5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence is widely used for the intraoperative detection of malignant tumors. However, the fluorescence emission profiles of the accompanying necrotic regions of these tumors have yet to be determined. To address this, we performed fluorescence and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of necrotic tissues of squamous cancer after 5-ALA administration. In resected human lymph nodes of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma, we found a fluorescence peak at approximately 620 nm in necrotic lesions, which was distinct from the PpIX fluorescence peak at 635 nm for viable cancer lesions. Necrotic lesions obtained from a subcutaneous xenograft model of human B88 oral squamous cancer also emitted the characteristic fluorescence peak at 620 nm after light irradiation: the fluorescence intensity ratio (620 nm/635 nm) increased with the energy of the irradiation light. HPLC analysis revealed a high content ratio of uroporphyrin I (UPI)/total porphyrins in the necrotic cores of murine tumors, indicating that UPI is responsible for the 620 nm peak. UPI accumulation in necrotic tissues after 5-ALA administration was possibly due to the failure of the heme biosynthetic pathway. Taken together, fluorescence imaging of UPI after 5-ALA administration may be applicable for the evaluation of tumor necrosis.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common cancer in the world, beginning in the cell lining of the colon and rectum. 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a first-line therapy for colorectal cancer patients. However, the response rate of 5-FU in advanced colorectal cancer patients is only 10 - 15 %, and can fail due to drug resistance. Therefore, the development of a new anticancer compound for improving the response rate or for reversing resistance to 5-FU is urgently needed. Oxymatrine is a major component of Sophora flavescens. Recently, many pharmacological effects have been exhibited. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the anticancer activity of oxymatrine, as well as to potentiate the effect of oxymatrine with 5-FU on cell viability, colony-forming, cell migration, cell invasion, and determined MMP-9 protein expression in SW-620 colorectal cancer cells. The results demonstrated that oxymatrine significantly inhibited the cell viability of SW-620 cells after 24, 48, and 72 h treatments. Oxymatrine and 5-FU interaction was synergistically greater in inhibiting the cell survival of SW-620 cells than 5-FU was alone. Oxymatrine also decreased colony formation, cell migration, and cell invasion through reducing the level of MMP-9 protein in SW-620 cells. These first findings elucidated an efficacious anticancer agent, which is derived from natural sources, which could be used to overcome 5-FU resistance in colorectal cancer, and may be beneficial for patients with colorectal cancer who are treated with 5-FU.

The effects were investigated of 254-nm UV radiation on populations of Salmonella typhimurium, aerobes, and molds on the shells of eggs. In the first experiment, the CFU of attached S. typhimurium cells on unwashed clean shell eggs were determined after 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 min of UV treatment (620 μW/cm2) on both ends of the egg. All UV treatments significantly reduced S. typhimurium CFU (P < .01). UVtreatment (620 μW/cm2) in 1-min alternating light and dark cycles for 5 min (three light and two dark) was compared to 0, 3, and 5 min of UV treatment. No significant differences in microbial populations were observed among light and dark cycles and the other UV treatments. In a subsequent experiment, the same UV treatments were utilized to evaluate photoreactivation. After UV exposure, eggs were exposed to 1 h of fluorescent light or I h of darkness or cultured immediately. S. typhimurium CFU were significantly (P < .01) reduced by the UV treatments. However, no significant differences between microbial populations exposed to UV treatment and UV radiation plus photoreactivation were detected. For studies of aerobic bacteria and molds, different UV treatment times (0, 15, and 30 min) at the intensity of 620 μW/cm2 and different intensities (620, 1350, and 1720 μW/cm2) for 15 min were evaluated. Mold CFU per egg were either 0 or 1 for all UV treatments and a 99% reduction of CFU of aerobic bacteria per egg were observed for all UV treatments. It appears from these studies that UV light can significantly reduce populations of S. typhimurium, aerobes, and molds on shell eggs.

