Résumé :
Abstract ATRA combined to anthracycline based chemotherapy is the reference treatment of newly diagnosed APL and a role for maintenance treatment is supported by many studies, but some controversies remain, like the role of AraC. Methods: We performed a joint analysis of pts < 65 yrs included in studies LPA99 (Spanish PETHEMA) and APL 2000 (French -Belgian-Swiss APL group) to address some of those issues. In LPA99, pts received ATRA combined to Idarubicin (IDA) for induction, followed by 3 consolidation courses, 2 with IDA and 1 with mitoxantrone (MTZ, at cumulative dose of 50 mg/m2), and maintenance with intermittent ATRA and continuous 6MP + MTX during 2 years. Pts with high (WBC > 10000/mm3) and intermediate (WBC < 10000/mm3, platelets < 40000/mm3) Sanz score also received ATRA during consolidation courses and higher cumulative dose of IDA (100 mg/m2), vs low risk pts (no consolidation ATRA, cumulative IDA: 80 mg/m2). No AraC was administered in LPA99 trial. For APL 2000, we restricted the analysis to treatment groups that received AraC: pts with low or intermediate Sanz score received induction with ATRA and DNR (60 mg/m2/d x 3) + AraC (200 mg/m2/d x 7) followed by consolidation with a similar course and a final DNR (45 mg/m2/d x 3) + AraC (1 g/m2/12h x 8) course and the same maintenance as in LPA99. High risk patients received the same treatment, but with intrathecal CNS prophylaxis and, in pts < 60 years, AraC 2g/m2/12h x 8 during the last course. Median follow up was 30 and 22 months in LPA99 (412 pts) and APL 2000 (180 pts), respectively. Comparisons were adjusted on age, gender, WBC and platelet counts. Results: In low and intermediate risk patients (308 LPA99 pts, 97 APL 2000 pts), the CR rates, 2 year cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR), EFS and survival were 96% and 99% (p = 0.2), 2.5% and 6.9% (p = 0.05), 93% and 91% (p = 0.6), 95% and 97% (p = 0.3) in LPA99 and APL 2000 trials, respectively. In high risk patients (104 LPA99 pts, 83 APL 2000 pts), the CR rate, 2 year CIR, EFS and survival were 84% and 95% (p = 0.02), 16.0% and 3.3% (p = 0.06), 69.2% and 88.0% (p = 0.01), 82.4% and 91.2% (p = 0.04) in LPA 99 and APL 2000, respectively. Four relapses in high risk pts involved the CNS in LPA99, vs. none in APL 2000. Three and 5 pts in LPA99 and APL 2000 respectively, died in CR, from treatment toxicity. Conclusion: This analysis suggests than in pts with WBC < 10000/mm3, the current PETHEMA approach yields even fewer relapses than a classical ATRA + DNR + AraC regimen, while being less myelosuppressive. This may be due to the anthracyclines used (IDA and MTZ instead of DNR) and/or to the higher cumulative dose of anthracyclines used in LPA99 trial, and possibly also to consolidation ATRA for intermediate risk pts. On the other hand, in pts with high WBC counts, APL 2000 results yielded better EFS and survival and a strong trend for fewer relapses (including relapses involving the CNS), suggesting a beneficial role for AraC, possibly at high dose, in this subset of patients

