Within the last ten years two surveys have attempted to summarise and categorise the major interpretations. John Whyte's Interpreting Northern Ireland covered the 1970s and 1980s and came to the conclusion that traditional Unionist and nationalist interpretations, with their emphasis on external, that is British and Irish, forces as the cause for the problem, had begun to lose out to ‘internal conflict’ interpretations. He felt, however, that this approach, too, was coming to the end of its usefulness, and he expected the emergence of a new paradigm shortly.

The effect of early turnout on pasture quality and weight gain by beef cattle was assessed with 32 Hereford feeder cattle which were turned out on pasture on four separate dates in each of 2 yr in a randomized complete block design with two replications. In 1998, steers were allocated to four treatments numbered consecutively T1 to T4 according to turnout date: 6 May [110 growing degree days above 5°C (GDD)], 13 May (152 GDD), 20 May (195 GDD) and 27 May (255 GDD). Steers grazed separate 0.4-ha paddocks continuously for 28 d. In 1999, turnout dates were 11 May (124 GDD), 18 May (156 GDD), 26 May (226 GDD) and 2 June (304 GDD), with 0.6, 0.5, 0.4 and 0.3 ha of pasture allocated to each treatment (two steers, two heifers), respectively. Soil resistance to penetration, sward height, herbage mass and chemical composition, and animal liveweight gain were recorded. Early turnout did not increase soil compaction. Herbage mass at turnout for T1 to T4 was 532, 780, 1370 and 1299 kg dry matter (DM) ha-1, respectively, in 1998, and 901, 983, 1324 and 1719 kg ha-1, respectively, in 1999. Herbage mass increased by 273 kg ha-1per week as turnout was delayed in 1998 and 256 kg ha-1in 1999. Crude protein concentration declined from approximately 200 g kg-1 DM at T1 to less than 175 g kg-1 DM at T4 in both years. Fibre concentration, as indicated by ADF and NDF, increased 1 wk after turnout. Forage quality declined as turnout was delayed, but grazing did not improve forage quality relative to ungrazed swards. In 1998, cattle in T1 to T4 lost 4.7, 4.0, 1.2 and 4.2% of BW, respectively, in the week after turnout, whereas in 1999, T1 to T4 lost 1.2, 4, 0.5 and 1.5% of BW, respectively. In 1998 over the 28-d period, steers in T1 and T2 lost 0.52 and 0.21 kg d-1, respectively, whereas steers in T3 and T4 gained 0.60 and 0.51 kg d-1. In 1999, over the 28-d period, cattle in T1 to T4 gained 1.1, 0.64, 1.1 and 0.61 kg d-1, respectively, with cattle in T1 gaining significantly more weight (P < 0.014) than those in T4. The results suggest a weight gain of 0.5 to 1.0 kg d-1 can be achieved in a 28 day grazing period with early turnout on native pasture provided herbage mass ranges between 900 and 1300 kg DM ha-1 and approximately 130 kg forage DM head-1 is initially on offer. ABSTRACT A total of 24,591 nonhuman salmonella strains isolated in Germany between 1986 and 1998 were examined for their resistance to nalidixic acid by an agar diffusion method. The rate of resistance (inhibition zone, ≤13 mm) ranged from 0.2% in 1986 to a peak of 14.8% in 1990. Between 1991 and 1998 the MICs for nalidixic acid-resistant strains ranged from more than 256 μg/ml for nalidixic acid to between 0.25 and 128 μg/ml for enrofloxacin. In the early 1990s a particularly high incidence of fluoroquinolone resistance (49.5%) was seen among isolates of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (Salmonella Typhimurium) definitive phage type 204c that mainly originated from cattle. Among isolates from poultry an increase in the incidence of nalidixic acid resistance to a peak of 14.4% was observed in 1994. This peak was due to the presence of specific resistant serotypes, mainly serotypes Hadar, Saintpaul, Paratyphi B (d-tartrate positive; formerly serotype Java) and Newport. Such strains exhibited a decreased susceptibility to enrofloxacin (MIC, 1 μg/ml). Among isolates from pigs the peak incidence of resistance was reached in 1993, with 7.5% of isolates resistant to nalidixic acid and enrofloxacin. The study demonstrates an increase in the incidence of strains that are resistant to nalidixic acid and that have decreased susceptibility to enrofloxacin after the licensing of enrofloxacin. In addition, the number of other serotypes that exhibited nalidixic acid resistance or reduced enrofloxacin susceptibility increased among the total number of isolates investigated between 1992 and 1998.

