Résumé :
Wooden structures are a substitute for such concepts as environmental friendliness and naturalness, therefore reinforced concrete structures are currently the main building material for the construction of multi-story buildings in Russia. The idea of building wooden multi-storey buildings is becoming more and more relevant every year. The emergence of new technologies and materials make this area of construction promising. Possible variants of structural systems using wooden elements are considered, based on the existing experience of using wooden structures as load-bearing elements of structures. The existing office building in St. Petersburg is taken as a basis. It is built using reinforced concrete structures. Calculations show, the proposed variants of building models using wooden structures are not inferior in physical, mechanical, and load-bearing indicators to a similar building made of reinforced concrete structures, moreover they surpasses in some cases. The experimental part of the work is aimed at the complete replacement of reinforced concrete structures with wooden ones. The results could make the construction of such structures profitable, but at the same time reducing the time for construction. Confirmation of this fact can be observed on successfully implemented multi-story buildings in European countries.

Résumé :
Multi-storey buildings tend to get damaged mainly during earthquake. Seismic analysis is a tool for the estimation of structural response in the process of designing earthquake resistant structures and/or retrofitting vulnerable existing structures. The principle purpose of this work is to analyze and design a building with a shear wall and also to find the appropriate position of shear wall that result in maximum resistance towards lateral forces and minimum displacement of the structure. In this study, a G+7 multi-storey building of 15 m ×20 m in plan area has been chosen and modelled using ETABS. The developed model was validated by solving manually and the results were validated in ETABS. Thereafter, 4 different new plans were modelled in ETABS located in the same earthquake zone area. These plans have shear wall concepts are implemented on the building at four different locations. Seismic, vibration and response spectrum analysis were performed on these structures. Salient parameters such as storey stiffness, storey displacement and storey drift were computed using the ETABS model. These were compared with that of the frame having no shear walls. By comparing the results obtained at different shear wall locations, the best plan with the shear wall having minimum lateral storey displacement and maximum stiffness is suggested for this location.

Résumé :
The different parameters like base shear, drift, and top storey displacement of G+7 building is evaluated by using time history analysis and response spectrum analysis for the purpose of comparative study of both the analyses using MATLAB and an artificial neural network (ANN). The main objective of present work is to analyse earthquake of different locations like Bhuj, Kobe, Victoria and Elecentro, for time history analysis building is not connected with actuator and it is analysed during seismic motion of building using a MATLAB software. Base shear, drift and top storey displacement is evaluated during this analysis. For response spectrum analysis, first building relates to actuator at top floor. And during seismic motion of building different parameters like base shear, drift and top floor displacement are evaluated using MATLAB software and for evaluation of control force of a design actuator artificial neural network (ANN) is used. From time history analysis, response spectrum analysis test results and graphs for G+7 building it is clear that, when actuator is not connected with building it does not dissipate the energy of seismic motion and base shear of building , drift , and top floor displacement is very high, and in second case when building is connected with actuator at optimal place it gives considerable response during seismic motion of building and base shear of building, drift, and top floor displacement are can considerably reduce using control actuator system.