Résumé :
In the last few decades, the studies in second language acquisition have not answered the question what mechanisms a human’s brain uses to make acquisition of language(s) possible. A neurocognitive model which tries to address SLA from such a perspective was suggested by Ullman (2005; 2015), according to which, “both first and second languages are acquired and processed by well-studied brain systems that are known to subserve particular nonlanguage functions” (Ullman, 2005: 141). The brain systems in question have analogous roles in their language and nonlanguage functions. This article is meant to critically analyse the suggested DP model within the context of neurocognitive studies of L2; and evaluate its contribution to the field of SLA studies. Résumé :
The rapid spread of Corona Virus 2019 known as COVID 19 has brought disturbance to a large number of people’s lives and economic stability. It has greatly challenged the people’s holistic way of life with uncertainties considering the significant public health risks COVID-19 poses. This pandemic has affected the global educational systems which led to delve into advanced teaching-learning tools or modalities that would help bring about the transition from the usual face-to-face mode to flexible learning. The objective of this study was to find out the perception of the respondents on the implementation of Flexible Learning in the delivery of nursing education programs as the basis for the recommended course of actions in the schools of nursing. This is a descriptive-quantitative study, which utilized a self-rated standardized questionnaire—The flexibility questionnaire developed by Bergamin et al., (2012). The questionnaires were purposively administered to a total of sixty-six (66) respondents composed of the deans, coordinators/program heads, and faculty members of selected nursing schools in Metro Manila. The results had shown that the respondents agreed to all indicators mentioned in the survey tool. It has therefore shown in this study that respondents desired an approach to flexible learning in which teaching and learning could exercise regulation and jurisdiction.ReferencesAlly, M. (2004). Résumé :
Résumé :
Abstract In this study we used the yeast Candida guilliermondii FTI 20037 immobilized by entrapment in Ca-alginate beads (2 .5 -3 mm diameter) for xylitol production from concentrated sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate in a repeated batch system. The fermentation runs were carried out in 125- and 250-ml Erlenmeyer flasks placed in an orbital shaker at 30 °C and 200 rpm during 72 h, keeping constant the proportion between work volume and flask total volume. According to the results, cell viability was substantially high (98%) in all fermentative cycles. The values of parameters xylitol yield and volumetric productivity increased significantly with the reutilization of the immobilized biocatalysts. The highest values of xylitol final concentration (11.05 g/1), yield factor (0.47 gig) and volumetric productivity (0.22 g/lh) were obtained in 250-ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing 80 ml of medium plus 20 mi of immobilized biocatalysts. The support used in this study (Ca-alginate) presented stability in the experimental conditions used. The results show that the use of immobilized cells is a promising approach for increasing the xylitol production rates.

Abstract A reliable estimate of peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) mobilization response to granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) may identify donors at risk for poor mobilization and help optimize transplantation approaches. We studied 639 allogeneic PBSC collections performed in 412 white, 75 black, 116 Hispanic, and 36 Asian/Pacific adult donors who were prescribed G-CSF dosed at either 10 or 16 μg/kg per day for 5 days followed by large-volume leukapheresis (LVL). Additional LVL (mean, 11 L) to collect lymphocytes for donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) and other therapies was performed before G-CSF administration in 299 of these donors. Day 5 preapheresis blood CD34+ cell counts after mobilization were significantly lower in whites compared with blacks, Hispanics, and Asian/Pacific donors (79 vs 104, 94, and 101 cells/μL, P < .001). In addition, donors who underwent lymphapheresis before mobilization had higher CD34+ cell counts than donors who did not (94 vs 79 cells/μL, P < .001). In multivariate analysis, higher post–G-CSF CD34+ cell counts were most strongly associated with the total amount of G-CSF received, followed by the pre–G-CSF platelet count, pre–G-CSF mononuclear count, and performance of prior LVL for DLI collection. Age, white ethnicity, and female gender were associated with significantly lower post–G-CSF CD34+ cell counts.

Résumé :
Abstract Event-free survival for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) now exceeds 80% in the most effective trials. Failures are due to relapse, toxicity, and second cancers such as therapy-related myeloid leukemia or myelodysplasia (t-ML). Topoisomerase II inhibitors and alkylators can induce t-ML; additional risk factors for t-ML remain poorly defined. The occurrence of t-ML among children who had received granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) following ALL remission induction therapy prompted us to examine this and other putative risk factors for t-ML in 412 children treated on 2 consecutive ALL protocols from 1991 to 1998. All children received etoposide and anthracyclines, 99 of whom received G-CSF; 284 also received cyclophosphamide, 58 of whom also received cranial irradiation. There were 20 children who developed t-ML at a median of 2.3 years (range, 1.0-6.0 years), including 16 cases of acute myeloid leukemia, 3 myelodysplasia, and 1 chronic myeloid leukemia. Stratifying by protocol, the cumulative incidence functions differed (P = .017) according to the use of G-CSF and irradiation: 6-year cumulative incidence (standard error) of t-ML of 12.3% (5.3%) among the 44 children who received irradiation without G-CSF, 11.0% (3.5%) among the 85 children who received G-CSF but no irradiation, 7.1% (7.2%) among the 14 children who received irradiation plus G-CSF, and 2.7% (1.3%) among the 269 children who received neither irradiation nor G-CSF. Even when children receiving irradiation were excluded, the incidence was still higher in those receiving G-CSF (P = .019). In the setting of intensive antileukemic therapy, short-term use of G-CSF may increase the risk of t-ML.

