Résumé :
Shape optimal design methodology has been used as a design tool in the automotive and aerospace industries for quite some time now. In the present work the hybrid natural shape optimal design approach is used along with a nonlinear programming (NLP) technique to find the optimal shapes of electronic packaging components. The design problems are formulated as min-max problems and linear and materially nonlinear finite element analyses provide the function values. The applicability of the developed methodology is illustrated using a design example that deals with the packaging design of a plastic pad array carrier digital package. The results indicate that the methodology can be used either as an effective way of evaluating different design alternatives or refining existing designs.

Résumé :
Bayesian sequential designs are increasingly receiving attention in recent years, especially in clinical trials and biomedical research. Bayesian sequential design process can utilize the available prior information of the unknown parameters so that a better design can be achieved. In this paper, a hybrid computational method, which consists of the combination of a rough global optima search and a more precise local optima search, is proposed to efficiently search for the Bayesian A-optimal designs for multi-variable generalized linear models. Specifically, Poisson regression models and logistic regression models are investigated. Designs are examined for a range of prior distributions and the equivalence theorem is used to verify the design optimality. Design efficiency for various models were examined. Furthermore, the idea of the Bayesian sequential design is introduced and the Bayesian three-stage A-optimal design approach is introduced for generalized linear models. With the incorporation of the first stage data information into the second stage, the second stage data information into the third stage, the three-stage design procedure improved the design efficiency and produce more accurate and robust designs. The Bayesian three-stage A-optimal designs for Poisson and logistic regression models are evaluated based on simulation studies. The Bayesian three-stage A-optimal design is superior to the two-stage A-optimal design approach in terms of design optimality and efficiency criteria.

This dissertation aims to propose mathematical models and computational tools to optimize the dimension of a heterogeneous vehicle fleet in his size and composition. This work shows models that intend to reduce transportation cost for a heterogeneous fleet compose by own and third vehicles. The models are based in problems such as BPP- Bin packing problem, VRP – Vehicle routing problem and linear programming. The problems have been molded to attend the necessities of the company in the study of case. The results achieved in the application of each model were compared and the computational tools had been analyzed to identify positive and negative points. Résumé :
The primary aim of this research was to design a Seamless Aeroelastic Wing (SAW) structure applicable to a lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Therefore the study focused on optimal design of a SAW structure by utilising the maximum aeroelastic beneficial effect. Although similar to the Active Aeroelastic Wing (AAW) and relevant to the Flapless Air Vehicle Integrated Industrial Research (FLAVIIR), the major difference from them is that a SAW will function as an integrated one piece lifting and control surface. It is designed to produce a desirable wing camber for control by deflecting a hinge-less flexible trailing edge (TE) part instead of a traditional control surface. Attention was firstly paid on the design of a hinge-less flexible trailing edge control surface and the actuation mechanism applicable for a light-weight aircraft (UAV). The proposed mechanism in the SAW TE section has two innovative design features: an open sliding TE and a curved beam and disc actuation mechanism. This type of actuated TE section allows for the SAW having a smooth camber change in a desirable shape with minimum control power demand. This design concept has been simulated numerically and its feasibility has been demonstrated by a test model. The wing structure for a small scale UAV is likely to be over designed in terms of strength, stiffness and weight due to manufacturing constraints. For the optimal wing design, the investigation was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, effort was made to design and model an optimised composite wing box for a minimum weight and maximum flutter speed. Both analytical and numerical methods were used for structural stress, vibration and aeroelastic analyses. In the second stage, the study focused on integrating the TE actuation mechanism with the optimised wing box for detailed understanding of the structure. A finite element analysis was conducted to simulate the SAW TE to ensure that structural strength requirements were satisfied. Furthermore, a study was carried out on the structural dynamic behaviour of the SAW TE section under the aerodynamic pressure to demonstrate its dynamic stability. Hence, the outcome of this research shows that a feasible SAW design for a UAV can be achieved.

Résumé :
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Computation for Design and Optimization Program, 2008.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 100-101).
In the thesis, I derive the optimal operating strategy to maximize the value of a storage facility by exploiting the properties in the underlying natural gas spot price. To achieve the objective, I investigate the optimal operating strategy under three different spot price processes: the one-factor mean reversion price process with and without seasonal factors, the one-factor geometric Brownian motion price process with and without seasonal factors, and the two-factor short-term/long-term price process with and without seasonal factors. I prove the existence of the unique optimal trigger prices, and calculate the trigger prices under certain conditions. I also show the optimal trigger prices are the prices where the marginal revenue is equal to the marginal cost. Thus, the marginal analysis argument can be used to determine the optimal operating strategy. Once the optimal operating strategy is determined, I use it to obtain the optimal value of the storage facility in three ways: 1, using directly the net present value method; 2, solving the partial differential equations governing the value of the storage facility; 3, using the Monte Carlo method to simulate the decision making process. Issues about parameter estimations are also considered in the thesis.

Abstract The performance of a flexible assembly system consisting of a set of work stations linked by a set of transporter stations is modeled by a Markovian queueing network in steady state. Its optimal behavior is characterized such that the throughput rate from the system is maximized, while the probability of finding an arbitrary workpiece waiting inside either each work station or each transporter station in addition to an allowable lenght of time will be sufficiently close to zero.

Résumé :
Abstract We present a Riemannian geometric framework for variational approaches to geometric design. Optimal surface design is regarded as a special case of the more general problem of finding a minimum distortion mapping between Riemannian manifolds. This geometric approach emphasizes the coordinate-invariant aspects of the problem, and engineering constraints are naturally embedded by selecting a suitable metric in the physical space. In this context we also present an engineering application of the theory of harmonic maps.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper deals with automatic generation of motion of a point under both geometric and non-geometric constraints. Optimal point paths are generated which are not only free of collisions with polygonal obstacles representing geometric constraints but also conform to non-geometric constraints such as speed of the motion, a maximum allowable change in the velocity vector and a minimum clearance from the obstacle boundaries. The concept of passage networks and conforming paths on the network are introduced. These are used to provide a new representation of the free space as well as a motion generation algorithm with a computational time complexity of only O(n3.log(n)), where n designates the total number of obstacle vertices. The algorithm finds the shortest or fastest (curved) path that also conforms with preset constraints on the motion of the point. The point paths generated are proved to be optimal while conforming to the constraints.

Abstract This paper presents and compares two optimal synthesis techniques for direct application in creating a robomech-II, the second manipulator presented in a new class of linkage arms called Robomcchs. The first optimal synthesis approach will solve the problem as a nonlinear optimization, with a subset of the device parameters described in a linear system and solved directly in a least squares sense. The second approach will employ a least squares optimization using Lagrange Multipliers to contend with nonlinear constraints. In this paper, each optimal synthesis procedure is developed for the general case and then applied to robomcch-II through an example.

This report describes the results of a research project on reliability-based optimization of pipeline integrity maintenance activities. The objective was to develop models to quantify the effect of different maintenance activities on the structural reliability of pipelines, and to demonstrate how these models can be used in a relaibility-based framework to develop optimal integrity maintenance plans. The approaches developed can be used to prioritize pipeline segments for maintenance and to select the optimal combination of activites for high priority segments. The maintenance decisions considered include the mainteance method, the time interval between events, and the repair criteria for damage detected by inspection. This report also documents the development of a methodology to quantify the effect of maintenance activities on the structural reliability of pipeline systems.