Résumé :
Abstract: In this day and age of urbanization, there is a strong need for a large-scale high-rise apartment building in every city but high-rise construction systems are extremely difficult to construct in any seismic region due to the intense and disruptive nature of seismic forces. Seismic forces have the highest risk of causing the most harm to high-rise buildings. To meet this need, the Civil Engineering industry is constantly developing new groundbreaking techniques. To solve this problem RCC or steel bracings are provided in high-rise buildings which help to the low down the effect of seismic and wind forces. The main objective of this paper is to locate an effective position and pattern of the RCC X-bracing system in the L- shape multi-storey building which is subjected to seismic forces. According to a previous reference paper, X-bracing produces better results than other bracing systems. Analysis the seven types of frame models are taken – (1) Normal L-shape building without bracing, (2) Xbracing are provided at the face of L-shape building, (3) X-bracing are provided alternative pattern at the face of L-shape building from bottom to top floor, (4) X- bracing are provided zig-zag pattern at the face of L-shape building, (5) X-bracing are provided at the corner of L-shape building, (6) X-bracing are provided alternative pattern at the corner of L-shape building from bottom to the top floor, (7) X-bracing are provided zig-zag pattern at the corner of L-shape building. Developed and evaluated by response spectrum analysis method (Linear dynamic analysis) as per IS 1893-2000 using STAAD PRO V8i. Résumé :
Pile foundation is an effective technique to support buildings in the presence of soft soil and seismic areas. More recently, the rigid inclusions system has also been utilized for founding buildings. Both systems increase the bearing capacity of the soil and allow reducing the total and differential settlements in the structure. However, the study of these systems in a complete and accurate way implies the consideration of the soil–structure interaction (SSI). In order to investigate the impact of different pile toe conditions (including the placement on hard soil, an anchorage and floating piles) in the response of mid-rise buildings, numerical models with a 5-storey frame building founded on the inclusions system (soil–inclusion–platform–structure) are analyzed and compared with the pile system (soil–pile–structure). Fully coupled finite difference numerical models were developed using Flac 3D. The influence of the dynamic characteristics of the structure was considered analyzing buildings with different heights (3 storeys to 7 storeys). The linear elastic perfectly plastic model with a Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion is used to represent the behavior of the soil. Values of the maximum lateral displacements, of the inter-storey drifts and of the shear forces distribution in the buildings, as well as the rocking of the foundation, are presented. Concerning the foundations, efforts and displacements are compared for the different systems. The results show that the type of support condition influences the seismic response of the building and the efforts and displacements in the rigid elements, depending on the foundation system. The efforts at the toe level in the rigid elements are highly influenced by the support conditions, but there is only a slight influence from the head connection.

Résumé :
Abstract Earthquake is one of the most frequent disasters in Indonesia. This is due to the location of Indonesia which is located between 3 active plates, namely the Pacific Plate, the Indo-Australian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. While from 2018 to date the biggest and worst earthquake in the Lombok Earthquake that occurred with magnitude reached 7 on the Richter Scale and hammer earthquakes with magnitude 7.4 on the Richter Scale. One of the frequent failures caused by the earthquake is the soft store. Soft story mainly occurs in office buildings, hotels or apartments which generally have a lobby or area that is intentionally made without walls / dividers, either on the ground floor or the upper floors so that inter-floor fuss will be different. In designing and modeling structures, buildings are generally designed with open frame type port without walls. The height of the column can also cause a difference between different floors. This study will compare between the wallless portal model with a higher level at the bottom of the building, the middle of the building and the top of the building, where a high level with smaller stiffness has the potential to be soft (soft story). In this study using ETABS 9.7.2 program with spectrum response dynamic load based on the 2017 earthquake map. Results The structure period of the results of the analysis with the program in the crack cross section condition was obtained at 2.01 seconds. The shape mode for the three PPKBB, PKBT and PKBA building types has met the requirements where in shape 1 and 2 building models are translating towards the x or y axis while in shape 3 mode they are twisted. The required mass participation ratio value is reached at the 90% percentage reached at the 8th shape mode for the PKBB and PKBT buildings. While for PKBA it is reached in the 5th shape mode. Deviation values for the three types of building PKBB, PKBT and PKBA are still within the permit limit. Keywords: earthquake, soft storey, spectrum response

Résumé :
Peninsular Malaysia lies in a low seismic zone, but its building structures had come across the concrete deterioration due to the seismic ground motion originated from far or near field. Notably, most of the building structures in this country are designed based on wind load only. Moreover, current practice to analyze or design a building such as FEMA 368 and EC8 underestimated the effect of repeated excitations. These guidelines only considered single vibrations to evaluate the framed structure. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the performance of private educational institute reinforced concrete building with generic 3D two storey frame structure under multiple seismic motions. Structural model was examined under series of earthquake motions which include pre-shock, main shock and aftershock scenario. Total of 7 seismic ground motions were selected to quantify the structural frame model by nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. Pseudo-dynamic ground motions were recorded on shaking table ranging from 0.18 g to 0.82 g were applied onto the building model for assessment. The outcome of this study has identified that the low-rise building model survived at higher PGA values. Moderate damages (0.25 ≤ DI < 0.40) were recorded after passing through multiple ground motions. Moreover, low seismic vibrations with large ground movement had caused ground floor storey act as soft storey. The study concluded that low rise building model had higher tendency to absorb lower to higher ‘g’ values and resist the earthquake loading due to the strength of framed structure.