Résumé :
In 1998&ndash;2000 the effect of fertilization on the quantity, stratification of root phytomass and yields of dry mass on mesophyte meadow stands was studied. The root dry matter in the soil depth of 0.0&ndash;0.25 m was oscillated and the extreme values in individual samplings were found in 1998 (402&ndash;702 g/m2). In 1999 and 2000 the oscillating minimum and maximum values of dry root phytomass in all were 418&ndash;622 g/m2, 423&ndash;678 g/m2,respectively. The mean values of dry root mass in unfertilized treatments ranged from 484 to 540 g/m2. PK increased the values insubstantially (507&ndash;565 g/m2). The higher nitrogen dose (200 kg/ha) decreased predominantly the total quantity of dry root phytomass by 36&ndash;102% was found in the control treatments, compared in the yield of dry harvestable above-ground mass. In the systematic P40K100 fertilization the root weight in slightly moistenyears (1998 and 2000) was by 18&ndash;70% higher in comparison with the dry year 1999 when the root mass was 24% less. In the fertilization 200 kg/ha N(+PK) in the first two years of studies the root phytomass was less by 12% and 38% compared with the yield of the dry meadow fodder. The mean representation of root phytomass in the soil layer 0.0&ndash;0.1 m was in 1999&ndash;2000 in the control and PK treatments nearly the same, and created 88% from the total quantity. N(+PK) fertilization caused the displacement of the root phytomass towards the surface.

Résumé :
Angkak (red mold rice, red yeast rice, Chinese red rice), a traditional Chinese functional food is produced by solid-state fermentation of cooked non-glutinous rice with <i>Monascus</i> species. The secondary metabolite of <i>Monascus</i> species, monacolin K (lovastatin), has been proved to lower blood lipid levels. In this study, the best <i>Monascus purpureus</i> strain was selected from MTCC 369, 410, 1090 based on lovastatin concentration. Four medium parameters (NH4Cl, MgSO4, NaCl, CaCl2) screened by Plackett-Burman design from total nine medium variables were optimised by Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology. Maximum lovastatin production of 3.420 mg/g was predicted in the solid medium containing 20 g rice and 40 ml liquid nutrient (NH4Cl 14.32 g/l, MgSO4 0.76 g/l, NaCl 14.65 g/l, and CaCl2 0.54 g/l) by the point prediction tool of Design Expert Ver. 7.1 software at 14th day of fermentation.

Résumé :
In this study, we have used the one-pot polycondensation method to prepare novel 2D conjugated microporous polymers (Th-F-CMP) containing thiophene (Th) and fluorene (Fl) moieties through the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) data revealed that Th-F-CMP (Td10 = 418 °C, char yield: 53 wt%). Based on BET analyses, the Th-F-CMP sample displayed a BET specific surface area of 30 m2 g−1, and the pore size was 2.61 nm. Next, to show the effectiveness of our study, we utilized Th-F-CMP as a fluorescence probe for the selective detection of Fe3+ ions at neutral pH with a linear range from 2.0 to 25.0 nM (R2 = 0.9349). Furthermore, the electrochemical experimental studies showed that the Th-F-CMP framework had a superior specific capacity of 84.7 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and outstanding capacitance retention (88%) over 2000 cycles.

Résumé :
The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between the season of birth and the birth weight and length of Bulgarian newborns. The weight and length data of 6517 (6098 full-term and 419 preterm) live births in 2000–2001 were collected from the birth registry of II Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynaecology “Sheynovo”, Sofia, Bulgaria. Statistical analyses were done using the SPSS 16 software for Windows: descriptive statistics; the t-test (p<0.05); One-Way ANOVA, (Tukey, HSD-test, p<0.05) and the Pearson’s correlation. The sunshine dura-tion data for 2000 and 2001 were collected at the Sofia Meteorological Station. The mean weight of Bulgarian neonates born in 2000-2001 was 3389.8 g in boys and 3261.8 g in girls. The average newborn’s length was 51.0 cm and 50.3 cm in boys and girls, respectively. In all seasons, significant gender differences were observed with a priority for boys (p≤0.001). The winter period was identified with a peak in birth length for both sexes, and spring and summer were the seasons with the lowest values for boys and girls, respectively. A significant positive correlation between birth length and the daily amount of sunshine during the prenatal period was found (p<0.001). Seasonal fluctuations influenced weight and length in Bulgarian neonates. The results obtained in this study can be useful in prenatal diagnostics, neonatal care, and health prevention of pregnant women and neonates.