ABSTRACT Replication of the RNA genomes of tombusviruses, which are small plus-sense RNA viruses of plants, may be regulated by cis-acting elements, including promoters and replication enhancers that are present in the RNA templates. Using a partially purified RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) preparation (P. D. Nagy and J. Pogany, Virology 276:279-288, 2000), we demonstrate that the minus-strand templates of tombusviruses contain a replication enhancer, which can upregulate RNA synthesis initiating from the minimal plus-strand initiation promoter by 10- to 20-fold in an in vitro assay. Dissection of the sequence of the replication enhancer element revealed that the two stem-loop structures present within the ∼80-nucleotide-long enhancer region have interchangeable roles in upregulating RNA synthesis. The single-stranded sequence located between the two stem-loops also plays an important role in stimulation of RNA synthesis. We also demonstrate that one of the two hairpins, both of which are similar to the hairpin of the minus-strand initiation promoter, can function as a promoter in vitro in the presence of short cytidylate-containing initiation sites. Overall, the in vitro data presented are consistent with previous in vivo results (D. Ray and K. A. White, Virology 256:162-171, 1999) and they firmly establish the presence of a replication enhancer on the minus-stranded RNA of tombusviruses.

ABSTRACT Defective interfering (DI) RNAs of Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV), a plus-sense RNA virus, comprise four conserved noncontiguous regions (I through IV) derived from the viral genome. Region III, a 70-nucleotide-long sequence corresponding to a genomic segment located 378 nucleotides upstream of the 3′ terminus of the genome, has been found to enhance DI RNA accumulation by approximately 10-fold in an orientation-independent manner (D. Ray and K. A. White, Virology 256:162-171, 1999). In this study, a more detailed structure-function analysis of region III was conducted. RNA secondary-structure analyses indicated that region III contains stem-loop structures in both plus and minus strands. Through deletion analyses of a DI RNA, a primary determinant of region III activity was mapped to the 5′-proximal 35-nucleotide segment. Compensatory-type mutational analyses showed that a stem-loop structure in the minus strand of this subregion was required for enhanced DI RNA replication. The same stem-loop structure was also found to function in a position-independent manner in a DI RNA (albeit at reduced levels) and to be important for efficient accumulation within the context of the TBSV genome. Taken together, these observations suggest that the 5′-proximal segment of region III is a modular RNA replication element that functions primarily through the formation of an RNA hairpin structure in the minus strand.

Particular emphasis is placed on interdependence of infrastructure capacity and overall operational readiness of the system «railway» in terms of compliance with criteria adopted in the theory of reliability. An own interpretation of the concept of «operational safety» and factors of maintenance of track in working order is given, as well as regularity in local situations, preventive and remedial actions are suggested. These celebrations are part of local revitalization movements of Indian culture and identity stretching from the French departement of Guadeloupe in the Windward Islands to Trinidad and Guyana in the south. Political changes have mirrored the cultural revival in the region. While the debate so often in the past centered on the legitimacy of East Indian claims to local nationality in these societies where African or Creole cultures dominate, in the 1990s leaders of Indian descent were elected heads of government in the two Caribbean nations with the most populous East Indian communities: Cheddi Jagan as President of Guyana in October 1992 (after a 28-year hiatus) and Basdeo Panday as Prime Minister of Trinidad in November 1995. Diplodia pinea is a latent, opportunistic pathogen of Pinus and other coniferous species, including Pseudotsuga menziesii (3). The fungus causes twig blight, branch cankers, tree and seedling collar rot, root rot, and can also infect cones (1). D. pinea has often been reported causing tip and shoot blight on various Pinus spp. in different parts of Turkey. During disease surveys on Pinus spp. carried out in May 2012 in Izmit in the Marmara Region (37°36′54″N, 31°20′00″E), typical shoot blight symptoms of D. pinea infection were also observed on the neighboring P. menziesii trees. Shoots and cones of P. menziesii were investigated for the presence of D. pinea pycnidia. Pycnidia from cones and shoots were placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 23°C. Three isolates were obtained from shoot and cone samples. Identification of the pathogen was based on morphological characteristics of the conidia and by PCR of the ITS region of nuclear rDNA. Colonies on PDA were woolly, whitish at first turning black, sometimes partly or entirely turning light gray. Micromorphological characteristics of