Résumé :
EBSCO's Library and Information Science Source (LISS) is a subscription database that was developed from the merger of EBSCO and H.W. Wilson in 2011. LISS features journals, periodicals, conference proceedings, monographs, and book reviews in the field of library and information studies. It includes full-text access to over 180 journals in both English and other languages. It also provides extensive indexing, a comprehensive thesaurus, and coverage from as early as the 1930s. The database's lack of OA content is at odds with library science's increasing commitment to freely accessible content. LISS will be of the most interest to institutions with large library staff as well as those that offer a degree program in library and information studies.

Résumé :
Purpose Data science is a relatively new field which has gained considerable attention in recent years. This new field requires a wide range of knowledge and skills from different disciplines including mathematics and statistics, computer science and information science. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the study that explored the field of data science from the library and information science (LIS) perspective. Design/methodology/approach Analysis of research publications on data science was made on the basis of papers published in the Web of Science database. The following research questions were proposed: What are the main tendencies in publication years, document types, countries of origin, source titles, authors of publications, affiliations of the article authors and the most cited articles related to data science in the field of LIS? What are the main themes discussed in the publications from the LIS perspective? Findings The highest contribution to data science comes from the computer science research community. The contribution of information science and library science community is quite small. However, there has been continuous increase in articles from the year 2015. The main document types are journal articles, followed by conference proceedings and editorial material. The top three journals that publish data science papers from the LIS perspective are the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the International Journal of Information Management and the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology. The top five countries publishing are USA, China, England, Australia and India. The most cited article has got 112 citations. The analysis revealed that the data science field is quite interdisciplinary by nature. In addition to the field of LIS the papers belonged to several other research areas. The reviewed articles belonged to the six broad categories: data science education and training; knowledge and skills of the data professional; the role of libraries and librarians in the data science movement; tools, techniques and applications of data science; data science from the knowledge management perspective; and data science from the perspective of health sciences. Research limitations/implications The limitations of this research are that this study only analyzed research papers in the Web of Science database and therefore only covers a certain amount of scientific papers published in the field of LIS. In addition, only publications with the term “data science” in the topic area of the Web of Science database were analyzed. Therefore, several relevant studies are not discussed in this paper that are not reflected in the Web of Science database or were related to other keywords such as “e-science,” “e-research,” “data service,” “data curation” or “research data management.” Originality/value The field of data science has not been explored using bibliographic analysis of publications from the perspective of the LIS. This paper helps to better understand the field of data science and the perspectives for information professionals.

Résumé :
Information regarding the relationship between laboratory seed vigor testing and seedling field emergence is very important to estimate seed performance after sowing and help producers adopt the best procedures to improve stand establishment. The objective of the present study was to relate accelerated aging (AA) test results to soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] seedling field emergence results based on data obtained over three agricultural years. The following evaluations were made: seed water content, standard germination, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and seedling field emergence. There was a close association between planting environmental conditions, seed physiological quality and seedling field emergence. The most accurate predictions were obtained for AA values > 90%, when field emergence was higher than 80% (r² = 0.90). Based on the results it was concluded that the AA test provided an accurate estimate of field emergence of soybean seedlings. However, as seedbed environmental conditions became less favorable, the ability of the AA test to estimate field performance significantly decreased.