Résumé :
A flexible strategy is to exploit encapsulating Si nanoparticles into N-doping carbon film (Si-NC) that can effectively localize the Si nanoparticles, thereby solving the problem of serious volume change during cycling as well as facilitating the fast diffusion of Li[Formula: see text], and thus achieving improved anode performance. A maximum capacity of 883.1[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] at the current density of 100[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] after 50 charge and discharge processes is achieved for Si-NC. Even at a large current density of 2000[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text], a specific capacity of 415[Formula: see text]mAh[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] is maintained. Moreover, the charge capacity can still almost recover the initial capacity as the current density is reverted to 100[Formula: see text]mA[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text], indicating that Si-NC has a superior rate performance in lithium storage. This facile synthesis route provides a new perspective to produce Si/C composite at a low cost and large scale with good electrochemical performance.

Résumé :
The test of the isotropy in the angular distribution of the gamma-ray bursts collected in BATSE Catalog (Meegan C. A. et al. 2000) is a test of cosmological principle itself, because the gamma-ray bursts are at cosmological distances. Several articles of the authors study this question (Balázs L. G., Mészáros A., & Horváth I., Astron. Astrophys., 339, 1, 1998; Balázs L. G., Mészáros A., Horváth I., & Vavrek R., Astron. Astrophys. Suppl., 138, 417, 1999; Mészáros A., Bagoly Z., & Vavrek R. Astron. Astrophys., 354, 1, 2000; Mészáros A., Bagoly Z., Horváth I., Balázs L.G. & Vavrek R. Astrophys. J., 539, 98, 2000). The final conclusion concerning the validity of isotropy is complicated both by instrumental effects and by the fact that there are three subgroups of gamma-ray bursts (“short”, “intermediate”, “long”; separation is done with respect to the duration of bursts). The long bursts are surely up to z ⋍ 4 (z is the redshift); for the remaining two subclasses the redshifts are unknown. The done tests of isotropy suggest (after the elimination of instrumental effects) the existence of anisotropy for the intermediate subclass on the confidence level > 95%. On the other hand, for the remaining two subclasses the situation is unclear; there is no unambiguous rejection of isotropy for them yet on the higher than 95% confidence level. If the bursts of intermediate subclass are at high z-s (say, at z > 0.1), then the validity of cosmological principle would be in serious doubt.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT To identify potential cellular regulators of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (NS5B), we searched for cellular proteins interacting with NS5B protein by yeast two-hybrid screening of a human hepatocyte cDNA library. We identified a ubiquitin-like protein, hPLIC1 (for human homolog 1 of protein linking intergrin-associated protein and cytoskeleton), which is expressed in the liver (M. F. Kleijnen, A. H. Shih, P. Zhou, S. Kumar, R. E. Soccio, N. L. Kedersha, G. Gill, and P. M. Howley, Mol. Cell 6: 409-419, 2000). In vitro binding assays and in vivo coimmunoprecipitation studies confirmed the interaction between hPLIC1 and NS5B, which occurred through the ubiquitin-associated domain at the C terminus of the hPLIC1 protein. As hPLICs have been shown to physically associate with two E3 ubiquitin protein ligases as well as proteasomes (Kleijnen et al., Mol. Cell 6: 409-419, 2000), we investigated whether the stability and posttranslational modification of NS5B were affected by hPLIC1. A pulse-chase labeling experiment revealed that overexpression of hPLIC1, but not the mutant lacking the NS5B-binding domain, significantly shortened the half-life of NS5B and enhanced the polyubiquitination of NS5B. Furthermore, in Huh7 cells that express an HCV subgenomic replicon, the amounts of both NS5B and the replicon RNA were reduced by overexpression of hPLIC1. Thus, hPLIC1 may be a regulator of HCV RNA replication through interaction with NS5B.

Résumé :
Five cultivars of leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa) – Bergamo, Dubáček, Frisby, Lollo Rossa and Redin – were evaluated in two-year experiments carried out at the Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice (Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno). Experiments were conducted in two trial years, 1998 and 1999; the lettuce was cultivated in three seasons: spring, summer and autumn. After the harvest, contents of following nutrients were evaluated: vitamin C, minerals (K, Na, Ca, Mg), fibre, dry matter and nitrates. The weight of leaf rosette was also recorded. The contents of selected substances and weights of leaf rosette were ranged as follows: vitamin C (65 to 302 mg/kg), potassium (2,394 to 6,477 mg/kg), sodium (39 to 223 mg/kg), calcium (200 to 755 mg/kg), magnesium (110 to 413 mg/kg), fibre (4.98 to 12.22 g/kg), dry matter (59 to 140 g/kg), nitrates (293 to 3,817 mg/kg) and the weight of leaf rosette (164 to 502 g). A significant influence of cultivar was found in the case of K, Na, and Ca content, as well as in dry matter and weight of leaf rosette. The growing season affected significantly all the evaluated substances, except for fibre. The year of cultivation affected all the evaluated parameters but Ca. It appears from the results that the contents of monitored substances were significantly influenced by cultivar as well as by growing season and year.