the Diplodia isolates were similar to those described in (2): conidia width 18.4 μm (SD ± 2.8) (range 11 to 22 μm) × length 34.0 μm (SD ± 5.3) (range 20 to 41 μm) (n = 100). Conidia were at first hyaline, later becoming brown to dark brown, oblong ellipsoid, bicellular with a distinct septum. To confirm the identity of the isolates, genomic DNA was extracted and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA was amplified using primers ITS1 and ITS4 (4). Amplicons were 483 bp in length (GenBank Accession No. KF372874) and shared 98% nucleotide identity with HM100285.1 and 97% nucleotide identity with JX981458.1 of D. pinea. Inoculation tests were performed on 2-year-old P. menziesii seedlings by placing mycelial plugs of three isolates obtained from pycnidia on the main stem after wounding with a cork borer. Control seedlings were inoculated with PDA plugs without mycelium. All seedlings were incubated at 24°C for 3 weeks in a climate chamber. Following incubation, the seedlings displayed dark brown-to-black discoloration, measuring on average 10.7 ± 0.6 cm, of the bark and wood tissues around the inoculation points on the stems. The pathogen was successfully re-isolated from symptomatic stem tissues, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. menziesii as a host of D. pinea in Turkey. P. menziesii is not endemic to Turkey and to date has a limited distribution (approximately 140 ha), but it is an important fast growing tree species for new industrial plantations. RESUMENEl estudio histórico de la religiosidad islámica se ha encontrado tradicionalmente con el problema de la escasez de fuentes. Además, siempre se ha estudiado a partir de las fuentes islámicas, obviando las cristianas. Si es cierto que para la Edad Media las fuentes cristianas no ofrecen demasiada información y están además viciadas por su carácter polémico, también lo es que para la Edad Moderna, con el surgimiento de un tipo de literatura sobre el islam que está alejado de la tradición polémica, disponemos de un buen número de importantes fuentes cristianas que merecen ser tenidas en cuenta en cualquier análisis histórico de la religiosidad islámica. Es el caso especialmente de la Topographía e Historia general de Argel (1612), cuyas descripciones y observaciones resultan de una riqueza sin precedentes.PALABRAS CLAVE: Edad Moderna, cinco pilares del islam, religiosidad, España, Argel.ABSTRACTTraditionally, the historical study of Islamic religiosity has been faced with the problem of the scant amount of sources. Moreover, it has always been approached on the basis of Islamic sources, disregarding the Christian ones. If for the Middle Ages Christian sources do not present much information about the subject and this is tainted by its polemical character, for the Early Modern Age, with the emergence of a new kind of literature about Islam that does not belong to the polemical tradition, we have at our disposal a good number of sources of information. This is particularly thecase of the Topographía e Historia general de Argel (1612), with descriptions and observations of an unprecedented quality. AbstractIn Nova Scotia, the whitemarked tussock moth, Orgyia leucostigma Fitch, periodically erupts in outbreaks that typically last 3–5 years. Population changes during a recent outbreak were monitored by means of aerial defoliation surveys and fall egg-mass surveys that were conducted between 1997 and 2001. Severe defoliation was first recorded on approximately 250 ha in 1996. The defoliated area increased rapidly to hundreds of thousands hectares in 1998, after which it sharply declined to about 4700 ha in 2000 and 0 ha in 2001. The total infested area [>0.01 egg masses per three branches of Abies balsamea L. (Pinaceae)] decreased from about 1.4 million ha in 1997 to about 13 500 ha in 2001. Between 1996 and 2001, the infestation involved a cumulative total of 2.4 million ha, covering most of the province. The collapse of larval populations during 1998 was associated with widespread prevalence of a singly embedded nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) and Entomophaga aulicae (Reichardt in Bail) Humber (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales). Sampling of larval populations in late July and August 1998 revealed a widespread and virtually sympatric occurrence of those pathogens in areas that were under defoliation pressure, with infection levels by each pathogen exceeding 75% in many sample sites. Pathogen impacts on larval survival were studied in 1999 in a persisting pocket of severe infestation in Hants County. Larvae were collected every 3 d from balsam fir branch samples between 17 June and 21 July and reared to determine cause of death. The two pathogens together accounted for at least 50% of cohort mortality, calculated as marginal mortality rates according to Royama (2001). Although cohort mortality due to disease on balsam fir was significantly correlated with between-generation reduction in mean egg-mass density, overall pathogen-induced mortality was not high enough to drive the populations into an endemic state, and a moderate infestation persisted into 2000.