Abstract The present study is designed to find out if sesquiterpenes, α-humulene (HUM), valencene (VAL), β-caryphyllene-oxide (CAO) and trans-nerolidol (NER), are able to improve the antiproliferative effect of classical cytostatic drugs, 5-fluorouracil (FU) and oxaliplatin (1,2-diaminocyclohexaneoxalato-platinum, OxPt), in colon cancer cell lines Caco-2 and SW-620. In addition, the possible mechanisms of sesquiterpene action are studied. The results show significant ability of HUM and especially of CAO to enhance the anti-proliferative effects of FU and OxPt in cancer cell lines Caco-2 and SW-620. On the other hand, VAL and NER are ineffective. The action of CAO could be partly based on its ability to disrupt the mitochondrial membrane potential and to activate initiator caspases, but other mechanisms are probably also involved. Based on these results, CAO seems to have the potential for combination therapy of colon cancers and deserves further study.

The FePt films with various thicknesses of 5 to 50 nm are deposited on Si(100) substrate without any underlayer by in-situ annealing at substrate temperature (Ts) of 620°C. A strong (001) texture of L10 FePt film is obtained and presents high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy as the film thickness increases to 30 nm. Further increasing the thickness to above 30 nm, the (111) orientation of L10 FePt is enhanced greatly, indicating that the quality of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy degrades when the FePt film is thicker than 30 nm. The single-layered FePt film with thickness of 30 nm by in-situ depositing at 620°C shows good perpendicular magnetic properties (perpendicular coercivity of 14.0 kOe, saturation magnetization of 473 emu/cm3 and perpendicular squareness of 0.96, respectively), which reveal its significant potential as perpendicular magnetic recording media for high-density recording.

The influence of intravenous (iv) bombesin on multiunit activities recorded from the ventral gastric branch of the vagus was investigated in urethan-anesthetized rats. Consecutive injections of bombesin (0.062, 0.62, 6.2, 62, and 620 pmol iv) decreased dose dependently gastric vagal efferent discharges to 79.8 +/- 4.9, 68.3 +/- 10.2, 47.0 +/- 6.7, 41.6 +/- 4.7, and 36.5 +/- 8.9%, respectively, from preinjection levels. Saline injection had no effect. Bombesin (62 pmol iv) reduced cervical vagal efferent discharges to 25 +/- 6% before and 67 +/- 5% after bilateral cervical vagotomy distal to the recording site. Bombesin (62 and 620 pmol iv) increased gastric vagal afferent discharges by 45 and 93%, respectively. These data show that systemic injection of bombesin potently decreases gastric and cervical vagal efferent activity in part through vagal-dependent mechanisms that may involve the increase in gastric vagal afferent activity.

A new organic-inorganic hybrid structure based on copper (I) iodide staircase chain 1D-Cu2I2(5-chloropyrimidine)2 (1) has been synthesized by a slow-diffusion method. It emits red emission peaking at 620 nm. The internal quantum yield (IQY) measured for this compound is 6.5% under 360 nm excitation. This compound exhibits potential as a non-rare-earth light-emitting phosphor alternative.

To improve the in vivo antidepressant activity of previously reported serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) dual reuptake inhibitors, three series of arylamidine derivatives were designed and synthesized. The in vitro 5-HT and NE reuptake inhibitory activities of these compounds were evaluated, and compound II-5 was identified as the most potent 5-HT (IC50 = 620 nM) and NE (IC50 = 10 nM) dual reuptake inhibitor. Compound II-5 exhibited potent antidepressant activity in the rat tail suspension test and showed an acceptable safety profile in a preliminary acute toxicity test in mice. Our results show that these arylamidine derivatives exhibit potent 5-HT/NE dual reuptake inhibition and should be explored further as antidepressant drug candidates.