The advent of the internet has revolutionized the way scientists communicate their research results increasing the power to disseminate and to access scientific production. This fact was responsible to restructure the scientific information flow that has incorporated its own characteristics from the digital culture. The Open Archives Initiative constituted the infrastructure that supports this restructuring. It was also responsible for the institutionalization of a model called e-prints repositories (ER), that stores, disseminates and promotes scientific production, published or not, in a place managed by the scientific community itself, that allows the inclusion of their public commmentaries about contents of that production. The hypothesis of this work suggests that the adherence to this model by the scientific communities depends on the level of understanding and acceptance, of the profile of the field interfering with the adoption of the innovation and its legitimation. Through a case study of Brazilian researchers from the Communication Sciences field it had been carried out the electronic focus group technique among 18 researchers, whose profile was formed by researches leaders registered at CNPq with backgroung in the field. The exploratory study identified many questions present in the dynamics of scientific communication of the field leading to proof of the hypothesis. From among results, distinguish low perception of that this model optimized the scientific information flow and strong tendency to not accept the model becauce of field profile. In conclusion, the level of adherence to the model is inserted in a medium to low scale.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to test Lotka’s law of scientific publication productivity using the methodology outlined by Pao (1985), in the field of Library and Information Studies (LIS). Lotka’s law has been sporadically tested in the field over the past 30+ years, but the results of these studies are inconclusive due to the varying methods employed by the researchers. A data set of 1,856 citations that were found using the ISI Web of Knowledge databases were studied. The values of n and c were calculated to be 2.1 and 0.6418 (64.18%) respectively. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) one sample goodness-of-fit test was conducted at the 0.10 level of significance. The Dmax value is 0.022758 and the calculated critical value is 0.026562. It was determined that the null hypothesis stating that there is no difference in the observed distribution of publications and the distribution obtained using Lotka’s and Pao’s procedure could not be rejected. This study finds that literature in the field of library and Information Studies does conform to Lotka’s law with reliable results. As result, Lotka’s law can be used in LIS as a standardized means of measuring author publication productivity which will lead to findings that are comparable on many levels (e.g., department, institution, national). Lotka’s law can be employed as an empirically proven analytical tool to establish publication productivity benchmarks for faculty and faculty librarians. Recommendations for further study include (a) exploring the characteristics of the high and low producers; (b) finding a way to successfully account for collaborative contributions in the formula; and, (c) a detailed study of institutional policies concerning publication productivity and its impact on the appointment, tenure and promotion process of academic librarians.

Résumé :
We propose that emerging collaboration, or groupware, technology that supports synchronous interaction among students and faculty can add new aspects to the traditional distance learning and university course models. To explore this assumption we taught a masters' level university course using collaboration technology. In our approach, collaboration technology (integrated synchronous audio- and video-conferencing, electronic whiteboard and shared application tools) was used to provide students at universities in different countries opportunities to participate in interactive class exercises and discussions, and to do class assignments together. Students also participated in traditional, face-to-face class seminars, discussions and exercises at their local university. Thus students learned using collaboration technology and traditional methods. In this paper we describe the course and discuss students' evaluations of the course, their collaboration with each other, and collaboration technology used during the course. Students evaluated the course and their collaborative experiences very highly but reported unique challenges and had mixed impressions with respect to the technology. Challenges included establishing interpersonal communication and meeting commitments. In general, students judged collaboration technology lower than e-mail and telephony in characteristics such as social presence, participation and ease of use. However, there were differences in evaluations among students in Chapel Hill and Oulu implying cultural preferences. In addition, students reported varying degrees of productivity and variety of tasks afforded the technology. These differences were similar for students in Chapel Hill and Oulu, implying individual preferences influenced evaluation of the technology. These results appear to imply that students need to learn principles of collaboration in addition to the technology for collaborative learning across distances to occur, and that a variety of technologies are needed to accommodate cultural and individual differences among students.

Résumé :
The academic field of political science in Europe is studied in this thesis which examines the application of bibliometrics for domain analysis. It takes its point of departure in the domain analytic approach outlined by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen, which claims the study of domains as central for information specialists to be able to identify information needs in their fields of practice. Three features of the domain were studied by the use of bibliometric methods. Data was extracted from the Web of Science. Impact Factor was used to select 50 journals from each of the years 1999, 2004 and 2009. Only items published by authors with European addresses were included. Co-word analysis was used to study topics within the discipline and several kinds of citation analyses were conducted to examine citation patterns of the domain. Lastly core journals, authors and works were identified by the use of citation analysis and co-citation maps were drawn for the analyses.Several subfields within the domain, as well as some differences in citation patterns of the subfields, were possible to distinguish. The domain showed to be multifaceted, yet specific European research areas were identified. Some significant changes of the citation patterns were apparent between 1999 and 2009. In 2009 there were more references per article, journal articles were cited to a higher degree, relatively older publications were cited to a greater extent and the most cited journals received a larger share of the total amount of citations. The existence of a specific European domain within political science is discussed as well as the diverse characteristics of the subfields and their implications for the bibliometric methods. Finally suggestions are presented of how bibliometrics can be used for domain analysis within library and information science as well as by information service institutions. This paper is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