Breeder rice seeds from Burkina Faso harvesteds in 1999 were tested for Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae. This pathogen affects rice, maize, sorghum, and other Gramineae. Ten samples of 200 seeds in each sample were tested by the cassette holder method for detection of this bacterium (1). Seedlings were evaluated for symptom development after 14 days at 27 to 30°C and 100% relative humidity under fluorescent light (12 h photoperiod). Bacterial stripe symptoms were observed in seedlings raised from 9 of 10 seed samples tested, and incidence ranged from 5 to 20%. Diseased seedlings showed water-soaked areas on coleoptiles and brown stripes on leaf sheaths and mid-ribs. Twenty-six strains obtained from diseased seedlings were characterized using several criteria. Colonies were small, whitish-grey, raised, entire and translucent on nutrient agar and cream-tan, raised, entire, and did not produce fluorescent pigment on King's medium B. They were Gram negative, oxidase positive and nitrate positive. Variable reactions were recorded for starch hydrolysis; 22 strains reacted positively and 4 negatively. All 26 strains reacted positively in ELISA performed with antiserum against A. avenae subsp. avenae. Results using Biolog GN MicroPlates (Biolog Inc., Hayward, CA computer identification system, Release 4.0) showed all strains to be A. avenae subsp. avenae (sim. 0.709 to 0.802). Hypersensitive reactions on leaves of 2-month-old tobacco plants infiltrated with bacterial suspensions were recorded within 24 h. Strains were tested for pathogenicity by injecting stems of 21-day-old rice plants with bacterial suspensions (approximately 108 CFU/ml). Inoculated seedlings were incubated for 4 to 7 days under humid conditions at 28°C. Inoculated rice plants showed brown stripes and non-inoculated control seedlings remained symptomless. Based on biochemical, serological, and biological characteristics, strains were identified as A. avenae subsp. avenae. This is the first report of A. avenae subsp. avenae, causal agent of bacterial stripe of rice, in Burkina Faso. The common presence of A. avenae subsp. avenae in breeder rice seeds emphasizes the need for control measures to limit further spread to unaffected rice-growing areas and other cereal crops. We recently completed two-color CCD photometry of resolved stars in 11 dwarf irregular galaxies (Hopp & Schulte-Ladbeck, 1995, A&AS 111, 527), selected because of their relative isolation from massive galaxies in the Kran-Korteweg – Tammann sample (1979, AN 300, 181). The B-R color magnitude diagrams (CMD) show that all galaxies studied had star formation activity in the last ∼ 108 yr. Several of them continue to form stars, the most active being UGC 5272 A (see Hopp & Schulte-Ladbeck, 1991, A&A 248, 1) while others, like DDO 210 (Hopp & Schulte-Ladbeck, 1994, ESO Conf. Workshop Proc. 49, 511), are pausing in their star formation activity. The CMDs enable us to select the brightest blue supergiants in these galaxies and to estimate their distances, D. Our values agree with the estimates based on the Virgo inflow model of Kran-Korteweg (1986, A&AS 66, 255) at the 30%-level. Prelimanary values are given in the table below.

У статті досліджується актоіллокутивний потенціал англійського побутового дискурсу виправдання шляхом зіставлення іллокутивних характеристик частотних у дискурсі виправдання мовленнєвих актів. Спираючись на змодельовані конструкти змісту виправдання, дифенсивну інтенцію мовця визначено передумовою породження дискурсу виправдання. У результаті вивчення наявних у науковій літературі класифікацій мовленнєвих актів визначено, що домінантна іллокутивна сила дискурсу виправдання включає складові інформування та переконування, що типово представлено констативом та асертивом. Власне мовленнєвий акт виправдання визначено як кредитив з включеною перлокуцією винесення виправдального вердикту, яким регулюється міжсуб’єктна взаємодія. Література References Вендлер З. Abstract We have investigated the electron transfer kinetics for reduction of plastoquinone by photo­ system II in six mutant strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii by following the decay of the high fluorescence state after flash activation, and compared the separate reactions of the two-electron gate with those of a wild type strain. By analysis of the electron transfer kinetics, and separate measurement of the equilibrium constant for stabilization of the bound semiquinone after one flash, we have been able to deconvolute the contributions of rate constants and equilibrium constants for plastoquinone binding and electron transfer to the overall process. Two mutations, S 264 A and A 251 V, led to a marked slowing of kinetics for reduction of plastoquinone to the bound semiquinone. In S 264 A , the second electron transfer was also slower, but was normal in A 251 V. In mutant G 256 D , the electron transfer kinetics were normal after the first flash, but slowed after the second. In mutants L 257 F , V 219 I, and F 255 Y , the electron transfer kinetics after both flashes were similar to those in wild type. We discuss the results in terms of a model which provides a description of the mechanism of the two-electron gate in terms of measured kinetic and equilibrium constants, and we give values for these parameters in all strains tested.