Résumé :
Elastic method of analysis indicates elastic capacity of structures and tells us about location of first yielding but it cannot capture important phenomena’s that control seismic performance of structures during severe ground shaking. Thus, for design and evaluation of structures, inelastic procedures are being used by engineers to understand structural behaviour during earthquakes with the assumption that elastic capacity of structure will be exceeded. Pushover analysis includes pushing the structure using invariant load pattern to get force – deformation relationship. While performing the pushover analysis, it is assumed that structural response is dominated by the fundamental mode. Development of plastic hinges can be monitored during the analysis. In the present study, non-linear pushover analysis using SAP2000 using invariant loading pattern has been carried out with the intention to investigate the relative importance of several factors in the non-linear analysis of frames. Relevant codes (ATC 40, FEMA273, FEMA356 and FEMA440) have been referred.

Résumé :
A history of short stories by Black writers is long overdue. The Geographies of African American Short Stories reveals the importance of thinking about character situated in locales and key cultural settings when engaging short fiction by Black writers. In the process of composing multiple brief narratives, Charles Chesnutt, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Toni Cade Bambara, Alice Walker, Edward P. Jones, and more plotted a diverse range of characters across multiple locations—small towns, a famous metropolis, city sidewalks, rural wooded areas, apartment buildings, theaters, prisons, and more. Ultimately, black short story writers made the depiction of Black characters in varied places and spaces integral to the art of storytelling. The history of short stories also involves the circulation of compositions across dozens of literary collections for nearly a century. Anthology editors, who reprinted hundreds of writers, solidified the significance of a core group of short story writers, whom we might refer to as the Big 7. Using quantitative data and extensive bibliographies, this project reveals how editorial practices shaped the canonical formation of African American short fiction.

Résumé :
Main purpose of this paper is to study the influence of vertical stress on soil liquefaction in urban areas. The literature provides limited information on vertical stress analysis of multiple footings, and, as a result, there is no accurate way to account for the effect of the foundation depth on liquefaction. Additionally, practical methods do not exist for considering the interaction between the neighboring foundations vertical stress and seismic forces in the urban area. Vertical stress distribution was calculated in examining the soil liquefaction potential exhibited by building foundations as a case study. The vertical stresses were chosen randomly for some buildings with foundation depths of 3.00 m; 4.50 and 6.00 m at the Burkent site (Burdur-Turkey). The influence of 5-storey buildings on the liquefaction potential of sandy soils was evaluated in terms of the safety factor (FS) against liquefaction along soil profile depths for different earthquakes. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) results were used based on simplified empirical procedure.

<p>Bažant et al. have proposed a model of a gravity-driven collapse of a tall building which collapses in a progressive-floor collapse after the failure of a single storey. The model allows the re-computation of the structural resistance of the building once the downward movement of the building has been quantified. We give a physically more sound version of the collapse model, and determine the downward movement of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Thereby we reproduce a value for the upward resisting force during the collapse that is similar to what has been achieved by Bažant et al. for the first three seconds of the collapse. However, our method of measurement also includes data up to 9 seconds after collapse initiation. These data show a much bigger upward resistance force between 4 and 7 seconds after collapse initiation.</p>

Résumé :
<p>This study was conducted on the seismic performance of the new DPT 1301/1302 - 61 earthquake design standard in Thailand, the ACI 318-11:2014, and the ASCE 7-16 Standard. The selected sample structure for the case study was an existing five-storey building located in Bangkok. It was designed as a shopping mall having a length of 350 m, a width of 35 m, and a height of 26 m, resulting in a total constructed usable area of 62,000 m2, and consists of shops, restaurants and car-park spaces. Construction started on 15th February 2013, and it was opened on 31st August 2019. Bangkok is situated on a large plain underlain by the thick alluvial and deltaic sediments of the Chao Phraya Basin. The design spectral accelerations, as specified in the previous DPT standard 1302 - 52, were established based on the data of the site characteristics available from the past. However, recent studies have revealed several key features of the site characteristics that are essential for improvement of the previous standard. The structural analysis and design of this building were performed by using computer software programs so as to comply with the previous standard. This paper presents a comparison between the previous and the newly revised standards and examines the design differences by using the selected building as a case study on the structural design of typical existing low-rise buildings in Bangkok.</p>