In dieser Arbeit werden Berechnungsvorschriften für Insertverbindungen in Holzfurnierlagenverbundwerkstoffen (WVC) mit dem Ziel erstellt, diese zur Auslegung und Nachweisführung in Anwendungen des Maschinenbaus zu verwenden. Nach Definition eines entsprechenden Anforderungsprofils erfolgt eine umfangreiche Darstellung des Standes der Technik. Dabei wird speziell auf die rechnerische Nachweisführung von Verbindungen im Bauwesen eingegangen, schwerpunktmäßig durch die im Eurocode 5 (DIN EN 1995) definierten Modelle für stiftförmige Verbindungsmittel. Im zweiten, praktischen Teil der Arbeit erfolgt die Durchführung und Auswertung umfangreicher Versuche. Dabei werden in einem ersten Schritt wesentliche Materialkennwerte der verwendeten Holzwerkstoffe bestimmt. Die zweite Gruppe der experimentellen Untersuchungen hat das Trag- und Verformungsverhalten vollständiger Insertverbindungen zum Inhalt. Dabei werden die unter statischen Aspekten wichtigen Einflussparameter auf die Tragfähigkeit bei Belastungen in Richtung sowie quer zur Stiftachse bestimmt und geometrische Vorzugsparameter ermittelt. Unter deren Zugrundelegung erfolgt eine Ausweitung der experimentellen Untersuchungen auf dynamische Lastfälle durch eine Ableitung von Wöhlerlinien bei Zugschwellbelastung. Auf Grundlage der durchgeführten Versuche werden Modelle zur Berechnung von Insertverbindungen nach den Methoden des Ingenieurholzbaus abgeleitet. Deren Anwendbarkeit wird an einem konkreten Beispiel in Form einer Transportrollenbahn für die Verwendung in der technischen Intralogistik demonstriert
In this work, calculation fundamentals for insert fastenings in wood veneer composites (WVC) are developed with the aim to use them for the dimensioning and verification in mechanical engineering applications. After defining the functional requirements there is a comprehensive description of the best demonstrated available technology. The arithmetical verifications of connections used in civil engineering are thereby specifically addressed with the main focus on defined models for dowel type fasteners within Eurocode 5 (EN 1995). In the second part of the work comprehensive technical tests are implemented and evaluated. At first essential material properties of the used wood materials are determined. The following experiments contain the load bearing and deformation behavior of complete insert connections. The determination of important influencing parameters of the statical strength under axial and traverse loads is thereby involved, followed by an extension on dynamic load cases by a derivative of Woehler curves (stress - cycle diagram). Based on these experiments are models derived to provide calculation fundamentals to dimension insert connections. The practical applicability of the developed specifications is shown by dimensioning the connections of a roller conveyor made of WVC (technical logistics)

Bumpless interconnects and ultra-thinning of 300 mm wafers for three-dimensional (3D) stacking technology has been studied [1, 2]. In our previous studies, wafer thinning effect using device wafers less than 10 μm was investigated [3, 4]. There was no change for the retention time before and after thinning even at 4 μm in thickness of DRAM wafer [5]. In this study, the behavior of Cu contamination on an ultra-thin Si stacked structure was investigated. Thinned Si wafers were intentionally contaminated with Cu on the backside and 250 °C of heating was carried out during the adhesive bonding and de-bonding processing. An approximately 200 nm thick damaged layer was formed at the backside of the Si wafer after thinning process and Cu particle precipitates ranged at 20 nm were observed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (X-TEM). With secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and EDX analyses, Cu diffusion was not detected in the Si substrate, suggesting that the damaged layer prevents Cu diffusion from the backside.

Powdery mildew is a disease that causes substantial losses in melon production around the world. Obtaining resistant cultivars is possible through introgression of alleles in the breeding program. In this study, it was investigated the inheritance of resistance of AC-02 accession to races 1 and 5 of Podosphaera xanthii in cross with susceptible cultivar ‘Védrantais’, under greenhouses conditions. The segregations ratios for resistance/susceptibility observed in the different populations (F1, F2, RC1 and RC2) indicated a monogenic and dominant inheritance in AC-02 to races 1 and 5. The distance between the gene controlling resistance to race 1 (px1-ac02) and the gene which confers resistance race 5 (px5-ac02) is 28.5 cM.
oídio é uma doença que causa perdas significativas na produção de melão em todo o mundo. A obtenção de cultivares resistentes é feita mediante introgressão de alelos de resistência. Neste estudo, investigou-se a herança da resistência do acesso AC-02 às raças 1 e 5 de Podosphaera xanthii por meio de cruzamento com a cultivar suscetível ‘Védrantais’, sob condições de casa de vegetação. As razões de segregações de resistência/suscetibilidade observadas nas diferentes populações (F1, F2, RC1 e RC2) indicaram que a herança da resistência do AC-02 às raças 1 e 5 é controlada, cada uma por um gene composto por dois alelos, de modo que o alelo que confere resistência domina o alelo para suscetibilidade. A distância entre o gene que controla a resistência à raça 1 (px1-ac02) e o gene que confere resistência à raça 5 (px5-ac02) é 28,5 cM.