Выполнено сравнение отклика локальных популяций березы повислой (Betula pendula) на факторы среды по двум морфометрическим индексам: флуктуирующей асимметрии (ФА) и ксероморфизма (ИК) листьев. Показано, что изменения значений исследованных индексов практически не зависят от концентрации тяжелых металлов (ТМ) в тканях листа и существенно обусловлены действием экзогенных факторов. Особенно сильна зависимость ФА и ИК от уровня суммарного загрязнения почв ТМ, в частности свинцом и цинком. Биоиндикационная карта г. Саранска и его окрестностей свидетельствует, что 75% исследованной территории принадлежит к третьей категории качества среды – с ощутимым антропогенным прессом на растения. Неблагоприятное воздействие факторов среды заметно снижено в крупных зеленых зонах (~18% территории). Зоны сильного воздействия (четвертая категория качества среды) занимают менее 6% исследованной территории. Study of petrological and geochemical characteristics of mantle peridotite xenoliths in Pliocene alkaline basalt in Nghia Dan (West Nghe An) was carried out. Rock-forming clinopyroxenes, the major trace element containers, were separated from the xenoliths to analyze for major, trace element and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions. The data were interpreted for source geochemical characteristics and geodynamic processes of the lithospheric mantle beneath the region. The peridotite xenoliths being mostly spinel-lherzolites in composition, are residual entities having been produced following partial melting events of ultramafic rocks in the asthenosphere. They are depleted in trace element abundance and Sr-Nd isotopic composition. Some are even more depleted as compared to mid-ocean ridge mantle xenoliths. Modelled calculation based on trace element abundances and their corresponding solid/liquid distribution coefficients showed that the Nghia Dan mantle xenoliths may be produced of melting degrees from 8 to 12%. Applying various methods for two-pyroxene temperature- pressure estimates, the Nghia Dan mantle xenoliths show ranges of crystallization temperature and pressure, respectively, of 1010-1044°C and 13-14.2 kbar, roughly about 43km. A geotherm constructed for the mantle xenoliths showed a higher geothermal gradient as compared to that of in the western Highlands (Vietnam) and a conductive model, implying a thermal perturbation under the region. The calculated Sm-Nd model ages for the clinopyroxenes yielded 127 and 122 Ma. Cedars (Cedrus deodara (Roxb.) G. Don) are well known as evergreen ornamental trees widely used in horticulture in temperate climates. In March 2013, dieback symptoms were found on cedar trees in different locations (including the campus of Nanyang Normal University) in Nanyang (33°01′ N, 112°29′ E), a southwestern city of Henan Province, China. Characteristic symptoms included needle discoloration and defoliation, canker formation and gummosis on trunks and branches, browning and tissue necrosis under the bark as well as dieback of branches/trunks. Of 873 cedar trees investigated, 139 (16%) were symptomatic. A total of 21 Diplodia sp. isolates were obtained from 102 tissue pieces randomly sampled from the lesion margins of 31 affected trees with a conventional method for isolation of culturable fungal species from plant tissues. Monohyphal cultures were isolated from actively growing edges of colonies to purify the isolates. The purified isolates were grown on 2% water agar with sterilized stems of Foeniculum vulgare to induce their colonies to form pycnidia (4). Unmatured conidia were hyaline, aseptate, and turned light to dark brown with maturity. Mature conidia were aseptate (rarely uniseptate), ovoid with truncated or rounded base and obtuse apex, externally smooth, roughened on the inner surface, and 8 to 11 × 23 to 26 μm (n = 50). These morphological characteristics of the isolates agreed with those of Diplodia seriata (the anamorph of Botryosphaeria obtusa) (5). The rDNA-ITS sequences of two representative isolates (xs-01 and xs-06) were amplified with primers ITS1 and ITS4. PCR products were purified and ligated with PMD-19T vector for sequencing. The rDNA-ITS sequences were submitted to GenBank with accession nos. KJ463386 and KJ549774 for isolates xs-01 and xs-06, respectively, showing 100% identity with multiple isolates of D. seriata (HQ660463, KC461297, and KF535906). Koch's postulates were fulfilled in greenhouse tests on 2-year-old cedar plantlets inoculated by the two isolates. Ten plantlets were used for the inoculation tests for each of the isolates, and their trunks were wounded to a 2 mm depth with a sterilized cork borer (3 mm diameter). The wounds were inoculated by mycelial plugs cut from 7-day-old colonies grown on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates and wrapped with Parafilm, and those inoculated with pure PDA plugs served as control. Inoculated plantlets were incubated in a greenhouse with alternating cycles of 14 h fluorescent light/10 h darkness under moist conditions for 30 to 60 days at 28°C. Nine of 20 inoculated plantlets developed needle discoloration and shoot blight symptoms similar to those observed on naturally infected cedar trees. The control plantlets remained symptomless during the incubation period. D. seriata cultures were constantly recovered from each diseased plantlet, indicating that the isolated D. seriata isolates were responsible for the disease. D. seriata has been reported as a phytopathogen causing dieback diseases worldwide on multiple woody plant species such as olive (4), mulberry (1), Pinus spp., and Picea glauca (2,3). It changes course occasionally, leaving behind bayous of stagnant argument, while it carves out new lines of inquiry and debate. The books under review here follow the meandering course of this great river of historical writing. There are two scholarly editions of the writings of Civil War soldiers, one northern one southern, one black one white. There are two reference works, each of them bearing the rather idiosyncratic stamp of its editor. The immensely detailed battlefield narrative, as exemplified by John Michael Priest's book on South Mountain, adheres to a tradition of Civil War historical writing that resists changing historiographical fashions, and continues to appeal to a readership which knows the kind of military history it likes, and simply wants still more of it. Another honoured tradition in Civil War literature is the reprint of a “classic” written by someone who lived through the conflict, and Alexander McClure has good claims to inclusion in this category. Finally, there are two quite brief books by two heavyweight historians, James McPherson and Gary Gallagher, who address some of the perennial Civil War issues, such as why did men fight and go on fighting, and which is more in need of explanation: why did the Confederacy lose, or how did it manage to fight for so long?