Résumé :
The significant increase in the price of energy resources leads today's society not only to a reconsideration of energy conservation policies but also to the encouragement of architects, builders, and building owners to use thermal insulation and exterior wall finishing systems. The design of thermal insulation for facades is a constructive decision, in which the layer with thermal insulation properties is fixed on the load-bearing side of the walls, with the help of adhesives and/or by mechanical means, followed by the application of a reinforcement and finishing layer. These operations have the role of ensuring the normative values of the thermal indicators specific to the wall structures, their protection against environmental influences, ensuring the optimal microclimate of the interior compartments of the building as well as providing an attractive, aesthetic appearance to the facades and structural elements. Wet exterior cladding or composite thermal insulation systems using polystyrene (ETICS) provide a complete and very cost-effective solution to meet the above-described goals. However, multiple examples of fires in the scientific literature, with the spread of fire on the support of thermal insulation and finishing systems of buildings, indicate their particular danger. This fire risk is directly related to the chosen structural solution for cladding and the type of thermal insulation material used, being also influenced by noncompliance or violation of specific technical regulations or rules on the fire safety of materials and buildings. Through the application of CFD-based computational fire field models, the associated risks for a custom 7-storey building with external cladding were considered in this study. The aim was to observe the fire spread on one side of the building, insulated using the ETICS exterior insulation and finishing system. As an insulating material, two types of expanded polystyrene (EPS) were used, with different fire resistance properties. The study results demonstrate the importance of choosing the right technical solution in terms of fire safety and the need to apply methods to limit the vertical spread of fire.

Résumé :
Unit Price Method (UPM) and Unit Area Cost Method (UACM) are widely used in the cost of reinforced concrete multi-storey housing buildings. In this study, it is aimed to determine the cost estimation method with high performance (its use will provide an advantage to the estimator over the other) by comparing the cost estimates in the modeling by making “Regression Analysis” (RA), with the data of such struction. In the literature review, studies of equivalent and different structures were evaluated. In modeling; Number of rooms, floor area, total area, number of floors, floor height, facade area, facade void area, Bathroom/wc areas, balcony areas, building height are parameters. UPM and UACM based costs which were created with the data of 2020 of 41 similar structures (38 for modelling, 3 for tests) were used as independent variables, and cost models were created with linear regression analysis. The results were randomly selected and compared with test groups that were not used in these models, and the error rates and performances of the methods were tested. According to the comparison, in the UACM analysis, there was a high R2 value in 6 data and a low error rate in 8 predictions; In the UPM analysis, it was determined that an equally high R2 value and a low error rate occured in 7 predictions. As a result, UACM reached a better performance in finding the estimated cost; It has been observed that using it in cost estimation gives better results. However, even if UACM performed better, the difference in error rates is very low, at 2.7%.

Résumé :
<p>NHNY Via Verde is a global model of sustainable housing development. Located in a Bronx brownfield, the 294,000 SF structure contains 222 residential units with 40,000 SF of green roofs and open space. Cascading buildings surrounding a central courtyard consists of a 21 story tower, 16- to 7-story midrise and 5 to 3-story low-rise. Interconnected, accessible green roofs provide continuous access from the courtyard to 12<span>th</span> level roof: the “via verde” or “green way”. Primary structure consists of cast-in-place concrete at the tower and concrete masonry bearing walls with precast concrete plank at mid- and low-rises. These conventional materials are arranged in unconventional ways to maximize efficiency, generating the architectural unit layout from optimal plank spans and eliminating façade bearing walls for prefabricated façades with sunshades and balconies. Secondary structural steel framing supports low rise storefronts, extensive roof PV panel arrays and a rainwater catchment system. Fly ash replacement was maximized in all concrete, and the time effect on strength gain was managed in construction. The large building volume required internal building separations with three independent structures engineered for drift compatibility. Foundation pile capacities vary to optimize efficiency to wide-ranging building heights.</p>

Résumé :
Abstract The 2016 edition of ASCE 7, Minimum Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures, contains a brand new Chapter 6 on Tsunami Loads and Effects. This new chapter applies to the tsunami design of all Risk Category III (high occupancy) and IV (essential) buildings, and potentially many taller Risk Category II (regular) buildings, in coastal communities in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii. These provisions can also be applied to other communities exposed to tsunami hazard, including Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and communities outside the US. This paper shows an example of how the new tsunami design provisions would apply to the design of prototypical multi-story coastal reinforced concrete buildings at different locations on the US Pacific Coast. The prototypical Risk Category II buildings are located in Seaside OR, Monterey CA, Waikiki HI and Hilo HI. Economic consequences of including tsunami design for mid- to high-rise Risk Category II buildings are discussed.