Der vorliegende Band 5 &quot;Die flexible S-Bahn: Nutzbarmachung Genetischer Algorithmen für die optimale Steuerung und Planung eines flexiblen Stadtschnellbahnbetriebes&quot; ist methodischen Grundsatzfragen aus dem Teilprojekt AP 200 gewidmet. Zwei Problemkreise werden untersucht: 1) Die vollautomatische Ermittlung flexibler Fahrpläne, durch die eine nachfrageorientierte Optimierung des Beförderungsangebotes ermöglicht wird. 2) Energiekostenminimierende Flexiblilisierung von Fahr-, Halte- und Zugfolgezeiten für ein System von Stadtschnellbahnzügen. Vollständig erschliessen lassen sich dabei die Optimierungspotenziale nur unter den Bedingungen der Vollautomatisierung. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet allerdings besondere Aufmerksamkeit möglichen Zwischenstufen auf dem Weg dahin, d.h. von der heute praktizierten konventionellen Betriebsweise über die Nutzung innovativer Fahrerassistenzsysteme bis zur Vision eines fahrer- und begleiterlosen Betriebsregimes. The problem of national identity in Norway, whose fate was developing especially dramatically, most vigorously declared itself at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. It was in this historical setting that the Norwegian literary critic Just Johan Bing (1866–1954) was born and raised — a famous Norwegian literary critic and archaeologist, as well as the head of the State Archives in Bergen, which contributed to his narrative manner. The article dwells upon “History of Norwegian Literature” (Norsk Litteraturhistorie, 1904), and the textbook of the same name for schoolchildren (Norsk Litteraturhistorie til skolebruk, 1915). Bing tried not only to present the historical facts, but to open the amazing world of the past for readers, make them rejoice together with historical figures in the successes of their compatriots and the greatness of their country and empathize with its tragic events. He made the history of Norwegian literature both informative and exciting to read, and thus contributed to the popularization of the culture of his country.

Abstract In Basic color terms, Brent Berlin and Paul Kay propose that ‘there exist universally for humans eleven basic perceptual color categories, which serve as the psychophysical referents of the eleven or fewer basic color terms in any language’ (1991[1969]: 104). Later research has not invalidated this claim, although their evolutionary ‘encoding sequence’ has subsequently been modified (Fig. 25). The ‘perceptual’ and ‘psychophysical’ component of their theory has been investigated in relation to ethnographic and other materials, and synthesized by Kay and Chad McDaniel (1978: esp. 617 n. 4, 620 n. 5; see further Cole and Scribner 1974: 43–50; Tornay 1978; von Wattenwyl 1979).