The aim of this two-years master’s thesis is to examine the role of the body and the importance of nonverbal communication in the library workplace and to explore the possibility of becoming more nonverbally skilled. For this purpose a course was developed and presented to nine librarians in a public library in the vicinity of Stockholm in February, 2011. Qualitative interviews with the librarians were conducted after the course. Important theories for this work were Annemaree Lloyd’s thoughts on corporeality, Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical sociology and John Dewey’s learning by doing. Theories concerning what communication and nonverbal communication really are were essential, as was literature that shows that nonverbal communication is an important aspect in the profession of the librarian. Nonverbal signals of importance in the library setting were identified as being mainly eye contact, smiling, bodily movement towards the library user, tone of voice, proxemics (spatial distances), chronemics (time) and haptics (touch). The study also shows that the design of the library and librarians’ worktools interact with the possibility to communicate nonverbally. The course consisted of exercises normally used in the training of actors. This was based on the theory of Erving Goffman. The learning process was an example of situated learning in that it took place in the library. It also gave the participants an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of nonverbal skills with each other. After the course the participants were given questionnaires with questions about their attitudes and experiences of nonverbal communication and their view on the course. After a week a follow-up questionnaire was distributed, in order to find out if the course had in any way had an impact on their work performance. The investigation shows that nonverbal skills play an important role in the work of the librarian. Training in these skills has long been neglected, since they have for the most part been taken for granted. This study shows, however, that this kind of training is important. The librarians who took part in the course testify that the exercises gave them valuable practice. Nonverbal skills can be taught and learned: and “it is time to bring the body back into the information field”.

Résumé :
Despite more than a decade-long process to transition aircraft maintenance practices from paper-to electronic-based systems, some organizations remain unable to complete this transition. Researchers have indicated that while organizations have invested resources in technology improvements, there remains a limited understanding of the factors that contribute to effectively managing technology-enabled change. The purpose of this case study was to identify and explore socio-technical (ST) factors that inhibit an effective transition from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system for aircraft maintenance. A conceptual model applying theories of change management, technology acceptance, systems thinking, and ST theory informed the research. Thirteen participants provided data via semistructured interviews, field observations, follow-up interviews, other documentation, and a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with open and axial coding techniques to identify themes, which were then crosschecked and triangulated with observation and follow-up interview data. Findings revealed communication issues, a fundamental misconception in training, and a false assumption that all personnel easily acquire computer literacy. Benefits gained from this study should assist maintenance, repair, and overall (MRO) organizations within the Department of Defense to improve current and future technology implementation as the research underscores real-life issues from a comparable organization. The implications for positive social change provide a greater understanding of technology-enabled change and contribute to the development of best practices for technology initiatives that address common ST issues in the MRO workplace.

Résumé :
Tribal college librarians comprise a unique group of library professionals who typically serve in a dual role as both academic librarians and public librarians. Most tribal college libraries are the only library in their respective tribal community, and thus they serve the information needs of both their academic clientele and those of the general public. Additionally, their location in tribal communities necessitates that these library professionals have a deep cultural understanding and appreciation in order to work effectively with their largely Native clientele, whether they themselves are Native or not. This chapter describes the unique professional development needs of tribal college librarians and successful efforts to meet these needs. Advice on grant writing, tips and information on grant seeking with a look towards future trends is also provided.

Résumé :
Traditional libraries were considered as the storehouse for books and available for kings and renowned personalities of the society. Later on, libraries were considered information centres, but with the emergence of ICT, the concept of traditional libraries was changed; the books were replaced by information, and now information is for use for dissemination not for preservation. Tremendous advancement in technological developments is taking place in the field of ICT, so the user demand to change according to change in technology, to meet the demand of users and the library were shifting from traditional libraries to digital libraries, electronic libraries, and virtual libraries. This chapter discusses the relationship between digital and traditional libraries. It takes a critical look at the belief that the information technology revolution has destroyed traditional libraries as well as the librarians working them.

Résumé :
The growth of the information management (IM) discipline and its importance in different socio-economic platforms cannot be over-emphasized. The current development of heterogeneous technologies shows that IM is the focal point of innovations such as blockchain, data science (big data, predictive analytics, etc.), artificial intelligence, automation, etc. This research was motivated by a desire to contribute towards establishing the intellectual identity of IM as a science and as a discipline. An exploration of the inventory of theories and conceptual frameworks enables us to have an understanding of the different methodologies currently being used and therefore define the level of development of the field as a discipline. This chapter aims to present the patterns and trends in theory conducted by different studies during the last 10 years (2009 – 2019). Using a bibliometric approach anchored on descriptive informetrics, the chapter explores the application of theory within the IM field.