A method for the surface reconstruction of 3D tubular branched structures characterized by low informative point clouds (i.e., 2.5D) is proposed. These specific clouds can arise when using photogrammetry techniques on complex subjects in challenging scanning environments (e.g., underwater gorgonian coral at mesophotic depths). The core idea behind the proposed Sphere Skeleton Approach (SSA) is to approximate the assumed tubular shapes via merged spheres having variable radii and centered in the points of the medial skeleton. To assess the generality and robustness of the proposed SSA, additional experiments have been conducted on 2.5D point clouds that were synthetically generated from 3D model benchmarks. Hausdorff distances between the target and the reconstructed 3D models are used to quantitatively compare the SSA performances to a classical meshing algorithm. Two Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) successions, Lung Cam in Vietnam, and Lukač in Slovenia, have been sampled for high-resolution magnetic susceptibility, stable isotope and elemental chemistry, and biostratigraphic analyses. These successions are located on the eastern (Lung Cam section) and western margins (Lukač section) of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean during PTB time. Lung Cam, lying along the eastern margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean provides an excellent proxy for correlation back to the GSSP and out to other Paleo-Tethyan successions. This proxy is tested herein by correlating the Lung Cam section in Vietnam to the Lukač section in Slovenia, which was deposited along the western margin of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean during the PTB interval. It is shown herein that both the Lung Cam and Lukač sections can be correlated and exhibit similar characteristics through the PTB interval. Using time-series analysis of magnetic susceptibility data, high-resolution ages are obtained for both successions, thus allowing relative ages, relative to the PTB age at ~252 Ma, to be assigned. Evaluation of climate variability along the western and eastern margins of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean through the PTB interval, using d18O values indicates generally cooler climate in the west, below the PTB, changing to generally warmer climates above the boundary. A unique Black Carbon layer (elemental carbon present by agglutinated foraminifers in their test) below the boundary exhibits colder temperatures in the eastern and warmer temperatures in the western Paleo-Tethys Ocean.ReferencesBalsam W., Arimoto R., Ji J., Shen Z, 2007. Исследована адсорбция аниона серина на гладком Pt и Pt(Pt)-электроде. Методом кривых заряжения получены стационарные и кинетические изотермы адсорбции. Установлено, что как на гладком, так и Pt(Pt)-электроде, кинетика исследуемых процессов подчиняется уравнению Рогинского-Зельдовича, а стационарное заполнение описывается изотермой Темкина. При этом адсорбция аниона серина на Pt(Pt) сопровождается диссоциацией адсорбата. Найдены основные термодинамические характеристики (константа адсорбционного и изменение свободной энергии Гиббса) процесса адсорбции аниона серина на обоих электродах. During reading, readers never fixate on all words in the text; shorter words sometimes gain zero fixation and skipped by the reader. Relying on E-Z Reader Model, this research hypothesized that a similar skipping effect also exists for a second language. The current study examined word skipping rates in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) with 75 EFL learners by using eye tracking methodology. The results showed that word skipping was affected by EFL reading proficiency significantly and articles (a, an, the) were skipped more than content words. Furthermore, more skilled learners were observed to have less fixation count and skipped more words during reading while less skilled learners employed more fixations and skipped less words. The study aims to assess the rate of erosion that occurred in Manjunto Watershed and financial loss using Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing. Model used to determine the erosion is E30 models. The basis for the development of this model is to integrate with the slope of the slope between NDVI. The value of NDVI obtained from satellite imagery. Slope factor obtained through the DEM processing. To determine the amount of economic losses caused by erosion used the shadow prices. The amount of nutrients lost converted to fertilizer price. The results showed that the eroded catchment area has increased significantly. The rate of average annual erosion in the watershed Manjunto in 2000 amounted to 3 Mg ha-1 yr-1. The average erosion rate in the watershed Manjunto annual increase to 27 Mg ha-1 yr-1 in the year 2009. Economic losses due to erosion in 2009 was Rp200,000,- for one hectare. Total losses due to erosion for the total watershed area is Rp15,918,213,133, -. Subsequently, it was found to be the vertebrate homologue of the Drosophila segment polarity gene product Armadillo (McCrea, P. D., C. W. Turck, and B. Gumbiner. 1991. Science [Wash. DC]. 254:1359-1361; Peifer, M., and E. Wieschaus. 1990. Cell. 63:1167-1178). Also, antibody perturbation experiments implicated beta-catenin in axial patterning of the early Xenopus embryo (McCrea, P. D., W. M. Brieher, and B. M. Gumbiner. 1993. J. Cell Biol. 123:477-484). Here we report that overexpression of beta-catenin in the ventral side of the early Xenopus embryo, by injection of synthetic beta-catenin mRNA, induces the formation of a complete secondary body axis. Furthermore, an analysis of beta-catenin deletion constructs demonstrates that the internal armadillo repeat region is both necessary and sufficient to induce axis duplication. This region interacts with C-cadherin and with the APC tumor suppressor protein, but not with alpha-catenin, that requires the amino-terminal region of beta-catenin to bind to the complex. Since alpha-catenin is required for cadherin-mediated adhesion, the armadillo repeat region alone probably cannot promote cell adhesion, making it unlikely that beta-catenin induces axis duplication by increasing cell adhesion. We propose, rather, that beta-catenin acts in this circumstance as an intracellular signaling molecule. Subcellular fractionation demonstrated that all of the beta-catenin constructs that contain the armadillo repeat domain were present in both the soluble cytosolic and the membrane fraction. Immunofluorescence staining confirmed the plasma membrane and cytoplasmic localization of the constructs containing the armadillo repeat region, but revealed that they also accumulate in the nucleus, especially the construct containing only the armadillo repeat domain. These findings and the beta-catenin protein interaction data offer several intriguing possibilities for the site of action or the protein targets of beta-catenin signaling activity.

Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, causing late blight on potatoes and considered to be a typical airborne disease, was found to be infective also by oospores in the soil. P. infestans is heterothallic, and is known to reproduce asexually in Sweden since only one mating type, A1, was present until 1986. Since the 1970s, the other mating type, A2, of P. infestans has migrated to most parts of the world from its original location in central Mexico (2). When A1 and A2 meet, they may form oospores, which are thick-walled, resting structures, giving the pathogen a possibility to recombine as well as survive without its host, for instance in the soil. The soil stages of the pathogen are now therefore under intense investigation. Oospores of P. infestans were produced from two Scandinavian A1 and A2 isolates in Rye A broth mixed with talcum powder and dried for 7 weeks. The inoculum was mixed with sterile, standardized soil in concentrations of 10, 150, 250, and 400 oospores per ml of soil. Cv. Bintje plants cultivated in vitro from nodal cuttings on Murashige and Skoog medium were transplanted to the soil after rooting. Brown discolorations were obtained on the underground stems and tubers on potato plants grown in the two highest concentrations of oospores for 1 month at 15°C and 16-h day length. After 3 days of incubation on P. infestans-selective medium (3), sporangia covered the tissue from plants grown in 250 and 400 oospores per ml of soil and the pathogen was reisolated. This shows that germinating oospores of P. infestans can infect underground stems and tubers of potatoes in soil and further explains the early attack of late blight as observed in a potato crop in Sweden 1996 and 1997 (1). El texto aborda la evolución del análisis historiográfico que se ha llevado a cabo sobre la Cataluña moderna entre finales del siglo XVI y principios del XVIII. Aunque la frontera moderna de Cataluña puede ser múltiple, nos centramos esencialmente en aquella que va desde el Valle de Arán hasta el Mediterráneo. El texto abre con una primera reflexión sobre el camino hacia el cambio de modelo, luego evoca los efectos de las guerras con Francia, con algunos ejemplos concretos, como el de Cerdaña, y, por último, expone la realidad percibida y llevada a cabo con la nueva “fortificación” de la frontera catalana a finales del siglo XVII, cuando el control de Francia se hace evidente. The Drosophila notum, the dorsal body wall of the thorax, is subdivided genetically into longitudinal domains (Calleja, M., Moreno, E., Pelaz, S. and Morata, G. (1996) Science 274, 252–255). Two homeobox genes clustered in the iroquois complex, araucan and caupolican, regulate proneural genes and are required for development of sensory bristles in the lateral notum (Gomez-Skarmeta, J. L., del Corral, R. D., de la Calle-Mustienes, E., Ferres-Marco, D. and Modolell, J. (1996) Cell 85, 95–105). An iroquois-related homeobox gene, mirror, was recently isolated and is localized close to the iroquois complex region (McNeil, H., Yang, C.-H., Brodsky, M., Ungos, J. and Simon, M. A. (1997) Genes and Development 11, 1073–1082; this study). We show that mirror is required for the formation of the alula and a subset of sensory bristles in the lateral domain of the notum. Genetic analysis suggests that mirror and the other iroquois genes interact to form the alula as well as the sensory organs. Based on similarities between mirror and the iroquois genes in their genetic map positions, expression, protein structure and function, mirror is considered a new member of the iroquois complex and is involved in prepatterning sensory precursor cells in the lateral notum.