Résumé :
<p>This study evaluates and compares the expected seismic performance of a high-rise building when designed according to various international building codes. Using a 40-story reinforced concrete (RC) case study building, the comparison among the three most widely used building codes (ACI 318/ASCE 7-10, BS 8110 and EC-2/EC-8) is presented in terms of structural design and seismic performance. The case study building has a dual structural system (moment-resisting frame and shear walls) and is assumed to be located in a highly active seismic region. First, its linear elastic model was created and analysed to perform the code-based design for gravity and seismic loads. The building is designed separately for three codes following their prescribed load combinations, cracked stiffness modifiers and seismic design factors. Then, the detailed performance evaluation of case study building (separately designed for each building code) was carried out using the nonlinear response history analysis (NLRHA) under different input ground motions. Based on obtained results, a comparison of three building codes is presented in terms of the design, seismic performance and economic considerations.</p>

Résumé :
<p>This paper compares the life cycle cost of two commonly used structural systems for buildings: the pre-fabricated steel structural system and the cast-in-situ concrete frame structural system. The case study of the No.2 experimental primary school building, located in Jiyang County in China, is presented as an illustrative example. The building is designed for six stories with 20.1 m in height and 9713.85 m2 construction area, considering 50 years life-span and 7 degrees seismic intensity scale. Ten design solutions are proposed for this case study covering these two types of structural systems, with the combination of different types of interior/exterior walls and slabs. A life cycle cost analysis is performed to evaluate the economic performance among these design alternatives, including the initial cost, construction cost, maintenance cost, removal cost and residual value. The result concludes that the pre-fabricated steel frame structural system has a significant advantage over the cast-in-situ concrete frame structural system from the total life cycle cost perspective.</p>

Résumé :
Abstract The collapse behavior of a 22-story steel building during the September 19, 1985 Mexico earthquake is investigated by studying hysteretic behavior, ductility factors of individual structural components, and overall instability of the building. The hysteresis models for truss-type girders, bracing members, and box columns to be used in the inelastic analysis of this building are developed. A series of inelastic analyses have been performed for the building by using the multicomponent seismic input of actual Mexico City earthquake records. It was found that the structural response exceeds the original design ductility of this building because most girders in the building have suffered large ductilities. Due to the load redistribut-ion effects from the ductile-failed girders, local bucklings developed at many columns on floors 2, 3, and 4. Therefore, most columns on floors 2 through 4 lost their load carrying capacities and rigidities which then caused the building to tilt and rotate. As a result, more columns on floors 5 through 7 developed local buckling and more bracing members buckled. It is believed that ductile failures of girders combined with the local bucklings of columns in the lower part of the building resulted in significant story drift, building tilt, P-A effect, and the failure mechanism.

Talamas Marcos, Miguel Ángel. Preliminary Evidence of Surviving Competition : Neighborhood Shops vs. Convenience Chains. Inter-American Development Bank, septembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004453.

Résumé :
Hundreds of millions of microenterprises in emerging economies face increased competition from the entry and expansion of large firms that offer similar products. This paper studies how one of the worlds most prevalent microenterprises, neighborhood shops, confront competition from convenience chains (e.g., 7-Eleven) in Mexico. To address the endogeneity in time and location of chains store openings, I pair two-way fixed effects with a novel instrument that, at the neighborhood level, shifts the profitability of chains but not of shops. An expansion from zero to the average number of chain stores in a neighborhood reduces the number of shops by 16%. Consistent with the theoretical framework, this reduction is not driven by an increase in shop exit but by a decrease in shop entry. Shops retain their sales of fresh products and 96% of their customers, but customers visit shops less often and spend less on non-fresh and packed goods. I present evidence consistent with shops surviving by exploiting comparative advantages stemming from being small and owner-operated, such as lower agency costs, building relationships with the community, and offering informal credit.