Objetivo: Levando em consideração o difícil controle de manejo desta planta daninha e seus prejuízos quando presente em ambiente agrícola, este estudo tem como o avaliar o uso de diferentes herbicidas para o controle Conyza spp, parte deste problema se deve a falhas no manejo, tanto de plantio direto quando no manejo de herbicidas. O experimento foi realizado na safra de verão 2022/2023 no município de Toledo-PR . Tendo como objetivo fazer avaliações de métodos de controle para a Conyza spp. Métodos: O delineamento experimental utilizado no trabalho foi de blocos casualizados, onde os tratamentos foram dispostos através das densidades de Conyza spp. As unidades experimentais tinham dimensões de 3 metros por 10, totalizando 10 metros quadrados. Áreas propositalmente escolhidas com a presença de buva que permaneceram após a colheita do milho. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: : T1 – Glifosato + 2,4-D (1080 + 1002 g ia ha-1); T2 – Glifosato + Triclopir (1080 + 1002 g ia ha-1); T3 – Glifosato + Mesotriona – Atrazina (1080 + 62 – 620 g ia ha-1); T4 – Glifosato + Diclosulan – Halauxifeno-Metílico (1080 + 26 – 5 g ia ha-1). Resultados: De acordo com Oliveira et al. (2013) realizar a associação de herbicidas pré-emergentes e pós-emergentes, juntamente com uma correção de manejo e adequação do sistema de plantio direto de forma correta, junto com a rotação de herbicidas acabam por diminuir aplicações futuras, fazendo a utilização de um que mate a daninha e a outra mantenha ela suprimida. Conclusão: Os tratamentos sequenciais com Gufosinato tiveram um melhor resultado para todos os tratamentos e para todos os períodos, se comparados aos tratamentos com uso de Diquate.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is important due to its recurrence, being the main reason for consultations and with prevalence higher than 25% in Asia and Southeast Europe. The most feared complication of GERD is esophageal adenocarcinoma (ECA), preceded by Barrett's esophagus (EB), defined as the replacement of the stratified squamous epithelium with an abnormal columnar epithelium with intestinal characteristics. The epidemiology still remains unknown due to the low specificity of the symptoms and the lack of consensus on the endoscopic characteristics for its diagnosis. In the dysplastic forms of EB with more chance of progression to ACE, there are few studies and better conducts in relation to dysplastic EB. OBJECTIVE: to clarify controversies about the conduct of dysplastic EB. METHOD: horizontal review, PRISMA method through electronic search in PubMed, between 2018 and 2022, with descriptors: "Barrett's Esophagus" and "Surveillance AND dysplasia AND esophagus" for all age groups. Inclusion: articles in English, with compatible titles and abstracts. We obtained 620 results and after selection 17 articles were included. RESULTS: 13 articles indicate the Seattle Protocol for diagnosis and surveillance; 5, anti-reflux therapy before endoscopy and 12, confirmation of dysplasia by a specialized pathologist. Follow-up low-grade dysplasia (GBD): radiofrequency ablation therapy (ART) and surveillance are feasible in 16 articles, with ART preferred in 8 and surveillance in 4. High-grade dysplasia (DAG) follow-up: endoscopic therapies recommended in 15 articles. Follow-up after dysplastic eradication: periodic and continuous endoscopic surveillance indicated in 9 articles and treatment with proton pump inhibitors in 2 articles. DISCUSSION: Although the Seattle Protocol is recommended for surveillance, it covers a small part of the esophageal mucosa, besides being time-consuming and having low adherence. Controversies persist about the management of BPD, but, in general, ablation is recommended to the detriment of surveillance. There is consensus on endoscopic ablation therapy until complete eradication of DAG. Esophagectomy is not recommended. After eradication, continuous surveillance and proton pump inhibitors. CONCLUSION: Disagreements persist due to discrepancies between studies, especially in low-grade dysplastic EB.

A novel dispersion-free autocorrelator (DFA) has been developed to achieve subfemtosecond temporal resolution. Autocorrelation methods are widely used to measure ultrashort pulses because of their high temporal resolution. However, when the pulse duration is reduced to femtosecond region, pulse broadening by optical components occurs, owing to group velocity dispersion (GVD), and this broadening causes error in pulse-duration measurements. Because GVD depends on spectrum width, shorter pulses increase the broadening effect. To eliminate such pulse broadening, each optical component in the autocorrelators must be ultra thin or dispersion-free. Our novel autocorrelator, which is a noncollinear configuration, consists of a focusing concave mirror, an ultrathin pellicle 5 m beam splitter, corner reflectors, and a 100 m KDP crystal to generate the second harmonic of the laser pulses. Each component causes subfemtosecond time broadening for 10 fs pulses at 620 nm. For example, broadening of a 10 fs pulse due to the pellicle is only 10.0004 fs (negligible) while the KDP crystal broadens the 10 fs pulse to 10.21 fs. Using a colliding-pulse mode-locked (CPM) ring dye laser generating 60 fs pulses at 620 nm, the characteristics of DFA have been investigated by comparing them with an ordinary, noncollinear autocorrelator. Various DFA designs, along with their characteristics and GVD effects, will be discussed in detail.