Résumé :
This study examines psycholinguistic structure of autobiographical and traumatic narratives representing positive emotional and stressful traumatic life events. The research applied the cross sectional, between subjects design utilizing the independent variables of external agent they, space and time and dependent variable of word number in traumatic narratives for multiple regression analysis. The approval letter to recruit the participants through SONA system in 2015–2016 academic year was obtained from Institutional Review Board of Oklahoma State University (USA). 64 undergraduates of nonclinical setting, females (n=37), males (n=27), mean age was 19.43 (SD=1.37) were recruited. PTSD-8: A Short PTSD Inventory assesses PTSD, the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) analyzes traumatic and autobiographical narratives in terms of linguistic units and psychological meaningful categories. The results indicate that there are significant differences between pronoun they as external agent of proposition and psychological categories of negative emotions and anxiety in traumatic and autobiographical narratives. The frequency of these categories is higher in traumatic narratives compared with autobiographical narratives. External agent they, category of time and space taken together significantly contribute to word number in traumatic narrative. There is a negative correlation between focus on the past and word count, and positive correlation between social category and word count in traumatic narrative in nonclinical sample. To sum up, propositional structure of traumatic memory of individuals without PTSD is represented by external agent and context (place and time) taken together. Considering time as a significant negative predictor of creating traumatic narrative, temporal processing without overestimation of time is an important factor of avoiding PTSD. The principal theoretical implication of this study is that traumatic memory might be examined through psycholinguistic markers represented by propositional structures and psychological meaningful categories of traumatic narratives in individuals from nonclinical and clinical settings. Résumé :
AbstractTo determine how weaning date affected productivity in deer farming systems, calf growth rate, hind conception date, and hind condition were monitored on 10 New Zealand deer farms located in Otago and Southland, from February/March until August/September in 1999 (no. = 551 hind-calf pairs) and 2000 (no. = 414 pairs). On each farm, in both years, half of the hind-calf pairs were separated for early weaning (mean date 11 March; range 25 February to 17 March), while the other half remained together for late weaning (mean date 28 May; range 12 May to 10 June). Deer in both treatments on each farm were of similar age and genotype and stags were added to hind groups on the same day in March. Calves were weighed in February/March, May/June and August/September. Scanning of hinds to determine date of conception was carried out in June.Climatically the 2 years were very different with a summer drought preceding observations in 1999, nevertheless similar effects of weaning date were observed in both years. Calves weaned early gained less weight than the late-weaned calves (142 v. 210 g/day in 1999, and 131 v. 166 g/day in 2000) between February/March and May/June (P < 0·001). However mean conception dates were earlier in the early-weaned hinds compared with the late-weaned hinds (by 12 days in 1999 and 7 days in 2000,P < 0·001). Hind condition scores in May/June were higher for the early-weaned hinds compared with the late-weaned hinds (by 0·5 score units in 1999 and 0·3 score units in 2000, P < 0·001). For all measures the effects of weaning date varied between farms (P < 0·001). It was concluded that farmers weaning early could expect a positive effect on hind conception date and winter hind condition and a negative effect on calf growth rate, but management could override negative effects of weaning early or late.

