Résumé :
Human resource development particularly improved skills impact rather significantly economic growth and the productivity levels. Whereas research on productivity following Abramovitz (1956) and Solow (1957), seminal articles on sources of growth, highlighted the importance of human resource development,1 the endogenous theory of economic growth has brought human capital at the centre stage of the growth process [Romer (1990, 1993)].2 While the contribution of productivity towards growth rate of GDP in Pakistan has been one-third, the increase in total factor productivity has more to do with catching up than the improvement in human resource development, major source of sustained growth [see Kemal, Din, and Qadir ( 2002)].

Résumé :
Economists agree that human capital is an important determinant of economic growth [Arrow (1962); Aghion and Howitt (1992)]. Human capital-led growth generally concludes the positive impact of the two with the help of existing developed theories and empirical evidences. Nonetheless, the standard empirical result of a direct relationship between human capital (however measured) and economic growth, has been criticised on several fronts. First, the impact of other growth-related factors like quality of education, health of the labour force, inflation, corruption, unemployment, rule of law, etc. should not be ignored. These endogenous characteristics of a country are included in Becker‘s (1993) definition of human capital. In addition, as noted by Abramovitz (1986), social capabilities are important in the adoption and diffusion of technologies but countries differ in social capabilities. Therefore, to the extent to which human capital contributes to economic growth through innovation, its effect is conditioned by the country‘s social capabilities which include factors like quality of institutions and governance.

While the income per capita in the developing world since the turn of the Millennium has grown faster than that of the developed world, the question whether there is an ongoing process of catching up between countries remains. The notion of income convergence has provided many insights into the sources for long-run growth but has largely neglected the role of social capabilities in economic development. By social capabilities we mean the qualification of the ‘theory of convergence’ which asserts that productivity growth rates between countries tend to vary inversely with regard to productivity levels. The social capabilities approach holds that a country’s potential for rapid growth is strong when “it is technologically backward but socially advanced” (see Abramovitz, 1986:388). This means that the potential to catch up under globalization is strongest for countries in which social capabilities are developed to allow successful use of technologies and where institutional arrangements are conducive to economic progress. Yet there is no clear agreement in the literature on the main components of social capabilities or how to measure them. Our framework argues that the role of capabilities in catching up needs to understand them in terms of structural transformation, economic and social inclusion, state´s autonomy and accountability. Without progress in these dimensions within-country inequality may increase and might in turn lead to stagnating growth and slim prospects for global income convergence.

Résumé :
Hepatocytes in vivo express Alpha and Mu but not Pi forms of glutathione S-transferase (GST). GST P (a fetal Pi form) appears in rat hepatocytes after 2 days in primary culture, which suggests that hepatocytes may undergo dedifferentiation [Abramovitz, Ishigaki and Listowsky (1989) Hepatology 9, 235-239]. However, in this and other studies, primary rat hepatocyte cultures were shown by immunohistochemistry to contain significant numbers of lipocytes (Ito cells). Freshly isolated lipocytes contained GST activity when assayed with chlorodinitrobenzene (680 nmol/min per mg), and expression of Alpha, Mu and Pi forms of GST was detected by Western-blot analysis. Expression of GST P persisted during culture of the lipocytes. In situ hybridization of the cultured cells was performed to define whether hepatocytes, lipocytes or both expressed the enzyme. Lipocytes in culture contained abundant GST P transcripts. Hepatocytes contained no GST P transcripts after 12 h in culture, and after 24 h, only a few hepatocytes expressed this enzyme. After 48 h in culture all hepatocytes contained GST P transcripts, and the number of transcripts continued to increase up until 72 h. Therefore, in freshly isolated preparations of hepatocytes and early in hepatocyte culture, measurable levels of GST P protein or message appeared to reflect the presence of lipocytes. After 48 h in culture almost all of the GST P reflected expression by the hepatocytes. Lipocytes constitutively expressed Alpha-, Mu- and Pi-class GSTs and had significant intracellular levels of GSH (5.2 nmol/mg of protein). Lipocytes are capable therefore of detoxifying a number of injurious compounds.

Correlates of unprotected sex by client type among female sex workers that inject drugs in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The International Journal Of Alcohol And Drug Research, 4(2), 159-169. doi:http://dx.doi.org/10.7895/ijadr.v4i2.208Aims: Risk environment factors may influence unprotected sex between female sex workers who are also injection drug users(FSW-IDUs) and their regular and non-regular clients differently. Our objective is to identify correlates of unprotected vaginalsex in the context of client type. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 583 FSW-IDUs in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, was analyzed using negativebinomial regression to determine physical, social, economic, and policy risk-environment factors that affect the frequency ofunprotected sex with regular and non-regular clients. Results: Median number of unprotected vaginal sex acts in the past month among FSW-IDUs and their regular and non-regularclients was 11 (IQR 3–30) and 13 (IQR 5–30), respectively. Correlates differed by site and client type and were most closelyassociated with the risk environment. In Tijuana, social factors (e.g., injecting drugs with clients) were independently associatedwith more unprotected sex. Factors independently associated with less unprotected sex across client type and site included socialand economic risk environment factors (e.g., receiving more money for unprotected sex). In the policy risk environment, alwayshaving free access to condoms was independently associated with less unprotected sex among non-regular clients in Tijuana(Risk rate ratio = 0.64; 95% confidence interval 0.43–0.97).Conclusions: Primarily physical, social, and economic risk-environment factors were associated with unprotected vaginal sexbetween FSW-IDUs and both client types, suggesting potential avenues for intervention.