Анотація Національна ідентичність, з одного боку, є однією з фундаментальних ідентичностей, тобто, вона може служити орієнтиром для людини навіть тоді, коли інші (професійні, родинні, класові) швидко змінюються внаслідок трансформації суспільства. З іншого боку, зміни суспільства, його соціальних інститутів (як агентів впливу) змінюють зміст і форми національної ідентичності членів суспільства. Відтак усталення тієї чи іншої моделі ідентичності здійснюється в певному соціальному контексті, який задає не тільки спектр альтернатив, але й набір різних комеморативних практик. У статті обґрунтовується взаємообумовленість смислоконституювання пам’яттєвого та ідентичнісного дискурсів, із урахуванням того, що пам’яттєвий дискурс, з одного боку, віддзеркалює характерні риси національної ідентичності, а з іншого – формує своєрідну смислову основу останньої, моделює її, впливаючи на зміни з різним ступенем інтенсивності. In the year 1993 a confined and unused harbour basin was used to store 290,000 m3 of fine-grained dredged material from Hamburg harbour. About 70% of the deposit surface was water covered. The edge areas were above the water table and covered with reed. Emissions of dissolved compounds into the groundwater, as well as surface gas emissions were measured from 1994 to 1996. As indicators for water fluxes from the deposit we used NH4+ and HCO3− because of their high concentrations in mud porewater in comparison to groundwater. The average concentrations of NH4+ and HCO3− in the porewater increased during 2 years from 85 to 250 mg NH4+ 1−1 and from 2.0 to 3.1 g HCO3− 1−1, while the groundwater samples showed constant values of 8 mg NH4+ 1−1 and 0.7 g HCO3− 1−1. Furthermore, the average gas emissions over the water surface were 3.2 g CH4 m−2 d−1 and 0.8 g CO2 m−2 d−1. In contrast, no methane and 3.0 g CO2 m−2 d−1 were emitted from land areas. The results indicated, that there were no significant emissions of mud porewater compounds into the groundwater but high CH4-emissions over the water covered surface of the mud deposit.

Field studies were conducted at Goiânia, GO, Brazil, on an Oxisol (clayey, kaolinitic, isothermic, Typic Haplustox) and at Jussara, GO, Brazil, on an Oxisol (loamy sand, kaolinitic, isothermic, Typic Haplustox) during 1995 and 1996 to determine the carryover effect of fomesafen, imazamox, and acifluorfen, applied to edible bean, on rotational crops (maize, sorghum, rice, and millet) and to estimate the level of soil residues under Brazilian Savanna conditions. Averaged across locale, year, and rate, fomesafen dissipation time (DT50) (37.5 d) was longer than acifluorfen (27.5 d) and imazamox (25.9 d). For both locations, soil herbicide persistence (average of herbicides) was longer in 1995 than in 1996. This was due to higher soil moisture content in 1996. The sensitivity of rotational crops to fomesafen and imazamox residues was, in decreasing order: sorghum, corn, millet, and rice, and for acifluorfen: sorghum, corn, rice, and millet. The period between herbicide application and rotational crop planting (PAP) varied in agreement with the sensitivity of rotational crops to herbicide residues in soil and the persistence of the herbicide. Considering both location and year, the PAP for fomesafen (250 g ai ha−1) ranged from 69 to 132 d for corn, 114 to 179 d for sorghum, 29 to 95 d for rice, and 52 to 111 d for millet; the PAP for imazamox (40 g ai ha−1) ranged from 68 to 111 d for corn, 78 to 139 d for sorghum, 25 to 75 d for rice, and 40 to 102 d for millet; and the PAP for acifluorfen (170 g ai ha−1) ranged from 56 to 89 d for corn, 96 to 139 d for sorghum, 61 to 95 d for rice, and 43 to 82 d for millet.

Хроматография активно развивается и используется для научных исследований уже более100 лет. Тема хроматографической лексики имеет важное значение для различных разделов химии(особенно для физической и аналитической химии). Хроматография применяется во всем мире в научных исследованиях, в различных отраслях промышленности, в медицине, в фармацевтике, в криминалистике, для контроля окружающей среды и т.д. Универсальным языком межкультурной коммуникации, языком мировых научных публикаций, языком научного мира (т.н. «лингва франка») является английский. С целью анализа хроматографической языковой картины мира в статье была изучена частота использования основных англоязычных хроматографических терминов и понятий, используемых в англоязычных статьях, по теме «хроматография». Метод статистической обработки основан на подсчете количества терминов, используемых в статьях. Была проведена обработка статистических данных, взятых из международной реферативной базы данных «Web of Science Core Collection». Было дано описание хроматографической терминосистемы и ядерных терминов. Терминологическая система – это упорядоченное множество терминов с отношениями внутри системы. Любая термино-система является основой для составления словарей или для работы переводчика. Была предложена научная картина мира, которая отражает ядро языкового сознания хроматографиста как ученого и исследователя. Смысл слова или термина создает семантическую сеть, которая является основой языкового сознания. Научная картина мира хроматографиста отражена в хроматографическом словаре. Другими словами, исследуемые термины и понятия позволяют виртуально «сконструировать» научную картину мира хроматографиста, которая отражает (ментальный) лексикон и языковое сознание хроматографиста. Ядерная (центральная) и периферическая лексика науки позволяет хроматографисту оперировать необходимыми терминами и понятиями. Описание лексики демонстрирует структуру науки хроматографии. Научная картина мира выглядит, как сложная многослойная модель. Ядро лингвистического сознания отражает объективный опыт хроматографистов, тогда как периферические термины касаются субъективного научного опыта. Термины общего языка – «mass», «analysis», «determination», например, отражают широкие философские аспекты научной деятельности хроматографиста. Нами был рассмотрен также такой аспект, как частота упоминания основных разделов хроматографии в статьях по ГХ, ЖХ, ТСХ.
