Résumé :
Abstract Inorganic arsenics like arsenic trioxide (ATO) are novel anti-cancer drugs active in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) and multiple myeloma (MM). ATO induces apoptosis of plasma cells by several mechanisms including down-regulation of BCL-2 expression and inhibition of DNA-binding by NF-κB. The amount of ATO that can be safely given is low because of QTc-prolongation. ZIO-101, a new organic arsenic, is in phase-1/-2 trials. ZIO-101 can be safely given at much higher doses than ATO. We evaluated the in vivo anti-myeloma activity of ZIO-101 in a SCID-hu mouse model of human myeloma. LAGλ-1 was developed from a person with melphalan-resistant and LAGλ-1B from a person with bortezomib-resistant myeloma. Each severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mouse was implanted with a 2–4 mm3 fragment of LAGλ-1B or LAGλ-1 into the left superficial gluteal muscle. Fragments were allowed to grow for 14 d when human IgG was first detectable. ZIO-101 was given IV 1 or 2 times/d using three different schedules: one day/w, 3 days/w or 5 days/w at doses of 50– 200 mg/kg/d. Tumor volume and human IgG were assessed weekly. Doses up to 200 mg/kg were well-tolerated. Anti-myeloma effects were observed in both models at doses of 100 – 200 mg/kg on all 3 schedules. Mice receiving 100 mg/kg twice daily thrice weekly and those receiving 200 mg/kg once weekly showed marked anti-myeloma activity (100 mg/kg, P = 0.03; 200 mg/kg, P = 0.001) and reduced human IgG levels (100 mg/kg, P < 0.001; 200 mg/kg, P = 0.01) compared to controls. We are evaluating ZIO-101 in other SCID-hu models of human myeloma and exploring different doses and schedules of ZIO-101 alone or combined with other anti-myeloma agents. In summary, these data show activity of ZIO-101 in human myeloma in vivo. These studies provide the bases for future clinical trials.

Résumé :
This study of Beekeeping, considered to be a 'no investment-profit-giving' venture, is an age-old tradition in India. The diversity of Bee- flora and varied agro-climate conditions in Uttar Pradesh offers enormous potential for the development and growth of apiculture. The district has six development blocks out of which two bocks, namely Baraut and Baghpat blocks were selected randomly for the study. Keeping low number of Honey bee producers in the study area, all 10 Honey bee producers. On the basis of Honey box unit, these bee producers were categories in two categories, i.e. 1-100 box and 101-200 box. The primary data were collected by survey method with respondents through scheduled personal interviews. The income from honey / box / annum came to Rs. 8077.36 in 1-100 box category while Rs. 8514.36 in 101-200 box category and the average income / box / annum came to Rs. 8295.83. The table also shows the category wise input-output ratio. The average of Input-Output Ratio came out to 1:3.65, while category wise, it came to 1:3.45 for 1-100 box category and 1:3.85 for 101-200 box category. The Operational cost of honey production/kg came to Rs. 57.87 for 1-100 box category while Rs. 50.91 for 101- 200 box category. The average operational cost came to Rs. 54.39. The operational cost of 1-100 box category and 101-200 box category came to Rs. 162.13 and Rs. 169.09 respectively. The average return over operational cost came to Rs. 165.61. This study is that Honey Production is a good combination for mixed farming because it requires less area of land, small capital, and high return. So those farmers who have less area of land should adopt honey production as a subsidiary occupation.

Résumé :
Background: Cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) screening in individuals with advanced HIV reduces cryptococcal meningitis (CM) cases and deaths. The World Health Organization recently recommended increasing screening thresholds from CD4 ≤100 cells/µL to ≤200 cells/µL. CrAg screening at CD4 ≤100 cells/µL is cost-effective; however, the cost-effectiveness of screening patients with CD4 101–200 cells/µL requires evaluation. Methods: Using a decision analytic model with Botswana-specific cost and clinical estimates, we evaluated CrAg screening and treatment among individuals with CD4 counts of 101–200 cells/µL. We estimated the number of CM cases and deaths nationally and treatment costs without screening. For screening we modeled the number of CrAg tests performed, number of CrAg-positive patients identified, proportion started on pre-emptive fluconazole, CM cases and deaths. Screening and treatment costs were estimated and cost per death averted or disability-adjusted life year (DALY) saved compared with no screening. Results: Without screening, we estimated 142 CM cases and 85 deaths annually among individuals with CD4 101–200 cells/µL, with treatment costs of $368,982. With CrAg screening, an estimated 33,036 CrAg tests are performed, and 48 deaths avoided (1,017 DALYs saved). While CrAg screening costs an additional $155,601, overall treatment costs fall by $39,600 (preemptive and hospital-based CM treatment), yielding a net increase of $116,001. Compared to no screening, high coverage of CrAg screening and pre-emptive treatment for CrAg-positive individuals in this population avoids one death for $2440 and $114 per DALY saved. In sensitivity analyses assuming a higher proportion of antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve patients (75% versus 15%), cost per death averted was $1472; $69 per DALY saved. Conclusions: CrAg screening for individuals with CD4 101–200 cells/µL was estimated to have a modest impact, involve additional costs, and be less cost-effective than screening populations with CD4 counts ≤100 cells/µL. Additional CrAg screening costs must be considered against other health system priorities.

