The monograph examines the peculiarities of the formation and development of the idea of light, which originated in Byzantine Orthodoxy and became a characteristic feature of Russian culture. The ancient Russian pagan worldview defined light as a vital property of nature, as a sacred creative energy striving to pour out. After the adoption of Orthodoxy, light did not lose its transformative characteristics, moving into the spiritual sphere and becoming an accompanying attribute and testimony of holiness. This chapter discusses how the pharmaceutical industry’s actions affected the accomplishments of the Decade of Pain Control and Research, which began on January 1, 2001, following almost two decades of rising concern over the inadequate treatment of chronic pain in the United States. To tell the story of this decade we must describe the accompanying problem of drug diversion and abuse. The development in 1995 of a new opioid product called OxyContin, its aggressive marketing, the morbidity and mortality associated with its misuse, and the eventual felony conviction in 2007 of the drug’s sponsor for fraudulent claims and marketing practices, affected the Decade in unexpected ways. The response by Congress and the regulatory community to what they termed an “epidemic” of prescription drug abuse produced long-lasting policy changes. The chapter also touches on the peculiar and sometimes troubling relationship between the regulators and the regulated.

Recent research suggests that populations of microbes that live in our digestive, reproductive, and respiratory tracts are as important to our wellbeing as the avoidance and treatment of infection. The average human comprises 40 trillion eukaryotic cells and an accompanying microbiome of 100 trillion bacteria, mostly in the gut, and one quadrillion viruses. In addition to bacteria and viruses, the microbiome contains archaea, plus fungi and other eukaryotic microorganisms. The majority of these microbes are beneficial and only a minority have the potential to cause disease.

This chapter examines the turn to the body that occurred in sport history in the late twentieth century, tracing its connections to the emergence of structuralism in postwar French social theory. Focusing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault, the chapter argues that the “somatic turn” in sport history drew inspiration from an accompanying linguistic turn in French social theory and philosophy. As part of this discussion, the chapter discusses studies of the body in sport history influenced by Bourdieu and Foucault and concludes with some issues, problems, and implications of the somatic/linguistic turn in current historical research.

Peirce’s categories can be used to develop an objective phenomenological vocabulary. Contrary to the derisive attitudes of John Locke and Thomas Nagel, Peirce’s vocabulary can be used to describe how seeing a scarlet red is like hearing a trumpet’s blare. Both experiences involve qualities and qualities of qualities with high intensities. Both experiences are vivid and have an accompanying feeling of vividness, each of which is of a high intensity. In neither case can the object of experience be altered by direct, immediate, and voluntary mental effort. Moreover, both experiences are unlike vaguely remembering a pillow falling into one’s lap. Peirce’s account is corroborated by research into synesthesia. Peirce’s phenomenological vocabulary may also be used to develop descriptions of what it is like to be a bat.

Before dialecticism became a topic of empirical inquiry in cultural psychology, scholars in related disciplines had discussed dialecticism as a model of human development, as an essential component of maturity and wisdom. This chapter bridges these two perspectives, comparing conceptualizations of dialecticism in developmental and cultural psychology. After reviewing historical portrayals of dialecticism in various philosophical traditions, the chapter provides a comparison of historical characterizations with the contemporary treatment of dialecticism in human development and cultural psychology. Both streams—developmental and cross-cultural—are proposed as essential for an integral understanding of the construct. Subsequently, the chapter discusses the emerging developmental models of dialecticism across the lifespan and reviews the accompanying empirical evidence, situating it in a cross-cultural context. It concludes with an outline of future directions of research on dialectical thought, with attention to psychological and sociocultural processes engendering dialecticism across the lifespan.

There is growing recognition that stigma plays an important role in producing health disparities between members of socially advantaged and disadvantaged (marginalized) groups. This chapter defines stigma, describes differences among stigmatized marks, and discusses the functions that stigma may serve for individuals, groups, and societies. It also provides a conceptual model of the pathways by which stigma relates to health. This model posits that socially conferred marks that are devalued in society are the basis for four key stigma processes: enacted stigma, felt stigma, internalized stigma, and anticipated stigma. These stigma processes lead to stress and accompanying individual-level affective, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological responses, as well as to social and community-level exclusion from important domains of life that collectively have downstream negative consequences for health. This chapter provides an integrative overview of the chapters in the current volume and concludes with suggestions for future research on stigma and health.

