Résumé :
During the preparation of the taxonomic treatment of Selaginellaceae from Brazil (Góes-Neto et al. in prep.) we discovered that various Neotropical – particularly Brazilian – species were poorly typified. Of the species assessed, we verified that ca. 20 species already have a lectotype designated inadvertently (see McNeil et al. 2012, Art. 7.10 and 9.23, Prado et al. 2015) by Alston (1936) and Alston et al. (1981) although, these lectotypifications seem to be unknown to most taxonomists working on Selaginella (Góes-Neto et al. in prep.). However, several Neotropical species still lack lectotypification. One of these is Selaginella decomposita Spring (1840: 123), and in accordance with the Articles 9.2, 9.11 and 9.12 of the Melbourne Code (McNeil et al. 2012), we designate a lectotype for this species below.

Résumé :
The fish specimens sent to Vienna by the Austrian naturalist Emanuel Ritter von Friedrichsthal (1809 – 1842) constitute one of the oldest collections of freshwater fishes from Central America. The holotype of Heros friedrichsthalii and specimens of Atherinella sardina were collected in the Rio San Juan or Lago de Nicaragua drainage in Nicaragua. The types of Cichlasoma urophthalmus stenozonum, Heros melanopogon and Heros triagramma, as well as specimens of Petenia splendida and Eugerres plumieri were most probably collected at Bacalar, Quintana Roo. Cichlasoma loisellei (Bussing, 1989), is synonymized with Parachromis friedrichsthalii (Heckel, 1840). The species hitherto referred to as P. friedrichsthalii takes the valid name Parachromis multifasciatus (Regan, 1905). A lectotype is designated for Cichlasoma urophthalmus stenozonum (Hubbs, 1936), which is synonymized with Mayaheros urophthalmus (Günther, 1862).

Résumé :
The first treatment of the family Chenopodiaceae for the flora of Nepal (Central and Eastern Himalaya) has been recently published (Sukhorukov & Kushunina 2014). However, after a detailed investigation of original material concerning Chenopodium pallidum Moquin-Tandon (1840: 30), which is a part of Jacquemont’s collection from India (Herbarium P), we can state that all these specimens indeed belong to Atriplex Linnaeus (1753: 1052). The morphological differences between Atriplex and Chenopodium Linnaeus (1753: 218) are clear in mature plants only, whereas the plants in the type material were gathered in vegetative or early blooming stage (with flower buds only). This explains why the specimens have remained misidentified for such a long time. The characters which support our statement are: (1) Kranz leaf anatomy, which is typical of many Atriplex species (Sukhorukov 2006) placed into the large ‘C4-clade’ (Kadereit et al. 2010), but never observed in Chenopodium, (2) unisexual flowers (only male flower buds were found, because female flowers are absent at early blooming stage) which of all Chenopodieae in its current circumscription are present only in Atriplex (Sukhorukov & Zhang 2013). The “Eastern India” (Fr.: “Indes Orientales” after Jacquemont, 1834), where the plants were collected, applies to the territories of present-day West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan (northern part), Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab (India, Pakistan), and bordering parts of Xizang (China). Only some Atriplex species with Kranz leaf anatomy occur in this region (Zhu et al. 2003, Klimeš & Dickoré 2005, Sukhorukov 2006), such as: A. centralasiatica Iljin (1936: 124), A. pamirica Iljin (1936: 124), and A. schugnanica Iljin (1936: 123). However, the plants known as A. schugnanica are the best match to the Jacquemont’s specimens due to aphyllous or bracteose (not leafy) inflorescence. According to Art. 11 of ICN (McNeill et al. 2012), the name Chenopodium pallidum appears to be an older name at specific rank for Atriplex schugnanica Iljin (1936: 123), and thus a new combination is proposed in the present paper. Besides, new Chenopodium species, previously named Chenopodium pallidum, is described from Nepal.