Résumé :
The authors discuss in this chapter the emergence of digital library environments of the modern world. The emerging field of digital libraries brings together participants from many existing areas of research. Currently, the field lacks a clear agenda independent of these other area. It is tempting for researchers to think that the field of digital libraries is a natural outgrowth of an already known field. From a database or information retrieval perspective, digital libraries may be seen as a form of federated databases. From a hypertext perspective, the field of digital libraries could seem like a particular application of hypertext technology. From a wide-area information service perspective, digital libraries could appear to be one use of the World Wide Web. From a library science perspective, digital libraries might be seen as continuing a trend toward library automation. New concepts and applications appear fast in the information world. Current exploitation of multimedia technology is changing our understanding of the interconnections of graphics, sound, and images, and the types of information they present. Thus, we need to understand both human psyche and available technologies in order to create and to interpret new expressions. The chapter highlights the benefits of digital information and how the libraries are helpful in enhancing the use of digital information. The chapter shows that libraries can provide Internet access, electronic contents, and training to the users. It explains the changing and changed attitude of information professionals in the present scenario.

Résumé :
The article examines the modern competencies of a specialist in the field of library and IT. Competence-related issues in vocational education today are associated with the highly restricted demands of the environment for future specialist. Besides, soft skills challenge the hard ones in contemporary professionalism. The role of competencies related to analysis and processing of information are in focus. The immensely increasing amounts of research result in a coherent need in a well-organized information operation and analysis. Particular attention should be paid to patent research, since it directly answers the questions whether it is worth developing, or whether this topic is already taken up by competitors. The authors proposed the creation of cooperation between the information and analytical departments of libraries with specialized professionals, for example, scientists, patent experts, marketologists, etc., in order to optimize decision-making process for the relevant branches of science and business. This approach will upgrade the work of specialists and provide an opportunity to conduct a deeper analysis using modern tools.

Résumé :
The present essay analyses a training plan for library professionals. The arguments that support our approach refer to legislation (there is no distance training operational framework for library professionals as part of national lifelong learning design) the evolution of the information science field (there is a knowledge gap between the scientific research in Romania and its evolution in Europe), the need for new e-competence compulsory for any specialist in XXI century(the speed of technology evolution and the diversity of supports impose new competences for information specialists). Fostered as part of a national continuous training strategy since 2000, distance training of library specialists misses from the lifelong learning strategy. Preoccupied by continuous instruction we tested a distance course to observe to what extent the use of electronic platforms enhance the working skills. The Open Learning Library platform is an experimental project that helps us to analyze teaching, learning and assessment of students and professionals in Library and Information Science. It allows tutors to achieve full control of the teaching and examination in an online environment. It is a learning solution, independent of time and space and any trainee can choose a suitable course. The platform is based on Open Source CMS Plone Content Management System built on Zope application written in Phyton and developed by the Plone Foundation. It is software with an attractive interface that allows searching and indexing, and content management for best educational processes and especially allows the communication in real time. The project aims to capitalize the final results in a proposal of application of remote training of librarians at the institutional and national level.

Résumé :
As information resources of all types and disciplines are being stored and retrieved in digital form, libraries are responding to the demands for more effective retrieval of such documents and to provide even more digital access to scholarly and recreational library materials. This has led schools of library and information science to develop special programs, degrees, and certificates in digital librarianship. These programs vary from one school to another, but they all demonstrate the multidisciplinarity of education for librarians who will work specifically with digital librarianship. Library and Information Science education has always had a multidiscipline orientation, with traditional faculty consisting of those with degrees in the fields of sociology, communications, history, public administration, education, engineering, and computer science, as well as advanced degrees in library and information science. But with the advent of special programs in digital librarianship, the curriculum has begun to switch to a multidiscipline curriculum content which may be evolving into a sub-specialization in the field. These trends are examined in this paper and recommendations are made regarding future research needed to determine the advisability and sustainability of this trend.