This chapter explores the relationship between music and physical gesture, drawing on recent research on the spontaneous gestures that accompany speech. Such gestures appear to be motivated by thought processes that are independent from speech and that in many cases offer analogs for dynamic processes. The chapter outlines the infrastructure for human communication that supports language and gesture as well as music. This outline provides a framework for exploring how music and gesture are similar and for how they are different. These comparisons are made through analyses of the movements Fred Astaire makes while accompanying himself at the piano in the 1936 film Swing Time and those Charlie Chaplin makes to Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5 in the 1941 film The Great Dictator. These analyses further explicate the role of syntactic processes and syntactic layers in musical grammar and introduce referential frameworks, which serve as perceptual anchors for syntactic processes.

This chapter considers the period from the onset of major Muslim military advance to Aurangzeb’s death. In general, the population continued to grow slowly and fitfully. We can only speculate about variation in the rate of population growth. The fourteenth-century Black Death perhaps touched parts of the north-west. But there is no evidence of a major demographic collapse. The seventeenth century, the peak period of Mughal rule, was very challenging—for example, in terms of famines and plague. Nevertheless, the population seems to have grown. Analysts have used deficient data, for example on the cultivated land area, to try to estimate the size of India’s population c.1595. Considering previous work, a figure of 125 million seems a reasonable compromise. However, given the inadequate nature of the data, this number is very far from firm. Previous research appears to have overstated the size of Mughal cities and the accompanying level of urbanization.

Young and Lonely The Social Conditions of Loneliness gathers evidence of young people’s experience of loneliness and connection from a youth co-produced research project and locates these within longstanding cultural and historical discussions of loneliness and solitude, friendship and belonging. The study explores loneliness and the experiences of connection/disconnection and inclusion/exclusion with a particular focus on the experience of loneliness in young lives and on how it is navigated when it is first encountered. It proposes that loneliness should not be considered only or even primarily as another psychological disorder or contagion, whilst recognising that severe loneliness may be an aspect of and connected to severe forms of psychological and emotional distress. The ways that young people encounter loneliness have resonance across the age spectrum and for questions of social organisation more generally. How do societies respond to great demographic change? This question lingers over the contemporary politics of the United States and other countries where persistent immigration has altered populations and may soon produce a majority minority milestone, where the original ethnic or religious majority loses its numerical advantage to one or more foreign-origin minority groups. Until now, most of our knowledge about large-scale responses to demographic change has been based on studies of individual people’s reactions, which tend to be instinctively defensive and intolerant. We know little about why and how these habits are sometimes tempered to promote more successful coexistence. To anticipate and inform future responses to demographic change, Majority Minority looks to the past. The book entails historical analysis and interview-based fieldwork inside six of the world’s few societies that have already experienced a majority minority transition to understand what factors produce different social outcomes. This research concludes that, rather than yield to people’s prejudices, states hold great power to shape public responses and perceptions of demographic change through political institutions and leaders’ rhetoric. Then, in subsequent survey research, the book identifies novel ways that leaders can leverage nationalist sentiment to reduce the appeal of nativism by framing immigration and demographic change in terms of the national interest. Grounded in rich narratives and novel statistical data, Majority Minority reveals the way this contentious milestone and its accompanying identity politics are ultimately subject to unifying or divisive governance.

Through archaeological and archival research from sites associated with the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Disposing of Modernity explores the changing world of urban America at the turn of the twentieth century. Featuring excavations of trash deposited during the fair, Rebecca Graff’s first-of-its kind study reveals changing consumer patterns, notions of domesticity and progress, and anxieties about the modernization of society. Graff examines artifacts, architecture, and written records from the 1893 fair’s Ohio Building, which was used as a clubhouse for fairgoers in Jackson Park, and the Charnley-Persky House, an aesthetically modern city residence designed by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Many of the items she uncovers were products that first debuted at world’s fairs, and materials such as mineral water bottles, cheese containers, dentures, and dinnerware illustrate how fairs created markets for new goods and influenced consumer practices. Graff discusses how the fair’s ephemeral nature gave it transformative power in Chicago society, and she connects its accompanying “conspicuous disposal” habits to today’s waste disposal regimes. Reflecting on the planning of the Obama Presidential Center at the site of the Chicago World’s Fair, she draws attention to the ways the historical trends documented here continue in the present.