The objective of this paper is to analyze an existing American Petroleum Institute (API) 620 Tank [10]. The API Tank had failed in the field. The tank is analyzed without reinforcement and with an optimum I-Beam reinforcement. The API Tank is used to store chemicals used in today’s industry. The initial over-all dimensions of the API Tank are determined from the capacity of the stored chemicals. The design function is performed using the ASME Code See VIII Div 1. The API Tank design is broken up into (a) bottom plate, (b) shell section with 9 mm thickness, (c) shell section with 8 mm thickness, (d) shell section with 7 mm thickness, (e) shell section with 6 mm thickness, (f) shell section with 5 mm thickness, (g) top head with 5mm thickness, (h) bolts, and (i) reinforcement ring. The designed dimensions are used to recalculate the stresses for the complete API Tank. The dimensioned API Tank without reinforcement is modeled first using STAAD III finite element software. The stresses from the finite element software are obtained. Next the API Tank with I-Beam reinforcement was modeled using STAAD III finite element software. Ten different I-Beams were considered for the present analysis. The main objective of this paper was to find the optimum I-Beam that resulted in safe reinforced configuration. Optimum I-Beam was considered to be the one that resulted in similar stresses for the beam as well as the tank. This assures elastic matching between the beam and the tank. The design is found to be safe for the I-Beam reinforced configuration considered.

Abstract Model tests have been performed to examine the overtrawlability of Subsea7’s Subsea Production Unit (SPU) in SINTEF Ocean’s Ocean Laboratory in November/December 2017. In this test campaign, 50 tests with different SPU orientations and trawling equipment were carried out. Two trawling water depth (100 m and 500 m) were simulated in the model test. Two types of trawl door, i.e. Thyborøn (5.5t) and Poly Ice (3.8t), with Selstad No. 620 type fishing net were used in present test. Overtrawling with a roller clump (7.6t) was also tested. Two trawling speeds of 1.6 m/s and 2.6 m/s and 5 SPU orientations were examined. Force measurements both on the fishing lines, and directly measured on the SPU were used to determine overtrawlability of the SPU. The dynamometer used in present test to measure the forces directly on the SPU is the first time that this type of measurement has been undertaken at SINTEF Ocean at the Ocean Basin facility with fully modelled trawling gear.

There is currently a need for a stable and widely wavelength tunable femtosecond laser source for time resolved spectroscopic investigations. One approach is to amplify CPM pulses and generate a broad spectral continuum which can be either used directly or reamplified to reach wavelengths other than the fundamental CPM wavelength of 620 nm. Due to the high intensities available with the amplified CPM and continuum, there is potential for parametric mixing in a variety of nonlinear crystals so as to obtain femtosecond pulses in the 1-20 μm wavelength range. We report here preliminary results of the successful mixing of a femtosecond amplified CPM pulse and a femtosecond continuum so as to generate pulses in the mid infrared, at a repetition rate of 8.5 kHz. "Seeded" parametric amplification has been used previously by Jedju and Rothnerg to generate pulses in the 2-5 μm wavelength range using 350 fs pulses at a 10 Hz repetition rate.1

Subpico-second pulses of terahertz electromagnetic radiation are generated by femtosecond optical pulses incident on a large-aperture biased photoconductor. The key advantage of a large-aperture biased photoconductor is the ability to generate high power pulses by increasing the size of the aperture of the photoconductor to accept very high optical energies and high applied bias voltages. This power scaling feature of large-aperture photoconductors has been studied by others using the 8-μJ, 620-nm optical pulses from an amplified CPM laser system. Applied bias fields up to 7 kV/cm were used on semiconductors having 0.5-4 mm electrode gap spacings. We present the results of the generation of terahertz electromagnetic pulses using the amplified 800-nm, 150-μJ, 200-fs optical output from a 5-Hz laser system incident on the biased surfaces of GaAs and InP wafers. Wider gap spacings and larger optical energies permit further investigation into the power scaling and saturation properties of the photoconductors. Our use of 1.5-eV rather than 2-eV photons permits a comparison of results as a function of photon energy.