Résumé :
Abstract Background: Prognosis of AML is influenced by different clinical and molecular alterations. We performed a multivariate analysis including five molecular markers NPM1, FLT-ITD, CEBPA, FLT-TKD and MLL-PTD combined with clinical parameters at initial diagnosis to refine risk stratification. Patients and methods: Prognostic impact of clinical and molecular parameters in respect to OS, EFS, RFS and CR was assessed in 803 patients with normal karyotype included in the AMLCG (German AML Cooperative Group) 2000 trial until 01/2006. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment with TAD (thioguanine, conventional-dose AraC, daunorubicin) followed by HAM (high-dose AraC, mitoxantrone) or with the double-induction regimen consisting of two courses of HAM (quotation Buechner JCO 2006). Patient age ranged from 17 to 85 years (median: 60 yrs). 51% of patients were male, 49% female. 81% of patients had de novo AML. Performance status was normal or slightly impaired in the majority of patients (71% ECOG 0/1). Median blood counts at diagnosis were: Hb: 9.2 g/dl (4.2–16.4 g/dl); WBC: 16.0 G/l (0.1–798.2 G/l); platelets: 58 G/l (0.02–643 G/l), LDH: 410 U/l (8–14332 U/l) and bone marrow (BM) blasts: 80% (6–100%). Molecular markers’ mutation status and all mentioned clinical parameters were included in univariate analyses. In multivariate analyses only univariate significant parameters were used. Results: In 560 patients with all five molecular markers analyzed by routine molecular techniques at diagnosis the frequency of mutations were the following: 52.7% NPM1+, 29.3% FLT3-ITD+, 6.1% FLT3-TKD+, 7.5% MLL-PTD+ and 7.5% CEBPA+. The majority of analyzed patients (44.1%) showed one single mutation only. About one quarter of patients displayed either none (27.5%) or two (26.2%) mutations. A minority of 2.1% had 3 mutations, whereas the combination of four or all five molecular alterations was not found. The most frequent single mutation was NPM1 (28.4%), followed by FLT3-ITD (5.4%), CEBPA (4.8%), MLL-PTD (4.6%) and FLT3-TKD (0.9%). The combination of FLT3-ITD and NPM1 was detected in 18.8% of patients. Complete remission (CR) rate was 65.1%. Median overall survival (OS), event-free survival (EFS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) were 19.3, 7.7 and 17.2 months. Multivariate analyses identified the following parameters to have significant impact on prognosis. OS: NPM1, FLT3-ITD, WBC, age (p<0.0001 each) and CEBPA (p=0.003); EFS/RFS: NPM1, FLT3-ITD and age (p<0.0001 each / p<0.0001 each) and LDH (p=0.020 / p=0.040); CR: NPM1 and age (p=0.001 each). Conclusions: Our data show in a large cohort of 560 patients that at least one molecular marker can be identified in 72.5% of patients with NK-AML. The NPM1 mutation and age are the only parameters with an independent impact on all outcome parameters (OS, EFS, RFS, CR). These data provide the basis for a prognostic model in NK-AML that can be used for risk stratification and selection of patients that will benefit from allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Résumé :
Abstract Background: ATRA combined to anthracycline based chemotherapy (CT) is the reference treatment of newly diagnosed APL. ATRA has also demonstrated a role during maintenance treatment in randomized studies (Fenaux, Blood 99; Talmann, NEJM 1997), and may even be useful during consolidation courses (Sanz, Blood, 2008, although this was not a randomized study). During induction treatment, the optimal duration of ATRA treatment, however, is unknown. We tried to assess this point using long-term results of APL 93 and APL 2000 trials, conducted by the European APL group in newly diagnosed APL between 1993 and 2004. Methods: APL 93 and 2000 trials combined ATRA plus 3 courses of daunorubicin (DNR) based CT and included a total of 902 pts with different randomizations (for date of introduction of CT, use or not of AraC and of maintenance treatment). Only treatment arms that proved “optimal” (ie with early addition of the first course of CT to ATRA, AraC in combination to DNR for the 3 CT courses, and combined maintenance with intermittent ATRA and low dose continuous CT) (Fenaux, Leukemia 2000;Ades JCO 2006) and adult pts who had achieved CR in those arms, ie 414 pts, were considered for this analysis of the influence of duration of ATRA during induction treatment on the cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR) and survival. Per protocol, ATRA (45 mg/m2/d, rounded to a daily dose of 8 pills of 10 mg per day, ie 80 mg/day in most pts) was to be administered “until CR”, and to be transiently discontinued only in case of severe ATRA syndrome. No dose reduction was allowed except in children, who were therefore excluded from this analysis. Results: In the 414 pts, who Included 263 (64%) pts with WBC &lt; 10G/L and 151(36%) pts with WBC &gt;10G/L, the median cumulative dose of ATRA administered during Induction treatment was 2160 mg (corresponding to 27 days at 80 mg/d) Early ATRA Interruptions, Ie before recovery from aplasia and patient discharge, were made almost exclusively for ATRA syndrome or unexplained fever, and were followed or not by restart of the drug. Final discontinuation of ATRA for induction treatment was made a median of 27 days after onset of ATRA treatment. Although both trials stated that ATRA should be continued “until CR”, ATRA discontinuation was more often made at the end of the period of aplasia and patient discharge, than at the time of documented CR on bone marrow examination, especially as marrow abnormal promyelocytes are known to disappear slowly in APL. No difference in 5 y CIR or survival were found in pts who had received more or less than 2160 mg of ATRA during induction in the whole population and in pts with baseline WBC less or greater than 10 G/L. 89/414 (21%) pts had received less than 1500 mg of ATRA during Induction (corresponding to less than 19 days at 80 mg/day), their 5 y CIR and survival were similar to those of pts who had received more than 1500 mg of ATRA during induction in the whole population, and in pts with baseline WBC &gt; 10 G/L. However, in pts with baseline WBC &lt;10G/L (263 pts), the 5 year CIR, and survival were 31.3% and 12.5% (p = 0.04) and 81.1% and 95.3% (p = 0.022), in patients who had received less and more than 1500 mg of ATRA during induction treatment, respectively. Differences persisted after adjustment on other prognostic factors of relapse Identified in our previous studies, including gender, baseline platelet count, circulating blasts and fibrinogen level and on the clinical trial (APL 93 vs APL 2000). Conclusion: Although ATRA duration for induction treatment was not randomized in APL 93 and 2000 trials, our results suggest that, in newly diagnosed APL pts with WBC &lt; 10 G/L, short duration of ATRA during induction treatment may be associated with a higher risk of relapse. This, along with Spanish PETHEMA results supporting a possible role for ATRA during consolidation courses, suggests that sufficiently prolonged exposure to ATRA during the first months of treatment (and not only during maintenance) may be important for disease cure in APL.