The Naked Craft Network (NCN) was a multi-component, international collaborative research project (2014–2017) that investigated topical issues in contemporary craft practice in Scotland and Canada. Through an innovative combination of practice and theoretical reflection, bridging design history and theory, practice-based research and public engagement, the project brought together an international network of practice- based researchers, writers, curators and industry partners. They questioned the value of craft as a practice, an historical phenomenon and a contemporary experience. The main outputs from the project were a cluster of interlinking research events, including residencies, workshops, a public education programme and accompanying symposia. The research was disseminated to the public through a touring exhibition of Canadian and Scottish craft that was accompanied by a catalogue with commissioned essays. Led by craft historian and theorist Juliette MacDonald and Dr Sandra Alfoldy, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Canada, NCN was the first major craft partnership between Scotland and Canada and involved four academics, 23 professional craftspeople, five curators, and three research assistants. Given the financial challenges students face in higher education, my hope with this textbook is to draw on my 20+ years of entrepreneurship experience and academic research to compile resources that reflect the general aspects of starting a business. Business Startup and Entrepreneurship: Canada is an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook that focuses on the practical, current, and relevant topics associated with starting a business in Canada. This broad practical approach allows instructors to introduce these simple chapters to build a basic understating of the essentials to startups. Along with this textbook is an accompanying Business Plan Workbook, helping students to work through a business idea chapter-by-chapter that hopefully culminates in a well thought-through startup plan. In my experience teaching introductory entrepreneurship courses, developing a business plan supports deep-level learning that is displayed through critical analysis, creativity, and networking. The design of the business plan has been simplified and tested over the past three years with over 750 students from diverse cultures and academic disciplines. It is my recommendation that students work on the business plan throughout the duration of the course as they complete chapters to reaffirm important lessons. Students may find tasks such as finance and accounting difficult, which is why an Excel Worksheet accompanies the business plan to help prepare financial reports for their proposed businesses.

EcoVelo Tour Project (Fostering enhanced ecotourism planning along the Eurovelo cycle route network in the Danube region (DTP-055-2.2) along with the EuroVelo 6, 11 and 13 cycling routes at the Danube develops ecotourism and cycling tourism and ecotourism. The project aims to exploit synergies with the EuroVelo network, communicate effectively about ecotourism in the region, ensure the preservation of cultural and natural assets including biodiversity, landscape elements, and air quality while developing local ecotourism strategies. Ecotourism is a new form of travel that seeks to reduce the negative effects of mass tourism in the 20th century. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources defined ecotourism as "environmentally responsible visiting of relatively unspoilt natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present), that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations" (Hector Ceballos-Lascurain, Tourism, Ecotourism and Protected Areas, 1996). Ecotourism is thus a complex concept that emphasizes the importance of preserving local values, the natural environment and culture. This study builds upon the research on ecotourism in the Danube region carried out by national stakeholders from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Slovakia. The study aims to provide a helping hand for project partners in formulating policy recommendations at national as well as regional levels. In addition, this study also provides professional support and exchange of experiences to those countries where ecotourism is not yet on an advanced level.

What would sports betting advertising be like if it were handled more responsibly? will analyse the structure of sports betting advertising, in an attempt to understand whether such advertising could become a public health issue. This briefing examines different works that have led to scientific publications and presents their main conclusions as well as the major recommendations for gambling companies and regulators. 2. How can artificial intelligence reduce road traffic accidents and prevent congestion? This briefing seeks to present the benefits of the TIMON system for optimising traffic management and urban transport network operations in cities, directly supporting transport managers in their decision-making processes for transport operations. 3. Gender inequalities in matters of drug addiction: how does alcoholism really affect women? aims to study the phenomenon of drug dependence from a gender perspective. This involves identifying what kind of socio-cultural and psychological representations are involved in women, according to their gender role, so that they develop a series of risk factors for them, both for the beginning of consumption and in its continuity. In addition, the research team proposes guidelines for a specialized care for women in this area, in order to increase the effectiveness of required interventions. 4. Key points for supporting and accompanying victims and survivors of human trafficking for sexual exploitation is intended as a working document for specialists involved in the prevention and detection of cases and in support and care for victims. It seeks to fill the current gaps and meet the needs of women victims of trafficking providing a better response to their situations.
