities with a predominant Nasa population in the north of the Cauca: Toribío, Jambaló and Caldono. Similarly, we analyze characteristics of the Nasa rural economy in terms of the crops and their destination (sale/self-consumption) and the labor force use in the sowing and harvesting tasks, among other features. The findings show that labor market indicators fail to capture labor reality in this rural economy.

Thesis (MTech (Public Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the labour relations of the workers in the agricultural sector, with reference to the De Doors area in the Western Cape. Despite the political, social and economic changes to better the lives of the farm workers that have been implemented to rectify the inequalities of the past, the labour conditions on farms stayed unchanged. It is evident that there is a gap in the labour relations in the agricultural sector, due to the 2012/13 strike actions that took place. Qualitative research methodology was employed in the study; it provided the researcher with the opportunity to personally interact with the farm workers. It further allowed the researcher to gain a holistic understanding of the daily lives of the farm workers which would foster a better understanding of their daily struggles. Interviews were used as method of data collection. This methodology also enables the researcher to interpret and describe the actions of participants. Good labour relations play a vital role in any industry or organisation. Farm workers are generally classified as vulnerable and the most exploited group of the South African society. They often work irregular hours throughout the year in various weather settings. Regardless of the physical strain that their jobs entail, farm workers earn a low wage and are often deprived of the basic benefits that an employee should be entitled to. This was the reason the farm workers embarked on a strike in 2012/13. The researcher proposed recommendations to the Agricultural department on how to improve the labour relations on the farms in the De Doorns area by suggesting that more labour inspectors are being employed to oversee that legislation are implemented. Skills Development needs to be become compulsory for all farm workers as farming is becoming more technological. Skills Development unlocks talents and creative energy for the farm workers which have a positive impact on production.

Résumé :
During the Middle Ages agriculture and agricultural labor was involved in a new system of values, due to the expansion of Christianity, and this valorization had a great impact on society and economic development of Western Europe. Agriculture was considered part of the artes mechanicae and peasants (laboratores) were recognized as one of the three orders of the social representation. However, in the 13th-15th centuries, there were some significant changes such as the shift from serfdom to contracted work, investments in agriculture by citizens, and the development of new connection between cities and the countryside. Historical treatises on agriculture and other public sources provide evidence of these news ideas, that viewed agriculture as the “most useful and necessary” craft.

Résumé :
AbstractThe modern Russian agrifood industry is a steadily developing sector of the national economy. The production of a number of goods has reached historically high levels. Russia has a strong position in the export of agricultural raw material commodities, while the country remains dependent on imports from other countries. This chapter examines critical areas of scientific research in Russia that will create opportunities for increasing competitiveness in the transition of the world food systems from conventional agriculture to Agriculture 4.0. Science and technology-based innovations for transforming food systems in Russia include productivity growth through breeding technologies and improved genetics, in combination with technologies that will ensure optimal realization of this potential (feed additives, fertilizers, plant protection products, animal health, and other so-called “package” solutions). The introduction of digital technologies and cross-platform solutions in agriculture, to reduce the gaps in labor productivity, will increase overall productivity and reduce food losses. Diversification of food products includes priorities for high-margin segments of healthy, functional and personalized nutrition, and the deep processing of agricultural commodities. The paper explores closed farming systems (including “urban farming”) that are independent of external climatic and biological factors. Development of the agricultural waste recycling sector is a priority too. Russia lags behind its competitors in terms of the scientific quality of its production. This is due to a lack of efficiency in the financing of agricultural science, as well as an imbalance within its structure. An increasingly acute problem of the transition of Russian food systems to the innovative path is the reduction of human resources. This trend is typical both in the scientific sector, where it is expressed in a decrease in the number of researchers and an aging staff (which threatens the continuity in the established scientific schools and the viability of research teams) and in agriculture as a whole.

More than two third of total population of Kyrgyzstan are living in rural areas, and the agricultural sector of Kyrgyzstan employs nearly the half of labor force and have export oriented output production with over than 384 thousand peasant farms. The share of employed women in agriculture compromised the 44 % of total agricultural labor force. However the low economic efficiency and competitiveness of farmers in regional market, market imperfections in agriculture impedes the economic growth of this sector. This research aims to investigate gender gap in agricultural productivity among farm entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan. The agricultural labor productivity gap decomposed by various types of market imperfections, and empirically estimated by “Life in Kyrgyzstan” survey data for 2013 year.

Résumé :
If the economic performance of the Eurasian countries are to be evaluated, the significant positive impact of the rich natural resources used in energy pruduction deserve the central attention. However, agriculture sector still has a great influence on economy. According to the statistics; Azerbaijan’s agricultural exports have jumped by almost US$500 million in the last ten years, now totaling to almost half its Gross Domestic Product. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan contribution to GDP is roughly 27% by agriculture sector. For the rest, similar characteristics can be seen as well. Agriculture sector has a crucial role not only for production but also for the potential labor force that can be transposed to other sectors. For this reason, the policies that are implemented for the rural development contribute to the whole country. Since, increasing the social welfare and promoting the competent labor force for other sectors will lead to a country which is self sufficient and sustainable. The aim of this study is to analyze agriculture sector of Eurasian countries to find out the sector’s contribution to economic development. As a result, tourism and textile sectors to be qualified as focal sectors in the coming years in Eurasian countries and capable to provide essential value added to development are directly related to agriculture. Enhancement of agricultural productivity, development and diversification of market oriented production will be achieved through supporting rural areas. In addition to agricultural support, facilitating access to information sources can be provided by enhancement of dissemination activities.