Résumé :
Purpose:The effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion on prerace hydration status and on 2000 m ergometer performance in elite lightweight rowers was examined using a randomized, cross-over, double-blinded design. Methods:To simulate body mass (BM) management strategies common to lightweight rowing, oarsmen reduced BM by approx. 4% in the 24 h preceding the trials, and, in the 2 h before performance, undertook nutritional recovery consisting of mean 43.2 kJ/kg, 2.2 g of CHO per kilogram, 31.8 mg of Na+per kilogram, 24.3 mL of H2O per kilogram, and NaHCO3(0.3 g of NaHCO3per kilogram BM) or placebo (PL; 0.15 g of corn flour per kilogram BM) at 70 to 90 min before racing. Results:At 25 min before performance, NaHCO3had increased blood pH (7.48 ± 0.02 vs PL: 7.41 ± 0.03,P= .005) and bicarbonate concentrations (29.1 ± 1.8 vs PL: 23.9 ± 1.6 mmol/L,P< .001), whereas BM, urine specific gravity, and plasma volume changes were similar between trials. Rowing ergometer times were similar between trials (NaHCO3: 397.8 ± 12.6; PL: 398.6 ± 13.8 s,P= .417), whereas posttest bicarbonate (11.6 ± 2.3 vs 9.4 ± 1.8 mmol/L,P= .003) and lactate concentration increases (13.4 ± 1.7 vs 11.9 ± 1.9 mmol/L,P= .001) were greater with NaHCO3.Conclusion:Sodium bicarbonate did not further enhance rehydration or performance in lightweight rowers when undertaking recommended post-weigh-in nutritional recovery strategies.

Physicochemical properties were assessed for the fruit of 16 saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt.) cultivars harvested in 1998–2000 from replicated trials at two sites (Saskatoon and Moonlake, SK). The cultivars included Bluff, Buffalo, Elizabeth (at Saskatoon only), Forestburg, Honeywood, JB30, Martin, Nelson, Northline, PAR 90, Parkhill, Pearson II, Pembina, Smoky, Success, and Thiessen. Fruit weight and total solids, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, anthocyanin content, and colour characteristics of the fruit juice extracts were measured. Fruit of Martin, Thiessen and PAR 90 had the highest fruit weights (mean = 1.63 g), and Success and Bluff the lowest (mean = 0.79 g). Total and soluble solids contents ranged among cultivars from 19.9% and 14.0 °Brix, respectively, for JB30, to 27.9% and 20.1 °Brix, respectively, for Pembina. Fruit pH ranged from 3.65 for Nelson to 4.18 for Parkhill and Smoky. Fruit of Nelson had a titratable acidity (0.63%) that was approximately twice that of Success, Pearson II, Forestburg, Honeywood, Smoky and Parkhill. The soluble solids to titratable acidity ratio (SS/TA) differed greatly among cultivars ranging from 27 for JB30 to 55 for Parkhill. The colour characteristics of the fruit juice extracts differed among cultivars in chroma and L values, but not in hue angle. Anthocyanin analysis by HPLC identified four peaks: cyanidin-3-galactoside, cyanidin-3- glucoside and two unknowns. Total fruit anthocyanin content ranged from 414 µg g-1 for Forestburg to 852 µg g-1 for Nelson. Correlations were found between anthocyanin content and fruit pH, titratable acidity, hue angle and L value. Key words: Amelanchier alnifolia, saskatoon, fruit composition, acidity, anthocyanin content