Introduction: The distribution of the different clinical stages of cancer in the population is of paramount importance not only to assess prognosis and therapy, but mainly to establish public health strategies and priorities. The prevalence of advanced cases in some populations shows the need for public assistance policies aimed at early detection for a rapid reduction in mortality. Unfortunately, reports in Brazil about the different realities of assistance in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) are scarce. Objectives: To evaluate the distribution of the different clinical stages, and the mean 5-year survival of 10,532 breast cancer patients treated by SUS at Pérola Byington Hospital, from January 2011 to December 2016. Methods: A hospital-based observational cross-sectional study was conducted. The population consisted of women with breast cancer treated by SUS at Pérola Byington Hospital. The data were registered in the institution’s data collection system, based on the selection of all women diagnosed with breast cancer in the period from January 2011 to December 2016, and stratified by survival in relation to the initial clinical staging. Results: Our database consists of 620 patients in stage zero (DCIS), 2,479 patients in stage I, 3,998 in stage II, 3,082 in stage III and 353 patients in stage IV. The highest survival rate (98%) was observed in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ. In stage I patients, the 5-year survival rate was 94.7%. This result is slightly higher than that observed in stage II patients, where 90.6% of them had a survival of more than 5 years. In patients belonging to stages IIIA, IIIB and IIIC, the 5-year survival was 83%, 72% and 57%, respectively. Among the patients treated in stage IV, the 5-year survival rate was 55%. Conclusions: Among DCIS, 2% had recurrence and death within 5 years. Survival in patients belonging to stages I and II was 94.7% and 90.6%, respectively, which is very close, according to literature data. The survival of patients belonging to stages IIIA and IIIB exceeded 70%, indirectly showing the efficacy of locoregional and systemic therapy at SUS, which applies to stages IIIC and IV. These reports are unprecedented in the database of the Unified Health System of the Municipality of São Paulo, in a population that undergoes only opportunistic screening.

The femtosecond dynamics of hot carriers injected a few LO phonon energies above the bottom of the conduction band are reported. The onset of carrier screening, carrier relaxation, thermalization of the hot electron gas, and electron–hole recombination are extracted from time-resolved absorption spectra. A CPM ring-dye laser amplified to 2 μJ and 100-fs duration with a copper vapor laser at 7.3 kHz is used to generate a white light continuum probe from an ethylene glycol jet. A 750-μm thick sample of a glass doped with ZnSe is pumped at 620 nm. For a zero pump-probe delay, a well-resolved shift of the absorption edge to lower energies is observed, indicating instantaneous onset of carrier screening. At t = +300 fs, the absorption spectra are dominated by a 75-meV blue shift of the absorption edge, signature of complete carrier relaxation, and filling of the bottom of the band.1 At t = +5 ps the initial recovery of the blue shifted absorption spectra is observed, indicating the onset of electron–hole recombination. The blue shift is almost entirely recovered after 50 ps, with the exception of a small persistent shift which remains for times in excess of several hundred picoseconds. This residual persistent shift is attributed to carriers confined to traps near the bandedge.

A reduced order computational model and imaging experiments are presented as a combined method to investigate migration and trapping of microscale particles within an ultrasonic droplet generator. Use of two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional representations of the three-dimensional (3D) device enables observation of acoustic focusing phenomena that are otherwise visually inaccessible. Our approach establishes relationships between system operating parameters and particle retention due to acoustic radiation forces that arise during atomization of heterogeneous particle suspensions. The droplet generator consists of a piezoelectric transducer for ultrasonic actuation, a resonant fluid-filled chamber, and an array of microscopic pyramidal nozzles. 2D visualization chips were produced through anodic bonding of glass to microfluidic reservoirs deep reactive ion etched in silicon. Open nozzle orifices of the 3D microarray were sealed in its 2D representation to facilitate filling and testing. Finite element analysis was used to model the harmonic response of the 2D assembly from 500 kHz to 2 MHz. The average nozzle tip pressure amplitude across the 2D array was then used to identify operating frequencies that correspond to optimal droplet ejection from the 3D device (ejection modes). The pressure field at these resonant frequencies predicts the equilibrium distribution of polymeric beads suspended in the reservoirs of the 2D chips. To qualitatively assess the accuracy of the model results, visualization experiments were performed at the first three ejection modes of the system (fn1 ≈ 620–680 kHz, fn2 ≈ 1.14 MHz, and fn3 ≈ 1.63 MHz) using 10 μm polystyrene beads. The model demonstrates a remarkable ability to capture the overall shape, as well as specific details of the terminal particle distributions, defined as the state with no further movement toward a pressure node or antinode. Finally, time course trials of acoustic focusing of heterogeneous particle suspensions were used to observe the influence of particle volume on the magnitude of the acoustic radiation force. A mixture of 5 μm and 20 μm diameter polystyrene beads was subjected to a standing acoustic field in the 2D chips. Particle position was recorded at 5 ms intervals until an equilibrium distribution was achieved. As expected, the larger beads focused much more rapidly than smaller beads, acquiring their final positions in seconds (versus 10s of seconds for the 5 μm particles). The method and results reported here serve as building blocks toward translation of an existing ultrasonic droplet generator into a high-throughput particle separation and isolation platform.