Résumé :
Alectorioid lichens are the dominant group of epiphytic lichens in boreal forests. Epiphytic lichen richness and abundance generally increase with stand age and within-stand heterogeneity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of time elapsed since the last fire, stand structure, tree size, tree age, and branch height for epiphytic lichen biomass of the boreal forest of western Quebec. We sampled 12 sites belonging to four forest age classes (from 50 to >200 years). We assessed epiphytic lichen biomass of three species groups ( Bryoria , Evernia , and Usnea ) on 12 trees in each site. Our results showed that biomass of Bryoria and Usnea was higher in intermediate stages (between 101 and 200 years) compared with younger (50–100 years) and older (>200 years) stages. Biomass of the three species groups was greater on larger diameter trees (>16 cm) compared with smaller ones (<16 cm). These results indicate that the protection of postfire stands aged between 101 and 200 year should be prioritized to maintain the functional role of epiphytic lichens in managed landscapes.

Résumé :
As one of the most important prototypical chromium-based MOFs, MIL-101(Cr) is well-studied and widely employed in various scientific fields. However, due to its small capture window sizes and curved internal apertures, its application in large molecular removal is quite limited, and given its high stability and high synthetic temperature (>200 °C), it is difficult to achieve hierarchically porous MIL-101(Cr). In our study, hierarchically porous MIL-101(Cr) involving a high macro-/meso-/micropores ratio was designed and synthesized using acetic acid as an additive and silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles as a template. The optimal hierarchically porous MIL-101(Cr) (A-4) possessed a high specific surface area (2693 m2 g−1) and an abundant macro-/mesoporous structure with the addition of SiO2 of 200 mg. Compared with the control sample (A-0) with a less macro-/mesoporous structure, A-4 showed good adsorption properties for both coomassie brilliant blue R-250 (CBB, 82.1 mg g−1) and methylene blue (MB, 34.3 mg g−1) dyes, which were 1.36 times and 9.37 times higher than those of A-0. Moreover, A-4 also had good recyclability, and the removal rate of CBB was still higher than 85% after five cycles of adsorption.

Résumé :
Abstract Deciding which individuals qualify as “poor” often depends on how each country or municipality defines the term ‘poverty’. In the United States, program eligibility is often tied to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), using 100% of the FPL as a cut-off for receipt of services. However, research has shown that incomes of 200% of the FPL and higher are often needed to establish even minimum levels of economic security. Using data from an omnibus health study conducted in 2018 that included 1,581 persons ages 60+ who were asked about their health and service needs, we compared persons making 100% of the FPL or less to persons making 101%-199% and 200%+, respectively. Results show that poor health status and need for services among persons in the 101%-199% are similar to those with incomes less than 100% FPL, and significantly higher than persons with incomes at 200%+ of the FPL.

We study the X-W emission (40 Å-200 Å) of plasmas produced by a high intensity subpicosecond laser. The experiments were performed using the INRS Table Top Terawatt 500 fs laser at both wavelengths of 1.05 μm and 0.5 μm and at intensities up to 5 × 1017 W/cm2. The spectra were recorded with two flat field UV spectrometers. We use both 101-07 Kodak and Shanghai 5 FW films. A comparison between the two films will be presented. The influence of various laser parameters on the ionization dynamics has been studied. In particular the laser pulse width was changed by controlling the compression gratings. Spectra obtained with pulse durations of 0. 5 ps, 1.3 ps, 5 ps and 1 ns will be presented and discussed.

