Résumé :
Background/Context Over the last two decades, youth involvement in policy advocacy has increased sharply, through youth councils, organizing coalitions, and new media forums. Currently 12 states and 140 American cities have youth councils or commissions established to advise policymakers on the impact of their legislation on youth. Despite their growing presence, we know little about what these councils do, how they are viewed, or how, if at all, they influence policy-making processes. Purpose This study explores manifestations of adultism during the first 4 years of the Ballou City Youth Commission (BCYC) from the perspectives of 22 youth members and adult allies. Research Design Though primarily interview-based, this study also draws on field notes collected during a BCYC meeting and a BCYC community forum and organizational artifacts to explore the nature and dynamics of adultism as they played out in BCYC. Data Collection and Analysis In-depth, individual interviews were conducted with 11 current and former youth commissioners and 11 adults who represented the target audience for BCYC's work or who partnered with the commission on various initiatives. The theoretical framework of adultism guided the analysis, which included open and axial coding, memo writing, and the construction of matrices and charts to track emergent patterns. Findings/Results Using a critical theory lens, we find that adultism has played a prominent role in limiting BCYC from achieving the goals laid out in its charter. We identify a “roller coaster of adultism” that illustrates how weak initial structures coupled with deeply entrenched views of youths’ limited capacity adversely impacted the functioning of BCYC and propelled a cycle of externalized and internalized adultism. Conclusions The study adds to the scant literature on youth voice in public policy, raises six clear implications for policy and practice, and extends theory by illustrating the complex ways in which external and internalized forms of adultism interact with and reinforce each other.

Résumé :
Abstract Despite the increased risks and vulnerabilities that children and young people face due to the Coronavirus (covid-19), they are also some of the most active in their participatory responses to this global emergency. Drawing on transdisciplinarity, this paper considers how covid-19 has opened up new spaces and opportunities for the participation of children. For example, young people across the globe have been actively involved in raising digital awareness about covid-19, participating in environmental activism, and engaging in unique educational opportunities. While children and young people are often constructed as vulnerable, innocent and in need of protection, this pandemic reveals that they can transcend these adultist constructs.

AbstractVery little has been written about the interaction between disability, homophobia, heterosexism and adultism as they impinge upon the experiences and social practice of disabled young people. This paper takes the view such interaction may be described in terms of the social construction of multiple others which hinges on the value judgements, the social distance and the knowledge which form the relationship between Self and Other (Todorov 1982, p. 185). Taking a ‘narrative’ approach to identity, it draws on the accounts of disabled adults that describe retrospectively the emergence of gay or lesbian identity in adolescence, and on discourses of lesbian and gay identity among groups of disabled young people in contemporary social and educational settings1. It aims to show that when research or pedagogy ‘are viewed as public conversations with difference, through sameness – conversations that are neither objectivist nor subjectivist’ (Bell 1998) – important information can emerge about the social construction of these four important dimensions of institutionalised oppression that can be used in the service of social change.

Résumé :
e20552 Background: Attending to symptoms and side effects promotes safe and effective delivery of cancer therapies. Educated and supported patients (Pts) may be able to self-manage symptoms (Sx) and know when to contact the clinician, avoiding emergency department visits (EDV) or hospital admissions (HA). The web-based Electronic Self Report Assessment for Cancer (ESRA-C) is an easy-to-use, automated program for assessing and teaching about symptom and quality of life issues (SQI) and has been shown to improve communication and reduce symptom distress over the course of active therapy. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to explore the impact of the ESRA-C intervention on rates of EDV and HA. Methods: AdultPts with all cancer types and stages treated in medical and radiation oncology at a comprehensive cancer center used ESRA-C to self-report SQI during new anti-cancer therapy, with summary reports delivered to clinicians. Patients were randomized to assessment-only ESRA-C (control) or the ESRA-C intervention adding self-monitoring and education and coaching between clinic visits. We analyzed group differences on EDV and HA using descriptive statistics and a two group unequal variance t-test. Results: Among 663 Pts, 34 out of 327 control Pts made 47 EDV vs 30 out of 336 intervention Pts made 42 visits. Likewise, 36 control Pts had 59 HA vs 36 intervention Pts who had 41 HA during the study duration. The majority of EDV (87%) and HA (88%) were Sx-related. The frequency of Sx-related events (EDV or HA) was higher in the control (n=94) vs the intervention group (n=71). The mean number of unplanned events were 0.29 and 0.21 per patient in the control and intervention groups, respectively (p=0.24). Conclusions: Although the trial sample size was not planned to test differences in EDV or HA, the ESRA-C intervention, compared with assessment alone, may have reduced symptom-related EDV and HA in a large sample of patients during active cancer treatment. If we are able to reduce Sx-related unplanned visits and admissions from more than 1 of 4 patients to 1 of 5 patients with an automated, patient-centered system, we can anticipate substantial cost savings when scaled to the volume of most comprehensive cancer centers. Pascuzzi, Debora.

At the base of the current dissertation is the question of whether the narration of memories, and especially unpleasant memories, is an effective tool for regulating emotions. The aim of this work is to investigate the relationship between autobiographical narrative and emotion regulation, considering the type of listening’s stance of the listener and the emotion regulation characteristics of the narrator. This research was implemented on adolescents and emerging adults, since memories of these life stages are particularly significant for the identity development. Two studies were conducted. In the first study, two contrasting listening stances –empathic listening VS distracted listening – were compared. Findings showed that a distracted listener negatively impacted the emotional tone of memories, the narrative coherence, and the narrative emotion regulation. These results were clear for emerging adults, but not for adolescents. The second study was realized to compare the empathic listening with two other narration contexts: the standard listening context, in which the listener was attentive but not empathic, and the written narration context. Results showed that all these narration contexts had a positive influence on the emotional tone of memories and the narrative features, demonstrating that the empathic listening is not always required. However, the empathic listening was critical for narrative emotion regulation. Overall, this work supports the idea that the context in which narration occurs must be considered, as well as the emotion regulation, in the meaning of an individual characteristic and a process of the storytelling. In the future, these processes should be clarified in adolescence and investigated in the entire life cycle.

Résumé :
This book offers a novel and provocative perspective on how we came to be living in an age of political immaturity and social turmoil. The book argues it's because a teenage mentality has slowly gripped the adult world. It contends that many features of how we live today — some regrettable, others beneficial — can be traced to the emergence of a more defined adolescent stage of life in the early twentieth century, when young people started spending their formative, developmental years with peers, particularly in formal school settings. The book shows how adolescent qualities have slowly seeped upward, where they have gradually reshaped the norms and habits of adulthood. The effects over the long haul, the book contends, have been profound, in both the private realm and in the public arena of political, economic, and social interaction. Our teenage traits remain part of us as we move into adulthood, so much so that some now need instruction manuals for adulting. This book challenges our assumptions about the boundaries between adolescence and adulthood. Yet despite a cultural system that seems to be built on the ethos of Generation Me, it's not all bad. In fact, there has been an equally impressive rise in creativity, diversity, and tolerance within society: all traits stemming from core components of the adolescent character. The book helps make sense of the impulsivity driving society and encourages us to think anew about civic reengagement.
