Résumé :
The method of synthesis of bimetallic Pd–Ag pentagonally structured catalyst “nanostar” on the surface of Pd-23%Ag alloy films has been developed. The resulting catalyst was studied as a highly active functional layer for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media and the intensification of hydrogen transport through the Pd-23%Ag membrane in the processes of hydrogen diffusion purification. A modifying layer with a controlled size, composition and excellent electrocatalytic activity was synthesized by electrochemical deposition at a reduced current density compared to classical methods. The low deposition rate affects the formation of pentagonally structured nanocrystallites, allowing Pd and Ag particles to form well-defined structures due to the properties of the surfactant used. Electrochemical studies have demonstrated that the catalyst synthesized by the “nanostar” method shows better electrocatalytic activity in relation to MOR and demonstrates a higher peak current (up to 17.82 µA cm−2) in comparison with one for the catalyst synthesized by the “nanoparticle” method (up to 10.66 µA cm−2) in a cyclic voltammetric study. The nanostar catalyst electrode releases the highest current density (0.25 µA cm−2) for MOR and demonstrates higher catalytic activity for the oxidation of possible intermediates such as sodium formate in MOR. In the processes of diffusion membrane purification of hydrogen, a multiple increase in the density of the penetrating flux of hydrogen through the membranes modified by the “nanostar” catalyst (up to 10.6 mmol s−1 m−2) was demonstrated in comparison with the membranes modified by the “nanoparticles” method (up to 4.49 mmol s−1 m−2). Research data may indicate that the properties of the developed pentagonally structured catalyst “nanostar” and its enhanced activity with respect to reactions involving hydrogen increase the desorption activity of the membrane, which ultimately accelerates the overall stepwise transfer of hydrogen across the membrane.

Résumé :
The detection performances of noble metal-based surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) devices are determined by the compositions and geometries of the metal nanostructures, as well as the substrates. In the current study, long spiky Au-Ag alloy nanostars were synthesized, and both core diameters and spike lengths were controlled by Lauryl sulfobetaine concentrations (as the nanostructure growth skeleton). The long spiky star geometries were confirmed by transmission electron micrograph images. Elements energy dispersive spectrometer mapping confirmed that Au and Ag elements were inhomogeneously distributed in the nanostructures and demonstrated a higher Ag content at surface for potential better SERS performance. Selected synthesized spiky nanostars were uniformly assembled on multi-mode silica fiber for probe fabrication by silanization. The SERS performance were characterized using crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as analyte molecules. The lowest detection limit could reach as low as 10−8 M, with a 6.23 × 106 enhancement factor, and the relationship between analyte concentrations and Raman intensities was linear for both CV and R6G, which indicated the potential qualitative and quantitative molecule detection applications. Moreover, the fiber probes also showed good reproducibility and stability in the ambient atmosphere.

Résumé :
Methods have been developed to modify the surface of Pd-23%Ag alloy films in order to increase the rate of hydrogen transfer with appearance of palladium coatings of the “nanostar” and “nanopore” types. The gas transport parameters of the membranes which surface is activated using the developed methods were investigated. The modification of surface of Pd-Ag films synthesized by star-like palladium nanocrystallites allows achieving a hydrogen flux density of up to 0.75 mmol / (s × m2) - that is 1.7 times more than in case of modification modified by “nanopore” type coating of sufficiently thin palladium membranes (< 10 µm) under low temperature (<100 °C) and pressure (<0.6 MPa).

Résumé :
High sensitivity and a wide detection range are always the pursuit of sensor design. In this work, gold nanostars (Au NSs) featuring the shape of sea urchins with an absorption peak at the near infrared region (822 nm) were prepared. We proposed a Au NSs-based plasmonic colorimetric sensing platform for ultrasensitive catechol (CC) detection with a wide detection range from 3.33 nM to 107 μM and a limit of detection (LOD) at 1 nM. The target analyte, CC, was used to reduce silver ions (Ag+) to form silver (Ag) coating on the surface of Au NSs, which caused a blue-shift in the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au NSs. With the gradual increase in CC concentration, the Ag coating on the surface was gradually nucleated, and the LSPR blue-shift carried on. This strategy yields a wide LSPR shift by as much as 276 nm for plasmonic effects, enabling an ultra-wide range and the ultrasensitive detection of CC. This work will facilitate the research of target-mediated LSPR sensors and their wide application in environmental monitoring, food safety, and disease diagnosis.

Résumé :
Plasmon-induced photocatalysis on noble metal surfaces has attracted broad attention due to its application in sunlight energy conversion, while the selectivity of plasmonic platforms remains unclear. Herein, we present the controlled plasmon-mediated oxidation of para-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) by employing Au@Ag core–shell nanostars with tunable tip plasmons in visible–near-infrared range as reactors. In-situ Raman measurements indicate that Au@Ag core–shell nanostars essentially promote the conversion of p-ATP to 4,4′-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) due to hot carriers excited by localized surface plasmon resonance. Au@Ag nanostars with plasmon modes under resonant light excitation suggested higher catalytic efficiency, as evidenced by the larger intensity ratios between 1440 cm−1 (N=N stretching of DMAB) and 1080 cm−1 shifts (C–S stretching of p-ATP). Importantly, the time-dependent surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra showed that the conversion efficiency of p-ATP was mainly dictated by the resonance condition between the tip plasmon mode of Au@Ag core–shell nanostars and the excitation light, as well as the choice of excitation wavelength. These results show that plasmon bands of metal nanostructures play an important role in the efficiency of plasmon-driven photocatalysis.

Résumé :
The recent development of silver nanostars (Ag-NSs) is promising for improved surface-enhanced sensing and spectroscopy, which may be further exploited if the mechanisms behind the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) are identified. Here, we show that LSPRs in Ag-NSs can be obtained with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations by considering the nanostars as combination of crossed nanorods (Ag-NRs). In particular, we demonstrate that an apparent tail at large wavelengths ( λ ≳ 700 nm) observed in the extinction spectra of Ag-NSs is due to a strong dipolar plasmon resonance, with no need to invoke heterogeneity (different number of arms) effects as is normally done in the literature. Our description also indicates a way to tune the strongest LSPR at desired wavelengths, which is useful for sensing applications.

Résumé :
The interaction of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) with Au or Ag nanospheres, Au nanostars, and Ag nanoprisms was investigated using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The SERS investigation showed that adsorption of MEH-PPV strongly depends on the nature of the nanoparticle surface. On gold nanostars that present a thick layer of capping polymer, SERS spectrum is only observed in relatively concentrated MEH-PPV solution (1 mmol L−1). On the other hand, Au and Ag nanospheres present SERS spectra down to 10−6 mol L−1 and no chemical interaction of MEH-PPV and metal surface is observed. The spectra of MEH-PPV on Ag nanoprisms with PVP as stabilizing agent suggest that the capping polymer induces a planar conformation of MEH-PPV and consequently an increase of conjugation length. These results give support for the application of MEH-PPV on optoelectronics in which interfacial effects are critical in the device efficiency and stability.