Résumé :
Abstract This study aimed to develop simple electrochemical electrodes for the fast detection of chlorine, sodium, and potassium ions in human serum. A flat thin-film gold electrode was used as the detection electrode for chloride ions; a solid-state ion-selective electrode (ISE), which was formed by covering a flat thin-film gold electrode with a mixture of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and ion-selective membrane (ISM), was developed for sodium and potassium ions detection. Through cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square-wave voltammetry (SWV), the detection data can be obtained within two minutes. The linear detection ranges in the standard samples of chlorine, sodium, and potassium ions were 25–200 mM, 50–200 mM, and 2–10 mM, with the average relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.79%, 1.65%, and 0.47% and the average recovery rates of 101%, 100%, and 96% respectively. Interference experiments using normal concentrations of Na+, K+, Cl−, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in human blood demonstrated that the proposed detection electrodes have good selectivity. Moreover, the proposed detection electrodes have characteristics such as the ability to be prepared under relatively simple process conditions, excellent detection sensitivity, and low RSD, and the detection linear range is suitable for the Cl−, Na+, and K+ concentrations in human serum.

Résumé :
Development testing of hybrid bearings with M.50 rings and HIP’ed silicon nitride balls in small high speed turbojet engines was carried out for several minutes at speeds up to 110,000 rpm. The main rotor system comprised an overhung radial compressor and turbine monorotor assembly with a pair of preloaded 101–size bearings. Estimated aerodynamic thrust of up to 750 N (170 lb) was added to the 200 N (45 lb) preload on the bearing adjacent to the compressor. Some testing was carried out with MIL–L–7808 air/oil mist and some with JP–10 fuel supplied in a similar fashion. After each test phase the bearings were removed for examination and re–used or replaced. Four of the bearings were submitted to inspection with special equipment to measure operating contact angles, as evidenced by the visible ball tracks, and any wear present. Contact angles and other operating characteristics estimated with the Jones, “SHABERTH,” and “ADORE” computer codes were compared with the experimental data.

Résumé :
Abstract Slurries and sludges across the United States Department of Energy (DOE) complex rank among the most rheologically interesting. Their composition is heterogeneous, spanning a very broad range of particle sizes, densities, and interparticle forces. All exhibit shear thinning, some have yield stresses, and many are thixotropic. Despite the variety, these complex fluids are often represented using the historic Bingham fluid model, which fits higher shear rate data to a simple straight line. The intercept provides a yield stress, which has been a key design parameter in construction of large-scale waste processing facilities. However, many radioactive wastes are simply not Bingham fluids, and this representation extrapolates poorly across low to intermediate shear rates that are characteristic of typical processing conditions. Indeed, processing shear rates as high as 200 1/s, which has been a typical minimum shear rate used in fitting the Bingham fluid model, are seldom encountered in nuclear waste processing. Therefore, more realistic rheological models are necessary to accurately predict waste processing performance. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) recently re-evaluated the rheology of reconstituted Hanford REDOX (reduction-oxidation) process sludge waste against a wide variety of rheological models including the Bingham, Cross, Cross with yield stress, Carreau, biviscous, Herschel-Bulkley (which includes a power law dependence), Casson, and Gay models. They found that all of the models provided a closer fit than the Bingham model and that the biviscous model and Cross with yield stress model were convincing. However, reconstituted Hanford REDOX sludge waste is but one type of DOE waste and a direct contrast, and comparison of these three models against undiluted, unmixed tank waste (actual not simulant) has not been performed previously. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the rheology of actual tank waste with these more accurate rheological models. In this paper, we evaluate select rheological data for slurry samples from Hanford’s AZ-101, AZ-102, and SY-101 waste tanks. In each of these cases, we find that Cross’ model with yield stress and the biviscous model significantly outperform the Bingham fluid model. Furthermore, the AZ-101 data also shows that the shear stress peak at startup significantly exceeds the Bingham yield stress, which is commonly observed in the initial moments of rheological measurements on simulants. Remarkably, Cross’ model may empirically accommodate an initial spike in shear stress at modest shear rates. These are important observations because computational and analytical fluid dynamics simulations rely on rheological constitutive models for accurately and conservatively predicting waste processing performance. These findings suggest the need for better rheological modeling of and validation against radioactive waste.