Résumé :
The gradual and then ecstatic acceleration and diversification of Marina Abramović's choices in life and art are the result of her commitment to install and introduce into her performance-machine the power of perpetual mobility. That final line of end/ ings of the horizon disappearing into Nothingness, the line of Death which she touched and invoked in her life and work on many occasions, is neither to be melancholically accepted, nor desperately tamed or fiercely denied. Abramović activates this line of the last horizon, turning it around so that it becomes vital rather than fatal, cyclic rather than liminal, (re)turning - aspace that gives birth to (hyper)productivity. There is a relentless striving to disturb, slow down, curb, disable the work of Time, to change the path of Time's arrow. She endeavours to reconstruct, revitalise, rejuvenate, to extend the duration of the body of her art, the body of performance art and, consequently, of her biological body. A number of methods and mechanisms are used for this purpose - starting from documentation, technical multiplication, substitution, extension and virtualisation and even spectacularisation of her body and the body of her art.

Marina Abramović: In Residence (2015) was a participatory public art project that relied on “facilitators” trained in the Abramović Method. As in other later works of Abramović’s performance practice, the artist’s presence is implied in the bodies of facilitators and participants. Situating In Residence in a longer history of institutional performance takes into account Abramović’s self-positioning as the charismatic undead.

Résumé :
Recent Danish seismological projects involving neotectonic investigations and structural studies have determined the edge of the Baltic Shield underlying Denmark. The most active earthquake zones in Denmark are located in northwestern Jylland and adjoining offshore areas, and in the region around Kattegat, Øresund and north-east Sjælland (Fig. 1). This pattern was originally recognised by Lehmann (1956) and has been confirmed by several later studies, e.g. Gregersen et al. (1998). Recent, more detailed investigations have documented that changes in the pattern of earthquake activity have occurred within a short time span. The most pronounced example of change – possibly related to exploitation of hydrocarbons – is an activity recorded in the Central Graben area of the North Sea that was first documented by Gregersen et al. (1998). The south-western margin of the Precambrian Baltic Shield separates areas of different earthquake activity (Fig. 1; Gregersen et al. 1991). Although lithospheric stresses are more or less uniform in northern Europe, there are pronounced differences in the behaviour of the lithosphere across Denmark. The north-eastern area underlain by the Baltic Shield experiences brittle failure as recorded by common earthquakes, whereas earthquakes are virtually absent in the region southwest of the shield (Fig. 1). The margin of the Baltic Shield as defined by earthquake activity is not identical with that distinguished structurally in sedimentary studies (EUGENO-S Working Group 1988; Vejbæk & Britze 1994), in crustal studies (Abramovitz & Thybo 2000), or by recent studies of the structure of the subcrustal lithosphere (Gregersen et al. 2002; Shomali et al. 2002). The physical edge of the Baltic Shield cannot be uniquely determined on the basis of seismological studies. The earthquakes recorded, although of low magnitude, do give information about the released stresses. The earthquakes seem to be a response to a dominant NW–SE compression, also apparent elsewhere in Scandinavia and northern Europe (Slunga et al. 1984; Slunga 1989; Gregersen 1992; Müller et al. 1992). These stresses are part of the large-scale stress systems associated with continued plate motion pattern (Gregersen & Basham 1989; Zoback et al. 1989). In contrast to present low-magnitude earthquakes, postglacial sediments in northern Scandinavia have preserved features interpreted as caused by earthquakes of magnitudes around 7; these major, c. 9000 years old earthquakes are believed to be related to the post-glacial uplift of Scandinavia (e.g. Arvidsson et al. 1991; Gregersen 2002). Earthquakes are always related to fault activity, but attempts to link recent earthquakes occurring in and around Denmark to geologically known faults have only been partly successful (Gregersen et al. 1996). The most significant fault zone in Denmark, the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone, is only locally active. Recent geodetic and seismic investigations demonstrate that the two sides of the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone are characterised by different patterns of deformation, but the zone itself is not defined by a present-day seismicity trend crossing the central parts of Denmark (Fig. 1).

Résumé :
In the late-19th-century Euro-American theatre of domestic realism, the tête-à-tête on the sitting room set was the signature convention for the staging of intimate relational exchange. Since the 1980s Marina Abramović has been reproducing this sedentary bodily arrangement in much of her work. While Abramović has sought to position her performance art in counterpoint to white bourgeois theatre, her sedentary dramas are haunted by the ghosts of this seemingly unrelated genealogy of performance.
