Texte intégralThis sociology thesis is devoted to the retirement of farmers. Beyond their diversity, self-employed agricultural workers share two characteristics. On the one hand, an employment status that frees them from a bond of legal subordination to an employer, and on the other, a strong attachment to the value of work. This greater autonomy and identification with work may suggest that retirement is both a matter of individual responsibility - they create their own risks, and it's up to them to protect themselves against them - and a subsidiary concern. But such an assumption does not stand up for long to the sense of injustice felt by farmers, whose average pension is the lowest of all - especially for women farmers - despite the fact that farming careers are among the most arduous and longest. Based on the sociology of the State and social policies, the sociology of work, the sociology of agricultural worlds and the sociology of social stratification, this thesis examines, through the case of self-employed agricultural workers, more than half of whom are now aged 50 or over, the conditions of possibility and felicity of a model in which it is up to the worker to protect himself against the effects of work and ageing, and in which retirement, in the dual sense of a right to a salary and a right to relaxation, loses its fundamentality. To do this, I first draw on the results of a field survey conducted in a predominantly rural region of northeastern France. Around thirty interviews were conducted with men and women farmers who set up in business at the end of the twentieth century, and who are now retired or preparing to "leave". They were combined with an ethnography of the counter at the regional Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA) fund, where over a period of four months and at different sites, I observed meetings between farmers who had come to find out about their pension entitlements and/or set up their retirement file, and the staff responsible for providing information and assisting them with the necessary procedures. In addition to interviews and observations, two other materials were collected. The first was documentary material, consisting of historical archives and institutional documents on the agricultural old-age pension scheme. Secondly, data from secondary processing of public statistics surveys on work, employment and assets. Based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods operating at different scales of time and space, the thesis is organized into three main sections. Firstly, I propose to identify the long-term effects of non-professional farming on health and aspirations to leave. From both a socio-historical and ethnographic approach to the old-age pension scheme for self employed farmers, I propose to identify the long-term effects of this status on health and retirement aspirations. Using both a sociohistorical and ethnographic approach to the old-age pension scheme for self-employed farmers, I then attempt to characterize the institutional "offer" in terms of pension rights and the administration of social protection for agricultural old age. Finally, I analyze the strategies of social self-protection that farmers use to compensate for the shortcomings of their pension system, and to cope with the constraints on their departure