A two-phase flow heat transfer experiment platform using alternative refrigerant R134a as working fluid was designed and built to investigate the characteristics of two-phase flow heat transfer. It was primarily made up of circle power, heating/cooling sources, parallel test sections, accumulator and data acquisition system. The working loop was designed for performance pressure of 1.6 MPa and temperature of 200°C, preheated section power of 24 V × 300 A and test section of 60 V × 500 A. The refrigeration chilling unit had a maximum output of 50 kW. The preheated and test section were designed as horizontal helically-coiled tubes, and a visual reservoir made of electric melting-quartz glass was designed to observe flow patterns intuitively. Technology and methods related to fluid and mechanics were discussed in this paper including the aspects of materials and welding, sealing and heat preservation, special machining and accessories installation etc. Pressure testing, heat balance testing, heat transfer characteristics experiments were performed under various conditions to analyze the usability and stability of this platform. Test results showed that the leak ratio was no more than 250 Pa/h at 2.0 MPa and the heat loss of the system wrapped with PEF materials was less than 5%. Under the conditions of pressures of 0.30–0.95 MPa, mass fluxes of 120–620 kg/m2s, inlet qualities of −0.08–0.38 and heated power of 0.45–1.30 kW, R134a two-phase flow boiling heat transfer characteristics were investigated and discussed in detail. This platform can be used for studying the characteristics of two-phase flow pressure drop, boiling heat transfer and fluid-to-fluid modeling technique etc.

The self-preserving properties of round turbulent thermals, puffs, starting plumes and starting jets, in unstratified and uniform crossflow, were investigated experimentally. The experiments involved dye-containing fresh water (for nonbuoyant flows) and salt water (for buoyant flows) sources injected vertically downward into crossflowing fresh water within a water channel. Time-resolved video images of the flows were obtained using CCD cameras. Experimental conditions were as follows: source exit diameters of 3.2 and 6.4 mm, source Reynolds numbers of 2,500–16,000, source/ambient velocity ratios of 4–35, source/ambient density ratios (for buoyant flows) of 1.073 and 1.150, volumes of injected source fluid (for thermals and puffs) comprising 16–318 source diameters, streamwise (vertical) penetration distances of 0–200 source diameters and 0–13 Morton length scales (for buoyant flows) and crosstream (horizontal) penetration distances of 0–620 source diameters. Near-source behavior varied significantly with source properties but the flows generally became turbulent for streamwise distances within 5 source diameters from the source and became self-preserving for streamwise distances from the source greater than 40–50 source diameters. Crosstream motion satisfied the no-slip convection approximation. Streamwise motion for self-preserving conditions satisfied the behavior of corresponding self-preserving flows in still fluids: round thermals and puffs in still fluids for round thermals and puffs in crossflow and two-dimensional line thermals and puffs in still fluids for round starting plumes and jets in crossflow. The no-slip convection approximation for crossflow motion combined with self-preserving approximations for streamwise motion was also effective for predicting flow trajectories at self-preserving conditions for steady round turbulent plumes and jets in crossflow.