Résumé :
This study aimed to investigate the extent to which native-speakerism appears as a challenging discriminatory practice favoring native speakers (NSs) as better language teachers in the EFL job market. To do this, content analysis was utilized to analyze and critically review a corpus of 200 online teaching posts taken from an online TEFL website which presents the employers’ needs for recruiting English language teachers in different EFL contexts. From the analysis, the study also sought to examine the criteria which were used in the posts to recruit only NS teachers as well as the relationship between the posts favoring NSs and the origin of the educational agencies needing the language teachers. The findings revealed that discrimination was highly practiced in the ads as they unprofessionally preferred NSs as EFL teachers depending on linguistic, political and ideological grounds rather than on social, cultural, professional and pedagogic appropriateness. The concept of native-speakerism was strongly present in the ads as 76% (153 ads) showed a preference of NS teachers. The analysis also indicated a significant relationship between NS preference and the origin of recruiting agencies and institutions as most ads (101 out of 153 ads with NS preference) were posted by agencies and institutes that were branches of larger educational organizations originated in native-speaking countries. According to these findings, several recommendations were put in hand concerning TESOL professionalism and teaching competency.

Résumé :
Commercial concentrates (CC) of vitamin K dependent coagulation factors may cause thrombosis or coagulation factor consumption while more highly purified (17 U/mg) factor IX (IX) concentrates do not seem to be thrombogenic (Menache et al, Blood 64:1220, 1984). Monoclonal antibody (MAb) immunoaffinity purified IX of high specific activity from CC or recombinant factor IX sources may also improve therapy. In this report, 400 mg of Affigel-10 linked A-7 MAb was used to bind factor IX in the presence of metal ions (20 mM MgCl2). Elution of IX was with 20 mM EDTA. Thrombogenicity of CC and IX prepared from CC by MAb immunoaffinity was tested. A CC which was thrombogenic in the stasis thrombosis assay (CC #1) produced large thrombi at doses of 50, 50, and 100 U/kg while none were seen with the IX produced from this CC at doses of 106 and 234 U/kg. A heparin treated CC (CC #2) which was not thrombogenic in the stasis-thrombosis assay at doses of 100 U/kg was infused in 4 rabbits at 100 U/kg and platelets, fibrinogen, AT-III antigen, and factors IX, V, and VIII were monitored for 5 hours post-infusion. Immunoaffinity IX from this CC was infused in 4 rabbits at 214-243 U/kg for comparison. Mean platelet count decrease was 20% in CC group and 8% for the IX group. Mean factor V and VIII decreased 26 and 36% respectively with CC while no decrease was seen in the IX rabbits (p < .05). Fibrinogen values and AT-III did not differ for IX or CC groups. Mean factor IX activity at 1 hour increased 1.6 fold for CC and 3 fold for IX. Yields for IX purification were 80 and 85%. Clotting activity was 143 and 101 U/mg and antigen was approximately 200 U/mg. Purification was over 90 fold by MAb immunoaf f inity. There was no detectable factor II, VII or X activity in MAb purified IX. Non-activated PTT was greater than 200 seconds for CC #1 and 158 seconds for CC #2. Column capacity was at least 150 mg. These results demonstrate that factor IX is not the thrombogenic component of some CC. Also, IX prepared by MAb immunoaffinity may have therapeutic advantage for patients at risk for thrombosis and adverse effects of contaminating proteins in commercial concentrates.

Résumé :
Pool boiling heat transfer experiments were performed for water at 101 kPa to examine elementary process of nucleate pool boiling. The heat transfer surface was made from a copper printed circuit board. The size of the heat transfer surface was 10 mm × 10 mm. Direct current was supplied to the heat transfer surface to heat it up. The Bakelite plate of the backside of the copper layer was taken off at the center portion of the heat transfer surface. The test vessel was a closed 200-mm cube container made of duralumin. It has transparent view windows on opposing side walls made of a Polycarbonate plate to observe a boiling state. Heat transfer surface was placed at the bottom of the test vessel. Distilled water was used for the experiments. The instantaneous variation of the backside temperature of the heat transfer surface was measured with an infrared radiation camera. Bubble behavior was recorded with a high speed video camera. The time and the space resolution of the infrared radiation cameras used in present experiments were 60 Hz and 0.1 mm × 0.1 mm, and 120 Hz and 0.315 mm × 0.315 mm, respectively. When the heat flux was increased, the instantaneous surface temperature variation explain the pattern. In the isolated bubble region, surface temperature was uniform during waiting time. When boiling bubble generation started, a large dip in the surface temperature was formed under the bubble. After the bubble left from the heat transfer surface, the surface temperature returned to former uniform temperature distribution. Surface temperature was not affected by the bubble generation beyond 1.8 mm from the center of the bubble. In the intermediate and high heat flux region, the variation of surface temperature and heat flux were small. Rather the heat flux variation range was close to that at the isolated boiling region.