Résumé :
The paper presents the relationships of organic farming with sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas. The promotion of environmentally friendly agriculture and environmental protection are implemented within agri-environmental programs. The aim of these programs is to achieve sustainable rural development and preserve biodiversity. The goal of studies was to assess the sustainability of ecological agriculture at the level of an agricultural holding. Organic farming is perceived as a system that is most favorable from the perspective of environmental protection. Analysis was conducted on the basis of data from ecological farms in the Podlaskie voivodeship registered in the FADN system in 2014. Ecological indicators (share of cereals in crops, vegetation coverage of the soil throughout the year, stocking density, balance of organic substances, agricultural and environmental actions taken) as well as economic indicators: land profitability and productivity and profitability of labor, were accounted for. It was determined that the conditions of environmental sustainability were met with regard to the majority of ecological indicators. From the perspective of economic effects, organic farming achieved a positive financial result, but it was lower than in conventional farms. This result was achieved thanks to public subsidies for ecological production.

Résumé :
Agriculture has been considered one of the most hazardous industries in the U.S., with studies showing that the worker fatality rate in agriculture is over seven times higher in 2011 than the fatality rate for all private industry workers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), many of the fatalities and injuries that occur each year are preventable based on the use of protective equipment. Hazards associated with agricultural equipment such as farm tractors have been known for a number of years, and safety features have been introduced to mitigate, or in some cases, eliminate hazards associated with operation of this type of equipment. This paper presents a historical analysis of fatal and nonfatal injury data to identify potential effects of these safety features once introduced. The risks agricultural workers face, with an emphasis on hazards presented by farm equipment, is identified and quantified from data in recent years, specifically for farm tractors. For context, an introduction to the regulations and industry standards relevant to agricultural equipment is given, including the introduction of certain safety features such as roll-over protective structures (ROPS), which have been an industry standard requirement on tractors manufactured since the mid-1980s. Overall, recent data show continual reductions in the number of fatal injuries in the agricultural industry, particularly for farm tractors. However, further research is needed to clearly correlate the specific effects of safety mitigation devices on injuries associated with equipment in this industry.

Résumé :
In recent years, the interests of introducing autonomous robots by growers into agriculture fields are rejuvenated due to the ever-increasing labor cost and the recent declining numbers of seasonal agricultural workers. Among all the enabling technologies used in robot operations for agricultural products with shallow structures, controlling a robot to traverse throughout a field is challenging. In this study the motion control of a robot, custom-designed for strawberry fields, is separated into multiple phases to deal with the over-bed and cross-bed operation needs. Different sensors are used for different control phases. In particular, nonlinear robust controllers are designed for the cross-bed motion, purely relying on vision feedback. The proposed sensing and control methods are successfully validated in a commercial farm.

Résumé :
Over the last century, agriculture has evolved from a labor-intensive industry to one that uses mechanized, high-powered production systems. The introduction of robotic technology in agriculture could be a new step towards labor productivity. By mimicking or extending human skills, robots overcome critical human limitations, including the ability to operate in harsh agricultural environments. In this context, in 2014 the development of the first agricultural robot in Mexico (“Voltan”) began at Chapingo Autonomous University. The research’s objective was to develop an autonomous multitasking vehicle for agricultural work. As a result of this development, a novel suspension system was created. In addition, autonomous navigation between crop rows was achieved through computer vision, allowing crop monitoring, fertilizer application and, in general, pest and disease control.

Résumé :
In this paper, we assess the economy-wide impact of Climate Change (CC) on agriculture and food security in 20 Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) countries. Specifically, we focus on the following three channels through which CC may affect agricultural and non-agricultural production: (i) agricultural yields; (ii) labor productivity in agriculture, and; (iii) economy-wide labor productivity. We implement the analysis using the Integrated Economic-Environmental Model (IEEM) and databases for 20 LAC available through the OPEN IEEM Platform. Our analysis identifies those countries most affected according to key indicators including Gross Domestic Product (GDP), international commerce, sectoral output, poverty, and emissions. Most countries experience negative impacts on GDP, with the exception of the major soybean producing countries, namely, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. We find that CC-induced crop productivity and labor productivity changes affect countries differently. The combined impact, however, indicates that Belize, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Paraguay would fare the worst. Early identification of these hardest hit countries can enable policy makers pre-empting these effects and beginning the design of adaptation strategies early on. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, only Argentina, Chile and Uruguay would experience small increases in emissions.

Résumé :
Small family farms account for 72 percent of the farms in the world. Most of these farms, in developing countries, face labor productivity gaps. One of the strategies to increase agricultural productivity focuses on implementing technical assistance programs. Using agriculture microdata, we estimate the marginal treatment effect of receiving technical assistance services. We find that technical assistance generates heterogeneous effects. On average, agricultural units receiving technical assistance increased their agricultural production by 50.4 percent. However, there is important heterogeneity of technical assistance’s effects across the production units’ unobserved and observed characteristics.

Résumé :
Autonomous agricultural vehicles are entering the marketplace, performing jobs that current equipment cannot do or are too dangerous for humans to perform. They offer the prospect of greater farm productivity, and they will help to feed the world’s growing population. This report looks at several topics that impact the commercial success of autonomous agricultural vehicles. The economic benefit that an autonomous system brings to a farm will be discussed alongside machine utilization rates, job quality, and labor savings. The need for standards and regulations to help promote the development of safe systems—as well as to define the language around autonomous agriculture—is also considered. Additionally, this report will highlight the importance of reliability in agricultural machinery and how successful commercialization of autonomy will depend on the ability to do the job correctly and consistently. A critical part of commercial success is how the autonomous agricultural vehicle fits into existing farm processes to provide a complete solution for the farmer. It is hoped that this report will help developers interested in commercializing autonomous agricultural vehicles consider more than just the technical problems to solve and make choices beneficial to market adoption.