Résumé :
This study was undertaken to investigate the genetic relationships of allopatric populations of the cichlid fish, Tilapia sparrmanii (A. Smith 1840) inhabiting the sinkholes and springs of the North West Province, South Africa. It also examined the genetic relationships of T sparrmanii to its polychromatic sister species, Tilapia guinasana (Trewavas 1936) which is endemic to the Guinas sinkhole in Namibia. Finally, the study investigated whether there is a genetic basis for T guinasana's colour polymorphism. The research was prompted by the concern of conservation authorities about the possible loss of unique fauna given the high demand for use of the subterranean waters for agricultural, domestic and industrial purposes. Such demands have the potential to drain these habitats. Further concerns related to habitat destruction and the introduction of alien species in the ecosystems inhabited by both fish species. Three approaches were adopted in attempting to answer the above questions. First was the investigation of Sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS)-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE) of total cellular proteins as a fast and relatively inexpensive indicator of genetic relatedness between the fish populations. Secondly, genetic differentiation between the T sparrmanii populations and its relationship to T guinasana were assayed using restriction endonuclease analysis of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-amplified regions of the cytochrome b gene and the d-Ioop of mitochondrial DNA, coupled with Temperature Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (TGGE) analysis of the same regions. The third approach involved the use of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting of the populations ofT sparrmanii as an indicator of genetic differentiation between them. RAPD fingerprinting was further used to investigate the genetic relationships between T sparrmanii and T guinasana and to probe the genetic basis of the polychromatism of the latter. SDS-PAGE did not reveal any genetic differentiation between the T sparrmanii populations, nor could the analysis detect variation within them. It however clearly distinguished at a species level between T sparrmanii and T guinasana as well as between these and other fish species, thus indicating its possible utility as an indicator of genetic relatedness at a species level. Mitochondrial studies employing the Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-amplified cytochrome b (1.1 kb) and d-Ioop regions (0.9 kb) with six and five restriction enzymes respectively, failed to reveal genetic differences within and between the allopatric populations. TGGE of500 bp of the d-Ioop and 400 bp of the 12sRNA PCR-amplified fragments did not reveal any differences between the populations of T. sparrmanii, nor did the analysis reveal any differences between T. sparrmanii and T. guinasana. The lack of differentiation between the T. sparrmanii populations by these mitochondrial Dna analysis techniques, despite habitat fragmentation, indicated a recent origin of the populations from a common ancestral population. Failure to distinguish between T. sparrmanii and T. guinasana may be related to the sensitivity of the techniques utilized. RAPD fingerprinting analysis indicated that the populations are genetically differentiated from each other. Using a measure of coefficient of variation, the population with the highest variation was the Wondergat population (13.99%), followed by the Klerkskraal popUlation (8.29%), the Malmani and Marico Oog populations (each with 5.88%) and the least variation (4.95 and 4.83%) was with the Amalinda and Molopo Oog populations respectively. This high degree of intra population similarity points to the fact that this differentiation is still confined within the limits of con specificity. The genetic distances between all of the T. sparrmanii populations across all primers ranged from 0.09 to 0.234 and averaged 0.146, a value that falls in the upper end of conspecific population differentiation. Such results indicate populational sub-division below the species level. RAPD fingerprinting therefore proved more sensitive than protein or mitochondrial studies. The differentiation it detected between the populations is a reflection of their adaptation to local conditions of the unique ecosystems they inhabit. A comparison with a subset of primers between T. guinasana and T. sparrmanii confirmed the separate species status of the former from the latter. The mean genetic distance between the T. sparrmanii populations was 0.136, compared to that between T. sparrmanii and T. guinasana which was found to be 0.374. Statistical analysis of the difference between the mean genetic distances indicated significance with 95% confidence. The polychromatism of T guinasana was investigated to determine whether there were significant differences between its five colour morphs. RAPD fingerprinting indicated with 95% confidence that there were significant differences between the colour forms based on the genetic distances computed between them. These genetic differences appeared to correlate with the observed assortative mating between the colour forms of the species. The manifestation of the polychromatism at sexual maturity in T guinasana probably indicates that colouration plays an important role in the breeding process. The genetic uniqueness shown here between the populations of T sparrmanii and the colour forms of T guinasana indicate for protective measures to be put in place if the genetic resources of the isolated fish populations are to be preserved. These must be coupled with a thorough assessment of the temporal and spatial distribution of genetic variability of the populations as a guide to a long-term management strategy for the fish populations and the ecosystems they inhabit. This study therefore has shown that the allopatric populations of T sparrmanii in the sinkholes and springs of the North-West Province are genetically unique, as well as show that the colour forms of T guinasana are genetically distinct.

The present work “Self-portrait and self-representation: variations on a theme” addresses the issue of self-representation in art through the creation of a series of drawn self-portraits. The project has an investigative character, and the drawings were developed in series from the exploration of varied techniques and materials, sometimes traditional, sometimes less conventional. The creative process focused on making selfportraits using a mirror, an indispensable item that allows us to observe our face directly. The drawings created from the reflection’s observation were transformed throughout the development process of the series, enabling the discovery of new representational forms that deviate from the mimetic reproduction of the mirror image. The way the face was represented went through major changes throughout the development of the self-portraits. The use of chance in the creation of accidental stains contributed to a more freely and subjective graphic registration, avoiding the more objective figurative representation of the face. From experiences with various tools and techniques, it was possible to find new answers that increased the exploration of structural elements of the drawing’s graphic language with stains, strokes, textures or color. The project presents a theoretical research related to the theme in question, and a practical part that reports the experiments performed during the development of the work, as well as the results obtained from the artistic research. The first two parts focus on the study of the emergence of self-portrait in art history; the concept of self-representation, especially in modern and contemporary art; in the theoretical study concerning the creation of serial drawings; and in approaching the issue of variation of the same theme in artistic practice. The third and last part focuses on the practical work, ie the process of creating the self-portraits.

Résumé :
Chapter 2 focuses on the bicycle’s revolutionary role in class and gender relations. Close readings of three of Wells’s social novels allow us to appreciate the evolving symbolism and narrative function of a vehicle that seemed capable of eroding strict Victorian class and moral structures. Secondly, I examine the bicycle’s relationship to the changing status of women in society, asking whether the bicycle really was a ‘freedom machine’. By exploring texts from a range of British, Irish and French authors such as Grant Allen (1848–99), Mary E. Kennard (1850–1936), Matthias Mc Donnell Bodkin (1850–1933) and Émile Zola (1840–1902), I seek to complicate the picture of the bicycle’s role in women’s emancipation by shedding light on the machine’s ambivalent role in a society that remained decidedly patriarchal. A study of the role of bicycles in A la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time) by Marcel Proust (1871–1922) closes this chapter, where I highlight the object’s crucial role as a feminist and queer symbol in literature. The bicycle emerges from these texts as a subversive technology that allows its users to transgress and blur gender and social boundaries.