Résumé :
Objective: To provide real-world data and summarize current clinical evidence on the efficacy and safety of sirolimus in active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods: This was a prospective real-world clinical study. Included SLE patients should have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) ⩾ 2. They were treated with sirolimus and followed up regularly. The SLEDAI-2K, Physician Global Assessment (PGA), serological activity indices, and remission of organ manifestations were evaluated. We also performed a meta-analysis to integrate current evidence of sirolimus in SLE. Results: A total of 49 patients were included in the final analysis. After treatment, the SLEDAI-2K (6.2 ± 3.1 versus 4.0 ± 3.4, p = 0.001) decreased significantly, and the prednisone dosage was tapered successfully (9.9 ± 8.8 mg/day versus 5.9 ± 4.0 mg/day, p = 0.002). Serological activity indices also improved [complement 3 (C3): 0.690 ± 0.209 g/l versus 0.884 ± 0.219 g/l, p < 0.001; complement 4: 0.105 ± 0.059 g/l versus 0.141 ± 0.069 g/l, p < 0.001; anti-dsDNA antibody, 200 ± 178 IU/ml versus 156 ± 163 IU/ml, p = 0.022]. The remission proportions of arthritis, skin rash, and thrombocytopenia were 100%, 88.8%, and 46.2%, respectively. A total of 41.2% of lupus nephritis (LN) patients achieved renal remission, but the average 24-h urine protein level was not significantly changed. Meta-analysis enrolled five studies with 149 patients included, and revealed similar results regarding the changes of SLEDAI-2K [−3.5 (−5.0, −2.1)], C3 [0.224 (0.136, 0.311) g/l] and daily dosage of prednisone [−12.7 (−19.9, −5.6) mg/day]. Conclusion: Sirolimus might be effective and tolerated in SLE. The role of sirolimus in LN requires further study.

Résumé :
Abstract: To ensure the seismic effectiveness of highrise buildings different systems of lateral restraints are provided e.g., bracings, shear walls, core walls etc. In the present study, deflection of various joints, storeys & also the drifts have been gone through. For this purpose, 3 different models of multi-storeyed buildings were prepared consisting of a G+6 building with shear wall at the centre of edges on exterior walls, G+6 building with a core wall & G+8 building with a core wall were prepared using an integrated building designing software known as ETABS- 2016 (student version). A 3-bay building was modelled using M30 concrete mix and reinforcing steel bars of HYSD 415 for beams, columns, slabs as well as shear walls. After this pier labels were assigned to the shear walls. A variety of load cases like joint loads, dead loads, live loads, wind load in x-direction for terrain category 4, earthquake loads in x & y directions for zone II along with their combinations were assigned. The respective diaphragms were assigned to the three models & analysis was carried out at the end. The table of results was obtained and the deflection analysis was carried out to compare the relative effectiveness of shear walls & core walls at different locations of the multi-storeyed building. The codes taken into consideration during the progress of work were IS 456:2000 for plain and reinforced concrete, IS 875:2015 (Part 1) for wind loads & IS 1893:2002 for earthquake loads. Keywords: Earthquakes, Shear wall, Core wall, Lateral deflection.

Résumé :
This study presents the influence of rainfall and human perturbation on physical and chemical weathering rates, and carbon and nutrient yields in the basin of the Kaoping, a small mountainous river (SMR) in southwestern Taiwan. The study was derived principally from the spatial and temporal variability of aquatic geochemistry in the river during wet (1999–2000) and drought (2002) periods. The total, physical, and chemical weathering rates in the river basin ranged respectively from 4739, 3601, and 1138 g m−2 year−1 in the wet period to 1072, 656, and 416 g m−2 year−1 in the drought period, resulting mainly from a large difference in rainfall and river discharge between the two periods. The wet and drought periods were likely associated with La Niña and El Niño events, respectively. The weathering rates of the wet period were much higher than those reported from the world’s river basins, showing the unique characteristics of the SMR. The total carbon yield was derived mainly from dissolved inorganic carbon and was much higher in the wet period (140 g C m−2 year−1) than in the drought period (53.7 g C m−2 year−1). Taking silicate weathering (54.7 ± 10.2%) slightly over carbonate weathering (48.6 ± 9.5%) in determining dissolved ion loads, the Kaoping catchment may currently consume 0.155–0.298 MtC/year atmospheric CO2 without considering the CO2 released from chemical weathering. The nutrient yields were controlled mainly by human inputs but also enhanced by increased rainfall. Both regional and local climatic conditions and human impacts likely determined the weathering rates and total yields of carbon and nutrients. The SMRs may collectively contribute significantly to global fluxes of terrestrial sediments, geochemical matters, carbon, and nutrients to oceans.
